What Europe’s Mess Foretells For The NBA: Economic Crisis

The NBA owns the New Orleans Hornets. Chris Paul is the perennial All-Star guard who has been the face of that franchise for the last six years. He was going to be an unrestricted free agent next summer and wanted to play somewhere else, preferably for the Los Angeles Lakers so that he too could experience the pinnacle of the profession: a championship ring.

The problem is that when Paul leaves, the Hornets will have no stinger left. They team has little market value and little incentive for private investors to buy it. So if the Hornets are to survive over the long haul, other teams in the league would have to decide whether to subsidize it.

Letting the Hornets die creates a negative stigma on the entire league. Since revenues are increasing in the current environment, paying into the common till albeit at some sacrifice among teams is an acceptable choice – for the moment. That is to say there is still a significant “investor confidence” to continue to infuse capital into the market.

But what if NBA investor confidence stalls? I see interesting parallels between the economic stresses of an NBA union and the economic stresses of the European Union. They both have a collection of sovereign entities, be it a country within Europe or a team within the NBA. And they both face a common economic problem. Some teams/countries do better than others, and saliently, the bigger group came to the common understanding that it is in the best interests of all for the rich to subsidize the poor.

The grand European experiment was to share a common currency, thereby increasing collective leverage in exports and increase trade advantages over non-Euro economies. But they did not require a common fiscal policy. Some were less fiscally responsible than others. Germany is one of the heavyweights and no longer appears to have confidence in the common market currency. Germany’s chancellorAngela Merkel recently reaffirmed that she has no faith that common eurozone bonds are worth the investment.

Merkel’s pronouncement came despite the fact that two of the euro’s largest economies, Italy and Spain, have heavily invested in those bonds and may even depend on them as a solution to their respective growing debt crisis. This also occurs at a time when another one of the major euro players – France – anticipates a downgrade in its highly-valued Triple A rating from Standard & Poor’s. If that occurs, France will have a higher cost of borrowing money since it will be considered a higher risk in the market. And that will make Germany even less likely to want to bail them out. In fact, Germany has already capped the amount of Europe’s permanent bailout fund ($652 billion).

In other words, at some point, the richer countries lose faith in the ability of lesser countries have the wherewithal to right their own fiscal ship. Consequently the well managed countries refuse to continue to subsidize and reward the poorly managed. I fear the same fate is brewing in the NBA.

The Hornets were inhaled by the league because of financial failures and a lack of private buyers. Typically, the economic solution to financial failures of the weak is to either consolidate or cut. If the NBA has fewer teams, there will be more competition among them to buy the services over the finite group of players. And then we are back to players re-negotiating their value and revenue sharing. The scarcity of the resource typically increases the demand, and a higher cost to the teams. I envision richer more well managed teams voting to cap the amount of any weak sister bailout.

Another reason for my trepidation is the fallout from the league’s block of the Paul-Laker deal. The NBA’s recently inked collective bargaining agreement is more fragile as a result. The league’s blocking of that deal picks at the scab of free movement desired by players. And the blockage pits rich teams like the Lakers against the poor teams. The Lakers say: “For 40 years we have been as well-managed as Germany, and we do not want reward a poorly-managed Hornet team by blocking our free market means of negotiating our assets.”

The NBA approval of Paul to the LA Clippers is salt in the Lakers’ wounds, a team that competes in the same city for local financial support. Small market teams, like Cleveland and its volatile owner Dan Gilbert prefer to prioritize retaining good players in small markets even if it means curtailing free market actions of teams. If the NBA becomes more aggressive in blocking free market activity of teams and the reason is to help badly managed or poorly marketed teams, there is the greater chance of parity, but also mediocrity, and a reshaping of the highly rated traditional rivalries (e.g. Lakers-Celtics).

To the NBA’s credit, there was enough forethought of this very issue to recently, and quietly, create a venture capital fund. They realize the importance of expanding the pool of investors beyond current owners. And private equity in this form has often provided cash from passive investors who have no ambition or expertise in running the business of professional basketball. Greater amounts of new capital are then available to new or existing franchises.

Typically venture capital funds have a general partner with a high level of expertise, who then gains the confidence of thousands of passive limited partners. Perhaps the general partners add expertise to basketball operations of NBA teams. If better operations generate greater per-team revenue, it may be easier for the teams and the players to share the revenue. Perhaps it will allow poor managers to be replaced with better managers – managers who are enticed to join the team through the new cash infusion. Perhaps the location was the problem and new investors help transition to a new venue or newer facilities with state-of-the-art revenue generators and high level technology.

But the venture capital program is in the future. The fiscal troubles are here and now, with 22 of the 30 teams claiming they were losing money pre-lockout. While there are no perfect analogies, the fundamental dynamics of eurozone are replicated in the NBA dollar zone. They are both financial markets. And the collective will of the wealthy to bail out the turnovers of the poor do more to determine the fate of the whole than any double dribble on the court.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 5, 2011) — When an athlete consistently does well, sports commentators may describe them as being "hot" or "on fire." Scientists have debunked these streaks as being in the eye of the beholder, but a new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers supports the "hot hand" phenomenon: that a streak of positive outcomes is likely to continue.

Published online in the journal PLoS ONE, the study analyzed five years of NBA free throws that support the "hot hand" phenomenon. Gur Yaari, postdoctoral associate in the Department of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine, and colleague Shmuel Eisenmann, investigated the common belief among basketball players and fans that players' probabilities of hitting a shot are greater following a hit than following a miss on the previous shot. Past studies found that the data does not support this phenomenon and concluded that human subjects misperceive random sequences and tend to attribute non-random patterns to completely random data.

Yaari and Eisenmann used a large data set of more than 300,000 free throws to show strong support for the "hot hand" phenomenon at the individual level. They analyzed all free throws taken during five regular seasons NBA seasons from 2005 to 2010. They found that there was a significant increase in players' probabilities of hitting the second shot in a two-shot series compared to the first one. They also found that in a set of two consecutive shots, the probability of hitting the second shot is greater following a hit than following a miss on the previous one.

According to Yaari, the presence of the "hot hand" phenomenon in basketball data is due to better and worse periods of the players. These periods are possibly determined by other factors rather than a causal connection between the result of the previous shot and the result of the current one. Yaari said that since the number of free throws taken by one player in one game is low, in order to decide between these two options, further research from other setups is needed.

"Our results set the stage for further physiological and psychological investigations of the origin of this phenomenon," said Yaari. "While the example we studied came from the sporting world, the implications are much more far reaching."

In the United States today, there is one group of people that is actually living the American Dream. The ultra-wealthy have seen their incomes absolutely explode over the past three decades. When you allow a handful of giant entities to run everything, it is going to inevitably create a situation where there are a small number of very big winners and a massive amount of losers. In America today, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

Yes, there will always be poor people. Yes, those that work really hard and produce something of great value for society should be greatly rewarded. The way that our system should work is that it should empower individuals and small businesses to come up with new ideas, start companies, create jobs and produce massive amounts of new wealth. But instead, the number of small businesses in America is rapidly declining. The giant banks and the giant corporations that run everything are constantly running around stomping all of the "little guys" out of existence. This has created an environment where the rich are constantly getting richer and the poor are constantly getting poorer.

Just take a look at banking. The "too big to fail" banks just keep getting bigger and bigger. Back in 2002, the top 10 U.S. banks controlled 55 percent of all U.S. banking assets. Today, the top 10 U.S. banks control 77 percent of all U.S. banking assets.

If you can believe it, the "big six" U.S. banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo) now control assets equivalent to approximately 60 percent of America's gross national product.

But this isn't just the case in the financial world. The truth is that wherever you look big corporations are getting bigger. This has caused the USA economy to become very highly centralized, and these monolithic entities are basically gigantic magnets that suck up as much wealth and power as they can.

Meanwhile, life is getting really tough for the "average joe" on the street.

The following are 29 amazing stats that prove that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer in America....

#1 In the United States today, the wealthiest one percent of all Americans have a greater net worth than the bottom 90 percent combined.

#2 According to the Economic Policy Institute, between 1979 and 2007 income growth for the top 1 percent of all U.S. income earners was an astounding 390 percent. For the bottom 90 percent, income growth was only 5 percent over that same time period.

#3 According to a joint House and Senate report entitled "Income Inequality and the Great Recession", the top 1 percent of all income earners in the United States brought in a total of 10.0 percent of all income in 1980, but by the time 2008 had rolled around that figure had skyrocketed to 21.0 percent.

#4 According to the Congressional Budget Office, the top 1 percent is the only group that saw its share of the USA national income increase between 1979 and 2007.

#5 The wealthiest 1 percent of all Americans now own more than a third of all the wealth in the United States.

#6 More than 50 percent of all stocks and bonds are owned by just 1 percent of the population.

#7 The poorest 50 percent of all Americans collectively own just 2.5% of all the wealth in the United States.

Unless (?) something changes, the income inequality that we are seeing all over the world is just going to get worse and worse and worse.

"Corporations not only completely dominate the U.S. economy, they also completely dominate the global economy as well. A newly released University of Zurich study examined more than 43,000 major multinational corporations. The study discovered a vast web of interlocking ownerships that is controlled by a "core" of 1,318 giant corporations.

But that "core" itself is controlled by a "super-entity" of 147 monolithic corporations that are very, very tightly knit. As a recent article in NewScientist noted, these 147 corporations control approximately 40 percent of all the wealth in the entire network"

These ultra-powerful corporations make a very limited number of people very, very wealthy.

But for many not connected to "the system" are finding it increasingly psychologically difficult to maintain.

Once upon a time, the United States had a thriving middle class unlike anything the world had ever seen.

But now millions of families are scratching and clawing in a desperate attempt to stay afloat.

Just check out what happened in south Florida on Wednesday. Thousands were lined up for a chance at free food. In fact, people were lining up as early as last Friday to get a voucher for five bags of groceries....

By mid-morning, thousands waited in a line which wrapped around the block outside the voucher distribution location. Concerned about safety, the City of Miami Police Department was in attendance to keep order and look after the sick and elderly.

Those who received a voucher Wednesday will return on December 14th and exchange it for bags of food.

Each voucher can be redeemed for five bags of groceries worth $120.

Can you believe that?

Can you believe that there are American families that would stay in line for five days just to get some bags of free groceries?

Sadly, we are starting to see scenes like this all over the nation.

For example, approximately 10,000 people lined up for free turkey dinners in the Los Angeles area in late November.

Public Hands

The financial crises of the recent past are rooted in the monetary system as it stands today. This system creates excessive credit which inevitably feeds speculative bubbles, asset and consumer price inflation, and results in over-indebtedness. In order to work properly, the economy needs to rely on a stable and just monetary system.

What can be established:

1. the full re-establishment of the public prerogative of creating money
2. an end to the creation of money by means of commercial bank credit
3. spending new money into circulation debt-free through public expenditure.

What makes the money go round?

Everybody uses money as though it were self-evident. But the actual functioning of the monetary system remains just as nebulous as its characterisation as ‘fractional reserve system’ or ‘multiple credit creation’. This works to the benefit of the banks. They have in effect usurped the prerogative to create money by crediting 80-95 % of the means of payment into circulation in the form of demand deposits on current accounts.

An increasing part of the money supply has of late fueled mere financial transactions which had no benefit for the real economy, but have caused much real damage to it. The barely restrained creation of credit drives business cycles and the stocks and securities markets into irrational exuberance - wildly overshooting in boom periods, while resulting in over-indebtedness and severe undersupply of money in ensuing crises. If banks themselves go bust, their customers’ deposits and savings are at risk. If the state then intervenes to bail out the banks and vouch for deposits, governments in effect privatize banking profits, while passing the losses on to the public.

Banks act as individual companies. They are duty bound neither to macro-economic goals nor to the common interest. Leaving to them the weighty prerogative of creating the official means of payment is untenable. Money and the monetary order represent concerns of constitutional importance.

Nationalization of money,not

banking

All money should exclusively be created by an independent public authority. In the European Monetary Union this role falls to the European Central Bank and its national member bodies. They ought to be seen as the fourth power in the state: the monetary power, to complement the legislative, executive and judicial powers. As with the latter, the monetary power must be independent and answerable only to the law - independent from governments’ and parliaments’ appetite for money as well as from self-serving interests of the financial sector and other industries. In such a monetary regime, local complementary currencies and co-operative clearing systems can co-exist.

The monetary reform envisaged here is simple: Bank-money on account (today’s demand deposits) would be declared to be legal tender just like coins and banknotes. The system of public central banks - the monetary power - would exclusively be authorized to create these official means of payment and regulate the quantity thereof. Money on account would thus be nationalized in the same way as banknotes were nationalized over a hundred years ago. At that time, privately issued banknotes were phased out in favor of public banknotes issued by the central bank. Today the crux of the matter is to replace the debt-laden, unstable and unsafe bank-created demand deposits by a public money base which is free of debt and interest. Today’s partially nationalized money base (5-15% coins and banknotes) would fully be nationalized, not however the banks.

Government and parliament would have no say in the central bank’s independent decisions on how much money it deems necessary. The discretionary additions to the money supply would be transferred free of interest from the central bank to the government that spends it into circulation under normal budgetary procedures. In recent years this has involved 200-350 billion euros p.a. within the European Monetary Union. This represented an overshooting supply, but even less money still represents very much money foregone to the public purse.

Banks and financial markets should be able to freely pursue all but one of their current activities: that of creating money by crediting it out of thin air into customers’ current accounts. Banks would have to operate purely within the means which they have obtained as earnings or taken up at the money market or from their customers. Banks would hold that money in cash or non-cash in their account with the central bank.

Putting an end to the banks’ ability to create demand deposits can be achieved in a technically rather simple and smooth way: Customers’ current accounts would be taken off the banks’ balance sheet and run separately in their own right.

Making money creation fit the public

interest

Such a reform would bring about five big advantages. First, money on account could no longer disappear and would thus be safe. If banks failed there would be no reason for a run on those banks, and cashless money transfer would not be in jeopardy. Governments and the public would thus no longer be at the mercy of the banks’ survival as is the case today.

Second, bounds would be set on the banks’ procyclical over- and undershooting of the money supply. Before running into a stage of ‘irrational exuberance’ markets would run short of fuel in the form of all too cheaply available credit. Money flows would be steadier, and real and financial business cycles more moderate.

Third, the central bank would have full control of the quantity of money and would thus be able to prevent inflation by managing the money supply in accordance with real economic potentials - unlike today’s credit creation by the banks which is prone to asset and consumer price inflation or to overt demonetization in times of economic stress.

Fourth, seigniorage would fully benefit the public purse and no longer be an undeserved banking extra profit. A non inflation-accelerating growth rate of the money supply is in line with the expectable growth rate of the real economy. By today’s standards 1-2 per cent of GDP growth in the European Monetary Union (about 9.100 billion euros in 2008) involves an additional money supply, and thus seigniorage, of about 90-180 billion euros. This amounts to about 2-4 per cent of the total budget of EMU member states.

Fifth, and of particular importance today, governments would have the one-time chance of reducing public debt by half in a no-noise no-pain transition to the new system. The reason is that the reform substitutes central bank money on current accounts for banks’ demand deposits. Most of the replacement would happen within a time span of about three to five years as old bank credits are paid back and replaced by new loans fully made out in central bank money. The necessary means for this one-time substitution can originally also be brought into circulation by way of transfer from central bank to government. Governments in turn can use the corresponding amounts of one-off transition seigniorage to redeem public debt. Demand deposits within the EMU amounted to 3.200 billion euros in 2008, in fact half of total public debt at about 6.000 billion euros.

Monetary business-as-usual is no longer acceptable. Ever more regulation and bureaucracy is not desirable either. What we now need is: replacement of bank-created demand deposits by central bank money, in finally establishing public central banks as the independent fourth power, the monetary power.

The "Beijing News" referenced by BLOOMBERG.com (10/26/11) resonates peculiarly with my BASN analysis (see above) of only 730 days ago....

On Oct. 24, Guan Weijia, vice-director of the basketball department atTitan Sports, China’s leading sports newspaper, wrote a column about the player lockout in the Beijing News titled, “Everybody is a demon.”

In it, he said thatNBA Commissioner David Stern was “the demon of all demons and he is Satan who is the King of demons in this labor dispute.”

Guan was not much kinder to Billy Hunter, the executive director of the NBA Player’s Union, and his role in the fruitless negotiations:

He is the spokesman of the employees, but he can't work out a shrewd strategy … [he] has already prepared for surrender and the purpose of his of existence is to be played and "slaughtered" by Stern.

The District's deficit was cut in half in 2010 due to tax increases, but Mayor Vincent Gray's budget plan calls for $127.2 million in tax and fee increases within income, parking, off-premise alcohol, and franchise taxes – in addition to public transportation fare increases, while cutting economic development, public safety, public education, and social services.

Still, Gray's plan will leave the Washington Metro Area in the red. He says the budget would inflict some pain: “[It’s] a tough budget, I'm not going to represent it as anything else,” he admits. Yet little more than a week after his budget plan was announced, he was arrested for protesting that Congress (which oversees the DC budget and laws) was taking away autonomy granted to the city for the last several years, meaning it will be banned from spending city money on things such as HIV prevention.

To start at the beginning, the human body (indeed, every living thing presently known) functions on an electro-chemical energy system. This means that, in addition to the chemical vascular/muscular system, you also have an electrically operated nervous system.

This electrical system is controlled by chemicals called neurotransmitters. You already know that electroencephalograms (E.E.G.) are used to determine if a brain is functioning properly. You also know that these electrical measurements of the brains activity are taken remotely, from or near the skin, not directly from the brain itself. In other words, doctors are reading the electromagnetic field the brain puts out using man-made electrical and electronic instruments even though these tools are crude and relatively ineffective compared to the human protoplasmic and electro-chemical body.

This electro-magnetic field is exactly akin to the electromagnetic field around a high voltage power line. No, its not 40,000 plus volts, but it is real and is measured through the electromagnetic aura your body emits.

Even though your electrical output is much lower than the local nuke, the electromagnetic aura is unusually large for such small electrical pulses. This is caused by resistance in the transmission lines. The more resistance in the line, the more intense the electrical aura. And, the slower the signal travels.

Superconductors will transmit electricity at the speed of light (almost) with virtually none of the energy drain that line resistance translates to the electric aura. The more conductive the electrical line, the less power loss, the faster electricity is transmitted, and the smaller the electromagnetic field aura.

The human body, however in most cases does not transmit electrical signals at anywhere close to the speed of light (about 186,000 miles per second) yet the melanin molecule found within humanity can exceed the the speed of light travel time and be absorbed in full physicality receptivity. The largest and thickest nerve fibers conduct electricity at up to 500 feet/second while the thinnest conduct electricity at only about three feet/second.

The high resistance and special design of this bio-electro-chemical system creates a large electromagnetic field in relation to the small electrical charges used. This electromagnetic aura exists all over the body wherever nerve fibers exist.

This bio-electrical system is not exactly like a power transmission line but more like a telegraph line. The body sends short impulses through these nerve fibers. These tiny pulses of electricity, about one thousandth of a second long, occur continuously. Even at rest, your brain sends electrical pulses at least once every second to the entire body and will send (and receive) up to 60 pulses per second during activity.

Throughout your nervous system are junctions, called "Nodes of Ranvier", named after the scientist who discovered them. For the sake of brevity and future lesson use, lets call these Nodes of Ranvier "Tsubos".

Each of these Tsubos creates an even more intense aura similar to the increased electric aura around junctions on power lines. You remember these, you can hear them crackle on a humid day. In fact, some high power electrical transmission lines put out such an intense aura that you can see it on a humid night, especially in the vicinity of a junction.

In an exactly similar way you can see this aura around a person when conditions are just right. You can also measure this aura just like engineers measure the electromagnetic field of a transmission line. Electrical lines bringing power to an appliance in your home vary greatly in frequency and strength. At many junctions, the electricity is altered and "stepped" up or down, changed to 240 volts, 120 volts, or other voltages for commercial usage.

The body also sends out electrical signals of varying frequency and strength. Because the body is a biological system, the electrical signals will vary with the activity and health of the body/mind.

This bio-electrical system has some advantages over the metal electrical systems (and some disadvantages). A big advantage is that the biological system can repair itself. Another advantage is that it doesn't have to be removed to be repaired. Of course, it is slow and inefficient, putting out a lot of waste energy in the form of an electromagnetic aura, but, there's always some good with the bad.

Electricity is transmitted by electrons. ALWAYS! No matter what the system, electricity is transmitted by electrons. Electrons come in two flavors, left spin and right spin. This is from quantum physics but please don't take the course at your local university without a lot of preparation. The electricity you get at home is a mix of left and right spin electrons in a homogeneous mass.

The biological system is able to differentiate between the slightly different electrical aura of left and right spin electrons and preferentially uses them for specific signals. This slightly alters the character of the electromagnetic field when the current is mostly left spin as opposed to mostly right spin.

The brain handles most of the decision making for the body but not all. Somewhat akin to dinosaurs, we have a kind of brain in our back, the spinal column. Since our nervous system is so slow, we have adopted a method of handling emergencies where speed of response is essential. Many reflex actions are handled by groups of neurons in our spinal column, including walking. These neurons are located in giant Tsubos at locations in the nerves of the spine. That way, we can be moving even before we "think" about the danger we're moving from.

The brain uses special chemicals to produce electricity. We do the same thing to power our batteries for autos, radios, toys, etc. The body uses these chemicals extensively in the brain, at each of the remote-control locations of the spine, and at each Tsubo throughout the body.

These chemical substances are called neurotransmitters. There are many different kinds of neurotransmitters.
