My Nov. 2 visit to Banasalan Public Cemetery!

Traditionally during the November 1 and 2 are the days where most of us Filipinos visit our loved ones in the cemetery. It is usually on the first of November where thousands flock to visit the cemetery, light a candle and offer some flowers. But I go there always on the 2nd of November, the main reason is that it is no longer very crowded and I usually go there early in the morning.

Since I now live in Digos City and my parents are laid to rest in Bansalan, Davao del Sur. I still have to take a bus which is just 20 minute ride away. The intersection leading to the cemetery is where the traffic usually stops since getting out and riding the buses, jeepneys and private vehicles goes in and the people walking through the streets.

Vendors selling candles,flowers, snack items, beverages, candies, toys and even ukay-ukay are there selling so as to make a little profit for the occasion.

A temporary chapel was put up with just a tent as a roof inside the cemetery and on the side is what the local calls the "condominium" units for their loved ones. It is a 3 storey high (sort of) where those people who cannot afford to lease a lot in the public cemetery lay their loved ones.

The cemetery in Bansalan is undergoing a major facelift courtesy of Mayor Edwin Reyes. I am very impressed, the mayor is just less than two years and already he has done a lot to develop the town and of those is developing the public cemetery. And their perspective is seen below.

Viet Ville Restaurant, Palawan!

Puerto Princesa, Palawan in the ’70’s when Vietnam war was at it’s peak there were some boat people that landed in Palawan. With the intervention of the Catholic church on behalf of the asylum seekers the Viet Ville was made possible with the financial support of Vietnamese communities around the world in helping to build this community. There are only a few Vietnamese that lives in the village most of them are now reunited with their relatives in various parts of the world and few remained in the island and some are already married to locals.
The place is now one of the tourist attraction in Palawan and a Viet Ville Restaurant is still running and are offering various Vietnamese cuisine. You cannot miss the place, it is around 20 minutes ride from Puerto Princesa and a big sign along the road is very visible and not be missed.

The Viet Ville Restaurant is the first building that you will encounter while going inside the village. The restaurant is open everyday during lunch and dinner time. If you are in Palawan it is a must visit place to go and dine.

They have a very big welcome at the entrance of the restaurant which is really very exotic and very Vietnamese in style.

The service crew is always ready and polite but to my surprise she is from Davao City and she is already working there for mare than a year. Her boss are Vietnamese and they are in the kitchen the whole time we were there.

She readily gave us a must eat dish in their restaurant. Since I usually eat rice at home. I tried their noodles with spicy beef. It is a one of a surprise for me. The noodle is cold and we ate it like a salad dish with a hot sauce on the side. It is really yummy with some mixed nuts on top and very tender meat with onions, garlic and some fresh herb on top. We also ordered spicy hot fish.

As for desert we have Dragon fruit which was sliced and placed on the plate with some caramel dip on the side. I was really full and satisfied after dinner.

A Catholic Shrine is also present on the right side of the street upon entering the village.

Then there are lots of houses made of wood and tin roof. It looks like a subdivision houses since they all look the same structurally. Very clean and well maintained houses and road.

I was very excited to attend the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit that I arrived there in GenSan City a day before the event. I went to the bus terminal and there I met Kevin of Pinoy Teens on the bus. So my travel to GenSan was not so boring at all. The travel from Digos City to GenSan took around two hours since the Guhing bridge in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur is still under construction and we have to take a long route just to get to the next town which normally will just take 15 minutes and took us around 35 minutes and some of the roads are not paved at all.

We arrived in GenSan at around 5:30 in the afternoon and a car from the city courtesy of Avel of Bariles Republic picked us up at the bus terminal and Aethen was there to see that we are brought to our hotel.

They then invited us for dinner at the Grab a Crab Restaurant which is one of the sponsors of the event.

We did not know where Grab a Crab is located, we were at the hotel lobby of the venue where the summit is going to be held. Me and Kevin waited there for Aethen to give us a text message if it's already okay for us to got there.

To bad that Aethen ran out of load for his cellphone and the text message came late already and they are already eating at the time. So me and Kevin got a tricycle to take us to the place, But the tricycle driver is not familiar with the place and had to ask another driver for the direction of the restaurant.

The group of Avel are seated in another table and we are so late that they're already finished with the main course and they are starting their dessert. We we're seated in the group where Aethen is seated together with the volunteers for the event.

The food served is very delicious, there are at least 7 main dishes that I could remember and mostly sea foods. Crab is served for sure, shrimp, fish and other sea foods to die for. We are the last one to arrive so there are lots of food that are still left and I was amazed that they did not finish eating it all.

The restaurant staff are very accomodating and the service was excellent. I would recommend anyone who visit GenSan City to go and eat at Grab A Crab Restaurant.

2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit in GenSan a success!

Last week end I was in General Santos City to attend the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit with this years theme Mindanawon Paminawon Intawon:Blogging the Mindanao Consciousness!

I arrived at the venue and there are a lot of bloggers already present, they were already cuing up to be registered. And their registration is done through computer, very high tech! The participants are more than hundred. The program started real smoothly at around 9:30 a.m. and the convention hall was already full. Bloggers from as far as Zamboanga, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and of course Davao City which came in droves. I came from Digos and got to know one other blogger from my place at the event.

The event was hosted by Migz and Joana, they hosted the event like a pro.

And what is a Blogger event in Mindanao without Bloggie? It would be very boring since he is the one who initiated the first Mindanao Bloggers Summit last year which I also attended.

This years host is GenSan and the man behind it all is no other than Avel of Bariles Republic. The event is on big success because of him an his the tremendous effort to make his event a success.

Their are lots of freebies this year and they have more volunters that contributed to the success and we are very thankful that there are still a lot of them at the event.

A Taste of India in Davao City!

There is a small store in Davao City that sells Indian spices, goodies, snack foods, yoghurt and anything from India. This is very popular store to go to. Indian Spice Mini-Mart is located inside Juna Subdivision in Matina, Davao City in front of the catholic church. It is very easy to find and you can take any tricycle driver plying the area, may it be near NCCC Mall or near SM City.

They are serving hot Samosa, a famous bite size snack food from India and the prices are very affordable. They range fom Php 8.00-14.00 depanding on the filling. They have vegetable, beef and chicken filling it goes well with their tamarind sauce. Mmmm yummy!

What I love about the place is that they have a wide variety of freshly made yogurts and they are very affordable and the sizes are also very generous compared to any mass produced yogurts made by big companies. And we have many flavors to choose from and they have low fat ones, too. Good for anyone on a diet or not.

They also have frozen and ready to cook foods on sale, thay have a variety of spices and also soaps, shampoos, canned goods, preserved fruits, rice and many more. If you are not afraid to try anything new and cook it yourself at home. This is the place to visit.

While I was there I got a bit hungry so I bought a vegetable Samosa and pair it with Buko -Pandan flavored yogurt. That made my day especially with teir tamarind sauce that goes well with Samosa. You should try and go there if you have the time. I bet it is going to be worthy of your time.

Digital Filipino and Davao Bloggers Networking Party last night!

The DigitalFilipino.com Club blogger’s event here in Davao was held last night with a roaring success at Grand Regal Hotel's Casino Filipino and PAGCOR sponsored the event. The event was hosted by no other than Janette Torral herself.

Like any other bloggers event we have to register our name and our blog at the entrance courtesy of PAGCOR of course.

Bloggers party would be boring without all those delicious food that they serve. Too bad I was at a seminar earlier, I only ate my dessrt there since I was so full.

Drinks are for free which is overflowing with beer, wine, whisky and brandy was served.

The most important of all are the participants who came and there are around 96 bloggers who attended if I am not mistaken.

Party until 11 in the evening with the music of "Music Authority Band", it was fun, fun, fun and some getting to know new bloggers and seeing old ones from past bloggers events. Watch out for more on who was at the party on my next article.

Coca-cola Body!

I never saw another country where Coca Cola advertising is so popular! Not only that there is no birthday or meeting without a cold coke but also the big red advertisements everywhere. Especially the “tindahan/tinda’an” (small stores) like painting their wooden cottages red with the Coca Cola letters all over it. The brand can be lucky because red is seen as a “happy” color here in the Philippines. Not only jeepneys but even street signs are sponsored by Coca Cola!

Bikes in a tricycle deliveries!

This is picture was taken by me on an early morning ride going to work in Digos City my resident city. I quickly got my digicam and took this pictures.

Transportation of different kind exist here in Davao, just like the tricycle as what we call it here. In other parts of the Philippines they call it Pedicab. Tricyboat(if they use a modified engine use to run a small banca/boat), Trisikad(if it is manually ran by a man which uses bicycle) and some names I am not familiar with.

They are used to transport people from one place to the other within the city and neighboring Barangays. And just like the picture shown above, they are also used for transportation of goods. I don’t know how they did it, there must be around 10-15 small bikes that fits in there.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park!

Palawan has a lot to offer when it comes to eco-tourism. Puerto Princesa’s Subterranean River National Park is almost 2 hour drive from the city and half of the road going there is not paved or cemented. Thirty minutes before you arrive at the coast going to the cave the road are mostly rough gravel and mountainous. You need to register and pay the boat fare and the underground river on the port. Then you will ride a small boat going to the park. There at the park you’ll find an entire ecosystem of fish, bats, birds and all those other wildlife to explore.

You will see this sign on the park, it is a trail sign that tells you where to go and what you expect to see.

Before anything else, you are required to:

register your name and address
wear the required attire, the helmet and life vest
Keep your voice to a minimum while inside the cave
Not to scare the cave dwellers( I don’t know what that means
No smoking and eating while inside the cave
Do not take rocks as souvenirs
Do not leave a trash in the boat or in the water
Stay calm at all times
and trust your able cave guides

If you’re all geared up for the ride then it is time to ride the boat and go inside the cave.

Look out for manong the tourist guide–this guy will make the trip even more worthwhile. But this tour guide is the best there is in the country. I tell you, he’s made my trip worthwhile. Humor on the boat–that’s nice! There are formations that I’ve seen cathedrals, bananas, even mushrooms inside this wondrous spot formed by stalactites and stalagmites for millions of years!

An advice to firs timers, be early so that you will also leave early since the cave cannot accommodate all the tourist that wants to go inside the cave at once, we have to take our turns since a boat can only accommodate 6-8 persons at a time.

That was an amazing experience, it’s all worth every penny I spent in going to Palawan!

Amorsolo retrospective at Davao Museum on Oct. 23, until Jan 13, 2009

Davao Museum of History and Ethnography will present Celebrating Ginum: A Festival for a Bountiful Harvest, a satellite exhibit of the nationwide Amorsolo Retrospective on October 23 at the museum’s Carlos O. Dominguez Gallery.

Celebrating Ginum will be the thirteenth satellite exhibit to open among 20 Amorsolo Retrospective satellite exhibits nationwide and will highlight Ginum, the pre-planting festival of the Bagobo held annually. The exhibit will drive a connection between the Bagobo community’s expression of Filipino communities’ shared aspiration of a bountiful harvest as “Fruit Harvesting”, which will accompany the exhibit.

The satellite exhibit is a joint presentation of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and the Davao Museum for the “His Heart, Our Heart” Amorsolo Retrospective. The Amorsolo Retrospective which opened last September 26 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila is aimed to take another look at Philippine National Artist Fernando Amorsolo and his fruitful life in the arts through a four-month multi-venue exhibition of his finest works.

The satellite exhibit will run until January 13, 2009.

The first thing that tourists will see when they arrive in Davao City is the Davao International Airport. For local and foreign tourist they will see Davao airport first and hope that your stay here will be remembered always.

Becoming a millionaire has less to do with how much you make, it's how you treat money in your daily life.

According to the writer, here are 10 more possible reasons you aren’t rich:

1. You care what your car looks like: A car is a means of transportation to get from one place to another, but many people don’t view it that way. Instead, they consider it a reflection of themselves and spend money every two years or so to impress others instead of driving the car for its entire useful life and investing the money saved.

2. You feel entitlement: If you believe you deserve to live a certain lifestyle, have certain things and spend a certain amount before you have earned to live that way, you will have to borrow money. That large chunk of debt will keep you from building wealth.

3. You lack diversification: There is a reason one of the oldest pieces of financial advice is to not keep all your eggs in a single basket. Having a diversified investment portfolio makes it much less likely that wealth will suddenly disappear.

Harry is Asia’s most promising magician to perform in Davao City!

12 year old Thailander Wuthinan Krichkumchorn, or simply Harry is a promising magician of Asia. He won the Peoples Choice Awrd in the recently concluded International Festival of Magic in Malaysia. You must watch him perform, he is so small that he looks like a 6 year old.

He and several other topnotch Asian magicians will be in Davao City for the three-day 2nd International Magic Festival this weekend. A competition, open to all Filipino magicians, will start on Friday at the atrium of Gaisano Mall of Davao, and the finals will be held on Saturday, also at the same venue. The Friday and Saturday shows are for free. On Sunday evening is the grand show at CAP Auditorium featuring Asia’s Harry Potter.

Davao City's People's Park!

One of the most visited park s in Davao City which is situated at the center of the city. Just across Casa Leticia Hotel and at the back of Apo View Hotel. This is very crowded during weekends and especially at night when the weather it at its mildest.

If you come and visit Davao City, don't forget to drop by People's Park, It will cost you nothing to visit the park.

House sawn half by divorcing couple!!!

Divorce woes Cambodian style! A house divided . . . Literally! You gotta believe this!

A divorced couple in Cambodia agreed to split everything in half...LITERALLY! They cut their family home in half. The wife's half is still sitting on the same lot. The husband has taken his half in bits and pieces to a nearby field. The couple also decided to split their land into four parts, two for them and two for their children.

The husband cut the house in half with the help of a few friends, a saw, a hammer and chisels. The couple decided to handle the division of assets their own way because they felt court would be too expensive.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterete will still present suspected criminals to media!

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte insist that he will still present criminal suspects in the city to the media. That is is his incentive since “he is the city chief executive and not a police officer.” Only the Philippine National Police are not allowed to present suspected criminals to the media for human rights reason of the suspects as directed by a new ruling.

Duterte said the PNP’s order would not affect his no-nonsense drive against criminality as he will continue to go after hardened criminals and swindlers operating in the city and present them in public once they are arrested to protect the interest of Davaoeños.
