Create Ribbon Strip from Fabric

Ribbons are my favorite embellishment in paper crafting projects. If possible, I'd want to have ribbons in all colors and sizes. But sometimes you need to stretch your creativity a bit to use what you have to add to your project.

I find making my own ribbon strips from fabric---an old dress, table cloth, baby clothes, to name a few---is really exciting. Fabric gives you endless opportunities to explore.

In the pictures below, I used satin fabric to make my ribbon strip.

I cut the fabric into a strip. At this point, I'm not too concerned about cutting my fabric super straight.

I run my strip, both sides, near the heat in one go to seal the edges from the thread that comes off from the fabric. I do the same thing with both ends.

The fabric ribbon is ready to be used.

Tips:
You can customize your fabric ribbon with your flowers too. Also, instead of plain, you get your favorite design on the ribbon itself. It's definitely a bonus that is sure to add interest to your crafting project! :)

Pink Rose in Pastel

While roses are definitely everyone's favorite, they are not always easy to paint. To capture the likeness of this flower, I carefully determined the arrangement of the petal layers. I find it an interesting task to paint this rose that bloomed on my front yard. I really wanted to bring out the beauty of it on paper. I love the striking color of the rose against the dark background.

This rose painting will surely brighten up someone's home. :)

Framed Arabic Letters

My two-year old loves to see this artwork hanging on our living room wall. I hung this artwork above the fireplace, not only as a decorative piece, but also to help my children learn the Arabic alphabet.

It works! My little one can recognize some of the letters now and we use this artwork to reinforce what he's learned and to teach him the rest of the letters.

Published Work is Finally Revealed!

I'm so excited to announce that my pastel painting, 'Cherries', has been published in the latest issue of Azizah Magazine!

'Cherries', pastel, 25" x 19"

Pastel was the first art medium that I used when I started my professional career as a portrait artist. This medium is quick, requires no drying time and a lighter color can be painted over a darker color. I completed this painting in two days. I could never complete such a large painting so quickly with colored pencil with such short notice.

Painting with pastel gives me the freedom to put my colors on the paper, at least at the beginning stage. I only focus on the subject details towards the end, as I build up my layers of colors until they look realistic.

This, larger than life sized cherries, painting is currently hanging in my living room.

Grapes and Parsley Card

Personally, I love the composition of the grapes in this card. The parsley really makes a nice contrast between the green color in it and the dark colors from the grapes.

Red Apple and Peaches in Colored Pencil

Red apple and sliced peaches in a white bowl.

To paint the white bowl and plate, I carefully used my greys, tan, and light yellow and orange to make it realistic. I like how the apple is in the dark but is still visible.

Overall, I just love the great contrast in this painting.

Turn Kitchen Trash into a Useful Craft

I just love this recycled can project! So simple yet so useful. Why waste a few bucks to get a pencil/pen/brush holder, when you can make it yourself.

Before I worked on the outside of the can, I lined up the inside with a foam sheet and glued it. This is to prevent the sharp edge of the can from cutting a finger. This is especially important if you're making it for a child. Then I started to measure my paper to cover the outside can.

Tip:

Carefully peel the paper that comes with the can, and use it as your guide. Simply place it on your patterned paper and cut it out.

For this can, I just simply decorated it with buttons, punched leaves, alphabet stickers and star blings. Isn't that easy ?!

Think twice before you throw your cans away! :)

Paint on Felt

I have been wanting to use felt sheets that I purchased before but I had no idea what project I wanted to use them on. I have them in solid colors of black, red and white. I thought of making bows from them but I didn't want my bows to be plain.

I used my Prima mask and pearlescent liquid acrylic paints to achieve the patterns I wanted. I placed the mask on the felt and with my brush, then I dipped the ink and painted the evacuated areas. The paints really work well with felt and I like them because they give a nice pearlescent effect. I let the felt dry for about half an hour or so before I used it in my project. I also had felt sheet patterns in gold, silver, and pink.

This is such an easy technique to give your plain felts some patterns of your choice!

Orange Slice and Parsley Card

2 Pears in Colored Pencil

This is another painting that I worked on with fabric as a background. This time I used a fully patterned fabric as my foreground. With the half flat dark as a background and busy pattern, the focus is really on the main subjects, the green and brown pears.

As always, I strive to paint realistic subjects. Are these pears good enough to eat?

Cute 3D Bucket

I loved to hold get-together parties for my family and friends at my home when I lived in Malaysia. I'd always find a creative way to give goodies to my guests that they could bring home with them. When I came up with this design, I was super excited because now I can custom my gift holders. I want to leave them with a long lasting memento.

I used glimmer cardstocks of pearl white and brown to make this bucket, which is really sturdy to hold candies, cookies and other small treats. I simply punched the flowers from glimmer red paper, adhered the handle with brads and accented with a tag and a ribbon.

Now, is this bucket a cutey or what? :)

Create Solid Dark Background with Colored Pencil

It's easy to create a solid dark background with colored pencil.

Normally, we attempt to use fresh, sharpened colored pencils straight from the box. Have you tried to mix the colors together? I'll show you how to create a flat, dark background using only 3 pencils.

First, I used dark brown to fill the paper with heavy pressure. You can use dark red or dark green too.

For the second color, I used dark blue to cover the first layer with heavy pressure. As you can see, the color is already dark.

I used black as the last color, and again, applied it heavily to cover the first two layers. Now I get a solid dark color. It's that easy!

Tip: I used sharp, pointed pencils to create my dark background.

Black is Beautiful!

January Prima Pick and Color Palette at Prima blog brings an interesting color palette. Honestly, I'd never think to combine these colors, black, dark brown, dark and light grey, together in my projects.

For this month's challenge, I decided to make a circle shape corner bookmark.

Stylish Corner Bookmark - Circle Shape, 4" x 4"

I used Prima paper, lace and blings for this project. For the flowers, I made the 3" rose from black poly-satin fabric and layered it with a sheer flower. I sprayed my paper with glimmer mist and added a finishing touch with diamond stickles on the lace.

I'm pretty happy with the look of my finished bookmark. What's more, it's even prettier when used as a page marker. :)

Cherries and Leaves Card

I had the pleasure to record my favorite fruits for my greeting cards line. Cherries, not only delicious to eat, also make great art subjects. They come in pink, red and maroon. I have multiple paintings with cherries as my subject.

When I first attempted to do this painting, I had no idea how difficult it was to paint fabric. It requires great patience to make it realistic looking and I was pretty happy with the result. The highlight of this painting is the peppers, the background really helps them to 'pop out'.

Bring Back Sweet Memories Before You Read

I had the pleasure of working on this lovely bookmark for my mother in-law.

'My Love', Stylish Corner Bookmark: Mini Album Page, 4" x 3" (folded)

4" x 6" unfolded.

Front page: I punched holes and thread ribbons of dark pink, brown and green.

Left page: I punched out the pictures of my mother in-law and late father in-law with a circle punch. I stamped the wordings and images to accompany the pictures. I also printed out their names and highlighted them with crystal stickers.

Right page: I combined pictures of my parents in-law now and then.

The corner bookmark as a page marker.

Now, will it bring back sweet memories before she starts reading her favorite book? I hope so.

Beautiful Autumn Leaves Card

I love working with colored pencil. When I started my colored pencil art series for my greeting cards line, my goal was to expose the beauty of working with this medium. Easy to work with, no messy clean up and not requiring much space, make it a number 1 choice of medium for me.

I started my colored pencil art series for my greeting cards line by gathering subjects that were unique and pleasing to my eyes. The subjects that I portrayed were still life and florals. This was the beginning of my greeting cards line which I named, signature cards.

I love autumn!

The leaves are changing colors, weather turns cold and everybody wears nice coats. As for me, it's easy to appreciate what our Creator has given to us. Driving around I see many colorful trees. I have the pleasure to record them on my greeting cards such as these pretty leaves in red, orange and light brown.
