Rooting my Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i)

After using Xperia Mini Pro for 4 months, today I decided to root my android phone. Not that I'm worry about my phone getting bricked because of rooting, I just want to keep the warranty intact for a while.

For the rooting process, I was just following the instruction posted in xda developer forum.

How to root your Xperia mini pro (sk17i) / Xperia mini (sk15)

The procedure is very straight forward. It shouldn't take more than 3 minutes.

The process.

Please note that this procedure is for Windows only.

1. Download the DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip and extract the downloaded file.
2. Go to the folder where its extracted, locate "runme.bat" and execute it.
3. Follow the instruction on the screen.

Google Maps running at the background and draining my Xperia Mini Pro battery

I have been using Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro for almost a month. My first Android phone. For now, I think it's a good phone.

1 big issue I had encounter is google maps running at the background and consuming battery power more than the screen.

It was when I had fully charge my phone at 12 midnight and then leave it for a sweet dream. At 6am (after 6 hours), I notice that my Android phone has only 40% battery left. Checking at the battery usage, The maps process alone has taken most of the battery power.

So... after a few workaround I've manage identify and solve the batery issue caused by maps process.

Here's what I do to solve battery issue caused by maps process.

First go to Latitude. Go to Setting and choose "Do not detect your location".
Then go to Latitude Setting again and choose "Sign out of Latitude".

Next, Goto phone "Setting", "Location and Security" settings.
Under "Location and Security", disable "Use wireless networks" and disable also "Use GPS satellites".

When it's done, goto phone Setting -> Applications -> Running Services.
Find the running Maps process, tap on it and choose Stop to stop maps process.
You might need to repeat the stop process if there's multiple maps process running.

If you had a similar problem with your android phone battery, you can try the above method. It might not work on a different Android phone but I believe it's worth to try it.

A CCTV Maintenance Contract Proposal

last month, I have drafted a CCTV maintenance contract proposal for a customer. Although until now they haven't gave me a reply, I believe it's worth spending time preparing it.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

This proposal is prepared in response to your request for “CCTV Maintenance Services Proposal” for ABC Consultancy.

OBJECTIVE

To propose and perform CCTV Maintenance Services for ABC Consultancy located at Tower 2, Which City.

The proposed maintenance service is quarterly schedules for a period of ONE year. To better understanding of the proposal content, we would be very glad if you wish to meet us and give us opportunity to present it to you.

THE PROPOSAL

1. DEFINITION AND INTERPRETATION

1.1 Definition

“Equipments” means:-

i. One (1) Unit of 4-Ch MPEG4 Pentaplex DVR.

ii. Four (4) unit of camera.

“Site” means:

ABC Consultancy, 1st Floor, Tower 2, Which City where the Equipments are placed;

“Maintenance Service” means:-

The maintenance service consisting of the Remedial Maintenance Service (hereinafter defined) and the Preventive Maintenance Service (hereinafter defined) to be provided by our team pursuant to this Agreement for the Customer in respect of the Equipments;

“Remedial Maintenance Service” means:

The on-call assistance for the repair or rectification services provided by our team at the site inclusive of spare parts replacement in the event of any occurrence of malfunctions, breakdowns or faulty operations in respect of the Equipments or any part thereof to be carried in the way and manner more particularly described in Clause 2.3 -Clause 2.7 hereunder;

“Preventive Maintenance Service’ means:-

The quarterly inspections of the Equipments to be carried out by our team at the Site which to be carried in accordance with its Scope of Preventive Maintenance Service appended hereto as Appendix 1;

2. PROVISION OF THE MAINTENANCE SERVICE

2.1 In consideration of the Total Maintenance Service Charge (hereinafter defined) we shall throughout the entire duration of the Term provide the Maintenance Service subject to the terms and conditions of this proposal.

Preventive Maintenance Service

2.2 CCTV Technology shall provide the Preventive Maintenance Service on the date and time as agreed upon by the Parties and in accordance with its Scope of Preventive Maintenance Service as set out under Appendix 1. Any changes to the said date and time as stated therein shall be mutually agreed upon by both Parties and reduced in writing. In this proposal the preventive maintenance schedule shall be based on quarterly visit.

Remedial Maintenance Service

2.3 CCTV Technology shall provide the Remedial Maintenance Service in the way and manner prescribed as follows:

a) to provide unlimited Remedial Maintenance Service at no additional charges during the Coverage Hours (hereinafter defined) upon the receipt of the Customer’s call;

b) to provide instant phone support at no additional charges during the Coverage Hours (hereinafter defined) upon the receipt of the Customer’s call;

c) to be fully responsible for the Equipments in the event it is deemed necessary to remove the Equipments or any part thereof from the Site to conduct the Remedial Maintenance Service until the successful completion and re-installation of the Equipments at the Site to the Customer’s satisfaction.

Remedial Maintenance Service Terms and Conditions

2.4 This Remedial Maintenance applies only to defects in parts and workmanship supplied by CCTV Technology relating to normal use. It does not cover:

(a) equipment supplied by other or previous contractor;

(b) damage incurred in shipping or handling;

(d) damage due to causes beyond the control of CCTV Technology such as excessive voltage, mechanical shock or water damage;

(e) damage caused by unauthorized attachment, alterations, modifications or foreign objects being used with or in conjunction with the product;

2.5 CCTV Technology will not take responsible of equipment supplied by other contractor.

2.6 The Remedial Maintenance Service shall be made available to the Customer next business day from Monday to Friday and shall exclude all public holidays.

Adding password to Ruckus Wireless Mesh Network through ZoneDirector

Changing setting in Ruckus Wireless Mesh network is easy. Just login to ZoneDirector and start doing what you should do.

Last week, I encounter 1 case where end user wants to add a security to their existing Mesh network.

Here's the screenshot and a little explanation of what I have done.

1. Login to Ruckus Wireless ZoneDirector
2.Click on Configure tab and then choose WLANs from selection menu (on the left)
3. Under WLANs, choose edit. (goto next screen)

4. Verify the ESSID
5. Under Authentication option, choose Authentication method. In most cases, it will be Open or Shared.
6. Under Encription choose other than None
7. Type your own Passphrase and click ok.

Using dyndns.org with your DVR

In dyndns.org :

Create an account with a username and password.
Login
"Account" -> "My Service" -> "Add Host Services" -> "Add Dynamic DNS Host"
Enter and select hostname
Enter IP address of your computer
Click "Add host"

In your DVR software:

Find DDNS network settings
Enable DDNS
Enter username, password and hostname from dyndns.org
Apply the settings

Then if your IP address changes, DVR software sends the data to dydns.org and updates it. This allows to access your computer from remote location by using not a weird IP address, but a user-friendly hostname.

p.s.Please note that routers can also be configures to work with DDNS (instead of configuring DVR software, you can configure your router).

This guideline is to assist anyone who wish to configure their CCTV DVR and internet router so that they can view or monitor site or home from the their office or any remote location through the internet.

How to configure or setup a DVR and a internet router for remote viewing

Connect your DVR to your router
Use menu on DVR to assign internal IP and gateway and port number.

This Local IP must be in the same Gateway range as the Router. If you are unsure check the Router and locate the Status section or goto the Command prompt of Windows XP and type in ipconfig.

Look for Gateway. If the Gateway is 192.168.1.1, then you can make the DVR's IP anything from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.255.

Also you will need to use the same SubNet Mask, which is typically 255.255.255.0, and also use the same gateway.
Next find out what port your DVR uses. The easiest way to it is by reading the manual of your DVR. Look for the network section of it.

Also if it comes with network software, check out if in the connection area the software shows the port number.

Also check the Server software/Programming (Network section of it) to see if the port is listed.

In many cases it will be as simple as just Port 80, which is an HTTP port.
Set your router to forward chosen port to internal IP address of DVR.

To access the Router itself, use the Gateway you just located. If the gateway is 192.168.1.1, then enter that into the location edit box of your browser and then click the Enter button. A username and a password are typically required, but it depends on a router. For Linksys use "admin", "admin". By default DLink doesn't require any username or password (It is highly recommended to change the default password).

Once you're logged into the Router, in the Applications & Gaming Section / Servers of the Router, you need to add a Server/Application. Enter the port number and select TCP only. Where it says Port 0 to 0 enter the same port number twice. Or if your DVR uses for example, ports 3550, 4550, 5550, 6550, and there is nothing else utilizing these ports in between, then you can actually just enter one line, 3550 - 6550.

Enter the DVR/Cameras internal IP.

Enable it.
Set up additional entries for as many ports the DVR uses, to the same local IP. Check your DVR manual and it's networking section for all additional ports required. Also check the DVR software itself.

If your router has enough free entries, you can seperate them. Use it like DVR_HTTP for the browser port, DVR_AUDIO for the audio port, etc.

If you are going to use VNC to a PC DVR, then you would need to set up port 5900, and perhaps call it VNC_DVR, for example.
You have a static IP so you don't need to use sevices like www.dyndns.org . You just enter your static IP and your router forwards packets to your DVR.

2 Longitude and Latitude tools for Google Maps.

1.LatLng Tooltip
The LatLng Tooltip shows a Longitude and Latitude coordinate on Google Maps exactly under your mouse cursor. Just bring your mouse to any location in Google Maps and press SHIFT key to show longitude and latitude. You can keep pressing the SHIFT key and move your mouse cursor around to see the coordinate changes.

2. LatLng Marker
Longitude and Latitude Marker let you label locations on Google Maps with longitude and latitude coordinate. Just bring your mouse cursor to any place or location, right click and choose "Drop LatLng Marker". You can drop as many marker as you wish. Shouldn't be any limitation.

Before you can do any of the above, you need to do a small setting changes in Google Maps.
1. Click Google Maps option icon and choose Maps Labs.
2. Scroll down to locate LatLng Tooltip and LatLng Marker.
3. Enable both of them and choose Save Changes.

How to find GPS coordinate using Google Maps

1. Open Google Maps and locate the location.

2. Right click on those location and choose "Center map here".

3. Paste below code to browser address bar and press enter.

4. A longitude and latitude popup appear.

5. Copy the information and paste in to Google maps search box and click search maps or press enter.

Google maps is one of the most useful tool these days. You can search and locate almost any place using Google maps. You can then share those location using email, blog or web page.

Here's how to add or embed Google maps to Blogger Blogspot or a web page.

1. Open Google maps and search for address or location you want to embed.

2. Click on the Link text and then copy the HTML code. You can choose to customize the map size. Don't forget to copy the new customized HTML code.

3. Embed to Blogger Blogspot.
Create or edit a blog post and make sure you select the Edit HTML tab. Paste the Google maps HTML code and publish your post.

Adding or embedding Google maps to a web page is very straight forward. Just make sure you edit or create your web page in a plain text mode and past the HTML code at the appropriate place and you're done.

Microsoft Office Tips - Using percentage formula in Excel

My daily job requires me to issue a quotation to customer. In most cases I need to calculate how many percent I should increase the price.

Using a normal calculator or windows calculator to calculate percentage or adding a percentage is easy.

For example, I purchase a 98.00 dollar RAM and sell it 35% higher. Using a calculator, I will just press 98 then + then 35 then % then =. I got 132.2.

This is easy if it's only for 1 item. But if I need to calculate a few item, then I will start making a mistake.

A friend had thought me using Microsoft Excel formula and here's 2 type of calculation involving percentage that I will use when preparing a quotation with Microsoft Excel.

1. Calculate Percentage by deciding selling price.
Using this formula, I will need to play around with my selling price to get the percentage.
The formula is: =(Price-Cost)/Cost

2. Calculate selling Price by deciding Percentage
Using this formula, will need to decide how many percent I want to increase or maybe decrease my selling price.
The Formula is: =Cost*(1+Percentage)

Please note that in the example, Price and Cost cells is Number formatted, while Percentage cells is Percentage formatted.

How to enable Word Wrap and status bar in Windows Notepad at the same time.

As a frequent Notepad user, I didn't notice that Notepad status bar will gone once Word Wrap is enable. Recently when I read an article at lifehacker, there is a way to enable Word Wrap and Status Bar at the same time in Notepad. It can only be done by editing Windows Registry.

Here's how.
1. Start Notepad, make sure Word Wrap is enable and close Notepad.
2. Click Start, type regedit and press Enter.
3. In the left pane, expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER then Software then Microsoft and then click on Notepad (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Notepad).
4. In the right pane, locate StatusBar and double click on it.
5. Change Value Data from 0 to 1. Click OK and close Registry Editor.

Start Notepad and you will notice the status bar. Now, if you play around with Word Wrap again (disable and enable), Notepad status bar will automatically disabled.

In Windows 7, to call the About Windows window (above screen) :

- Click start and type winver at the Search programs and files column and press enter.

In my case, my Windows 7 is registered to Ultimate. Now , I would like to give my Windows 7 registration a new owner and a company as well.

1. Start registry editor. Click start and type regedit and press enter.
2. In the registry,in the left pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then SOFTWARE then Microsoft then Windows NT and then click on CurrentVersion (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion)
3. Locate RegisteredOrganisation and RegisteredOwner registry value in the right pane.
4. Double click on RegisteredOrganisation and type in a new organisation name. Click Ok.
5. Double click on RegisteredOwner and type in a new owner name. Click Ok.

You can now verify the changes by calling the About Windows screen again. Type winver and press enter.

How to run Telnet Client or Telnet Server on Windows 7

To run Telnet client or Telnet server on Windows 7, you don't have to install additional software. On Windows 7, Telnet Client and Telnet Server services is already installed. It was just disabled by default.

To enable either one or both of them, here's the step:
1. Click Start then Control Panel
2. Click on Programs. Under Programs and Features, choose Turn Windows features on or off.
3. Scroll down on the Windows Features window until you found Telnet Client and Telnet Server. There's also TFTP Client below them. Just click on the Telnet Client or Telnet Server check box (same goes to TFTP Client) and click OK TO enable them.

You can now start using Telnet Client or Telnet Server or TFTP Client services on Windows 7.

Most Samsung mobile phones include a fake call feature that allows you to simulate an incoming call. You can use this feature to excuse yourself from a meeting or create an interruption to end a conversation.

Configure Samsung Wave for Fake calls
You can configure the fake call features to sound more like an actual call by recording a voice message that will be played back when you answer the fake call. To make your fake call sound more authentic, have someone else record the voice message.

To configure the fake call feature,
1 In Idle mode, access Menu mode and open the setting menu.
2 Access the application setting menu.
3 Select the fake call function.
4 Select whether or not to play a fake call voice when receiving a fake call. Your setting is saved automatically.
5 If you choose to use a fake voice, record a voice memo to play back when receiving a fake call.

Initiate a fake call
To simulate an incoming call, press and hold the appropriate key (the Volume key down or Navigation key down). You may need to set a shortcut key for fake calls using the shortcut setting in the phone setting menu. See your phone user
manual.
Within a few seconds, you will receive a fake incoming call, which you can accept or reject.
