Mickey and I went when it was at it's old location, and have not been to the new location.

I imagine it will only be better, and the old location was great! Definitely worth the drive down south!

We have been going here for years!- Really! The lady where we buy tickets to get in,( I think it is $4.00) remembers Tanner (now 21) and Quinci (now 18) in a backpack and buying marbles for a collection.

It is a great adventure!

Girl or Boy...It's All the Same!

I'll never forget my big 20 week ultrasound during my first pregnancy. Before finding out the gender I thought and would even say I want my first born to be a son. Then I found out we were having a girl. My reaction to finding out I was having a daughter and not a son probably didn't make sense. I was ecstatic - through the roof excited! Easily one of the best days of my life!

I don't know why I ever said I had a preference. Suddenly all I wanted was a little girl.

And having a girl is perfect!

And shopping for a girl has been fun. Just ask LKB.

Or wearing dresses.

That was all just a long winded introduction to my point. I have my perfect girl and now I couldn't be more excited we're having a boy! (Actually, based on experience, I would probably be just as excited no matter what the gender happened to be.)

I've been getting super great deals planning ahead for this little guy. The deals online are incredible and the close couldn't be cuter!

One of the ~~too many~~ blogs I ~~stalk~~ follow posted, i don't know why everybody says that little girls are the most fun to shop for. The blogger linked to so many adorable little man clothing and items that ~~will drain my bank account~~ our son must have.

These little manly items are so cute I can't stand it.

Seriously, check out the link above to the blog if you're ever going to have a baby boy, a grandson, or have a friend who will have a boy, or a neighbor that will have a boy, or have an unfortunate husband that wears 0 - 3 month clothing and likes sock monkeys.

In short, all genders are perfect. Deep... I know.

Strawberry Fields Forever!

It's time! The strawberries are ready for picking!

Hana and I had a fun morning this week picking LOTS of berries.

We went to some fields just south of our house.

The sun was warm, nice breeze, the air smelled like berries... it felt good.

We ended up with a lot!!! Now the fun begins- what to do with them all.

I made some into sauce, for peanut butter and jelly sundaes!

I strained the berry mixture after mixing it with sugar, pureeing them and let them simmer on the stove awhile.

Peanut Butter Sundaes

1 2/3 C. half and half
1/2 C. light brown sugar
1 TBL. light corn syrup
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 C. peanut butter (creamy)

Vanilla Ice Cream and strawberry sauce

Bring the 1/2 and 1/2. brown sugar, corn syrup and salt to a boil over moderate high heat.
Whisk until smooth.
Remove from heat and whisk in peanut butter until smooth.
Transfer to a glass jar and cool slightly.
Serve over vanilla ice cream with your homemade strawberry sauce.

Hana made strawberry cupcakes, with strawberry cream cheese frosting!!!! WOW!!!!

Delicious!!

Strawberry Cupcake Recipe

makes 12 cupcakes
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped strawberries
1-2 tablespoons milk, if needed (I did not need/use this)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Beat butter and sugar together in the bowl of an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix until combined. Add flour, baking powder and salt with the mixer on low speed, then gradually increase speed. Add in chopped strawberries and beat on medium speed until the strawberries break down – about 1-2 minutes. At this point, the strawberries most likely have enough liquid that you don’t need to add any milk to the batter. If you batter seems dry and is not like typical cake batter (see 1st picture above), then add milk 1-2 tablespoons at a time, beating until incorporated.
Pour into cupcake liners, filling 2/3 of the way full, and bake for 20-25 minutes or until cake is set. Let cool, then frost.
We used the fresh berries in it.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

Ingredients

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners' sugar. Store in the refrigerator after use.

Hana added some of the fresh fruit- pureed in it!

In case you have a few berries left, here is another recipe that I want to make this weekend.

Strawberry and Whipped Cream Pie (makes one 10-inch pie)

Crust:

1-1/3 cups graham cracker crumbs

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup flour

6 Tablespoons melted butter

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix everything together by hand, and press firmly into a 10-inch springform pan. The crust should also go up the sides of the pan about three inches. Bake in the oven for about 12 minutes, until it has firmed up a bit. Let it cool while you prepare the filling.

Filling:

5 cups strawberries, washed and stems removed.

1/4 cup sugar

1 Tablespoon gelatin powder, soaked in 1/4 cup cold water

Roughly chop one cup of the strawberries and place in a small saucepan with the sugar. Cook until reduced to a puree. Remove from the heat, then stir in the soaked gelatin. Mix with the remaining strawberries, then immediately pour into the cooled crust. Spread the out so the top is level, then prepare the whipped cream topping.

Topping:

1-1/2 cups heavy cream

1 Tablespoon powdered sugar

1 teaspoon gelatin powder

2 tablespoons milk

Whip the cream and sugar to stiff peaks. Soak the gelatin in the milk for two minutes, then heat gently until dissolved. Gradually fold the whipped cream into the gelatin, then spread on top of the strawberries. Chill for several hours before removing from the pan and slicing.

maybe it can save you time.

Here is what it is: First of all they
say you have to be invited, really
it is just signing up.
Then you create boards, like- crafts,
home, music, fashion, music etc.
You then "pin" things you see on
the internet and you share them
with people that "follow" you.

This is an example of something
I pinned- an idea for a craft-
so
it's on my crafty-ness board.

Where it comes in handy is when my son says-"hey I saw this really cool shirt"- I can look on his "fashion" board and go to the website. Or my daughter can have something on youtube she wants me to watch, so I can just go to her music board.
I have tons of folders on my desktop, and bookmarks a mile long on my computer. This is another way to save ideas and share them. Oh.... and you can have a recipe board too----share recipes--- really cool!

If you are celebrating any kind of "Big Deal," a very special place to dine is, La Belle Vie.
I think this is about the 3rd anniversary we have spent there- and again, it was wonderful!

To start with we each had a drink in the bar:

I had a Passion fruit, ginger froth martini that was delicious!

I wish I had taken more pictures of everything, but I didn't want to be obnoxious-snapping away. And it was nice just enjoying the evening.

We had the 8 course tasting menu- YES- 8 courses!!!!!! Oh my- they were each 3 or 4 bites of incredible flavors! So, pretty small portions.

AB likes really good food, but is not the most adventurous eater. I thank him for going all the way with this one. We had, raw ahi tuna, rabbit, morels, foi gras, lamb and a cheese course- all which he says he doesn't eat, and he ate and LOVED. Other than the cheese plate. So yay!!!!

Our edible anniversary dessert. Yum!

Heavenly Rhubarb Martini

AB just pulled rhubarb from from the garden- one of the first signs of spring ...& I saw a monarch today. I'm not sure if they are suppose to be around now.

It is so nice to have rhubarb right outside in the garden, since it is the first sign of things coming back to life after a long, cold winter.

So what to do with it!? Last year I tried making rhubarb vodka. AB opened the corked bottle this winter and it exploded all over the walls and ceiling- I think it fermented a little too much.

So I adapted a martini recipe today, here's how it goes:

Wash and cut about 3 cups of rhurbarb.

Cut into small pieces and put in a saucepan with about 1 cup of sugar.

Juice from 1 orange.

Boil for about 5 minutes, until the rhubarb is soft.

Put in a strainer over a bowl. The syrup does not have to be thick, just flavorful.

Let it set to cool.

You are then ready to make the martini's.

Heavenly Rhubarb Martini

Put in a shaker, filled with ice

2 shots vodka (I used ruby red- that's what I had)

1 shot St. Germaine Elderflower Liquor

1 shot heavy cream

2 shots rhubarb syrup (homemade)

shake, shake, shake

strain into martini glasses

yum!

Perfect to sip while grilling steaks!

or anytime!

What I want to be when I Grow Up

I am NOT a writer, so this is very unusual for me to want to write something.
As I was driving home from staying over at my son's house, watching his girls for the evening, while they were at a wedding. I turned on MPR- the person being interviewed was a lady- I think her name was Sylvia Bornstein- I'm not sure- She is a Jewish Buddhist. She is a Psycho-therapist, book author, speaker and in her opinion, her greatest accomplishment is being a mom. One of the top things on her list of important things in her life is being a wife and a mom, who has raised" nice" kids. The list then goes on to Dr. speaker,etc. In this day, most of the time, mom isn't a "good enough" title. You also need a job title in front of it. I have always been happy being a mom- I like to try and be a good one. I try and take it seriously and I think I have really "nice" kids. Sometimes I feel like I should be doing other things. Even though I am never not doing something

Then I saw this quote from Erma Bombeck:
"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me."

Wow- panic!!! I don't know if I am doing that at all! I better get a job doing art somewhere!!!
After walking with my friend Lynn and telling her about this quote- she said " I use things you have made me all the time, and I love them." I love giving my art- I feel like it is a "gift" to me from God, so I like giving it as a gift. Sometimes it seems "worth" more if you get dollars for it.
I look at my kids- which ties this all back to being a mom- and ALL of them are creative- I love that! Whether It's bring used as a business or just being them.
I still have a lot of talent to give or use- I haven't used everything yet. It's comforting to know sometimes it's being used without really knowing it.

Back to the beginning of this-

Top of my list: I love being a mom and it can be who you are.

Confessions of a Reluctant Grandmother-

I've been wanting to write this for a while, and I guess with Mother's Day this weekend, it's a good time.
Maybe other grandmothers have felt this way... I don't know. I hope I'm not the only one.
What you hear is- being a grandmother is the BEST thing! You can watch them and spend time with them and then send them home. All that is true.

When I first found out I was going to be a grandmother I was happy....... kind of. To be honest, to my self, it meant getting older. Grandmother's are old! I'm not old. And I still have kids at home--- I haven't had that l-o-n-g-ing, to have young children back in my life. What I heard from friends was "Congratulations", "how wonderful." Then I met a girlfriend for lunch- and she said."OH NO! If you are going to be a grandmother than that means I'm getting older too." Wow, I could relate to that.

Babies are born and it is WONDERFUL, I love them. But being reluctant also, was the feeling of caring so much . Finally my own kids are getting older, where you still care, but you can let go a little. With new little ones, you love so much, that you can't help but be wrapped up in them.
Do I sound like an awful person?

....now, I can say, it is wonderful- and you know what? I don't feel older- I'm just much more blessed. My life is more full..... there's room for more. (4 granddaughters and 1 more baby coming). You get to know these tiny, little cool people and love explodes!!!!

My goal is to keep my life interesting. So, I may not be available to spend time with them every time they need me. I'm going to be out "doing things!" I want them to find me to be such an interesting person, that they "want" to spend time with me. I want to be a "cool" Oma.
Hey, by the way- you get to pick your own name, unless they pick it for you. I'm Oma- I picked it. There is nothing better than having them come running up to your door, yelling- "Oma, Oma, Oma"..... and jump in your arms. So cool! It is really all good.

I met AB at his office today and we walked a couple blocks to Patisserie 46. As we got near dogs were covering the sidewalk... to my delight!

They were just hanging out with their dog walker. So cool.....

...happy as can be,

...totally enjoying themselves.

When you walk in, there is just good food and good aroma everywhere. You order at the counter:
look at this counter!!!!!

Each day they make 1 kind of; sandwich, quiche, soup,
tarte flambe (paper thin pizza) tartine (I'm not sure what that is) and that's it. It may sound limiting-
it's not. What they make is super good, so why make more. When it's gone, it's gone.
They also have many pastries and bread to choose from.

We shared a paper thin pizza with bacon and onion. Excellent! And we each had a cup of chilled, fresh pea soup! Sooooo goood!

It is a very friendly, comfortable place. If it stays warm enough outside, they will also have outdoor seating.

To me it feels like a little European Cafe. Great lunch! (did I say that already/)

As soon as I got in my car I called Mickey and said "pick a day, we have to go there next week!"
AB- don't ever go to Subway when you have this just down the street!

Oh I almost forgot, we did bring a couple little goodies home-

Artichoke Season

Have you tried them? This time of the year artichokes are the biggest, the freshest and the best price.

I love them! If you haven't tried them before, here is an easy way to start.

Rinse the artichoke off and trim the stem flush with the bottom.

Put them in a pot of boiling water. I added about 1 Tbl. of olive oil and 2 squeezes of lemon.

Boil lightly for about 35- 40 min. until the leaves wiggle a little when you pull on them.

Drain and put in individual bowls with a little melted butter for dipping.

They are ready to eat. You kind of scrape the leaves on the meaty end with your teeth.

After enjoying the leaves you'll get down to the choke. I don't know how anyone ventured to start eating these in the first place- this does not look appetizing.

Take your spoon and scrape the bristly part off.

You will be left with the heart, which is delicious. It tastes different than the leaves, a little nutty.

Dip it in butter....yum!!!!!

Be sure and have a bowl for the discarded leaves.

There are many recipes for artichokes. This will get you started- and what a great way to get young kids to eat vegetables. It's an activity meal!!!

seeing that I haven't introduced our little spot on the worldwide web to my new best friend!

Let me introduce you...Philadelphia Cooking Creme.

BFF's!

This ~~best friend~~ stuff has rocked my ~~world~~ meals.

It's a really thick sauce that you add to anything to make it taste good.

Anything.

Tonight, for example, I cooked chicken and mixed vegetables (seperately).

Once the chicken and veggies were cooked I combined them.

Then I added the Italian Cheese and Herb Cooking Creme along with a can of spicy Rotel tomatoes.

(Did I tell you she comes in different flavors? LOVE!)

Mixed it all together and simmered while the rice cooked.

Wa la...Creamy, spicy chicken and veggies over rice.

Last week I used the Original Cooking Creme and added veggies, chicken and tomatoes and tossed it with pasta noodles. Delish.

I'm Back--

I've actually been back for a few days, but this has been a hard re-entry into "life as usual." For a couple reasons, we came back to a disaster of a house. Not because of our wonderful house sitter, he did a great job, but our house is in shambles because of repairs that are way too complicated to get into.

Also, we had a great time. We played hard, walked a lot, laughed a lot, ate a lot-----

What we didn't do, is spend a lot of time on the internet or in front of the television ----- not at all!

And it was VERY nice!

Which brings me back to the re-entry into everyday life. I have been even a little hesitant to get back at blogging. The internet takes a BIG chunk out of LIFE.

What I did do is read a GREAT book- and I want to tell you about it, in case you have not read it yet.

It is an amazing story, a memoir. I usually don't read memoirs.... I'm not sure why, they have always sounded kind of boring. I heard Kerri Miller interviewing the author Laura Hillenbrand on MPR.
She told how she interviewed Louis Zamperini long distance by phone to write the book. It caught my attention and sounded good- once you get past the first 20-30 pages, you CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!!
It's a true story, Louie is 97 now- it is amazing. It's really a book everyone should read-
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, buy it, borrow it- just read it.

Chicken Enchiladas!

I just made up a recipe and I think it's my favorite meal EVER - chicken enchiladas. This kind of thing just doesn't happen to me...
If you want to make a yummy dinner on the fast, here is how I made it!

**I didn't measure things because I wasn't planning on repeating it, so feel free to vary this recipe however you'd like.**

I used the following ingredients:

2 cooked chicken breasts (Chopped into small pieces)
Salsa (16 ounces at least)
Cream Cheese (I used 1/2 of a block)
Corn (I'd estimate about 1 cup)
1 small can diced green chiles
1 15 ounce can of pinto beans (drained and rinsed)
2 cups of shredded cheese (I used 4 "Cheese Mexican Blend")
8 flour tortillas

This is how I prepared them:

Heated cream cheese, corn and 1/2 of the salsa and 1/2 of the shredded cheese on medium low until the cream cheese and shredded cheese is melted and blended together.
Added the green chiles, pinto beans and chicken breast to the mixture and stirred together over medium low heat.
Then I greased a 9x13 pan and spread a small amount of salsa evenly on the pan.
Next I just filled tortillas, (each with a big scoop of the mixture) rolled them and placed them in the pan with the seam side down.
Top the enchiladas with the rest of the salsa and the remaining cheese.

Throw it in a 350 degree oven for 25-35 minutes. Let cool a few minutes and enjoy...mmmmmmmmmm.

Ummm...Ben is going to be home in 15 minutes but I couldn't wait and just had 2.

Hi there!

I was just thinking I'd blog about the weekend and realized I literally don't know what I did all weekend. Do you ever have that kind of weekend? One that seemed fun and busy, but you didn't do anything.

Today, for example, I feel like we had a fun Sunday. Um, our main event was going grocery shopping at Byerly's because of their big "Buy One Get One" sale. (Seriously, if it was BOGO it is now in our pantry.) Then we came home and cleaned our fridge, freezer and pantry.

I'm really not boring, but this first trimester is making me ~~a total snooze fest~~ simple.

If Piper could write she'd have a pretty crazy Friday to blog about. As crazy fun as a 2 year old could have...Ben, Piper and I went to Red Robin for dinner. She loved her chicken fingers and Shirley Temple, as well as the green balloon from the host stand! Then, this is where it gets cRaZy!!! We went to a 9:20PM showing of the movie Hop. She was so excited about the treats, the bunnies and being out late.

Next weekend I'm either planning a ton of unbelievably exciting things to do just to blog about them or I'll stay under the radar and have LKB take over with some New Orleans dish!

***Working 2 years in Market Research taught me that only 1.5% of women are pregnant at any given time, so I realize I should limit pregnancy talk to get a broader audience. :)

BUT - I've got baby on my brain, so bear with me! Just 7 more months and I'll appeal to more of you!***

I've known I was pregnant for the past 5.5 weeks and can't stand the thought of waiting 11 more to find out if little bugger is a boy or a girl. I'll never understand why patience is a virtue!

Seems like everything I buy has a red clearance tag.

A few weeks ago, I picked up an IntelliGender Gender Prediction Kit at Target.

It's recommended you take the test anywhere after 10 weeks. I'll be there in 6 days so I took the test today. Again, I'll never understand why patience is a virtue!

You basically pee in a cup, swirl it for 10 seconds and then WAIT for 10 long minutes.

Then you read the results.................

It's not as easy as pink = girl / blue = boy.

I have LKB to thank for my darling husband.

Last night Ben found a recipe that he had to try - Ina Garten's Lemon Bars. After our fantastic Jimmy John's dinner tonight, Ben just upped and started baking them.

He made the crust, squeezed the lemons, sifted the powered sugar - the whole 9 yards.

They turned out FANTASTIC! You should try them. The recipe is here!

Look at that man sift! He told me, "I add more powdered sugar than the Contessa".

Hi friends!

This baby is kicking my rump! I'm convinced we're either having quadruplets or a dinosaur because this pregnancy has been nothing like carrying little Piper in my womb.

Here LKB is out-of-town and I feel like I'm dropping the ball (I mean blog).
Tomorrow I'll get my creative juices flowing, or bribe Ben to do a guest post.

Relaxing, reading books on the front porch, smelling spicy familiar scents, walking around the French Quarter- pretending like we live there, seeing old friends, listening to music on the steps of Jackson Square. Tomorrow. Can't wait!

Nutella Puff Pastry Dessert

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (from a 17.3 pkg.)
1 lg. egg beaten for an egg wash)
7.oz. nutella, roughly 1/2 jar (13 oz.)
1 tbl. sugar
sea Salt to sprinkle
4 Tbl. hazelnuts, whole, toasted and chopped
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Arrange puff pastry on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Form a 10 in. square and fold up the edges, just a little. Poke the middle of dough several times with a fork.
Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar
FREEZE for 15 min.
Transfer to oven and bake until pastry is puffed and golden, about 15 min.
Meanwhile roast hazelnuts in oven and then roll on a towel to remove skins and chop roughly
really good, and most things you can just keep on hand to make whenever you want
