I have a thing for these one shoulder dresses. I know I have written about them before but I just can't seem to shake my current fascination with them. I look for them everywhere and have amassed a personal collection of about oh ....five different silhouettes in my own closet that i wear on a regular basis. There is just something so sensual about them, they are this delicious combination of the seventies mixed up with Greek goddess, mixed up with snootiness and a bit of edginess. When I saw the pictures above of Miss Katie Holmes and Gwenyth Paltrow both rocking their Lanvin versions in an on-line comparison of runway to real-way I just could not resist posting them. These to me are the classic goddess version, whereas this little pink number that is available for sale over at Shrimpton Couture is a more girlie fifties silhouette. At the moment there is also a one shoulder seventies maxi at Shrimpton too which you can see in this post or by hopping directly over to SC.

My real question is this though - both the dresses you see above are Lanvin. You would assume that they are the same design but in a different fabric, no? Notice though that each is one a different shoulder. So the question becomes? Whose wearing it backwards?

Yesterday evening saw the opening of the Prada flagship store in San Francisco, an event that socials such as Vanessa Getty (pregnant but still working her Prada), Sloan Barnett, and Tatiana Sorokko all turned out for. Most dramatic outfit of the night award goes to Sorokko, who wore a pale pistachio green embroidered cape that paid homage to the label's distinctively hued walls.

This is a fabulous vintage cape. If you ever asked yourself - where would I wear a vintage cape and what would I wear it with - here is the answer - pair it with modern basics and then be prepared to be the girl who gets photo'd who is NOT wearing the designer label whose event you are at. Ahh the beauty of being the only girl in the room who is simply herself.

The Averardo Bessi Company was founded in 1950. In 1968, the first collection was presented to the fashion world in the patterns and style of Averardo Bessi. "I started at a very early age, working in a fashion atelier. My objective was designing and creating clothing for women, as well as men" says the founder of his namesake fashion house.

A short time later; the stylist developed an idea to propose something truly special, his design for the print on the fabrics that later came to be the realization of his women's collection. Bessi’s prints are reminiscent of Emilio Pucci and he even signed his prints as well. Bessi and other Pucci impressionists are finding their own designs are finally reaching the price range and receiving the respect of their predecessor.

These are shots from the Chanel resort collection runway show that was held in South Beach a bit ago. I know they are over the top but I love them for their crazy ass seventies references.

The second is my absolute favorite but sadly I think I have too much girl bum to pull of boy bum shorts.

Vintage Halston slip dress available at Shrimpton Couture

Vogue reports that after only one year as the creative head of Halston, Marco Zanini is already being replaced. I think it is perhaps the hardest role any designer can choose to undertake - that of taking a company that is legendary in vintage circles and trying to revamp it.

Its not an easy task. The problem lies in the fact that a lot of the women who buy it already own an original or have been lusting for the original. Sure you are going to be able to capture women outside of this circle as new and uneducated consumers, but in my opinion if you do try to capture the hearts of the girls who love the original you will miss the boat every time.

For the new designer there is always going to be that fine line of trying to recapture the original look and feel and adding your own personal stamp to the line. And quite frankly, there may be a lot of designers out there but how many truly talented ones are there? Anyone looking to relaunch a defunct but legendary label has a lot of the deck already stacked up against them.

I had (and still do have) extremely high hopes for Halston. Tamara Melon is at the helm and she knows good clothes - the woman (who has long been one of my mentors whether she has realized it or not) is a Mecca of all things fabulous and I have seen her photographed in vintage Halston gowns countless times. They brought on Rachel Zoe as a creative consultant, who, whether you choose to love or hate her, is still one of the most innately stylish women and again all her roots lie in vintage.

What these two glamazons need to do is follow their instincts.

Forget what the designer brings to the table in terms of resume. Forget what bullshit he (or she) gives them about his vision. Listen to how he talks about the original. Listen to what he thinks about how a Halston gown sits and moves on a body. Listen to his answer of why a gown that is nothing more then 2 swaths of fabric has the effect it does on a girl and can still capture women’s hearts decades later.

Tamara, when you hear that answer..... if your heart stops just for a second and you are swept back to a moment when you wore your favourite vintage Halston and felt like the most beuatufl woman in the room...... hire that person.

Hire them and let them create.

Wendy B's interview with me on the weekend sparked a bit of a commotion over this lovely Paganne zip front dress. It is to be honest pretty spectacular! The fabric is a fine, Italian almost-a-knit but not quite - do you know the fabric I mean? I never know what to call that type of fabric - its a combination of silk knit or silk and wool knit but when you read wool you always think heavy fabric so I try to skit around that word unless it really is a heavy fabric.

It really was one of the best Pagannes I had ever seen. You see a lot of them in the more common, stretchy poly-knit. But to find one in this upgraded fabric is really something special. And then we found this one too in that same fabric:

Totally different look and feel but equally as spectacular. You guys are lucky my butt is just beyond the measurements of either of these dresses capacity because if they both fit they would be in my personal closet. Even with them being a titch too small they almost did not make it on the site. They are both perfect, the print is crisp and vibrant and they wear wonderfully. Paganne is quickly moving up the ranks for being a highly sought after collectible, and when you find pristine examples like these and in these types of fabrications - well you can see why.

Meet Cherie of Shrimpton Couture

I discovered the vintage delights of Shrimpton Couture through owner Cherie's blog. I have been perusing her site for months without buying anything. Hard to believe, I know, but I love every piece so much that I can't decide on just one! No wonder Shrimpton Couture was named one of the top 10 vintage clothing websites by Lulu's Vintage Blog. Now, I have extra incentive to make up my mind, because Cherie emailed to tell me that she is offering free worldwide shipping. While I had Cherie's attention, I figured I'd ask her a few questions. First, I found out that in her non-vintage-clothing life, she is a mining executive, so I asked her to find me a little diamond mine. Then I asked her about the clothes.

WendyB: How did a mining gal like yourself wind up with a vintage clothing site?
Cherie: I started out as a collector. I have always been a clothes-crazy girl and I have always been a label and quality snob and quite frankly vintage enabled me to buy the quality I wanted to wear in clothes at a price I could afford it at, early on. I also quickly learned the appeal of being the girl who "had the only one of its kind." As the years progressed I relentlessly "upgraded" my collection. I would buy better vintage and distribute the old to my girlfriends. Eventually the prices I paid for what I had got a bit out of control and so I started selling off my collection. But only to be able to buy more. It was the concept of $1 in - and about $10 out.

I made friends with a few key "pickers" (this is people in the business who source vintage - they "pick" through to find the good stuff) and made deals with them to buy the cream of the crop for a little more then what dealers or store owners would pay them - they loved me for that. I also discovered online shopping but was often disappointed with what arrived. It seemed so hit and miss. As my personal income rose so did my budget for buying vintage and I was able to start shopping current labels as well. This just made me pickier and pickier. I started buying from more established sites online and at some point a light bulb went off and I thought -- I can do this better. That's how the website was born.

WendyB: Besides the fact that I can't decide which dress I need most, what's special about Shrimpton Couture?
Cherie: I try to combine the concept of great vintage with modern shopping. When I started the site my aim was to treat it like a current boutique - a vintage Net-a-Porter. The kind of place I wanted to shop at. Everything I sell through the site is sent out clean, as close to perfect as we can make it and ready to wear. It's sent wrapped in a black box in tons of tissue and ribbon so when you open it you know it is something special. I can't tell you how many times I have received a $1000 vintage dress in the mail in a manila envelope or an old grocery store box. It freaks me out. That does not happen at Shrimpton Couture. What is the point of spending big bucks if it is not fun? I want to feel spoiled and want my clients to feel that way too.

WendyB: Is your company's name a reference to '60s model Jean Shrimpton?
Cherie: I wanted a name that would transcend vintage. I love Jean Shrimpton and loved the combination of her last name with the word "couture." An interesting aside - Jean's niece actually emailed me from England early on to say she had come across the site and that she loved it! That made my day.

WendyB: I like to ask store owners how the hell they find the great things they sell, but that question makes a lot of them bitchy and crazy. Jebus! It's not like I'm going to run out and start doing the same thing that they're doing. Don't I have enough problems? Anyway, you seem nice, so I'm going to ask you: "How the hell do you find the great things you sell?"
Cherie: First of all I have an extensive collection of my own that I have built up over the last 15 years. I currently have the entire third of my house floor filled with racks. I can go shopping in my own house! Second those buyers I mentioned -- well two of them have remained with me and they are fabulous, crazy collectors that are as bad or worse then I am and are now part of the Shrimpton team. They are picky as hell, have an incredible eye and are willing to hand me over things on a regular basis. Finally, I still do go out and actually buy vintage myself. I am lucky in that I often travel globally for my life outside of vintage so I shop all over the world for the site. There are items on the site from as far off as Russia and South Africa!

WendyB: I can't decide what I want from your store -- there's too much! Help me out by picking three pieces for me.
Cherie: My three top picks for you would be: the 1970s zip front Paganne, the black Ossie Clark and the one-shoulder 70s dress in the evening section. I also think you would look incredible in the new lace dress in the evening section and the 1940s sculptural dress in the evening section (I don't think this is your usual style but think you would look amazing in it).

Summer Love - Flapper Style

Its summer and its hot. Maybe you are jetting off to Nice to try to spot the new twins or spending the weekends at the Hamptons. Either way what do you wear when you need something easy to pack, easy to wear and something lovely and cool and still ever so pretty and fresh? Perhaps this stunning flapper dress - its hand screened, watercolor rose design has just the exact right touch of sheer and the cut allows the dress to flow around the body. Our mannequin is about a size 4 and the dress is not pinned on her at all - even though technically the measurements of the dress are more along a 8 or 10. There is something magical about the way a 20s dress falls on the body. Yes we know that typically when one thinks the twenties we automatically picture evening and beads and long cigarette holders. But to find a day dress of this caliber form that era, of this beauty....well you might just find your summer love in it, ot it might just be your summer love itself. Either way its a completely fresh and lovely look, even if it is almost 100 years old.

NICHOLAS KIRKWOOD continues to win over the fashion world with his statement making shoes and his latest sculptural creations are no different.

As part of a special project from Alta Roma, the Italian institution dedicated to supporting the country's fashion industry, the designer (who only recently won critical acclaim at the Vogue Italia "Who's Next" accessories design awards) has created a shoe inspired by Turineses designer Carlo Mollino.

"I took inspiration from the Cavour writing desk Mr. Mollino made from Zanotta," explains Kirkwood.

"Throughout his industrial design work, Carlo Mollino frequently used a wood, glass and fabric, so the shoe is a direct reference to table. The Cavour table features a balance between heaviness and lightness - a beautiful asymmetrical balance. It's strong visually swooping shape, similar to the shoe that I created for the event," he adds.

Personally I will take a shoe designed from something other then a table.

Are not aesthetics, grace, flow, beauty not elements to covet in a shoe? If we wear heels is it not to look and feel beautiful and not like we are clumping around on a tabletop.

I understand that these are extreme and they are conceptual and they are pure design, but so is couture and at some point it trickles down and even in a milder form I will take a pass on being inspired by tables when it comes to my shoes - thanks very much.

I think this guy does not like women.

One of the advantages of being at the helm of one of the major fashion houses on the planet (and I'm talking Gucci, of course) is the ability to pick (or have made) a dress that looks absolutely smashing on you!

Here is Frida Gianni looking stunning in a full length maxi that I hope to hell is going to be on the racks becasue it is going into my closet the day it is available. I rarely buy contemporary maxi length frocks, having closets of vintage ones at my disposal but this is one that I will happily shell out to own. Joy Stevens is one of my favorite not-so-expensive vintage designers. She did dresses that capture that unabashed sexiness of the 1970s. They tend to be made of that perfect 70s poly fabric that seems to be the only polyester ever produced that for some odd reason is not grotesque. Her dress are easy to wear, cling in the right places and generally give a girl the feeling of being sexy without being a tart. This is a great example with is low cut front, kimono sleeve detailing and elasticized waist treatment so you can dance (and eat) with no worries till the wee hours. I am astonished at why some pieces stay on the site for so long and this is a good example. of a great piece slipping under the radar. The best thing about it is the color. The camera did not capture the true color of this great dress at all so when it arrives and you open the package - the right true, emerald, Caribbean ocean green of it will take your breathe away!

Celebrity Vintage Spot

Today's celebrity vintage spot worn by Mary Kate Olsen also falls under the official "I so want this dress myself" category.

I would have worn this vintage Halston with my black Dior Extremes to contrast the floatiness of it. And because I love my black Dior extremes to death with all things that at first glance you say - no that won't work - which is why it does for some odd reason. On Friday I had a dinner and wore my one shoulder vintage Oscar De La Renta (its my current favorite I have to go to dinner with clients so cant be too overboard but still want to look smashing and it is vintage - dress). I wore my Extremes with it along with an over sized vintage Hermes Jige clutch in bright red and was PDH (pretty damn happy) about the whole look. My personal shoe darling Derek at Holt Renfrew tells me they re-ordered these for fall. Which sort of sucks because I like that even though these shoes are a very recognizable shoe, not many people have them. But sadly, unlike vintage dresses, that is the chance you take with fabulous shoes these days. they are available to the masses. Or at least the ones willing to pop out the cash for them.

Ok so I was gone a lot longer then I expected. I am afraid I had to deal with some unexpected child issues. My Guy and I have 5 between us and one of them suffers from depression and went through a very rough time. I also was in the midst of negotiating to buy a company related to my "other" job, had to travel on business three times in between all of that and well honestly, I could have started back to paying attention to the blog and the site 3 days ago but I was exhausted to the core. So this is just a little note to say thank you to everyone who has left a comment or emailed asking where the hell I am. It is nice to know people actually like reading my little blurb. Sometimes when the site is just trudging along and the blog seems to be a death zone a girl wonders if it is really worth the effort. And for now I guess that answer is still yes. I will be back tomorrow with a real post darling vintage fans! xoxoxox

Ode To The One Shoulder Dress

I am a huge fan of the one shoulder dress - have been for years. They have a certain understated sexiness to them and remind you of Grecian goddesses and being utterly female but with a sort of I am in charge and you better like it buddy twist. I saw this photo posted today of Emmanuelle Chriqui in this black version which is a tartier, (only because it is way more fitted and is cut asymmetrically up the thigh) version of the one I have posted of my self wearing

Mine is a more ladies who lunch version from the 1970s by Oscar De La Renta and done in a fine wool gabardine so the only sexiness to generates comes from the one shoulder cut

and then there are the countless great version you can find from the 1970s done in a fill length maxi like this one I have available over at Shrimpoton Couture. They are all done in that fabulous 1970s liquid poly fabric that for some strange reason seems to be the only acceptable polyester ever done - and why did they stop making that anyway? - I personally have three version of this dress in my closet and I love love love wearing them in the summer on a hot summer night with strappy sandals (this year it will be a gladiator version) gold chandelier earrings and maybe a huge chunky gold bracelet or two. And thats it. I know girls who chop them but I am a huge fan of maxis int he summer. You walk in the restaurant in the evening in one of these, amidst a sea of girls trying to shove their sexuality into your face via mini skirts and overly exposed flesh and you will be the girl to turn heads. Not because you look out of place but because you create your own magical space. These one shoulder dresses whether long or short, hearkens back to long past days when the women who wore them where flaunting their sexuality, but in a so much more clever way then we do today.

Try one and see if I am wrong.

Bye Bye Biba (Again)

Vogue reports this morning:

BIBA founder Barbara Hulanicki has never made any secret of the fact that she thought resurrecting the label was the wrong decision; now it has officially gone into receivership for the second time, she has admitted that she isn't surprised.

"I think it's sad," said Hulanicki, who launched the cult label in 1964. "Biba originally was straight to the public - it stemmed from a shop. The people who [took on Biba] aren't retailers. It's a different way of designing."

Bella Freud headed up the design team for Biba's comeback on the catwalks at London Fashion Week in September 2006, but following her departure in the summer of 2007 - despite the appointment of an all-new, young British design team - things had been looking increasingly gloomy for the business.

Hulanicki's career, meanwhile, is on the up. In March she unveiled an exhibition of her illustrations at London's Coningsby Gallery and is gearing up to launch a fashion and accessories range in a link-up with an as-yet unnamed retailer, according to WWD.

This one was an easy prediction. I love/lust/am addicted to Biba (the original) and I had looked to the re-launch of the label under Bella Freud with the greatest of anticipation and was sorely disappointed in the results. There was the occasional great piece - I did end up with one great black dress - although the one dress I did buy from the re-launched line was pretty much an original piece re-done so I am not sure if that helps the argument.

Re-launching a label is a tough thing. A really tough thing actually, especially when the original is just so damn iconic. So no more new Biba. I guess we all have to go back to collecting the originals again. Though some of us may have never stopped.
