Google To Stop Showing Ads On Right Side Of Desktop Search Results Worldwide

"A long-running test is now rolling out for desktop queries: Google will no longer show ads to the right of its search results, with two exceptions."

Google is rolling out a dramatic change that removes ads from the right side of its desktop search results, and places ads only at the top and/or bottom of the page. At the same time, the company says it may show an additional ad — four, not three — above the search results for what it calls “highly commercial queries.”

All of this represents the conclusion of a test that began all the way back in 2010, and has been tweaked over the years since then. Search Engine Land readers — particularly some outside the U.S. — notified us late last year that they were seeing the top-only ads more frequently.

A Google spokesperson has confirmed to Search Engine Land that the change is now rolling out to all searches in all languages worldwide. Ads will not appear on the right side of desktop search results, with two exceptions:

Product Listing Ad (PLA) boxes, which show either above or to the right of search results
ads in the Knowledge Panel

The additional fourth ad that may show above the search results will only show up for highly commercial queries, according to Google’s official statement on the change:

“We’ve been testing this layout for a long time, so some people might see it on a very small number of commercial queries. We’ll continue to make tweaks, but this is designed for highly commercial queries where the layout is able to provide more relevant results for people searching and better performance for advertisers.”

To clarify, the elimination of right-side ads impacts all desktop searches worldwide; the addition of the fourth ad above search results will happen for “highly commercial queries.” This would involve searches like “hotels in New York City” or “car insurance” and the like.

The removal of all right-side ads obviously makes the desktop and mobile search results more similar. On mobile, though, Google typically shows either two or three ads at the top of the search results.

Google Not Indexing Your Sitemap URLs? Might Be A Canonical Issue

A Google Webmaster Help thread has a webmaster all upset that Google shows that they have indexed none of the URLs they submitted via the XML Sitemap file. Obviously, this can be concerning to any webmaster.

The thing is, you need to be careful what Sitemap file you submit. If you verify a non-www version with Google Webmaster Tools and submit a www version of your sitemap, or visa versa, Google may be very literal and show you that they didn't index any non-www versions of your URL.

All the URLs listed in your XML Sitemap are non www. and they all permanently redirect to the www. version (which is your preferred domain). That explains why these specific URLs are not indexed. In order to fix that, you'll need to specify the right URLs with www., resubmit your Sitemap and wait for it to be processed again

So technically, it is an "easy fix" and the site is indeed being indexed. But a report like this can be scary to see in Google Webmaster Tools.

Throughout the web, a paginated series of content may take many shapes—it can be an article divided into several component pages, or a product category with items spread across several pages, or a forum thread divided into a sequence of URLs. Now, if you choose to include rel=”next” and rel=”prev” markup on the component pages within a series, you’re giving Google a strong hint that you’d like us to:

Consolidate indexing properties, such as links, from the component pages/URLs to the series as a whole (i.e., links should not remain dispersed between page-1.html, page-2.html, etc., but be grouped with the sequence).
Send users to the most relevant page/URL—typically the first page of the series.

The relationship between component URLs in a series can now be indicated to Google through rel=”next” and rel=”prev”.

Outlining your options

Here are three options for a series:

Leave whatever you have exactly as-is. Paginated content exists throughout the web and we’ll continue to strive to give searchers the best result, regardless of the page’s rel=”next”/rel=”prev” HTML markup—or lack thereof.

TRAI Foolishly Released Over 1 Million E-Mail Ids

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has released the list of email IDs from which it received responses regarding net neutrality or the #SaveTheInternet campaign that rallied the country’s attention around the Net Neutrality issue.

The e-mails leaks happens that all of the emails sent to the TRAI are now publicly visible.

TRAI on March 27 had put up a consultation paper on its website asking users from India to give their views on net neutrality in India. The last day to vote for the campaign was April 24. The list is published on TRAI website and has emails categorized by date; the data is available for all dates between March 27 and April 24, except April 14 and 15. The document can also be searched via keywords.

Every person who has sent an email to TRAI has their email address listed onthis TRAI page, for example, which has a list of 10,801 emails from that campaign. That’s not all;, the TRAI has 16 such lists, and your mail to them might just be within one of those. Further, clicking through the links on this these pages leads to complete emails, many of which have addresses, phone numbers and other personal details in the signatures.

But the worst part of the story is that TRAI website has been attacked soon after #netneutrality email addresses revealed publicly by TRAI itself which means all the email-ids must be with the hackers by now.

Most of the responses sent to TRAI were via ‘Savetheinternet.in’ — a site created by a few proponents of net neutrality in India. unwittingly or is it foolishly TRAI has exposed email address of all those who had submitted their responses and made them publicly available for spammers to scrape. But no one thought their emails would be public when they sent their responses in.

Thanks to TRAI, spammers and database sellers now have email ids of a cohort of 1 million Indians who (largely) support #NetNeutrality.

The recurring question in SEO URLs is whether to use a hyphen, or dash, (these-are-hyphens) or an underscore (these_are_underscores) to separate your words. Does Google recognize both of them as word separators?

The short answer is that you should use a hyphen for your SEO URLs. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, but does not treat an underscore that way. Google treats and underscore as a word joiner — so red_sneakers is the same as redsneakers to Google. This has been confirmed directly by Google themselves, including the fact that using dashes over underscores will have a (minor) ranking benefit.

Again, SEO URLs should use hyphens to separate words. Do not use underscores, do not try to use spaces, and do not smash all the words together intoonebigword. As of 2012, dashes are still the best way to optimize your SEO URLs.

In 2015, Your Job As An SEO Isn’t Actually SEO

Regardless, the title is accurate — in a sense. Yes, you are still responsible for driving organic traffic. That isn’t going anywhere. But because the way to drive organic traffic isn’t anything like the way we used to drive organic traffic, SEOs have to become more cross-functional. These days, when you say you “do SEO,” you really do about a million other things that historically aren’t considered SEO.

If that’s the case, then what else is in our job description?

Content Developer
This part of an SEO’s job should not come as a surprise to you given how ingrained “content is king” has become in our heads.

There is no way you can rank well in search engines without good content, and I see more copywriters being directly integrated into the SEO team rather than living on a different team. In many cases, the requirements of being a non-technical SEO now include content writing.

Quality content can be hard to create; it’s not exactly something you can teach. There’s no formula you can follow (although Nate Dame does have a pretty good list of what makes quality content), and it does take a lot of time (I’ve spent 15 minutes on one Facebook post), so don’t assume that good content is something we just have lying around.

User Experience Advocate

SEO and user experience (UX) got off on the wrong foot, and I blame SEO. The spammy things we were doing years ago to manipulate the algorithm were the furthest thing from a good user experience, so it’s no wonder UX professionals hated us.

Things are totally different now. Search engines want to see what users want to see.

Though Google hasn’t come out to say that good UX impacts your search rankings, there’s a lot of speculation that it will be adding mobile UX into its algorithm. That means that if you want to drive more organic traffic to a page, that page has to provide a good user experience.

Digital Strategists

Over the past year or so, I’ve noticed a fundamental change in how SEOs operate — specifically the marketing side of SEO, not the technical side.

We’re becoming more thinkers than doers. Instead of taking direction from what others have decided will change on the site, we’re getting more involved in shaping that conversation. If you’re not, then you need to push to be.

We spend so much time on the site and so much time obsessing over every data point on how customers are using our site that it’s completely fair to say we know what’s best for the site. Of course, I’m not advocating for SEOs to be the sole decision maker, but SEO today means playing a larger role in overall site strategy, and that’s something we need to be prepared for.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people who view SEO in a silo, so it’s up to us to not pigeonhole ourselves into just keyword research or title tag updates.

Creative Marketer

It used to be so easy to get links: a few directory listings, some press release submissions, a handful of articles posted to EzineArticles. Mindless work, yes, but boy was it easy.

There is definitely no such thing as easy link now. Every link, whether manually or organically acquired, requires a lot of thought and a little bit of work, and we have to be more creative in the way we’re getting links.

Instead of “building links,” we’re building things people naturally want to link to, and that’s forcing SEOs to think more like marketers. What does our target audience want?

Thinking like this, you’re not creating SEO campaigns or link building campaigns; you’re creating marketing campaigns that build brand awareness, boost social mentions, generate PR buzz and yeah, builds some links. Here are some great examples;

The You vs. John Paulson campaign MahiFX ran in 2011 (Moz has a good write-up of the case study).

Expedia’s Find Yours Campaign – 68 linking root domains (LRDs), 196 total links, ~1,000 social shares.

Froont’s brilliant GIFS about responsive design – 273 LRDs, 2,473 total links, ~11,000 social shares.

Union’s employee appreciation day – 56 LRDs, 468 total links, ~12,00 social shares. (Sadly, the Vimeo link got all the action, but all the press buzz secured a handful of home page links.)

Obviously, you can’t run things like the above by yourself. You’re going to have to rely on other departments — and that brings me to probably the most important job of any SEO in 2015….

Cheerleader

One of my boss’ favorite sayings is, “The best SEO’s will put themselves out of a job.” While that’s not exactly motivating me to be the best SEO (I kid), the point is that the best SEOs have done such a good job at educating other teams on SEO that, after a while, there doesn’t need to be someone advocating for “right thing for SEO” because that’s naturally been weaved into the fabric of every digital professional’s job.

Do I think we’re ever going to get to that point? Not in the next 10 years, but the fact remains that SEO in theory isn’t hard, no matter how many people try to tell you it’s a Jedi magic trick.

Everything you do online could have some effect on your organic traffic, so SEOs have to rely on other teams to understand how their actions affect our KPIs. You have to rally these evangelists in creative, in social media, in development, in IT, and in copywriting, educating them on how what they do is actually SEO. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to meet your goals.

Matt Cutts’ announcement heralds the end of an area, really, because quick-fire guest blogging was one of the last vaguely acceptable techniques by which one could quickly manipulate rankings. While Google’s tougher stance has got some online marketers upset, others have applauded Cutts for tightening up this final area in which wild-west-SEO’ers could ply their trade. Now, almost for the first time since the birth of the internet, the playing field has begun to level out. Webmasters who put time and effort into their design, online communities and content creation are going to set the standard from now on.

What is domain Authority?
Domain authority is a measure of the power of a domain name and is one of many search engine ranking factors. Domain authority is based on three factors: Age, Popularity, and Size.

SEO gurus Moz can be credited with the metric known as DA or domain authority. Moz’s own search algorithm gauges the quality of any given site based on a huge complex combination of factors including onsite and offsite, taking in to account things such as diversity of Backlinking domains to come up with a score between 0 and 100. A brand new site, for example, will have 0 whereas a very high authority site might have 80/100. Domain Authority gives those working in the field of online marketing a useful metric by which to consider the apparent quality of any site.

Dynamic URLs vs Static URLs

Issue:

Websites that utilize databases which can insert content into a webpage by way of a dynamic script like PHP or JavaScript are increasingly popular. This type of site is considered dynamic. Many websites choose dynamic content over static content. This is because if a website has thousands of products or pages, writing or updating each static by hand is a monumental task.

There are two types of URLs: dynamic and static. A dynamic URL is a page address that results from the search of a database-driven web site or the URL of a web site that runs a script. In contrast to static URLs, in which the contents of the web page stay the same unless the changes are hard-coded into the HTML, dynamic URLs are generated from specific queries to a site's database. The dynamic page is basically only a template in which to display the results of the database query. Instead of changing information in the HTML code, the data is changed in the database.

But there is a risk when using dynamic URLs: search engines don't like them. For those at most risk of losing search engine positioning due to dynamic URLs are e-commerce stores, forums, sites utilizing content management systems and blogs like Mambo or WordPress, or any other database-driven website. Many times the URL that is generated for the content in a dynamic site looks something like this:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date

A static URL on the other hand, is a URL that doesn't change, and doesn't have variable strings. It looks like this:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/the-challenges-of-dynamic-urls.htm

Static URLs are typically ranked better in search engine results pages, and they are indexed more quickly than dynamic URLs, if dynamic URLs get indexed at all. Static URLs are also easier for the end-user to view and understand what the page is about. If a user sees a URL in a search engine query that matches the title and description, they are more likely to click on that URL than one that doesn't make sense to them.

A search engine wants to only list pages its index that are unique. Search engines decide to combat this issue by cutting off the URLs after a specific number of variable strings (e.g.: ? & =).

For example, let's look at three URLs:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=67890&sort=date
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=13579&sort=date

All three of these URLs point to three different pages. But if the search engine purges the information after the first offending character, the question mark (?), now all three pages look the same:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php

Now, you don't have unique pages, and consequently, the duplicate URLs won't be indexed.

Another issue is that dynamic pages generally do not have any keywords in the URL. It is very important to have keyword rich URLs. Highly relevant keywords should appear in the domain name or the page URL. This became clear in a recent study on how the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN, rank websites.

The study involved taking hundreds of highly competitive keyword queries, like travel, cars, and computer software, and comparing factors involving the top ten results. The statistics show that of those top ten, Google has 40-50% of those with the keyword either in the URL or the domain; Yahoo shows 60%; and MSN has an astonishing 85%! What that means is that to these search engines, having your keywords in your URL or domain name could mean the difference between a top ten ranking, and a ranking far down in the results pages.

Solution:

So what can you do about this difficult problem? You certainly don't want to have to go back and recode every single dynamic URL into a static URL. This would be too much work for any website owner.

If you are hosted on a Linux server, then you will want to make the most of the Apache Mod Rewrite Rule, which is gives you the ability to inconspicuously redirect one URL to another, without the user's (or a search engine's) knowledge. You will need to have this module installed in Apache.This module saves you from having to rewrite your static URLs manually.

How does this module work? When a request comes in to a server for the new static URL, the Apache module redirects the URL internally to the old, dynamic URL, while still looking like the new static URL. The web server compares the URL requested by the client with the search pattern in the individual rules.

For example, when someone requests this URL:
http://www.somesites.com/forums/the-challenges-of-dynamic-urls.html

The server looks for and compares this static-looking URL to what information is listed in the .htaccess file, such as:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule thread-threadid-(.*)\.htm$ thread.php?threadid=$1

It then converts the static URL to the old dynamic URL that looks like this, with no one the wiser:
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345

You now have a URL that only will rank better in the search engines, but your end-users can definitely understand by glancing at the URL what the page will be about, while allowing Apache's Mod Rewrite Rule to handle to conversion for you, and still keeping the dynamic URL.

If you are not particularly technical, you may not wish to attempt to figure out the complex Mod Rewrite code and how to use it, or you simply may not have the time to embark upon a new learning curve. Therefore, it would be extremely beneficial to have something to do it for you. This URL Rewriting Tool can definitely help you. What this tool does is implement the Mod Rewrite Rule in your .htaccess file to secretly convert a URL to another, such as with dynamic and static ones.

With the URL Rewriting Tool, you can opt to rewrite single pages or entire directories. Simply enter the URL into the box, press submit, and copy and paste the generated code into your .htaccess file on the root of your website. You must remember to place any additional rewrite commands in your .htaccess file for each dynamic URL you want Apache to rewrite. Now, you can give out the static URL links on your website without having to alter all of your dynamic URLs manually because you are letting the Mod Rewrite Rule do the conversion for you, without JavaScript, cloaking, or any sneaky tactics.

Another thing you must remember to do is to change all of your links in your website to the static URLs in order to avoid penalties by search engines due to having duplicate URLs. You could even add your dynamic URLs to your Robots Exclusion Standard File (robots.txt) to keep the search engines from spidering the duplicate URLs. Regardless of your methods, after using the URL Rewrite Tool, you should ideally have no links pointing to any of your old dynamic URLs.

You have multiple reasons to utilize static URLs in your website whenever possible. When it's not possible, and you need to keep your database-driven content as those old dynamic URLs, you can still give end-users and search engine a static URL to navigate, and all the while, they are still your dynamic URLs in disguise. When a search engine engineer was asked if this method was considered "cloaking", he responded that it indeed was not, and that in fact, search engines prefer you do it this way. The URL Rewrite Tool not only saves you time and energy by helping you use static URLs by converting them transparently to your dynamic URLs, but it will also save your rankings in the search engines.
