The camerawork on this New Wave classic is as ecstatic and giddying as falling in love itself. Truffaut moves between comedy and tragedy with awesome ease.

6 It Happened One Night

Famously causing a drop in vest sales when Clark Gable revealed a bare chest, this Frank Capra comedy is one of only three films to take the top four Oscars – for best film, direction and acting. It combines a magical innocence of tone with a risqué plot as married rich girl Ellie (Claudette Colbert), on the run from a disapproving father, hooks up with Gable's resourceful journalist Peter on the night bus to New York. As they cross the country, sleeping in motels and haystacks, contempt becomes love, and the walls of Jericho – the sheet on a rope that has divided their beds – come tumbling down.
When Ellie, tear-stained and wide-eyed, appears from behind the sheet to declare: "Take me with you, Peter. I can't let you go out of my life now. I cannot live without you."

7 The Philadelphia Story

Never has class war seemed more elegant and, well, classy, than in George Cukor's version of Philip Barry's comedy. Everything about it is so darned stylish that it could end up as brittle as its heiress heroine (Katharine Hepburn at her most luminous). Its great heart springs from that fact she learns to love the right man (ex-husband Cary Grant) by kissing the wrong one, James Stewart's love-struck journalist.
"Put me in your pocket, Mike," Hepburn's husky just-kissed request to Stewart as he sweeps her into the darkness.

8 Solaris

2002
Steven Soderbergh's sombre meditation on love and loss has an almost unbearable intensity: although set largely in the vastness of space, it is one of the most emotionally claustrophobic films ever. George Clooney plays Kelvin, a shrink sent to a distant space station after the planet it orbits starts to play terrifying games with the minds of the crew. Kelvin discovers he is not immune when his dead wife materialises beside him in bed.
At the deeply ambiguous conclusion, Kelvin asks bewilderedly, "Am I alive or dead?", to which his wife replies: "We don't have to think like that any more."

9 Roman Holiday

1953
From the moment we see Audrey Hepburn toying with her shoes under her voluminous dress, we know she's bored with the regal lifestyle. Naturally, only one profession could provide someone dashing enough for her: journalism. And so it's into the arms of US hack abroad Gregory Peck that she falls, while William Wyler directs this sublime couple with infinite charm.
Peck pretends that his hand has been bitten off by the ancient stone face, without having warned Hepburn that he was going to do this. Her initial panic, and the way they hold and gaze at each other afterwards, radiate pure, unscripted affection.

10 Love Story

1970
Cancer and ice-hockey: not, on paper, a recipe for romance. But throw in Ali McGraw, a lush Oscar-winning score and some chunky early-1970s woollens and – hey, presto – it's the highest-grossing film of the year. "What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died?" asks sportif rich boy Ryan O'Neil in the opening line. Plenty, of course, most of it schmaltzy, but irresistible. Meanwhile, poor-girl McGraw succumbs to terminal illness while remaining delicious and coining the phrase "Love means never having to say you're sorry." But it's the music that nails you.

11 An Officer and a Gentleman

1982
He's an officer. He's a gentleman. And, let's not forget, he's a lovva. John Travolta turned down the role of the ne'er-do-well trainee fighter pilot redeemed by Debra Winger, and good thing too. He lacks the hardness that we have to see the character shedding, wouldn't have cut such a dash as Richard Gere in his white outfit, and would have been effortlessly outshone in the looks department by his smouldering belle.
Winger is in her dismal factory; Gere, in full dress uniform, strides in and sweeps her off her feet. The definitive romantic image.

12 Gone with the Wind

1939
With the American Civil War as an expansive backdrop, and enough famous set-pieces to win eight Oscars, this epic is still a simple love story at heart, though arguably it is more about the power of sex than the mysteries of love. Vivien Leigh's petulant Scarlett O'Hara is a terrible pain, but Clark Gable's Rhett Butler is besotted, witty and wise enough to make his kicking down of the bedroom door an act of passion rather than brutality.
Rhett to Scarlett as they kiss and she says she will faint: "I want you to faint. This is what you were meant for."

13 In the Mood for Love

2000
Like so many great romances, Wong Kar-Wai's modern Hong Kong masterpiece is about the impossibility of a romance. It overflows with sensuality and passion, but the man and woman at its heart (Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung) never consummate their love. They're both married, and are drawn together only when they discover that their partners are having an affair with each other. Soundtracked by the aching cries of cellos in the night, drenched in super-saturated tones, this is the ultimate in desire and frustration.

14 Sunrise

1927
Many silent classics tend to be admired from a reverential distance, but not FW Murnau's Sunrise: it's impossible not to respond to it like something that only came out yesterday. Led astray by a lascivious "woman from the city", George O'Brien plots to kill his unsuspecting wife (the luminous Janet Gaynor), only to see the light in a series of reconciliation scenes as tender as they are uplifting. Better still, it's on current release nationwide in a lovingly restored print.
O'Brien and Gaynor go to a photographer's studio and act like giggling newlyweds all over again.

15 Dirty Dancing

1987
A generation of teenage girls were obsessed with this Emile Ardolino film. It's the ultimate female adolescent romance: smart-but-plain daddy's girl (Jennifer Grey's "Baby") has sexual – and rhythmic – awakening with chiselled holiday resort dance teacher (Patrick Swayze's Johnny). It's 1963 and, away from the family activities, Baby is mesmerised by a below stairs world where the staff bump, grind and lose themselves in sensuous R&B rhythms. Baby saves Johnny from a lack of self-worth. He saves her from the foxtrot.
"Nobody puts Baby in the corner," says Johnny, and leads her on stage for the dance of her life.

16 An Affair to Remember

1957
This is the film that Meg Ryan keeps talking about in Sleepless in Seattle. Cary Grant is a carefree playboy who falls in love with Deborah Kerr, a nightclub singer engaged to a wealthy businessman, and vows to meet her six months later at the top of the Empire State Building. Shot in lush Cinemascope, it looks great and features some of the most romantic lines ever written. Sighs Kerr: "Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories." Grant was rarely this sad or soulful again.
Kerr tells Grant, "I was looking up. It was the nearest thing to heaven. You were there."

17 The Way We Were

1973
It's a case of opposites attract when impoverished communist student Katie (Barbra Streisand) falls for rich jock Hubbell (Robert Redford at his most gorgeous). He, however, hardly knows she exists until a chance meeting years later. They fall in love and for a brief, honeymoon period life is filled with long walks on the beach, before their different views drive them apart. All they're left with are "misty water-coloured memories of the way we were".
Hubbell turns up drunk to Katie's romantic meal and falls asleep. But he does so beautifully.

18 La Belle et la Bete

1946
The film may be based on the classic fairytale, but Cocteau transforms it into a heartstopping examination of what is meant by sexual and romantic love. Jean Marais as the Beast is a real animal – clawing at Belle's door at night and drinking the blood of his prey. Josette Day's delicate heroine is terrified and disgusted by this high-testosterone monster, but comes to love the Beast's gentle, self-sacrificing soul. Deeply Freudian, but oh so moving.
Belle offers the Beast some water in her hands and he laps it like a cat.

19 Laura

1944
Unusually for a romance, the heroine is dead when the hero falls in love with her. Laura (Gene Tierney) has been murdered and tough cop Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) is interviewing two of the men who loved her. He becomes smitten by the sweetness they describe and also by the portrait above her fireplace. Then she comes back from the dead. Part-thriller, part-romance, with plenty of sharp humour thrown in, Otto Preminger's film is near-perfect.
It's late at night and McPherson has fallen asleep drunk in front of Laura's portrait. A key turns in the lock and in walks a woman. It is Laura. "You're alive!"

20 Punch-Drunk Love

2002
Teetering on the brink of terminal depression, Paul Thomas Anderson's beautiful pipe dream of a modern romantic comedy turns the genre on its head with a mixture of skewed invention and giddy sincerity. Trust the smartest talent in contemporary American cinema to find gainful employment for its most gormless clown - Adam Sandler - whose small-time entrepreneur Barry Egan is a vulnerable and touching creation; Emily Watson glows from within as his expectant sweetheart.
Sandler races through the corridors of Watson's apartment block, rings her doorbell, and they kiss as the music soars.

21 True Romance

1993
It took Quentin Tarantino five years to find backing and a director (Tony Scott) for his first, most personal, script. An update of Badlands, Tarantino admits it is also the romantic fantasy of a single 25-year-old "movie geek". Thus, Patricia Arquette's endearingly ditzy trailer-trash blonde (Alabama) shares a love of kung-fu movies and Elvis with Clarence (Christian Slater). As their cocaine deal-of-a-lifetime goes wrong, the film bursts into a symphony of violence, and we root for this "real cute couple" to make it out alive.
Alabama purrs: "I feel real goofy saying this, me being a call girl and all, but I think I love you."

22 Now, Voyager

1942
This film directed by the British-born Irving Rapper gets stranger and more compelling as the years go by. Bette Davis plays a dowdy spinstress who is transformed from ugly duckling into a swan after a nervous breakdown. On an ocean cruise she falls for unhappily married Paul Henreid and ends up looking after his troubled daughter. As for marriage, she tells him: "Don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." Romance doesn't always have fairytale endings, then, but Davis's transformation is gripping to behold.
When Henreid lights up two cigarettes, then hands one to Davis.

23 When Harry Met Sally

1989
"We could never be friends," announces Harry smugly. "Men and women can never be friends because the sex part always gets in the way." Sally – a fresh, fluffy, all-American ditz – disagrees; 11 years and several regrettable hair-dos later, they're still arguing the point. Nora Ephron's script, zinging with one-liners and verbal sparring, crystallises an imperishable core issue in the war between the sexes; Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal update Hepburn and Tracy in style.
The climactic new year's eve party where Sally wails: "Harry, you say things that make it impossible for me to hate you, and I hate you, Harry, I really hate you."

24 Titanic

James Cameron's $200 million account of the world's worst shipping disaster is also a classic tale of doomed love across the social divide. On an ocean liner bound for the States, a bored young English aristocrat (Rose, played by a ravishing Kate Winslet) discovers her soulmate in Jack, a penniless Irish charmer (Leonardo DiCaprio). But it's not just the class system that's against them – a 500,000-ton iceberg strikes a hole in the ship, and their passionate affair is sunk.
"Promise me you'll survive," stammers the near-dead Jack as they float in the freezing North Atlantic. Rose clutches his hand: "I'll never let go, Jack, I'll never let go."

Sofia Coppola's postmodern Brief Encounter is full of unspoken, low-key longing and tentative open spaces, proving that in romance, less is often more. It brings Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson together by chance as guests in a Tokyo hotel. Cut adrift from their normal lives and partners, they shyly, slowly come to recognise each other as kindred spirits. Darting through neon streets, holding hands, singing karaoke – nothing happens, but everything happens. It's wonderful. If you haven't seen it yet, go tonight.

26 Une Partie de Campagne

In Renoir's miniature masterpiece (it's only 39 minutes long), Henriette, a fresh and lovely Parisienne, takes a day trip to the country one sunny summer's day with Mum, Dad, Gran and idiot husband-to-be Anatole. She is utterly intoxicated by the gorgeousness of nature and, separated from her family, falls into the arms of young Henri, a handsome, poetic-looking sort. After a brief moment of passion in the long grass, the clouds burst; she heads back to humdrum domesticity with Anatole.
Henriette's resistance to Henri's advances crumbles and her eyes fill with tears when she hears a nightingale warbling in the tree above them.

27 I Know where I'm Going

This black-and-white gem from Powell and Pressburger is almost as much an ode to the Western Isles as it is a tale of romance. Joan Webster (Wendy Hillier) is all set to marry a wealthy man, but bad weather prevents her from getting to the wedding. While she's stranded, she meets Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), a naval officer and the laird of Kiloran. She is sucked into the otherworldliness of the Scottish islands, complete with superstitions, curses, ceilidhs and whirlpools.
She's leaving to marry her rich man. "Will you do something for me before I go away?" she asks. "I want you to kiss me."

28 Breakfast at Tiffany's

1961
Purists maintain that the cinematic version of Truman Capote's novel is a bowdlerised travesty. Few, these days, read Breakfast at Tiffany's, but we keep watching the film. It transformed a slight, amoral tale into a poignant love story where two lost souls, Audrey Hepburn's high-class call girl Holly Golightly, and George Peppard's failed writer, find each other in high-chic bohemian New York. Forty years later, every girl still wants to be an Audrey-style Cinderella walking down Fifth Avenue in a Givenchy dress.

The prototypical warped love story, and, for many, the first modern American movie, this constantly and effortlessly juggles tragedy and comedy, while a cloud of dread at the inevitable outcome hangs over the proceedings. For us not to dismiss them as repugnant killers, the central duo needed to be very beautiful and genuinely touching - and we could have asked for no more than Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
Having just killed his first man, Clyde selflessly suggests to Bonnie that she leave him, adding: "You ain't gonna have a minute's peace!" Her trembling reply is: "You promise?"

Woody Allen's funniest, saddest, finest film, about the life and one true love of Manhattan stand-up Alvy Singer, is almost unbearably heartbroken, a lament for chances missed as well as a fond flashback to better times. 8. Gather friends and family outside his/her home waving banners with the words will you marry me on them and you standing in front of them all on one knee holding the ring. (Make sure that they get the right house).

10. Create a web page all about your life together. Photos, places that mean a lot to you both. Send him/her the web address and wait for his/her reply and when accepted you can then send the address to friends and family.

11. Wrap a large box and fill with smaller boxes all wrapped the last box that she will come to will be the smallest with the ring inside. Or alternatively wrap a large box and fill with those tiny foam pieces and let her look for the small box inside.

12. Cut the bottom out of a very large box then wrap it. Take it to her place of work and ask one of her colleague's to go get her telling her that there is a large parcel for her. Meanwhile you climb in from the bottom and when she unwraps it jump out with the ring in hand and ask her to make an honest man of you.

13. Take her/him away for the weekend and when you are on your last day pop the question.

We can all think of typical ways of asking our lovely girlfriends to marry us. The man gets down on one knee and gets out a box with an engagement ring (probably worth a month's salary) before asking her to spend the rest of her life by his side.

This traditional way of proposing still works, and can be categorized as the conventional way of asking a woman to marry you. But these days, women want to be mesmerized with emotion, romanticism and originality. And not necessarily in that order either.

The following are a mix of both innovative and more traditional ways to pop the question.

1. To the extreme
If your woman is the sporty type, you can propose to her from the heights of a mountain after a day of rock climbing. Other possibilities would be during a parachute jump or a scuba-diving session in South America, or anywhere else for that matter.

2. Make a video
Making a personal video of yourself proposing to her can have a great effect, especially if you are watching it with her. She will likely jump from joy and want to skip straight to the honeymoon...

3. In mid-air
A more public display of affection is to have the captain of an airplane you are on recite your marriageproposal to your woman over the intercom. You can just picture it: "We are now flying over the Grand Canyon and will be arriving at our destination in approximately 45 minutes. And, by the way, Joanna, Michael would like to know if you would do him the honor of marrying him."

There are many different ways to propose marriage. Over the years, I've come across five basic styles of proposals. Which one of these styles best describes your situation?

Wow! This one makes no sense to me unless:

- It's her fifth marriage, your seventh.

It's Now or Never. Way to go-you've waited so long she's resorting to threats: "We're getting married or I'll find someone who'll appreciate me!" Fish or cut bait, guy. If you love her, get off the fence and show her you can't live without her. If it's come to the threatening stage, you have to be extra, extra romantic to make up for her long wait. In your married life there comes a stage when couples hardly feel romantic and convey their inner feelings to one another. No matter how strong your relationship is it is very important to keep the marriage alive and exciting, that you have to feel more caring and loving towards your partner and express yourself through words. Over time, not only do we forget to give our partners small gifts of affection, but sometimes, we forget to say how we feel. You need to tell your partner how important he/she is for you. We need to let our spouse know that we not only appreciate them, but we need them to be with us in our life and life without them is incomplete. Make it more romantic by sending them an e-mail describing how impossible it is to live without them or write them a note and slip it into their briefcase, lunch box or purse. Just like women need to hear they are still attractive, men particularly need to know their wives depend on them..

Make it a point to thank your spouse for every nice thing that he does. Why do we thank the cashier at the super-market or the librarian or the liftman or our friends and never thank our partner. The wedding is over, the presents have been put away and thank you notes written – now what? Once the excitement of the festivities and the romantic honeymoon is over, the real work of marriage begins. And yes, it can sometimes be work no matter how much you love each other!

I've gathered some tips to help you keep things on track as you step into the “real world” of married life. Some are serious, some light-hearted, but all can help you remember exactly why you got married in the first place and what it is you love so much about your mate.

1. Money is one of the most frequent causes of marital friction. If you haven’t talked about it before the wedding, talk about it now. The sooner you establish a spending plan and agree on it, the more arguments you’ll avoid down the line.

2. Don’t assume all things have to be 50/50%. If you prefer balancing the checkbook and paying bills, but your spouse hates this and would rather be in charge of cleaning and scheduling appointments, that’s fine! It’s what works for you that is important.

3. Always be willing to say, “I’m sorry,” mean it. Whether it’s something small like not putting the cap on the toothpaste or something larger, the apology is more important than the incident and will be remembered far longer.

4. Never make life decisions unilaterally. Even if the new car will be used by you, your spouse’s input should be listened to and considered. Set a limit (say, $100 / £50 or $500 / £250) and agree that neither of you will spend over that amount without consulting the other.

5. Allow yourself a sense of wonder in the little things and share them. Do you see a beautiful sunset while doing the dishes? Point it out to your spouse and share that brief moment of beauty.

6. Make conscious sacrifices. Let your “better half” choose the movie, the television show or the restaurant rather than always wanting to do it. Enjoy his or her pleasure.

(This is my wife, Nancy. She’s been doing a great job recently working on the school play as a fundraiser.) Devise a “signal” so that when you do part, she can let you know if she needs rescuing.

10. Surprises are good. It can be as small as a note in your spouse’s briefcase, an unexpected flower or making his favorite dessert.

11. Maintain your sense of humor!! If you can laugh when things get tough, you’ll be able to get through almost any crisis – remember to look for the absurd in any situation.

12. Never discuss important decisions when you’re angry. If the disagreement has reached the point of shouting or angry words, agree to table the discussion until you’ve both cooled off. Set a time and date to reopen the topic.

13. Pick your battles! If it isn’t all that important to you in the long run but your spouse sees it as a big issue – concede. By letting your spouse win on some issues that are dear to his or her heart, you are validating their feelings and letting them know they are more important than winning a fight. Don’t win the battle only to lose the war.

14. Keep things in perspective. Will this issue matter a week from now? If not, it’s probably not worth an argument or disagreement. If it’s only an annoyance, consider letting it slide – after all, you’re annoying sometimes, too!

15. Celebrate little occasions. Most couples will go out for dinner and celebrate a promotion or anniversary, but those can be few. Instead, make a pledge to celebrate events like finishing a project on time at work or the day you finish your last “thank you” note. By making small moments special, you’ll make the days an adventure.

16. Find one activity you both enjoy, whether it’s going to baseball games, golfing or watching classic movies, and make it a point to do it regularly together. A shared activity can give rise to many special moments and creates a common bond for conversation and something to look forward to together.

When out with friends, although you shouldn’t have to, give a quick “just checking in,” call. It costs you nothing and will show you are considerate and thinking of them.

20. Don’t spoil your partner’s fun just because you can’t join in. A survey found that, especially at the holidays, married couples argued frequently over invitations to events. If you can’t meet her for your office Christmas party, that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t go and have a great time without you. Just because you don’t want to attend the annual fundraiser that he loves, don’t expect him to stay home with you and forego the function.

21. Think before speaking. It sounds simple, but snapping out every critical thought that pops into your head is easy when you become comfortable with your mate. If your husband temporarily turns into a loud, boisterous buffoon with his brothers or your wife suddenly starts talking about nothing but the details of the latest family scandal, don’t panic. They will return to their normal selves as soon as the family event is over – this is a bonding ritual for them.

25. Put annoying habits into perspective. He bites his nails? She twiddles her hair? These will be the same habits you’ll miss when he or she is gone, so accept them and forget it.

26. When arguing, stick to the topic at hand. Remember, if you disagree about something, you should address their point of view, not them personally. Don’t use insults or insinuate that your partner is somehow “stupid” or bad just because they disagree with you.

27. Have one hobby each that is separate from your partner and enjoy it regularly. Maintaining separate interests means you won’t rely completely on your spouse for entertainment, which can be draining and a real burden.

28. Support your spouse’s outside interests whole-heartedly. Ask questions about their hobbies, volunteer work and other activities. Showing an interest in all aspects of their life apart from you will not only show you care, but give you the chance to learn more about your spouse as the years go by.

29. Allow decompression time at the end of the day. Whoever is home first shouldn’t wait at the door to jump their spouse with a list of chores or a bunch of questions. Give him or her a half-hour to simply unwind from the stresses of the day.

30. Ask, ask, ask!! Trying to guess what is on your spouse’s mind is a recipe for disaster. Ask specific questions and listen carefully to the answers.

31. Answer all questions, and be specific. If your husband asks you what you want for your birthday – tell him! Don’t expect him to “know” that you’d like to go to the theater. Tell him you want to go and mention the show you want to see by name.

32. Continue to date. After a few months or years of marriage you can easily get into a routine that doesn’t include special evenings out of the house and away from bills, leaky faucets and other concerns. Make sure you go out and pretend you’re still dating – dress up, put on perfume, woo each other.

33. Tell your spouse you love him or her every day. You can never say it too much and it will give them a safe, secure feeling knowing your love is something they can rely on.

34. Remember to compliment, and often. You may think it’s obvious that if you married her, she must know how attractive you find her – not true! One compliment makes up for ten put-downs.

35. Never interrupt your spouse in front of others.

36. Plan well ahead for the holidays and any other time when a conflict may come up about sharing family time, then present a united front. Don’t say, “Robert wants to spend Christmas day with his folks, so we’ll see you the night before.” Instead say, “We’ve decided we’ll go to Robert’s parents Christmas day, but we’ll be over all day on Christmas Eve.”

37. Don’t correct your spouse in front of others over little things in front of others (the details of a story, what day you went to the theater). Details are unimportant, and you run the risk of treating him or her like a child when you spend your time correcting him.

38. Money matters! Be honest and set guidelines as soon as possible. Discuss spending limits for both spouses and what the limit is for big-ticket purchases you can make without consulting the other.

39. Have a separate checking account for each individual for personal purchases that isn’t accountable to the other person and decide how much each will contribute to the joint account if both of you work. If only one works, be sure to have an account for that person as well that is only for their use.

40. Don’t spring big changes or surprises on your spouse. If you’re thinking of leaving your job, going back to school or anything else that will affect you both, discuss it before making any decisions. Yes, it’s your life – but you’re in a partnership now!

41. Plan for sex. This sounds terribly unromantic, but if you’re both busy people it can ensure that you don’t let your sexual life fall by the wayside. And if you know that every Thursday evening is “the night,” it can become a powerful aphrodisiac just looking forward to it all day.

Become a good observer

The only reason some guy is scoring big with women and you're not, is that he knows something you don't know..
When you're out in the world notice how women act.

At a restaurant, a coffee shop or department store. Observe and make mental notes. If you're looking for a woman, in a bar, a club, a social event or wherever, observe how women act.

If she's with a man watch what she does:
Is she touching him?

When she's talking to a man is he doing most of the talking-or is she?
Is she leaning toward him or away?

Opening Lines
In my last tip I sent you out to meet women.

How did you do?

Did one thing work better than something else?

Well if you found an 'opening line' that worked more than once, you should use it again.

But be aware, there is no perfect opening line that will work–without fail, time and time again.

There are many variables to consider including time, location, her mood, her receptivity, your attitude, your demeanor, and numerous other factors you will discover here at BetterDatesNow.com in the future.

For now, let's examine some opening lines.

But first, let's set the scene.

If there's a big crowd and she's with a lot of people and it's very noisy it's a bad place to meet and introduce yourself.

Why?

She probably can't hear you well and you can't hear her. But that's a problem because most guys try to meet women at a club, filled with noise, dancing and drunks.

It's probably the worst place to meet a woman because that's what every other guy is there to do. You're just one in a million. You're just like every other guy on the prowl looking for chicks. Although, I have had some successful encounters in that very atmosphere using a technique I perfected. More about that later.

A better strategy is to meet women where there aren't a lot of guys trying to meet women.

For example, the post office, the library, a museum, a wedding, a funeral, the market, the gas station, a department store, the park, the beach, the subway, a restaurant, even on a busy street in the middle of Manhattan.

Now each of those locations requires a variation on some opening lines.

But none of them requires changing the best opener of all; "Hi."

If you deliver a "Hi" with a smile like you're recognizing an old friend you haven't seen in months it can work wonders.

Seems too simple but it's true. Because if you deliver the line like that, she is likely to think she already knows you and can't recall who you are.

If you come off as friendly, non-threatening and sincerely glad to see her (like an old friend) she will be receptive.

If she is, and responds to you with a friendly "Hi" or "Hello," you now have the ball in your court.

It can be a virtual tennis match for the first few sentences. Your job is to win the match.

As long as she keeps hitting the ball back to your court, you're in the game.

If she doesn't return the ball, the game is over for this player, find another.

Here's a scenario:
You're pumping gas and at a nearby pump is an attractive woman you want to meet.

It's Wednesday, she's not wearing a wedding ring so you begin.

You: "Hi"

Her: "Hello"

You: "How's your Tuesday going?"

Her: "It's Wednesday."

You: (Realizing your mistake, you say) "So it is. So how DID your Tuesday go?" (you're smiling here)

Her: (Any answer) Good, not good, I don't remember, great…whatever she says you respond the same.

You: "So is your Wednesday going better?"

At this point-if you're smiling and/or being pleasant, she sees you as lighthearted and most women like guys who are lighthearted and who might just be fun to be with.

So now we're at a critical point– with the ball in her court.

If she says something here, or anytime before this point, that moved the conversation forward, you're doing well.

If she doesn't you're done.

Let's say she answers with "It's going ok, how about you?" You're in luck, she's interested.

More opening lines that have worked well for me:
"May I ask you a question?" If she says "yes", you ask a very obscure question like, "Do you think a full moon affects the way people act?" This launches a conversation.

"Is it me or does the time seem to be going by faster this year?" Also a conversation starter.

"I'm considering moving. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?" (follow up with ‘why?')

"Who do you think are happier, married people or single people?" (follow up with ‘why?')

With the above opening lines you're opening the door for a conversation. As she talks, you listen, and ask questions. You become interested in her. And as a result, she becomes more interested in you, because you listen. It's as simple as that.

Very Bad opening lines:

Do you come here often?
What sign are you?
Are you here for the beauty contest? (might work if she's intoxicated)
May I buy you a drink?

My favorite and most successful opening line: "Hi."

If a conversation is started, you interrupt yourself, extend your hand and introduce yourself.

Something like this: "I'm sorry, I didn't even introduce myself. My name is Matt."

The way she responds to your extended hand and the chance to tell you her name will reveal a lot.

Note: For reasons of simplicity, the term 'answering machines' is intended to also include voice-mail, pagers, and other electronic communication devices designed to give or take messages.

Asking 30 women for their private phone numbers will get you ten numbers, and those ten will result in only three dates with women who have high Interest in you.

The other seven who gave you their private number have low Interest Level. For them, the answering machine or voice mail is a great weapon.

For a woman, voice mail does her dirty work while a man thinks of it as a convenience.

Talk to the Woman, not her Machine

When you leave a message, you're not in control, you are putting HER in control. You're trying to find your way in the dark.

Did she actually get the message? After all, we've all erased messages accidentally. Did her machine run out of tape? Does she check her voice mail often? If she did get the message, when did she get it?

These are all unknowns and because they are, you are not in Control. Most importantly, you cannot judge her level of interest if you cannot talk to her. So what should you do?

One of the most common complaints of women is about guys who call, and call, and keep calling and leaving messages. "Don't they get it? Don't they understand I don't want to go out with them?" is the comment most often heard from these women. When asked, why they gave their number out in the first place, overwhelmingly, the response was "I couldn't say no to his face when he asked me for my number."

So what these women did, and continue to do, is use their answering machine as a buffer. It's a mechanical–or electronic–excuse for not talking to a guy they didn't have high Interest Level in anyway.

Sorry to say, most guys don't have a clue about how this works. But every woman does.

So what is the solution? How do we interpret and handle her use of the answering device.

First, after you get the number, I always recommend waiting 4-9 days before calling.

In a future tip I'll explain how I completely blew it with a FANTASTIC woman, because I called her too soon.

Identifying a "Screener"

You got her private phone number, waited 5-9 days, and started calling.

You called at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm and got her voicemail every time. You did this on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with the same results, her voicemail.

Either she is out of town, deceased, or you've got a control freak on your hands, a "screener" who may never answer her phone.

We ask, "Why does she hand out her private phone number if she's not going to answer her phone?"

In the case of the screener, she's there, listening to the messages, getting the calls, and she enjoys the screening process. She's in control and you don't know where you stand.

So you've called Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, four times each evening. That's 12 calls, and you got voicemail or her answering machine every time. Assuming she isn't out of town and you have NOT left a message until now, here's what to do.

The following Monday, leave your name and phone number and no message. DO NOT tell her you've been trying to reach her all week. DO NOT tell her you've called 12 times. DO NOT leave anything on her answering machine or voicemail but your name and telephone number. Then, forget about her.

It's a good bet that she will NEVER call you. In cases like this, perhaps one in ten will call back, and usually with a question like "Who are you and where did we meet?" If that's not a sign of low Interest Level, what is?

Today, thanks to 'Caller I-D,' the person you're calling knows your number. And many answering devices will indicate a call from your phone, even though you don't leave a message.

After calling her once, before calling her again, it's a good idea to disable the caller I-D feature.

Check with your phone provider to find out how to disable it. The method may vary between phone systems so you should contact the phone company in your area to determine how to do this. If she has 'call blocking', allowing only identified phone numbers to get through, you will have to use a public telephone or your work phone to call or she will see your repeated and desperate attempts to reach her. And she will know you are definitely not a Challenge

What not to do in the first 60 days..

During the first 60 days of a new relationship, if you have a date to go somewhere or are supposed to meet somewhere at a certain time and she says "Just leave a message with the time and/or place and I'll be there", don't depend on it. Similarly, if she offers to leave the pertinent info on your voicemail, don't depend on that.

During the critical 60-day period it is very important to run a tight ship.

Talk to each other, not each other's answering machines, voicemail, text messaging, or pagers. Otherwise you will not be able to gauge her true Interest Level. You have to be able to match her actions with her words.

Tell her you prefer to communicate with her, not a communication device. This will set you apart from other guys.

During your early days it is also wise to pick her up, rather than meet her somewhere. If she agrees to that, it's a sign of her high level of interest.

With voice mail or text messages as a "middle-man" she keeps you in the dark.

And because of that, you're likely to hear things like, "I didn't get the message, something must be wrong with my voicemail."

"I didn't understand the directions or the address."

"I heard two beeps and didn't know when to leave the message."

When the woman has low interest in you she will find a million excuses.

The best way to break a bad habit is to not start it in the first place.

During the first 60 days of that new relationship you should talk to the woman, not her voicemail.

DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE!.

Well here is Mats experience.Read it.

"I was looking for women to date. Actually I was looking for the ideal woman, someone I could spend some time with and perhaps even develop a meaningful relationship.

At the time I enjoyed going to art gallery openings. It was a great venue to meet girls. There were finger foods, hors d'oeuvres, wine and/or champagne and sometimes beer, all free. And professional women and women of class liked to attend gallery openings where the work of an artist was on display. So what's not to like?

There were three or four gallery openings every month in the Los Angeles/Beverly Hills area and when I could I would attend. They usually started about 6 P.M. so women would come after work and, like me, enjoy free food and beverages while pretending to be interested in the art on display. It was fun!

I was wandering around a gallery on La Cienega Avenue and spotted a fantastic looking woman with another. I approached and asked something like, "What impresses you most about this artist?"

Now she had no idea who I was. For all she knew I might even be the artist whose work was on display.

She gave me some answer, which led me to another comment. We introduced ourselves-her name was Darcy-and before I knew it we were in a conversation. And I felt, from her body language and attitude Darcy was very comfortable talking with me.

Her girlfriend, seeing we were in a conversation, walked away leaving us to ourselves talking. I suggested I was interrupting her tour of the gallery and she said, "Oh no, I'm enjoying talking with you."

BINGO! She was definitely displaying a high level of interest.

We talked about what we each did, I was in television and she was a musician with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra.

When her girlfriend came back I excused myself saying, "I'll let you two check out some more of the art and maybe I'll see you before you leave."

That was a very good move on my part because I knew she liked me and I removed myself.

Remember, it's not how much I like her that's important. What's MOST important is how much she likes me.

I immediately represented a challenge to her as I walked away.

But I kept watching her from across the gallery out of the corner of my eye. I approached her briefly about 15 minutes later and asked if she'd found a favorite piece of art yet. "Still looking" she replied. I kept moving and kept my eye on her, once seeing that she was also watching me.

When I sensed Darcy and her friend might be getting ready to leave I approached her and said, "Nice meeting you. I'm going to get going. Maybe I'll see you at another opening sometime."

She responded with "Aren't you going to ask for my phone number?"

Do you see what happened? Wow, it was great! I was jumping out of my skin. "Oh sure" I said. "What is your number?"

She replied, "You weren't even going to ask were you?" I said, "Well, I thought you might be involved with someone."

"I'm not, do you have a pen? I'll give you my number."

"I don't have a pen, but I'll remember it."

Now she really thought I wasn't interested and was blowing her off. This was probably very disconcerting because she was a real knockout and probably never experienced a guy talking to her and not hitting on her.

She looked at me with doubt in her eyes. "No really, tell me your number and I will remember it. I promise", I said.

She gave me her number, I repeated it and said goodnight. She said "Call me!"

As I left the gallery I was repeating the number over and over in my head so I wouldn't forget it. I ran to my car, grabbed a pen and wrote it down. I was ecstatic! (by the way, it pays to always carry a pen)

I drove home very excited about calling this beautiful woman who was very interested in me. I had done everything right.

I got home, poured myself a glass of wine and then, estimating how long it would take her to get home, made a HUGE mistake.

I called the beautiful Darcy.

She answered and was very surprised I called saying something like, "I didn't think you would call, certainly not so soon."

I told her I enjoyed talking with her and was looking forward to seeing her again sometime. She said she'd like to know more about me and kept the conversation going.

Well who doesn't like talking about themselves?

But doing that, this early in the game is the worst thing you can do, and I did it.

She asked me a couple of questions; Where are you from? How did you get into your business? Where is your family? Etc.

I started blabbing about me and forgot about asking more about her.

I forgot to let her do most of the talking. I forgot that women love it when you listen to them instead of talking about you.

My ego had me believing my story was sooooo very interesting that she would be dazzled by what she heard. It turned out to be a two-hour phone call and about 90-minutes into it Darcy stopped listening and began telling me what was wrong with me.

She had been listening and analyzing me and everything I said, drawing conclusions that she thought were true.

Now remember, she doesn't know me. We only had small chit-chat at the gallery and then our 90-minute call on the phone where I spilled my guts about stuff that she seemed interested in.

I mean I really blabbed, talking about my childhood, my tough times, my good times, etc., completely removing any mystery about Matt.

By the end of that long phone call, Darcy said "Please don't ever call me again."

What!!??

In a matter of a few short hours I had taken it from "Call me", to "Don't ever call me again".

And I did it all by myself by breaking two very important rules:

1. Wait 4-9 days before calling. (I didn't)

2. When you first meet, use the phone only to make a date, not to get to know someone. (I didn't)

Not only that, I relinquished control and I was no longer a challenge.

I was just some guy who was too eager and too interested in telling her about me. Now I was just like every other guy she ever met, a jerk.

After she gave me her number, and insisting I take it, I completely blew it with the beautiful Darcy. But, I was cool and thought I might be able to save it.

I waited two days and called her, getting her voicemail. I didn't leave a message, but the next day I called again and this time I got her.

I apologized for running off at the mouth the other night and suggested we should get together for a drink sometime. "I don't think so", she said. "It would never work, goodbye."

And that was the last time I spoke to Darcy. Needles to say, I learned a lot that week.

ONLY Her Actions Reflect Her Feelings.

Getting ten home phone numbers will result in only five dates.

The other five will give you the "NO" on the phone they couldn't give you in person.

That "no" on the phone will come in a variety of forms.

We could spend years trying to figure out why she cannot actually say the 'N' word. As a rational person you might even ask yourself, "Why didn't she tell me she had a boyfriend, or was living with a guy, rather than give me her number and then not go out with me?"

Remember this: Only her ACTIONS truly reflect her FEELINGS.

Her words spoke her phone number. Her actions told a different story.
Actions don't just speak louder than words, actions SCREAM the truth at you.

The truth is, women with low Interest are inconsistent.

So she gave you her home phone number, implying she had some interest in you, and now she is telling you something different on the phone.

She's being 'creative' and here are some examples of that creativity:

"I have to get my head together, so I'm moving to Siberia, but I'll send you my address when I get there."
(Notice she doesn't even ask for your address so she can actually send you her Siberian address when she gets there.)
"I don't have time for men right now, but let's talk later."
(Would she be saying that to Brad Pitt or Mel Gibson?)
"I'm busy for the next three weeks, but let's do lunch one day."
(She likes you so much she can't find one hour of free time out of the next 504 hours.)
"I've got a lot going on right now, but let's keep in touch."
(Translation: Don't call me anymore)
"To tell you the truth I'm not really interested in a relationship right now."
(Translation: "I'm not really interested in a relationship-WITH YOU-right now!)
"I am on a long distance call…could I call you back… what's your number?"
(She doesn't even have a pen in her hand)
"Right now is just a bad time, but maybe in the future-who knows?"
(Translation: You definitely have me mixed up with a woman who cares about you.)

Notice how all of these variations of "good-bye forever" always give you, the eager male, a slight 'glimmer' of hope. Because she never actually says "good-bye forever."

She uses her creativity to make you think there may someday be a chance for you. Sorry to say, that day will never come. You would win the lottery before that ever happens.

If you want to have some fun, the next time a woman you call expresses her 'creativity' in a similar way, simply ask her point blank, "Why did you give me your number?" She will begin to sputter and stutter, and if she's really good you'll hear some real creativity. But if you do have the courage and confidence to ask that question, be sure to shut up after asking.

Simply say "Why did you give me your number?" and then don't say a word. Her response will be very interesting, and yet another lesson.

Her Interest and Her Self Esteem

Women with low self esteem and low Interest GO OUT on dates: because they want attention.

They know that any attention is better than no attention.

Her motto: "Men are to date, not to fall in love with."

Her rationale: "Maybe, with time and the right circumstances I could get to like him."
Women with average self esteem and low Interest BREAK dates because they cannot say NO to your face.
They can only say NO to your voice through a phone line or voicemail. Remember how she seemed to like you?

Her rationale for giving you her number, and then turning you down is, "I was only being polite."

Women with high self esteem and low Interest DON'T MAKE dates because they are honest.

These women don't want to mislead men, they care about men's feelings, are sweet and supportive.

These women don't want to use men, don't want to waste men's time, they love puppies, and think it is immoral and classless to go on a date unless they have at least 51% Interest in you. (It's nice to know there is still hope!)

Women with high self esteem and high Interest are the ideal combination.

Using Matt's Method you know what to do to take control of your love life.

The Text Message Trap

Women and men are using text messaging more today than ever before. I've had a couple of questions from betterdatesnow.com readers about things that have gone wrong following a text message to-or from-a prospective date.

Here's a Matt rule that should NOT be broken: NEVER use texting to make a date. NEVER!

In fact, I'll go even further and say NEVER USE TEXTING DURING THE FIRST 60 DAYS OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP!

Why Not Text?
Because, just like you, she can be anywhere, with anyone and doing anything
when she gets your text message.

Do NOT Text

First, you don't know if she got it when you sent it-or if she got it at all.

Second, you have no way of gauging her INTEREST when she got it-if she did.

And third, it establishes a bad pattern.

Here's the deal. Everyone texts, so if you settle for that you're the same as every other guy. You're nothing special.

Let's say she says, "Text me and we'll go out sometime."

You SHOULD SAY, "I prefer to hear the sound of your voice, I'll call."

I hear all kinds of horror stories about women using text messaging to break up with a guy, break a date, and often not even responding to the guy's text message because "I never got it."

Do not fall into the text trap. Don't start texting until your relationship is older than 60 days.

If you go along with her desire to text and take easy way out, you will be OUT the easy way.
