Ibrahim 'abandoned the true tenants of his religion' by participating in the plot, U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said in a statement.

An Imam has been sentenced to life in prison for joining a failed plot to firebomb John F. Kennedy Airport in 2007 by blowing up jet fuel supplies with the help of a notorious al-Qaida explosives expert.

A federal judge in Brooklyn gave Kareem Ibrahim, the leader of the Shiite Muslim community in Trinidad and Tobago, the life term on Friday after a jury found him guilty last year of conspiracy.

Three other men were charged in the plot: Co-defendants Russell Defreitas, a Guyanese Shi'ite, former JFK cargo handler who spoke of punishing the United States with an attack that would "dwarf 9/11"- and Abdel Kadir, an engineer and former member of Guyana's parliament, both were sentenced to life in prison. Abdel Nur was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.

At a pair of trials, prosecutors accused the men of wanting to kill thousands of people and cripple the American economy and avenge U.S. mistreatment of Muslims worldwide by using explosives to blow up the fuel tanks and the underground pipelines that run through an adjacent Queens neighbourhood.

Consumer Electronics Association chief Gary Shapiro stands-up for the Consumer Electronics Show, contending that high-tech evolution still requires that personal experience.

Writing in Forbes, Shapiro says, "Bill Gates once told me that Microsoft was made by trade shows like CES. Indeed, every large company started as a small company that needed to attract investors, partners and customers quickly and efficiently. The best place to accomplish all three? At a tradeshow. Indeed, the entire CES is run with a basic principle: that anyone with an idea should be able to present it inexpensively. Companies and careers have been made at trade shows – and our world has been changed by them as well."

A good example of the human element at the C.E.S. are the professional gatherings, such as the annual Monster Retail Awards and Concert. The Monster event recognizes individuals and companies as best Monster retailers in specific categories, including highest achievers in growth, highest percentages of total Monster product sales, and dollars-per-store sales.

Google Lunar X Prize of $30 mil draws 29 competing teams- including one from little Israel

Israel Aircraft Industries officially launched the Space IL Project, which is competing for the Google LunarX Prize aimed at generating interest among space explorers in safely landing an unmanned vehicle on the surface of the moon.

Team-member, Haviv Rettig Gur, representative of the Jewish Agency, tells DemoCast that Space IL, conceived a year ago, is the brainchild of three young engineers - Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub, and operates as a not-for-profit enterprise.

Aside from creating a vehicle to reach the moon, the team’s main purpose is to encourage and advance scientific education. IAI Chairman Dov Baharav characterized Space IL as an outstanding example of new initiatives with extraordinary challenges. The IAI as a leader in Israel’s space industry is proud to be part of the project he said, and is eager to strengthen education in space technology.

Prizes totaling $30 million will be distributed to those teams whose vehicles travel at least 500 meters along the surface of the moon and transmit images and data back to earth. Artists craft, ignite, then, demolish giant ice-menorah in L.A. Chabad Lubavitch gives Los Angeles, a city more accustomed to sand-sculpting than ice-sculpting, its first hand-crafted ice-menorah. The menorah draws attention to the history of the Maccabean Jews of Judea who fought the Syrian Hellenists to rededicate the Second Temple in Jerusalem, 165 BCE.

Rabbi Tzemach Cunin leads the ceremony which featured traditional oil-cooked foods, potato pancakes and jelly-donuts. The Chainsaw Chicks crew wowed the attendees with their custom designed, outdoor crafted, ice-menorah- which for safety reasons, they publicly demolished as the conclusion of the festivities. Israel's capital to host its first ever ice festival in March-April 2012, including frozen sculptures of important sites.

Jerusalem will host the first ice festival in its history in March-April 2012. It will be held at the city's old train station plaza and will include an exhibition of Jerusalem's most famous sites, all carved in ice, and many attractions for visitors.

The sculpture exhibition will display Jerusalem's most unique sites, including the Tower of David, the Israel Museum and the Light Rail. Visitors will enter the complex through an icy "Jaffa Gate" and pass through a route including ice slides and other attractions linked to the different displays.

Arab hate: A Muslim Brotherhood rally in Cairo's most prominent mosque Friday turned into a venomous anti-Israel protest, with attendants vowing to "one day kill all Jews."

“All Jews- not just Zionists, as the so-called “moderate Muslims” in the west keep telling us. The world stands by in eery silence, just like 1938."

Some 5,000 people joined the rally, called to promote the "battle against Jerusalem's Judaization." The event coincided with the anniversary of the United Nations' partition plan in 1947, which called for the establishment of a Jewish state.

Speakers at the event delivered impassioned, hateful speeches against Israel, slamming the "Zionist occupiers" and the "treacherous Jews." Upon leaving the rally, worshippers were given small flags, with Egypt's flag on one side and the Palestinian flag on the other, as well as maps of Jerusalem's Old City detailing where "Zionists are aiming to change Jerusalem's Muslim character."

Muslim Brotherhood spokesmen, as well as Palestinian guest speakers, made explicit calls for Jihad and for liberating the whole of Palestine. Time and again, a Koran quote vowing that "one day we shall kill all the Jews" was uttered at the site. Meanwhile, businessmen in the crowd were urged to invest funds in Jerusalem in order to prevent the acquisition of land and homes by Jews.

Speaking to Ynet outside the mosque following the prayer, elementary school teacher Ala al-Din said that "all Egyptian Muslims are willing to embark on Jihad for the sake of Palestine."

"Why is the US losing in Afghanistan? Because the other side is willing and wants to die. We have a different mentality than that of the Americans and Jews," he said.

SPM’s consideration of taxes will help Obama’s reelection campaign if (and I believe it’s more like when) the Census Bureau surprises everyone and releases its related report in October of next year instead of November, as it did this year, and attempts with media help to give it greater credibility than the official measurement.

But in 2012, if the agreement with Abbas is implemented, Hamas will take control over the PLO.

Most people assume that Chanukah is the Jewish holiday equivalent to Christmas, just as Passover is the predecessor of Easter. South Park had some fun with this here.

But Hanukah Harry (Rabbi Moshe Parry of L.A.) teaches us that the story of Chanukah (which translates as re-dedication) is more about conservative dedication to Torah (bible) principles in the face of pressure to assimilation to multiculturalism among the Syrian Greeks for personal aggrandisement.

(Glossary: Torah= Biblical law; Eretz Yisoel = The land of Israel; Beis ha Migdash = The Holy Temple; Avraham Avinu = Abraham, our father; Shabbos= The sabbath; Bris milah = ritual circumcision; Kashrut= kosher dietary laws; Kohen Gadol= Great Priest; Avodah= devotional prayer; HaShem= the name of G-d).

So you see, remembering Judah and the Maccabees fighting to preserve God-given rights, liberty, and culture is a long-honored tradition we can take inspiration from to protect Israel and Anglo-Saxon culture in our own time.

Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011) defended the Iraq War, opposed Islamism and anti-Semitism

Christopher Hitchens, author and public intellectual, died Friday, 15 December of pneumonia resulting from esophageal cancer in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Hitchens lived one day beyond the ceremony to end the Iraq war. He supported the liberating the Iraqi and Kurdish peoples from Saddam Hussein.

Christopher Hitchens argued the case for the Iraq War in a 2003 collection of essays entitled A Long Short War: The Postponed Liberation of Iraq, and he has held numerous public debates on the topic with George Galloway and Scott Ritter. Though he admits to the numerous failures of the war, and its high civilian casualties, he sticks to the position that deposing Saddam Hussein was a long-overdue responsibility of the United States, after decades of poor policy, and that holding free elections in Iraq has been a success not to be scoffed at. He argues that a continued fight in Iraq against insurgents, whether they be former Saddam loyalists or Islamic extremists, is a fight worth having, and that those insurgents, not American forces, should be the ones taking the brunt of the blame for a slow reconstruction and high civilian casualties.

British politician George Galloway, founder of the socialist Respect Party, on his way to testify in front of a United States Senate sub-committee investigating the scandals in the U.N. Oil-for-Food programme, called Hitchens a "drink-sodden ex-Trotskyist popinjay", to which Hitchens quickly replied, "only some of which is true." Later, in a column for Slate promoting his debate with Galloway which was to take place on 14 September 2005, he elaborated on his prior response: "He says that I am an ex-Trotskyist (true), a 'popinjay' (true enough, since the word's original Webster's definition is a target for arrows and shots), and that I cannot hold a drink (here I must protest)."

Journalist Eli Lake eulogizes Mr. Hitchens in the Daily Beast:

Mr. Hitchens never stopped saying and writing that the (Iraq) war was just and that American arms were needed to end the regime of Saddam Hussein. But Christopher did not arrive at this position simply because his old colleagues at the Nation Magazine did not. He came to support the Iraq war after befriending many Iraqis, and particularly Kurds, who told him about the horrors of that dictatorship. For Christopher, supporting the war was an expression of his anti-totalitarianism. He would later say that the war pitted the anti-totalitarian left against the anti-imperialist left.

Hitchens asserted his points in this webcast public debate with leftist former MP George Galloway, following Galloway's appearance before a Congressional sub-committee. This debate was moderated by Amy Jacobson of Democracy Now at CUNY's Baruch College in Manhattan in 2006.

In November 2010, Hitchens canceled a scheduled appearance in New York, where he was to debate religion writers David Hazony and Stephen Prothero on the subject of the Ten Commandments. Earlier that year, he published a piece in Vanity Fair on the subject, and was working on a book about the Ten Commandments as well.

In March 2010, Mr. Hitchens spoke out against Islamism and anti-Semitism in giving the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture, exclusive to DemoCast. In it, he calls anti-Semitism "a gateway to tyranny & the common enemy of civilization."

During his illness, Hitchens was under the care of Francis Collins and was the subject of Collins' new cancer treatment which maps out the human genome and selectively targets damaged DNA.

In April 2011, Hitchens was forced to cancel a scheduled appearance at the American Atheist Convention, and instead sent a letter that stated, "Nothing would have kept me from joining you except the loss of my voice (at least my speaking voice) which in turn is due to a long argument I am currently having with the specter of death." He closed with "And don't keep the faith." The letter also dismissed the notion of a possible deathbed conversion, in which he claimed that "redemption and supernatural deliverance appears even more hollow and artificial to me than it did before.

The Palestinian Conflict is the Excuse of Arab Jew-Haters, Not the Cause of Their Hatred

President Obama's appointed Ambassador to Belgium, Howard Gutman, made remarks in Belgium in which he attempted to distinguish Muslim anti-Semitism from classic anti-Semitism. He put forth a view shared by Obama that contemporary Muslim anti-Semitism is distinct and caused by perceptions of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Jonathan S. Tobin challenges this view, excerpted here from Commentary" Conflict is the Excuse of Arab Jew-Haters, Not the Cause of Their Hatred."

"It is true that those who express hatred for Jews and give vent to these feelings are more likely to do so when Israel is in the news. Then they claim it is the conflict or specific actions undertaken by the Jewish state that is the cause of what they say and do. But, as with the “classic anti-Semitism” that Amb. Howard Gutman saw as different from contemporary Arab hate, Israeli actions merely provide an excuse for this prejudice. Israeli actions are not its cause.

The anti-Semitism growing in Britain and throughout Europe did not arise in an ideological or cultural vacuum. Nor did it come to life only after 1948 or 1967. It sprung from Arab propaganda about Israel and Jews virtually identical to the old anti-Semitism and even has used texts such as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion as its sourcebook. The calumnies thrown at Israel and its supporters abroad are not the stuff of diplomatic complaints about specific incidents in which Israelis are wrongly alleged to have misbehaved, such as the Gaza offensive or the flotilla. Rather, they are rooted and often expressed in the language and spirit of “traditional” anti-Semitism in which the Jew is a foreign body who is falsely thought to be oppressing innocent gentiles, in this case the Palestinians. European anti-Semites, a growing group comprised of both Muslim immigrants from the Middle East and homegrown leftist intellectuals, aren’t merely upset with Israeli policies. They believe the Jewish state has no right to either exist or defend itself.

Such views give the lie to Elliot and Serwer’s beliefs that Middle East peace would diminish Euro Jew-hatred because such an event — in which Israel and its foes would agree to coexist and recognize each other’s legitimacy — is antithetical to the haters’ notion of justice. While their hate is exacerbated when the conflict rages, it is not the absence of peace that drives them to hate. It is the existence of Israel, no matter where its borders might be drawn. It is the refusal of the Jews to give up Israel and their insistence on defending themselves against terror that is fueling European anti-Semitism. But instead of focusing in on the bigoted motivations of the Jew-haters, what Gutman did was to treat their wish to eradicate Israel as morally equivalent to the desire of the Jews not to lose their state or their lives.

Treating this expression of anti-Semitism as a function of a political disagreement is fundamentally mistaken. Those who promote the canard that Israel is a racist entity that must be expunged from the map will not be appeased by a peace agreement the Palestinians have shown time and again they have no interest in signing. Solving the Middle East conflict will no more calm contemporary anti-Semites than any pacific gestures towards Germany by Jews would have satisfied the Nazis. The haters hate Israel because it is the Jewish state, not because of lies about conditions in Gaza.

. . . Turning the discussion about hatred for Jews in today’s Europe into one about what Israel can do to give the anti-Semites less ammunition as Gutman did misreads the problem. It is also an expression of irritation with Israel that has become commonplace in the Obama administration. Both Gutman and the president he serves need to be held to account. "

Univ of Calif Irvine threatens to arrest Dr. Terry Jones, candidate for US presidency, for speaking-out on campus against Sharia

The Univ of Calif at Irvine has earned a reputation for enabling pro-Islamism, but anti-American and anti-Israel activities, speakers and events.

Radical Islamist critics of America and Israel have been welcomed to speak and agitate on the campus. Muslim and leftist enemies of America, Israel, and capitalism are permitted to hold prominent, vitriolic exhibitions and rallies in the center of the campus.

UCI police threatened not to protect, but to arrest Dr. Terry Jones & Pastor
Wayne Sapp for speaking on campus without permit the school won't grant

The Muslim Students Union was found guilty of conspiring to thwart an invited address by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren last year- and suspended for a semester (under that name).

Dr. Terry Jones, Independent presidential candidate and leader of Stand With America Now ("SWAN") had intended to speak at the "soap box" outdoor forum at the "flagpoles" on the Univ of Calif at Irvine campus on December 1st. His group says that they filed the necessary formal requests- but the college did not respond and did not reply to their follow-up inquiries.

They announced that they would be seeking to stage a small outdoor forum anyway, but the Administration did not respond. Muslim activist groups, however, were organizing a counter-protest to the SWAN appearance. On the night before the scheduled rally, sheriffs from Irvine phoned and offered Dr. Jones and Pastor Wayne Sapp to escort their car to the University campus. Militant Muslims have announced a $2 million dollar bounty for anyone to kill Dr. Jones, and specific threats came in related to his appearing at UCI. When the sheriffs arrived, they informed SWAN that they would be bringing them to meet with the UCI Campus Police first.

The campus police told them that the University had denied them permission to speak, and moreover, that there were security threats made if Dr. Jones were to appear on the campus- which could be a threat not only to the SWAN visitors, but to others. asked them to withdraw from the campus, and when SWAN confirmed their intention to speak publicly, the Campus Police cited them for non-consent to withdraw. The police further warned Dr. Jones and Pastor Sapp that, in the interest of public safety, the administration was banishing them from the State University campus. Police threatened to arrest them not only if they tried to speak at the flagpoles, but if they were even found in a vehicle anywhere on campus within the next 7 days.

Rabbi Nachum Shifren, a candidate for US Senate from California who was on campus waiting to watch the SWAN forum, was told by police that there would be no rally and that he was considered trespassing. Campus police physically escorted him off of the campus. He compares his experience here with Pastor Sapp.

Rabbi Shifren relates his opinion about why UC Irvine's chancellor had campus police deny the SWAN's campus access. Six Congressmen attended, including Rep. Michelle Bachmann, who called on President Barack Obama “to accelerate covert operations and cyber operations in Iran and order the CIA Director to take all means necessary to stop Iran from getting the bomb before it is too late,” said Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

“And the Pentagon should prepare a war plan immediately to tell us what to do to prevent Iran from gaining those nuclear weapons,” she continued.

In Prime Minister Netanyahu’s video message, he praised Z.O.A. Exec. Director Morton Klein for being a “passionate Zionist” and the ZOA for ”promoting the truth no matter what the consequences are."

Netanyahu also lauded Beck, telling him, “You too have been fearless in defending Israel against the slanders that are hurled against [it]. You’ve done that with considerable personal cost, but you’ve never backed off, you’ve never flinched, you’ve never walked away. And I want to tell you how deeply we appreciate this stand of courage and integrity.”

Glenn Beck portrayed the challenges facing Israel and the Jewish people in apocalyptic terms -- as the ultimate showdown between good and evil. Beck was the only speaker at the dinner whose voice reached a pitch more feverish than Klein’s.

Beck said he came to the ZOA as a brother. “It’s personal,” he said repeatedly.

And clearly he has not been chastened by the urgings of some Jewish groups to tread lightly with the Holocaust analogies. Again and again he invoked them, saying the world stood on a precipice like the one it faced in 1939 -- only this time it’s worse, as not only is the world ignoring rising evil, he said, it is actively helping it along.

The Washington Times has published an analysis by Abraham Rabinovich from Jerusalem which theorizes that that Israel's prisoner swap of Gilad Shalit for 1,027 sentenced terrorists may be prelude to attack on Iran.

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to execute a 1,000-for-1 prisoner exchange last week despite his frequently voiced opposition to such lopsided deals is seen by several Israeli military commentators as an effort to “clear the deck” before possibly undertaking an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Amir Oren, the veteran military analyst for Ha'aretz newspaper, took note of Israel’s exchanging 1,027 Palestinian convicts for army Staff Sgt. Gilad Schalit, who had been captured by Hamas in 2006. Mr. Oren wrote that the price paid by Mr. Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak “can be interpreted only in a context that goes beyond that of the Gilad Schalit deal.”

He noted that Israeli leaders in the past have shown a readiness to absorb “a small loss” in order to attain a greater success, generally involving “some sort of military adventure.”
Mr. Oren offered another insight that he says may point Mr. Netanyahu toward military action against Iran.

Although the prime minister failed to make any enduring mark on history during his previous term or so far during his present term, Mr. Netanyahu may see Iran as an opportunity to achieve his Churchillian moment, Mr. Oren wrote. “The day is not far off, Netanyahu believes, when Churchill will emerge from him.”

An obscene moral equivalence has been established by this deal between the innocent and the guilty.
This equivalence is being played out in the coverage which describes the deal as a ‘prisoner swap’ or ‘prisoner exchange’ – more than 1000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails for one Israeli prisoner held by Hamas. But Shalit was a hostage, kidnapped in an act of illegal aggression by an organisation whose aim is the destruction of Israel and which allowed him not one visit by the Red Cross during his five year incarceration.

By contrast, the released Palestinians have not just been tried and punished according to due process of law, but include among their number not just those who have committed some of the worst terrorist atrocities in Israel’s history – such as the blowing up of Sbarro’s pizza restaurant in Jerusalem, where 16 people were murdered including five members of the Schijveschuurder family -- but even worse, some of the masterminds behind such atrocities.

The equivalence being drawn in the coverage of this deal reflects in turn the morally bankrupt ‘tit-for-tat’ analysis of the Arab war against Israel employed by so many in Britain and the west. For whenever Israel points out that any military action against the Palestinians is only in response to Palestinian attacks, many in Britain claim that those Palestinian attacks were only in response to previous Israeli attacks. Thus Israel is always painted as the ultimate aggressor.

This is entirely false. From the moment Israel was re-established in 1948, it has only ever launched military operations against the Arabs in response to actual or imminent Arab attacks. Yet many in Britain refuse to acknowledge the difference between murderous aggression and the defence against it.

They refuse to acknowledge that Hamas sets out to murder as many young Israelis as possible, whereas Israel goes to great lengths (not always successfully) to avoid civilian casualties. They refuse to acknowledge that the aim of every single military operation by Israel in Gaza is to defend and protect itself against attack by a fanatically Jew-hating enemy pledged not only to destroy Israel but to wipe out every single Jew on earth.

The refusal to acknowledge this crucial moral difference has meant that many in Britain and the west view Israel as the aggressor in the conflict, and the victimisation of Israelis is largely glossed over. So just as the anguish of Israeli terror victims’ families over the Shalit deal has been minimised by the media coverage – particularly in Israel itself, which reflects the malign nature of its own left-wing media class -- so the anguish of Israel itself as a state under permanent existential siege is routinely ignored, and Israel instead grotesquely portrayed as the aggressor in the region. . . .

What too many in Britain and the west still don’t understand is that what Israel is up against is what Britain and the west are now up against – not a violent campaign by people fighting for a state of their own but an Islamist cult of death, in which the murder of innocents is a cause for exultation and mass killers are lionised as heroes and religious martyrs, not just by Hamas but by the Fatah leadership in the West Bank too.

The five-year Shalit drama and its disturbing resolution have therefore come to symbolise the toxic cocktail of ignorance, misunderstanding, naivety, malice, cowardice, cynicism, incompetence and moral muddle by the so-called civilised world – including Israel itself -- that has actually served to perpetuate the Middle East impasse.

No decent person can fail to be moved by the return of Gilad Shalit to Israel. Few eyes will have been dry at his reunion with his family. Yet it has to be said that ultimately, this deal represents a triumph of heart over head and sentimentality over realism. . . .

Israel is now trapped between Hamas, Fatah, Hezbollah, Iran, Syria, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea – and yet is blamed for preventing peace by building apartments in the suburbs of Jerusalem. The infernal choice it was forced to make over Gilad Shalit was thus but the latest and most dramatic example of how the West has abandoned Israel to swing in the wind. Read it all

Since Israel allowed the PLO and its terror armies to move their bases from Tunis to Judea, Samaria, and Gaza in 1994, nearly 2,000 Israeli families have involuntarily paid the ultimate price in the “peace process.” The Shalit deal is a moral defeat- most especially for these families of the victims of terrorism: Israel just cancelled more than 900 life sentences to embrace again one soldier. Meir Schijveschuurder, who lost his parents and three of his siblings in the suicide bombing in the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem in 2001, yesterday declared against the deal: “We feel like a man who woke up in Germany a day after World War II.”

Terrorism is now sanctified throughout all the Palestinian areas. The streets are plastered with posters glorifying terrorists and suicide bombers. Children trade “martyr cards” the way Western children trade baseball cards. Necklaces with pictures of terrorists, many released today by Israel, are very popular. Signs on the walls of Palestinian kindergartens currently proclaim their pupils as “the martyrs of tomorrow.” Elementary-school principals commend their students for wanting to “tear their [Zionists’] bodies into little pieces and cause them more pain than they will ever know.” Unlike terrorists in other parts of the world, the Palestinian movement aspires to immortality and its violence is always “sacred.” That’s why the freed terrorists will return to kill the Jews.

The Almagor association revealed that 177 Israelis have been killed by prisoners released by Israel in previous deals. The Jews living in the settlements are afraid of a new round of killings. “Many terrorists have been allowed to return to live near our homes, it’s a shock and a disaster,” Hillel Weiss, professor of literature at Bar-Ilan University and a leader in the settlement community, tells me. The deal is a victory for terrorism, since Hamas can now justly demonstrate that killing Jews is infinitely more effective than negotiations in achieving their objectives. It will also be much easier to recruit terrorists when they are encouraged to believe that no matter how many Israelis they kill, there is every likelihood that, if apprehended, they will be released.

Releasing the terrorists meant saving Gilad’s life, but it also means that more Jews will die and more soldiers will be kidnapped. Now many Israelis ask: How many more lives are to be sacrificed before the rest of the released men — and those to be released in future exchanges — are put behind bars again? Appeasement breeds only death and destruction. Capitulating will culminate in greater disasters.

Marketing Gilad Schalit

Internal contradiction at the heart of the consensus for ransoming Schalit for terrorists renders it likely that the unanimity now surrounding the deal will evaporate soon.

Gilad Schalit is home. And that is wonderful. The terrorists Israel released in exchange for the IDF soldier held hostage by Hamas for more than five years are running around Judea, Samaria and Gaza promising to return to terror. And that is a nightmare.

. . . Given the media’s unchecked power to repeatedly manipulate public opinion to adhere to its radical ideological agenda, it is essential that the government and Knesset step in and reform the media market. Broadcast licensing procedures for television and radio must be deregulated. Television and radio must be open to competition. Broadcasters should be allowed to broadcast whatever they want whenever they want, and the market should dictate who rises and who falls. This is the only way to protect the public against manipulation, and the government from blackmail.

Five notes on the Schalit deal by Andrew Friedman in The Jerusalem Post 10/18/2011

Why did Noam and Aviva Schalit not turn to the Red Cross, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Brussels, Washington, London to help free their son?
One can certainly not fault the Schalit family for demanding the release of terrorists in light of Israel’s long history of making similar deals, nor the four-fifths of Israeli adults who supported the deal. But by nature, hostage crises require nerves of steel and a keen eye on the future.

Decisions, especially in situations of life-and-death, must be made as the result of cold, calculated reasoning.

Allowing emotions to overtake rational thinking is a recipe for disaster. . . .

IN THE absence of a clear policy (to guide future hostage crises) for the future, I cannot understand why Israel only released 1,027 prisoners.

With thousands more still in Israeli jails and clear evidence that kidnapping Israelis is an effective – and acceptable to Israel – form of lobbying for their release, the clock is ticking on the next hostage situation.

There is no reason to expect that Palestinian groups would end kidnapping operations and terror attacks were Israel to grant an across-the-board pardon to all Palestinian prisoners, but releasing them would at least remove one oft-mentioned Palestinian justification for kidnapping IDF soldiers.

Having ceded the moral justification of keeping murderers behind bars, and agreed to sacrifice civilians in future in exchange for Schalit, it is hard to justify keeping some killers in jail while others have been released.

The vast majority of Israelis consider all elements of the Palestinian struggle as terrorist acts, but the Palestinians consider armed struggle the only path to liberty.

Throughout decades of Israeli occupation, more than 250,000 Palestinians have been arrested and spent time in Israeli jails. These prisoners include young and old, men and women, liberals and fundamentalists, Muslims and Christians, university professors and illiterates, doctors and cancer patients, lawyers and thieves, and Palestinians who hold Palestinian, Israeli, Jordanian, US and French nationalities. The list even includes people with no nationality at all. . . .

Many parties are waiting to benefit from this swap, but most Gaza residents are dreaming today of the end of the siege now that Gilad Schalit is no longer held prisoner here. For us, the main question that remains is how long Gazans will have to wait to hear the whistle of ships anchored in the Gaza port.

The picture Bassam Nasser so proudly paints of Palestinian society, glaringly clarifies to all that the leaders of Gaza and its citizenry as a whole comprise one of the most despicable and detestable societies in the history of man.No Hollywood studio has ever created a villain as evil as the likes of Khaled Mashaal, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini or Hassan Nassrallah.

No Hollywood writer has ever written a script about an entire society of evil, millions of devout clones of a murderous, deviant ideology and eschatology.

The reality of Gaza today, and most of the Arab world, is too strange for fiction.

If you don’t believe me, take a five-minute stroll past the Hass Promenade in Jerusalem, one of the city’s most popular tourist stops, and you will witness a nearly unprecedented celebration in honor of the release 1,000 of the most despicable human beings ever born. Their supporters are dancing on cars, galloping through the streets on horses, shouting and screaming for joy. For what?

To welcome the woman who planned and drove the suicide bomber to Sbarro and murdered 15 young Jews and wounded over 100, for the “crime” of eating pizza in downtown Jerusalem. Other idols of their society include the person who murdered the Dickstein parents and their nine-year-old son, Shuvael, leaving behind eight orphans, aged one-to-17 years old. . . .

YOU CAN’T win a battle if you don’t know who the enemy is. I thank Nasser for so clearly describing the enemy we face; an entire society filled with hate, the desire to kill every Jew and every Westerner, with the hope of destroying the very moral ethic upon which we base our lives. It is an enemy with the primitiveness and intolerance that patiently executes its long term plan to violently impose a monolithic radical Islamic regime on every citizen of the world. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is their target.

The enemy we must face up to is radical Islam. Or perhaps it is Islam itself? A number of years ago I participated in a small gathering with then US Ambassador to Israel Dan Kurtzer, who said that the United States is deeply studying this question and hasn’t yet concluded whether the problem is only radical Islam or whether the ideology is so pervasive that it is Islam itself.

Saving ‘Private’ Schalit and the defenseless Jewish state by Gil Troy in The Jerusalem Post 10/18/201

A country’s right of self-defense is as basic as an individual’s right to be free. For nearly two millennia, Jews could not defend themselves. Centuries of oppression followed, resulting in the Holocaust in Europe, and, ultimately, mass expulsions from the Arab world. Yet in only doubting one country, Israel, when it defends itself, world opinion is reverting to the traditional status quo, trying to keep Jews defenseless.

Netanyahu should call on President Barack Obama to explain, after Israel releases 1027 convicted terrorists, why the United States can’t, for goodwill, release Jonathan Pollard, who has served longer than any other spy ever convicted for espionage benefiting an American ally.
