Parking a Domain Name at Godaddy

This post explains how to park your domain name at GoDaddy.

A Parked Domain Name means that visitors see a temporary web page when they enter your domain name in a web browser. You can park your domain name to indicate you are reserving it until you create your website, find a hosting provider, or sell the domain name to a third party.

STEP 1 :- Go to At the top of the screen enter your Username/Customer# and Password and click Log In.

STEP 2 :- After logging in, click the My Account button on the top left.

STEP 3 :- Next to Products,Domains, select the green Launch button. You will see the domain details in a new tab.

STEP 4 :- Click the check box to the left of the domain you want to update the nameservers for, then select the Nameservers button, and choose Set Nameservers.

STEP 5 :- Select I want to park my domains and click the OK button.

STEP 6 :- Click the OK button to confirm message.

Congratulations, now you know how to parking your domain name with godaddy!
Once the domain name is parked, please allow up to 24 hours for DNS to propagate and this change to take full effect.

Change Nameservers at GoDaddy

A nameserver is similar to a telephone switchboard. It holds the information that tells the Internet where to find your web site and where to deliver your email. Name servers look something like this:

ns1.example.com.

This post explains how to change your name server settings using GoDaddy. If your domain is registered at godaddy.com, you can change the nameservers to point to your web hosting account.

STEP 1 :- Go to At the top of the screen enter your Username/Customer# and Password and click Log In.

STEP 2 :- After logging in, click the My Account button on the top left.

STEP 3 :- Next to Products,Domains, select the green Launch button. You will see the domain details in a new tab.

STEP 4 :- Click the check box to the left of the domain you want to update the nameservers for, then select the Nameservers button, and choose Set Nameservers.

STEP 5 :- The Set Nameservers menu will come up, select the I have specific nameservers for my domains option, then replace the existing nameservers with the following settings and click the OK button when you are done:
Nameserver 1: ns1.example.com
Nameserver 2: ns2.example.com

STEP 6 :- Click the OK button to confirm message.

Congratulations, now you know how to update your Nameservers with godaddy!
Once the Nameservers are changed, please allow up to 24 hours for DNS to propagate and this change to take full effect.

How To Install Joomla 1.7 through cPanel with Fantastico

This post will give you a step by step guide on how to install Joomla from your cPanel. If you have hosting managed by cPanel software, there's a way to install Joomla quickly for your hosting account. I will explain this procedure here in all possible details. To write this post, I used my hosting account.

Login to cPanel of your hosting account. Please use information you received from your hosting provider about your cPanel link, username and password.
Once you login to cPanel, look for Fantastico icon. Some hosting providers don't offer this cPanel service. If you can't find the Fantastico icon, it's probably not included with your hosting.

After click on the Fantastico icon, you are redirected to the Fantastico main page. Scroll down to “Content Management”. Find the “Joomla 1.7” link and click on it.
You are now on page that describes Joomla and shows your current Joomla installations. To install Joomla, click New Installation link.
This page is the most important. You should:
1. Select domain or subdomain where to install Joomla.
2. Select directory for installation (leave empty to install in root).
3. Enter Joomla superadministrator's username.
4. Enter Joomla superadministrator's password.
5. Enter Joomla superadministrator's email address.
6. Enter Joomla superadministrator's full name.
7. Enter Joomla site name.
8. Select whether to install sample data in Joomla or not (it's recommended for Joomla newbies to check this option). Once you fill all fields, click Install Joomla 1.7 button to proceed.
The next page informs you that MySQL database for your Joomla is automatically created. It also informs you about frontend and backend links of your new Joomla site. Click the Finish Installation button to continue.
You will then get a confirmation page of your installation. Also, it will show your superadministrator's username and password and frontend and backend links of your new Joomla site again. You can send an email with these information to keep them for later reference. On the other hand, you can inform other person that you have installed Joomla for him/her.

There are many ways to obtain and use a website's IP address. This is an easy way to find them using an online tool or a PC.

All files on UNIX (including Linux and other UNIX variants) machines have access permissions. In this way the operating system knows how to deal with requests to access the files. There are three types of access:

Read - Denoted as r, files with read access can be displayed to the user
Write - Denoted as w, files with write access can be modified by the user
Execute - Denoted as x, files with execute access can be executed as programs bythe user

Access types are set for three types of user group:

User - The owner of the file
Group - Other files which are in the same folder or group
World - Everyone else

The web server needs to be able to read your web pages in order to be able to display them in a browser. The following permissions need to be set in order for your web site to function properly.

All HTML files and images need to be readable by others. The value for this is 644 (readable by User, Group and World, and writable by User). It is set automatically when you upload files
All folders need to be executable by others. The value for this is 755 (readable by User, Group and World, writable by User, executable by User, Group and World). It is set automatically when you create a folder
All CGI files (all files in the cgi-bin folder) need to be executable by other. The value for this is 755 (readable by User, Group, and World, writable by User, executable by User, Group, and World). It is not set automatically when you upload files. You need to change file permissions manually

Note:- It is important that none of your files or folders is writable by anyone else. Any file or folder which is writable by others can be erased by them.

To change file or folder permissions:-

Step 1: Open your File Manager and navigate to the file or folder that you need to change

Step 2: Click on the name of the file or folder
Step 3: Click on the Change Permissions link in the top menu of the File Manager page
Step 4: Click on as many check boxes as you require to create the right permission. The permission numbers underneath the check boxes will update automatically

Step 5: Click on the Change Permissions button when you are ready. The new permission level is saved and the display updated to show the modified file.

How to redirect www URLs to non-www?

In order to redirect all requests for www.yourdomain.com to yourdomain.com, you should set the appropriate rewrite rule. This can be done by adding the following lines at the beginning of the .htaccess file in your public_html folder:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]
From now on, when someone accesses http://www.yourdomain.com she/he will be redirected to http://yourdomain.com.
Using this method is safe because it should not create any redirection loops nor it should interfere with other rewrite rules.

You may experience issues with the non-standard http ports Cpanel works with. Usually Cpanel can be opened from:

http://yourdomainname.com/cpanel
http://yourdomainname.com:2082
http://cpanel.servername.com

Sometimes local firewalls allow only access to sites on port 80. In such cases, use the last URL. Note that the address "3" is a web based proxy which provides you with the option to access your cPanel via the default http port 80. We have set this extra service for our Customers which Internet Service Providers blocked ports 2082 and 2083.

You may check if the ports are blocked executing the following commands:

If you are running Linux do the following:

Click Start
Click Run
Type cmd
Type telnet yourdomainname.com 2083
Type telnet yourdomainname.com 2082

If you are running Windows do the following:

Start your Linux/Mac OS console terminal
Type telnet yourdomainname.com 2083
Type telnet yourdomainname.com 2082

If the port is not blocked the results should look like the following one. Trying IP_of_the_server ( 10.10.10.10 for an example )...

Connected to servername.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

Different result will means that the port is blocked and you should use the web proxy link provided above.

Open Outlook 2007
Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings
Click on the Email tab and click on the New... button.

Next select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP and click Next.
On the Auto Account Setup window check the Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.
Select Internet E-mail option and click Next.
Fill in the following fields:

The default TCP port for FTP connection is port 21. Sometimes the local Internet Service Provider blocks this port and this will result in FTP connection issues.
Here's how to, depending on your OS, check whether your ISP blocks port 21:

Click on the Start menu button, click "Run".In the text field of this window you need to type "cmd" and then press the "Enter" key. Another window will open. It is the so called "MS-DOS prompt" or "command prompt". Just type the following command in the command prompt window and press "Enter":

Each Mac OS is delivered with a preinstalled terminal emulator. The terminal is a tool which allows you to execute commands from the command line. First, login to your CPanel account.
Once you’ve logged in, select MySQL databases from the list. Keep in mind that your Cpanel account may be using a skin or different theme, so it will not always look exactly like the screenshot below.

Type in a name for your new database and click the “Add DB” button.
Then, type in a Username and a Password into the relative fields and click the “Add User” button.
Once your Database and User have been created, you need to give that user permission to use that database. We do this by selecting the username we created from the drop down and the database we created from the drop down, making sure the “All” checkbox is selected and clicking the “Add User to DB” option.
The last thing you will need is the MySQL server hostname. If this hasn’t been supplied to you by your web host, you can get it from this screen in this location:

Note that the Username and Database will be prepended with your Cpanel login name. For example, if you created a database called DB and your cpanel login was mysite then your new database will be mysite_db. That’s it. You’re now ready to use the MySQL database that you just created.

To access the Addon Domains tool, click on the corresponding icon located on the main screen of your cPanel interface.
Enter the name of the addon domain in the blank field next to New Domain Name.

Enter the name of the directory which contains the subdomain that the addon domain will point to in the blank field next to Subdomain/FTP Username: (This directory will be the location for the addon domain's files, just as public_html is the location for your primary domain's files.)
Type in the password for the new addon domain, and click on Add Domain!

You can upload files directly to this addon domain using the username and password for the addon domain to log in through FTP.

Click on the "Subdomain" icon
This will bring up a box for you to enter the prefix to the URL for the subdomain you want to create

That's it, the subdomain is created
Click "Go Back"
This process also creates a folder with the same name as the subdomain where files can be stored

How to create FTP accounts in cPanel?

To add new FTP accounts, click on the FTP Accounts icon from the Files box of your CPanel.

On the top of the page you will be prompted for all the necessary details for your new account:

When filling in the details, make sure to pick a strong password for the account. This is important for preventing the so-called brute-force attacks. A strong password will contain at least one number and one special character.
One of the boxes is called "Directory". It determines which will be the home directory of the newly created account. Leaving it blank will allow a full access to your hosting account.
SiteGround recommends that a specific directory is set for each particular user. Leaving the directory space blank will allow your FTP users access the main folder. They will be able to alter the content of your website.
If you are willing to grant such access, you should consider doing this for a limited period of time and then change your password. Otherwise your account could be compromised.
In order to complete the FTP account creation, click on Create at the end of the section.

Removing FTP accounts
FTP accounts can be removed by logging in cPanel and going to FTP accounts. In the Account Management box all FTP accounts will be listed. One of the options in the Functions column is Delete.

Well done! You can now add, manage and delete FTP accounts!

How to use filezilla to upload a website?

FileZilla is a freeware, so it means you can download it and use for free. A place to get it is i.e. FileZilla's homepage at SourceForgeNet, url: http://www.filezilla.sourceforge.net/
Once you downloaded and installed the program you'll be able to launch the program and proceed with uploading.

NOTE: You will need an FTP address of your site plus login name and password for it. All of it should be in the Login Information email you got from us after registering the hosting account, please refer to it.
NOTE: Please make sure that your local internet settings (firewall, anti-virus, IE Internet Options Security Settings) won't block you from connecting to the server on Port: 21 (you can skip this now, but if you have problems with connecting to your website please check it).

Step 1:- After you launch FileZilla you should get such screen:

As you can see, the interface is not too complicated. On the left you can see your local folder tree (teal frame) and selected folder content (green frame). The view and program windows are customisable so once you feel more comfortable with it you can adjust it to your preferences.
To configure FileZilla to connect to your website please click on the small computer icon on top left (red arrow). Step 2:- A Site Manager window will show up.
Click on New Site button and enter a name for the new connection settings. (It can be really anything, it's just so that you know where it takes you to;

Step 3:- Now you need to fill in the connection details (marked with red arrows).
Please enter host name (this is your FTP address, please NOTE: NO "www", "http" but "ftp" goes in front of the domain name).
Your Server Type is FTP. Logontype is Normal.
Username and password should be provided to you in Login Information e-mail from VELNET.
If you're not using your computer or you share your pc with other people and you don't want them to be able to connect to your site you can select the option not to remember your password (underlined with blue).
Once you're sure the settings are correct click Save and Exit button.

Step 4:- Now After you returned to main program window click small arrow next to the computer icon top left to see drop-down menu. Pick your website from the list to connect.

Step 5:- Connection established. You will see the folders of your site on the left side of the screen. They vary depending on the type of server you're on (information provided in Login Details email from VELNET).
One of the folders you see is your website main directory, the rest of them are system folders, any modifications you make to the system folders may damage your website structure.
For cPanel server type your upload directory is public_html folder. (for PLESK look further down)

If you are on PLESK server your folder structure will look different and your upload folder is httpdocs.

Step 6:- Enter (double-click) your upload directory (public_html or httpdocs).
Step 7:- Now find (your website)files you want to upload on your local machine (left-side folder tree and content).

Simply select the files and drag-and-drop them to the right of the screen (your web folder).

You will notice the transfer progress on the bottom of the screen.
If all is OK, your FileZilla window will show the files you uploaded on the right.
Congratulations! You have just uploaded the website. It should be visible in your internet browser window.
NOTE: In order for the website to show only after you enter the domain name in internet browser your main webpage MUST be named index.html (or index.htm, index.php... you get the idea).
