Find a Company With A Product You Love

Too many people get caught up in the hype of potential big income from MLM, that they don't pay enough attention to what the company is asking you to sell. You can’t sell something or share your business if you don’t genuinely have pride in what you are representing. MLMers often stick to the three-foot rule (everyone within 3-feet of you is a prospect) and other traditional marketing tactics. But direct sales is like any other business. It can and should be marketed in a variety of ways that take into consideration your target market, what it needs, how you can help it, and where it can be found. To that end, you can use a variety of marketing tools including a website (check your companies policies about websites), email, and social media to increase product sales and interest in your business.

Stand Out from Other Distributors

One of the challenges of MLM is convincing prospects to buy or join with you as opposed to the other reps that live in the neighborhood or they know online. You're selling the same stuff as thousands of others, meaning consumers have a choice. You need to do something that makes you unique compared to everyone else. Give people a reason to choose you over other reps. Some options include more personalized service, starting your own rewards program, or something that offers greater value.

Develop a System for Following Up

While you don't want to pester and annoy people, in many cases, with good follow up, you can make the sale or recruit at a future time. Sales is often about timing, and 'no' in sales doesn't always mean 'never.'

If someone tells you no, but there was something in the dialogue that suggested they might be interested in the future, ask if you can put them on your mailing or email list, or if you can call in six months to follow up. Many will give you their email or phone number just because they want to be nice. Even so, use your calendar or contact system to remind you when to call.

How "network marketing" or "mlm" business is good for your future?

With the exception of working for a large corporation, in my 27 year career I've worked in a family business that for a period of time was a small local franchise, I've owned a commercial real estate company and I now own a network marketing business and I've got to say without any reservation that network marketing is the best business model by far and here's why.

1. Low Risk. Very often the barrier to entry in business ownership is lack of start up capital. When my Dad began franchising his retail business in 1976 the franchise fee was $50,000 and 2% of gross revenue plus the franchisee had to buy all store fixtures and inventory and sign independently of the franchiser on a 5+ year lease; all told the franchisee was on the hook for a minimum $500,000 before opening their door as the proud (and in debt) owner of an Englunds Apparel for Men franchise. When you compare it to the risk of being an owner in network marketing well...relatively speaking there is very little risk and I call this aspect a blessing for those with financial limitations or low risk tolerance and a curse because often with little risk comes a less than committed mindset. Heck, my investment in my commercial real estate company exceeded $100,000 and my network marketing business was $399 - less than dinner (and drinks) for four at Sullivan's Steakhouse or Capital Grille - so I could have easily approached it with a "let's give it a try" attitude rather than a "I'm going to give it everything I've got" approach when there's more financial skin in the game.

2. Time Flexibility. In the eyes of every network marketing company (and the IRS) when you enroll in your business you are your own boss (a.k.a. Form 1099 or Independent Contractor) so the amount of time you choose to invest in your business is completely yours to decide. Many fit it into the nooks and crannies of their life - calls driving to/from work, an hour or two in the evening or some dedicated time on weekends. Time flexibility is imperative for those who have a job (or jobs) and full time commitments to an employer as well as other responsibilities such as family.

3. Proven System. Much like a franchise has a proven system for the franchisee to plug into, learn and succeed; a solid network marketing business will offer a step by step system to teach people how to grow their business. The company programs should include tools, training and teamwork to support the goals and ambitions of the new associate. For those people who have never been a business owner, a step by step "how to" is critical because they don't know the first thing about running a business and the experience of the company owners and teammates is invaluable.

4. Leverage or Scale. When I started my commercial real estate company it was my goal as the owner to leverage my position, bring on a small handful of other brokers then teach, train and mentor them so they would go out and duplicate my efforts by leasing and selling commercial properties. In network marketing the scale-ability of the business is often simple (I did't say easy), in that the typical barriers to entry (lack of money, time, etc) are very low or non existent and the system (tools, training & support) is in place for the new associate to plug into and leverage. Leverage in network marketing is no different than what I created with my real estate company or virtually any other type of business from corporate America with it's ocean of employees down to the small business owner with only a few staff - getting paid on the efforts of others is one of the appealing aspects and benefits of business ownership.

5. Residual Income. One of my best friends (I'll leave him unnamed in case one of his clients are reading this) is a wealth management adviser and I've always said I want to be him when I grow up because I've seen the incredible time freedom he's got because his income is recurring or residual. You see, as my friend invests his clients money and the market goes to work with that money (leverage), my buddy is paid by his client every month. Most of us work in a business where our income is directly tied to our ability to perform so we're either paid an hourly wage, a salary or commission and if at some point we can't work our wage, salary or commissioned job our income goes away if not immediately, eventually. In network marketing residual income is potentially and huge and life changing benefit - to do something once and get paid over and over, month after month and year after year is admittedly really nice even if the residual is a few hundred dollars per month to cover some recurring (residual) bills like electric, cable or cell phone.

Understand that network marketing isn't perfect (what business model is) but in the U.S. alone the industry generated in excess of $32 billion in revenue (2014) so there's no denying its viability and legitimacy and many well known 'traditional' companies like Amazon are leveraging this marketing model by offering people a financial incentive to share their product or service; by example, over 50% of Amazons' revenue is generated by affiliate marketers.

However, I do believe the industry is misunderstood by many whose perspective is based largely on the experiences of others who quite frankly, for reasons stated above and then some, probably didn't take their business seriously, chalked it up to the cost of an expensive meal or had illusions of grandeur that by simply enrolling they were going to make a lot of money and maybe even get rich - sorry to tell you network marketing is not like winning the lottery. Well, as a full time network marketer who sold his traditional business to be here, let me tell you that like any other form of business ownership there is a lot of work in netWORK marketing but the rewards for being consistent, having a long term view and taking full advantage of the available tools, training and support make it well worth every minute I've invested.

Some of the most respected and successful people in the world have invested in network marketing businesses (Warren Buffet, Donald Trump, the Perot family and Darwin Deason, to name a few) because they recognize the industry is exploding and it's future looks incredibly bright. They also understand that when you marry the hope of an individual with a professional platform for fostering their goals and dreams, it's an extremely powerful combination for personal and professional growth.

Network Marketing or MLM Business is great opportunity for everyone

Forever living product international. Avon. Amway. Herbalife.Mary Kay.Natura.You know the names.

Some of these direct selling companies are companies you’ve grown up with and even companies your mother grew up with. You probably have some of their products in your own kitchen and bathroom – and if not, you certainly know someone who does.

These are definitely companies that are around and get around.

They’re also companies that are extremely profitable. The six companies named above, six of the top direct sales companies in the world, made $27.3 billion in 2017. (forever living product international topped the 2018 DirectSellingNews Global 100 List , making $8.60 billion all by itself.)

But does that mean that becoming a direct seller for a company such as Amway or Avon is a good business for you to get into?

Here’s what you need to know about direct sales and Network Marketing MLM (Multilevel Marketing) so you can make an informed decision.

Network Marketing Industry Has Great Advantages

Unlike many businesses, there are absolutely no entry barriers to direct sales.

You don’t need any particular level or education or training.

You don’t need to do it full time or even any set number of hours per week.

You can do it from your home

It’s inexpensive to get into. Normally all you need to do to get started is purchase a starter kit of products; some companies offer these to new sellers for as little as $35, although most in my informal survey run from $99 to $150. Some companies even offer a range of starter kits for beginning representatives. Avon, for instance, offers people starting out a choice of a $25, $50 or $100 starter kit.

Direct Sales and MLM or Network Marketing Are Not the Same Things

Direct sales describes the business model

where independent contractors (or representatives or distributors) sell a company’s products and/or services directly to consumers. They might do this through door-to-door sales, through the internet or by having parties in their homes. There is no fixed retail location, although often direct sellers work out of their homes.

Now I could copy and paste the paragraph above to describe MLM (Multilevel Marketing) or Network Marketing.

It too is a business model where independent contractors sell a company’s products and/or services directly to consumers. The difference is that in the MLM business model, the independent contractors also make money from recruiting others to work for the company.

So if you work for an MLM or network marketing company, you make money from your sales but also from the sales of your recruits and the recruits of your recruits – your downline. (Thus the term “multilevel”.)

Many direct sales companies are MLM companies, including the aforementioned flp(forever living product international) and Avon.

If you’re thinking of working for a direct sales company, you can see the advantage; it’s a whole extra income stream that could increase your revenue substantially.

But…

Beware! Some MLMs May Be Pyramid Schemes

That’s exactly why some unscrupulous fraudsters have latched onto the MLM business model and used it to create pyramid schemes

MLM is perfectly legal in both the U.S. and INDIA.

Pyramid schemes are not.

Legally the core difference between MLMs and pyramid schemes is that MLM companies make money off selling products and/or services; pyramid schemes make money off you.

In other words, the main focus of a pyramid scheme is to get you to put your money in and recruit others to do the same, rather than on moving product or services.

If you are in any doubt that an MLM company you are interested in is a legitimate company or an illegal pyramid scam, ask these six questions. And if the answers to any of the questions are dodgy, stuff your wallet back in your purse or pocket and run – it’s a chance to go to jail, not to make money.

You Could Make a Lot of Money

By working for a legitimate MLM or direct sales company, though, you could make a great deal of money.

In her book Second-Act Careers, Nancy Collamer tells the story of Karen Pagliurolo, a former nurse and stay-at-home mom, who now makes a fortune as a regional manager and sales consultant for the high-end direct sales fashion company Etcetera, hosting trunk shows four times a year in the basement of her home in Winchester, Mass.

What kind of fortune? A Herbalife consultant on the president’s team can earn as much as $480,000, the nutrition-supplement seller says on its website. But that’s a reality for only 0.3% of their sellers, Herbalife’s statement of typical compensation notes.

And there is a millionaire Avon lady, Debbie Davis in the UK.The Daily Mail reported that she and her partner earned £1.4-million in 2010 - making them the make-up company's top earners in the UK for the fifth year running.

Many MLM companies also offer top sellers bonuses such as Mary Kay’s famous pink Cadillacs.

But You Might Not

However, as Ms. Collamer says herself in Can You Really Make Money in newtork marketing or mlm?(Forbes), “most people who go into direct sales aren’t as successful”.

And in fact, according to the Direct Selling Association, the median annual income for direct sales consultants in 2011 was $2,400.

In 2017, 50% of those who received earnings from Herbalife earned less than US$370 a year, while just 10% made US$6,965 a year, according to the company. And according to Herbalife, less than 15% of their distributors in the US earned any money from them.

To be fair, though, not everyone who has signed on with a direct sales company as a contractor or consultant is actually doing it to make money. Some have become consultants just so they can buy the goods or services themselves at a discount. Internal consumption, as it’s called, is common in direct selling and MLM companies. Even extremely active sellers normally use what they’re selling.

How Much Work Are You Prepared to Put Into Your Network Marketing Industry or MLM Business?

The true answer to the “how much money will I make?” question depends on you.

What are your business goals?

Are you just looking to make a few extra bucks so you can supplement your income? Or do you want your direct sales to provide your main income? Or something in between?

That’s one of the attractions of direct sales; how well you do depends on your own efforts.

You Have to Like Selling

Direct sales is not for the shy and retiring. You have to be willing to get out there. And no, not just out there as in onto the internet. As in face-to-face, person-to-person, door-to-door. That’s how 72% of direct sales happened in 2016 according to the Direct Selling Association

Unless you are blessed with thousands of friends, you have to be the kind of person who is comfortable conversing with strangers.

And you have to learn how to sell to them, which involves a lot more than just knocking on someone’s door and saying, “Hi. I’m ________________. Would you like to buy some lipstick?”

(If you’re not cringing right now, that’s a good sign. Sales skills can be learned as long as you’re willing to do it.)

The advantages of direct sales are hard to beat, especially for people who want to work flexible hours.
