A line at the bottom of the Gmail window indicates when your account was last used and also links to more-complete usage info.

You can use this activity log to determine whether someone has guessed your password and taken over your account.

If you're a Gmail user and are concerned as to whether your account password has been compromised, there's a link at the bottom of the screen that shows when your account was used and from where.

OpenDNS, a free service that blocks dangerous sites so you can browse the Web securely.
OpenDNS has a few tricky gotchas for the unwary, but most of the problems can be solved if you set up an account and take advantage of a few tweaks.
OpenDNS uses a global network of servers that can be redirected in case of overload or failure. The service's main page shows the servers' locations in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, OpenDNS claims to resolve requests quicker than the DNS servers of most IPSs, which means pages should load faster.
OpenDNS can block your browser from surfing to phishing sites and other kinds of undesirable content. The service also corrects typos you make, such as google.cmo, and lets you create URL shortcuts for quick access to the sites you visit most often.

OpenDNS is currently beta-testing a new SmartCache feature that loads the last known-good address for a Web site, even if its nameserver is offline. This kind of outage can happen due to distributed denial of service attacks, for example. This spring, Amazon.com and other big-name sites were unavailable for several hours due to this type of assault,

The correct way to set up OpenDNS .

Full control of your OpenDNS experience requires that you create an account on OpenDNS.com. Without an account, you're stuck using the default preferences, which may not work for your setup. For example, you may not be able to access a VPN (virtual private network) or Windows Home Server without changing your account preferences.

Similarly, you can't take advantage of OpenDNS's powerful filtering options without establishing an account. By default, OpenDNS uses a so-called PhishTank list to block phishing sites; the list is maintained by OpenDNS itself. But if you're a parent or employer who also wants to block sites in such categories as pornography, illegal downloads, social networking, or video sharing, you need to do so by configuring your account preferences.

To set up a free account, simply go to OpenDNS.com and sign up. You must also change the DNS servers in your router to the two IP addresses mentioned above. Instructions for doing this on most routers can be found on the Use OpenDNS page. Once your account is confirmed, sign in at the OpenDNS site and open the Dashboard to change your account preferences

To customize OpenDNS for a typical home PC user, you would first add your home network using the Networks tab. By configuring OpenDNS in your router and adding your home network, you can protect all your computers and network devices — including smartphones that connect via Wi-Fi — with the same account settings. If you use multiple networks, you can add them all under the same account.

When you travel, you can change the DNS settings for your laptop's Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters to connect to OpenDNS directly, rather than relying on your home network to make the connection. Instructions for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers are available on the OpenDNS Change DNS settings page. (It's fine to use both computer and router OpenDNS at the same time.)

Next, click the Settings tab to choose and customize your Web-filtering preferences. I have mine set at the second level, Low, which blocks phishing and pornography sites. Parents may want to choose a higher level of protection. You can also create custom lists of allowed and blocked sites, regardless of the level of protection you select.

Accessing the real OpenDNS mother lode, however, may be a bit more difficult for the typical user to figure out. Click Settings, Advanced Settings. (See Figure 2.) This is where you can add your VPN or Web server, activate the SmartCache feature, and enable dynamic IP updating — which is particularly useful for travelers.

To reach a VPN or corporate intranet domain, or to access such resources as network printers and network shares, you have two options. For home networks, simply add a "Domain typo exception" in the name of your VPN server or network domain; for example, vpn.mycompany.com. Together with dynamic IP updating, this solves a problem with remote access and Windows Home Server.

If you're already running a local DNS server such as Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory, your second option is to forward only external DNS requests to the OpenDNS servers and continue to resolve local domains locally. In this case, you update the external DNS settings to OpenDNS on your server, not in your router or client computers.

People who rely on a dynamic IP address from their ISP or who travel frequently can download and install the OpenDNS Updater, which is available on the OpenDNS Support page.

Putting OpenDNS to the speed-comparison test

Once you've got OpenDNS configured properly, it's time to try it out. First, you can attempt to verify OpenDNS's speed claims with the handy DNS Performance Test from Silverwolf's Auditorium. Run the test on your regular ISP's DNS servers and on OpenDNS's servers.

These new capabilities, called Libraries and Homegroups, make finding files and connecting with resources on other PCs so easy you'll think you're using a Mac!

Searching Libraries beats searching folders:

Anyone who's used Windows Media Player in XP or Vista has encountered the Libraries concept. WMP starts with your personal Music folder and your PC's Public Music folder, then allows you to add other folders to this Library. For example, you can add a music folder on an external hard drive to WMP's Library or link to music folders on other networked computers or connect with a music folder on a Windows Home Server.

When you add a folder to WMP's Library, it doesn't copy the music. Instead, the program provides easy access to all of the song files in the Library, tracks them, and lets you search and work with them as a group.

There are no limitations to the folders you can add to a WMP Library. As long as your computer can get at the folders — the external drive is plugged into the computer, say, or there are no security rules blocking access to the other computer — WMP treats the music in those folders more or less the same way they would be treated if the files were stored on your own PC.

Windows 7 brings the WMP concept of Libraries to the entire Windows file system. You start with four libraries: Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. As you would expect, the Pictures Library has your Pictures folder and the PC's Public Pictures Folder, Documents has your Documents folder and Public Documents, and so on. Very simple hooks let you add more folders to those Libraries or create entirely new Libraries.

When Microsoft reworked Windows 7's Library routines, the company also enhanced the OS's search function. To put it bluntly, searching a Win7 Library just plain works. Vista's search interface suffers from the late changes Microsoft made to the OS, which did away with some planned new features but retained vestiges that served only to bollix things up. By contrast, Win7's search interface benefits from a ground-up design and is much less confusing.

Here's the magical part: When an application running under Windows 7 looks for the Documents folder, Win7 hands it the entire Documents Library. If you start a graphics program and click File, Open, you don't go to your Pictures folder. Instead, you open up the Pictures Library.

Why is this a big deal? Imagine that you have a folder on another computer containing documents you commonly use. When you add that folder to your Documents Library, every time you crank up Word and click File, Open, the contents of that remote folder are staring right at you. By the way, Windows Media Player in Win7 doesn't need separate settings to handle Libraries, because Windows takes care of everything behind the scenes.

Think of Libraries as "Folders: The Next Generation."

Create virtual networks via Homegroups:

If you've ever used a house key, you know how to use Homegroups. OK, that's Microsoft's analogy, and the process isn't quite that easy, but it's close.

First, some background: The first time you connect a Vista PC to a network, you're asked whether the network is Public, Work, or Home. If you dig deep into the bowels of Vista, however, you discover that there's no real difference between a Work network and a Home network.

By contrast, Windows 7's Home networks are special, because they allow you to set up Homegroups. It doesn't matter whether the network is really in your home, your home office, or a camouflaged Winnebago parked outside the Pentagon. Home networks get treated differently. (In Windows 7, Work networks and Public networks function pretty much the same way they do in Vista.)

If you identify a network as a Home network, Windows 7 reaches out to all the other Windows 7 computers on the network and asks whether they're part of something called a Homegroup. If Windows 7 finds a Homegroup, it asks you to provide the password for the Homegroup. Enter the correct password and — boom! You're suddenly attached and sharing all sorts of resources with other computers in the Homegroup.

There are no weird settings to decipher and none of Vista's 20 questions about Network Discovery, File Sharing, and Password-Protected Sharing. Just a nice, simple network — and creating it requires only a password and a couple of clicks.

If there's no pre-existing Homegroup, Windows 7 offers to set one up. Other Windows 7 computers on the network identify it as a "Home" network and can link to it simply by entering the Homegroup password. Easy — you know, the way it's supposed to be (thanks, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young).

By default, computers in a Homegroup share their Pictures, Music, and Video Libraries. Note: I'm talking about Libraries, not folders. The Homegroup members also share their printers by default. However, you're asked whether you want to share your Documents Library; some people will want to, while others won't, primarily for security purposes.

If Homegroups sound like precisely the kind of sharing you want for your small office, remember to tell Windows 7 that you're on a "Home" network. The rest of the process is as easy as falling off a log.

Microsoft plans to make Windows 7 "Release Candidate" available to the general public. Last week, the company began offering Windows 7 RC to professional users who belong to its TechNet and MSDN communities.

Windows 7 RC contains most of the features that will be included in the final version of the OS, and it's been tested for compatibility with hardware and software from most major vendors through a months-long beta program. Still, Microsoft typically warns computer users not to use prerelease software for critical tasks or in business production environments.

Windows 7 RC will function until June 1, 2010. After that, users will need to upgrade to a full, paid version of the operating system.

User Account Control irritated many Windows Vista users with its constant warnings that ‘Windows needs your permission to continue’. Windows 7 improves the situation by displaying fewer warnings and providing additional UAC tweaks. Tell the system not to raise warnings if you change Windows settings and you’ll be able to use the Control Panel without any prompts. Alerts will only appear if a program tries to perform a similar action.

As a knowledgeable PC user, it’s likely that you’re called upon to troubleshoot friends’ computer problems, which can be tricky if they find it difficult to describe what's going on. Windows 7 has a handy tool to solve this problem. If an application is misbehaving under Windows 7, all the flummoxed PC user needs to do is launch the Problem Steps Recorder, click ‘Record’ and work through whatever task they’re trying to complete. Every click and keypress that they make will be recorded, packaged up with screen grabs and saved into a single zipped MHTML file, ready for emailing to you. It’s a simple tool that's going to save many people hours of time.

3. Switch desktops between devices

Windows 7 finally introduces a standard way to switch your desktop display between monitors, or from a monitor to a projector. Just press [Windows]+[P] and select the display that you need.

4. Create and mount VHD files

Microsoft’s Virtual PC stores the hard drives for its virtual machines in VHD files. Windows 7 finally lets you mount these so that they’re freely accessible from the host system (launch ‘diskmgmt.msc’ and click ‘Action | Attach VHD’).

You can also create a virtual drive of your own. It’ll work exactly like any other drive – you can install programs there, store data, whatever you like – but it’s really just a VHD file. Detach it and the drive will disappear, leaving no evidence that it was ever there.

Best of all, in Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate you’ll even be able to boot from a VHD file, letting you install and try out another operating system without partitioning your hard drive.

5. New Features For Old Favorites

Windows 7 finally sees Paint and WordPad get a welcome facelift. Paint now provides easy access to brushes like ‘oil’, ‘crayon’ and ‘pencil’. WordPad adds a Zoom feature as well as support for saving documents in Office 2007 ‘.docx’ or OpenDocument ‘.odt’ formats.Both use an Office 2007-style Ribbon interface.

Arguably the best additions appear in the Windows Calculator. Maths wizards will enjoy the powerful new Statistics and Programmer modes, while everyone else will benefit from the new options available in Standard mode. This provides handy unit conversions (length, weight, volume and so on), date calculations (how many days between these two dates?) and templates to help you calculate mortgage rates, vehicle mileage and other tricky things.

6. Burn ISO images

It’s taken Microsoft a very long time, but Windows 7 finally provides a direct way to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. Just double-click the ISO image, choose your DVD writer, click ‘Burn’ and your disc will be created.

7. Calibrate your screen correctly

You’ve opened up your latest digital photos, but the contrast doesn't look quite right. That’s easily tweaked with a graphics editor, but are you sure that the problem is with your image? Could it really be the way that your monitor is set up? Windows 7 can help resolve these issues with the new Display Colour Calibration Wizard. It’s easy to follow and in just a few steps will have your brightness, contrast and colour settings configured correctly.

1.Format the text in sticky notes

Another new feature in Windows 7 is the built-in Sticky Notes application. You’ll find it on the Start menu. You’ve probably already discovered that you can change the color of notes by right-clicking and selecting a new color. You may also have figured out that you can use the Ctrl + B and Ctrl + I shortcuts to format the text as bold or italic. But did you know that you can make bulleted and numbered lists in your sticky notes, and increase or decrease the text size? Here are some more handy keyboard shortcuts that work within sticky notes:

Ctrl + Shift + L (once): Bulleted list
Ctrl + Shift + L (twice): Numbered list
Ctrl + Shift + >: Increase text size
Ctrl + Shift + <: Decrease text size
Ctrl + U: Underline
Ctrl + T: Strikethrough

2: Turn off Windows features

Microsoft gives you much more flexibility with Windows 7, allowing you to turn off Windows components — such as Internet Explorer, Windows Search, the Gadget platform, and media features — that you couldn’t disable in earlier versions of Windows. Here’s how:

Click Start | Control Panel and select Programs And Features.
In the left pane, click Turn Windows Features On Or Off.
Simply select or deselect the check boxes to enable or disable the various Windows features, as shown in Figure B, then click OK.

3: Make Adobe Reader display PDFs properly

If you’ve installed Adobe Reader in Windows 7, you may notice that sometimes when you try to open a PDF file, you get an error message and the file doesn’t open. It seems Adobe doesn’t play well with IE 8 in Windows 7 and won’t open the files (or at least won’t open some of them) in the browser.

If you set Adobe not to display PDFs in the browser, it will open them without any problems. Here’s how to configure that:

Open Adobe Reader.
Click Edit | Preferences.
Click Internet in the left Categories pane.
Under Web Browser Options, deselect the Display PDF In Browser check box and click OK.

4: Start Windows 7 with multiple cores

If you have a dual- or quad-core processor (or if you’re really lucky and have dual quad-core processors), you can configure Windows 7 to boot using more than one core for faster startup. Here’s how:

Click Start and type msconfig.exe in the Search box.
Click it in the list to open it.
In the System Configuration dialog box, click the Boot tab.
Click the Advanced Options button.
Select the Number of processors check box and choose the number of processors you want to use, as shown in Figure C.
Click OK in both dialog boxes to close them.

You can configure Windows 7 to start with two or more processors or cores.

5: Install Windows 7 from a USB thumb drive

If you’re so impressed with Windows 7 on your desktop computer that you want to install it on your laptop, what do you do if the laptop is an ultra compact that doesn’t have a DVD drive? Of course, you could connect a USB DVD drive, if you have one. Or you could put the installation files on a network drive and connect to it over the network.

But here’s another option that works surprisingly well: Copy the contents of the Windows 7 ISO image to a 4 GB or larger USB thumb drive (or a flash memory card, if the laptop has a built-in reader). Installing the OS this way is likely to be faster than using a DVD.

Import your contacts from Outlook 2007

• Step 1: Open Outlook 2007 and export your contacts using Outlook's Import/Export feature. Click File, Import and Export, select Export to a file, choose Comma Separated Values (Windows), click Contacts, and choose a path and file name to save the file to. Exit Outlook 2007.

"Downgrading" from Vista to XP

With your XP installation CD and your application discs in hand (and maybe a cup o' Joe), you're ready to begin:

Step 1. Back up your data. Unfortunately, you can't restore in XP a backup that you created using Vista's Backup and Restore Center. That means you have to either back up your data files manually or use a third-party backup tool that works in both XP and Vista. One such program is 2BrightSparks' SyncBack (more info), which is available in free and paid versions.

Don't bother backing up your applications; you'll need to reinstall them from their installation CDs after XP is back in place.

Do back up the folders that your portable apps use to store their data. The portable apps themselves won't need to be reinstalled, but you'll have to restore their data files from the backup. Managing portable apps is discussed in the Oct. 18, 2007, Top Story, "Free software on USB enables portable computing."

Step 2. If necessary, configure your BIOS to boot your computer from a CD, if one is present. Insert your XP installation disk and reboot.

Step 3. When XP setup loads, follow the on-screen prompts to accept the license agreement and continue installing XP. When you get to the screen prompting you for the partition on which to install XP, select the one containing Vista and press D to delete the partition. You'll need to press Enter and then L to confirm that you want to delete all data and software on the partition.

Step 4. Once you've returned to the partitioning screen, select the unpartitioned space that used to be Vista. You may see that this space has been selected for you automatically. Next, press C to create a partition. Specify the desired partition size, or press Enter to accept the default allotment, which is the maximum possible partition. (Simply pressing Enter instead of C also creates a new partition of the default size.)

Step 5. If you're still seeing the partition screen, make sure the desired partition is selected and press Enter. Choose the option that formats the disk as NTFS and press Enter again.

Step 6. Follow the prompts on-screen to continue the XP installation.

Step 7. Reinstall your applications and restore your data from your backup.

That's all there is to it. If you ever change your mind, you can always insert your Vista DVD and upgrade from XP to Vista all over again.

Instal.wim file missing during installation of WINDOWS 7

RECENTLY I downloaded beta version of new windows from MS ...windows 7.

I downloaded 32 bit in English.

The size of ISO file was 2.43GB(2,618,793,984 bytes).

I burned the ISO file using Nero to a DVD.

I decided to go for clean installation in new drive d keeping XP in c.when I started the installation it load up the file and and then stopped displaying the error

"Windows could not collect information for [OSImage] since the specified image file [install.wim] does not exist."

Then I tried google but Got this result that

1. Download the .iso again (about 10 hours on a low speed DSL connection)

2.Size should be 2.4 or if less then re download the ISO image

3. Or use different burning software (I used Nero 6.6.1.15)

BUT

I tried this

I INSTALLED THE THE WINDOWS 7 SITTING IN XP ENVIRONMENT(just running the DVD by logging in xp and then install in new drive)...and it worked

no error this time and was able to install my windows 7.

So no need to download new file.

Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts

Let's kick off with keyboard shortcuts – the first thing every power user must memorize with working with a new operating system. In Windows 7, we’ve uncovered several new sets of essential time-saving shortcuts that will make your mouse jealous with neglect.

Alt + P
In Windows Explorer, activate an additional file preview pane to the right side of the window with this new shortcut. This panel is great for previewing images in your photos directory.

Windows + + (plus key) Windows + - (minus key)
Pressing the Windows and plus or minus keys activates the Magnifier, which lets you zoom in on the entire desktop or open a rectangular magnifying lens to zoom in and out of parts of your screen. You can customize the Magnifier options to follow your mouse pointer or keyboard cursor. Keep in mind that so far, the Magnifier only works when Aero desktop is enabled.

Windows + Up Windows + Down

If a window is not maximized, pressing Windows + Up will fill it to your screen. Windows + Down will minimize that active window. Unfortunately, pressing Windows + Up again while a window is minimized won’t return it to its former state.

Windows + Shift + Up
Similar to the shortcut above, hitting these three keys while a window is active will stretch it vertically to the maximum desktop height. The width of the window will however stay the same. Pressing Windows + Down will restore it to its previous size.

Windows + Left Windows + Right
One of the new features of Windows 7 is the ability to automatically make a window fill up half of your screen by dragging to the left or right. This pair of shortcuts performs the same function without your mouse. Once a window is fixed to one side of the screen, you can repeat the shortcut to flip it to the other side. This is useful if you’re extending a desktop across multiple monitors, which prevents you from executing this trick with a mouse.

Windows + Home

This shortcut performs a similar function to hovering over a window’s peek menu thumbnail in the Taskbar. The active window will stay on your desktop while every other open application is minimized. Pressing this shortcut again will restore all the other windows.

Automatically opens up a new Explorer window to show your Libraries folder.

Windows + P
Manage your multiple-monitor more efficiently with this handy shortcut. Windows + P opens up a small overlay that lets you configure a second display or projector. You can switch from a single monitor to dual-display in either mirror or extend desktop mode.

Windows + Shift + Left Windows + Shift + Right

If you are using two or more displays (and who isn’t, these days?), memorize this shortcut to easily move a window from one screen to the other. The window retains its size and relative position on the new screen, which his useful when working with multiple documents. Utilize that real estate!

Windows + [Number]

Programs (and new instances) pinned to your Taskbar can be launched by hitting Windows and the number corresponding to its placement on the Taskbar. Windows + 1, for example, launches the first application, while Windows + 4 will launch the fourth. We realize that this is actually one key-press more than just clicking the icon with your mouse, but it saves your hand the trouble of leaving the comfort of the keyboard.

Windows + T
Like Alt + Tab (still our all time favorite Windows specific shortcut), Windows + T cycles through your open programs via the Taskbar’s peek menu.

Windows + Space
This combo performs the same function as moving your mouse to the bottom right of the Taskbar. It makes every active window transparent so you can view your desktop. The windows only remain transparent as long as you’re holding down the Windows key.

Ctrl + Shift + Click

Hold down Ctrl and Shift while launching an application from the Taskbar or start menu to launch it with full administrative rights.

Ctrl + Click

Hold down Ctrl while repeatedly clicking a program icon in the Taskbar will toggle between the instances of that application, like multiple Firefox windows (though not browser tabs).

Use USB to install windows 7

So Windows 7 beta is out the door and you are ready to begin your beta experience. Over the next few months there will be additional builds for Windows 7 (x86 and x64) as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 and that leads to a lot of installs and a lot of DVD burning and useless DVDs as soon as a new build is out. So why not install from USB or whatever other removable media your computer can boot from? Insert your removable media into a Windows XP or Vista PC and run the following commands from an elevated command prompt.

diskpart
list disk (find the disk number for the removable media)
select disk #
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign letter=y (or any free drive letter)
exit

Once that is complete mount the ISO and run the following command.

xcopy x:\*.* /s/e/f y:\

Where “x” is the drive letter of the mounted ISO. Once complete boot off the device and install the OS. When a new Windows 7 or 2008 R2 build is released, simply delete the contents, rerun the xcopy command and you are ready to go again. As a note this also works for Windows Vista and Server 2008 but you already figured that out :)

Windows 7, even in beta, is a very fast, stable operating system, and appears very close to being ready for prime time. But is it really that much better than Vista --- and should you upgrade?

The Jump List will improve your productivity

Right-click an application's icon in the taskbar or click a small arrow next to its icon in the the Most Recently Used application list, and you'll find the Jump List. (See the screenshot below.) You'll see a history list of the most recent open files -- or Web sites, in the case of Internet Explorer -- as well as a variety of tasks associated with that application. It makes finding files and performing various tasks much faster.

It's just plain faster

One of the biggest complaints about Vista was its speed --- even with Aero Glass turned off, users said it was sluggish. That's not the case with the Windows 7 beta; it's quite speedy

You'll want Aero Peek

Aero Peek is a nice addition to Aero that lets you "peek" behind any open window to your desktop. It's far better than Show Desktop icon that lived on the Quick Launch bar in previous versions of Windows. Aero Peek lives as a small, rectangular area just to the right of the clock at the right edge of the task bar. When you have windows open and you mouse over the Aero Peek rectangle, all of your open windows disappear, and you see through to your desktop.

The new taskbar is nifty

The Windows 7 taskbar (see it in action, below) is somewhat like the Mac OS X Dock --- after all, why not steal what's worth stealing? It does double-duty as an application launcher and windows manager. So if you have Internet Explorer open to three Web sites, for example, when you hover your mouse over its stacked icon, hover your mouse over the stacked icon, and you'll see all three open tabs as thumbnails just across the top of the task bar. Hover your mouse over any of the thumbnails, and your entire desktop is taken up by that open window.

Windows 7 simplifies how you work with the windows on your desktop. You'll have more intuitive ways to open, close, resize, and arrange them. You can drag open windows to screen borders, so you'll no longer have to click on tiny objects in the corner of a window to make it do what you want.
Maximize a window by dragging its border to the top of the screen, and return the window to its original size by dragging it away from the top of the screen. Drag the bottom border of a window to expand it vertically.
It's easy to copy files or compare the contents of two windows by dragging the windows to opposite sides of the screen. As your cursor touches the edge, the window will resize to fill that half of the screen.

Jump Lists:

Plus, if there are other files you want to keep handy, you can just pin them to the Jump List.

Improved taskbar and full-screen previews:

The taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to switch between the applications you've got open. In Windows 7 you can set the order in which the icons appear and they'll stay put. To recover shift+delete files..(free software)

So you've lost an important file. Don't panic. Take a breath, and let's see if we can find it. Before you go into full-on file recovery mode, make sure you double-check the folder you had saved it in and the Recycle Bin or Trash. Still nothing?

When your operating system deletes a file, all it really does is mark the space on your hard drive that your file occupies as free space. It's still there, but your computer is now perfectly happy to write new data on top of it—at which point the file recovery process becomes a lot more difficult.

Find the Right File Recovery Program

Windows: You've a lot of really great freeware options for file recovery if you're running Windows. Notable apps includeUndelete Plus (original post), PC Inspector File Recovery (original post), and Restoration (original post). Undelete Plus is the most user-friendly option of the bunch, with advanced filtering options that make it easy to find your needle of a file among the haystack of deleted garbage, but in tests found both Restoration and PC Inspector File Recovery to be more effective at recovering files. (Of course, your mileage may vary.) As an added bonus, the bare bones Restoration is portable, which makes it an excellent addition to your thumb drive.

Mac: If you're on a Mac and aren't afraid to lay down a few bucks in the name of data recovery, the $99 Data Rescue II is the go-to application for file recovery with a friendly graphical interface.

All Platforms: If you're not afraid to crack open a terminal window or command prompt, the free, cross-platform command-line tool PhotoRec(original post) is a crack shot at recovering photos (as the name implies) as well as virtually any other file type from your removable media or hard drives.

Don't Let This Happen Again

Federated Search in WINDOW 7

Federated Search, despite its wonky name, is a seriously cool feature of Windows 7. Download a few "connectors" and you can search Flickr photos, YouTube videos, and other web results straight from your desktop.

It's a natural extension of Vista's save-and-tag search functions, which could also be extended to grab parts of the web with somework-arounds. In Windows 7, however, adding a web site or database to your searching powersis simply a matter of installing aconnector file—with a .osdx extension—by double-clicking it. Let's take a look at some of the cooler connectors already available for Windows 7 beta users.

Flickr Search Connectr:

Long Zheng's connector is a great hack on many fronts. From the download page, you can custom-roll a Flickr search connector by having it check everyone's photos on the sharing site or just one user's, and pre-set how they'll be sorted (interesting, relevant, date posted, or date taken, ascending or descending). What's ridiculously cool, though, is that the photos returned are basically there for you in Windows. Drag one onto your desktop, and you get the full-size download. Right-click a photo to set it as your wallpaper, edit it, copy it, anything you can do with normal photos.

Once you enter your first search, click the Preview Pane button in the upper-right (right next to the help button) to have each photo's Flickr page open in a right-hand pane. Definitely worth the download.

YouTube:

You'll want to change your folder view to large icons for this one, and close the Preview Pane if you've got it open, because,unfortunately/obviously, Windows Explorer doesn't load Flash natively. You can't grab the videos directly (how cool would that hack be?), but your details pane at the window bottom will give you direct links, a summary, and author name. The most helpful use, it seems, would be to keep multiple, slightly varied YouTube searches open on one desktop.

Yahoo, MSN, Google News, Google Blogs:

All these connectors work in the same way, with results in one pane, a preview in another, and basic results information in the details. They're a nice and quick way of gunning through web pages, and dragging the result icons quickly creates web links.

Windows 7 boasts a lot of great new shortcuts, but focusing on few...

Windows 7 Shortcuts supports the following keyboard shortcuts:

Included:

Win+Home: Clear all but the active window
Win+Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop
Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window
Win+Down arrow: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it's maximized
Win+Left/Right arrows: Dock the window to each side of the monitor (If you've got dual monitors, adding Shift to the mix (e.g., Win+Shift+Right arrow) will move the window to the adjacent monitor.)
Win+T: Focus and scroll through items on the taskbar.
Win+P: Adjust presentation settings for your display

Remove LINUX from PC

First of all you need to know where your Linux OS is installed to. that is what drive it is currently living on. Bear in mind that Linux formats the drive as HFS rather than Fat/Fat32 or NTFS. ( These are the file systems used by various Operating Systems).

So HFS Partitions are not seen by windows, so its hidden.

1.To remove the partitions of Linux in WindowsXP go to your 'Control panel' > Admistrative Tools > Computer Managment

2.Open 'Disk Management' and you will see your Linux drives recognised as 'Unknown Partition' plus the status of the drive. Bearing in mind you know what partition and disk you installed to it will be easier to recognise as the drive/partition where you had installed it to.

3.Once you have identifed the drives, 'right-Click' on the drive/partiton and select 'Delete Logical Drive'

Once you have followed this through, you will now have free space.

4.This next part is very important. Once you have formatted the drive, re format it as your required file system type. either Fat32 or NTFS. Now the important part is coming up !

5.Fixing your Master Boot Record to make Windows Bootable again.

6.Have a Windows Boot disk with all the basic DOS Commands loaded on to the disk. A standard Windows 98/Me Boot Disk will work too.

7.Type in the DOS command :

e.g, from your C:\fdisk /mbr

Or use your Windows XP run the recovery console, pick which xp install you would like to boot in to (usually you will pick #1)

8.then type: fixmbr. Answer Y to the dialoge.

Your master boot record will now be restored and Windows XP will be bootable once again. Your System will be restored with your original boot loader that you got with Windows XP.

Google as PROXY...

How to use Google as proxy
Many jobs and schools (countries?) block access to certain sites. However, it is very difficult for anybody to block access to google. By using google with either of these two methods, you can gain access to blocked sites very easily.
Blocked web site, huh? Need a proxy?

Here is an uncommon way for bypassing blocked sites using google.
1:The first and most common way of using google to bypass blocked sites is just to search for the site and then clicked the "cached" link that appears on google. Easy, simple, and frequently works for static information.

2:Passing the site through google translator works well as well. Here's the URL to use:

http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.blockedsite.com
(where blocked site.com is the site that you wish to visit)

This translates the site from English to English and works because the IP address will appear as google instead of you. Here's a link to tech-recipes passed through the translator as an example. You can actually do this with any langpair. Change en|en in the URL above to Spanish by using es|es and it still works.

3:. Google mobile will "convert as you go" very similar to the translation method above.
Just search for your site with google mobile and click on the link it provides. Here's is tech-recipes brought up through google mobile search. Once again, this will allow you to bypass any blocks because the IP request comes from google not for you.
Like the translation method above, google will continue to "proxy" as you continue to visit links through the site.
