He then used that to run his DEP-skirting exploit.

DEP, which Microsoft introduced in 2004 with Windows XP Service Pack 2, prevents malicious code from executing in sections of memory not intended for code execution and is a defense against, among other things, buffer-overflow attacks.

Nils also sidestepped the ASLR and DEP to exploit the newest version of Mozilla Firefox. The respective companies officials were present at the occasion and were detailed about the flaws. The bugs will be made public only once they are fixed by the respective organizations

Full download of the Pdf Paper : Here

More about dll module

1024-bit RSA encryption cracked by carefully starving CPU of electricity

Earlier 768 bit RSA fell prey to brute force mechanism and now even 1024 bit RSA has been cracked. The underlying concept used was that by tweaking the power supply to the server i.e. by fluctuating voltage supply to the CPU s.t. it produced a single hardware error per clock cycle, the server could be caused to flip single bits in the private key at a time thus allowing them to reason out the password. Using 81 P4 chips and 104 hours of processing time, 1024 bit RSA was successfully hacked in OpenSSL on a SPARC based System ......

HP Opens First Ever Wind-cooled Data Center

Data Centers
Air Conditioning Is a very important aspect in Data Centers. The electrical power used heats the air inside the data center. This has to be controlled in order to prevent components failure. Also the humidity has to be controlled since too much humidity may result in water condensing on the internal components of the Data Center. Almost 40% of the Data Center's electricity usage is by the cooling equipment. In order to cut short this massive energy expenditure, HP has opened the first ever Wind cooled Data Center, The Wynyard center. The data center was originally started by IT outsourcer EDS, which was then acquired by HP for US$13.9 billion in May 2008. The building sits in a blustery and chilly area about eight miles west of the North Sea in the northeast of England. The system keeps the hall at a constant 24C (75.2F). When it is cold outside, some of the exhausted heat is recirculated with the outside air to maintain the right temperature. Chillers are also installed to compensate for higher environmental temperatures.

Humidity Maintenance

To mantain humidity in dry weather conditions, Rainwater is harvested and stored in a 80,000 litre tank and sprinkled in a fine mist through the air to bring up the humidity upto 40-60% as required.

Profits Generated

Out of 1.2 units of electricity used by the data Center, only 2 units are required for this cooling equipment which comes to around 16.6% compared to 40% in the Conventional Methods. Assuming HP pays between 10 to 11 pence per kilowatt hour, using outside air over chillers should save HP up to £2.6 million ($4.16 million) in power annually

Miscellaneous Information

Like other data centers, Wynyard has been built to ensure everything runs even if the power goes out. It has tens of thousands of batteries on hand to provide an uninterrupted power supply, which are then relieved by up to 10 diesel generators supplied by four 85,000-liter underground fuel tanks. The facility could run up to four days on those reserves.

Security is tight. Access cards and biometric details are needed to access halls. Server cabinets are locked, and the keys are only released if the particular engineer has permission encoded on an access card. The entry system to the data halls prevents two people from entering at the same time. The data center also has a high perimeter fence, reinforced walls and constant security.

The Wynyard data center went live last weekend with its first clients in its fourth hall. So far , the universe is winning "

With the increasing computing power available to even casual users, the security-conscious have had to move on to increasingly robust encryption, lest they find their information vulnerable to brute-force attacks. The latest milestone to fall is 768-bit RSA; in a paper posted on a cryptography preprint server, academic researchers have now announced that they factored one of these keys in early December.

Most modern cryptography relies on single large numbers that are the product of two primes. If you know the numbers, it's relatively easy to encrypt and decrypt data; if you don't, finding the numbers by brute force is a big computational challenge. But this challenge gets easier every year as processor speed and efficiency increase, making "secure" a bit of a moving target. The paper describes how the process was done with commodity hardware, albeit lots of it.

Their first step involved sieving, or identifying appropriate integers; that took the equivalent of 1,500 years on one core of a 2.2GHz Opteron; the results occupied about 5TB. Those were then uniqued and processed into a matrix; because of all the previous work, actually using the matrix to factor the RSA value only took a cluster less than half a day. Although most people aren't going to have access to these sorts of clusters, they represent a trivial amount of computing power for many organizations. As a result, the authors conclude, "The overall effort is sufficiently low that even for short-term protection of data of little value, 768-bit RSA moduli can no longer be recommended." 1024-bit values should be good for a few years still.

Given that these developments are somewhat inevitable, even the authors sound a bit bored by their report. "There is nothing new to be reported for the square root step, except for the resulting factorization of RSA-768" they write. "Nevertheless, and for the record, we present some of the details." Still, they manage to have a little fun, in one place referencing a YouTube clip of a Tarantino film following their use of the term "bingo."

Imaging Technology

Electrical engineers from the University of California, San Diego are using W-Band silicon-germanium (SiGe) radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for passive millimeter-wave imaging. The resulting imaging systems would identify concealed weapons, help helicopters land during dust storms, and enable high-frequency data communications.

The new millimeter-wave amplifier system works at the same frequency and follows the same principles as security imaging systems now in use in airports. The new circuit is unique in that it uses standard silicon semiconductor technology, while today's security imaging systems often rely on expensive gallium arsenide or indium phosphide amplifiers.

The circuit includes an antenna that can be used to capture radiation in the millimeter-wave frequency emitted from the human body and from objects under a person's clothing. This radiation passes through clothing largely or completely unaffected. Imagers operating at millimeter waves are particularly useful because they can resolve images down to a millimeter scale, fine enough detail to identify small objects and separate items on a person's body. Using signal processing, these kinds of scanners can put together a temperature map of a person's body that includes any objects underneath the clothing.

Click here for the full story.

Sponsor Message
Falcon 4M60/30 Color
DALSA's new Falcon 4M60 and 4M30 cameras offer 4 megapixel resolution with data rates of 60 or 30 fps, and global shuttering for crisp, clear, color imaging. The silicone template for this plaster model is made by the dentist in a procedure that is unpleasant for the patient. Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF has developed a 3D digitizer to provide the teeth contours without a plaster model.

If a dental prosthesis is necessary, the dentist first has to make a silicone impression for the laboratory. The patient is sent home with a provisional repair and dental technicians work on modeling a plaster impression. The model is then scanned using digital cameras and from the geometric measurement data obtained, the matching dental prosthesis is produced.

The Fraunhofer team developed an optical digitization system that scans the oral cavity and captures 3D data of the teeth using camera optics. A complete picture of the individual tooth is created from several data records. After an all-around measurement, it is possible to represent the complete jaw arch as a virtual computer image.

To obtain precise results, the team used fringe projections in which a projector shines strips of light on the tooth area to be measured. From the phase-shifted images, the evaluation software determines the geometric contour data of the tooth. Two-camera optics provide the sensor chip with image information from different measurement perspectives. After the pixel-precise comparison of various camera images, the evaluation program recognizes any image faults and removes them from the complete image.

It is problematic if the patient moves while the images are being taken in the oral cavity, so the image sequence for each measurement position is captured in less than 200 milliseconds.

Click here for the full story.

SPONSOR MESSAGE
Piranha HS 110 kHz
Piranha HS features 4k resolution with 14x14 micron pixels and an incredible 110 kHz line rate with throughput of 640 MPixels/s. Although the system has not yet been tested on humans, initial results from the prototype indicate the system produces a fusion of detailed PET and MRI images that should allow a more accurate classification of lesions in the breast.

Every year, approximately 180,000 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer. While the disease is still a leading cause of death among women, breast cancer mortality is declining. In particular, new developments in molecular imaging technologies are dramatically improving the ways in which breast cancer is diagnosed and treated. However, many challenges remain in breast imaging, such as obtaining accurate images of dense breast tissue.

When completed, the dedicated breast PET-MRI system will consist of a modular 3D tomographic PET scanner that is inserted inside a dedicated breast MRI coil produced by Aurora Technologies. The modularity of the PET system would allow for the scanner diameter to be adjusted according to patient breast size. Researchers expect the combined modality scanner will provide anatomical information from the MRI to enhance the resolution provided by PET. At the same time, the predictive power of PET in identifying the type of tumor should be able to overcome MRI technology's traditionally high false-positive rates.

Click here for the full story.

Machine Vision Guides Robot Motion
Machine vision can quickly and accurately determine the location of parts so they can be inspected, measured, or manipulated by a robot. A machine vision system works best with an undistorted view of properly lighted and well-controlled parts. The first tasks in developing a machine vision application are to fix the view geometry, control the lighting, and limit the variation of the presented parts.

An example is using machine vision to guide a robot unpacking one-gallon cans from a large pallet of cans. Machine vision components - cameras, vision processors, and software - were provided by DALSA, and Faber Industrial Technologies developed the can-picking robot and integrated the robot with the machine vision.

A feature in the June issue of Imaging Technology by Ben Dawson of DALSA describes how machine vision and robotics were combined to achieve a safe, time-saving system.'

Click here for the full story.

Insider Edition on Photonics

Photonics Tech Briefs E-Newsletter • 06/17/09

In this edition, sponsored by Master Bond and Nextreme:

Light Scrambling Technique May Produce Sharper Images

Researchers Develop Light-Treatment Device to Improve Sleep Patterns

New on the Market: 3D Image Sensor, Plate Polarizers, Temperature Controller, Gooseneck Illuminator

SCRAMBLED RAYS

Electrical engineer Jason Fleischer led a group of researchers in inventing a technique to produce sharper images and a wider field of view for medical diagnostics, microscopes and other imaging systems. With a normal lens (shown on left) some rays are captured and refract towards a camera while other rays are missed, resulting in a blurry image with a limited field of view. The new method (shown on right) uses a nonlinear material to let the rays "talk" with each other. The original rays are altered and new rays (shown in red) are generated. The resulting picture in the camera is scrambled, but a computer algorithm can undo the mixing and yield a crisp, wide-field image. (Image: Christopher Barsi)

When photographers zoom in on an object to see it better, they lose the wide-angle perspective. In other words, they are forced to trade off "big picture" context for detail. But a new imaging method developed by Princeton University researchers could lead to lenses that show all parts of the scene at once in the same high detail. The new method could help build more powerful microscopes and other optical devices.

Cameras and other optical devices - including the human eye - are limited by the amount of light that they can collect through their lens openings, or apertures. In order for a light ray to be recorded, it has to pass through the lens and reach the device's "detector," such as the eye's retina or a digital camera's detector. But many light rays never make it to the detector, either because they are too weak, or because they are deflected. This problem is particularly acute with details that are smaller than the wavelength of light. Light rays from such tiny features fade before they reach the lens. To capture these rays, devices have to probe very near the surface of the object, and scan it point-by-point, stitching together a full image.

The new method addresses the shortcomings of small apertures by taking advantage of the unusual properties of substances called nonlinear optical materials. In conventional lens materials such as glass or plastic, rays of light pass through without interacting with one another. In nonlinear materials, light rays mix with each other in complex ways. Rays that don't reach the camera may pass along some of their information to rays that do get recorded by it. Thanks to the mixing of rays, information that would otherwise be lost manages to reach the camera. The image from a nonlinear lens would therefore be rich in detail. Unfortunately, it would also be distorted – and useless for conventional optics. But if the information could be unscrambled, a computer could reconstruct a high-resolution undistorted image of the entire scene.

Click here for the full story.

     Sponsor Message
Nextreme High Voltage, High Heat Pumping eTEC Cooler Developed for Optoelectronics Industry

Capable of creating a differential (delta T) of up to 51°C at 85°C, between its hot and cold sides, Nextreme's breakthrough OptoCooler™ HV14 operates at a maximum voltage of 2.9V, pumping 1.7 watts of heat in a footprint of only 2.8mm2. Some studies report that more than fifty percent of seniors 65 years of age or older suffer from chronic sleep disturbances. One possible cause of these disturbances, according to researchers, could be a disruption of the body's circadian rhythms — biological cycles that repeat approximately every 24 hours. In recent years, scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center and elsewhere have demonstrated that blue light is the most effective at stimulating the circadian system when combined with the appropriate light intensity, spatial distribution, timing, and duration. Using that data, a team at the Lighting Research Center (LRC) recently tested a goggle-like device designed to deliver blue light directly to the eyes to improve sleep quality in older adults.

"Light and dark patterns are the major synchronizer of circadian rhythms to the 24-hour solar day," said Mariana Figueiro, Ph.D., Lighting Research Center Light and Health Program director and principal investigator on the project. "Light stimulus travels through the retina, the light-sensitive nerve tissue lining the back wall of the eye, to reach the master clock in the brain. However, a combination of age-related changes in the eye and a more sedentary lifestyle may reduce the amount of light stimulus reaching an older person's retina, therefore reducing the amount of light for the circadian system."

As we age, the lens in the eye thickens and the pupil shrinks, reducing the amount of light passing through to the retina. In some cases, such as persons with Alzheimer's disease, the circadian system may require a stronger light stimulus due to deteriorating neural processes in the brain. These physical and neural changes can lead to muted signals to the circadian system. Factor in environmental influences, such as an indoor lifestyle with less access to daylight, and you have a perfect scenario for the development of irregular sleep-activity patterns.

A marked increase in daytime lighting levels can counteract the age-dependent losses in retinal light exposure by providing a stronger signal to the circadian system. However, the color and intensity of commercially available lighting systems, like those used in senior residences, assisted-living facilities, and nursing homes, are designed for visual effectiveness and minimal energy use rather than generating light to stimulate the older circadian system. Hence, the specially designed goggles that deliver blue light spectrally tuned for optimum circadian response.

Click here for the full story.

PRODUCT BRIEFS

ifm efector inc. (Exton, PA) has introduced a new 3D image sensor that measures size, shape, and volume in industrial automation applications. The compact sensor uses time-of-flight distance measurement and photonic mixer device technology to identify an object in the sensor's field of view. For image capture, the 3D sensor's 64 x 48 pixel array projects 3072 points of reference, capturing the entire image in three dimensions. Each pixel within the array has two gates that are controlled by a 20MHz oscillator. Light is emitted from the sensor, reflected by the target, and received back into the PMD chip. The electrons are converted into photons and are separated into the optically sensitive area of the semiconductor called the "mobile charge carrier". Relating the phase difference measured by each pixel to the speed of light gives the distance travelled by light falling onto the detector. The phase shift of the light is then compared to the reference signal and sent from the chip as the representative distance for that pixel. Information from all the pixels is then brought together to create a 3D image.

Saint-Gobain Crystals (Boulder, CO) has introduced a range of high-performance, thin-film plate polarizers optimized for use with Nd:YAG, Nd:YVO4, and Nd:YLF lasers operating at 1064 nm, 1053 nm, 532 nm, 355 nm, and 266 nm. Some prototyping processes utilize traditional manufacturing methods to produce prototypes. Other technologies have emerged and have been improved upon over a relatively short period of time. There are dozens of ways prototypes can be made. As prototyping processes continue to evolve, the product designer is constantly trying to determine what process or technology is best for their unique application.

A white paper, available from Proto Labs, explores the advantages and shortcomings of the major prototyping processes available to today's designer. You'll find detailed process descriptions and material properties of parts produced by each prototyping process. In addition, a helpful decision tree highlights key questions designers must consider when choosing a prototyping process. Ultimately, it will help you select the best prototyping process for your product development process.

If your prototype can faithfully represent the attributes of the end product, it is by definition functional. These requirements often include such things as material properties (e.g. flame resistance), dimensional accuracy for fit-up with mating parts and cosmetic surface finishes for appearance.

If your prototype design can be repeatedly and economically produced in a manner that supports the requirements of the end product, it is by definition manufacturable. These requirements include the ability to maintain the functionality of the design, keep the piece-part cost below the required level, and support the production schedule. No matter how great a design is, it will go nowhere if it can't be manufactured.

Finally, even if your design is functional and manufacturable, it doesn't mean anyone will want to use it. Prototypes are the only true way to verify the viability of the design in this sense. If your design can also pass the challenges associated with market trials and regulatory testing, you're well on your way to a successful product launch.

Click here to download your free copy of the white paper.

     About Proto Labs
Proto Labs is the world's fastest source for custom CNC machined and injection molded parts. A fuel cell, on the other hand, is a clean, quiet, electrochemical device that converts hydrogen into electricity with zero emissions.

Ballard Power Systems in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, designs, develops, and manufactures zero-emission proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The technology is already powering a number of products and applications, including buses, cars, forklift trucks, and residential cogeneration systems.

Engineers at Ballard turned to Protomold of Maple Plain, MN, which offers a high-quality, low-cost method for making injection-molded plastic parts for prototyping and low-volume production. Recently, Protomold produced a part for Ballard's 35-amp, liquid-cooled Mark 1030 fuel cell stack, designed for integration into a Ballard partner's system for the residential cogeneration market.

The Mark1030 fuel cell is a number of fuel cells stacked together. Belleville springs are used to compress graphitic plates in the stack into a single unit to maintain contact and sealing. To keep the stacked cells aligned during compression, a machined metal rod was fed through the holes in the middle of the washers and then the stack of springs was shrink-wrapped. The obvious way to align the washers would be a tube running through the centers of the stack. But to prevent the tube from sticking out past the end of the stack once the springs were compressed, the engineers wanted one that would shorten along with the stack of springs.

The solution was two opposing bases with walls and flexible locking arms. The walls support the spring while the flexible arms lock the two bases together. Under compression, both walls and arms slide past each other towards the opposing bases. To control costs, a single part was made that could be used for both components. Ballard first tried standard rapid prototyping to test the fit, but the resin was too brittle and broke easily. For functional testing, they needed a process that used real production resin to evaluate impact resistance and durability.

The aluminum tooling for injection-molded prototypes was made for under $2,000. For their prototype parts, Ballard specified PA66 nylon resin. At the quantity ordered, Protomold's injection-molded prototypes cost less than a similar number of rapid prototype parts would have. Using the nylon parts for functional testing, they verified their design and moved ahead into limited production.

Click here for the full story.

Fast Part Prototyping Speeds Bike Meter to Market

Small, bicycle-mounted computers measure power and performance, allowing the rider to see and manage his output in real time, both in training and in competition. Typical power meters cost between $1,600 and $5,000. The iBike® Pro power meter from Velocomp LLP, sells for between $400 and $700.

"The iBike isn't just measuring time and velocity and power like other computers, it actually measures the incline of a hill, the wind speed, aerodynamic drag, and friction in the drive train of the bike," according to Velocomp CEO John Hamann. The idea was to measure opposing forces using two inexpensive solid-state sensors: an accelerometer and a wind speed sensor. By measuring opposing forces, the iBike would get the same power numbers as other meters, but would move easily from bike to bike.

Velocomp used SolidWorks to generate product shapes and drawings, enabling them to design the plastics and check clearances without using an industrial design house. Protomold was chosen for final prototypes and, eventually, production parts. After getting first sample parts in March 2006, Velocomp turned again to Protomold two months later, this time for production parts.

"With just two people and two personal computers, we went from product concept to production in just over a year," said Hamann.

Velocomp sells the iBike through Web stores, brick-and-mortar dealers, and distributors in the U.S. and abroad. They have been in volume production since September of 2006, and Hamann estimates annual sales growth at about 50 percent.

Protomold has been an important part not just of the iBike's success, but of the business venture as well. "With a partner like Protomold, we don't just offer a better product; we can also change the way we do business as well. We could wait 12 weeks for large orders of parts to ship from China, but instead, we keep a very small inventory and get parts as we need them from Protomold and our other U.S. suppliers, which lets us be both fast to market and cash-flow-positive at a very early stage."
