One of the drawbacks to having an only child is that there is no easy playmate on which to palm them off when you need to get things done, or are just bored with listening to them. I enjoy spending time with Monkey, but equally sometimes I need a break and so does he. Normally we achieve this during periods at daycare, but we have spent the last two weeks on term break so no activities for us.

Three Becomes Four

The three of us has become four of us this week with a visit from Monkey's Granny. Granny lives overseas so we only see her once or twice a year and she is here for five weeks.

It is always funny introducing new people into our family dynamic, although we are lucky that Granny is pretty laid back. Monkey is very excited to have someone new around to play with, especially someone who has no real demands on their time and so has plenty of time for fun and games.

Monkey's bedtime is my favourite time of day. Not because it means he is going to bed and I get some peace and quiet - although on some days that is actually the reason - but because it reminds me of what a little family unit we are.

How It All Began

Once upon a time, there was an only child. She met another only child, fell in love, and got married. A few years later, they said goodbye to their families and embarked on an adventure to the other side of the world. That adventure turned into a long-term stay and a few years after that a child was born and two became three.

That, in a nutshell, is the story of how my husband, our son and I became a little family unit of three. And a unit of three we are likely to remain - unless an accident happens one day! When we decided to try for a baby, I felt we were ready. We were ready in all those mundane ways like being financially stable, owning a home and being healthy, but I also felt ready in another strange kind of way. I felt mentally and emotionally ready, like this was the right time to be having a baby.
