Organizando el viaje - Planning the trip

     Organizar un viaje costa a costa en Estados Unidos, ajustando tiempo y presupuesto, no morir en interminables desplazamientos entre ciudades y descansar en habitaciones con un minimo comfort y calidad, no es tarea facil. Estados Unidos es un pais enorme con infinidad de cosas por visitar. Si no se dispone de todo el tiempo y dinero del Mundo, entonces hay que tener en cuenta una serie de factores:

    1)Como quieres moverte por el pais: Hay varias opciones. Desde alquilar un coche en una costa y devolverlo en la otra (solo para bolsillos desahogados o viajes en grupo), comprar un coche y venderlo al final del viaje (riesgo elevado y necesario reservar unos dias extras para la compra-venta), autobus (muy barato pero interminables jornadas viajando), tren (buena relacion calidad-precio pero escasez de rutas en determinadas zonas), avion (rapido, barato y efectivo, pero donde esta el romanticismo?), o una combinacion de todas, opcion elegida para este viaje.

     2)Que ruta elegir: Aqui esta quiza la decision mas dificil. Es comun visitar los Estados Unidos y centrarse en una de las costas, pero este no es el caso, y decidir donde hacer parada se hace complicado. Finalmente y viendo como me iba a transportar hice lo siguiente: estudie los mapas de ruta de Greyhound (bus) y Amtrak (tren) y seleccione aquellas ciudades que podian ofrecerme algo interesante y que seguian una misma ruta rumbo al Oeste sin necesidad de hacer trasbordos en mitad de cada viaje.

     3)Alojamiento: Otro quebradero de cabeza ya que el objetivo es no arruinarse pero tampoco dormir en agujeros. Es muy importante decidir en que zona de la ciudad te quieres quedar, muy en funcion de como te transportes y hacer una buena investigacion por distintos buscadores y paginas locales.

     A continuacion teneis el resultado de varias semanas trabajando en los 3 puntos anteriores. Espero que os guste y que me acompaneis ;).

    Organizing a trip coast to coast in the United States, adjusting time and budget, not to die in endless journeys between cities and relax in rooms with minimal comfort and quality, is not an easy task. The United States is a huge country with lots of things to visit. If you dont get lots of money and time there are some factors that you must check before:

    1)How you want to move across the country: There are several options. From renting a car in one coast and drop it off in the other (only comfortable pockets or group travel), buy a car and selling it to the end of the trip (high risk and the need to book some extra days for the purchase and sale), bus ( very cheap but endless days traveling), train (good value for money but a shortage of routes in certain areas), flight (quick, cheap and effective, but where is the romance?), or a combination of all, chosen option for this trip.

     2)Which route to choose: Here is perhaps the most difficult decison . It is common to visit the United States and focus on one of the costs, but this is not the case, and decide where to stop is difficult. Finally, and seeing how I was going to move across the country I made the following: study the Greyhound (bus) and Amtrak (train) route maps and select those cities that could offer something interesting to me and wich follow the same route to the West without having to make transfers in the middle of each journey.

     3)Accommodation: Another headache since the objective is not to be ruined but also not to sleep in holes. It is very important to decide in which part of town you want to stay, depending on wich is your transportation mode and research strongly by various search engines and local pages.

10 horas y... VOLANDO!!! - 10 hours and... FLYING!!!

Por fin ha llegado la hora. Despues de varios meses dando forma a la idea, y de un intenso mes planificando el viaje, .... ya tenemos aqui los nervios de la ultima noche!!.

Mi vuelo con destino NYC y escala en Zurich es a las 10 de la manana, asi que es momento de dar un pequeno repaso a la maleta y de relajarse un poquito antes de ir a la cama. A continuacion teneis mi lista de equipaje:

Finally the time has come. After several months to shape the idea, and one intense month planning the trip .... Here we have the nerves of last night!!.

My flight to NYC and stop in Zurich is at 10 o'clock in the morning, so it's time to take a little look at the suitcase and relax a bit before going to bed. Below you have my packing list:

Conexion perdida, Brooklyn y “La Buena Suerte” - Missed Connection, Brooklyn and "The Good Luck"

     No quiero presumir de previsor, pero lo que ayer me ocurrio era algo que estaba esperando desde el dia en que compre mi billete a Nueva York. No entiendo como una compania como Swiss vende billetes MAD-ZRH-JFK con un tiempo de escala en Zurich de tan solo una hora. Al minimo retraso la conexion esta perdida, y aun en el caso de llegar en hora a Zurich, tener que pasar mas filtros y andar buscando puertas de embarque no es precisamente la experiencia mas relajante del dia.

     El caso es que cuando llegue a Zurich con casi dos horas de retraso, mi avion a Nueva York ya estaba volando (y no era el unico, segun dijo el comandante por megafonia eramos 90 los pasajeros de ese vuelo con similar problema pero distinto destino). Yo, sabiendo que Swiss no tenia mas vuelos a JFK ese dia, ya me estaba imaginando pasando noche en Zurich y con una suculenta indemnizacion en mis bolsillos.... iluso de mi!! Lo que hicieron fue re-bookear mi vuelo y mandarme a Frankfurt para volar desde alli con Lufthansa. En resumen, finalmente hice MAD-ZRH-FRA-JFK, cogiendo tres aviones y llegando con casi cinco horas de retraso.

     Entonces, donde esta “la buena suerte”?. Pues bien, “La Buena Suerte” es un libro que me recomendo mi gran amigo Hugo y que iba a ser mi lectura en los largos desplazamientos que me esperan......, pues me lo tendre que volver a leer, porque ayer, con tanto retraso, casi lo devoro por completo a falta de 25 paginas. Desde aqui os lo recomiendo a todos. Es un libro muy facil y rapido de leer y es apto tanto para vosotros como para vuestros hijos. Es un cuento que te ensena como la “suerte”, buena y mala, viene y va, pero como la “Buena Suerte”, hay que buscarla y cultivarla.

Brooklyn

     Mi llegada a JFK fue casi a las 10 de la noche, cuando tendria que haber llegado a las 4 de la tarde. Durante un buen rato estuve dandole vueltas a si a esas horas deberia coger un taxi rumbo a Brooklyn, donde se encuentra mi alojamiento, o seguir con el plan inicial de llegar en transporte publico. Por motivos economicos y con espiritu aventurero, elegi la segunda opcion.

     En JFK puedes coger el “Airtrain” que vale 5$ y te lleva a varias estaciones de Brooklyn donde conectas con el metro. En mi caso, una vez en el metro tan solo tenia que hacer un par de trasbordos y llegar a mi hospedaje.... pues asi hice, pero que paso? Que cuando llegue a mi estacion decidi no bajarme del vagon hasta llegar a otra, al menos, visualmente mas acojedora.... y me explico. Yo no tengo ningun tipo de prejucio racial en absoluto, pero tambien soy muy consciente de que no vivimos en el “Mundo de la piruleta y del algodon de azucar”. En todo el trayecto de metro y segun ibamos pasando estaciones, solo subian y bajaban del vagon afroamericanos y latinos con pinta de pandilleros y mirada peligrosa. Yo por supuesto, solo, blanquito, con cara de muerto despues de un interminable viaje y con las alforjas llenas de juguetes, no me sentia lo que podiamos decir “seguro”. Asi que una vez llegado a mi estacion, sin ser de las peores que habia visto, decidi continuar hacia el Oeste rumbo a Manhattan y alli acabar cogiendo un taxi. No me apetecia en absoluto llegar a un barrio desconocido a las 10 de la noche y caminar a lo largo de 4 manzanas cargado con mas regalos que Papa Noel. Ya tuve una experiencia muy poco recomendable en una estacion recondita de la India y no quiero someter de nuevo a mi corazon a este tipo de sobresaltos.

     Finalmente me baje antes de llegar a Manhattan, sali a la calle y cogi un taxi, que en realidad no era un taxi. En NYC hay dos tipos de taxis, el tipico “Yellow Cab” y las “Limousine”, que son cochazos que bajo un precio negociado te llevan de un lado a otro. En mi caso me monte en un Lincoln conducido por un joven con panuelo en la cabeza y padres afganos. Himmat, que asi se llamaba, me dijo que mi zona no era especialmente mala, cosa que me tranquilizo bastante, y que mientras mas al Este de Brooklyn fueras, mas peligro habia, asunto que pude comprobar facilmente en mi trayecto de metro.

   Y por fin llegue al 1082 de Pacific Street. Un bloque de ladrillos rojos, del que supongo, pronto podre decir varias cosas.

I can not read the future, but what happened yesterday was something I was expecting since the day I bought my ticket to New York. I do not understand how a company like Swiss sells tickets MAD-ZRH-JFK with one stop in Zurich and connecting time of just one hour. The minimun delay produce that the connection is lost, and even if you arrive to Zurich on time, having to go through more filters and looking for the gates is not exactly the most relaxing experience of the day.

The fact is that when it arrived to Zurich two hours late, my plane to New York was flying already (and it was not the only one, the captain said that we were 90 passengers on that flight with a similar problem but different destination) . At that moment I knew that Swiss had no more flights to JFK that day, so I was imagining spending a night in Zurich and a succulent compesation in my pocket .... My naive! What they did was re-booked my flight and sending me to Frankfurt to fly from there with Lufthansa. In short, I finally did MAD-ZRH-FRA-JFK, taking three aircraft and arriving to New York almost five hours late.

     So, where is "the good luck"?. Well, "The Good Luck (La Buena Suerte)" is a book that my good friend Hugo recommended me and that It was going to be my reading during the long journeys that await me ......, then, I'll have to re-read, because yesterday , due to the long delay, I almost finish it complety., only 25 pages left. From here I recommend it to everyone. It is a very easy and fast book to read and is suitable both for you and your children. It is a story that teaches you how "lucky", good and bad, comes and goes, but as the "Good Luck", must be sought and cultivated.

Brooklyn

     My arrival at JFK was almost 10 o'clock at night when I should have arrived at 4 pm. For a while I was mulling over whether those hours should take a taxi heading to Brooklyn, where my accomodation is, or continue with the original plan to reach by public transport. For economic reasons and adventurous spirit, I chose the second option.

    At JFK you can take the "Airtrain". It costs 5$ and takes you to various stations in Brooklyn where it connects with the subway. In my case, once in the subway just had to make a couple of transfers and get to my accommodation .... so I did, but what happened? That when I arrived to my station , I decided not to get off the wagon and continue until, at least I see one visually more welcoming .... what I mean??. I have not any kind of racial prejudice at all, but I am also aware that we do not live in the "World of the lollipop and cotton candy." Across the metro ride only black and latin guys with gang member aspect and dangerous looking got in and got off the wagon. I of course, alone, whitey, looking dead after an interminable trip and the bags full of gadgets, I didnt feel the situation what we could say "safe." So once it gets to my station, without being one of the worst I had seen, I decided to continue heading west into Manhattan and end up taking a taxi to my accomodation. I did not want at all to get to an unfamiliar neighborhood at 10 pm and walk 4 blocks over loaded with more gifts than Santa Claus. I've had a bad experience at a lost station in India and I do not want to resubmit my heart to such shocks.

     Finally I went down before reaching Manhattan, went out to the street and I took a taxi, which actually is not a taxi. In NYC there are two types of taxis, the typical "Yellow Cab" and "Limousine", which are big cars under a negotiated price that take you from one place to another. In my case, mounted on a Lincoln driven by a young guy with turban and Afghan parents. Himmat, that was his name, told me that my area was not particularly bad, which reassured me a lot, and that the more you were East of Brooklyn, The most dangerous it is, a matter that I could see easily in my underground journey.

     And finally I got to 1082 Pacific Street. A red brick block that I supose that soon I would have some things to say.

Manhattan Bridge & Chinatown

La ciudad de Nueva York posee dos puentes miticos de obligada visita, el famoso Puente de Brooklyn y el algo menos conocido Puente de Manhattan. Los dos nacen en Brooklyn, muy cerca el uno del otro, y ambos son simbolos de esta ciudad.

   Como en una anterior visita a la ciudad recorri el de Brooklyn, esta vez me tocaba atravesar el de Manhattan, y he de decir, que despues de patearme a conciencia ambos, soy incapaz de tener un favorito. Cada uno tiene un encanto y personalidad especial, y asi como el primero es mas popular y transitado, el segundo tiene una esencia y unas vistas que le hacen muy particular.

   El puente de Brooklyn consta de dos niveles, el inferior, por donde transitan los vehiculos, y el superior, que se puede atravesar caminando. Es habitual encontrarse a muchos neoyorkinos corriendo o montando en bicicleta, al menos, cuando estuve yo, y para aquel entonces era Enero y hacia menos de diez grados bajo cero. Aparte es un trayecto muy visitado por turistas, en cambio, en esta visita al puente de Manhattan creo que no me he cruzado con ninguno, y eso que he pasado casi dos horas en el. Las vistas desde aqui me gustan incluso mas que desde el de Brooklyn, ya que desde este, puedes observar y fotografiar, aparte del Skyline y el Downtown, el propio puente de Brooklyn.

   Mientras atraviesas el puente, en ocasiones el ruido es ensordecedor, ya que al mismo nivel por el que van los peatones, ademas de pasar los vehiculos, tambien lo hacen varias lineas de metro al aire libre. En mi opinion esto es lo que lo hace especial y por lo que a mi me ha gustado tanto.

   Precisamente aqui he conocido a Harold, un empleado del Metro que trabaja dando paso a los trenes y asi evitar colisiones. Harold, al verme haciendo fotografias se ha acercado y hemos estado charlando durante un buen rato sobre modelos de camaras y fotografia en general,..., un tio majo este Harold, lo que no se es si se le habra pasado algun tren mientras charlabamos.

Otra cosa que me ha gustado de este puente es que si lo atraviesas viniendo desde Brooklyn, cuando vas llegando al final puedes ver unas azoteas plagadas de graffitis que constrastan muy bien con los rascacielos al fondo. Una de mis vistas favoritas hasta el momento, y hay muchas!!

Al final del Puente de Manhattan se encuentra Canal Street, y alli llegamos a Chinatown. Sin lugar a dudas esta es la Chinatown mas grande que he visto y seguramente la mas grande del Mundo. Es como realmente visitar China pero al estilo Neoyorkino. Practicamente el 100% de los negocios de la zona son chinos y la gente que por alli anda son de dicha nacionalidad.

Aqui puedes encontrar practicamente cualquier cosa, desde cualquier producto tipico de alimentacion, a falsificaciones que te ofrecen por catalogo a escondidas, hasta locales de masaje y reflexologia cuyo interior seguramente ofrezca otro tipo de servicios diversos.

New York City has two mythical bridges wich visit is a must, the famous Brooklyn Bridge and the somewhat lesser known Manhattan Bridge. Both born in Brooklyn, very close to each other, and both are symbols of this city.

As in a previous visit to New York I crossed the Brooklyn one, now it was time to cross the Manhattan one, and I must say that after thoroughly walk them, I can not have any favorite. Each one has a special charm and personality, and as the first one is more popular and crowded, the second one has an essence and views which makes it very special.

   The Brooklyn Bridge has two levels, downstairs, where vehicles transit, and the top which can be crossed on foot. It is very common to find lots of newyorkers running or biking, at least when I was there, and by then it was January and it was less than ten degrees below zero. Also it is very popular walk for tourists, in contrast, in this visit to the Manhattan Bridge i didn't find any tourist, and I've spent nearly two hours on it. I like, even more, the views from here than from the Brooklyn one. From here, you can observe and photograph, not only the Downtown and Skyline but also the Brooklyn Bridge itself.

   While passing through the bridge, sometimes noise is deafening. At the same level that pedestrians are passing vehicles and also several outdoor underground lines. In my opinion this is what makes it special and what I liked so much.

   Here I met Harold, a Metro employee who works giving way to trains and thus avoid collisions. When he saw me making pictures came to me and we' were talking for a while on models of cameras and photography in general ,..., a nice guy this Harold. I hope there were no problems with trains during our conversation.

Another thing I liked about this bridge is that if you cross coming from Brooklyn, when you coming to the end you can see a rooftop full of graffiti that a contrast nicely with the skyscrapers in the background. One of my favourite New York views at the moment, and there are a lot!!!

At the end of Manhattan Bridge is Canal Street, and there we got to Chinatown. this is the largest Chinatown I've seen and certainly the biggest in the world. It's like actually visiting China but with the New Yorker style.

Virtually 100% of businesses in the area are Chinese and people that goes there are of that nationality. Here you can find almost anything, from any traditional feeding product, to counterfeit that offer sneak through a catalog, to massage and reflexology locals wich interior surely offer other miscellaneous services.

Pacific Loft Guesthouse & Brooklyn (Part II)

No quiero dejar Nueva York sin hablar del lugar donde me he hospedado, Pacific Loft Guesthouse, en el barrio de Brooklyn.

Antes de ello, es importante mencionar que encontrar un alojamiento digno y a un precio razonable en Nueva York, es bastante complicado. Sobre todo si lo que buscas es estar en Manhattan. Quiza en ese caso, la opcion mas barata sea buscar un albergue y acabar compartiendo habitacion con desconocidos. Yo personalmente es una opcion que no contemplo salvo emergencia y circunstancias especiales, pero que entiendo que haya quien, o se vea obligado, o bien, no le importe con tal de ahorrarse unos buenos dolares.

Como ya he dicho, Pacific Loft Guesthouse se encuentra en Brooklyn, cerca de la estacion de Franklin Avenue, a 20 minutos de Manhattan en metro. De primeras, si te ocurre como a mi, que llegue a las diez de la noche, puede que el barrio y el aspecto del edificio te dejen preocupado, pero es solo una primera impresion a la que no hay que darle demasiada importancia.

   El edificio consta de 3 plantas, las dos superiores son habitaciones con literas donde compartes espacio con otras personas, y la planta baja donde hay una sala comun con television, cocina, aseo y una habitacion privada, que es donde me aloje yo.

   A mi personalemnte la habitacion me ha parecedido perfecta, la cama es comoda, la habitacion acojedora, tienen un calefactor que funciona perfectamente y conexion a internet a altisima velocidad.

   Asi que por 40 euros la noche!!, Si, Si!! 40 euros, que mas puedes pedir. Yo personalemente volvere aqui en mi proxima visita a Nueva York y os recomiendo a todos, que si no buscais lujos y os apetece conocer otra cara de NY, os paseis por alli.

   El barrio, finalmente ha sido lo mejor de mi estancia en Nueva York, quiza tal vez porque en mi primera visita hice un repaso exhaustivo de Manhattan, y esta vez he descubierto algo nuevo y tan autentico que finalmente me ha fascinado.

   Lo que en un primer momento me pudo parecer un poco peligroso, finalemnte se convirtio en un sitio familiar, en el que por supuesto, ves cosas duras, pero si te adaptas y te integras, empiezas a formar parte del barrio. Casi lo que me ha pasado a mi, habiendo conocido en estos dias, en el Deli concretamente, a algun que otro peculiar vecino.

I do not want to leave New York without mentioning the place where I stayed, Pacific Loft Guesthouse in Brooklyn.

   Before that, it is important to mention that finding decent accommodation at a reasonable price in New York, is quite complicated. Especially if you're looking to be in Manhattan. Maybe in that case, the cheapest option is to seek a hostel and sharing room with strangers. I personally dont contemplate this option, except emergency and special circumstances, but I understand that some people have no chance or dont mind it and preffer to save some good dollars.

   As I said, Pacific Loft Guest House is located in Brooklyn, near the Franklin Avenue station, 20 minutes from Manhattan by subway. At first sight, if you get there like me, at ten in the evening, the neighborhood and the appearance of the building leave you worried, but it is only a first impression to which we should not attach too much importance.

   The building has 3 floors, the upper two are bunk rooms where you share space with other people, and the ground floor, where there is a common room with TV, kitchen, bathrom and a private room where I stayed.

   In my opinion, and for me, my room was perfect. The bed is confortable, cozy room, heater that works perfectly and fast conexion to Internet.

   So, for 40 euros per night!! Yes, 40 euros!!, what else could you ask for. Ill be back here on my next visit to New York and I recommend it to everyone who is not looking for luxury and want to see another side on NY.

   The neighbourhood has been finally the best of my stay in New York, perhaps because in my first visit I did a thorough review of Manhattan, and this time I discovered something new and so authentic that finally has fascinated me.

What at first seem a little dangerous if you are not used to, finally become kind of familiar, which of course, things to look tough, but if you adapt and integrate yourself, you start to become part of the neighborhood. Very nearly to what happened to me, having met to some neighbors at the Deli.

Interpol- NYC

   Quiero comenzar este ultimo post sobre Nueva York con musica. Los neoyorkinos Interpol son uno de mis "Imprescindibles". Precisamente este sabado pasado tocaron en mi ciudad natal, Madrid, y si no fuera porque yo estaba en la suya, hubiera estado alli. Fue una grata alegria recibir la llamada de mi buen amigo Cesar desde el concierto, el y mis hermanos Pablo, Joan y Hugo no se lo perdieron..., a mi tambien me dais envidia!

   Ayer abandone Nueva York y espero que no por mucho tiempo, ya que en mi experiencia como viajero del Mundo, si que tengo un favorito, y este es NYC.

   Estoy enamorado de esta ciudad, su ritmo, su olor, su color, su gente, sus barrios, su modernidad y su decrepitud, la mezcla de culturas, la cultura precisamente que se respira por todas partes...., no se, son un monton de cosas que no podria terminar de decir aqui,..., esta ciudad me inspira, y espero algun dia, poder vivir aqui.

   Respecto a mi visita, he de decir que 3 dias no son suficiente, NYC tiene mucho para ver y disfrutar. Desde museos oficiales, hasta el propio metro que es otro museo en si mismo. El gran Central Park, el Downtown, la Fifth Avenue, Harlem..., no se, son mil y ahora no voy a enumerarlos uno a uno. Si vienes, te recomiendo una buena guia, y andar, esta ciudad se descubre por si sola y es un estimulo para los cinco sentidos.

   I begin this last post about New York with music. The newyorkers, Interpol, are one of my "Indispensable". Just this past Saturday they played in my hometown, Madrid, and due to my visit to their town, it was impossible for me to assist. It was a pleasant joy to receive the call of my good friend Cesar from the concert, he and my brothers Pablo, Joan and Hugo didnt miss it,..., I envy you too!

   Yesterday I left New york and hopefully not for long, because in my experience as world traveller, I have a favourite, and this is NYC.

   Im in love with this city, its rhythm, its smell, its color, its people, its neighborhoods, its modernity and its decrepitude, the mixture of cultures, culture is precisely what breathes everywhere...., I dont know, many others things and it is impossible to finish, this city inspires me, and I hope, one day, to live here.

   About my visit, I must say that 3 days is not enought. NYC has a lot of things to see and enjoy. From museums to the subway, which is a museum in itself. The great Central Park, Downtown, Fifth Avenue, Harlem..., a thousand of things and Im not going to list them one by one now. If you come, take a good book guide, and walk, this city is discovered by itself and is a stimulus for the five senses.

Greyhound Bus & Washington DC (Part I)

Greyhound
Mi primer desplazamiento dentro de los Estados Unidos, desde Nueva York hasta Washington, ha sido en un autobus de la compania Greyhound. Un viaje de cuatro horas que se ha convertido en algo realmente agradable, ya que el pasiaje que se puede observar a traves de la ventanilla en esta epoca del año, es espectacular, mas aun si no estas acostumbrado a la geografia y vida natural de Norteamerica. Los marrones del Otoño, la vida salvaje como ciervos y distintas aves o las construcciones tipicas de la zona hacen de la vista un escenario de pelicula.

El autobus, sin ser ninguna modernidad, es bastante comodo, ademas dispone de wifi, y su precio, muy asequible, 12 euros (17$) para un trayecto de 365 kilometros.

Capital View Hostel

En Washington DC he estado hospedado en un hostel llamado "Capital View". Este es un hostel de alta calidad, y se nota nada mas entrar; limpio, moderno, con unas instalaciones impecables. Cuidan mucho las normas y te lo hacen saber mientras haces el Check-in. Una de ellas es la de no llevar zapatos dentro del edificio,..., pero no es mayor problema ya que tienen una moqueta muy limpia y blandita.

   Asi como dije en un post anterior, que el tema de compartir habitacion no entraba dentro de mis planes, he aqui una de las excepciones, y es que el alojamiento en Washington es demasiado caro para mi presupuesto, asi que he optado por una habitacion doble compartida. Tuve la suerte de pasar la primera noche solo, asi que contento por ello, de todos modos, en mi segunda noche aparecio Stefano, un chico italiano que trabaja en Disneyworld (Orlando) y que acababa de llegar a Washington para disfrutar de sus dos dias libres. Realmente me alegro de su visita, fue agradable compartir una charla con el, y me hizo plantearme que tampoco esta tan mal compartir habitacion, sobre todo por el ahorro economico que ello supone y por conocer gente nueva que te puede aportar cosas diferentes, aun asi, con toda la electronica que me acompana, prefiero la independencia.

Washington DC (Parte I)

   Mi primer dia en Washington ha sido una autentica pateada, de doce a quince kilometros, segun Google Maps, eso si, muy bien aprovechados. En un dia visite los puntos clave de Washington a excepcion del Pentagono y supongo por supuesto que de algo mas,... pero basicamente, fue un dia de lo mas completo.

   Debo decir que no tenia nada preparado, y dando por hecho que todos los caminos llevan a Roma, en este caso, a la Casa Blanca, sali a la calle sin tener mucha idea de lo que iba a ver pero suponiendo que tarde o temprano las cosas iban a aparecer. Y asi ocurrio, despues de preguntar a varias personas como llegar a la Casa Blanca, alli llegue, y desde ahi, ya todo fue coser y cantar e ir encontrandome lo que tenia que visitar:

1.La Casa Blanca: Que decir de La Casa Blanca? Pues nada que no sepais, que es cierto que es una casa, y que es blanca, y que actualmente vive en ella Barak Hussein Obama y familia.

2.Washington Monument: El Washington Monument es el famoso obelisco que todos reconocemos. Se encuentra en el centro del conjunto monumental de Washington, entre el Capitolio y el Lincoln Memorial. Se puede subir a lo mas alto.

3.World War II Memorial: Situado entre el Lincoln Memorial y el Washington Monument. Consiste en una plaza con una gran fuente, en la que cada bloque que observais en la foto contiene un ramo de laureles con el nombre de cada estado en homenaje a los americanos que lucharon en aquella guerra.

4.Vietnam Veterans Memorial: Tambien conocereis el famoso muro negro en el que estan escritos los nombres de todos los fallecidos en la guerra del Vietnam por el bando americano.

4.Lincoln Memorial: El lugar donde se encuentra la famosa estatua de Lincoln sentado. Otro simbolo de Estados Unidos.

5.Cementerio de Arlington: Realmente sorprendente y una visita obligada. Se encuentra a la espalda del Lincoln Memorial. Se llega cruzando el rio a traves del Arlington Memorial Bridge. Es impresionante ver tanta lapida junta. Aqui se encuentra enterrado entre otros John F. Kennedy y su hermano Robert.

6.Capitolio: Los hilos que junto a Wall Street en NY manejan el Mundo.

Greyhound

   My first travel within the United States, from New York to Washington, has been on a Greyhound bus. A four-hour trip that has turned into something really nice, since the views that can be seen through the window at this time of year is spectacular, even more if you're not used to the geography and wildlife of North America . Fall browns, wildlife such as deer and various kind of birds or typical buildings of the area make it a movie scenery.


   The bus, without being too modern, is
quite comfortable, also has wifi, and its price, very affordable 12 euros (17$) for a distance of 230 miles.

Capital View Hostel

   In Washington DC I have been staying at a hostel called "Capital View". This is a high quality hostel, and you can feel it as soon you go inside, it is clean, modern, it has very good facilities. They care a lot of rules and you do know it while you are checking-in. One of this rules is not to wear shoes inside the building ,..., but it is not a greater problem as the carpet is very clean and soft.

   As I said in a previous post, the issue of room sharing was not within my plans, but here there is one of the exceptions, due to the expensive rates in Washington, too much for my budget, so I booked a shared double room . I was lucky enough when I spent the first night alone, so happy about that, anyway my second night appeared Stefano, an Italian boy who is working at Disneyworld (Orlando) and who was in Washington to enjoy his two days off. I'm really glad of his visit, it was enjoyable to share a talk with him, and made me consider that it is not so bad sharing a room, especially thinking in economic savings and meeting new people who can offer something different to you, even so, with all the electronics that accompany me, I prefer the independence.

Washington DC (Part I)

My first day in Washington was a extreme walking day, eight to ten miles, according to Google Maps, but really usefull. In one day I visited the key points of Washington with the exception of the Pentagon and I suppose something else, but basically, it was a very complete day.

I must say that I had nothing prepared, and assuming that all roads lead to Rome, in this case, to the White House, I went out to the street without a big idea of what I was going to see, but assuming that sooner or later things would appear. And so it happened, after ask to several people how to get to the White House, I reached it, and from there, everything went smoothly and I found what I had to visit:

1.The White House: What can I say about The White House that all of you dont know yet? Not too much, it is true, it is a house, and it is white, and nowadays Barak Hussein Obama and family are living there.

2.Washington Monument: It is the famous obelisk that all of you know already. It is in the middle between the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial. You can go to the top ot it.

3.World War II Memorial: Placed between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It is a square with a big fountain, where every block that you can see in the picture below contain a laurel branch with the name of every state honoring the veterans who fought in that war.

4.Vietnam Veterans Memorial: The famous black wall with the name of all the deceased soldiers in the Vietnam War

5.Lincoln Memorial: The place where the famous Lincoln statue is. Another symbol of the United States.

5.Arlington Cemetery: Really surprising and a must see. It is behind Lincoln Memorial, and you have to cross the river through the Arlington Memorial Bridge. It is impresing to see so many tombstones together. Here are JFK and his brother Robert tombs.

6.Capitol: The threads together Wall Street in NY that run the World.

Washington (Part II) & Amtrak to Chicago

Manel y Rita

Despues del agotador dia que anteriormente os he contado, pase por un supermercado cercano para comprar algo de comida y asi cenar en la sala comun del hostel. Esta fue una buena idea, porque ademas de ahorrarme unos dolares y cenar relativamente bien, mientras me comia mi ensalada escuche a un chico y a una chica hablando en un idioma "extrano", pero familiar,..., era catalan. Ellos son Manel y Rita, dos trabajadores del Bulli, el restaurante de Ferran Adria, que estaban en Washington pasando una temporada mientras trabajaban en dos de los restaurantes del famoso cocinero espanol, Jose Andres, ese que tenia un programa en la 1 no hace mucho tiempo, y al que al dia siguiente conoci en persona.

Conocer a Manel y Rita fue genial. Pasamos la noche juntos y quedamos para ir al dia siguiente a uno de los museos gratuitos de la ciudad.

National Museum of Natural History

Washington es un destino ideal si lo que te gustan son los museos. Aqui tienes infinidad de ellos y lo mejor de todo, son gratuitos. Entre una larga lista entre la que puedes elegir museos de arte, naturaleza, historia y otras cosas diversas como el museo del espia,..., yo elegi en National Museum of Natural History. Hacia mucho que no iba a un museo de este tipo, desde mi epoca en el Instituto, y me apetecia, estoy un poco cansado de estatuas y cuadros.

La visita al museo estuvo bien, varias salas con restos arqueologicos, insectos, antiguos hominidos, piedras preciosas... Lo hicimos a buen ritmo porque mi tren a Chicago salia a las cuatro de la tarde, y antes de ello queriamos ir a comer a uno de los restaurantes del famoso Jose Andres.

Restaurante Oyamel

Despues del museo fuimos al resturante Oyamel. Un restaurante mejicano que segun he leido en Internet, la mujer de Obama reconoce que esta entre sus favoritos, pues no me extrana!!. Comimos ceviche de varias clases y delicias mejicanas, todo EXQUISITO!! Quiza lo mas rico que haya comido nunca, y encima por ir con mis nuevos amigos, un 50% de descuento en la factura. En total nos gastamos 13 dolares por cabeza, propina incluida, que aun habiendo sido al precio normal no es tanto, y la comida fue realmente deliciosa.

Es aqui donde conoci a Jose Andres. Llego al restaurante porque estaban haciendo una sesion fotografica para un nuevo restaurante que van a abrir en Las Vegas. Nos acercamos a ver el trabajo que estaban haciendo y Manel nos presento, estrecho mi mano y dijo "Como estas Sergio?", a lo que yo respondi, "Bien, gracias, y tu?"

Tren a Chicago

   Despues de comer tuvimos que volver al hostel a recoger mi equipaje, y por entretenerme mas de la cuenta con Manel casi pierdo mi tren a Chicago. Si no fuera porque encontre un taxi a la primera, lo pierdo seguro.

   Llegue a Union Station con la lengua fuera, menos mal que no estaba lejos de mi hostel. Como era la primera vez que viajaba en tren por los Estados Unidos, no sabia lo que iba a tardar realmente hasta llegar a montarme. Normalmente suele haber filtros, ademas de tener que canjear el billete que me habia comprado por Internet. Afortunadamente fue todo bien, aunque no me quite el sofoco hasta llevar un buen rato de camino.

   Cuando me sente, al lado tenia un chico con chaqueta militar que lo primero que me dijo fue: "Pense que lo perdia", entonces yo pense: "debe ser que a los que llegan tarde nos ponen juntos". Se llamaba Martin, y venia viajando desde Orlando. Estaba volviendo a casa porque habia tenido un grave problema con su novia, la cual le habia robado 10000 dolares de la cuenta bancaria y habia desaparecido. Pobrecillo, se le notaba bastante jodido y no tenia un misero dolar, asi que le invite a cenar en el coche restaurante.

   Ademas en este viaje he conocido a Richard, un adulto viajero que estaba atravesando el pais en tren, con la diferencia que el lo hacia en compartimento con cama. Richard se acerco a mi cuando me vio tirando fotos, y estuvimos hablando un buen rato de la vida en general y de politica en particular. Su vision de la situacion era bastante negativa, con lo que yo estaba totalmente de acuerdo.

Respecto al viaje, todo fue bien, muy comodo, se duerme bien aunque viajes en butaca. Se reclinan perfectamente y son muy anchas. Aun siendo un viaje de 17 horas y teniendo un poco de retraso al llegar, no se me hizo en absoluto largo. Justo antes de llegar a Chicago estuvimos parados casi media hora, aunque las vistas de las Torres Sears desde el sitio que nos detuvimos eran excelentes.

Manel y Rita

After the exhausting day that I told you before, I made an stop at a nearby supermarket to buy some food and have dinner in the common room of the hostel. That was a good idea, saving a few dollars and eat relatively well, and also because while I was eating my salad, I listened to a boy and a girl talking in a "strange" language, but familiar ,..., it was catalan. They are Manel and Rita, two workers from El Bulli, Ferran Adria's restaurant, who were in Washington from a season while working at two restaurants of the famous Spanish chef Jose Andres, the one who had a TV program in the 1 Channel not long time ago, and the one that the next day that I met in person.

Meet Manel and Rita was grreat. We spent the night together and we went the next day to one of the free museums in the city.

National Museum of Natural History

Washington is an ideal destination if what you like are the museums. Here you have plenty of them and best of all, all are free. Among a long list to choose, there are museums of art, nature, history and other various things like spy museum ,..., I choosed the National Museum of Natural History. It was a long time since my last visit to a museum like this, since my time at the High School, and I am a bit tired of statues and paintings.

The visit to the museum was good, several rooms with archaeological remains, insects, ancient hominids, precious stones ... We did it quite quicky because my train to Chicago left at four in the afternoon, and before that we wanted to go eat to one of the restaurants of the famous Jose Andres.

Oyamel Restaurant

After the museum we went to Oyamel restaurant. A Mexican restaurant that I've read on the Internet, that Obama's wife says that is among his favorites, no wonder!!. We ate ceviche of various kinds and Mexican delicacies, all DELICIOUS! Maybe the most delicious thing I have ever eaten you, and thanks to my new friends, 50% discount on the bill. In total we spent 13 dollars each, tips included, although at normal price is not so much, and the food was really delicious.

Here is where I met Jose Andres. He got to the restaurant because they were doing a photo shoot session for a new restaurant in Las Vegas. We went to see the work they were doing and Manel introduced us, he shooked my hand and said "How are you doing Sergio?", and I replied, "Fine, thanks, and you?"

Train to Chicago

   After lunch we had to return to the hostel to collect my luggage, and I almost miss my train because I spent too long with Manel. Luckily I found a taxi soon, if not I miss my train for sure.

   I arrived at Union Station with my tongue out, luckily was not far from my hostel. As it was my first time traveling by train through the United States, I did not know how long would really take to get to ride. There is usually filters, I also had to exchange the ticket that I had purchased online. Fortunately everything went well, although I did not recover my breathe until a long time after.

   When I sat, next to me was a guy with a military jacket that the first thing that he said was: "I thought I miss it" then I thought, "It must be that late arrival people are sitting together." His name was Martin, and he came traveling from Orlando. He was going home because he had had a serious problem with his girlfriend, who had stolen him 10000$ from the bank account and had disappeared. Poor guy, he looked pretty fucked up and he did not have a miserable dollar, so I invited him to have dinner in the restaurant car.

Also on trip I met Richard, an adult traveler who was crossing the country by train, with the difference that he is doing it in bed compartment. Richard approached me when I was shooting photos, and we talked a long time about life in general and politics in particular. His vision of the situation was quite negative, with what I was in total agreement.

About the travel, everything went well, very comfortable, sleeping well, even traveling in a seat. Resting is perfectly and are very wide. Even with a journey of 17 hours and having a little late arriving, I did not feel it at all too long. Just before arriving in Chicago were stopped about half an hour, although the views of the Sears Tower from the place we stopped was excellent.

Chicago (Part I): Una ciudad de pelicula - A movie city

Mi tren desde Washington llego a la estacion de Union Station en Chicago a las diez de la manana. Despues de un refrescante y reconfortante cepillado de dientes en uno de los aseos de la estacion, me dirigi al hall principal de la misma donde tome mi desayuno y recupere fuerzas antes de emprender camino a pie hasta mi nuevo alojamiento. Vine a desayunar aqui expresamente porque esta es la famosa estacion donde se rodo la escena final de la pelicula Los Intocables. La estacion es grandiosa, tal y como se ve en la pelicula, aunque desafortunadamente por problemas logisticos con las baterias de mi camara, no pude inmortalizar la escena. Despues de tomarme unos huevos fritos y un par de tostadas con un zumo, cargue mochila a la espalda y me dirigi al hotel Parthenon en el barrio griego, no muy lejos de alli.

My train from Washington arrived at Union Station in Chicago at ten o'clock in the morning. After a refreshing and comforting teeth brushing at one of the toilets of the station, I headed to the main hall, where I took my breakfast and gather strength before taking footpath to my new home. I came here specifically to have breakfast because this is the famous station where they shot the final scene of the movie The Untouchables. The station is great, as you can see in the movie, but unfortunately due to logistical problems with the battery of my camera, I could not immortalize the scene. After taking two fried eggs and toast with juice, I loaded my backpack and headed to the Hotel Parthenon in Greektown, not far from there.

He de reconocer que en un principio cuando seleccione a Chicago como una de las ciudades de mi ruta, no lo hice por ningun interes en especial, si no mas bien por su nombre. No habia puesto demasiadas esperanzas en encontrar algo sorprendente por aqui, aunque no podia estar mas equivocado. Chicago es ALUCINANTE! La cuidad es un verdadero escenario de pelicula, quiza, aunque solo quiza, mas que Nueva York. Nada mas llegar y empezar a pasear todo te parecera familiar, desde las peliculas de gansters y Al Capone como la anteriormente mencionada "Los Intocables", hasta Batman y todas sus secuelas,..., si has visto alguna vez una de estas peliculas te dara la sensacion de ir caminando por Gotham City, de hecho, y despues de un poco de investigacion en Internet, descubri que parte de la ultima secuela de la pelicula, The Dark Knight fue rodada aqui mismo,..., supongo que las anteriores tambien estarian inspiradas en esta ciudad.

I must admit that at first when I choosed Chicago as one of the cities on my route, I did not do it by any special interest, if not rather by its famous name. I had not put much hope in finding something surprising around here, but I could not be more wrong. Chicago is AMAZING! The city is a real movie scenary, maybe, but only maybe, even more than New York. Upon arrival and starting your first walk around the city, everything will seem familiar, from the films of gangsters and Al Capone as the aforementioned "The Untouchables" to Batman and all its sequels ,..., if you've ever watched any of these movies, you will have the sensation of walking through Gotham City, in fact, and after a little research on the internet, I discovered that part of the last sequel of the movie, The Dark Knight was filmed right here and I assume that ,..., previous parts of the movie would also be inspired by this city.

La arquitectura tan particular de los edificios con halls espectaculares, el color gris y marron que predomina alla donde mires, el metro, que en la zona centro, llamada Loop, circula por el exterior... Sin lugar a dudas os recomiendo que en una visita a Estados Unidos no os perdais Chicago.

The very particular architecture of the buildings with spectacular halls, the gray and brown that dominates everywhere you look, the subway, in the center of the city, that is called Loop, runs around the outside ... No doubt, on a visit to the United States do not miss Chicago.

Chicago (Part II) - Millenium Park & Hancock Tower

-Millenium Park

Sin duda alguna Chicago tiene una visita obligada al Millenium Park. Es un parque en el cual nos podemos encontrar varios elementos que llaman realmente la atencion de cualquier persona.

1. Jay Pritzker Pavilion, que es un anfiteatro donde se realizan conciertos al aire libre.

2. Crown Fountain, creado por el espanol Jaume Plensa, y consiste en dos grandes bloques en los que van apareciendo, a traves de leds, distintas caras de ciudadanos de Chicago. En verano de las bocas de las caras salen dos chorros de agua y la gente las utiliza para refrescarse.

3. Cloud Gate o la "Alubia", como tambien ha sido bautizada no oficialmente. Realmente sorprendente, al menos a mi me lo parece. Es una especie de alubia gigante, como una gota de mercurio, que refleja parte la ciudad y las caras de los que alli estan al mismo tiempo. Realmente espectacular, y posiblemente desde ya, en el numero Uno de mi ranking personal de construcciones modernas mas bellas, superando a las anteriores campeoneas, las Torres Petronas.

Y como la cosa va de cine, esta alubia me recuerda muchisimo a una pelicula de mi infancia, "El Vuelo del Navegante" (que bonito es haber crecido en los 80).

-Millenium Park

No doubt, Chicago has a mandatory visit to Millennium Park. It is a park where you can find several elements that really call the attention of anyone.

1. Jay Pritzker Pavilion, it is a place where outdoor concerts are celebrated.

2. Crown Fountain, created by the Spanish Jaume Plensa, consists of two large blocks in which appear, through LEDs, different faces of Chicago citizens. In summer from the mouth of the faces runs a stream of water and people use it to refreshing.

3. Cloud Gate or the "Bean", as has also been named unofficially. Really surprising, at least I think so. It is a kind of giant bean, like a drop of mercury, which reflects part of the city and the faces of those who are there at the same time. Really spectacular, and possibly from now, the number one of my personal ranking of most beautiful modern stuffs, surpassing the previous champion, the Petronas Towers.

And how it's going about cinema, this bean reminds me a lot to a movie of my childhood, "The Flight of the Navigator" (how nice was growing up in the 80's).

-Hancock Tower

Otra visita que creo que deberia hacer todo aquel que vaya a Chicago, es subir a la Torre Hancock. Esta se encuentra al Norte de la Avenida Michigan, que por cierto es algo asi como la Quinta Avenida en Nueva York. Desde lo alto puedes contemplar la inmensidad de la ciudad de Chicago, asi como el enorme Lago Michigan, que porque te dicen que es un lago, si no apostarias todo a que es un mar o el mismo oceano. Subir vale 16,80$, un precio razonable ya que subir al Empire State o al Top of the Rock del Rockefeler Center de Nueva York, ya superan los 20$, y bueno si, es Nueva York, pero estas vistas no desmerecen en absoluto.

-Hanckok Tower

Another visit that everyone who goes to Chicago should make is going up to the top of the Hancock Tower. This building is located at north of Michigan Avenue, which is something like Fifth Avenue in New York. From the top you can contemplate the vastness of the city of Chicago, and also the huge Lake Michigan, that, because you know that it is a lake, if not you would bet all your money that you are seeing a sea or an ocean. Going up to the top cost 16.80$, a reasonable price. Going up to the top of the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock at Rockefeler Center in New York, already exceed 20$, and yes, it is New York, but these views do not detract at all .

Trinidad, la historia de Roby Lee y un "Thanksgiving Day" adelantado!!

   Lo que me ha ocurrido en el dia de hoy, es justo aquello que me gustaria responder cuando alguien me pregunta "por que te gusta viajar solo?".

   Yo soy un fiel defensor de los viajes en solitario, no porque no me guste viajar con amigos, o porque sea un bicho raro, si no porque lo que os voy a contar a continuacion, es lo que yo considero expimirle al maximo, todo el jugo a un viaje, y esto es algo que casi siempre ocurre cuando viajas solo y estas abierto ante lo desconocido.

   Mi dia en Trinidad no empezo con buen pie. Una mala noche en una habitacion demasiado fria y una mudanza en mitad de la misma a otra vacia, habian provocado que mi paseo diario empezara con el rollo un poco torcido y mas tarde que de costrumbre.

   Ademas, el pateo no estaba ofreciendo demasiado, poco mas que alguna foto interesante y eso si, poder ver como es la vida tipica norteamericana en un pueblo pequeno del Este de Colorado.

   Una de las cosas que queria hacer hoy, era acercarme por el restaurante donde desayune el dia anterior para terminar de hacer unas fotos que aun me quedaban pendientes. Afortunadamente, aunque en ese momento no me lo parecio tanto, el restaurante estaba cerrado.

   Como aun era pronto y el lado Este de la via del tren no me habia ofrecido mucho, decidi cruzar al otro lado y descubrir la parte Oeste del pueblo de Trinidad.

   Despues de un rato el otro lado, tampoco estaba viendo gran cosa. De hecho, haciendo una foto a una senal de trafico que indicaba mi camino, estuve a punto de darme la vuelta y volver a descansar al hotel.

Fue entonces cuando vi sobresalir de detras de un taller mecanico, el cartel giratorio de un restaurante 100% Americano. Ahi me dije: “venga, unas fotos desde lejos y pa casa”.

Mientras tiraba fotos de lejos, vi como desde dentro del restaurante alguien me hacia gestos con la mano; yo pensando que me estaban saludando, movi tambien la mia y entonces pense: "joder! si alguien me llama sera porque algo quiere", asi que sin dudarlo me acerque hasta alli. Despues descubri que aquellos gestos no eran saludos, si no que eran senales para que me fuera pensando la persona que los estaba haciendo, que yo era un inspector buscando problemas.

Me asome a la puerta y salude desde fuera. Dentro estaba Roby Lee, el propietario del legendario "Lee's Bar B.Q." de Trinidad, Colorado.

El "Lee's Bar B.Q." es un negocio con mas de 75 anos de historia, que ha pasado generacion tras generacion hasta llegar a las manos de Roby.

   Cuando entre dentro del restaurante fui directo hacia Roby, me presente, estreche su mano y le pedi permiso para utlilizar mi camara dentro de su restaurante, ya de paso le conte que era espanol y que estaba a mitad de camino de un viaje costa a costa. Rob me recibio con una hospitalidad insolita, no solo me dejaba hacer las fotos que quisiera sino que tambien me invito a degustar una de las delicias de su restaurante. Poco a poco fuimos cogiendo confianza mutuamente, y mientras yo hacia mis fotos y grababa algunos videos, el me iba preguntando y contacto cosas e ibamos charlando.

   El tiempo iba pasando y yo me encontraba bien agusto en el "Lee's Bar B.Q.". Entonces entro George Fernandez. Un vecino del restaurante que se unio a nuestra conversacion.

   George es un empleado jubilado de supermercado que hace tiempo invirtio en propiedades, teniendo ahora mismo varias casas a su nombre. Me quiso ensenar orgulloso, mientras nos fumabamos un Malboro XL en la calle, como estaba pintando una de sus casas.

Se iba haciendo tarde y estaba anocheciendo. Mi hotel no estaba cerca y tenia que pasar por unas zonas un poco feas, asi que le dije a mis nuevos amigos que tenia intenciones de ir marchando. Entonces Roby, que estaba sentado enfrente mia, me dijo muy amablemente que no me preocupara, que el me acercaba a mi hotel, y no solo eso, sino que tambien me invitaba a lo que me habia tomado.

Fue entonces cuando ocurrio lo mas insolito y algo que me dejo flipando por lo inesperado. Cuando nos montamos en el coche de Roby, un enorme Dodge ranchera, me hizo la pregunta del millon: "A ti te gusta la mota?" (para el que no lo sepa "mota" es una forma de llamar a la marihuana). Yo le respondi que bueno, que la marihuana y yo ya nos conociamos, pero que en mi viaje por Estados Unidos no queria tenerla cerca para evitar problemas innecesarios. El entonces me dijo que en el estado de Colorado la marihuana esta permitida para uso medicinal, que la vendian legal y oficialmente y que el disponia de un cupo de 100 dolares al mes, asi que si queria me invitaba a su casa a conocer a su mujer y a su perro y probar la mota medicinal del Colorado!!,........, mhhhhhh!! dejame que me lo piense!!... Pues claro man, llevame a tu casa y presentame a tu familia y bordamos el dia!!

Me llevo a su casa, donde conoci a Gen, su esposa. Una encantadora senora que me recibio igual que su marido habia hecho previamente.

En su casa estuve bastante tiempo, fumamos mota, bebimos te y hablamos muchisimo entre los tres. Hubo momentos de autentica emocion, ya que tanto para ellos, como para mi, aquello que estabamos viviendo era una experiencia inolvidable.

   What has happened to me today is just what I would like to respond when someone asks me "why do you like traveling alone?".

   I am a strong defender of traveling alone, not because I dont like to travel with friends, or because I am a weird guy. I like it because what I am going to tell you below is what I consider to travel until the last consequences, and this is only possible if you're alone and open to the unknown.

   My day in Trinidad did not start off right. A bad night in a too cold room and a moving in the middle of it to another one empty, had caused that my daily walk started with not a good mood and later of usual.

   Also, the walk was not offering too much, only some good pictures and of course, be able to see what life is like in a typical American small town in Eastern Colorado.

   One of the things I wanted to do this day, was going to the restaurant where I had breakfast yesterday to finish making some pictures that I had outstanding. Fortunately, although at that time I didnt think that, the restaurant was closed.

   As it was still early and the east side of the railroad had not given to me much, I decided to cross over and discover the western part of the town of Trinidad.

After a while, this side was neither giving me much. In fact, making a picture of a traffic signal I was almost turning back to the hotel to rest.

Then, I saw from behind a machine shop, the turning sign of a 100% American Restaurant. Then I said, "come on, some pictures from afar and back home."

   While I was shooting from afar, I watched how from inside the restaurant someone was doing hand gestures, I thought somebody was saying "hello", then I also moved mine. In that moment I thought: "Fuck! If someone calls me, maybe he wants something", so without hesitation I may go up there. After that I discovered that those gestures were not greetings, it was signals asking me to go far thinking that I was an inspector looking for troubles to the owner.

   I went to the door and greet from the outside. Inside was Rob Lee, the owner of the legendary "Lee's Bar B.Q." in Trinidad, CO.

   "Lee's Bar B.Q." is a business with more than 75 years of history, generation after generation has passed down until reach the hands of Rob.

   When I got inside the restaurant I went straight to Rob, I introduced myself, shake his hand and asked his permission for shooting pictures inside the restaurant, and also I told him that I was Spanish and that I was in the halfway of a travel coast to coast . Rob's hospitality was amazing, not only allowed me to take the pictures, he also invited me to try one of the delights of his restaurant. Little by little we were picking mutual trust, and while I was shooting my pictures and some videos, he was asking and talking to me.

   Time was passing and I was very feeling so comfortable at "Lee's Bar B.Q." Then George Fernandez came ito the restaurant. A neighbor who joined our conversation.

   George is a retired supermarket employee who has long invested in property, now he has several houses under his name. He wanted to show me proud, while we were smoking a cigarette in the street, as he was painting one of his houses.

It was getting late and it was getting dark. My hotel was not close and had to go through some areas a bit scary, so I told to my new friends that I had intentions to go back home. Then Rob, who was sitting in front of mine, kindly told me not to worry, that he was going to get me to my hotel, and not only that, he also invited me to what I had eaten.

It was then when it happened the most unusual and something that left me freaking out for the unexpected. When we got in to Rob's car, a big Dodge station wagon, he made the million dollar question: "Do you like "mota"?" (For those who does not know what "mota" means, it is another name for the marijuana). I answered that yes, that marijuana and I already knew each other, but in my trip to the United States I dont want to try it to avoid bif problems. Then he told me that in Colorado is allowed the marijuana for medical use, it is sold legally and officially, and he had a quota of 100 dollars a month, so if I want, he invite me to his his home to meet his wife and his dog and try the medicinal Colorado's mota!!,........, mhhhhh! Let me think about it!!... Of course man, take me home and introduce me to your family and finish a pefect day!

He got me home, where I met Gen, his wife. A lovely lady who welcomed me like her husband had done previously.

I spent long time at their house, we smoked mota, drank tea and we three talked a lot, there were moments of genuine emotion, as much for them as for me, what we were doing was an unforgettable experience.

   After a long time and several pipes, Roby took me to my hotel.

   Meet Roby and Gen at their home has been an incredible experience, a "Thanksgiving Day in advance" because this typically American celebration is in two days.

   I hope that now you have understood why I I like traveling alone,....., because it is, ......., PRICELESS.

   Despues de mucho rato y varias pipas, Rob me acerco a mi hotel.

   Conocer a Roby y a Gen en su propio hogar ha sido una experiencia increible, un "Dia de Accion de Gracias por adelantado" ya que esta celebracion tipicamente americana es dentro de dos dias.

   Espero que ahora hayais entendido porque me gusta viajar solo,......, porque esto........ NO TIENE PRECIO.

Kansas City (Part I): Gladstone Manor y mi estancia con la familia Rogers

Hace ya unos dias que pase por Kansas City (Missouri), y si no fuera porque las veinticuatro horas del dia no son suficientes, ya habria escrito sobre ello hace tiempo.

Uno de los dos post que voy a escribir sobre KC se lo quiero dedicar en exclusiva a la familia Rogers, Bruce, Veda y a su hijo Chris, porque despues de como me han tratado se merecen eso y mucho mas. Y por supuesto en este post os voy a ensenar su espectacular casa, donde he estado alojado y donde me he sentido como en mi propio hogar.

Conoci a Veda y a Bruce a traves de Internet mientras preparaba mi viaje buscando alojamiento en KC. Encontre la pagina web de su casa (Gladstone Manor B&B), donde ofrecen tres preciosas habitaciones donde poder alojarse. Creo en las vibraciones y no suelo fallar, desde un primer momento las recibi y muy buenas de esta familia, ademas me parecio genial la oportunidad de alojarme en una bonita casa de estilo victoriano construida en 1899.

Para empezar, la manera de reservar una habitacion en su casa ya era diferente a los demas alojamientos de mi viaje. En su caso, lo que tuve que hacer es escribirles un correo personal y hacerles una solicitud. Yo les escribi contandoles mis planes y ademas, pidiendoles una ayuda extra, ya que necesitaba comprar una entrada para un partido de futbol americano y pensaba, aunque finalmente no fue necesario, que necesitaba una direccion estadounidense. Finalmente no fue para una entrada, si no para un billete de tren para lo que necesite su direccion. Veda muy amablemente se encargo de recibirlo y de guardarlo hasta mi llegada.

   Despues de varios emails en ambos sentidos, llego el dia de mi llegada. En uno de sus correos, Veda me dijo que cuando llegara a la estacion les hiciera una llamada a casa, y asi Bruce vendria a recogerme. Eso hice, eran las siete y media de la manana y Bruce tardo solo cinco minutos en aparecer.

   Cuando llegamos a casa, Veda me dio una calida bienvenida, y no tardo un minuto en decirme lo mucho que le gustaba este blog. Me preguntaron si habia desayunado algo, y ante mi respuesta negativa, Bruce se puso inmediatamente a prepararme un desayuno que me supo a gloria.

   Durante el desayuno, estuvimos un buen rato hablando de varias cosas, pero tan pronto salio el tema de la politica estadounidense nos olvidamos de todo lo demas. Sin entrar en detalles que no vienen al caso, si que quiero mencionar que la vision de esta familia se parece mucho a la de la mia propia, asi que ese detalle ademas, me hizo sentir aun mejor y mas en casa que nunca.

   Cuando termine mi desayuno, mi habitacion estaba lista, sin necesidad de esperar, como es habitual en otros sitios, a una hora de "check-in", vamos, como si fueras a casa de unos amigos o de unos familiares. Pero eso no es todo, si no que habian preparado la planta superior para mi solo, la cual consta de un dormitorio enorme, un bonito aseo y una sala de billar impresionante. Esta habitacion logicamente, era mas cara que las otras dos que eran mas pequenas, pero Bruce y Veda la habian preparado para mi sin ningun tipo de coste adicional.

Lo primero que hice cuando me vi con todo aquello para mi solo, fue prepararme un buen bano con mucha espuma para recuperarme del agotador viaje de trece horas en autobus, con transbordo incluido a las cuatro de la manana en la gelida y recondita estacion de Des Moines. Despues de esto me tumbe en la cama con la intencion de trabajar un poco con el ordenador, pero me fue imposible y cai fulminado quedando traspuesto dos o tres horas.

Cuando desperte baje a la cocina donde estaba Veda y le comente que saldria a dar un paseo por el barrio. Ella me dio un monton de indicaciones y buenos consejos sobre donde podia ir, ademas de recomendarme, no sin antes ofrecerse ella misma a prepararme algo, un restaurante cercano.

Despues del paseo, de una inesperada sesion de musica religiosa africana en una iglesia sudanesa presbiteriana que me encontre por casualidad y de una rica y reconfortante sopa de noodles al estilo vietnamita en el restaurante que Veda me habia recomendado, volvi a mi super habitacion para descansar y preparar el dia siguiente en el que un partido de futbol americano me estaba esperando.

Pase una buena noche, la cama era muy comoda y mi sueno fue continuado, algo de lo que no estoy disfrutando demasiado en este viaje. Habia quedado con Veda en tomar mi desayuno a las ocho de la manana. Cuando baje a esa hora me encontre con un increible repertorio de ricos alimentos,... frutas, tostadas, zumo, cereales..., esta familia cuida hasta el mas minimo detalle, y eso es de agradecer.

        Cuando acabe mi desayuno, Bruce y Veda me dieron otra alegria, y es que me dijeron que su hijo Chris me acercaria al estadio. Esto fue un gran favor, ya que llegar hasta el estadio desde su casa suponia un largo camino que ademas no tenia del todo claro. Ademas, el dia anterior yo le pregunte a Chris si sabia si habria algun problema en meter mi camara al estadio, ya que lei en la web del equipo que no estaban permitidos equipos profesionales, y mi camara, sin ser pro, si se puede considerar semiprofesional. Chris se tomo la molestia de llamar al estadio y preguntarles sobre este tema en particular.... realmente no tengo palabras para agradecer como esta familia se ha portado conmigo.

         Una vez de regreso a su casa, despues de otra gran experiencia en este pais y que luego os contare. Me dijeron que me quedara en su casa todo el tiempo que hiciera falta, ya que mi tren destino a Trinidad no salia hasta las once de la noche. Para acabar, a eso de las siete de la tarde, Bruce me acerco a la estacion.

        Bruce y Veda son una pareja encantadora, me han tratado con mucho carino y con una hospitalidad insuperable. Ahora mismo me estoy imaginando a Veda en la cocina, leyendole en voz alta este articulo a Bruce, como hizo con otro el dia que nos conocimos. Desde aqui les quiero dar las gracias y os recomiendo a todos los que paseis por Kansas City, que les hagais una visita. Por cierto, su preciosa casa esta en venta porque se quieren mudar a Denver donde vive su hija, asi que si alguien esta interesado, ya sabe lo que hacer.

         Gracias Bruce y Veda, mi estancia con vosotros ha sido muy dulce, de verdad que os echo de menos.

A few days ago I stayed at Kansas City (Missouri), and if it were not because twenty-four hours per day are not enough, I would have written about it long ago.

One of the two post that I am writing about KC, is dedicated exclusively to Rogers family, Bruce, Veda and their son Chris, because how they treated me deserve that and much more. And of course in this post I am going to show his spectacular house, where I have stayed and where I have felt like in my own home.

I met Bruce and Veda through Interent while I was preparing my trip and looking for accommodation in KC. I found their house's website (Gladstone Manor B&B), which offers three beautiful rooms where you can stay. I trust on vibrations and I dont use to be wrogn, since the first moment I got good vibrations from this family, also it seemed a great opportunity to stay in a Victorian house built in 1899.

First of all, how to book a room in their house was a bit different to the other accommodations of my journey. In this case I had to write a personal mail to them and make a booking request. I wrote them telling them my plans and further, asking them for an extra help. I needed to buy one tickets for an american football event and thought, although ultimately was not needed, that I needed a U.S. address. Finally it was not for a football entrance, if not, for a train ticket for what I needed their address. Kindly Veda was responsible for receiving and storing it until my arrival.

After several emails in both directions, I arrived to KC. Veda told me in one of her emails to give them a call as soon I get the station, and so, Bruce would come to pick me up. So I did it, it was seven thirty in the morning and Bruce just took five minutes to appear.

When we got home, Veda gave me a warm welcome, and did not take a minute to tell me how much she liked this blog. They asked me if I had some breakfast, and after my negative response, Bruce began to prepare inmediatly a breakfast that tasted like glory.

   During my breakfast, we had a good time talking about various things, but as soon the American politics subject came, we forgot the rest. Without going into details, I just want to say that this family thinks like my family thinks, so this detail, also made me feel even better and more like at home.

       When I finished my breakfast, my room was already prepared for me without having to wait any "check in" time as it is usual in other accomodations. And not only that, they had prepared only for me the top floor, which is consisted of a complete floor with a huge bedroom, a nice toilet and an impressive billiard room. Logically, this room cost more than the other two that were smaller, but Bruce and Veda had prepared for me without any extra cost.

                The first thing that I did when I saw myself with all those things for me, was preparing a good bath with lots of foam to recover from the exhausting journey of thirteen hours by bus, with transfer included at four in the morning at the freezing and lost station of Des Moines. After that I lie in bed with the intention of working a bit with the computer, but it was impossible and I sleept for two or three hours.

When I awoke, I went downstairs to the kitchen where Veda was, and I told her that I was going to go out for a walk around the neighborhood. She gave me a lot of directions and good advices on where I could go, and she also recommended me, not before of offering herself to prepare something for me, a nearby restaurant.

After the walk, an African music session in a Sudanese Presbyterian church that I met and a tasty and comforting noodles vietnamise soup in the restaurant that Veda recommended me, I returned to my super room to rest and prepare the next day in which a football game was awaiting for me.

I had a good night, the bed was very comfortable and my dream was continuous, something that I'm not enjoying too much on this trip. I told to Veda that I would be having my breakfast at eight o'clock in the morning. When I got downstairs at that time I found an incredible selection of great food ..., fruits, toasts, juice, cereals ... this family care a lot to the smallest details, and that is very welcome.

       When I finished my breakfast, Bruce and Veda gave me another good new, they told me that Chris would bring me to the stadium. This was a great favour, due to get to the stadium from their house was a long way and also it was not entirely clear for me. Also, the day before I asked Chris if he knew whether there was any problem in getting my camera to the stadium, as I read in the team's website that professional cameras were not allowed, and my camera, without being pro, it can be considered semipro. Chris called to the stadium and asked about this particular topic .... I have really no words to thank this family how has treated me.

        Once back home, after another great experience in this country that soon I will tell you. I was told to stay at their home all the time that I need, as my train to Trinidad not departs until eleven at night. Finally, at about seven o'clock in the afternoon, Bruce took me to the estation.

           Bruce and Veda are a lovely couple, they have treated me with great affection and unsurpassed hospitality. Right now I'm imagining Veda in the kitchen, reading aloud this article to Bruce, as she did with another post the day we met. From here I want to thank to them and I recommend to all of you that if you go to Kansas City, do not miss a visit to them. Indeed, his beautiful house is for sale because they want to move to Denver where their daughter is living, so if anyone is interested, you know what to do.

        Thanks Bruce and Veda, my stay with you has been very sweet, I really miss you.

Mi Road Trip por Arizona

   El tiempo se me echa encima y aun me quedan cosas en el tintero...., pero, que le voy a hacer si cuando llego a mi hotel, en lo que tardo en pasar las fotos de la camara al ordenador, el sueno me gana la partida...

   De todos modos, aun quedando un par de cosas de las que hablar, quiero ensenaros lo que hice durante los dos ultimos dias por un motivo muy sencillo. Yo suelo hablar bastante conmigo mismo, y ademas, muchas veces lo hago en voz alta, dejando a los que estan cerca y me oyen con cara de "que dice este tio?". Pues bien, estos dos dias, han sido los dias que mas veces he dicho en voz alta.... "que bonito...!!!"

   Estoy en Flagstaff, en el estado de Arizona, y como bien me contaba el taxista que me llevo al aeropuerto a recoger el coche que habia alquilado para dos dias, "Arizona es el Estado con mas escenarios de pelicula de los Estados Unidos".... Yo no conozco mas que lo que os estoy ensenando, y escenarios de pelicula hay alla por donde paso, pero si una cosa es cierta, es que por espectacularidad, Arizona se lleva el primer premio.

   El primero de los dos dias cayo una nevada importante, tanto que durante bastante tiempo antes de coger el coche, estuve pensando si cancelar o no la excursion de ese dia. Afortunadamente no lo hice, cogiendo todos los seguros posibles, para que en el muy posible caso de tener un accidente, no me arruinara con ello.

Sedona fue el destino de mi primer dia. Aun no siendo mi plan inicial, el camino hasta alli, y el pueblo en si mismo me dejaron maravillado. Debido a la fuerte nevada, el taxista me recomendo que no fuera a Monument Valley como tenia planeado. Me recomendo ir a Sedona tanto por su paisaje como porque al estar situado a bastante menos altitud que Flagstaff, seguramente la nieve no hubiera llegado hasta alli.

Asi que despues de recoger el coche, y de un autoaprendizaje rapido de conduccion de coches automaticos, cogi la US 17 rumbo a Sedona, siendo curiosamente cierto lo que me habia dicho el taxista, ya que segun me fui acercando a Sedona, el tiempo fue mejorando de una forma un tanto extrana hasta quedarse un dia relativamente bueno.

   Conducir hasta Sedona, en plena tempestad, y llegar hasta alli con un cielo soleado que me permitiera disfruar al maximo del paisaje, fue un regalo en un dia que ya daba por perdido.

   El paisaje de Sedona, la vegetacion de la zona, el color rojo de las grandes rocas y el conjunto arquitectonico de la zona, hacen de este un sitio muy peculiar.

   Sedona, ademas de ser conocida por su festival de cine, es famosa por sus OVNIs, ángeles, extraterrestres y vórtices curativos. Los avistajes de OVNIs son organizados regularmente con resultados increibles, vamos, que es algo asi como la Meca del que le guste el tema paranormal. Precisamente aqui he descubierto con mucho, la iglesia mas peculiar, diferente y realmente bonita, de todas las que haya visto jamas. Es la "Chapel of the Holy Cross", y tanto su ubicacion como su interior me dejaron literalmente con la boca abierta.

Al dia siguiente tenia planeada una ruta de 700 kilometros, siendo la primera de las paradas el famoso Grand Canyon. Para ello me puse el despertador con la intencion de ver desde alli el amanecer.

Sali del motel a las cinco y media de la manana y llegue a Grand Canyon Village a eso de las siete, veinte minutos antes de que el Sol saliera. Afortunadamente ese dia no habia tormenta, lo que me vino muy bien en mi camino en plena noche por una carretera helada y desierta,... pero desafortunadamente, la niebla que me encontre a primera hora, cubria casi todo en Canon. Aun asi, y con cinco grados bajo cero, segun me acerque para contemplarlo, no pude reprimir un "Guau, Impresionante!!

Fue a esta primera hora cuando me encontre con un par de ciervos a escasos metro de mi. Por lo visto es bastante facil encontrarse animales salvajes por aqui, eso si, una norma fundamental es ni tocarlos ni alimentarlos, mas adelante una senora le dio comida a unos cuervos enormes para hacerles una foto y un guardabosques que la vio le echo una buena bronca por ello.

Segun avanzo la manana, como si de otro regalo se tratara, el cielo se fue despejando, y aun con mis pocas esperanzas iniciales, finalmente pude disfrutar al completo de las increibles vistas del canon.

Despues de recorrerme todo Grand Canyon Village y de parar en cada uno de los miradores que hay en el camino hasta la entrada Este del recinto, cogi la US64 con direccion Monument Valley.

El camino hasta Monument Valley ha sido el viaje en coche sonado durante tanto tiempo. Praderas desiertas, grandes rocas, rectas inacabables... Aquellas imagenes que hemos visto en tantas peliculas,.... en directo!!.... solo puedo decir una cosa, ha sido el viaje en coche mas guapo de toda mi vida.

El valle se encuentra justo cuando entras en el estado de Utah. La entrada cuesta cinco dolares, y está dentro de la reserva de los nativos navajo. Puedes recorrer con tu coche un circuito de ventisiete kilometros y tierra roja, donde puedes contemplar increibles formaciones de roca llamadas "mesas".

Yo logicamente no me recorri los ventisiete kilometros ya que empezaba a ser tarde y el dia habia empezado muy pronto. Justo antes del atardecer, empredi mi regreso a casa.

Conducir en los Estados Unidos era una parte obligada de este viaje. Y lo que en un principio, dada las malas condiciones metereologicas, parecia un fracaso inminente, se ha convertido en una experiencia deliciosa. Sin duda alguna haber elegido Arizona como estado para hacerlo, ha sido un gran acierto.

   The time comes down on me and I still have things in the pipeline ...., but what can I do if when I get to my hotel, during the time that takes to download the pictures from the camera to the computer, I can not stay awake...

   Anyway, even being a couple of things to talk about, I want to show you what I did the last two days by a very simple reason. I usually talk with myself, and besides, I do it sometimes aloud, leaving those who are close to me and hear me with a face that says "what is this guy saying?". Well, these two days had been the days that more times I have said aloud.... "so nice...!!!"

   I am in Flagstaff, Arizona, and as the taxi driver who took me to the airport to pick up the car that I had rented for two days said, "Arizona is the state with more movie scenenaries of the U.S." .. .. I do not know more than what I am showing to you, and movie scenaries are wherever I go, but one thing is certain, at the moment, Arizona is the most spectacular one.

   The first of the two days, a big snowstorm made me think if it was a good idea to cancel the first car trip of my planning. Fortunately I did not. I took as many insurances as possible, so in the case of a very probably accident, I wouldnt ruin with it.

     Sedona was the destination of my first day. Although it was not in my original plan, the road up there, and the town itself left me wondering. Due to the heavy snow, the taxi driver recommended me not to go to Monument Valley as I have planned. He recommend me going to Sedona for two reasons, its landscape and because it is located quite below Flagstaff altitude, and the snow probably would not have got there.

   So after picking up the car, and a fast self-learning automatic car driving lesson, I took the US17 heading to Sedona, being curiously true what the taxi driver had told me, and as soon I got closer to Sedona, the weather was improving in a somewhat strange way, and a relatively good day appear.

   Drive to Sedona, under the snowstorm and reach there with a sunny sky that allowed me to enjoy to the maximum the landscape, was a gift on a day that was already lost.

   Sedona's landscape, the vegetation of the area, the red color of the large rocks, and the architectural ensemble of the area, make this a very peculiar place.

   Sedona, being known for its film festival, is also famous for its UFO, angels, aliens and healing vortexes. UFO sightings are regularly organized with incredible results. So we can say that Sedona is the Mecca for those who love the paranormal activity. Just here I've found by far, the most peculiar, different and really nice church of all I have ever seen. It is the "Chapel of the Holy Cross," and both its location and its interior left me literally with my mouth open.

The next day I had planned a route of more than 400 miles, being the first of the stops, the famous Grand Canyon. To do this I set the alarm with the intention of seeing the sunrise from there.

I left the motel at five thirty in the morning and I arrived at Grand Canyon Village at seven o'clock, twenty minutes before the sunrise. Fortunately there was no storm that day, which helps me in my way at night on an icy and deserted road... but unfortunately, I found a dense fog that covered nearly the whole canyon. Even so, with twenty-three degrees, as soon I approached to have a look at it, I could not repress a "Wooow, Amaaaazing!!

At that first hour was when I found a couple of deers a few meters far from me. Apparently it is quite easy to find wild animals here, but there two fundamental rules: not touch or feed them. I saw a lady giving food to huge crows to take a photo and a ranger who saw the action strongly scolded her.

The morning was progressing, and as if it were another gift, the sky was clearing, and even with my few initial expectations, finally I could enjoy the full amazing views of the canyon.

After driving around Grand Canyon Village and stopping at each of the viewpoints that are on the way to the eastern entrance of the enclosure, I took the US64 to Monument Valley.

The road to Monument Valley has been the dream road trip for so long. Desert grassland, large rocks, endless roads ... Those pictures that we have seen in many movies ,.... live!!.... I can only say one thing, and it is that this car trip has been the most beautiful car trip of my life.

   As soon you reach the state of Utah you find the valley. Admission is five dollars, and it is within the reservation of the Navajo native. You can drive with your car through a seventeen miles loop road with red sand where you can contemplate incredible rock formations called "mesas."

   I did not drive logically the seventen miles, it was getting late and the day had started very soon. Just before sunset, I started my way home.

   Driving in the United States was a must of this trip. And what at first sight, with the bad weather conditions, seemed an inminent failure, finally has become a delightful experience. Undoubtedly have chosen Arizona as the state to do so, has been a great success.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

   Doce horas exactas me quedan en este momento para coger el avion que me llevara a casa, alguna hora menos cuando termine de escribir este post.

   Estoy en San Francisco, ultima parada en mi aventura. Es una encantadora ciudad, very very gay friendly y con otro toque particular y unico que caracteriza a las grandes urbes estadounidenses. De todos modos, sera desde Espana cuando acabe este blog y escriba sobre mi estancia en esta ciudad, ya que mis ultimas horas en este pais las quiero aprovechar al maximo y no enfrente de la pantalla de un ordenador.

   Ahora toca hablaros de Las Vegas, parada obligatoria en un viaje como el que estoy a punto de terminar.

Con algun kilo de menos, con una barba que jamas habia tenido y con las energias en horas bajas llegue al hotel Flamingo, mitico hotel que se encuentra en pleno Strip, la calle principal y mas conocida de las Vegas y a lo largo de la cual se situan los grandes y famosos hoteles de esta ciudad localizada en medio del desierto de Nevada.

He de reconocer que en Las Vegas me di un capricho, y viendo que los precios de las habitaciones no eran exageradamente caros, elegi la habiatacion mas guapa y con mejores vistas del hotel Flamingo, la "Go Luxury Room".

Esta habitacion, que se diferencia de la "Go Room" por tener vistas al strip, consta de una cama gigante y muy comoda, una television de plasma enorme, equipo de musica para conectar el ipod, cortinas automaticas, television de plasma incrustado en el espejo del aseo, luces de ambiente rosas al mas puro estilo "Flamingo"...., vamos, una gozada y un acierto haber pasado mis tres noches en Las Vegas en esta pedazo de habitacion.

   El hotel, como todos los de aqui, posee casino propio, es decir, es un Hotel-Casino. A mi particularmente fue de los que mas me gusto entre todos los que vi, siempre teniendo en cuenta que no se diferencian mucho unos de otros, pero no se, quiza la ambientacion "Rosa Flaminga" y que obviamente, era mi hotel y le habia cogido carino pronto, pues inclinaban la balanza.

   En lo que se refiere a la sala y a los jugadores, de primeras me quede...., "impactado"???, "sorprendido"??,..., mmmmh, no se que termino utilizar la verdad porque lo que alli habia ya me lo esperaba e imaginaba.

   Yo nunca habia estado en un casino, es algo que no me llama la atencion en absoluto, aprecio demasiado mi dinero y me cuesta mucho ganarlo para ver como lo mas posible es que desaparezca de un plumazo sin obtener mas a cambio que la mera satisfaccion de poder multiplicarlo......., pero bueno, entiendo que haya quien le encuentre el gusto, y que adicciones hay mil..., yo personalemente las prefiero de otro tipo.

   Lo que alli habia era mucho turista, bastante gente joven, pero sobre todo personas mayores de mas de sesenta anos enganchados a un pitillo y metiendole dolares a las maquinas,......, bueno, esta bien,....., si disfrutan con ello y se lo pueden permitir, pues bien por ellos,......, pero si no es asi, es una verdadera pena....., es como si a los adictos a la cocaina u a otras drogas les pusieras un sitio donde hubiera barra libre publicitada con luces de neon........, al menos esta es mi opinion.

   Decir tiene que si que jugue, el dia de mi "check-out", cargado con las maletas en mitad del casino me dije: "te vas a ir sin jugar nada?" y aun dandome relmente igual, le meti un dolar a una tragaperras que solo giro la ruleta una vez,..... toda una decepcion y un dolar menos en la cartera!!

   Hay otras dos cosas que llaman la atencion de Las Vegas. La primera y mas llamativa son los propios hoteles. Son como parques tematicos ambientados cada uno en lo suyo. Estan por ejemplo el hotel "New York" o el hotel "Paris", que podeis ver en las fotos. Aparte de estos hay otros muchos como el "Circus", "Luxor", "Caesar Palace"... La verdad es que mola, y es lo que creo, aparte de la posiblilidad de darle rienda suelta a tu ludopatia, lo que hace de esta ciudad algo tan peculiar.

   El otro tema que llama la atencion, y yo no soy nada puritano, que quede claro, es la oferta de sexo que hay alla donde mires. En cualquier acera te encuentras con pequenos latinos (y digo pequenos porque curiosamente la mayoria no sobrepasa el metro sesenta) dando estampitas con fotos de mujeres ofreciendo sexo, furgonetas con grandes carteles recorriendo el Strip o los tipicos dispensarios de peridicos, que en este caso no tienen peridodicos si no guias donde encontrar chicas.

Volviendo al tema de los hoteles, mi favorito fue el Venetian. Es espectacular, tanto su interior como su exterior donde hay un pequeno canal donde montar en una gondola.

   Un sitio donde hay que ir en Las Vegas y que esta mas alla del Strip es la calle Fremont, donde se encuentra el famoso neon del cowboy.

   Es una calle llena de neones, casinos y restaurantes que en el dia que yo fui habia un concierto de musica country como parte de los eventos que se estaban celebrando esos dias por organizarse ese año las Finales Nacionales de Rodeo en Las Vegas, y a las cuales, por supuesto, yo tenia planeado ir al dia siguiente.

   Al dia siguiente comenzaban las "National Final Rodeo". No se si seria habitual, supongo que seria debido al evento, pero Las Vegas estaba llena de cowboys, gente con sombrero vaquero que supongo estaban alli aparte de para disfrutar de la ciudad, para asistir a las finales de algo que por lo que pude comprobar llevan muy arraigado.

Resumiendo que se me echa el tiempo encima, Las Vegas es una ciudad para pasarselo bien. Un destino vacacional para muchos estadounidenses y no estadounidenses. Un lugar donde estoy seguro se cometen muchas locuras y donde como dice el dicho "What happen in Vegas, stay in Vegas".

   At this time, twelve accurate hours left to take the plane which is taking me home, any hour less when I finish writing this post.

   I'm in San Francisco, last stop in my journey. It is a charming city, very very gay friendly and other city with a special and unique touch that characterizes the large U.S. cities. Anyway, I will be in Spain when I finish this blog and write about my stay in this city since I dont want to waste my last hours in this country in front of a computer screen.

   Now it is time to write about Las Vegas, obligatory stop on a trip like the one that I am finishing right now.

With somewhat less weight, with a beard that I never had before and with the energies in low hours, I reached the Flamingo Hotel, legendary hotel located in the Strip, the main and most famous street of Las Vegas and along which place the largest and most famous hotels in this city placed in the middle of the Nevada's Desert.

I must admit that I enjoyed a whim in Las Vegas, seeing that the prices of the rooms were not overly expensive, I chose the most beautiful combined room and with better views of the Flamingo hotel, the "Go Luxury Room."

This room, which differs from the "Go Room" to have Strip views, comprises a very comfortable king size bed and a huge plasma television, stereo to connect the ipod, automatic curtains, plasma TV embedded in the bathroom mirror, ambient pink lighting in the purest style "Flamingo "..., a joy and a success having spent my three nights in Las Vegas in such a room like this.

The hotel, like all here, has its own casino, that is, it is a Hotel-Casino. I particularly was that I liked the most among all I saw, always bearing in mind that all do not differ much from each other, but I do not know, maybe the ambience "Pink Flamingo" and obviously, it was my hotel and I had caught simpathy early, it tilts the balance.

   In regard to the casino and the players, my first impression was..., "shocked"???, "surprised"??,..., mmmm, I do not know what term to use to say the truth, because what I saw there really did not surprised me at all and was something that I was expecting for.

   I had never been in a casino, it is something that does not catches my attention at all, I care a lot of my money and it is too hard to get it to see how easy and possible is to see it disappearing at a stroke without getting more in return than just satisfaction to multiply it......., but hey, I understand that anyone will find the taste on it, and I know that addictions are thousands ... I personally prefer otherwise.

   What was there was much tourists, quite young people, but mostly people aged over sixty years with a cigarette and putting dollars into the machines ,......, well alright ,..... , if they enjoy it and can afford it, good for them ,......, but if not, it is a real shame ....., it's as if you take a cocaine addicted or other drugs to a site where there is free drug advertised with neon lights ........, at least this is my opinion.

   I must admit that I played, the day of my "check-out", with all my luggage in the middle of the casino I told myself: "Are you going to leave without playing anything?" and even not giving a shit of it, I put a dollar in a slot machine and then, the wheel spin only once ,..... a disappointment and a dollar less in my wallet!

   There are two other things that attract the attention of Las Vegas. The first and most striking are the hotels themselves. They are like theme parks acclimated each in its own. Are for example the hotel "New York" or hotel "Paris", that you can see in the pictures. Apart from these there are many others as the "Circus", "Luxor", "Caesars Palace" ... The truth is that it is cool, and that is what I think, apart from the possibility for giving free rein to your gambling, which makes this city so unique.

   The other issue that attracts attention, and I want to say that I am not a puritan, is the offer of sex that it is everywhere you look. Everywhere you go you see little latins (and I say little because curiously most of them are not taller than one meter and sixty centimeter) giving stamps with pictures of women offering sex, vans with large signs that run along the Strip or the typical newspapers dispensers, where in this case you do not fond newspapers if not guides where to find girls.

Turning to the hotels, my favorite was the Venetian. It is spectacular, both the interior and exterior where there is a small canal where you can ride a gondola.

A place where you have to go in Las Vegas and that is beyond the Strip is Fremont Street, where the famous neon cowboy is located.

It is a street full of neon lights, casinos and restaurants, and where, on the day that I went, there was a country music concert as part of the events that were taking place those days to organize this year's National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, to which of course I had planned to go the next day.

The next day began the "National Final Rodeo." I do not know if it would normally, I guess it would be due to the event, but Las Vegas was full of cowboys, people with cowboy hatthat I guess were there other than to enjoy the city to attend the end of something that I could check are deeply entrenched.

Finishing, Las Vegas is a city to have fun. A holiday destination for many Americans, and not Americans. A place where I am sure many follies were committed and where as the sentence says "What Happen in Vegas, stay in Vegas."

   Lo primero de todo debo pedir disculpas por una ausencia de dos semanas después de mi ultimo post desde San Francisco. Realmente el tiempo pasa volando y se que mas de uno me estaba siguiendo la pista,..., así que, mis disculpas por ello.

   Espero, el retraso, esté en parte justificado, y es que dos, como las semanas, han sido los motivos. El primero y mas importante de lo que pensaba, las necesarias "vacaciones" después de las "vacaciones". Han sido veinticinco días muy activos de intensos momentos agarrado a mi querida cámara. Desconectar durante unos días ha sido muy necesario.

   Y segundo y también muy importante, es que no quería cerrar este blog sin dejar una muestra de lo que fui a hacer allí, porque no solo me marché a vivir una experiencia inolvidable y a realizar un viaje soñado por muchos, sino que también he estado "trabajando", y he traído conmigo 500Gb de video en alta definición para darle rienda suelta a mi segunda pasión después de viajar, "hacer películas".

   Y por eso os quiero presentar en el siguiente video a los "Gold Magnolias", una muy talentosa banda de Brooklyn que conoci en la estacion de metro de Times Square, en Nueva York.

   First of all, I must apologize for an absence of two weeks after my last post from San Francisco. Time really flies and I know that more than one friend was following me,..., so, my apologies for that.

   I hope this delay is partly justified, because two, as the weeks, are the reasons for it.

   The first and more important than I thought, the necessary resting after the long way. Twenty-five very active days, living grabbed my beloved camera. Disconnect for a few days has been very necessary.

   And second and equally important, is that I do not want to close this blog without leaving a sample of what I have been doing during my trip. Because the reason to do this journey was not only to live an unforgettable experience and make a dream trip for many, it was also a "working trip", and I brought with me 500GB of HD video to work now in my second passion after traveling, "making movies. "

   And so I want to present in the next video, "The Gold Magnolias", a very talented band based in Brooklyn that I met at the Times Square Subway Station in New York.

Habian quedado ademas, varias cosas en el aire. Entre ellas el partido de futbol americano entre los Kansas City Chiefs y los Arizona Cardinals al que me llevo Chris, el hijo de Bruce y Veda en Kansas City.

Fue una interesante experiencia. Los americanos saben bien como montar un buen espectaculo, y aquel fue uno. Ganaron los Chiefs por paliza y nos fuimos contentos a casa.

   Tambien tenia que hablaros de mi paso por Albuquerque, donde, al pasar Accion de Gracias, estuvo todo cerrado durante varios dias, pero donde por casualidad, encontre cerca de mi motel, el Rio Grande donde pude disfrutar durante una mañana de la vida salvaje de la zona.

   Por último quedó pendiente mi post sobre San Francisco, ciudad donde pasé mis dos últimos días y que no defraudo en absoluto a las expectativas de encontrar una ciudad con mucho encanto y con un toque único.

   Aquí, aparte de hacer unas imprescindibles compras de ropa a precios de risa comparados con los de España, visite el "Pier 39", donde habita un grupo de leones marinos desde hace unos años.

Desde esta zona de San Francisco, muy visitada por los turistas y llamada el "Embarcadero", puedes observar la famosa carcel de Alcatraz y el Golden Gate, tambien conocido como el Puente de San Francisco.

Otra visita interesante para hacer en San Francisco es ver la calle Lombard, famosa por sus cuestas en zig-zag y por lo que me imagino, poco transitada por los vecinos y mucho por los turistas, ya que en todos los coches que bajaban, el copiloto grababa la escena de alguna manera.

   Y hay que ir acabando y cerrar aqui esta "Primera Parte", porque como he dicho, ahora tengo mucho material entre manos y tan solo tengo que darle la forma adecuada.

   Ha sido un viaje espectacular, a la altura del mejor viaje. No podria decir que es lo que mas me ha gustado, porque me ha gustado todo, aunque si que quiza lo que mas me haya sorprendido y agradado es la amabilididad y hospitabilidad de las personas que me he encontrado,......, un verdadero placer que ha hecho que todo fuera sobre ruedas.

   Y sobre todo, quiero agradeceros a todos los que me habeis seguido mientras estaba alli, vuestra compañia, porque de verdad que lo he sentido y me ha venido muy bien.......... Y a los que habeis venido despues y os habeis encontrado este blog por casualidad, bienvenidos, espero que disfruteis al menos un poco de lo que lo hice yo.

Several things had remained outstanding. One of them is the NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals who took me Chris, the son of Bruce and Veda in Kansas City.

It was an interesting experience. The Americans know well how to make a good show, and that was one. Chiefs won and back home happy.

I also have to write about my days in Albuquerque, where, due to the Thanksgiving celebration, everything was closed for several days, but where, by accident, I found the Rio Grande near my motel and I had for a day a bit of wildlife.

   And finally my post about San Francisco, a city where I spent my last two days and that does not disappoint at all the expectations to find a charming city with a unique touch.

   Here, apart from making some necessary purchases of clothing to laugh prices compared with those of Spain, I visited the "Pier 39", where live one group of sea lions since few years ago.

   From this area, visited by many tourists and called the "Embarcadero", you can see the famous prison of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate, also known as the San Francisco Bridge.

Another interesting place to go in San Francisco is the Lombard Street, famous for its steep zig-zag and what I imagine, not so used by residents and and a lot by visitors. Inside all the cars coming down, the passengers were recording the scene with any device.

   And I have to finish and close here is "Part One" because as I said, now I have much material at hand and I just have to continue working with it.

   It has been a spectacular journey. I could not say what I liked the most, because I liked everything, maybe the best part of these days has been the kindness and hospitality of the people I've found,......, a pleasure that has made all out on wheels.

   And above all, I want to thank all who have followed me while I was there..........

   To all the new people who have find this blog by accident, welcome, hope you enjoy at least some of what I did.
