Bagian atas shock absorber diikat pada body atau frame dan bagian bawahnya kelower arm.&lt;br /&gt;Suspensi Rigid biasanya menggunakan &lt;b&gt;pegas daun&lt;/b&gt; yang dibuat dari bila bajah lengkung dan mempunyai elastisitas cukup tinggi suspensi jenis ini banyak digunakan pada roda belakangnya.Salah satu ujung pegas dipasangkan pada frame/kerangka dengan menggunakan bushing, sedangkan ujung lainnya dipasang pada kerangka menggunakan Hangger Spring (ayunan pegas).&lt;br /&gt;Karakteristik&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;TRAILING ARM DENGAN LATERAL ROD&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pada tipe ini posisi axle yang biasanya dilakukan &lt;b&gt;pegas daun&lt;/b&gt; pada pegas tipe paralel, selanjutnya telah disempurnakan oleh leading arm atautrailing arm dan lateral control rod. Bila dibandingkan dengan suspensi rigid yang menggunakan pegas daun, suspensi ini mempunyai beberapa keistimewaan sebagai berikut:&lt;br /&gt;Kenikmatan berkendara akan baik karena konstanta pegas dapat dibuat lebih kecil&lt;br /&gt;Sukar terjadi wind-up karena trailing arm sifatnya lebih kaku&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;TRAILING ARM DENGAN TWIST BEAM&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Konstanta tipe ini amat sederhana dan kompak, dan digunakan pada suspensi roda belakang pada mobil yang letak mesinnya didepan dan penggerak roda depan (FF), contohnya pada Daihatsu YRV.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;TIPE 4-LINK&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Suspensi tipe ini digunakan pada suspensi belakang. Diantara suspensi rigid, tipe inilah yang dapat menghasilkan kenikmatan kendaraan terbaik.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;SUSPENSI MODEL BEBAS&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Karakteristik suspensi model bebas(independent suspension) adalah sebagai berikut:&lt;br /&gt;Unsprung Weight dapat dijaga agak rendah dan karakteristik cengkeraman roda-roda pada jalan akan menghasilkan kenikmatan berkendara yang baik dan stabil.&lt;br /&gt;Pada suspensi model bebas, pegas-pegas hanya menopang dan tidak membantu memposisikan roda-roda(sehingga diperlukan linkage)&lt;br /&gt;Karena tidak ada hubungan antara roda kiri dan kanan, maka lantai dan posisi engine mounting dapat diperendah. Ini berarti titik berat kendaraan menjadi rendah dan ruang penumpang serta ruang bagasi akan menjadi lebih luas.&lt;br /&gt;Konstruksinya agak rumit&lt;br /&gt;Tread dan alignment berubah dengan adanya gerakan roda-roda yang turun-naik.&lt;br /&gt;beberapa macam tipe suspensi model bebas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;TIPE MACPHERSON STRUT&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Suspensi ini banyak digunakan pada sistem suspensi model bebas (independent suspension) untuk roda depan mobil ukuran kecil dan sedang. Tipe ini juga digunakan pada roda belakang mobil tipe FF (Front engine, Front Wheel Drive), contohnya pada Daihatsu Taruna.&lt;br /&gt;Karakteristik&lt;br /&gt;Konstruksi suspensi relatif sederhana&lt;br /&gt;Komponennya lebih sedikit dan ringan, maka unsprung weight dapat berkurang.&lt;br /&gt;Karena suspensi ini hanya memerlukan tempat yang sedikit, maka ruang mesin dapat ditambah.&lt;br /&gt;Jarak antara titik penyangga suspensi besar, sehingga sedikit pengaruhnya pada front wheel alignment disebabkan salah pemasangan. Dan hanya diperlukan penyetelan alignment toe-in saja.&lt;br /&gt;Pada suspensi tipe Macpherson Strut, shock absorber berfungsi sebagai bagian dari linkage suspensi yang menopang beban vertikal. Shock absorber menerima sedikit beban dari roda-roda dan sedikit bengkok. Ini menimbulkan penekanan kearah lateral stress (A dan B seperti diperlihatkan pada gambar) yang menyebabkan terjadinya gesekan antara piston rod dan rod guide, dan antara piston dan inner shell sehingga menyebabkan bunyi yang tidak normal dan mempengaruhi kenikmatan kendaraan. Problem ini dapat dikurangi dengan cara memberikan offset pada pegas-pegas bagian tengah strut atau shock absorber sehingga terjadi gaya-gaya a dan b yang berlawanan dengan gaya A atau B&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;TIPE DOUBLE WISHBONE&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Karakteristik DOUBLE WISH BONE Geometri letak arm yaitu panjang, posisi dan sudut-sudutarm akan menentukan bagian-bagian roda bila membelok atau melalui tonjolan. Bagian ini berpengaruh pada kemudi, cengkeraman pada jalan dan keausan pada ban. Bila upper dan lower arm sejajar dan sama panjangnya, roda-roda tidak akan miring padawaktunaikdanturun. Sebaliknya unsprung&lt;br /&gt;weight yang terlalu besar cenderung menyebabkan body mudah terguncang.&lt;br /&gt;Oskilasi dan bergoyangnya bagian pegas dari kendaraan terutama body&lt;br /&gt;berpengaruh besar pada kenikmatan kendaraan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;OSKILASI SPRUNG WEIGHT&lt;/b&gt; terdiri dari :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;PITCHING&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• adalah oskilasi turun-naik bagian depan dan belakang berhubungan dengan&lt;br /&gt;titik berat depan dan belakang kendaraan.&lt;br /&gt;Hal ini terjadi kususnya bila kendaraan melalui jalan yang kasar yang banyak&lt;br /&gt;berlubang. Pitching juga lebih mudah terjadi pada kendaraan yang pegasnya lemah&lt;br /&gt;dibandingkan yang pegasnya lebih keras.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;BERGULIR (ROLLING)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•Ketika kendaraan membelok atau melalui jalan yang bergelombang. Salah satu pegas satu sisi kendaraan mengembang dan pada sisi lainnya mengkerut. Hal ini mengakibatkan body berputar(Rolling) dalam arah yang lurus(dari sisi kesisi).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;*MELAMBUNG (BOUNCHING)&lt;/b&gt; adalah gerakan naik-turunnya body kendaraan secara keseluruhan. Bila kendaraan berjalan pada kecepatan tinggi melalui jalan yang bergelombang, maka seolah-olah terjadi gerakan naik-turun. Juga mudah terjadi bila keadaan pegas-pegas lemah&lt;br /&gt;*&lt;b&gt;ZIG-ZAG (YAWING)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•adalah gerakan body kendaraan arah memanjang, kekanan dan ke kiri terhadap titik tengah(centerline). Pada permukaan jalan dimana terjadinya pitching seperti juga terjadi yawing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;OSKILASI UNSPRUNG WEIGHT&lt;/b&gt; terdiri dari:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Hopping&lt;/b&gt; adalah gerakan melambung(bounching) roda-roda keatas dan kebawah yang biasanyaterjadipadajalan-jalanyang berombakpadakecepatansedangdantinggi.&lt;br /&gt;Tramping adalah gerakan oskilasi turun-naik pada arah yang berlawanan pada roda-roda kiri dan kanan, menyebabkan roda-roda kiri dan kanan melompat terhadap permukaan jalan. Dengan cara&lt;br /&gt;mencegah roda-roda agar tidak terkunci, sistem ini mencegah kendaraan agar tidak&lt;br /&gt;slip atau menjadi tidak stabil. Pengereman dapat dikendalikan dalam keadaan stabil,&lt;br /&gt;bila adanya hubungan antara tahanan didalam system rem dan tahanan antara ban dan jalan.&lt;br /&gt;Tahanan system rem &gt; Tahanan antara ban dan jalan&lt;br /&gt;Akibatnya bila roda depan mengunci, tidak mungkin untuk mengarahkan kendaraan. Bila roda belakang mengunci maka terjadi perbedaan didalam koefisien gesekan(coefficient of friction) diantara sisi kiri dan kanan pada permukaan jalan.&lt;br /&gt;ABS mengontrol tekanan minyak rem yang bekerja pada silinder roda, sehingga roda tidak akan mengunci bila pengereman berlaku secara tiba-tiba. Ini akan membantu dalam menjaga kestabilan arah selama pengereman emergency.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Sejarah ABS&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;System rem anti-lock Toyota pertama kali diperkenalkan pada tahun 1971&lt;br /&gt;untuk kendaraan-kendaraan dalam negeri. Sistem ini adalah sistem roda&lt;br /&gt;belakang (ABS dua roda) dimaksudkan untuk mengurangi kehilangan&lt;br /&gt;kestabilan arah pada waktu mengerem diatas permukaan jalan yang licin.&lt;br /&gt;Beberapa penyempurnaan telah dilakukan terhadap sistem ini dan pada&lt;br /&gt;tahun1983 diperkenalkan ABS empat roda(four wheel ABS)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Prinsip Dasar Pengoperasian ABS&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bila kendaraan dijalankan pada kecepatan konstan, maka kecepatan kendaraan dan roda-roda adalah sama(dengan kata lain ban-ban tidak membuang). Akan tetapi, bila pengemudi menginjak pedal rem untuk memperlambat kendaraan, maka kecepatan roda-roda akan berangsur-angsur berkurang dan tidak lagi sesuai dengan kecepatan body kendaraan yang melaju dalam kelambatan (inersia) sendiri. Kerugian bagi bengkel dan sekolah, antara lain:&lt;br /&gt;a. Biaya dan waktu pengangkutan korban kecelakaan.&lt;br /&gt;b. Hilangnya waktu kerja instruktur dan siswa yang menolong&lt;br /&gt;sehingga menghambat kelancaran program;&lt;br /&gt;c. Mencari pengganti waktu praktek&lt;br /&gt;d. Mengganti dan memperbaiki alat dan obyek kerja yang rusak&lt;br /&gt;2. Kerugian bagi korban, antara lain:&lt;br /&gt;a. Berbagai akibat yang akan diderita seperti cacat fisik,&lt;br /&gt;b. Rasa trauma yang berkelanjutan dan kerugian paling fatal&lt;br /&gt;adalah bila korban meninggal dunia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Peraturan &lt;b&gt;keselamatan kerja&lt;/b&gt; harus diberlakukan di mana saja&lt;br /&gt;oleh setiap orang yang bekerja, maupun oleh instansi yang memberikan&lt;br /&gt;pekerjaan. Antara lain dari hal yang harus dilakukan seseorang untuk&lt;br /&gt;melaksanakan &lt;b&gt;keselamatan kerja&lt;/b&gt;:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;a. Bersikap mawas diri terhadap kemungkinan terkjadinya&lt;br /&gt;kecelakaan;&lt;br /&gt;b. Bekerja dengan sungguh-sungguh, cepat, teliti, dan tekun;&lt;br /&gt;c. Menghindari sikap melamun dalam bekerja;&lt;br /&gt;d. Usahakan untuk tidak ceroboh dalam bekerja;&lt;br /&gt;e. Istirahatlah bila sudah lelah dan bosan;&lt;br /&gt;f. Menghindari sikap bercanda dalam bekerja;&lt;br /&gt;g. Memahami prosedur kerja dan tidak mencoba-coba;&lt;br /&gt;h. Waspada dalam bekerja;&lt;br /&gt;i. Menggunakan alat pengaman dalam bekerja dan tindakan lainnya&lt;br /&gt;yang menunjang untuk selamat dalam bekerja.&lt;br /&gt;Sebelum seseorang bekerja pada workshop (bengkel kerja),&lt;br /&gt;diharuskan terlebih dahulu memahami tentang petunjuk dan peraturan-peraturan&lt;br /&gt;tentang &lt;b&gt;keselamatan kerja&lt;/b&gt;. Walaupun setiap pekerjaan selalu&lt;br /&gt;ada resiko, akan tetapi dengan memahami terlebih dahulu sebab-sebab&lt;br /&gt;terjadinya kecelakaan dan mengikuti petunjuk-petunjuk kerja, maka&lt;br /&gt;jumlah kecelakaan pasti akan berkurang. Menurut perkiraan 70% dari&lt;br /&gt;kecelakaan yang terjadi di workshop disebabkan oleh ketidaktelitian atau&lt;br /&gt;kelalaian kerja.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Kecelakaan akibat kerja dapat dicegah dengan:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;a. Disiplin terhadap peraturan perundangan;&lt;br /&gt;b. Standarisasi prosedur kerja;&lt;br /&gt;c. Pengawasan;&lt;br /&gt;d. Penelitian bersifat teknis;&lt;br /&gt;e. Riset medis;&lt;br /&gt;f. Penelitian psikologis;&lt;br /&gt;g. Penelitian secara statistik;&lt;br /&gt;h. Pendidikan dan latihan keselamatan&lt;br /&gt;i. Petunjuk &lt;b&gt;keselamatan kerja&lt;/b&gt; yang jelas dan tertulis&lt;br /&gt;Workshop yang bersih dan tersusun rapi, sangat membantu&lt;br /&gt;dalam mengurangi jumlah kecelakaan. Alat-alat dan benda kerja jangan&lt;br /&gt;sampai ditinggalkan pada tempat di mana seseorang dapat terjatuh.&lt;br /&gt;Gang dan jalan yang dilalui oleh pekerja harus bersih. Oleh karena itu,&lt;br /&gt;bangku kerja, alat-alat dan benda kerja harus tersusun secara rapi dan&lt;br /&gt;sistematis. Koil yang digunakan pada sistem PEI dirancang khusus untuk sistem ini. Jadi berbeda dengan koil yang digunakan untuk sistem pengapian konvensional. Koil ini tahan terhadap kebocoran-kebocoran listrik tegangan tinggi&lt;br /&gt;2. Unit CDI merupakan rangkaian komponen elektronik yang sebagian besar adalah kondensor dan sebuah SCR (Silicon Controller Rectifier). SCR bekerja seperti katup listrik. Sewaktu-waktu katup dapat terbuka dan listrik akan mengalir menuju kumparan primer koil agar pada kumparan sekunder terjadi arus induksi. Dari induksi listrik pada kumparan sekunder tersebut arus listrik diteruskan ke elektroda busi.&lt;br /&gt;3. Magnet yang digunakan pada sistem ini mempunyai 4 kutub, 2 buah kutub selatan dan 2 buah kutub utara. Letak kutub-kutub tersebut bertolak belakang. Setiap satu kali magnet berputar menghasilkan dua kali penyalaan tetapi hanya satu saja yang dimanfaatkan yaitu yang tepat beberapa derajat sebelum TMA (Titik Mati Atas).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Cara kerja PEI&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bila mesin berputar pada kumparan putaran rendah, (L1) mengisi pada putaran rendah sedangkan kumparan putaran tinggi (L2) mengisi pada putaran tinggi. Pada setengah putaran magnet kedua kumparan (L1 dan L2) mengalami dua kali pergantian arus listrik. Untuk putaran pertama dari 0o sampai 90o arus yang menuju N2 adalah arus + , maka arus dapat melalui N2 ke kondensor (C). Dari 90o sampai 180o arus akan berubah arahnya. Jadi yang menuju ke N2 adalah arus – sehingga tidak dapat diteruskan ke kondensor (C) tetapi oleh N3 dialirkan ke timing circuit. Kedudukan kopling berada pada poros engkol/kruk as dan ada juga yang berkedudukan pada as primer persnelling/poros utama transmisi (main/input shaft transmisi) seperti halnya kopling mekanis. Pada mobil-mobil modern, suspensi dan axle dibuat lebih kuat dari yang terdahulu dan permukaan jalan dibuat datar sehingga Camber positif tidak begitu diperlukan. Akibatnya ban disetel dengan camber mendekati Nol (ada beberapa mobil dengan camber Nol). Beberapa mobil bahkan dibuat dengan camber negatif untuk menambah ketahanannya pada waktu membelok tajam.&lt;br /&gt;CAMBER POSITIF&lt;br /&gt;Peranan Camber Positif adalah sebagai berikut :&lt;br /&gt;1. Mengurangi beben vertikal&lt;br /&gt;Bila Camber Nol, beban pada spindle akan diberikan ke garis pusat ban dan spindle, ditandai dengan F’ pada gambar. Ini akan mengakibatkan spindle atau steering knucle mudah bengkok. Dengan camber positif maka beban akan diberikan pada sebelah dalam spindle, yang ditandai dengan F, hal ini mengurangi gaya yang bekerja pada spindle dan steering knucle.&lt;br /&gt;2. Mencegah roda slip&lt;br /&gt;Gaya reaktif F, yang sama dengan beban kendaraan, diberikan kepada roda dengan arah tegak lurus terhadap jalan. F dibagi dalam F1, yang tegak lurus dengan sumbu spindle dan F2 yang sejajar dengan sumbu spindle. F2 mendorong roda kedalam, membantu mencegah roda slip terhadap spindle. Bearing roda sebelah dalam dibuat lebih besar dari sebelah luar untuk mendukung beban ini.&lt;br /&gt;3. Mencegah Camber menjadi Negatif karena beban&lt;br /&gt;Bila kendaraan dibebani, bagian atas roda cenderung miring kedalam karena perubahan komponen suspensi dan bushing yang berkaitan. Akan tetapi, bila pengemudi harus terus menahan roda kemudi agar kendaraan berjalan lurus atau harus mengeluarkan tenaga yang besar untuk membelokkan kendaraan, maka akan merasa sangat tegang dan melelahkan. Untuk menghilangkan masalah tersebut dan juga untuk menjaga agar ban tidak cepat aus maka roda-roda dipasang pada body (chassis) dengan besar sudut tertentu sesuai dengan persyaratan tertentu. Sudut-sudut ini disebut “Wheel Alignment”.&lt;br /&gt;Mengemudi adalah mudah selama roda-roda disetel secara tepat, karena roda –roda disetel secara tepat, karena roda kemudi akan tetap pada posisi lurus bila dijalankan pada jalan yang lurus dengan sedikit bantuan dari pengemudi, dan hanya membutuhkan sedikit usaha untuk memutarnya pada saat membelok (Pengemudian mudah jika semua elemen yang membuat hubungan sudut-sudut Wheel Alignment-nya tepat).&lt;br /&gt;Tetapi bila salah satu dari elemen tersebut tidak tepat, maka akan timbul masalah sebagai berikut :&lt;br /&gt;1. Toyota mengumumkan bahwa mereka telah menjual 500000  hibrida di Amerika Serikat. Dan Ford telah menghasilkan sebanyak 100.000.&lt;br /&gt;Ford mengatakan kendaraan signifikan berguling dari jalur perakitan di pabrik yang Kansas City pada hari Selasa.&lt;br /&gt;Ford Butuh waktu lima tahun untuk mencapai sasaran. Tetapi perusahaan memprediksi bahwa tonggak masa depan akan terjadi jauh lebih cepat, karena menambahkan model Fusion dan Mercury Milan hibrida di baris terdepan di musim semi ini.&lt;br /&gt;Bill Ford, Chairman  perusahaan, mengatakan pencapaian itu perwakilan Ford "meningkatnya komitmen" untuk power train canggih teknologi, dan menegaskan rencana perusahaan untuk membawa generasi baru dari kendaraan listrik dan plug-in hibrida ke pasar pada 2012.&lt;br /&gt;Toyota, sementara itu, tidak membedakan kapan atau di mana, atau bahkan yang dari enam hibrida bensin-listrik kendaraan adalah sepersejuta telah  dijual. Namun prestasi itu diumumkan hari Rabu di kantor pusatnya di Torrance, California&lt;br /&gt;Butuh waktu satu dekade, untuk sampai ke tonggak ini. Sistem ini&lt;br /&gt;biasanya terdapat pada mesin yang mempunyai sistem kelistrikan di&lt;br /&gt;mana baterai sebagai sumber tegangan sehingga mesin tidak dapat&lt;br /&gt;dihidupkan tanpa baterai. Hampir semua baterai menyediakan arus listrik&lt;br /&gt;tegangan rendah (12 V) untuk sistem pengapian.&lt;br /&gt;Dengan sumber tegangan baterai akan terhindar kemungkinan&lt;br /&gt;terjadi masalah dalam menghidupkan awal mesin, selama baterai,&lt;br /&gt;rangkaian dan komponen sistem pengapian lainnya dalam kondisi baik.&lt;br /&gt;Arus listrik DC (Direct Current) dihasilkan dari baterai&lt;br /&gt;(Accumulator). Baterai tidak dapat menciptakan arus listrik, tetapi dapat&lt;br /&gt;menyimpan arus listrik melalui proses kimia. Pada umumnya baterai yang&lt;br /&gt;digunakan pada sepeda motor ada dua jenis sesuai dengan kapasitasnya&lt;br /&gt;yaitu baterai 6 volt dan baterai 12 volt.&lt;br /&gt;Di dalam baterai terdapat sel-sel yang jumlahnya tergantung pada&lt;br /&gt;kapasitas baterai itu sendiri, untuk baterai 6 volt mempunyai tiga buah sel&lt;br /&gt;sedangkan baterai 12 volt mempunyai enam buah sel yang berhubungan&lt;br /&gt;secara seri dan untuk setiap sel baterai menghasilkan tegangan kurang&lt;br /&gt;lebih sebesar 2,1 volt. Sementara untuk setiap sel terdiri dari dua buah&lt;br /&gt;pelat yaitu pelat positif dan pelat negatif yang terbuat dari timbal atau&lt;br /&gt;timah hitam (Pb). Pelat-pelat tersebut disusun bersebelahan dan diantara&lt;br /&gt;pelat dipasang pemisah (Separator) sejenis bahan non konduktor dengan&lt;br /&gt;Pelat-pelat ini direndam dalam cairan elektrolit (H2SO4). Akibat&lt;br /&gt;terjadinya reaksi kimia antara pelat baterai dengan cairan elektrolit&lt;br /&gt;tersebut akan menghasilkan arus listrik DC (Direct Current). Adapun&lt;br /&gt;reaksi kimia yang terjadi adalah sebagai berikut :&lt;br /&gt;PbO2 + H2SO4 + Pb -&gt; Pb SO4 + H2O + PbSO4&lt;br /&gt;PbO2 = Timah peroksida&lt;br /&gt;PbSO4 = Sulfat Timah&lt;br /&gt;H2SO4 = Cairan Elektrolit&lt;br /&gt;H2O = Air&lt;br /&gt;Jika baterai telah digunakan dalam jangka waktu tertentu maka&lt;br /&gt;arus listrik yang tersimpan di dalam baterai akan habis, oleh sebab itu&lt;br /&gt;diperlukan sistem untuk melakukan pengisian kembali.
