Civic Center Floating Island Unveiling

On Friday June 3, 2016 at 4 PM please join the Gallinas Watershed Council (GWC) and Marin County Supervisor Damon Connolly for the official unveiling of the Civic Center Lagoon FLOATING ISLANDS.

GWC volunteers will kayak to the islands and remove the temporary fencing around the two Floating Islands to reveal their full glory. The fencing was to keep birds from ruining the islands while the native plants were getting established.

The floating islands are biofilters that were launched in October 2015 during the annual Bioneers Conference. They demonstrate how to clean the water of the lagoon using biomimicry, where nature-based technology works to remove excess nutrients.

We will meet on the Children's Island in the Civic Center lagoon at 4PM. This event will take 30 minutes.

Alex Kahl of Kahl Consultants helped launch this Civic Center Watershed Restoration (CCWR) project along with many local volunteers including students from the Marin School of Environmental Leadership.

The fundamentals of nonprofit management for anyone who has ever thought of starting a nonprofit or charitable project

SAN RAFAEL, CA – MarinLink, the Marin County incubator and fiscal sponsor for start-up nonprofit projects, announces its next MarinLink University Course, a ten-module program providing an overview of nonprofit governance, strategies, and tactics. The first class will be held Wednesday, February 4th. Consecutive classes will be held at the Northgate Mall community meeting room every three weeks from 5–7:30 pm, a time convenient for working adults. The course includes a resource binder, contact list, and will culminate with a certificate of completion.

MarinLink University designed this program to provide nonprofit strategic skill sets based specifically on the needs of its over 100 fiscally sponsored projects. The modules include strategic leadership, financial and legal tools, marketing skills, and measurement tools to those new to the nonprofit sector or those looking to hone their expertise.

MarinLink acts as an incubator and fiscal sponsor to a wide array of groups and individuals. Community events such as Bioneers, businesses wishing to start a nonprofit foundation such as Extrafood.org are examples of varied MarinLink projects which also include community gardens, education programs, art organizations, and many others.

“MarinLink is excited to offer this first foundational series of classes for 2016,” says Executive Director Mary O’Mara. “The consultants who helped us develop this program have invested hundreds of hands-on hours helping our projects achieve success.”

Presenters include community experts along with leadership expert Carl Welte. His book Making and Fulfilling your Dreams as a Leader will be included in the curriculum along with a resource binder and list of contacts.

On Saturday, January 23rd, Marin Carbon Project co-founder and agro-ecologist Dr. Jeffrey Creque, and Carbon Cycle Institute Policy Director Torri Estrada, will talk about “boots on the ground” sequestering carbon on farm and public land, their work through Resource Conservation Districts around the State, the Governor’s “Healthy Soils Initiative,” and other policy advances in supporting use of photosynthesis to reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

Their remarks will be followed by presentations by Rebecca Burges, Executive Director of the Fibershed Project, and Kimberly Sheibly, Marin Sanitary Service’s Municipal Contracts and Communications Manager. Rebecca’s work demonstrates how we can restore the planet’s resource base while meeting our needs for food, fuel, fiber and flora. Kimberly will describe efforts to convert customers to recycling food and other organic waste so it becomes part of the solution rather than going into landfill, where it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

Richard believed that his skill is to bring a meditative influence to a conflict to help people engage constructively, which will result in a satisfactory and permanent closing of the case. After a 33 year career as a builder of fine homes and light commercial buildings, He is now focus on construction project management and serve as a professional mediator.

Construction Resolution Experience
In 33 years spent creating architecturally challenging structures he have mediated one hundred disputes between highly invested, sometimes highly emotional individuals. He has worked out very interesting and complex solutions between:

Owners and sub-contractors

Subcontractors and other subs on the same site

Subcontractors and their own employees working at sites

Employees with each other

These conflicts carry the added urgency of adverse impact on the schedule for the entire project if not addressed and resolved within a day or two.

Working together, I give you reliable, authoritative input that is relevant to your current design, resulting in a “menu” of green features to present to your client. Richard is using his vast experience and knowledge gained in 37 years of building architecturally demanding projects in California and Colorado helping owners in the role of an Owner’s Project Manager. It is the OR’s role to provide guidance and information to eliminate uncertainties and ensure the Owner’s best interests are at the heart of every decision made and attempt ensure the best products and practices are employed.

Richard E. Wodehouse started as a custom builder in San Diego County, California, where he quickly gained a reputation as being one of the area’s finest contractors. After 15 years, he established operations in Telluride, Colorado. Known for his ability to successfully complete architecturally-challenging projects, Richard developed a close working relationship with both world-renowned and local architects. In 1999, he opened a second office in Aspen, Colorado. Richard now lives in Marin County where he is a construction project manager.

Richard’s projects have been featured in such magazines as Architectural Record, Custom Builder, Remodeling Ideas, Progressive Architecture, Colorado Homes & Life-Styles, Telluride Style, and Sojourner Magazine. It also democratizes money as it enables participating members to create Bay Bucks as and when they need it. The money each member creates is backed by their own goods and services. Bay Bucks is not convertible to US dollars. This means 100% of Bay Bucks re-circulates in the region to build local prosperity.

We launched in Jan 2013 in San Francisco, and already have more than 100 local businesses in our network.
