4. Ohh La La - The Faces
All I could find was a video of the lyrics of the original version, so feel free to sing along. I mean the late 80s Ronnie Wood performance is out there if that's your thing, but I think this is much better. Most members of the Faces went on to other successful musical ventures. Rod Stewart, we all know, Ronnie Wood went on to join the Stones, Kenney Jones was the first drummer that replaced Keith Moon in the Who.

5. Unit Four Plus Two
Not too much to say about these guys. "Concrete and Clay" is a pretty catchy Brit Pop tune from 1967, great find and the placement in Rushmore is fantastic.

6. I am Waiting - The Rolling Stones
This song only appeared in the movie and wasn't on the actual Soundtrack Release. You all know about the Stones, so I really don't feel the need to say much. This can be found on the record "Aftermath" and I find that there is a very haunting yet comfortable mood set in this song. Oh yeah, Oh yeah....

Rushmore

The other night I was reminded how good the music in Rushmore is. I hadn't seen the movie or thought about the sountrack in quite sometime. Originally I was just going to list three songs and move on, but the tunes are so solid that I'm going to try to cover the bulk of the movie. So here is part 1. S

1. The Kinks - Nothing in This World
This can be found on the Kinks album "Kinda Kinks" which was released in 1965. This certainly not one of the songs that most people think of right away when talking about the Kinks. Just a really solid tune. The song played through my favorite scene in the movie where Bill Murray does a cannon ball off the high diving board at his kids birthday party. Brilliant.

2. Cat Stevens - Here Comes My Baby
From Cat Steven's first album "Matthew and Son" and obvioulsy before he went off the deep end. I often think about where he would have gone musicially if he had not converted to Islam in the late '70s. This is from the montage scene in Rushmore where Max starts to get into his groove at his new school.

3. The Creation - Making Time
The Creation was a band out of England from the late '60s playing in a similar vein to the Who. They really didn't stick around for too long, but long enough for Ron Wood to do a stint with the band. The song "Making Time" was used in one of the first scenes in Rushmore.

Little Feat

I've spent a good amount of time listening to Little Feat lately. For those of you who aren't that familiar with Little Feat, I suggest you check them out. Their album Waiting for Columbus is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Here's a couple of Little Feat tunes to check out. The first is Willin' which became an anthem of sorts for truck drivers, and rumored to be the reason that Lowell George was asked to leave the Mothers by Frank Zappa.

Here's another one of Little Feat's classic tunes "Fat Man in the Bathtub." Song has a great groove, and sweet slide guitar lines.

Well, every so often this song needs to get played. ESPN has put together a montage for the first Michael Jordan retirement that was just sick and this song was used as the soundtrack. When one of my housemates in college moved out, I set up the speakers in the window and blasted this when he was loading the moving truck and leaving town. I always think of this tune as a changing of the guards. Please take note of how amazing Kevin Cronin's hair is.

I queued up an episode of Eastbound & Down last night because it is the shit. Good news is that they have renewed and there will be another season of awesomness. The opening song is "Going Down" by blues legend Freddie King. This song kicks a whole shit-ton of ass which is why they use it for the opening credits. Here's a live version from the 70's.

For those of you who have not seen this show, I suggest you see it immediately. There are only 6 episodes in the first season and it's straight up pure comedy gold. Here's a clip so you can get a little taste of how awesome this is.

I caught some of Napoleon Dynamite on TV the other day and was curious as to what the name of the band was that played the song when they were at the prom. Turns out the band's name is Alphaville and the song is called "Forever Young." Not that same one that Rod sings, but it's different. They're a German band originally called Forever Young, but then they changed their name to Alphaville. Anyway, here it is. Are you gonna drop the bomb or not?

Blitzen Trapper has a new record entitled "Furr" that has been released. I took a listen to it yesterday and then listened to it again. I think it's a solid album that you can listen from start to finish without having to skip songs. It seems to be a much more focused album than "Wild Mountain Nation" which was released last year. We've got a classic under-rated nugget today. "Never Been any Reason" by Head East. This is always one of those songs that comes on the radio during the Memorial Day or Labor Day count downs, and I always turn the radio up a few notches when it's on. Maybe it's because this is not a song that they abuse on the radio these days like Seeger or the Rolling Stones. This song really has it all, back and forth verses, big chorus, moog synth, cowbell, driving guitar and vocal/bass break down.

I know that there isn't much video here, but just look at these guys! Incredible rock gear. In fact, if anyone knows where I can get a shirt like the dude on the left, please let me know.

I can't lie, I'm pretty excited about the really good odds that Phish will be getting back together. Due to all of the rumors that are kicking around I've been listening to some of the old shows, and revisiting some of stories from the land of Gamehendge. With Big Red hitting the road in a couple of weeks, it just seems right to unload another nugget from the boys. This weekend I am going to get my face melted off. I'll be seeing My Morning Jacket in Boston. I have never seen them play a bad show, and I'm looking forward to hearing some of their new songs live. So for today's nugget I thought that I would dig up the performance that made me a fan.
I had been hearing great things about this band around the end of 2002, and listened to a couple of their songs but once I saw this performance on Conan O'Brien on their promo tour for "It Still Moves" I was hooked. I had never been that impressed by a band on a late night show that prompted me to go and buy the album the next day.

This is a huge find. I'd like to thank SmoothJD for bringing this to my attention. What we've got today is Kenny Rogers with First Edition playing "Just Dropped In." I've never seen Rogers treat an axe like that let alone hold an axe. This is serious...El Duderino is pleased for sure.

Cheesesteak and Dr. Dog

What is Philly? So Dr. Dog has been getting quite a bit of press lately. If you haven't heard these guys, they are worth checking out. Straight up heavy Beatles influence, with a hip check from the Beach Boys. They do some very interesting things in their tunes. It's nice that there are some bands still doing cool shit.

Check out the rug Jerry's wearing! Amazing, I think more people should rock this. Nice to hear a live version of Mountains of the Moon, strange setting though. Jerry compares Mickey and Billy (the drummers) to a "serpent that eats it's own tail"

"I Know You Rider" from Alpine Valley in 1989. Jerry delivers a solid "headlight" line and unleashes some ferocious licks. Yes, I know, Bobby's got the shorts on.

Finally, I couldn't not post this. This is my favorite version of "Morning Dew" ever. It's from 9/18/87 at MSG. I wore this tape out back in the day. Jerry causes a nuclear meltdown. Vocals are very strong, and the guitar solos and tone are genius. You'll find him unzipped in the tuck at the end of the song. Enjoy...then listen again.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. As promised this is part 3 of 3 in the, "So you like Uncle Tupelo, but who do you like better, Son Volt or Wilco?" game. Well, as we know when Uncle Tupelo broke up two bands, Son Volt and Wilco were formed. Wilco, was formed by Jeff Tweedy along with John Stiratt, Ken Coomer and Max Johnston, who were at the time a part of the final Uncle Tupelo line up. Their first album entitled "A.M." was released in 1995 and I consider it to pick up right where Uncle Tupelo left off. However, each album after "A.M" has been different and innovative then the next. Although there has been a rotating cast of band members over the years, the band has continued to push the envelope in the studio, as well as with their song craftsmanship and live performances.

In 2002 released "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" which garnered an amazing amount of media attention due to record label troubles. This is the album that brought Wilco to the masses.

The band continues to tour constantly as well as work on new material. They have an incredible line up right now, along with Tweedy and Stiratt, also in the band are Glen Kotche, Mikael Jorgenson, Pat Sansone, and guitar god Nels Cline. The band is at the top of their game right now, so if you have the opportunity to see them....do your self a favor and go see them.

Ladies and Gentlemen I know I usually don't post on the weekend, but this can't wait until Tuesday (part 3 of 3 of "whose better" is on Monday). I have found a rare live clip of Jay Ferguson performing "Thunder Island." I had a dream about this song last night, which isn't all that uncommon seeing as I listened to it yesterday. But here is when shit gets weird. I went out for breakfast this morning and sure enough, "Thunder Island" comes blasting over the speakers in the restaurant! I mean eggs, toast, corned beef hash and Jay Ferguson....Big Morning! So, here's the new clip of Jay and the band performing "Thunder Island" from 1980.
