Dwight Howard's season in Orlando is over

Howard will undergo back surgery Friday morning in Los Angeles to repair a herniated disk, effectively ending his season and eliminating him from participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics, Howard’s agent said Thursday night.

Howard has been complaining of back problems since early March, but it wasn’t until Los Angeles-based spine surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins examined him last week that the herniated disk was discovered.

Howard received an epidural to alleviate the pain at that time and the plan was that he’d rest and rehabilitate his back for 10-14 days before deciding if he could return to play or further treatment might be necessary.
But his back has worsened and both Watkins and the Magic’s medical staff determined that surgery is necessary.

Dan Fegan, Howard’s agent, said he hopes this development debunks any thoughts that Howard’s back problem was not serious and that he was utilizing it as an excuse not to play.
A report out of Orlando said that Howard told Magic owner Rich DeVos in a recent phone call that he did not intend to play again for Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, who put Howard in an awkward situation by announcing that management informed him his All-Star center had asked that he be fired. Fegan, along with other sources, have disputed that report.

The 10 best Laker basketball players of all time include some of the best players in the sport. The Lakers started as the Detroit Gems in 1946, but the team moved to Minneapolis in 1947. The team's name comes from the Minnesota state name, "the Land of 10,0000 Lakes."

Kobe Bryant. Like his attitude or not, Laker legend Kobe Bryant is headed for Laker fame as one of the ten best Laker basketball players of all time. Bryant's rise from high school to the big leagues was meteoric and included the highest scoring total ever by a high-school recruit in any game. Bryant's been an NBA All Star a number of times beginning in 1998.

Magic Johnson. Earvin "Magic" Johnson lead the league in assists for five seasons, holds the second greatest NBA records for assists, and helped the Dream Team to the NBA championship five seasons. Magic captured the league MVP three times and made the NBA All Star team twelve times. Magic is also a member of the NBA's 50 greatest players and the top of the 10 best Laker basketball players of all time.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Playing as Lew Alcindor in the first few years, Abul-Jabbar moved from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Lakers for the 1976 season. "Kaaaarreeeem!" is the NBA's all time scorer and his Sky Hook held the Laker team record for 11 seasons in a row. Abdul-Jabbar was elected NBA MVP a total of six times, a record, played in 19 NBA All-Star Games and is also one of he NBA's 50 greatest players of all time.

Jerry West. Player and then coach, West's retired number "44" hangs in Staple Center. West holds the fourth all-time scoring average record, second playoff scoring record and lead his team as the leading scorer in seven seasons. These facts, not to mention his membership on the NBA All-Star team ten times, put West on the 10 best Laker basketball players of all time list. West also was listed by the NBA as one of the leagues greatest players.

Wilt Chamberlain. Center Wilt Chamberlain was part of the Lakers 1972 that won 33 straight wins, a record win streak for professional sports. His retired jersey, number 13, also hangs in Lakerville. Chamberlain played in 13 All-Star games and lead the league in scoring and rebounding during the same season five times. With all the stats, Chamberlain is not only one of the 10 best Lakers basketball players of all time, he's one of the NBA's greatest players, according to the NBA powers that be.

Shaquille O'Neal. The Shack Attack signed as a free agent with LA in 1996 and assisted the team in winning three consecutive championships.

Elgin Baylor. Playing with the number 22, Baylor holds Laker records for most rebounds and played as an NBA All-Star eleven times. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 1976, as well as earning a spot on the NBA greatest player ever list.

Gail Goodrich. Goodrich holds Laker records for consecutive free throws and is among the franchise leader for point, assists, free throws and games played. In addition to standing as one of the best Laker basketball players of all time, Baylor played in four consecutive All Star Games as a Laker and was inducted in the NBA Hall of Fame in 1996. He passed the youngest player to score 14,000 point record in the 2004-05 season.

James Worthy. Worthy retired from the Lakers in 1995 and his "42" jersey was also retired. Hall of Famer Worthy assisted three Laker teams to MBA Championships during the 1980s. He holds Laker records in steals, field goals and scoring. Worthy got the nod from the NBA as one of the 50 greatest to play the game and is also one of the 10 best Laker basketball players of all time.

Bob McAdoo. Hall of Famer McAdoo played for the Lakers for five years until traded in 1986. He helped the team win NBA titles in 1982 and 1985.

EL DORADO - Poetic justice in a tragic form took place on July 4, 1502. A fleet of 32 caravels had assembled at Santo Domingo four days before, making ready to sail for Spain. Among the passengers on Antgonio de Torres' flagship, El Dorado, was the scheming Bobadilla who had imprisoned Columbus two years earlier. By coincidence, their paths crossed again when Columbus put in at Santa Domingo on his return from a voyage. He didn't like the feel of the heavy, still atmosphere, recognizing the familiar forwarning of hurricane. He told Bobadilla as much, but his advice was scorned. Perhaps Bobadilla remembered the navigator's warning four days later as he struggled for his life in the watery fury of the worst hurricane ever recorded at that time. During twelve hours of July 4, its cyclonic winds and massive waves tore the flota to shreds, swamping a dozen of the ships in the Mona Passage and breaking most of the rest against the shores of Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, and Mona islands. Only five lived through the day. Twenty-seven caravels, among them El Dorado, were lost with over 500 lives, including Bobadilla's. There was treasure, in quantity, on the destroyed ships. Perhaps half of its gold nuggets and dust, and pearls, had been stowed aboard El Dorado. The single richest item was a solid gold table, reputed to weigh 1.5 tons, through which Bobadilla intended to express his gratitude to the Catholic Kings for his appointment as governor.

The flagship was believed to have gone down in the Mona Passage, where depths of 1000 feet are encountered. No trace of its wreckage was discovered during the salvage work along the coasts after the seas had subsided. Much was recovered from wrecks which had been thrown up on reefs and beaches, but at least $3,000,000 (note: value was in 1962) in gold and pearls was gone. If accounts of Bobadilla's 3310-pound golden table were true, about $2,000,000 in treasure lie in the remanants of El Dorado, way down under Mona Passage. Some of the other wrecks against the coasts, partly salvaged or beyond reach of 1500 Indian skin divers, might make worthwhile targets for modern SCUBA-diving skin divers, but El Dorado and her treasures will probably never be found.

FLOR DE LA MAR - Wrecked in 1511, the Portuguese had a field day when they overran the ancient kingdom of Malacca in present-day Malaysia after its sultan declined a request for permission to trade there. Admiral Alfonso d'Albuquerque's men spent three days sacking the city and relieving it of 60 tons of gold booty plus the sultan's throne - not to mention his ingots and coinage - and more than 200 chests of diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. The admiral called it "the richest treasure on earth that I have ever seen," and loaded it aboard the Flor de la Mar. The Portuguese didn't get far with it, though; she went down in a storm off the northern coast of Sumatra along with riches estimated to be worth $1.7 to $3 billion.

NEW SPAIN FLEET - In 1567, before the New Spain Flota of Captain-General Juan Velasco de Barrio sailed from Veracruz for Spain it received word that there were two English fleets waiting to intercept the flota-one near Havana and the other near the mouth of the Bahama Channel. To protect the treasure they decided to sail back to Spain by a very unusual route. Hugging the coast of Yucatan they turned south, passing south of Jamaica. They planned to sail toward the Virgin Islands, then head directly for Spain. However, when nearing Puerto Rico they were struck by a bad storm and forced to run before it. Six of the major ships of the flota, carrying over 3 million pesos in treasure were wrecked near the northwest tip of Dominica. The lost ships were: the Capitana, San Juan, 150 tons, Captain Benito de Santana; the Almiranta, Santa Barbola, 150 tons, Captain Vicencio Garullo; galleon San Felipe, 120 tons, Captain Juan Lopez de Sosa; nao El Espiritu Santo, 120 tons, Captain Juan de Rosales; and two unidentified naos of 120 tons each. Due to the storm, none of the other ships in the flota could stop to pick up the treasure or the survivors, most of whom reached shore, where they were all cruelly massacred by the Carib Indians.

NAU CHAGAS - Sunk on June 13th, 1594, the Portuguese carrack (merchant ship) Nau Chagas was returning home from the East Indies in June of 1594 bulging with treasure that included bounty rescued from two other wrecked ships. 3,500,000 cruzadoes, plus an unknown number of chests of diamonds, rubies and pearls. The overloaded vessel sailed into the Azores to replenish stocks, pulled out the next day, and came under protracted attack by four English warships. She went down in deep waters about 18 miles south of the channel between Pico and Fayal, in the Azores. The riches that sank with her is believed to have been thousands of tons of the richest cargo (including diamonds, rubies, and pearls) ever to leave an Asian port. Reputed value more than 1 Billion US Dollars.

NEUSTRA SENORA DE BEGONA, SANTO DOMINGO, SAN AMBROSIO & SAN ROQUE - The seven galleons of the Terra Firma Fleet left Cartagena in January 1605, confident that it was well past the hurricane season, and headed north toward Havana. As the fleet passed the Serranilla banks, halfway between Jamaica and Yucatan, a surprise storm struck. One ship was able to make it back to Cartagena, two pressed on and found shelter in Jamaica, but four galleons-carrying by some estimates about eight million pesos worth of gold, silver and emeralds went down on the Serranilla Banks. All of the crew and passengers, some 1,300 people in all were lost.

SANTISSIMA TRINIDAD - In 1616, Santissima Trinidad, a Spanish Manila Galleon, on her way to Acapulco, went down in a typhoon, somewhere around the Osumi Strait, off the southern extremity of Japan. Her cargo is estimated to have been 3,000,000 pesos (94 tons of coins).

MERCHANT ROYAL - Possibly the greatest hoard of sunken treasure still waiting to be found on the seabed around Great Britain is that which went down in the Merchant Royal, of Dartmouth, on 23 September, 1641. Returning to England with a king's ransom in Spanish treasure, her sinking in bad weather was witnessed by another vessel in company which reported the location as "ten leagues from Land's End". Carrying thirty-six bronze cannon, a crew of eighty and a few passengers under the command of Captain John Limbrey, in her hold lay "£300,000 in silver, £100,000 in gold, and as much again in jewel." Wooden chests held perhaps more than half a million Spanish silver pesos, 500 heavy bars of gold and thick ingots of silver, rubies, emeralds, diamonds and pearls by the hundreds, and heavy pieces of jewelry set with precious stones. Loss of the ship made news throughout maritime Europe. From the official London Gazette to the financial paper Mercurische Courant in Amsterdam, the reports alerted horrified merchants and financiers, who had expected to receive their jewels, silver, gold, laces and spices.

SAN FRANCISCO XAVIER - In 1656, the San Francisco Xavier was lost in Spain's Bay of Cadiz. After battling with an English squadron, she made for port and just before reaching her destination, blew up. She went down with more than 2,000,000 pesos (63 tons of coins).

LA VIERGE DU BON PORT - This East Indiaman is probably one of the richest French vessel ever lost at sea and never found. The La Vierge du Bon Port was bought in Saint Malo in 1664, armed with 30 cannons and 300 tons of cargo space. Her captain, Truchot de la Chesnaie, from Saint Malo also, was commanding this vessel on a special order from the Minister Colbert, a dedicated Minister for the Marine Affairs, appointed by Louis XIV, the Sun King.

At this time, France was far from the main European military power on land and sea. This mission was the first expedition to Madagascar for the creation of a strong colony on the island, under the privileged of the newly created French East India Company. For this purpose, four ships were being prepared in Le Havre, La Rochelle and Saint Malo and gathered together at Brest for a cost to the Company of more than 500,000 Livres.

With 230 elite crew and 288 passengers (soldiers, high rank civil servants, etc.), the little squadron left Brest on 7 of March 1665, and reach Madagascar on the 10th of July, for the "Le Saint Paul" and at the end of August, "Le Taureau" and "La Vierge du Bon Port" also reach their destination. The goals for this first expedition, were principally to send to France, in the shortest times, a ship fully loaded with a large variety of samples which could be found in Madagascar and the islands in its vicinity. It was vital to show to everybody a first good result for the future expeditions.

On the 20th of February 1666, the ship "La Vierge du Bon Port", full of goods and merchandise, was ready to sails on a voyage back to Le Havre, in France. Unfortunately, several month later, on the 9th of July, her voyage almost completed, she was attacked by an English corsair and sunk off Guernsey, with her 120 crew, the remaining survivors taken as prisoners and brought to England. With this event, perished all hopes for a rich colony to be raised and the commercial loss resulting from this expedition was immense, as all her treasures were lost forever. She sank fast, and thirty six English crewmen drowned while trying to save the treasure.

Although the initial report valued her cargo and contents at £1,500,000, a Channel Islander stated that this was a gross underestimate, since one chest alone of precious stones known to be aboard was valued at £40,000, and ambergris and other things were equal to a further £400,000. No record exists of any salvage on the wreck, so her remains probably lie on the seabed near the Channel Isles, awaiting discovery by some future generation of treasure seekers or salvage divers.

ISABELA - Somewhere south of Cape Santa Maria, Portugal, is the hull of the 600 ton Isabela, perhaps five miles from shore at a depth of 400 feet. The galleon, part of Duke de Veragua's armada of 1672, capsized and foundered there en route to Seville during a tempest. Her captain, Juan de Ugarte, and all 400 aboard were drowned. There is something like $1,000,000 in Colombian and Peruvian gold lying in the her waterlogged beams and ribs.

SOLEIL D'ORIENT - A vessel of the French East India Company, 1000 tons, one of the three most important and richest shipwrecks in the world. The 'Soleil d'Orient' set sail in 1681 with gifts from the King of Siam (Thailand) to King Louis XIV of France, the Pope, wife of the eldest son of Louis XIV, Duke of Burgundy, Duke of Anjou, Marquis of Croissy, Marquis of Sergnelay, Abbot of Choisy; three ambassadors and 20 valets accompanied the gifts including 60 crates of royal magnificent presents; major gifts from M. Constance and King of Bantam (including 'hundreds of diamonds') were also part of the cargo. Most accounts say she hit land and broke up near the southeast tip of Madagascar, so the wreckage may be in shallow water. Inside, the first to find it will discover a 1,000-piece gold dinner set (a gift from the Emperor of Japan), as well as silver, and porcelain. Some of the porcelain was a gift from the Chinese emperor, so the historical value is enormous.

HMS SUSSEX - On December 27, 1693, a mighty fleet of 166 merchant vessels and more than 40 men-of-war gathered off Portsmouth. At their head was the pride of the Royal Navy: HMS Sussex, an 80-gun ship of the line launched just eight months earlier, to destroy the forces of Britain's enemy, those of Louis XIV, the Sun King.

All but the lowliest crew member among the ship's company of 560 or so had some idea of where they were heading: to trading ports around the coasts of Lebanon and Turkey. In the privacy of his cabin, however, as the Sussex prepared to set sail, Admiral Sir Francis Wheeler was contemplating the envelope that contained his secret orders. On behalf of William III, and amid utmost secrecy, Admiral Wheeler was to bribe the Duke of Savoy with the gold to keep him in the Nine Years' War with France, and allow the Grand Alliance to attack Louis XIV through his weakly-defended southern border.

But the gold never reached the Duke. A day out of Gibraltar, the Sussex was caught in a gale that sprang from nowhere, and grew to an unprecedented ferocity. In modern parlance, it came close to being "the perfect storm," of the kind seen only once in 100 years. In the early morning gloom on February 19, 1694, as the log of HMS Carlisle recorded: "The Admiral was foundered and not a soul saved but two Turks." Somewhere in the bowels of the ship were iron chests packed with gold and silver coins, worth £1 million in the 17th century, and much, much more now - some estimates have suggested £2.6 billion.

The Beginning of the NBA

Like all other sports events, the National Basketball Association was born out of a group of people's passion for basketball. In 1946, a group of sports arena owners founded the Basketball Association of America. It became the first basketball league, which has games in huge arenas found in large cities.

At the Hotel Commodore in New York on June 6, 1946, a group of basketball team owners met to talk about a league — the Basketball Association of America — they hoped to start. These were men who controlled the sports and entertainment arenas in big cities; today's owners are mostly businessmen.

With World War II over, the owners felt Americans were ready to spend dollars on entertainment and sports. College basketball was already an incredible success, and the owners hoped they could convince some of the college stars to be part of a professional league. On June 11, two conferences were formeE: the Western Conference, made up of the Pittsburgh Ironmen, Chicago Stags, Detroit Falcons, St. Louis Bombers, and Cleveland Rebels; and the Eastern Conference, made up of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Providence Steamrollers, Washington Capitols, New York Knickerbockers, and Toronto Huskies.

It cost each owner $10,000 to start a basketball franchise in his city. Part of that fee went to a lawyer named Maurice Podoloff, who became president of the BAA. Maurice had a background in hockey — just the opposite of today's National Hockey League Commissioner, Gary Bettman, who used to be a high-ranking NBA administrator.

The first game was scheduled for November 1, just five months away, and the rules were based largely on those from the college game. However, rather than play two halves, the pro league decided to go with four 12-minute quarters. With timeouts, halftimes, and other time stoppages, the evening entertainment would stretch to two hours, something owners felt was important to their customers. Though zone defenses were prevalent in college, the owners decided that no zone defense would be allowed for at least the first year. They were afraid the zone defense would slow down the game, so they allowed only man-to-man defense.

Three of the most famous sports arenas were commonly called the Garden. The first basketball game was played in Toronto's hockey rink, Maple Leaf Gardens, but NBA fans probably know the current New York Knicks home is Madison Square Garden. The Celtics played in the Boston Garden, which was demolished in 1997 and replaced by the TD Garden.

To get local fans and to keep travel costs down, teams selected players from local colleges. Providence took players from Rhode Island colleges, Knicks' players came from New York, and Pittsburgh looked for players within a 100-mile radius of the city. The only exception was Toronto, which had just one Canadian player among its mostly American roster. The contracts were very modest compared to the multimillion dollar deals of today.

The first professional basketball game was played in Canada in 1946. The Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens, home of the famous Canadian hockey team the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The opening game had 7,090 fans, and the Knicks won an exciting 68-66 contest. There was no 24-second shot clock, so teams were in no hurry to score, which explains the low point total compared to today's NBA game.

The league had seventeen franchises that were found in cities and in various sports venues all over the country. In 1950, the NBA's number of franchises went down to 11 and it continued to go down to as low as eight by 1954.

These are the Celtics, Knicks, Lakers, Warriors, Kings, 76ers, Hawks, and Pistons. But while contracting during the 1960s, the NBA's small franchises shifted to big ones found in large cities. Some of these shifters were Minneapolis Lakers who moved to Los Angeles Lakers, Syracuse Nationals to Philadelphia, and Philadelphia Warriors to San Francisco.

Stan Van Gundy :Dwight Howard wants me out

Stan Van Gundy said he knows his franchise player, Dwight Howard, has asked that he be fired as coach of the Orlando Magic, and get this: Van Gundy claimed his sources are better than any reporter's.

"I was told it was true by people in our management," Van Gundy said Thursday, just hours before the Magic lost to the New York Knicks 96-80. "So right from the top."

In what had to be one of the most bizarre game-day scenes in NBA history, Van Gundy confirmed a WKMG-TV report that Howard is pushing for his ouster, and did so right before the center walked through a circle of news media members and embraced his coach.

"They haven't told me anything," Van Gundy said of Orlando management, "and they don't need to. I'm the coach right now, and I'm the coach until they decide I'm not the coach. It's 12:02 right now. If they want to fire me at 12:05, I'll go home and find something to do. I'll have a good day."

Clearly unaware of the stunning claim Van Gundy had made, Howard suddenly appeared at his side and put his right arm around the coach.

"Stan, we're not worried about that, right?" Howard asked.

"That's what I just said," Van Gundy responded. "We've got to be worried about winning games."

Howard and Van Gundy exchanged a little small talk about the Knicks game before the coach asked reporters: "Are you guys done with me? You talk to him now."

I'm the coach right now, and I'm the coach until they decide I'm not the coach. It's 12:02 right now. If they want to fire me at 12:05, I'll go home and find something to do. I'll have a good day.

Derrick Rose’s injury officially worse than he thought

Derrick Rose now admits that his groin injury was worse than he originally thought. This comes after missing 10 straight games and still having yet to push himself beyond some light running on the court. Yes, he remains without a timetable for a return, and Rose could only say Sunday that he does expect to be back before the end of the regular season.

Rose looks like a drop in default h2h leagues - he's certainly not going to help anyone this week, and the Bulls have just three games during next week's default finals, and Rose wont play big minutes in the initial stages of his return, whenever that happens to be. C.J. Watson will continue to start in Rose's place. He's averaged an inconsistent 12.6 points, 1.8 threes, 4.2 assists, and 1.1 steals in his 18 starts on the season.

Jeremy Lin will miss the rest of the regular season because he needs knee surgery that will sideline him six weeks and could leave the Knicks without their star point guard in the playoffs - if they make it that far.
Lin had an MRI exam this week that revealed a small, chronic meniscus tear and he has elected to have surgery next week in New York.
With the regular season ending April 26, the biggest story in basketball this season is done unless the Knicks make a deep postseason run.

Speaking slowly during a pregame press conference, Lin was unable to hide his disappointment with the decision that was reached earlier Saturday after a painful workout.

"It (stinks) not being able to be out there with the team," he said.

Upcoming: Lin-surgery.

He was barely holding on to a place in the NBA back in February. Now, after the back-to-back Sports Illustrated covers and popularity around the world, and now it's over.

"If this was done very early in the year, obviously ... I don't know where my career would be. I could be, would be definitely without a job and probably fighting for a summer league spot," Lin said. "But having said that, this happening now hurts just as much, because all the players, we really put our heart and souls into the team and into season, and to not be there when it really matters most is hard."

The Knicks will continue to turn to Baron Davis in place of Lin, the undrafted Harvard alum who became the starter in February and turned in a series of brilliant performances, kicking off a phenomenon that was called Linsanity.

As I write this I still feel a lot of frustration regarding my Indian Wells semi-final. I felt like I was playing very well and had a good chance to win it when I became injured. I know it’s part of the sport, and it’s probably the most difficult part!

It’s harder to deal with than losses really, because you feel like you didn’t get the chance to test yourself properly.

Still, there are obviously a lot of positives to take away from this tournament. I really love Indian Wells! It’s one of the tournaments where I always seem to do well and enjoy myself so much.

The tournament is so well organized. I have some friends who sometimes visit and they also love it. If I were a fan and not a player, this is the tournament I would always try to go to, along with the Australian Open.

Playing three top 10 players in a row – Wozniacki, Bartoli and Sharapova – was a lot of fun. I’ve missed that feeling of competing regularly against the top players, but I am confident I will be experiencing it again in the not too distant future. I am definitely moving in the right direction and I think I’m just about top 10 according to results this year only.

Fortunately my injury, a glute strain, doesn’t seem serious and I was told by the doctors that I should be okay for Miami next week. I’ll work hard with my physio over the next few days to do everything possible to get fit.

Assuming I stay healthy, the next few months are full of opportunities for me. I will play five events during the clay court season: I’ve decided to add Stuttgart to my schedule, and the weekend that before I will play Fed Cup in Russia.

Houston Rockets Center, Marcus Camby, got a rebound of a Sacremento Kings failed lay-up and then because of the time running down, he threw up a hail mary full court shot that ended up going in. The fans of the Houston Rockets’ Toyota Center became ecstatic after witnessing their big man hit a full court shot.

However after further review, the referees would see that the ball was still in Camby’s hands as he released it and as a result the basket wouldn’t count.

Knicks lose Amare Stoudemire indefinitely to back injury

Amare Stoudemire has a bulging disk in his back and is out indefinitely, a damaging blow to the New York Knicks with a month left in the regular season.

The Knicks weren't competitive in the playoffs last year when Stoudemire developed a back problem, and any hopes of even qualifying for the post-season are in jeopardy now that he has another one.

"You don't wish it on any player, especially Amare, who's a big part of what we do," Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson said Monday before the Knicks played the Milwaukee Bucks. "All we can is just hope that it's not as serious as it may be and that he has a speedy recovery."

Stoudemire sat out the fourth quarter of the Knicks' victory over Detroit on Saturday after he said his back tightened up. He said after the game he wasn't concerned and believed he would play Monday.

However, he didn't attend the Knicks' morning shootaround and had an MRI in the afternoon that revealed the injury. The Knicks said he doesn't need surgery and the injury will be treated with rehabilitation.

Point guard Jeremy Lin is also out because of a sore right knee, but Stoudemire's injury is the greater concern.

"He's a big piece of our puzzle," Woodson said. "I mean, we rely on Amare to do a lot of things, scoring and rebounding and playing defence for us."

Stoudemire was finally playing well recently. He struggled for the first half of this season, having not been able to play much during the off-season after injuring his back warming up for Game 2 of what became a first-round sweep against the Boston Celtics.

Chicago Bulls secure Play off 16 games before them

Luol Deng's buzzer-beater in overtime gave Chicago a 102-101 victory over the Toronto Raptors at the United Center on Saturday as the Bulls earned their fourth consecutive win and their NBA-leading 40th of the season Deng made a put-back shot for the Bulls as time expired after James Johnson blocked C.J. Watson's shot. The play was reviewed by the officials to confirm Deng had released the ball prior to the buzzer.

"I saw the light after I shot it, but I still wasn't sure how close it was," Deng told reporters. "Toronto played great. And we just found a way to win."
With the score tied at 100-100, the Raptors (16-33) missed three of four foul shots in the final 15 seconds to give the Bulls their opportunity.

"We had every excuse in the world to lay down and give in to a good team like Chicago," said Raptors coach Dwane Casey, who was without guards DeMar DeRozan and Jerryd Bayless.
"But our guys played with heart and with toughness, and I promised them if we continue to play like that and we get some more guns in, that style of play will win the NBA."

The Raptors charged to a 30-20 first quarter lead and after squandering the advantage early in the second they got their noses back in front 55-50 at halftime.
The Raptors missed three consecutive shots for the win in the final 10 seconds of regulation, setting up overtime.

"They (Raptors) deserved it, They were playing a lot harder than we were," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.
"I have a problem with the way we played. It's everybody. It starts with me. I have to do a better job of having them ready."

Carlos Boozer led the Bulls (40-10) with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Deng also registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

League MVP Derrick Rose missed his sixth consecutive game and the Bulls were without Joakim Noah in the second half after he was ejected for two technical fouls in the second quarter.
Johnson and Jose Calderon led the Raptors with 20 points each and Gary Forbes had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Fernando Alonso and Ferrari 1st win this seasson

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso won a dramatic Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, giving the Italian team one of its more unlikely victories in its long history.

In a race that was stopped for 51 minutes due to rain, Alonso looked like he'd be overtaken by Sauber's Sergio Perez until the Mexican driver ran off the track with six laps to go, giving the Ferrari enough of a gap to win.

The Ferrari team had been considered to be in crisis after a poor start to the season, but a superb display of wet-weather driving gave two-time world champion Alonso a memorable victory. Perez's second place was Sauber's best-ever race finish.

Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton of McLaren finished third ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber and Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen .

"It's an unbelievable result, a great job from the team," Alonso said. "It's a big surprise to win. We were not competitive in Australia and we were not competitive (in qualifying) here."

Perez's delight with his first podium finish was tempered by the knowledge it could have been more.

"Today a win was possible," Perez said. "I was catching Fernando and I knew I had to get him soon because (on) the sectors with high speed I was losing the front tires.

"I touched the curb and I went onto the dirty side of the track. It was completely wet and I lost the win."

Hamilton finished third from pole for a second straight week, but was glad to have avoided the trouble that struck some championship rivals.

"We would have liked to have more points this weekend but I can't really complain -- I'm on the podium for the second race in a row."

Williams' Bruno Senna finished sixth in his best F1 finish, Force India's Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg were seventh and ninth, respectively, separated by Toro Rosso's Jules Vergne. Mercedes' Michael Schumacher took the last point in 10th.

The race finished in gathering gloom at 6:48 p.m. due to the long delay caused by a tropical downpour that started after just six laps.

Immediately after the restart, there was a flurry of pitstops as drivers changed from full wet to intermediate tires, and Alonso emerged in the lead.

He built his advantage to 7.7 seconds by lap 30 of 56 but as his tires began to wear, Perez closed in, cutting the gap to 1.3 seconds before both pitted again to switch to dry-weather tires.

Perez sliced Alonso's lead to just half a second with seven laps to go, but ran wide at the final turn onto the back straight, giving the Spaniard enough breathing space to hang on for victory, 2.2 seconds ahead of the Sauber driver.

Ricky Rubio out 7-9 mounts

The Minnesota Timberwolves do not expect the revelation of a torn lateral collateral ligament in Ricky Rubio's left knee to significantly affect his timeline for a return to the team.

Rubio injured his knee late in a game against the Lakers on March 9. The team initially announced that he tore the ACL when his knee buckled while trying to guard Kobe Bryant.

When Rubio went to Vail, Colo., for his surgery on Wednesday, Dr. Richard Steadman discovered that his LCL needed reconstruction as well. That led some fans to worry that the Spanish point guard who electrified the team would be out even longer.

But after consulting with the doctors and athletic training staff, team officials say the timeline for Rubio's return to the court remains between seven and nine months.

Lebron James is ready to play against Detroit

Lebron told that he was still recovering on Wednesday, one day after crashing into Hill in the final seconds of Miami's win over the Suns. James was on defense and sprinting when he apparently did not see Hill trying to set a screen. Both players tumbled to the court, and James was down for nearly 2 minutes before being helped to his feet.
"I feel good," James said. "I've been better. I'll be better by Friday. But I've been better."

James was appearing Wednesday night at a Miami Heat Charitable Fund event attended by all 15 players, executives including owner Micky Arison, team president Pat Riley, CEO Nick Arison, head coach Erik Spoelstra and some family members. James arrived with fiancee Savannah Brinson, appearing for a few minutes on the white carpet outside the event and spoke with reporters about everything from the NCAA tournament to Tim Tebow's future.

"It's a fun night," James said.

James took two hard falls in Tuesday's win over Phoenix, one in the first quarter where he banged his right elbow, then the more spectacular of the two in the final seconds of the fourth.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade said he couldn't recall seeing James stay down for so long after getting shaken up on the court.
"Not that long," Wade said. "When he was still down, I knew it was something. It was a good hit. But he's fine. He's good. He wasn't out of it. He just got hit pretty good."

LeBron James has re-aggravated his right elbow injury

In Tuesday night’s Phoenix Suns game against the Miami Heat, LeBron James received two really heavy hits and went down on the floor twice in the night.

LeBron James has re-aggravated his right elbow injury which initially became a cause of concern during LeBron James time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and if this was not enough, LeBron James also took a hard hit on the head during play.

"It's the same elbow I hurt in Cleveland so I was a little off, I would say, for the rest of the game," said James. "We'll see the next couple days. I'll come and get some treatment on it. Hopefully doesn't cause any problems."
LeBron James suffered the injury as a direct result of the hard foul made by Markieff Morris, the rookie forward.
At the time it was feared that LeBron James might have suffered a concussion when he went crashing into Grant Hill, though the Miami Heat trainers did let LeBron James return to play after this hit.
"I've never had one of those hits since I've had on pads and a helmet. I don't know exactly what happened," James said. "I had a steal coming and the next thing I know, I was on the floor."
When LeBron James was questioned on a history of a concussion then he replied "No, I'm too tough for that.”

Derrick Rose and Ricky Rubio injuries

Derrick Rose will miss his third straight game on Saturday night against the Philadelphia 76ers because of a strained groin.

Ricky Rubio will have reconstructive surgery on his injured left knee next week.
The Timberwolves announced Friday that Rubio's operation will take place next Wednesday in Vail, Colo., with Dr. Richard Steadman, a noted physician who has treated many athletes over the years.

Kapono is now a free agent.
Cleveland Cavaliers waived the veteran forward Saturday, two days after he was acquired from the Los Angeles.
