Feng Shui of Microsoft's Dragon Mouse

Dragon is the most beloved animal of the Chinese people. It represents prosperity, blessing and success in the Chinese lore. This belief gives marketers a tremendous opportunity to make some quick bucks with the upcoming of the Year of Dragon.

Rolls Royce of UK, manufacturer of deluxe vehicles, has marketed a "limited edition" of a dragon car by hand painting a few golden dragons in the interior of a Phantom model vehicle. People have snapped up this dragon inventory within a week when the car was put in the market. This dragon car has a little price tag of about US$1.2 million a pop.

Alas, not every Chinese is a rich panda to afford this Rolls Royce Dragon. But they want to get some benefits from the year of dragon too. So they resort to "making" dragon babies. Many Chinese hospitals are already fully booked for dragon baby deliveries up to Sept. 2012 now. This baby boom will increase competitions for school, jobs, spouse among dragon babies themselves than other birth cohorts for the rest of their lives.

Well, not every Chinese is fortunate enough to have someone to "make" dragon baby with or afford a babysitter. How can they cash in this dragon mania?

By the grace of God Microsoft has created two affordable "limited editions" dragon mice. The black "Arch Touch Mouse" only costs you US$69.95 and the wireless "mobile mouse" US$34.95.

The question is: Do the designers of these mouse models understand Feng Shui and Chinese folklore?

2012 is Ren-chen or year of water-dragon. In Chinese metaphysics, black or blue stands for water. Therefore the base color of these mice is correct to use black.

However, the gold or metal colored dragon version is a little bit off, though still usable. Year 2000 or Geng-chen was the year of metal dragon. Metal nurtures water in Chinese 5-element theory, so a gold colored dragon is still acceptable or auspicious for the year of water dragon. For the same reason the gray-colored dragon on the Arch Touch Mouse is considered metal and so it is also acceptable.

The model with red dragon imprinted can be put in storage till 2036 when the year of fire-dragon (Bing-chen) comes. Fire-dragon clashes water dragon-- inauspicious for the user of this mouse during 2012. Microsoft can market the red dragon mouse as an antique mouse in 2036 if it is still in business.

Now comes to the most important question-- are these dragon mice good Feng Shui or not? You need to learn something about the concept of Grand Duke or the Annual Ruler of the year.

2012 is the year of the dragon. This means dragon is the Grand Duke or Ruler of the Year. Dragon is your boss for the year. Chinese Feng Shui dictates that you should not face Grand Duke directly, let alone holding his head and moving his tail backwards when you use the dragon mouse. This is disrespect to the max to Grand Duke. Antagonizing Grand Duke is a one way ticket to make your life miserable.

"Ken, since I can't afford the Rolls Dragon or make a dragon baby, I have already bought a dragon mouse. What should I do with it?"

Well, you may get rid of it on Ebay or put it at the back of where you sit most of the time. Grand Duke enhances your competition power in business or examinations if he is at your back. It is auspicious to have Grand Duke as your back support. You may use your dragon mouse safely after Feb.3, 2013.

Now Microsoft can market these dragon mice as Feng Shui remedies and double the prices. Bill, do it quick before the Queen of Feng Shui picks up this business idea.

Annual Predictions DIY

Have you ever wondered how those masters or non-masters make their annual predictions? Today is your lucky day-- you will find out you can do it too--- no Chinese metaphysics courses needed to take from me or other masters. Of course, it helps if you have knowledge of Chinese metaphysics.

Most of the annual predictions focus on these areas:
Disasters-- natural or man-made disasters like tsunami, earthquake, flooding, drought, snowstorm, tornado, tropical storms, epidemics, nuclear accidents, war, train accidents, terrorist attacks, air disasters, cruise ship sinking ....(hints: earthquake is likely in the "rings of fire" region; war in the middle east... throw a dart to a world map if you can't make up your mind)
Economy-- stock market, housing market, FOREX, oil market.... (hints: either up or down or "up a little bit or down a little bit"; pretty easy to predict!)
Politics-- who gets or loses power (hint: don't make 50/50 chance prediction like the USA presidential election. A bad guess will make you look like an idiot and correct one will not win you anything)
People-- mostly celebrities or politicians; who cheats, marries, divorces, scandals...etc.

COMMON TOOLS FOR MAKING PREDICTIONS
Gut-feeling : Simply make any guesses or "educated guesses" based on past year statistics. Isn't this easy?
Psychic reading: People who are psychic or think they are psychic make predictions based on their "psychic feeling". You may even use what you have dreamed.
Divinations: For people who are not psychic, they may use Yi-Jing, Xuan-Kong-Da-Gua, Plum-Flower and similar divination methods to make predictions down to individual month or even days.
Bazi of the New year: This method requires knowledge of Bazi (4-Pillars). You find out the exact date and hour when the New Year kicks in and generate a 4-pillars chart. This treats the new year as if it is a person and make predictions or telling stories based on the combinations and clashes in the chart.
Animal sign of the New Year: This method creates a story based on the animal sign of the new year. For example, 2012 is ren-chen or water-dragon year. The story-telling part will be concentrated on the personality and characteristics of dragon and its water nature. So you may hear about flooding stories.

Annual chart based on 9-stars: this method is used mostly in Feng Shui predictions. For example, 5-yellow disaster star flies to southeast for 2012, so major disasters are likely to happen in the southeast, especially when monthly 5-star flies there.
Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Year Chart: Predictions can also be made based on QMDJ, but it is not common to see. It is pretty good at predicting Feng Shui problems.
Scavenger method: If you can't think or don't want to think, you can "improvise" on other's predictions. This method summarizes or pick-and-choose the predictions made by other people. The disadvantage of this method is that you lose the bragging right of being the first to make the prediction. The advantage is that you can make the most comprehensive predictions.

It is rare that "masters" utilize only one method to make predictions. They use combinations of the above methods to "enrich" or throw out more predictions. When one throws out 100+ predictions, a few of them will "hit". "Masters" can brag about how accurate their predictions were the following year (never mind or mention the ones they have missed).

Compare with economic predictions, astrologers are doing pretty well. The late economist John Kenneth Galbraith wrote:

"The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable."

"Ken, I have not seen you make any annual predictions."

I do not want to make economists feel good. Besides, predicting disasters will generate mass negative manifestations. It is bad karma for everyone.

Minimal Feng Shui Guide for 2012 year of Water Dragon

Ren-chen or year of Water Dragon will start in a few weeks. You may want to fix the regions that will become "dangerous" to fix or dig after Feb.3, 2012 now.

The annual chart for the Year of Dragon is:

Annual chart is based on Purple White Method which holds that 1,6, 8 and 9-star locations are auspicious. 2-black sickness and 5-yellow disaster star locations are inauspicious. Therefore, for current year, Southeast sector with 5-yellow disaster star is the most inauspicious, especially Tai Sui or Grand Duke also sits in that region. You definitely do not want lots of movement and especially "moving earth" (digging or construction) there. If the Flying Star chart of your house has 2-sickness star in the SE, you need to put metal or coin-solution cure there, especially if you have a door there. Same scenario and remedies and precautions if you have a 5-disaster star in the north sector of your house.

"Minimal Feng Shui" is to fix only 2-5, 5-5, and 9-5 star combinations in regions with activities. You don't need to put up remedies or Feng Shui monsters in all 9-palaces of your house, especially in region of no activity like storage room and guest room.

OTHER PRECAUTIONS:
Grand Duke is at Chen mountain (SE, 112.5- 127.5 degree) -- minimize movements and avoid construction or digging. 5-yellow disaster star is also in this sector for current year. If your house is facing Chen mountain (112.5- 127.5 degree), your house is said to be "Chong" or clashing Grand Duke. You may want to put a Grand Duke Talisman there for protection (see my previous message on how to get one).

Sui Po or year-breaker is at Xu mountain (292.5- 307.5 degree)-- avoid construction or digging.

San Sha or 3-killings are at Si, Wu and Wei mountains (South, 142.5- 217.5 degrees)-- avoid construction or digging.

5-yellow disaster star at Xun palace (SE)- avoid construction or digging and movements. Grand Duke sits in Xun palace with 5-yellow-- definitely be very careful when you do constructions and movement here (and avoid going SE)!

5-tiger sha at Shen, Geng and You mountains (West, 232.5- 277.5 degrees)-- avoid construction or digging and movements.

Yang nobleman sign for this year is Mao (rabbit). Yin nobleman is Si (snake).

You need to do a good date-selection if you need to do construction in any of the above locations (mountains/ palace) or better doing it before end of the current year (rabbit year).

People with dragon and dog zodiac sign should avoid seeing putting corpse in coffin or burial for this year.

2012 Grand Duke Talismans Charity Drive

This post is based on last year's Grand Duke Talisman charity drive post with some additions and new twists.

If you have just read my previous message about functions of Grand Duke, you know that there are two Grand Dukes watching over your shoulder and counting the good and bad deeds that you have done and execute rewards and misfortunes accordingly. This is a major rationale that donation to get your Grand Duke talisman. When your talisman is grounded with a charity deed, GD is less likely to execute any misfortunes due from your karma account.

2012 GRAND DUKE GENERAL PENG TAI
2012 is Ren-Chen or year of water-dragon. Grand Duke for the year is General Peng Tai who was born in 13th century during the Ming Dynasty. Peng was intelligent and smart since childhood. In 1394, he had passed the Imperial Examination and become a high level official. Yet he still lived an average and frugal life like ordinary citizens and was keen at improving government services for the public.

Before passing the Imperial Examination, Peng was engaged to a poor village girl. After becoming a government official, Peng's family thought that his fiancee's social status was not compatible with his newfound status. They also thought she was physically unattractive to be the wife of an official and wanted to cancel the engagement.

When General Peng heard his family's intention, he had strongly opposed the idea and married the original poor girl anyway. The couple lived a happy and loving life together. Therefore, people who have problem getting married due to physical characteristics and/or financial situations may get the sympathetic ears and help of General Peng this year.

2012 "EXTRA-STRENGTH" GRAND DUKE TALISMAN

Grand Duke, Feng Shui and Date-Selections

Grand Duke or Tai Sui was probably started as an astronomical concept and evolved into an important metaphysical construct. For example, in Feng Shui, Grand Duke (GD) represents a direction and space associated with a time frame. GD is also an important time concept in date-selection. For example, in a Mao year (rabbit, like 2011), you do not want to choose a You (rooster) day for any important activity because the day clashes Grand Duke.

Tai Sui originally refers to the imaginary or invisible star that orbits around the zodiac in opposite direction of the Jupiter or from west to east along the zodiac. Sui Xing or yearly star is the visible Jupiter which revolves around the sun once in about 12 years. The Zodiac is divided into 12 segments and each segment is named after an earthly branch (Chinese Zodiac animal). Orbit of Tai Sui is assigned with 10 heavenly stems for each year. Combining the two we have the 60 Tai Sui or Grand Dukes, which fits the 60-years cycle of Chinese calendar system.

PERSONIFICATION OF 60 GRAND DUKES
The idea of Grand Duke was based on the strong energy field created by Jupiter that is balanced by the imaginary Sui Xing (yin-yang balance principle). It was not easy to be understood by average people, especially when literacy was not widespread during ancient time. By assigning a name and face to each of the 60 binomials (GD), people can conceptualize and GD easier than as an energy or qi.

According to Daoism, 60 GDs are the immortals from the North Big Dipper constellation, ruled by Dou-mou , the mother of 60 GDs. These immortals were born in different historical periods to show and teach people the Dao and righteousness. The personalities associated with 60 GDs were drawn from actual historical figures who were characterized by high moral principles, civic spirit, patriotism and compassion. They were mostly pious government officials or loyal and patriotic military generals. All the 60 GD personalities were taken from pre-1644 time period (before Qing Dynasty). So we can deduce the personalization of GD came after 1644. This is relatively "new" in terms of the 5000 years of Chinese history.

FUNCTIONS OF GRAND DUKE
According to Daoism, 60 GDs, are the emanations of Dao ("The Way"). On human level, GD handles the "fortunes and misfortunes, including health and sickness" of people according to their pre-determined destiny and personal choices/behaviors after birth. GD does not "punish" but simply executes what are scheduled and arrange rewards/disasters based on people's merits..

However, Daoism also stresses "my destiny is determined by myself and not heaven and earth". It holds that if we do charity work and practice kindness, GD will protect us from misfortune.

According to Daoism, every individual is under the constant observations of two GDs. One is his/her "Personal GD" or the one's birth year GD. For example, I was born in 1955. GD of 1955 is General Yang Sen. Yang is my personal GD who is in charge of my life and death events. He is the Chinese version of your personal guardian angel (note: there is a daoist method of harnessing the power of one's Personal GD for success and avoidance of misfortunes). The second GD is the "Annual GD" which changes every year. Annual GD is the "ruler of the year" who is in charge of your annual luck and events.

GRAND DUKE WORSHIP
The idea of Personal and Annual GDs to keep track of your good and bad deeds and administer rewards and disincentives accordingly may be scary enough to make some people kow-tow or worship GD. But some people may treat it as another bogeyman story. How can Daoism draw a direct relationship of GD to every person on earth?

With Chinese metaphysics, it is easy to accomplish because almost every Chinese metaphysics subject is associated with heavenly stems and earthly branches. 60 Grand Dukes is based on the 60 Jia-zi calendar system. This means it is in terms of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. People in China are born with an Zodiac animal sign. The basic interaction rules of branches like 6-clashes, penalty, and combinations are turned into personal relationship between individual and GD.

Basically, if one's animal sign has any interaction with Annual GD's animal sign, is generically called "violate GD" (fan tai sui) with clashing GD being the most serious violation that could bring major misfortune, sickness and even death.

At least once every three years one will "violate" GD in some ways and once every 6 years a major clash with GD. This really brings a major reason to appease GD. GD worship is an important income source for most Daoist Temples. Even some Buddhist temples put up Grand Duke Halls to draw in worshipers.

Stems and branches, the "a-b-c" of Chinese Metaphysics, are multidimensional concepts. They can represent directions, time, seasons, shapes and the likes. In other words, they can jump or change to different dimensions, be it time, space, seasons and etc.. So for Feng Shui, GD becomes a directional space with strong energy that should not be disturbed or misfortunes will happen. For example, in Dragon year (2012), GD will be in the Chen mountain (SE1). One should not have construction or excessive movement there.

For date-selection systems, the logic is similar to Feng Shui except in this case, GD is in terms of time dimensions-- year, month, day and hour. For example, in Chen year (2012), you don't want to chose a time (month, day, hour) that has the Xu (dog) sign.

The GD concept and its applications are pervasive in Chinese metaphysics. It is used in Feng Shui, date-selections, Bazi and more. The origin of it may be just from the 12 branches/ animals!

Church Bells, Temple Bells and House-cleansing

I have watched a BBC documentary "Come Bell Ringing" last night. Conductor and musician Charles Hazlewood had created a concert with the bell towers of 3 churches and a group of bell ringers in Cambridge, England. There are some historical footnotes about medieval Europeans had used bells to expel evil and sickness.

In China or most Buddhist countries, one can find a giant temple bell in a temple. The biggest temple bell in China is located in Tianning Temple in Changzhou City. It weighs 15 tons and sits on the 13th floor of a pagoda. When this bell is rung, its tone can be heard within a 10 miles radius.

Chinese Buddhists and Daoists believe that the metal sound of copper or brass bell can cleanse and purify the qi or energy of nearby environment, especially when the bell is inscribed with holy texts and blessings. These texts and blessings will be converted to sound energy and spread into the area nearby to cleanse and harmonize the energy field there.

It seems that both eastern and western cultures believe in that metal sound has certain mythical cleansing power.

In Chinese Feng Shui, metal sound is believe to cure the 2-black sickness and 5-yellow disaster stars. The rationale is that both 2 and 5 stars are earth in nature and metal sound is akin to their children crying for help (note: this is based on 5-elements theory-- earth produces metal). These negative earth energies, which would have caused sickness or misfortune, will be re-directed to nurture metal. QUICK & EASY WAY TO CLEANSE YOUR HOUSE
You may want to do a cleansing of your house if:

"The Over-metaphysicalized Person"

A "metaphysicalized person" is someone who uses metaphysics methods like Feng Shui, Bazi, ZWDS, Qi-Men-Dun-Jia, date-selections, astrology, tarot cards, runes and the likes in some aspects of his or her daily life.

An "over-metaphysicalized person" is someone who will fine-tune every activity with metaphysics methods OR obsessed with maximizing the advantages from applying metaphysics methods to a major activity-- most likely in business or wealth enhancement aspects for both genders and relationship or romance for females. These people think that metaphysics is their ticket to solve all their worldly problems.

Because I teach Chinese metaphysics, some people thought that I have a magic wand or direct hot line to heaven. They have requested me to help them move the slow-selling houses in an estate, selling a 50 feet yacht, houses or even pushing up the margin call of stocks.

An average "metaphysicalized person" simply tries to enhance some aspects of his/her life with metaphysics whereas an over-metaphysicalized person try to get an upper-hand in every facet of life or in competitions for wealth.

I have clients who keep begging for new metaphysics techniques to enhance their wealth acquisitions. I have told them that how much wealth one will acquire and enjoy is pre-determined. By pushing for wealth, they are doing "early withdrawal" from their life-time pre-determined wealth account. They will die prematurely when their life-time account is drawn empty.

You may not believe in this Buddhist view of wealth pre-determinaton. In Bazi or 4-Pillars, there is a term called "weak day-master cannot handle wealth". Bazi classifies people in strong, balanced or weak "day-master". People who belong to the "weak day-master" group cannot handle or enjoy big wealth when they are still "weak". There are numerous stories about lottery winners' life got worse or even got killed after hitting the jackpot. A recent example is the relative short life of Apple's Steve Jobs. His health got worse as he made more wealth after 2000.

There are three major types of over-metaphysicalized persons:
1. The successful business people: These are the luckiest group who enjoy successes in their business with application of metaphysics. But their appetite for metaphysics tricks keeps growing and become "metaphysics junkie" and are hard to satisfy.

2. Business people who WAS successful and is low on luck now: These people either fail to change with time and/or adapt to new business environment. Their major problem is not metaphysics but personal problems. They hope the metaphysics magic wand will turn their business around overnight. I know a businessman who has built two "5-ghost carry wealth" and a few "water-dragons" in his house. But his business still "sucks" because the problem is people-problem. The better one will use metaphysics to boost their confidence while the worse one will use metaphysics to justify their failure because of "bad luck" or "bad Feng Shui".

3. Non-business people who WAS successful and is low on luck now: Like the business counterparts, these people sometimes dwell on their past successes and fail to change or adapt to new realities. They will max out their credit cards to buy new metaphysics course and hope to turn their luck around. The new courses will dig a deeper financial hole for them. They also tend to justify their lack or action or failures on "bad luck " or "bad Feng Shui".

"Ken, do you mean metaphysics does not work?"

Of course, not every metaphysics method works. But some methods like Feng Shui, Bazi, date-selection methods are likely to enhance your goal-directed activities. However, my personal bias is: use metaphysics methods to avoid or keep bad things from happening to you. Methods for wealth enhancements should be used sparingly or "unless you have to".

Metaphysics methods, especially the wealth enhancement ones, behave like anti-biotic, the more you use it, the less effective it becomes to your personal qi. I use metaphysics methods to the max only for important occasions. For everyday life, I just use my own natural qi or energy to handle the events.

Bazi of "no good deed goes unpunished"

From Yahoo news-- an 80 years old Illinois man who distrusts banks, "had kept his life savings of $13,000 sewn inside the lining of one of his suits." He "accidentally gave away his entire life savings when making a clothing donation to his local Goodwill. He is currently appealing for the money's return so that he can care for his wife, who has Stage 4 cancer."

Is this another case of "no good deed goes unpunished"?

There are past news about some good Samaritans had helped victims of accidents and ended up being sued for causing injuries to the victims. There are similar scenarios that sometimes we do our friends or family members some favors and get blames instead of gratitude. Sometimes it may be due to our over-zealousness to help or please. But some people somehow always get reprimanded no matter how hard they try to please or being considerate.

People who get "no gratitude" (like Rodney Dangerfield's "no respect") from others even though they have done nice things to them, have a certain feature in their Bazi or 4-pillars charts. They are likely to have "Zi-Mao Penalty" or their annual luck and/or 10-year luck form a "Zi-Mao Penalty".

Zi-Mao Penalty is also called "Penalty of ingratitude" because "Zi" is water and "Mao" is wood in Bazi. Water feeds or nurtures wood. So wood should show gratitude towards water. But if wood refuses to be nurtured or over-nurtured, it becomes "ungrateful".

People with Zi-Mao Penalty in their 4P charts are likely to suffer "no good deed goes unpunished". They are also likely to be back-stabbed by the very people they have helped. So they feel unhappy and think the world is unfair.

How do people with Zi-Mao Penalty maintain their sanity? My advice is: "no ask, no help". Don't volunteer to help without being asked to. Stay away from helping people during Zi (rat) and Mao (rabbit) years except in life and death situations or making donations to charity organizations. Otherwise, they are likely to get ingratitude and back-stabbing and suffer mental anguish.

"A pain in the rear" Feng Shui

In English, we have expressions like "a pain in the rear" or "a thorn in one's eye" to represent something or people that make someone extremely uncomfortable but yet cannot remove it openly or easily. The equivalent expression in Chinese is "the nail in one's eye" (眼中钉, yǎnzhōngdīng).

The massive land development and building boom in China has created a new category of residence called "nail households" (釘子戶 dīng zi hù) or holdouts from land developers' buyout offers. Most of these "nail households" dislike the low offers or resist the corruption due to official and land developer alliance.

The pictures below show what Chinese netizens termed "Coolest nail household in history" (史上最牛钉子户) in 2007. Even CNN had reported this incident in international TV news.

"Nail household" is not a monopoly in China. The following is the famous "nail household" of a Japanese-American family living in Anaheim, California, USA, next door to the "happiest place on earth"-- Disneyland. The family refuses to sell out to Disney for decades.

Below is a group of "nail households" in the middle of a major traffic throughway and surrounded by tall buildings.

Wait! How about dead people? Yes, China also has "Nail Tomb" (坟墓钉子户). Descendants of the tomb refuses to relocate the tomb for land developer. Here is an example:

"Nail Tomb" surrounded by tall residential buildings. All the "dragon veins" are cut.

"A PAIN IN THE REAR" FENG SHUI
The "nail households", if they preserve and keep staying in their isolated houses will win the battle but lose the war, especially the Feng Shui war because:

nail households are likely surrounded by new and tall buildings. It create a subconscious feeling of being suppressed and lacking prosperity
dwindling luck because earth qi tends to migrate to newer structures
sickness and misfortune because qi is blocked by tall buildings surrounding them

In the long run, the nail households will lose more than the land developers. So this "a pain in the rear" Feng Shui has no winners but losers.

In search of the "Human Bagua" II

My previous blog has discussed the source of the Bagua or 8-trigrams. Now comes to the core of the discussion.

Middle Heaven Bagua (MHB) is also called "Yellow Emperor Bagua" because it is based on Lian Shan Yi which was attributed to the Yellow Emperor. The first version of MHB that I introduce here is based on Yuan-bao Jing (元包經)-- a classic written in Northern Chou Dynasty (557- 581 CE ). It is regarded as an elaboration of Gui Cang Yi (歸藏).

MIDDLE HEAVEN BAGUA BASED ON YUAN-BAO JING
At first glance, this bagua is clear yin-yang division or sex-segregation. The gua (trigram) order in this version are as follows:

Kun to Qian
Dui to Gen
Li to Kan
Xun to Zhen

Yuan-bao Jing model starts with Kun (female/ yin) and ends with Zhen (male/ yang). Females are on the left side and also on top of males. It shows "Yin first and Yang second" or matriarchy ideology. The word "Cang 藏" as in "Gui Cang 歸藏", stands for Kun or the receptive/ storage. However, the ordering of trigrams still reflects yin-yang balance concept.

MIDDLE HEAVEN BAGUA BASED ON GUI CANG YI

This looks like a "gay bagua" because both 90 and 180 degree paths of each trigram always reaches trigram of the same gender. However, if you look at the neighboring trigram in terms of the yin trigram (e.g, Kun/ Qian, Dui/ Gen and so on), you will find each "yao" of the trigram pair (the straight and broken lines) is yin-yang balanced.

There is no accurate information except speculations on the gua order of this MHB. All we know is it starts of Kun trigram with a right moving track.

Until one day a copy of Gui Cang Yi is discovered or unearthed, we cannot ascertain the validity of existing MHB creations. This is one major reason that most Feng Shui books do not bother to include or discuss about MHB. But it does not stop some marketers from boasting about their trove of "MHB secrets".

Anyway, all the bagua models (pre-, post- and Middle) reflect the rules of "yin-yang theory" like confrontation, mutual dependency and balancing. Bagua models are also the original sources of 5-element theory. Pre-heaven bagua reflects the mutual-controlling aspect of 5-element theory. Post-heaven bagua shows the nurturing aspect of the same theory. Middle heaven bagua, if proven, points to the combination aspects of 5-element theory.

SHAO YONG AND MIDDLE HEAVEN BAGUA
The Pre-heaven Bagua diagram that we have today actually shows up LATER than the Post-heaven one. It was put together by Shao Yong (1011–1077 CE) based on the following entry from Confucian classic Shuo-guo Chuan (說卦傳, Commentaries on Trigrams):
"天地定位，山澤通氣，雷風相薄，水火不相射，八卦相錯，數往者順，知來者逆﹔是故，易逆數也。"

This entry specifies the location and pairing of each trigrams. It shows the spatial and original aspects of the system. Trigrams also represent gender locations and relationship, so this Post-heaven bagua also reflects the human aspects of the system, especially in terms of power-relationship.

Shao Yong was probably one of the most talented Chinese cosmologists and Yi-Jing scholars. He had created Huangji Jingshi (皇極經世, Book of supreme world ordering principles) and the Plum Blossom Divination method. A logical question will arise: If Shao was smart enough to figure out the Pre-heaven Bagua sequence from the classics, why did he not reconstruct one for the "Human or Middle Heaven Bagua"? Did he feel the human aspects are already embedded in the Pre- and Post-heaven bagua?

MIDDLE HEAVEN BAGUA SECRETS???

We do not know if MHB exists or not, so is there such thing as a "MHB secret"? Anyway, someone claims "Turning Qian over to Kun" (扭轉乾坤, reverse the course of events ) is one of the MHB big secrets. I will give you a hint to crack it.

There are more than one way to do "Turning Qian over to Kun". Many people in the motivation, life-coaching and destiny-changing (or luck changing) business use similar technique. But people do not call it a MHB secret. It is just one of the basic yin-yang principles.

In search of the "Human Bagua" I

A student asks these questions: What is "Middle Heaven Bagua"? How come it is rarely seen or mentioned in traditional Feng Shui books?

Bagua or "8-trigrams" was created by the mythical ruler Fu Xi (伏羲, around 2800 BC). It is the oldest binary symbol system in the world. It started with "void" or nothingness to tai-ji or the "yin-yang fish" symbol. The tai-ji evoles to "yin" and "yang" as represented by one line and two broken lines. After 2 more iterations, the system of 8-trigrams or "bagua" emerges: QIAN乾 ☰, KUN坤 ☷, LI离 ☲, KAN坎 ☵, ZHEN震 ☳, XUN巽 ☴, DUI兌 ☱ and GEN艮 ☶ (Color stands for the elemental nature of the trigram).

"Bagua" becomes the building blocks of Chinese civilization including metaphysics. It is also probably the first creation model using binary symbols. Yi-Jing or "Book of Changes" elaborates the functions and interactions of bagua elements.

The Yi-Jing or Zhou-yi (周易) that we have today is part of a trilogy of:

Lian Shan Yi (連山易)-- Lian Shan means "continuous mountains" in Chinese. Pre-heaven Bagua is based on this classic. The initiating trigram is Gen(艮).
Gui Cang Yi (歸藏易) Gui Cang means "return and in storage" in Chinese. The initiating trigram is Kun (坤).
Zhou-yi (周易)-- Zhou stands for King Wen of Zhou Dynasty. Post-heaven Bagua is based on this classic. The initiating trigram is Qian (乾).

Unfortunately, Lian Shan Yi and Gui Cang Yi had been lost though part of their texts were quoted in Zhou-yi and other classics.

Chinese metaphysics always talks about the "Three components" or "San Cai" (三材)-- "Heaven, Human and Earth" (some people translated it as "holy trinity" or "cosmic trinity", too religious and value-laden for me). In terms of Feng Shui applications, Pre-heaven bagua stands for the heaven aspects and Post-heaven bagua for the earth aspects. Logically some people will look for the "human bagua" or the "Middle Heaven Bagua" because human beings stand between heaven and earth.

There are numerous versions of "Middle Heaven Bagua" created by the curious souls or metaphysics marketers over the centuries. Here I will show you two versions that are more "reasonable" because they are based on the bits and pieces of Lian Shan Yi and Gui Cang Yi as quoted in Zhou-yi or other ancient texts.

Starving Cows in China

China Daily has reported a bizarre memorial video posted online by a farmer. He uses the video to protest the death of his dairy cows due to land dispute with local government.

"The five minute video shows the impromptu memorial service in Zhaoling town, Luohe city in Central China's Henan province where it is claimed 230 dairy cows died after the farm's gates were locked and the land transferred due to unpaid rent."

In the video, the farm owner eulogizes the cows and prays for their safe passage to heaven. He also accuses government officials embezzle his funds. Last segment of the video shows Buddhist rituals are conducted to help the souls of these cows to migrate to Nirvana.

Here is the response from a government official:

"According to the contract, because the cattle farm didn't execute the contract, the local government has the right to deal with the land without negotiations and the cattle farm should take the consequences..."

Regardless of who is right or wrong, knowingly letting 230 cows starve to death is animal cruelty in any civilized society. This lack of compassion and respect for life is sickening.

Land disputes between local government and farmers are common in China. Local government officials team up with land developers to build housing estates to boost GDP. Farmers or local residents are driven away from their land with little compensations. This case is unusual as the victims are the defenseless dairy cows from Australia.

1001 Uses of Feng Shui Luopan

To the average person, a Feng Shui luopan looks complicated and mysterious. Many cartoons and TV series have used luopan as a magical tool with mysterious power.

In reality, a luopan is just an embellished compass with a big movable dial. It's primary function, similar to a regular compass, is to measure directions.

Besides creating a "mysterious look" and measuring directions for the Feng Shui masters, luopan serves other functions that you may not have heard before.

Luopan as ghost detector

When you see your luopan needle go nuts or magnetic polarities totally reversed during a Feng Shui audit, it could be a sign of ghost or spirit in the area. Ghost is a form of yin magnetic energy. Sometimes the disturbance to your luopan needle is so severe that it knocks out the needle and the luopan stops functioning (and you kiss a few hundred US$ goodbye OR read my article on how to regenerate a luopan hidden somewhere in this blog or other online discussion list).

Ghosts dislike luopan because the symbols there remind them of the time dimension, which is unpleasant for them. So you may use a luopan as a tool to drive ghosts away. Better still, you run away first to save your luopan from magnetic damage!

The pix on the left shows Master Sezto Fa-zheng had used a luopan as ghost-detector and a mini-coffin to catch a ghost inside a haunted casino.

Luopan as your door guard

Some people put a luopan on top of their front door to block out negative energy. 10 years ago I saw a Chinese supermarket in Sacramento (California) put a 2 feet long luopan on top of its front entrance! That was a huge (and expensive) luopan!

Using a luopan to raise the auspicious energy level of a house

Houses with waning energy or qi can use a luopan to raise its auspicious or wealth energy (methods listed in my "Practical Date-Selection Course").

Using a luopan to change the direction of a house

Black Hat Feng Shui is well-known for using crystals as their Feng Shui aspirin. Some masters in Taiwan and China use luopans instead. They advise clients to place a luopan facing any sha energy like T-junction, wall-knife and the likes to fix the sha qi problem.

Using a luopan as a weapon

Yes, I literally mean a weapon-- minimum size one foot in diameter. You can do some serious damages to whoever attacking you by hitting him/her with the corner or edge of a luopan. However, it is much cheaper and more efficient by getting a bottle of beer-- drink the beer and use the bottle to do the trick.

One Ring Master 一層大師

What do a circus and a Feng Shui practitioner have in common? They are both evaluated by the number of rings each has.

We can get a quick feel of how big or small a circus is by how many "rings" it has, like a 3-rings circus. As to the breadth of knowledge that a Feng Shui practitioner has, we can know by how many "luopan" or Feng Shui compass rings that s/he can handle .

A Feng Shui compass or luopan may have up to 50 rings. Each ring represents measurements of time and space in a certain manner represented by a Feng Shui school or perspective. So a Feng Shui practitioner's breadth of knowledge can be measured by the number of rings that s/he can handle. An average Feng Shui compass has about 20- 30 rings.

A Feng Shui compass with 25+ rings

The Feng Shui mania during the late 1990's and early 2000's has produced many "Flying Star Feng Shui" practitioners both in the west and in Hong Kong. Most of these practitioners become "masters" after a 20- 30 hours of training. They can only handle the "24-mountain ring" despite there are over 20 rings in their luopans. More often than not, they simply run the star number game in their Feng Shui audits and do not take into consideration of the surrounding land forms in the environment. An audit can be done in less than 30 minutes.

Some people in Hong Kong called these "Flying Star" practitioners as "One Ring Master" ( 一層大師 ) out of disdain, especially for those who think that Flying Star is the ultimate in Feng Shui.

"Coolest Tourist" or Feng Shui Hitchhiker?

China's Qing East Tombs (清东陵) is famous for its imperial tombs and auspicious Feng Shui. It was built in 1611 with 157 imperial family members including 5 emperors and 15 queens buried there. It attracts many tourists and Feng Shui tour groups.

In May 20, 2011, a mysterious tourist went to a site parallel to the tomb of emperor Shunzhi (r. 1644-61), dug a hole and attempted to bury the ash box of his deceased father there.

Tomb security people had stopped and arrested this man. He told the security that he thought if he could bury his father's cremated ashes in this imperial tomb with auspicious Feng Shui, he and his descendants will enjoy prosperity and good luck.

Other tourists called this man the "coolest tourist" while some netizens called him "Brother Superstition" (迷信哥).

Brother Superstition was "criticized" and "educated" while in captivity. He had admitted "guilt" on the spot and was released. Apparently the Tomb Security authority thinks that being a laughing stock is a good enough punishment for this Feng Shui nut. The news was broadcast on TV and newspapers across China.

Brother Superstition should come to the United States where the Bush family tombs are located. It must have great Feng Shui because it has already produced two U.S. presidents and one governor. But his problem is that cremated ashes do not give strong "resonance" to the descendants than burial remains (bones). The descendants may become president's butlers or housemaids instead of presidents or governors. It is also difficult to "hitch" a spot near the Bush family plot if he tries to get a big bag of bones into the ground.

According to many great Feng Shui legends, good Feng Shui (tomb and residential) is only part of the equation to riches and fame. It takes many generations of cultivation and accumulation of merits and virtues for a family to produce to a high ranking official like an emperor or president.

This has something to do with the idea of "Blessed people reside in blessed land" -- whether these blessed people are dead or alive.

"Coolest T-Junction in History"

I have run into an amazing Feng Shui news while surfing the Chinese web. Early last year in Gao-yi County of Hebei Province (河北高邑县), the Party Secretary Cui Yan-xuan (崔欣元) had blocked a 40-meter wide boulevard with a deactivated fighter-jet because the boulevard forms a T-junction with another street that points to his office building. Chinese netizens call this the "Coolest T-junction in history" (史上最牛丁字路).

There is a half-moon pond in front of the fighter-jet monument with three layers of flower beds. This will slow down the rush of qi or energy, according to Feng Shui theory "qi rides with wind and stops at water".

In addition, the front yard of the county office building has a circular "Sun pond" with a few thousand tons of rocks from "Tai Shan" .(泰山石). "Tai Shan" rocks are believe to block "sha qi" or clashing energy according to Chinese folklore.

Why put a fighter-jet in the middle of the road? Because a jet climbs or flies high-- symbolizes the Party Secretary Cui will climb up the official ladder fast.

This Feng Shui setup was designed by Cui's trusted Feng Shui master.

In terms of Form Feng Shui, T-junction is one of the worst sha energies. It causes accidents and deaths to occupants of the building that the qi or energy the T- junction points to.

But, can you spot the goof-up in this Feng Shui job? The T-junction does not really point directly to the County office building! There is a road blocking the rushing qi to the office! A simple and inexpensive fix will be just putting up two "STOP" signs in the junction, so all the traffic will stop and no more sha-qi.

Party Secretary Cui

Even if this T-junction really points to the County office building, the half-moon pond and the "Sun pond" should be good enough to reduce the rushing energy. Cui's Feng Shui master had "overdone" the Feng Shui largely due to his ingratiating act.

Accusations of "Feng Shui superstition" got Secretary Cui fired from his post. Netizens said he was "shot down by the fighter-jet".

Feng Shui can help your career, but too much of any good thing will do the opposite for you.

Common mistakes in reading wealth luck in 4-Pillars (Bazi)

In my 4P readings, almost without exception, everyone asks about "how's my wealth luck?" or "when I will be rich?" Yet the topic on wealth is quite confusing for 4P students, especially beginners. The followings are some common misconceptions:

1. Equating the number of wealth elements in a chart to the level of wealth that the day-master (chart owner) will have.
2. Similar to #1, assuming wealth luck period (whether annual or 10-year luck) will always bring in wealth.
3. Assuming the 4P reading is correct that indeed someone has a wealth luck coming, s/he thinks that money will fall from the sky without doing anything.
4. Assuming the 4P reading is correct that indeed someone has a wealth luck coming, s/he has indeed seen money coming and going with nothing or little left.

4P predictions are ridden with "conditions". If the condition is not made clear, the prediction can go both ways. #1 and 2 are correct only if the day-master is strong (or "follow wealth" profile/chart). If the day-master is weak, it means poverty for #1 and losing wealth for #2. The Chinese description for #1 is "poor person living in a big mansion" (like a maid) or in modern context, the teller working in a bank.

In 4P, wealth means wealth for strong day-master but means "lack of wealth" for weak day-master! For weak day-master, bi-jian or peer elements (same element to that of day-master) stand for wealth.

Imagine you do a 4P reading to someone with a weak day-master. You told him to "go all the way" in his stock or gambling endeavors because he is in strong wealth luck period. What will be the consequence? You may get shot.

On July 2, Wu Ju-ping, a 31 years old mother of a 7-month-old baby, risked her life to catch a neighbor's 2-year-old toddler falling from a 10-storey high apartment. She had caught the toddler with her right arm and fainted. The falling toddler had a force of over 375KG (about 750 lbs). The normal capacity of a human arm is 45KG. Her right arm was fractured into multiple pieces.

The toddler girl had suffered no external injury. But she has some internal injuries due to the immense shock when hitting the arm of Wu. She is still under observation in an intensive care unit.

"This is my instinct-- any mother would have done the same thing." ("这是本能，是一个母亲应该做的事情。") Wu told a news reporter.

"I will regret for the rest of my life if I had not stretched out my arms." Remarked Wu.

According to her physician, Wu would have been killed or paralyzed if the toddler fall on her head. She has a 95% chance of recovery and it will take 6 months. Her medical bill is around RMB 50,000 (about US$7700). The hospital will waive her bills.

Wu is a customer service rep in Alibaba, China's version of Amazon. Billionaire company chairman Ma Yun calls Wu "heroine" and "is honored to work alongside with a heroine."

Netizens in China give Wu the title "The Prettiest Mother" (最美妈妈) and "Heroine Mother" because they think only maternal instinct could have pumped up her adrenaline to handle over 375KG fallling force. They said that Wu is also the embodiment of the Confucian Utopian ideal of "Caring other elders as if they are your own elders; nurturing other children as if they are your own children" (老吾老以及人之老，幼吾幼以及人之幼).

In terms of Chinese metaphysics, Wu is the "Nobleman" or "helpful person" of this lucky toddler. In western world, she is the toddler's "guardian angel".

Saving a life with the possibility of losing one's own life is the ultimate karma credit that one can get.

Wu's arm is healing without surgery with Chinese medicine
The toddler, Niu-niu was in coma for 10 days and woke up in July 11. She is able to drink and move one hand. The landing side of her body when falling may become paralyzed.
Accolades and award money are given to Wu. She only accepts the RMB$ 200,000 from her employer Alibaba and donates the rest to charity.
Commercial and political interests try to get credit from her heroic deeds.
Her employer Alibaba, had a major scandal of cheating overseas buyers a few months ago, suddenly claims that Wu's deed is a result of company's emphasizes on morality and ethics.
Wu happens to be a Communist Party member, so the local political boss gives her a "3-8 red-flag master" title and run "Learn from Wu Ju-ping" campaign.
Chinese mass media is hungry for every minute details of Wu's past history-- from her way of placing stationery in her desk to her early school life. To their dismay, they do not find any heroic or extraordinary events that Wu had done in the past. Wu is an "average" woman from a peasant family.

In the last few months, just in the city of Minneapolis here alone, there were a few incidents that toddlers had climbed out of window in tall buildings and failed to their death. I thought of Ms. Wu when reading these tragic news. Niu-niu is extremely lucky running into his guardian angel Wu and has a second chance in life.

Steve Jobs' Spaceship-shaped Campus: Is it good for him?

On June 7, 2011, Apple CEO Steve Jobs presented his idea about a spaceship-shaped new Apple campus to the Cupertino City council. The 4-storied building is like a donut with empty space or courtyard in the center and curved glass all the way around. The campus will have 3.1 million square feet space and house 12,000 workers with 90% underground parking and 6000 trees for landscaping.

No cost estimates are given. But anyone with half a brain should know it will cost many arms and legs-- of the stockholders.

Is Steve Jobs a "green" visionary or simply another "modern Pharaoh"? Is this a reflection of his insecurity about his own mortality?

Bloggers and some readers of newspapers like the Wall Street Journal, wonder if this spaceship campus spells the beginning of the end of the Apple empire. Given Steve Jobs' health conditions, others even doubt if he will live to see the building completed.

I am not a business analyst. However, when I link the dots with Feng Shui of the spaceship campus and Steve Jobs' 4-Pillars of Destiny Chart, some patterns emerge that may not be favorable to him.

CHINESE ASTROLOGICAL READING OF STEVE JOBS' BIRTH CHART

This reading is based on Chinese Bazi or "4-Pillars of Destiny". I try to keep jargon to a minimum for the average readers here.

Steve is a weak fire-person with many earth elements in his chart. Earth stands for his talent and creativity. People with many talent elements in their charts are likely to be demanding, perfectionist and egoistic. Earth produces metal. Metal is the wealth element of a fire-person. So Steve Jobs is great in using his talent and creativity to produce wealth. Wood is the energy source of a fire person. His wood energy is pretty strong, so he is very resourceful.

In Chinese astrology, luck is calculated in terms of 10-years and annual luck periods. Between 2001 and 2010, Steve had entered a 10-years luck period with strong fire and metal energies which resulted in metal and wood energies battling each other in his chart.

Wood energy seemed losing the battle. Wood stands for liver and gallbladder in Chinese metaphysics. Steve had pancreatic cancer in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009.   This shows metal energy is not good for his health though it is great for his wealth. Metal stands for wealth for a fire-person.

Steve has just moved to a new 10-year luck period this year (2011). Unfortunately, it is still dominated by strong metal energy. He will have three major "astrological hurdles" to jump through during this (current) 10-years luck period.

The first hurdle is shared by everyone who will be be 60 years old in 2015 (including Bill Gate). The Chinese calender system is measured in terms of a sixty years cycle. People who were born in 1955 or the year of "wood-ram" (yi-wei) will reach another wood-ram year in 2015. This will create an astrological condition of "Fu-yin" or the "overlapping of annual luck pillar with birth-year pillar".   Depending on individual astrological chart and life history, this Fu-yin condition can be auspicious or bad omen for the person with this condition.

Unfortunate for Steve, wood or "yi" stands for liver in Chinese astrology and also Chinese Traditional Medicine. Ram or "wei" is "wood-storage or tomb" in Chinese metaphysics. So yi-wei year (2015) means "wood is entombed" or to Steve, his liver is "entombed". This could mean major liver problems for him.

What this means is that Steve Jobs should avoid metal energy, especially during 2015!

"Will Bill Gate or anyone born in 1955 have this liver problem?"

No, it is simply Steve Jobs had a liver transplant and a history of metal-wood energy confrontations. So he is more prone to have this entombment problem.

Besides the "big 60 hurdle", Steve Jobs is likely to have gallbladder and/or limb injuries in 2016 and a major health issue in 2017.   The energy distributions of his astrological chart in 2017 is similar to that of 2004 when he had pancreatic cancer.   2018 will also be a rough year for him. The energy of that year will be similar to 2009 when he had his liver transplant.

The years that you should be careful with Apple stocks (if Steve Jobs is still the CEO) are: 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2021.

FENG SHUI OF STEVE JOBS' SPACESHIP CAMPUS

To keep things simple, this reading will focus on the "spaceship" building. One major problem of circular-shaped building is the determination of the building's facing and sitting, especially if the building is surrounded by curved glasses. It is difficult to give an accurate Feng Shui audit without accurate data about the facing and sitting of a building. Energy will come in from all directions of the "spaceship". Energies inside the building will be mixed and "confused". People living in a circular-shaped building will prosper for a few years and then falling into hard time pretty quick.

The "blade"

In terms of basic Form Feng Shui, a circular building like this one is very Feng Shui unfriendly to buildings around it. This "spaceship" looks like a circular knife or cutter that can cut into ANY direction. Residents of buildings located within 100 meters with the view of the "blade" of this spaceship are likely to suffer disharmony between family members, surgeries, accidents, affairs, back-stabbing and losing money.

From the floor plan photo, the entrance seemed to be in the Northeast side, which is the auspicious wealth direction of the current 8th Feng Shui period (ends in 2023). This reflects Steve Jobs' current good wealth luck period even he takes only $1 salary per year!

Apparently Steve Jobs likes wood energy as he plans to increase tree counts from 3700 to 6000. This is interesting as his astrological chart needs wood energy to protect his liver. There will be many many trees inside the middle of the donut or spaceship building. This will constitute a large concentration of wood energy inside the perimeter of a metal energy building. The result will be these two antagonistic energies fighting against each other. The manifestation to people working in this building will be limb injuries, traffic accidents and wood related sickness.

Chinese character for "stranded"

In terms of Chinese symbology, the word for "stranded" or "tired" is 困 (kùn). This word consists of wood or tree inside a perimeter. This spaceship and trees formed the imagery of the Chinese word "stranded"-- definitely not auspicious according to the Chinese.

What can be deduced from the shapes of this campus land and buildings? The land looks like the bust of a bird with a gigantic eye and a huge mouth instead of a tiny beak. In terms of Chinese metaphysics, bird is considered a metal element. A ring or circular object is also considered a metal element or Qian. Qian stands for heaven, father, ruler, boss, active, thinking and more.

As mentioned above, metal is the wealth element for a fire-person like Steve Jobs. But metal here means more than wealth to Steve, it also means control like heaven, huge eye to pay attention to every details, big mouth to "eat" or expand into other business channels beyond computer (now in music and phone already). The shape of this campus echoes Steve Jobs' "Big Brother is watching" theme in his famous 1984 Mac commercial.

IS THE SPACESHIP-SHAPED CAMPUS GOOD FOR STEVE JOBS?
If you have read this far, you should know the answer already! Here are the major points:

Steve Jobs has wood-related sickness (liver and pancreas).
Metal energy "chops" wood energy (so it is bad for liver)
Circular building is strong in metal energy

The invisible hands of destiny seem to be toying with Steve Jobs. It reflects from his unconscious pursuit of metal and wood energy-- wealth and health. You can guess what will happen to Steve's new liver if he works inside the "spaceship" over an extended period.

Therefore, if Steve Jobs builds and moves into this spaceship edifice, it could possibly be his last office and a new beginning for Apple.

"Can you suggest some Feng Shui or metaphysics remedies for Steve?"

There are some Feng Shui and metaphysical remedies in my "Advanced Form Feng Shui" and "Destiny and Luck Management" courses that Steve could possibly use. But I think the effective remedy for him is following Bill Gate lead to donate a significant amount of his wealth to life-saving charities to build up his karma credit. Steve Jobs' health deteriorates when the new Millennium begins with the exponential increases of his fortune. This is a case of someone who is astrologically not strong enough to handle immense wealth. The likely consequence is severe illness or even sudden death. By unloading excess wealth for good causes, hopefully Steve Jobs can regain his health with the karma points generated.

Fate and Destiny: Joe's Choice

Joe, a friend of mine in Hong Kong, always runs into bad luck with financial decisions. He had lost his shirt when running a printing business many years ago. Property price shot up after he had sold his house. We check what stocks he bought and stay away from those stocks because the chance of price drops are very high. Earthquake happened while he was in Japan a few months ago and got stuck there for a while. We call him "Dark Dude" (黑仔 hēi zǐ) because he always runs into bad luck with financial matters.

The male side of Joe's family has a history of dying at middle age (around 50). Joe is approaching the big 50. He wants to quit his job, travel the world and spend all his money before he dies.

"What happens if you do NOT die after you have spent all your money?" I asked Joe.

"That probably is as worse as death -- I'll be penniless and homeless." Joe replied.

Here are Joe's choices and possible outcomes:
1. Do nothing and accept death at around 50 years old-- and died with money left
2. Do nothing and accept death at around 50 -- and survived with money and job intact
3. Quit job, travel the world and spend all money-- and died a happy man
4. Quit job, travel the world and spend all money-- and survived as a homeless man

What choice will you advise him to take given his "track records" with his destiny? What advice can you give him to improve his chance of surviving beyond 50?

Dog Story II: Dogs also grief

In 2008, I had blogged about a Chinese brown dog trying to save its deceased partner after a traffic accident. A few days a go I have stumbled onto the actual video footage in YouTube. The video is more moving than words. Here is the link:

The following is another incident about two stray dogs. The female dog was killed on the road and the brown male dog tried desperately to "revive" her. The video was broadcasted in Chinese TV and touched the hearts of millions.

The Chinese subtitles at the end of the video explain that the helper had fed the male dog a sausage. He ate half and stuffed the remaining half into the mouth of the deceased dog. The helper then poured some water into his mouth. He licked the mouth of the female dog. Eventually the male dog was exhausted trying to "revive" his partner. Helplessly, he lay on top of the female dog.

Later, the volunteer helper had found a tree near a farm house, dug a one foot deep grave and buried the female dog under the watchful eyes of the male dog.

Proper burial or disposal of deceased animal or roadkill is good for one's karma too.

Cats also grief like dogs. Here is a video showing a cat trying to revive its partner with its paws for hours.

Client-based favorable element testing in Bazi

The following is an extract from the chapter "Client-based favorable element testing" in my "Destiny and Luck Management: Basic Bazi Therapy and Enhancement" course.

Sometimes we run into situation that the favorable and unfavorable elements ("yong-shen" and "chou-shen"; aka "useful god" and "annoying god") derived from standard Bazi techniques does not match the life experience of the client. Other scenario is client’s chart is a tough one to decipher such as the one that is in the borderline of either fake follow or fake extreme strong profile. Another scenario is: when we said favorable element or good luck period—client thinks that he must be hitting the lottery or making tons of money if it is a “good luck period”. People have different definitions of “good” and “bad” luck.

To overcome these “definition of realities” problems, we have designed a "Life Experience Decoder Questionnaire". This questionnaire can calculate client’s “subjective” luck experience down to 6-months interval. By “subjective” we mean the evaluation of “good” and “bad” luck is based on client’s own subjective rating.

The results found from this questionnaire will match client’s own subjective life experience. This should be a more accurate reflection of how a client interprets his own destiny even though outsiders or objective observers may have a different interpretation. This method may not work well with client younger than 20 years old due to his relative short life history. But it gives better results with older clients.

This questionnaire is simple to administer, even without the supervision of the practitioner. Another advantage of this questionnaire is that the client can use the results to predict future lucks by filling in the scores in terms of favorable and unfavorable elements in the future year slots.

4P/ Bazi Terminology Conventions

NOTE: In 2009, I have posted "Translations of 4P or Bazi Terms" article. It becomes one of the most read message. People found it helpful to the understanding of the so-called "10 Gods" or transformation stars, especial those who have studied with different Bazi teachers using different terminologies. The article is a subset of the Appendix section of my "4P Bootcomp" video course. Here I post the whole Appendix with more information below.

TRANSLATIONS OF 4P OF BAZI TERMS

There are no commonly agreed translations of 4P terms. Different schools or teachers translate 4P terms according to his/her personal preferences. There are three major rules used in translations:

1. Literal translations: This simply gives a faithful and very often, horrible (in terms of culture shock) translations of the terms. For examples, “shi-shen” is translated as “eating god”, “qi-sha” becomes “7-killings”, “shang-guan” becomes “hurting officials or officers” and the likes. Problem with literal translations is that it may bias student perceptions towards certain terms as “bad” or negative because it sounds horrible. In reality, every one of the “10 gods” or ‘transformation stars” (my terminology) can be positive or negative depending on the composition of the 4P chart. Another common misconception is the ubiquitous uses of the term "god" in 4P, like "useful god" (yong shen), "enmity god" (chou shen) and the like, making 4P sound "religious" when it is actually more statistical and logical in nature.

2. Pin-yin translations: This gives a transliteration of the 4P terms like “shi-shen”, “zheng-guan” and etc. It takes some time to get used to these foreign terms. But it is great when you go back to the original Chinese texts or switching teachers/school.

3. Translation based on interpreted meanings: This translates the 4P terms based on the understanding of the translator. For example, shi-shen and shang-guan are translated as “output” stars. But different people have different understanding of the terms, so the translations can sometimes be confusing and shocking as well. Good translations under this should be “value-free” or NOT “value-laden”. It should also give meanings that are faithful or close to the original meanings of the terms. The translated terms should not influence the perception of the readers and students.

4. Mixing of all of the above

The following examples are the common translations of 4P's "10 gods" or "transformation stars":

My personal bias is trying to make the translated terms as neutral as possible, so as not influencing the reader's perception. Each of these 10 "stars" or "gods" can be positive or negative depending on the combination of the natal chart and luck periods.

I do not mean other translations are not as "good" or "horrible" as mine. Translations reflect the worldviews, command of the Chinese language and mental conditions of the translators.

Who has killed Osama Bin Laden?

My last message discusses the influence of Feng Shui on Bin Laden's death and skipped the destiny and karma aspects. This message will focus on the astrological aspects using Chinese Bazi astrology using Laden's birth day and hour.

Bazi or "4-Pillars of Destiny" translates one's birthday and hour into 5-elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. By analysing the proportions, combinations and interactions between within one's birth chart, we can explain why some events happened and predict what will happen.

OBAMA VS. BIN LADEN: metal ox vs. fire rooster
The epic struggle between "righteous and evil" bought President Obama and Bin Laden into a direct confrontation (note: both claim to be the righteous side). Let's check their current luck by examining their 4-pillars charts. Don't worry if you do not know Bazi terminology. There will be "plain language" explanations after listing the charts.

BIN-LADEN 4P CHART
YEAR: DING-YOU (fire-metal; clashing 2011 Grand Duke)
MONTH: GUI-MAO (water-wood; fan-yin with current 10-year luck)
DAY: XIN-SI (metal-fire)
HOUR: GUI-SI (water-fire)

CURRENT 10-YEAR LUCK: DING-YOU (fu-yin year-pillar, fan-yin month-pillar)
2011 ANNUAL LUCK: XIN-MAO (fan-yin 10-year luck and year-pillar)

Many people had read Bin Linden's chart before, so we will only focus on his current luck. He is a strong xin metal. His favorable elements (yong-shen) are: fire, wood and water. Unfavorable elements are: earth and metal. Bin Laden's current 10-year luck are ding-you (fire-metal) and 2011 annual luck is xin-mao (metal-wood). Therefore half of the current luck elements are unfavorable. But just looking at favorable/unfavorable elements is not enough. We have to check the interactions between luck pillars and the pillars within the natal chart.

Here are Bin Laden's destiny problems in 2011:
1. Year pillar is identical to 10-year luck pillar (fu-yin)
-- this can be positive or negative, but negative in the long run
2. 10-year luck pillar fights with month pillar (fan-yin)
-- this is very serious as month branch is the "dam" of the chart, can be death for people over 50
3. 10-year luck pillar fights with 2011 annual luck pillar (fan-yin)
-- prone to accident/injury and obstacles

In summary, 4 out of 6 pillars in his chart are "shaken" and his "dam" is clashed. His animal sign rooster also clashes the Grand Duke or ruler of the year (rabbit). Something will happen even if there is no raid.

The date he died was a strong earth day which is not good for strong metal. The way he died reflects ding-you fu-yin. Ding stands for fire, eye and heart in Bazi. Ding-you is his year pillar and located in the left side of a traditional Bazi chart. Bullet is small metal (you-metal). One bullet blew his left eye away and one bullet hit his chest (likely to be his heart).

OBAMA 4P CHART (short form!)
YEAR: XIN-CHOU (metal-earth)
MONTH: YI-WEI (wood-earth)
DAY: JI-SI (earth-fire)
HOUR: JIA-XU (wood-earth)

CURRENT 10-YEAR LUCK: GENG-YIN (metal-wood)
2011 ANNUAL LUCK: XIN-MAO (metal-wood)

Obama is a strong earth, likes metal, wood and water and dislikes earth and fire. The date he ordered action was not good for strong earth. But Obama's current 10-year luck is geng-yin (metal-wood) with annual luck xin-mao (metal-wood)--- all are his favorable elements. But the major differences between his current luck and Bin Laden's are: Obama has no major clashes or fighting action in the pillars (other than the clash between year and month pillar, which was born with. Bin Laden had the same situation. So both of them had divorced parents at early age).

The person with better curernt luck won the cat and mouse game. It is a game over for Bin Laden.

If Bin Laden had escaped this raid, he probably could last till 2017 or ding-you (fire-metal) year.

WHO HAS KILLED BIN LADEN?
The Navy Seals? Obama? Karma? Fate? Feng Shui? Bin Laden himself? I do not have the exact answer.

Some people on the web argued that bad Feng Shui has killed Bin Laden. We could have fired CIA and let Feng Shui masters do the assassination jobs if Feng Shui were so powerful. Do you remember the Chinese saying about destiny -- "Fate first, luck second and Feng Shui third"? I would think Feng Shui at most contribute 20- 30% to his demise.

In Bin Laden's case, Feng Shui and personal luck were synchronized. My experience always finds bad personal luck associates with bad Feng Shui most of the time. My past blog had written about firing your Feng Shui guy if you think your current luck is great (and hiring one if your luck sucks!).

How about karma? This is a sensitive subject and we prefer not touching it since different people have different ideas about Bin Laden's role in all these global events.

Mono-causal theory could not explain the forces behind Bin Laden's death. A combination of the factors listed here--- fate, karma, Obama, Feng Shui and Bin Laden himself, would probably explain it, though people may assign different weight to each factor.

Personally, I would give Feng Shui 20- 30% influence, fate and luck 60% and the balance is karma. Karma reward or retribution do not necessarily happen in current lifetime but can be carried over to next life or even spread across a few lifetimes.

Hidden Feng Shui Secrets of Bin Laden's Hideout Compound

Osama Bin Laden's hideout compound in Pakistan illustrates some principles of classical Chinese Form Feng Shui.

SHAPE OF THE COMPOUND PLOT
The compound plot shape is an imperfect triangle. The big triangle can further be distinguished into 3 smaller triangles and one imperfect square where the main residence is built.

According to Form Feng Shui, the "5-element" nature of triangle is fire. House on a triangular plot is prone to violence, injuries, fire, sickness, lawsuits, bad luck, dwindling wealth and accidents. This is due to energy or qi distribution is uneven on a triangular plot.

How do Feng Shui experts fix a plot like this one? Amazingly, the remedy is "almost" there in Laden's compound. The designer of this house has partitioned the plot into different sections with the main residential area shaped into a square. He could have done a good Feng Shui fix IF he was not preoccupied with privacy and security. He has reshaped the plot back into a giant triangle by building connecting walls on the triangular plot. Is this karma or not?

Normal and simple Feng Shui fix would have been simply planting lots of trees on the triangle sections to mask out the negative Feng Shui effect.

FACING AND LAND FORMS

Based on the data from the New York Times, Laden's hideout compound is approximately facing NNW or largely North. Bin Laden was known for having kidney problem. Kidney problem is related to water energy within the human body. North is water in nature according to Chinese Feng Shui. So unconsciously he had lived in a house with a facing direction beneficial for him. Yet the house shape of the compound is fire in nature.

The surrounding landform of the house has all the "4-animals" of classical Feng Shui. It has back support moutain or black turtle at the back (south), green dragon mountains at the left (west) and white tiger mountains in the right (east). However, the white tiger mountains are huge and dominant and green dragon mountains are the weakest.

Green dragon stands for "noblemen" or helpful people. White tiger stands for "mean people" or people who make your life (or Bin Laden's) miserable. From the landform we can deduced that Laden had some support but people who are against him are much stronger.

"What can you do to fix this landform Feng Shui Problem?" The answer is simple if done on paper. Simply turn the base of the triangle facing east or have the back of the house facing east and facing of the house to west side. This will convert the original white tiger into extreme strong back support, the old back support into stronger green dragon and turns the white tiger into a tiny pussy cat.

HIDDEN FENG SHUI SECRETS
Chinese Feng Shui asserts that living environment affects the well-being and behaviors of its residents. Its residents will in turn shape or reflect the Feng Shui nature of the environment. The satellite photos of Laden's hideout compound give stunning reflection of this Feng Shui principle.

At first glance, the satellite photo does not seem exciting other than seeing a triangular compound. With a little imagination and "Feng Shui eye", you will see quite a few "knives" around the compound. Triangles can be considered as knives too, but here we just look at the knife-shaped areas.

In Form Feng Shui, knife-shaped forms stand for bloody events, fighting, surgery and even deaths. If the house is on the "blade" of a knife form, the individual represented by that direction will likely be affected.

The satellite photo on the left shows a long army knife cutting into the southwest corner. Southwest side represents older woman or wife of the house. In the raid, it is reported that one of Laden's wives was killed.

A chopping knife blade cuts into the northeast side of the plot. Northeast stands for the younger son. One of Laden's sons was killed.

Last but not the least, if you look carefully, the land plot of Bin Laden's compound is part of a big cleaver knife. He was lucky that the main residence is built on the upper part of the knife and not on the blade. That may explain why he could hide there for five to six years.

WHO HAS KILLED OSAMA BIN LADEN?
Is it bad Feng Shui, karma, fate or President Obama? For the time being, we keep things simple by looking only at Feng Shui part. Other factors will be discussed in another message.

According to Wikipedia, "Osama consistently dwelt on the need for violent jihad to right what he believed were injustices against Muslims perpetrated by the United States and sometimes by other non-Muslim states." So he believes in using violence to change the world. And amazingly, the nearby Feng shui or environment of his hideout compound reflects his belief. This could be an example of individual's power in affecting Feng Shui environment. With so many knife-forms hidden, his hideout compound can be named as "Knife Vein". Knife stands for violence and bloody events.

Bad Feng Shui land forms like this one normally will unlesh its negative effects within 3 to 6 years of residency. Osama should have left the compound after 5 years at the most. Another possible fix would be purchasing the triangular shaped farmland in the east side and merge it with existing plot to form an imperfect rectangle and hence getting rid of the triangular shape.

In conclusion, bad Feng Shui is partially responsible for Osama bin Laden's demise. Come back here to check out the destiny part of the equation.
