What’s Wrong With Most Resumes?

Description:

7 key resume flaws and what to do about them.

Content:

Having written, edited, and critiqued literally thousands of resumes in all fields for over 30 years, I have come to the inescapable conclusion that most resumes fail to capture the attention of potential employers for 7 predictable (and curable) reasons. These are:

1. Lack of focus. Most resumes I see look like a random laundry list of everything the person has done in his or her career. There are also endless lists of skills, personal characteristics, numerical results, verbs, unnecessary detail, and often details that are not written clearly or would not be understood by someone outside of the industry or job that is being discussed. I believe that what everyone tries to do on a resume is to make everything stand as equally important. Can’t be done! As a result, the typical resume is unorganized in the sense that it lacks a dominant focus, a clear sense of purpose and direction. You have got to ask yourself what your major goal is in writing your resume, and EVERYTHING you do needs to be guided by that goal.

2. Not “tailored” for the type of position being sought. Even if your resume makes it clear what type of job (or specific job title) you are applying for, most resumes I see do not emphasize in the body of the resume the factors that relate to that job title. For example, I just worked with an experienced nurse who wants an administrative or supervisory position. Her initial resume emphasized all of her technical knowledge and experience (which is considerable), because she was convinced that the more she is viewed as a competent nurse, the better her chances for a managerial position. This is true only up to a point. She also needed to emphasize those responsibilities and accomplishments in her career that would be of value in an administrative role, so that a potential employer could quickly see that she has had “enough” managerial activities (in addition to her medical skills) in her background to justify hiring her. And it was important that these managerial activities not get lost in a sea of technical nursing details.

3. Not written for a “skimmer.” Everyone knows that potential employers do not “read” resumes in detail at first. They “skim” it, usually taking perhaps only 15 to 30 seconds to see if it is worth reading in detail. By trying to make everything “stand out” (such as by using differing fonts, underlining, boldfacing, italics, writing items in columns or boxes, and other devices), you have no control over your reader’s eye. When your reader is skimming, his or her eye will naturally start at about the top center, but then quickly scan down the left side of the page. The left side of the page is where the battle for your reader’s attention is fought. And, therefore, THAT is where you had better put the most important words, items, and information.

4. Failure to ask the two fundamental questions. The two most important questions in deciding what to emphasize in your resume are: 1) What does the reader want to see FIRST? 2) What do I want the reader to see FIRST? What most readers want to see FIRST (before they decide to either throw out your resume or read it more carefully) can vary. Most, however, are looking for key factors, usually academic degrees, certification and licensing, job titles, or key skills related to the job. Some may look first for gaps in employment, school activities, recent training, or other factors. You also want your reader to see certain items FIRST. Perhaps you want your reader to see how you helped your present employer improve the quality of their product or service, or some other accomplishment. You need to emphasize that. In any case, you want to make sure that your reader can find all of these “firsts” without having to read in detail.

5. No clear benefit statement to the potential employer. Why does any organization hire you, me, or anyone else? It is basically for two reasons: To solve the organization’s problems and to achieve the organizations goals. And usually those problems and goals are directly related to the organization’s bottom-line needs – increasing profits by increasing income, reducing costs, improving customer satisfaction, increasing company visibility, improving quality and teamwork, enhancing productivity and efficiency of personnel, and so forth. There should be a brief and prominent statement that your resume reader sees first that mentions those benefits and how (in your particular area of expertise) you can help the company realize those benefits.

6. Key accomplishments are buried in the middle of the resume. I frequently read items like this: “Developed a specialized quality assurance program which resulted in a 20% reduction in production costs in the third quarter.” What’s key here? I believe it’s the 20% cost reduction. Therefore, that is the way to write the item: “20% cost reduction in production in the third quarter by developing a specialized quality assurance program.” Your skimmer will see the “20% cost reduction,” even if they don’t read the whole item.

7. Unique strengths not recognized and not made clear. After 30 years of providing career and job search counseling to perhaps 15,000 individuals, you naturally begin to see predictable patterns. And yet, it is still of crucial importance to recognize that no two people are alike. Each one of us has our unique strengths, or one-of-a-kind combination of experiences, or individual career path, or specialized knowledge and expertise. Often we do not emphasize what is unique about our background in a resume, let alone even recognize it. But it is your uniqueness that makes you stand out from others. If you have trouble seeing it, get some guidance and figure out what it is, and place it prominently in your resume. It very often determines whether your resume will be thrown out or you will be asked in for an interview.

There are many different solutions to the above resume flaws, but I believe that it is critical to find solutions to them if you want to make sure your resume is in the less than 5% that are not immediately discarded.

That no body bothers about your comfort? You do not get any appreciation? That your smallest mistake is being blown out of proportion and you are made to feel bad? You may be getting emotionally abused? Are you getting a strong sense of discomfort? If yes, please read on.

Before you decide that you are being victimized, please think about what is happening at your work place. If possible talk to few co-workers and tell them of what you think. After thinking and deliberating on this, decide if the victimization is real and not imaginary.

In some instances, we feel strongly about a issue, but after further investigation we find that the truth is different. Therefore it is important to find out the truth before you proceed further. Once you decide that the victimization may be real, write all those demands, and behaviors that make you feel bad about. Find out about those that you can cope with. And separate those that you feel impossible to bear any more. Prepare a note explaining all that is happening and talk to your top management about this. Please be aware that if your top management is not just, you will be further shouted upon for making imaginary complains. But if they understand, they will surely talk to you and try to redress what they can. This situation depends on the individuals and one has to decide himself/herself about the worst-case scenario. There is no growth in a life when you get the feeling of being victimized in your job. We all must grow and therefore take steps to come out of this problem.

The Playstation 2 consoles, packed with 2 games and 3 controllers ended in $73.09. That is the price for an Xbox 360 game here at Puerto Rico. The only thing that went into my mind was just a plain: Wow!

Finding console at such a low price tag was shocking to me as a video games fan and as a wholesale business entrepreneur. It sure was interesting to see the differences in prices when comparing with other online sellers on eBay that were selling less items in a package of the same Playstation 2, and most of the other sellers in the auction received more bids than the current guy who sold the Playstation 2 with all the other games and accessories for pennies on the dollar. That is the power of eBay.

You can find items on virtually any kind of merchandise you desire for your home or better yet for your new start-up retail business. Today, there are actually thousands of retailers buying wholesale items on eBay for their offline stores locally. It is obvious. Most distributors that are making the entry into the wholesale market need to brand themselves get customers and receive traffic and ultimately profits to survive as a brand new business, so where do they go? Many distributors and plenty of wholesalers are selling right now on eBay, mostly high ticket items that range in the thousands- but that is just the beginning.

This is more common now than ever, and can be due to people actively looking for better prospects, or involuntary reasons, such as redundancies or downsizing. There are some exceptions, but the days of jobs for life is largely a thing of the past.

Work is an important part of life and being able to derive satisfaction from our work is extremely important, whatever we do. Many people, who are doing what they always wanted to do, often do not even consider that they are working as such.
This is certainly not the case for many people, who dread going to work.

For anyone who wants to make more of themselves and their lives, it is essential to develop a healthy attitude towards work, and a strong work ethic. If you are in a job or a situation that you dislike, you must be prepared to make a decision. You must decide to either make the most of the job and do the best work you can, or take action to get out and find a job you'll enjoy more. We all spend a large part of our lives working, so these are the only real choices for anyone who considers self-respect and job satisfaction to be important. Or, best of all, can you make a living doing what you enjoy, or at least have an interest in?

If there are any prospects of promotion in any position, a person who works hard and is eager and willing, will almost certainly be noticed by the people who can help. There are plenty of people who pride themselves on doing as little as possible, beating the system or getting one over on their bosses. These people are also likely to spend a lot of time complaining about their lot, but probably quite like things as they are, and enjoy the petty office politics that it's so easy to get involved with in many organisations. They almost certainly lack the courage or ambition to actually make any changes or real progress, and probably never will.

To progress within any company, you often have to be prepared to ignore the negative attitudes of some peers and colleagues. This shouldn't be too difficult if you are serious about personal and career development, and building a better life for yourself. It's a safe bet that within any organisation almost everyone of influence knows who the good workers are, and which staff members are likely to be promoted, or survive any staff cutbacks.

There are times when we all feel unhappy with our position, and it can be easy to think that someone else has been given opportunities that should have come to us. However, there are few, if any people who have managed to complain their way to higher positions. People who become successful are usually those who are prepared to make the best of whatever job they are doing, try to find better ways to do their job, and are prepared to put in more effort than they are paid for.

These people are also much more likely to enjoy job satisfaction than people who only do the minimum required to get by.

Try putting yourself in the position of your employer and honestly answer this question: If you owned the company, are you the type of employee that you would want working for you?

On the other hand, there are people who are ambitious and feel they have made their best efforts, but are being ignored by their bosses. In these cases moving on is the only option, and there is no doubt that any person with a strong work ethic and ambition will quickly find a position where they will be appreciated.

Also essential to your career progress and employability in a today's competitive workplace, is keeping up to date with the latest trends and developments in your field, and learning new skills. Time and money spent on education and personal development will be your best investment ever. This can make the differences to you as a person that determines whether you get that ideal job or promotion, or start the business you always dreamt of.

Whether you desire to work your way up the corporate ladder, or eventually start your own business, having a strong work ethic is one of the most vital of all character traits. If you are already self-employed, you'll be well aware that you certainly won't get far on your own without it.

I'm not suggesting that anyone should become a workaholic and spend all their time working, and neglect their family, friends and leisure activities. There is no doubt balance is required.

However, if you come to be known as a person that can be relied upon to get a job done, who is efficient and productive, has initiative and is prepared to accept challenges, and has a positive attitude to your work and your co-workers, you will be considered a great asset by any well run organisation. And you'll enjoy your work much more. You will also quickly become the type of person who can successfully manage and motivate other workers, or run your own successful business.

Then, what pertaining to the poor marketer, you ask? Pardon me, but I do not mean poor in the financial judgement (although more than likely, their pockets are not deep enough). What I truly meant was someone who cannot even serve food to a hungry crowd. There is no way that these people are able to present their products well enough. If this happens, I can confidently say that you also will not have any success promoting their products.

So even if i do encounter a poor marketer offering me upwards of 75 percent commissions, I will rather step back unless they actually allow me to assist them with their poor sales presentation from the start.

Finally, we have come to the commission thief. My sincere advice is, just do not deal along with them. So how do you actually identify this commision thieves? The beginning step is, to suspect anyone coupled with their own private affiliate program (example not Clickbank, Commission Junction, Linkshare, etc.) a potential affiliate thief. If you have to sign up through a private program where the company is going to write you the check personally (or send you the paypal commission), then there is a cause to worry.

Well I have had my share of pretty bad experiences.

Do not get me wrong though. You can still sign up with other people's private affiliate programs. The most crucial thing is to make sure that they have a good reputation amongst their affiliates.

One good way to tell if the program is really trustworthy is to actually find out how long they have been established. Do they have any outstanding references? By nature, any good company will not mind us checking with a top affiliate and see if they wouldn't mind being a reference. Hey, you have every right to make sure you are going to get paid.

So remember, if you are searching for a Day Job Killer, affiliate marketing has an endless potential. Expressly make sure to follow these tips and keep away from nasty programs to promote including the cheapskate programs, the poor marketer, and the commission thief as mentioned earlier.

Catching the Crooks: Is Your Wholesaler Dodgy or Legitimate?

Fleeced, ripped-off, cheated, conned. We're all afraid of losing money to wholesalers who turn out not to be the real deal. The horror stories can certainly be very off putting - especially to those just getting started. The trick is to spot it and stop it before it's too late!

So what are signs that you're dealing with a crook?

In our experience, there are 6 particular indications that you may not be dealing with a legitimate wholesaler:

* The wholesaler doesn't sound business-like or professional when answering the phone. For example, he will answer with a plain ‘Yes?' or ‘Hello?', without identifying himself or the business name.
* The wholesaler doesn't request your business license or sales tax ID during the initial contacts. Most true wholesalers will require one of these. While this is not a hugely important deal, if you are looking at dealing in large amounts you will need to get registered and should check that the wholesaler is registered as well.
* The wholesaler gets shifty when you request a product sample. Most wholesaler are only to happy to offer a sample of their product (usually at a higher price) so if they do not offer this be careful and question their reasons for not offering one.
* The wholesaler's claims to take a secure form of payment (credit card, Paypal etc...) but later turns around and says they only accept wire transfer or western union. Not all wholesalers that take western union and wire transfer are scammers, but this is the most common way scammers operate and you should always steer on the side of caution if you are asked to pay be these methods when not having dealt with or knowing the person first.
* Their website offers no physical address or contact phone for you to get hold of them. Be blunt, ask them for a contact address and phone number and if it is ok if you come in and have a look around their offices. If they are serious this will be no problem at all for them.
* They claim they don't currently have stock in and still expect you to pay up front. If this has been happening make sure you get some photographic evidence of their stock with the days newspaper or something (while this doesn't always work, it means some one must have stock that they know)

Although these are not hard and fast rules, you should certainly proceed with caution if one or more of the above apply to a new wholesale contact you have made.

Do not put a great big read "for sale" sign on the piece!, you need something subtle and tasteful, possibly in the bottom right corner of the piece. If you have 3D creations that need to be on a shelf, then make sure your business card is attached with the price written on the back neatly or typed on..

This is another great way to get you and your business known in the community, and is a great way to get people to look at, and appreciate and hopefully purchase your creations!

The franchise agreement outlines the way your business will work within your franchise system. It gives both you, the franchisee, and your franchisor a clear understanding of the terms of your business relationship.

The franchise agreement also serves to ensure uniformity, which is beneficial not only to the franchisor but to the franchisee as well. If, for example, a customer has an unsatisfactory experience at another unit within your franchise, he will be unlikely to want to do business with your unit. Therefore, the franchisee is under obligation to maintain uniformity, and the franchise agreement will establish parameters for that uniformity.

These parameters include what products you'll use or sell at your franchise and the quality of services that must be provided by your employees.

The franchise agreement also details what actions will be taken should you breach these parameters. It explains, for example, what notices the company must give you and how much time you have to respond once notice is given.

What Should be Included in a Franchise Agreement?
First and foremost the franchise agreement should state that you are part of the franchise and that you have a fixed fee (your franchise fee) to pay in compensation for this privilege.

The franchisor has the right to approve or disapprove of sites for your location, but at the same time they will be obligated to assist you in the selection of a site for your business.

There will be a section in the agreement that goes over the use of the franchise name. Specifically, you may not challenge the franchisor's right to use the name and will be required to inform the franchisor if you discover someone else using the name without permission.

The franchise agreement also indicates how you will be expected to maintain the aforementioned uniformity.

Other Provisions You May See
The agreement will state the manner in which you must display signage at your locations. There may be certain requirements and/or restrictions on the use of a sign with the franchise name.

Often a section is included detailing what training and assistance will be provided by the franchisor. This section would go over the franchisor's responsibility to help a new franchisee get his unit going.

A franchise agreement may contain a section on advertising. Some companies use a national advertising fund to which you will have to contribute but will also benefit from during a national ad campaign. Additionally, many franchisors want to retain the right to review any and all advertising/promotional materials you may use to ensure- you guessed it - uniformity.

A section about the operating manual will require that you abide by it and adopt any revisions made to it by the franchisor. You will be under a confidentiality agreement concerning the operating manual- which remains the property of the franchisor- because the manual will divulge everything about the franchise's business plan.

It's in the best interest of the franchisor that his franchisees operate out of clean, well-maintained buildings, so there may be a section of the franchise agreement pertaining to maintenance and repairs.

The franchise agreement will have requirements concerning records and accounting. You will be required to keep certain records and to provide your franchisor with annual statements which have been audited by a certified public accountant (CPA).

Standards and quality sections - which can be very lengthy in some cases - will, again, provide for uniformity across the franchise system.

If the business opportunity you're availing yourself of requires a lot of labor or products that are produced at your location (this includes food), a franchisor will insist on quality assurance provisions. This, too, will be a lengthy section of the franchise agreement.

A section on modifications will basically state that the franchisor has the right to make system changes at anytime and require you to adopt them, but you, the franchisee, may not make any changes without approval.

The franchise agreement will specify what royalties the franchisee must pay for continuing to use the franchise's name and business plan.

The franchisor will have some amount of insurance it requires franchisees to carry, and this will be outlined in the franchise agreement.

Of course, there will be a section of the franchise agreement that states how long your franchise will last. In many cases, this term coincides with a lease, so if, for example, you have a ten-year lease on your building, you will have a ten-year franchise agreement. The agreements may or may not be renewed at the end of the agreement period at either party's discretion.

Something called a "covenant" section will state that you cannot use the knowledge and training provided to you by the franchisor to open an identical business that simply has a different name.

A section of your franchise agreement will detail what will happen at the end of the agreement including what rights each party has at that time. This section will also deal with actions that will cause you to be in default of your franchise agreement and, therefore, subject to termination by the franchisor.

The franchise agreement will state that you are required to obtain all permits, licenses, etc. necessary to conduct business in your area and that you must be in compliance with all local, state and federal laws. This section will also state that debts you incur in the course of doing business are your responsibility and not the responsibility of the franchisor.

A "nonwaiver provision" will explain that all provisions of the franchise agreement are enforceable at any time. Although a franchisor might not enforce a certain provision at a given time, they still reserve the right to enforce that provision at a later time. The same rule will apply to fees owed by the franchisee. If the franchisor does not accept payment from you for any reason, they will still have the right to collect on that debt at a later time.

Sometimes an arbitration clause will be included, although these clauses are disallowed in some states. If your franchise agreement does have an arbitration clause, it may require you to submit to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute.

Finally, the franchise agreement will designate you and your successors as the franchisee for that agreement and state that you are aware of the assumption of risk. The success of your business will not be guaranteed by the franchisor.

One of my favorite things about being an internet entrepreneur is that I can literally wake up in the morning with an idea for a new product and have it become a reality by the afternoon. Or I can find new ways to promote an existing product. Or I can join a new affiliate program. Every time I repeat this rocess, I create a new stream of income to add to my existing revenue base.

The reality is that prosperity and security do not just come from following one area of professional expertise but from using all of our gifts and talents fully. The whole idea of multiple income streams is a reflection of the fact that people who have any level of self-awareness realize that they have multiple talents.

If you have multiple streams of income, the loss of one income stream will not devastate you the way losing your only stream would. If you rely on only one source of income, and that single income source goes away you are left broke and desperate.
This is why every successful internet entrepreneur I know has multiple streams of income.

Once you become self-employed the next step is to consider all your options like, writing a book, managing property, becoming a public speaker, consulting, coaching, being a tour guide and go on and do other things too.

The biggest advantages of running a multiple revenue stream business are:

1. A continuity of cash flow that is not present in a single source business.
2. It attracts a wider variety of people and opportunities to you that wouldn not otherwise have appeared.
3. When you are living with passion everything you do is done well, this is not just good for you and your self-esteem it is terrific for your clients too.
4. Following your own calling is the most responsible thing you can do.
5. Greater peace of mind and security.

That exactly why I encourage my readers, newsletter subscribers and e-business clients to establish multiple streams of income, which is easy to do online. However, there is not one but innumerable opportunity for those involved in e-commerce to make money on the web. Some of these are listed below:

[1] Selling Info Products. Your company's core competency could be of real help to select people across the globe. You can transform this into an information product in the form of e-book or ezine, which will guide others in a step-by-step manner. Either you can charge for your information or better still, create a database using information about those who wish to download your product for free. This atabase can fetch you a decent amount.

[2] Become an affiliate marketer. This is one of my favorite ways to create multiple streams of income because there are hundreds (if not thousands) of affiliate programs that you can sign on with and begin making money immediately. As an affiliate marketer, you market a company's product or service, and when you send them a customer or make a sale, you are paid a commission.

You can sign on with as many affiliate programs as you like, and each one has the potential of creating another stream of income for you. Many internet entrepreneurs have become millionaires without ever having a product of their own. They did it by promoting affiliate programs.

[3] Selling services. The best part of Internet is the ability to reach out to millions across the world. If you are a service provider, it could be possible for you to provide this service to someone in the different time zone. For instance, a copywriting studio or a designing studio can work online. There are various sites, which offer such opportunities.

[4] Market your services online. Are you a computer programmer, a writer or editor, or a graphic artist or website designer? If so, you can market your services to customers around the world, and it does not cost you a dime.

These are just a few ways to create multiple streams of income.
There are hundreds of other ways to make money online. No matter which ones you pursue, just remember, the more streams of income you have, the bigger your money lake becomes.
