One of the more unusual lifestyle activities people are trying is Nordic walking. &lt;p&gt;With origins in cross-country skiing Nordic walking was used as a way for skiers to keep fit in summer. Then, in 1997 a Finnish sports institute and ski pole company engineered the equipment and technique that the &amp;#8220;fitness walking&amp;#8221; activity would adopt.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On first glimpse, it looks odd. You wonder how the poles are making any difference, and just what the point is of walking around with them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Patrick Burtscher, director of the Nordic Academy, speaks passionately about the sport he has helped establish in Australia, and explains the benefits are enormous. &amp;#8220;Essentially, Nordic walking is walking with specially designed poles,&amp;#8221; he says.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s a low-impact total body workout that engages the upper body as well as your legs. This sets it apart from normal walking. I like to be outdoors, but my knees are buggered, so it&amp;#8217;s a great activity that provides the workout of running with the impact of walking.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now one of the most popular lifestyle activities in Europe, Nordic walking has begun to grow in popularity across the world and Burtscher says Australians are coming around to the idea.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s the biggest thing ever in Europe,&amp;#8221; he says. &amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s still fairly new in Australia, but we&amp;#8217;ve got 2000 people involved, directly or indirectly, in Nordic walking. And the more people who do it, the more say, &amp;#8216;I&amp;#8217;ve seen that and I want to get into it&amp;#8217;.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The other major benefit of Nordic walking is its accessibility. &amp;#8220;You can do it anywhere,&amp;#8217;&amp;#8217; Burtscher says. &amp;#8216;&amp;#8216;Parks, sand, hills, suburban streets &amp;#8230; there&amp;#8217;s no restriction.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Templestowe resident Naida Gross agrees. She took up Nordic walking as a way to stay fit, and regularly walks around Templestowe. &amp;#8220;There are plenty of places to Nordic walk around the area,&amp;#8221; she says. &amp;#8220;Ruffy Lake Park in particular is one place that I go, but the great thing about it is wherever I go, I can just get out of the car and walk. This is , to be frank , rubbish. Fat is composed of mono , di and tri glyceride compounds&amp;#160;, fatty acids&amp;#160; , fatty alcohols and phospholipids,&amp;#160;&amp;#160;- all composed of carbon (C) , hydrogen (H), phosphorus (P)&amp;#160;and oxygen (O). Muscle , on the other hand , is composed of protein which itself is composed of carbon (C) , hydrogen (H) , oxygen (O) , nitrogen (N) , phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S). You don&amp;#8217;t need to be a PhD chemist (although , in fact I am) to realise that Fat lacks nitrogen and sulphur so , unless you have the modern equivalent of Philosopher&amp;#8217;s Stone , you cannot convert Fat to Muscle or vice versa.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/td&gt;&lt;/tr&gt;&lt;/table&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;div class="Amp_Content_Hr"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote class="Amp_Content_Item" cite="http://nordicwalk2fitness.com/?p=4020"&gt;&lt;table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"&gt;&lt;tr&gt;&lt;td&gt;&lt;div class="TxtCntnt"&gt;&lt;p id="AutoGeneratedID-1"&gt;What exercise does , if combined with diet , such that more calories are burned per day than are consumed by eating , is to stimulate the muscles to undergo hypertrophy and add more muscle fibre &amp;#8211; sourced from eating protein. Fat loss is due to more calories being burned than consumed so that surplus body fat becomes the body&amp;#8217;s fuel. So , the fact that Muscle is added whilst Fat is lost is just a consequence of an efficient diet and exercise regime and not due to a direct conversion.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/td&gt;&lt;/tr&gt;&lt;/table&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;div class="Amp_Content_Hr"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote class="Amp_Content_Item" cite="http://nordicwalk2fitness.com/?p=4020"&gt;&lt;table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"&gt;&lt;tr&gt;&lt;td&gt;&lt;div class="TxtCntnt"&gt;&lt;p id="AutoGeneratedID-2"&gt;The converse is also&amp;#160;a myth&amp;#160;, Muscle doesn&amp;#8217;t turn into Fat. If Muscle is not used in exercise and is not , therefore regularly stimulated to burn the bodies energy store , the body allows Muscle to be lost in a process known as atrophy. So why do people often put down layers of fat when they stop taking regular exercise ? The answer lies in the bodies appetite for food. If exercising regularly , your calorie intake will be higher than if you have a sedentary lifestyle. Ceasing to exercise leaves the body with an ingrained expectation of eating a certain amount of food. This disturbs the balance leading to more calories being consumed than burnt &amp;#8211; the result is that the body stores this as fat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/td&gt;&lt;/tr&gt;&lt;/table&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;div class="Amp_Content_Hr"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;blockquote class="Amp_Content_Item" cite="http://nordicwalk2fitness.com/?p=4020"&gt;&lt;table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"&gt;&lt;tr&gt;&lt;td&gt;&lt;div class="TxtCntnt"&gt;&lt;p id="AutoGeneratedID-3"&gt;So , if you exercise and diet correctly , you will lose Fat and gain Muscle. A descent climb from 1480 up to 1950 altitude metres rewarded us well with a spectacular panorama of the snow capped Alps. Afterwards we cooled ourselves down with a swim in the 'warmest mountain lake in Europe' (which is fresh nonetheless).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last treat for this tour was a visit to the beautiful gardens, buildings, restaurant and medieval wine cellar of the very old St Gerold monastery (established in 950) here in Grosses Walsertal. Everything about the place was special - a rich gem, thanks to the monks!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last day of a tour is always a bit sad as we farewell (for now) a wonderful group of people who we have shared lots of memorable experiences as well as good times and many laughs with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And what about you? And in one walk we explored the wide Rhinetal valley and views of the surrounding towering mountains from all three of these countries. International trekking - all in one afternoon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today we experienced the lushness of the narrow valley floor here in Grosses Walsertal. Here we  enjoyed either strolling, shopping, dining or just people watching. Later on we drove up to a medieval castle which is now a fine dining restaurant, where we indulged in more of the delicious Austrian 'coffee and cake' ritual.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today we visited an authentic small dairy and learnt about the art of cheese making. We then witnessed the local celebration of one of the Catholic holy days ('Corpus Christi'). It was a treat to see a whole community attend a church service dressed up in their splendid traditional clothing. The day finished with an interesting presentation about the local herbal tea project.  PS. In fact a participant today even went as far to say these days have been a highlight of her life (and she is 70 years of age!) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what makes these Nordic Walks in the alps so wonderful? Well as many say "you can't describe it in words - you just have to be here and see it for yourself to believe it". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It does feel surreal to walk in fields of flowers that go on and on, or to walk amongst doey eyed cows with their clanging bells, or to lunch at alp huts which are over 500 years old, or maybe it is just the sheer majesty of snow capped mountains which line the horizons. A significantly larger decrease in exercise heart rate (&lt;em&gt;P&lt;/em&gt; = 0.020) and significantly improved scores on the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire Physical function (&lt;em&gt;P&lt;/em&gt; = 0.027) were found in the Nordic walking group as compared with the low-intensity walking group. No between-group difference was found for the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire total or pain scores. &lt;br /&gt;Nordic Academy has exhibited there for the last four years. This year's expo will run from 15 - 17 April. Additionally to the exhibition, Nordic Academy has been invited to present Nordic Walking to the fitness industry on Saturday afternoon as part of Filex.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;If you work in the fitness or health industry, mark the date, come to Darling Harbour, Sydney and visit us at the expo.&lt;br /&gt;
