Nanotechnology is science on a very tiny level—it examines the atoms and molecules of different substances to see how they affect each other. Recently, this research has been put to impressive use.

Nanotechnologists are now saying that they have produced “self-cleaning” products that, when applied to typical household surfaces, simply make the dirt disappear.

Nanotechnology cleaning has several branches and functions in many different ways, but just a few of them are:

Self-cleaning fabrics. Fashionistas, rejoice! Australian researchers have discovered that a thin layer of titanium dioxide nanoparticles will immediately “eat” any stain. This could revolutionize the clothing industry.

So far they’ve only tried this technique on wool and silk, but don’t worry—eventually they’ll get around to all your favorite fabrics.

Cleansing films. These chemical treatments are applied (usually sprayed) onto smooth surfaces that tend to accumulate a lot of grime.

This makes them perfect for the kitchen or bathroom. After being sprayed, the nanotechnology in the chemical breaks down dirt at a molecular level, so that if left on long enough it will completely dissolve. If left to work only a small amount of time, it will at least make the grime easy to wipe off.

One of these films uses titanium oxide nanoparticles as its main ingredient. Titanium oxide is known as a “photocatalyst” because it has the ability to turn ordinary light into energy, and then uses that energy source to kill harmful bacteria. When you use this nano-spray, it literally eats the dirt right off of anything you spray it onto.

This form of nanotechnology cleaning has also been modified to create a super-effective window cleaner. Nanotechnologists have customized the molecular characteristics of thin polymer layers, making a product that you can quickly and easily apply to glass surfaces from your kitchen window to your car’s windshield.

Many people enjoy using it on their windshield because it has long-lasting water repellant properties. This not only makes the windshield easier to keep clean, but also makes driving in the rain much safer.

Nanoparticle soaps. When nanoparticles—or in other words small amounts of a chemical whose structure is based on nanotechnology, are placed within a regular hand soap, they greatly increase the efficiency of the soap.

This is great news for the environment, since nanoparticles can replace other chemicals with harmful byproducts. It also increases the natural efficiency of hand soap to keep your hands clean, making this a win-win situation from many angles.

Silver nanoparticles. This one is still in question because there is some concern that small particles of silver may damage helpful bacteria if they find their way into the water systems, as they inevitably will if used for cleaning purposes.

On the other hand, their antibacterial properties make them great cleaning agents when it comes to the gunk on your counters and floors. Elemental silver naturally kills off harmful bacteria.

Super washing machines. Companies like Samsung have used nanotechnology cleaning to revolutionize the way we clean clothes.

During the wash and rinse cycles, their machines electrolyze silver particles to produce over 400 billion silver ions. These ions penetrate and permeate the clothing inside the washing machine, giving it a deep-clean at the molecular level.

Not only this, but the nano-silver provides a lasting layer of sterilization that eliminates 99.99% of household bacteria on your clothing for up to 30 days. And perhaps best of all for mothers is that it automatically keeps the washing machine clean.

The silver nanoparticles disinfect every little nook and cranny of the washer’s insides. Samsung is also developing a similar product that will keep your refrigerator clean and free of bacteria.

Below is a list of other household cleaning products that are currently in development:

Altimate Enviorcare. This spray-on film is packed full of titanium oxide nanoparticles and not only kills bacteria, but also eliminates odors.

EnviroSan Products. This line of cleaning products replaces harmful substances with more environmentally-friendly nanoparticles called “micelles,” which remove grease and dirt with unparalleled efficiency.

Nanofilm. As the name suggests, this one is also a liquid film. It uses polymer molecules that bond to glass surfaces like your windshield, protecting it with a thin, strong shield that repels dirt and water. This means that your windshield will self-clean for weeks before another application is needed.

Nanotec.Similar to Nanofilm, but with a more all-purpose application. It can be sprayed on most smooth surfaces and not only cleans the dirt off them, but leaves behind a hydrophobic layer of nanoparticles that repel water and dirt.

Although these miraculous nanotechnology cleaning products are still in their experimental stages, within as little as five years we may find them becoming a central part of our everyday lives. Already there are a handful of everyday cleaning products being developed.

However, the ramifications of this technology will go beyond your living room, although they are useful around the house. Nanotechnology is keeping everything clean, from cars to windows to historical monuments.

Certain important buildings in Rome and Tokyo have already been given a liberal coat of self-cleaning spray to keep grime and dirt from accumulating.

Nanotechnology also creates a positive solution for pollution. The future of nanotechnology is bright, there are endless possibilities, could we invent a substance that eats garbage, who knows ! ? Scientists are conducting research products of this nature.

Researchers at the University of South Australia’s Ian Wark Research Institute have found a way to purify drinking water with nanotechnology, something that is increasingly crucial in today’s world. Poor-quality drinking water continues to be a dangerous health issue for the majority of the earth’s population.

However, researchers Peter Majewski and Chiu Ping Chan discovered that by coating silica particles with a thin layer of hydrocarbon-based active material and releasing them into major water systems, they can remove bacteria, viruses, and toxic chemicals from water to make it safe for human consumption.

These Surface Engineered Silica, or SES, were mixed into the water for an hour and then strained out. After its nanotechnology treatment the previously contaminated water was found to be completely free of pathogens.

In the year 2000 an image of a tiny robotic submarine travelling through a human artery travelled round the world and was even pictured in the UK tabloid newspaper The Mirror (Thursday, 7 September, 2000) under the title “Fantastic Voyage 2”. This tiny 4mm long craft was said to be able to save lives before the end of the decade, to be able to cruise through blood vessels using sensors to check for signs of illness and cancer and, it was reported, may one day be able to repair arteries and hearts. It was there to demonstrate in a visible way what could already be achieved in the field of micro- or nanotechnology. A similar picture was also exhibited at the Hannover Expo 2000 [see 11].

The year 2000 image of a prototype of a nano-submarine, which circulated widely in the press, appeared a century after a picture of Jules Verne’s Nautilus had graced the visitors’ guide to the Paris Expo in 1900 [20], a sign that the Nautilus had become part of modern mythology (see figure 1 for another example). We seem to have come a long way in a century, but we can’t seem to leave the Nautilus myth quite behind us yet – and, as we shall see, it would soon merge with the nano-myth. (It should be stressed however that the year 2000 image was not the first. DTV Shredder – Militarised Skateboard

When the zombie invasion strikes and we all need to find ways to get around, maybe a motorized skateboard with giant caterpillar tracks might not be the most practical. But anyone riding this bad boy will definitely be the envy of everyone stuck in boring armored trucks. The DTV Shredder promises to go where no skateboard has gone before, and to look kind of awesome doing it. It was actually designed by creator Ben Gulak to be a first-response military vehicle for soldiers who need all-terrain access.

Because of the DTV Shredder’s low center of gravity, it can travel at high speeds over pretty much any kind of land conditions. With or without a rider, it speeds along over terrain that a regular ATV wouldn’t be able to handle, let alone a traditional skateboard.

The impressive contraption can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and take on 40 degree slopes with no problem. Its creator says it can be used for various military operations: reconnaissance, surveillance, medical evacuations and rescues.

If the situation is too dangerous for a human rider to swoop in on the motorizedskateboard, the DTV Shredder can be operated remotely. We’re guessing that characteristic would also be pretty handy when deploying decoys to distract the zombies – just don’t try to do any grinds on it.

Extrasensory Blimp

Tracking the enemy location and operations from a clairvoyant distance of 20,000 feet is an advantage in itself. The possibility of this vision is about to become true in the form of a $211 million cash program called Blue Devil. It is supposed to be the size of seven Goodyear Blimps equipped with updated cameras, radars and listening devices.

In the past, U.S. planes have already performed tasks of preparing surveillance videos, but it is still a lengthy time-taking procedure. But Blue Devil will be integrated with sensors and a supercomputer which will provide the information to ground troops within 15 seconds. Retired Lt. Gen. David Deptula says that “It (the blimp) could change the nature of overhead surveillance.”

The first phase of the project is already on its way. Last year, four modified planes were shipped to Afghanistan comprising an array of surveillance gear. In the second phase, bigger and more complex ships will be introduced which will be built of TCOM LP – longer than a football field at 350 feet. One of the sources working on the project has concluded that “It’s freakishly large, one of the largest airships produced since World War II.”

The U.S. Air Force contends that its size would play a huge role in the war zone, as it can be fueled for a week’s time. It will be a significant technological flight as the previous lighter than air models flew just up to 3000 feet. Mav6 is working on the embedding work consisting of sensors connected through pallets of electronics.

The wide range of on-board listening devices includes: day/night video cameras, communications relays and receivers for ground sensors and wide area airborne surveillance system (WAAS). These sensors integrated with different cameras can film areas up to two-and-a-half miles around.
Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has calculated the requirement of 2,000 analysts to process the footage collected by a single drone fitted with WAAS sensors. The point here to be noted is that the next-generation WAAS will derive information from 96 cameras – that would generate 274 terabytes of information.

The supercomputer supporting the blimp is equivalent to 2,000 single-core servers that can process up to 300 terabytes per hour. Its processors will also crunch the information by adding meta tags of geographical location and time zone. So the task will be easier forground troops as it will provide only that information in which they are interested. The first flight of Blue Devil is scheduled for October 15, 2011.

Skylon Spaceplane Concept

Whenever we think of space endeavors, organizations such as NASA, European Space Agency or even ISRO crop up in our heads. But a private British aerospace company – Reaction Engines Limited (REL) is all set to rather develop a more inclusive system of space traveling, with their Skylon spaceplane concept.

The Skylon concept will be a single stage to orbit combined cycle powered orbital spaceplane. A single stage to orbit (SSTO) vehicle reaches orbit from the surface of a body without jettisoning hardware, in the process expending only propellants and fluids. That means the Skylon will not use booster rockets of any kind (though SSTO vehiclesstill remain in conceptual stages).

And here comes the part about fuel efficiency that interests us – if the researchers canwork it out, the cost of launching a payload to geostationary orbit would be fifteen times cheaper than it is now! The concept will be using the company’s own SABRE engine (Synergistic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine), and according to European Space Agency:

“ESA has not identified any critical topics that would prevent a successful development ofthe engine.”

Again it should be duly noted that the SABRE is also at its conceptual stage (though a engine derivative has already being designed for a passenger jet). The system basically calls for a hypersonic precooled hybrid air breathing rocket engine for launching the proposed Skylon into low Earth orbit (LEO). The precooling mechanism cools the hot, ramcompressed air, in effect creating a high pressure ratio within the engine. Thecompressed air is further fed to the combustion chamber, to be ignited with liquid hydrogen, while the high pressure ratio provides the high thrust at very high speeds and altitudes.

The Land Walker exoskeleton is a product of Japanese company sakakibara-kikai. Used mainly for product promotion and display, the intimidating weaponry fires nothing but harmless soft plastic balls. And with a top speed of just 1mph it’s not going to replace the wheel just yet.

However, standing over 3 metres in height, and weighing in at 1000kg (2,205 lbs) the Land Walker’s shuffling gait is an impressive sight to behold. Although it would probably run into problems with anything but a completely smooth surface.

80M “Military” Style Yacht

This daring project is characterized by aggressive design solutions and features high prow and aft-deck overhang. The hull is made from steel and aluminium.

The superyacht is powered by twin 2.260hp Caterpillar diesels and would deliver a 16-knot maximum cruise speed.

The new superyacht features new side windows, slightly rounded to provide perfect sea view. On the bow of the superyacht, there are helicopter facilities for an Augusta Grand, which can be stored in a dedicated hangar below the heli platform.

NYPD testing scanners to reveal concealed guns

NEW YORK — New York City police say they are testing a new way to find concealed guns by using radiation scanners that can detect people carrying firearms.

NYPD Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the new technology can reveal a firearm concealed under clothing, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

The technology, similar to infrared imaging, can detect a natural energy known as terahertz radiation emitted by the human body, Kelly said during his State of the NYPD address Tuesday.

Because that energy cannot travel through metal, a concealed gun can be detected from the image captured by the detector, Kelly said.

"This technology has shown a great deal of promise as a way of detecting weapons without a physical search," he said.

The technology has been undergoing testing by the NYPD and the U.S. Department of Defense for the past three years.

The NYPD hopes to install the heat-seeking devices on police vehicles in the near future, Kelly said.

"We want to use new technology to protect the public and police officers from illegal guns," he said.

But civil libertarians say they worry the scanning devices will be unable to distinguish between a gun and other harmless metal objects such as an iPod.

If the technology only picks up only fuzzy images of possible guns, civil liberties lawyer Norman Siegel said, it could prompt police to make unwarranted stops.

Invisible Tanks Coming To The Battlefield Within Five Years

After nuclear chain reaction e-camouflage is one such concept which can change the entire scenario of modern warfare. By switching on to the invisible mode you can enter and create havoc in the enemy territory within a fraction of minutes. The British Army has dared to think of such a concept in the form of an electronic ink to make the tanks invisible. Unlike traditional forms of camouflage, this technique uses highly sophisticated electronic sensors that will project the surrounding images – making the tank to get merged in the landscape.

Till now, such concepts remained the subject matter of alien technology – also showcased in many Hollywood flicks. Scientists are hopeful that this new technology soon will be deployed in the war-ridden zones of Southern Afghanistan.

The invisible tank was conceptualized in the BAE’s Future Protected Vehicle Program, which is going to be implemented in seven different vehicles (manned and unmanned). The program majorly encompasses
Pointer (an agile robot), Bearer (a modular platform), Wraith (low signature scoutvehicle), Safeguard: (an ultra-utility infantry carrier), Charger (a lethal and survivable attack vehicle), Raider (a remotely or autonomously controlled skirmishing platform) and Atlas (convoy system).

The project is being considered as a reactionary response to the British Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) “Capability Vision” for armored vehicles. The commanders are hoping to execute the project within four years. Initially the tests will be conducted on lightweightvehicles powered by hybrid electric drives.

The project is not only limited to an invisible tank but is also in quest of some new technologies, like: fuel reduction technology, tougher bulletproof glass, biometric integration (for tracking the threats in highly crowded places) and many more.

“The trick here is to use machines to do what they are best at (and humans are not) – ploughing very quickly through dull, repetitive data to strip out the overwhelming bulk which is of no use and would take a long time and enormous human resources to process” — with these words Hisham Awad, Head of the the Future Protected VehicleProject, has concluded that casualities in the war zone can be limited to much extent by referring to these technologies.

Moreover, the technology developed in the Laser Power Systems, is already working well, and not just exist on paper.Â It remains only to establish a secure car engine based on this technology and test it.

Nikon has launched a gadget that some might think was inspired by science fiction and the movies, the Nikon Port UP.

The Nikon Media Port Up is a multimedia headset with a built in display, headphones, Wi-Fi, and built in memory of either 4GB or 8GB, motion sensors and a built in rechargeable battery.

The device is operated by moving your head up of down and left and right and then the built in motion sensors translate this to enable you to control the menu.

According to Nikon, viewing movies and content on the built in display is the same as watching it on a 50 inch screen from a distance of 3 metres.

The Nikon Media Port UP will also be able to surf the web and use programs like Window Media Player.

The Nikon Port UP is available now in Japan with the base model (4GB) retailing for around $580, there is no word on when it will arrive in the US and Europe.
