Spool Cottage

Two weeks ago we launched our Art and Craft Classes here at Spool Cottage! Spool Cottage is my cozy Fiber Arts studio here in downtown Loveland. Laurel and I are having such a good time facilitating these workshops- stitching, knitting, mending, and so much more to come. Our classes include materials, instructions, snacks, homemade bread, beverages, and our super fun merit badge program (which you have to come check out for yourself!)

Agnes Grey Shawl

Agnes Grey is a Sontag shawl worked in a squishy cashmere-merino blend yarn from Anzula called For Better or Worsted. This cross-body wrap is knit from the top down in a heart shape and finished with i-cord ties to secure it in place. The garter check pattern across the body of the shawl gives an illusion of basket-weave texture and it is suitable for beginning knitters.

We are just home from the SoCal Fiber Fair.

This was a beautiful venue for a Fiber Arts Fair, and a great opportunity to connect with knitters, crocheters, spinners, and fiber arts enthusiasts.

Thank you to all of the organizers, vendors, volunteers, teachers, and most of all, attendees, who made this such a special show for us! That is a wrap on our 2025 shows. Stay tuned as we are building our event calendar for 2026!

Camp At Sunset

I am announcing the release of a new pattern, Camp At Sunset, which is a colorwork wrap knit in a beautiful gradient colorway created by Kami Noyes at Ranching Tradition Fiber. Kami is a fifth-generation ranches who raises Targhee Rambouillet Sheep in the Tobacco Root Valley of Montana. She is a self-taught fiber artist and created this colorway on her Range Camp base which is a plied Targhee wool from her own flock.

It's officially Knitting Season! September is here and it is time to plan fall and winter knitting projects. I have a variety of projects on the needles: 2 cardigans, a lace shawl, an assigned pooling project, lots of spinning, and of course I always have a pair of socks in the works.

Here is a link to my pattern page if you are interested in exploring any of my patterns, some are included in our books, some are excerpts from books and magazines I have been published in, and some are just standalone patterns that I created for fun. I have a new design coming this fall/winter with some Range Camp Wool from Kami Noyes at Ranching Tradition Fiber in Montana.

What is on your needles, what do you have planned, are there new techniques you want to learn? I signed up for an Orenburg Knitted Lace class this winter that I am looking forward to. Happy Knitting Season!

Copper K Fiber Festival!

Copper K Fiber Festival is right around the corner! Taking place July 19 & 20 in the Tobacco Root Valley near Whitehall, Montana, this is a one-of-a-kind fiber arts festival. It is also the last year of the show, so if you have ever wanted to attend, this is your last chance. We have met so many wonderful vendors, teachers, attendees, and fiber folks at this show.

We will miss this show dearly but are also hopeful that it might springboard into another event so we can keep gathering together over our mutual love of fiber arts, wool culture, and the creative arts.

We are an independent press and work from our home-based studios at the foot of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Joanna Johnson's work has been published in Knitty, Piecework, Jane Austen Knits, Spin-Off, Sockupied, and Knitting Traditions magazines, as well as Petite Purls and Rhythm of the Home. She has a BA in Literature from Drew University and has greatly enjoyed writing the stories and designing the knitting and sewing patterns for their children's books. Eric Johnson has a BFA in commercial design from Kutztown University. After working for three decades as a signwriter, muralist, and graphic artist, he has really enjoyed returning to his childhood love of drawing by illustrating Phoebe's Sweater, Freddie's Blanket, Phoebe's Birthday, and Henry's Hat.

We are overjoyed to announce a new pattern collection, Emma Knits!

This project was designed in collaboration with Malabrigo Yarn Company and each of the six patterns features a different Malabrigo Yarn. This collection is available as an instant download eBook in our Etsy shop here.

You can read more about Joanna's design process for this collection over here on the Malabrigo website. Each pattern is inspired by the Jane Austen book, Emma, and is a modern interpretaion of traditional Regency-era fashions. Above you see Secret Engagement, a cropped long-sleeve jacket, and below, Village Ball, a cross-body shawl wrap.

Paton's Kroy Sock Yarn, 166 yards/50g, 75% wool, 25% nylon

Main Color Grey Marl, 2 (3) skeins

Contrast Color Muslin, 1 skein

Gauge

26 sts and 30 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on size US 2 1/2 needles

Needles

One set US 2 double pointed needles

One set US 2 1/2 double pointed needles

Notions

Yarn Needle

2 yards of waste yarn of the same weight as the sock yarn

Notes

These socks are knit from the top down on double pointed needles

Pattern

Cuff

Using contrast color and smaller needles, cast on 60 (72) sts. Being careful not to twist stitches, begin working in the round.

Needle 1: 16 (20) sts, Needle 2: 16 (20) sts, Needle 3: 28 (32) sts

Work in k2, p2 rib for 3 inches

Next round: decrease 4 stitches evenly across next round by working p2tog on purl stitches of ribbing, 56 (68) sts remain.

Leg

After this row, rearrange stitches as follows:

Needle 1: 14 (17) sts, Needle 2: 14 (17) sts, Needle 3: 28 (34) sts.

Switch to larger needles and main color yarn and work straight in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 3 inches.

Decrease round:

Needle 1: k1, ssk, knit to end of needle

Needle 2: knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1

Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1

4 stitches decreased. 52 (64) sts remain, Needle 1: 13 (16) sts, Needle 2: 13 (16) sts, Needle 3: 26 (32) sts.

Work straight in stockinette stitch until sock measures 8 (9) inches from cast on edge.

Repeat decrease round again, 4 sts decreased. 48 (60) sts remain, Needle 1: 12 (15) sts, Needle 2: 12 (15) sts, Needle 3: 24 (30) sts

Continue knitting straight in stockinette stitch until the sock measures 12 (14) inches from the cast on edge, or desired length from cuff to ankle bone.

Heel

Needle 1: knit, Needle 2: knit, Needle 3, with waste yarn, knit across needle. With empty needle, knit all of the stitches on needle 3 once more, using the main color yarn.

Foot

Knit straight in stockinette stitch in the round until the foot measures (starting with row of waste yarn) 3 inches less than the final desired length of the sock.

Change to contrast color.

Work decrease round as above, 4 sts decreased. 44 (56) sts.

Knit one round.

Repeat these two round until there are 16 (20) sts remaining.

Graft toe using kitchener stitch.

Heel

Pick up stitches on one side of the waste yarn as follows:

Needle 1: 12 (15) sts, Needle 2: 12 (15) sts.

On the other side of the waste yarn, pick up with Needle 3: 24 (30) sts. 48 (60) sts.

Carefully pick out the waste yarn, and now you have an secure opening to work the heel.

With contrast color, work 2 rounds straight.

Work decrease round as above, 4 sts decreased. 44 (56) sts.

Knit one round.

Repeat these two round until there are 16 (20) sts remaining.

Graft heel using kitchener stitch.

All of the yarn colors used in Little Women Knits were hand dyed by Rachel at Six and Seven Fiber. She is offering lovely knitting kits on her website featuring the ten colors used for the book, which can be knit up into the fun colorwork cowl seen below.

The cowl features a classic houndstooth stranded knitting pattern, reimagined in pairs of hand-dyed colors that play off one another beautifully. It is a modern retelling of a traditional pattern and shows off Rachel's colors beautifully!

This new pattern drops today! The Anne Of Green Gables Sampler is designed to showcase the gorgeous Anne of Green Gables mini-skein set hand dyed by Six and Seven Fiber.
