The music, the costumes, the characters; oh my!

Despite the on and off bouts of heavy rain, crowds still enjoyed themselves among the myriad of events Parramatta had to offer. Four dedicated stages, a double-decker music bus and various pop-up artists floating up and down Church St; Parramatta was simply bursting with cultural and creative energy. I chose to ignore my map and instead let the lights and sounds guide me to the hotspots.

What looked like a closed-up and abandoned carousel wheel, turned out to be the gorgeous Baroque-style Idolize Speigeltent! If you have no idea what that is, don’t worry, I didn't either. Once you pass the women in fish-nets and fascinators and the men in braces and bowler hats you are swallowed up by coloured lights, mirrored private booths, detailed carvings and ornate furniture. People were standing around a circular dance floor watching those brave enough to let loose and have a boogie under the shimmering of a disco ball.

DJ Tyson Koh was managing the beats as men and women of every age gave in to the foot-tapping and hip-swaying and put on quite a show. The disco/punk/soul music flowed and the vibe was of the ‘just go with it’ variety. You didn’t need to know how to dance, just how to flail. As I am of the latter I could have stayed here all night!

Thankful to get out of the rain but eager to see what else was on display I begrudgingly vacated the Speigeltent and made for the As The World Tipped Stage, but as the rain was still falling unfortunately the show did not go on. It was time for dinner while waiting for the rain to pass.

It took me 15 minutes to sit down in a restaurant along Eat Street; not because of the queues of people – of which there were aplenty – but because I was stopped along the way. As you walked away from one event you were greeted by another, the sounds subtly segway-ing so that you were entertained from every direction. I passed a man singing and dancing to a gramophone, a duo playing African drums, a DJ mixing beats with a stereo system created out of a garbage bin, and an old fashioned brass band led by a man with a very sultry voice. Oh yes, I lingered there for a while!

The highlight was definitely the ethereal acrobatics of A Wired Aerial Theatre production on the As The World Tipped Stage. What I thought was just a group of people dangling on a vertical platform – as if that wasn’t dangerous and exciting enough - turned out to be a mesmerising performance; an amalgamation of music, narration, projected images, dance and of course, acrobatics. The actors propelled us into a powerful tale where climate change has ripped the world apart and Mother Nature is seeking revenge. The actual rain did nothing to deter me from the outdoor event, in fact it added to the performance which aimed to highlight the direction the world is headed if environmental issues are ignored.

The image of an actor burning in flames as she fell into a crevice that pierced the centre of the earth was as horrifying as it was beautiful.

Aside from a couple of pushy patrons who were complaining their view was ruined by numerous umbrellas; the whole night was full of families, couples, tourists and locals enjoying the buzz and atmosphere of the Sydney Festival: Parramatta Opening Night.

If you missed it, don’t fret! The Closing Night is this Saturday, January 21st and is building up to be as good as the Opening! Grab the kids, grab the partner, grab your friends, (and perhaps some gumboots, just in case) and head down this Saturday to enjoy all the amazing (and free!) events!
I had a feeling that I was going to be in for a great afternoon. Ali wrote the Day the Sky Turned Black, inspired by interviews with survivors of the Black Saturday Bushfires. The show gained wide critical acclaim across the globe; so I knew she was a women that wouldn't settle for anything less than perfect; I was right.
Stage Fright is a tale of a ghost who has to scare the people in the attic otherwise he won't pass his exam and the three children will have to stay in the attic for a whole year. So, they re-intact stories to try and scare each other, the trouble is one girl is un-scarable!

The set was magical (almost literally)! I can see it now as clear as a bell. Ali's direction around the stage, through cupboards and into Dunnies was smooth and well thought out to give the maximum entertainment value. Paul Jennings stories are great, the actors all performed the multiple roles with ease. The actors were young; but all of them have achieved a number of roles already and judging by their performances we will be seeing quite a bit more of them.
As this production was aimed for children there were quite a number of them in the audience, I sat fairly near the back, I did not see one child move or make a noise (other than those expected!) during the whole performance, so that is a testament in itself. There were a few couples so don't be put off because you can find some children to take, you will enjoy it.

The Festival involves 300 writers and directors and almost 500 actors. This year is it's 11th year, it has seen amazing growth and following over those years.
The Festival starts with a call out to writers and Independent Theatre Companies to submit their works, these are then assessed and the plays for the Festival are carefully chosen. Directors are then invited to choose which play they would like to produce and finally the actors are auditioned and the rehearsals commence. Of course that sounds easy but can you image organising that many plays, with that many actors, the lighting, sound, props and staging?
Each week shows 10 plays and each night the audience is invited to pick the two which they enjoyed the most. The audience votes are tallied and the top two for the week are showcased in the Peoples Choice night.

The King Street Theatre (formerly the Newtown Theatre), Newtown was a buzz of excitement as the audience anticipated a night of mini performances; which of them would we love and which we would gladly never see again? We burst through to the stage to grab a seat and settle into the night.
This is week two, the plays for the night were:
The Interview - a son interviewed his father, this promised to be good, being written by Andrew O'Keefe, but it was poorly acted and really didn't develop into anything worth remembering.
Six Naked Girls - a very funny play, cleverly written. It made the audience feel as if they were actually taking part, it was very engaging.
One Day in the Life of Keef - again I thought the writer did an excellent job putting this together, a tribute to Kieth Richards.
The Actor - like the previous one, a one man show. It was a good concept and well done, but not one that will remain with you.
Sparkling Effluescence - Would we drink re-cycled water? This only works if you are Australian, coming from England/ Europe we already drink re-cycled water and think nothing of it. However, it was funny and the phone call to the computer; though not a new idea; was good too.
Six Sharp Words - This I thought started well but never really developed into anything.
Pretty Bird - A very funny short play about a couple taking therapy by talking to a bird, a novel idea and well executed, with a twist.
Hyacinth Court - A story telling piece about a young girl and a Nazi soldier (post war) living next door to each other. It was a poignant piece and the two actors gave a great performance.
Jane Austen Made Me Do It - Very funny, well constructed and performed, great costumes any Jane Austen fans would love it.
The Cause - Again very funny, so funny that even the two actors had a hard time keeping a straight face! Jacob Boylan & Neel Kolhatkar both wrote, directed and performed the play obviously love language and have a great sense of humour.

Each of these plays lasted ten minutes so if you didn't like one you knew you would probably like the next. Which two do you think I voted for?

Short and Sweet is the worlds largest short play festival, go and see some of the shows, they are excellent value and excellent fun. Listen to our interview with the Festival director Pete Malicki.

Tom Bradley, who hails from country NSW, has been awarded the second annual Sydney Dance Company Foxtel Scholarship*, which offers him a three-month internship with the company, including a spot in the first season, 2 One Another**. Tom won Best Emerging Male Performer and was nominated for Most Inspiring Performance and Best Choreography by an Emerging Artist at the 2010 New Zealand Festival of Dance. He is also the recipient of two previous scholarships to the Victoria College of the Arts Secondary School and the New Zealand School of Dance.
New Zealander Alana Sargent performed in Sydney Dance Company's 2010 New Creations 2 Season after receiving the inaugural Sydney Dance Company Foxtel Scholarship in 2010. She has been training at the New Zealand School of Dance since she was 13 when she began as a junior associate before commencing full time study in 2008. Due to previous engagements, Alana will commence with Sydney Dance Company in April.

Born in Tasmania yet South Australian-bred Jesse Scales completed her training in Adelaide with Terry Simpson where she gained the Royal Academy of Dance Solo Seal Award at 16. Jesse went on to study at the New Zealand School of Dance majoring in Classical Ballet and graduated in 2011. In 2010, Jesse performed in Melbourne Ballet Company's Project Six: Moment of Inertia for which she was awarded the Artistic Director's Young Dancer Award. As a child, Jesse also appeared in Meryl Tankard's 1998 (ADT) and Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake (TAB).

Originally from Sydney, Chris Aubrey graduated from Adelaide Centre for the Arts in 2007 with a Bachelor of Dance Performance. Chris joined ADT in 2007 where he performed in G and Be Your Self. He also worked with Leigh Warren Dancers to perform Maria de Buenos Aires at the opening of the Brisbane Festival 2011.
Of the new blood, Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela says, "We are so pleased to welcome these four uniquely talented dancers to the company, each of whom brings different experience, skills and perspective. Their appointment indicates the serious talent currently coming up the dance ranks, which I think heralds an exciting and refreshing time for the industry as a whole."

And, in a changing of the guard, in 2012 the company bids farewell to Company Dancers Kynan Hughes, Lauren Langlois and Wayne Parsons (Wayne after 2 One Another).

TAP Gallery, one of Sydney's most innovative galleries and Amnesty International Australia, the world's largest human right organization have teamed up for the 16th year running to present the FREEDOM exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from 17-30 January 2012. The official function and presentations on SATURDAY 21st January from 5-8pm will feature live music, high profile speakers, celebrity judges and light refreshments. Each year 100's of guest have enjoyed this festive atmosphere.
Two main awards will be presented on the day: The people's choice award selected by the public attending the function, and the critics' choice selected by a panel of critics, artists and community representatives with up to $1000 in prizes.
The event will aim to increase awareness about Amnesty International's work in human rights protection and encourage support and donations. It will also provide a platform for emerging artists to exhibit their work.
It will be open to all artists and all mediums. The focus of the exhibition will be the artists' interpretation of what freedom means to them (or the lack of Freedom). Applications will be available from TAP Gallery up until the 17th of January, the deadline for works to be delivered. The success of the past 15 "Freedom" exhibitions with crowds of up to 5000 throughout the duration of the exhibition and attracted over 180 entries. We expect the growing profile of this event to draw even greater support from the arts community this year. Both TAP Gallery and Amnesty International are excited about this event and we invite you to join us in the promotion of the "FREEDOM" People's Choice to the community in 2012.

The Amnesty People's Choice Award is generously sponsored by Derivan Finest Acrylic Paints
The shortlist will be put before a judging panel of industry leaders to select a winner for the 2012 Griffin Award.

The award, generously sponsored by PKF Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers, and now in its 15th year, offers a cash prize of $10,000 for an outstanding new Australian play or performance text displaying an authentic, inventive and contemporary voice. In addition to being one of the most
prestigious writing awards in the country, this is a fantastic opportunity for playwrights all over Australia to showcase their talent to Australia's premiere new writing theatre.

Griffin's Associate Director Lee Lewis said "After the overwhelming success of the 2009 Griffin Award winner Silent Disco this year, and the excitement that the upcoming production of A Hoax (2011 winner) is generating, we are well aware that the award is one of our best ways of finding the best new stories that are out there."

The Griffin Award celebrates the bright future of Australian drama and has a long history of highlighting new talent and cementing the careers of emerging writers. Previous winners include Rick Viede (A Hoax 2011, Whore, 2008), Aiden Fennessy (Brutopia, 2010),Lachlan Philpott (Silent Disco,
2009), Damien Millar (Emergency Sexand Other Desperate Measures, 2007), Mary Rachel Brown (Australian Gothic, 2006), Ian Wilding (The Carnivores, 2005), Debra Oswald (Mr Bailey's Minder, 2004) and Brendan Cowell (Rabbit, 2003).

The 2012 winner will be announced at the Griffin Festival of New Writing in June. Selections from all shortlisted plays will be read in the theatre prior to the announcement of the winner, so all lovers of new writing are encouraged to come to the event for a chance to see the newest work from the best writers in the country.

Entry forms are available for download from www.griffintheatre.com.au

On a Tuesday night at the homely Roxbury Hotel in Glebe, a pop-up short film festival took place. Amidst a live band, a westie comedian and the distinctive buzz of after-work drinks, Future Shorts made its way to Sydney.

Future Shorts was designed to localise the culture and entertainment of a wide-scale short film festival; so that you may enjoy it in the comfort of your own neighbourhood, possibly being hosted by a friend of yours. Anyone can host the range of short films simply by becoming part of this nomadic experience.

Tuesday’s event begun with the peppy ‘Stephane Brenau’, a duo acoustic act who warmed up the assembling 20-30 year old crowd with a few covers, including a French rendition of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’. As I snacked on an incredible selection of mixed dumplings (for only $5.00!), I noticed the excitement in the air was brewing. You could sense that those here were eager to see the first pop-up event in Sydney, eager to experience award-winning short films in an intimate environment.

The band gave way to the comedy styling of Mick Meredith who had us bursting with laughter from the very first joke. We’d gone from relaxed tunes to comedy, and were now ready for a night of wonder. I myself wondered if the prior entertainment was purposely chosen, as they differed vastly, much like the short films about to follow.

The lights dimmed and we all gazed to the projection screen. I’d read the bios of the films and was surprised to see that four out of the six were highly awarded, including an Australian film, ‘Deeper than Yesterday’ - now I was supporting the Arts and the Aussies!

The films ranged from sorrowful, to strange, to the incomprehensible and finally, the delightful - a perfect mix. Between each film, slightly tipsy chatter arose as people discussed the apparent – and sometimes unapparent – meanings.

Who were we to judge these films you may ask? We were you!

The beauty of Future Shorts is that it happens anywhere, at anytime and with anyone. Forget stuffy and informal art galleries or expensive theatre shows; for $16 you are given over three hours to enjoy and completely indulge in the notion that you are a part of a worldwide event. You are viewing some of the best-rated short films of the year.

Future Shorts is a fabulous philosophy, which was hosted by two fabulous women who made everyone feel incredibly comfortable. The event was a well-organised and highly entertaining night; not only were we treated to amazing stories and adventures, we were buttered up with live music and outrageous laughs.

If the next Future Shorts showing in Sydney is anything like the first, Sydney is in for a brilliant time!
New Year's Eve in Sydney is the highlight of the Year, what are you going to do? If you still have no idea here are our suggestions for this year.

Every year there is a theme to the night, this year it is Time to Dream. Marc Newson designed this year's theme and logo. The theme encapsulates Sydneysiders' hopes and aspirations and at the stroke of midnight the canvas will be bare, what will you dream of for 2012? A four colours endless rainbow logo represents the broad range of people from different cultures and backgrounds. The rainbow includes violet to represent community, peace, social stability and connectedness; blue to symbolise the harbour, sky and future aspirations; green for the environment, nurturing and growing; and yellow, which epitomises optimism, happiness and a sunny attitude.
The official charity of 2011 Sydney New Year’s Eve is CARE Australia, an international humanitarian aid organisation defending dignity and fighting global poverty. www.care.org.au
