I have been having a conversation with Moya and Nuala about BET, Drake, and Lil Wayne. The conversation has been interesting in that I have been pushing hard against being reactionary. Its challenging, because when you react you feel empowered. But, we, the masses, always have the power, whether or not we use it is another question. We outnumber the executives and the politicians. Always. Black Women It is important to note that there are Black women who are only angry because Drake's video features light skinned Latina's and White women. From the Sandra Rose website, "Sandra as a woman I am offended that this is all Kanye West, the director, could come up with for one of the hottest songs of the summer. He should be ashamed of this depiction of females. This video in a nutshell basically says a woman’s beauty is defined by how big her boobs are and light her skin is. And Kanye being a black man raised by black parents and Drake being bi-raicial (half black and half white) why are they only showcasing ALL Hispanic girls in this video? I don’t get it, they couldn’t get ONE pretty chocolate sister up in the video like Lanisha Cole, Jessica White, or Natasha Ellie to be in the video alongside the Hispanic girls?..." I read this, thought about it, read it again then realized that, getting more Black women to care about rap videos, simply takes only featuring Latina's and White women. Hmmmp. In fact, on Tuesday. I tweeted that in some ways the the only way for Black women to be upset about rap videos is if they are excluded. I was surprised that five people responded. We have allies after all. What does it mean, and what does it say about Black women, and the recognition of Black beauty in mainstream media, if we are only mad because a clearly sexist video doesn't have any brown skinned women in it? Apologies and Boycott's BET and Drake have both apologized. An apology without an action is worthless. Especially when the apology does nothing to materially impact harm that has been done. Lets review the facts. BET has received its ad dollars. Advertisers commercials were exposed to 10M viewers. Some Black people have written letter and a petition and get an apology. The first two points have to do with an exchange of money, the last one doesn't. One question for BET? What is your apology worth? In my conversation with Moya, we are talking about boycott's and how they are reactionary. The idea is that if we spend all of our time reacting to what some one is doing to us, then we will have no energy left to advance our own agenda's. The advertisers for the Bet awards were, Dodge, Procter &amp;amp; Gamble, Target, CIROC Vodka, Ford, Coors, Pepsi, Verizon Wireless and Akademiks. You know, in case you were wondering. According to Target Market News, In a recent mulitmedia engagement of 5,000 African American adults, Simmons market Research Bureay found that BET viewers are 21% more ad receptive when they watch ads on BET, and 31% more ad rece[tive when they see ads on Bet.com, versus other networks.[Sidebar. Why do corporations cause harm and governments stay taking forced free labor and or ad dollars, and giving us apologies? It's rhetorical] While there are many people who are angry about what BET has done, just because folks are angry, does't mean that they care enough to take non-reactionary action. Take Imus, he was censored temporarily, there was a big hullaboo, and he is back on the air. Capitalism stay eatin', nothing stops it. Imus nor Wayne, nor Drake, are the problem. They are symptoms of a larger one. Moya astutely pointed out we often say that "Them rappers ain't talking about me", she then noted that, Wayne just said he "wish he could fuck every girl in the world", that includes all of us, you too Love. BET? What do you think of the women being angry because no brown skinned women were featured? You see the awards? Have you though</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Hip,Hop,Feminism,Brooklyn,Politics,Oakland,African,American</itunes:keywords><description>The jump @ 3:55 sec

On June 18th the Senate Passed a resolution offering an apology for slavery. What do all of these things have in common? Race, power and the possessive investment in whiteness. The way in which the online and mainstream media lamented and analyzed "the appearance" of identity politics, in many ways, could have led a reasonable person to believe that identity politics constituted a minor annoyance and not material issue rooted in U.S. history. Race has been and arguably always will be political. When a country changes it laws classify children born to enslaved parents to be legally classified as slaves at birth, race will be political. In the book, The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, George Lipsitz provides an analytical framework that is helpful in analyzing identity politics as it pertains to whiteness. He writes, Yet, once we remember that whiteness is also an identity one a long political history, contemporary attacks on "identity" politics come into clear relief as a defense of the traditional privileges and priorities of whiteness in the face of critical and political projects that successfully disclose who actually hold power in this society and what has been done with it. Whiteness is everywhere in U.S. culture, but very hard to see. As Richard Dyer suggests, "White Power secures its dominance by not seeming to be anything in particular. " As the unmarked category against which differnce is constructed, whiteness never has to speak its name, never has to acknowledge its role as an organizing principal in social and cultural relations. George Lipsitz goes on to define the investment when he writes, I use the term possessive to stress the relationship between and asset accumulation in our society, to connect attitudes to interest, to demonstrate that white supremacy is less a matter of direct, referential, and snarling contempt than a system for protecting the privileges of whites by denying communities of color opportunities for asset accumulation and upward mobility. Whiteness is invested in like property, but it also a means of accumulating property and keeping it from others...Talking about race can be challenging because, well, it is a sensitive topic. Talking about race as a social construct that is rooted in history is a whole other ball game, largely because we move from pointing fingers to analyzing systems. This can be difficult but it gives us a framework for analysis. If I talk about Black men in hip hop, some people may think that I am talking about all Black men. If I talk about white folks and White supremacy some may think that I am talking about all white folks. My goal is to look at the system in which we all live, attend school, vote, pay rent, lose mortgages (lol). Yes, this may mean looking at individuals, but we will fall short if we don't look at the system and how power is distributed as well. With this in mind, I was glad when I came across the following passage in Lipsitz's book, Opposing whiteness is not the same as opposing white people. White supremacy is an equal opportunity employer: nonwhite people can become active agents of white supremacy as well as passive participants in hierarchies and rewards. One way of becoming an insider is by participating in the exclusion of other outsiders. An individual might even secure a seat on the supreme court on this basis.....On the other hand, if not every white supremacist is white, it follows that not all white people have to become com licit with white supremacy, that there is an element f choice in all of this.In thinking about the ways of becoming an insider I am reminded of having conversations with Black immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa and being amazed at their overt and subliminal ways in which they have expressed a belief that African Americans are lazy. My first inclination was to say that we are this countries oldest residents, along with w</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Hip,Hop,Feminism,Brooklyn,Politics,Oakland,African,American</itunes:keywords><description>On May 29th Rush Limbaugh called President Obama

People protest around the world all of the time, but there is something about this that is moving. The police beating on them reminds me of East Oakland. I have also been reading Chomsky, so the mainstream media's blackout clear, intentional and noticeable. Background - The Iranian Revolution 1979 Here is a little background on the Iranian Revolution in 1979. According to Wikipedia, The Iranian Revolution of 1979 (mostly known as the Islamic Revolution, Persian: انقلاب اسلامی, Enghelābe Eslāmi) refers to events involving the overthrow of Iran's monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and its replacement with an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution. It has been called an event that "made Islamic fundamentalism a political force ... from Morocco to Malaysia." The revolution was populist, nationalist and later Shi'a Islamic. It was in part a conservative backlash against the Westernizing and secularizing efforts of the Western-backed Shah, and not-so-conservative reaction to social injustice and other shortcomings of the ancien regime. The Shah was perceived by many as beholden to — if not a puppet of — a non-Muslim Western power, (the United States), whose culture was contaminating that of Iran's. The Shah's regime was also seen as oppressive, brutal, corrupt, and extravagant. The regime also suffered from basic functional failures — an overly-ambitious economic program that brought economic bottlenecks, shortages and inflation.Security forces were unable to deal with protest and demonstrations; Iran was an overly centralized royal power structure. The extraordinarily large size of the anti-shah movement meant that there "were literally too many protesters to arrest", and that the security forces were overwhelmed.Context for Today's Protests Henry Newman from the Guardian writes, There seems little doubt now that something resembling a coup d'état has been attempted in Tehran. The next few days will reveal if it is to succeed. In scenes not witnessed since the mass protests that brought about a revolution that deposed the Shah in 1979, violent demonstrations have broken out in multiple Iranian cities. Crowds chant anti-Ahmedinejad slogans such as "Death to the Dictator". Hundreds of thousands of supporters of the candidate heavily defeated in Friday's presidential election, Mir Hossein Mousavi, have rejected his defeat – claiming foul play.... This crisis in Iran has two broad possible outcomes: either the regime will back down and arrange for a recount or the security forces will act to preserve control by using ever more violent means to quash the demonstrations. Unfortunately, the latter scenario seems more probable. At this point, it is pertinent to ask who is running the show: is Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader and official head of state, really holding the levers of power, or has control been seized by re-elected President Ahmedinejad? What about ex-President Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council, who was humiliated by the Supreme Leader yesterday and portrayed as corrupt and traitorous. Some suggest that he has travelled to Qom, Iran's holiest city, to try to persuade senior clerics to back him and Mousavi. Ever since the revolution, power in Iran has been fragmented and divided; now it seems more so than ever. At this stage and with such insufficient evidence it is extremely hard to tell what forces are really at play. What are the global implications of this? Bush said that Iran was apart of the axis of evil, yet President Obama has said that we wants to have talks with Iran. It was subsequently reported in conservative mainstream media, during the recent presidential election that he wanted to hold hands with te</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Hip,Hop,Feminism,Brooklyn,Politics,Oakland,African,American</itunes:keywords><description>via Andrew Sullivan

But peep, I didn't listen to it until Sunday. When I heard it I was floored. I couldn't place the horns. It sounded like the horns from Jennifer Lopez's Get Right. You see, as I child I played the clarinet . Yes, pre-Crack, Oakland Public Schools had band classes. So, I learned how to hear the difference between a clarinet, flute, trumpet tenor and alto saxophone. My ear is mean. I had to learn to distinguish the sounds and read music in order to play in band recitals. I am also a huge Resurrection fan and have been curious as to what has happened to No ID. Voila! Here he is on a Jay Z track. So, listening to that Jay song, I was like word? Yet. I was underwhelmed by it. I didn't feel like he said anything. The beat was nasty. But I wanted more. Birkhold, of course, disagreed and loved the song. He couldn't see why I liked the beat but not the song in its entirety. I said, "Well, with a beat like that, I wanted something sincere like Dear Summer, from Jay, I mean when was the last time you heard a live horn on a track outside of The Roots and Kanye?" He responded saying, "Well, I have stopped expecting anything from a rap song, so if I hear a banging track or a hot 16, I just appreciate it for what it is. I stopped believing in hip hop's political potential a long time ago." I was stuck. Because that was the disconnect. I had expectations that he no longer had. Previously, I had mentioned to him how writing about the white consumption of Black death in hip hop was both tiring and necessary. I told him that Dyson has a new book out and he said that if Dyson would just critique hip hop's money over bitches ethos or its awful gender politics once, publicly and clearly, it would change the terrain of our work. His rationale is that when folks who have larger platform's offer up any kind of resistance to the dominant narrative, it makes it easier for those who are grass roots to make headway. Dyson would be the appetizer and the folks who do work on gender and social justice could be the main course. I thought of this when I saw Jim Jones saying that Jay was trying to knock his hustle by dissing autotune in the above video. Peep if I say something about auto tune, its one thing, if Jay Z does, it's a whole other ball game. It reminded me of how when folks who have larger platforms offer resistance, it can force their peers and the people who follow them to think about resistance as well, or at least to question where they stand in relation to the narrative that is being resisted. I was speaking with K1NG regarding my most recent post, and it became clear to me that it is hard to admit that hip hop certainly does some good however it does an incredible amount of harm, specifically around gender and race, as well. k1ng:I think hip hop is one of the biggest cultural bridges there has EVER been in America9:38 PMIf it wasn't for hip hop i'm sure i wouldn't be as open minded as i am today me: thats cool9:39 PM k1ng: Unfortunately with all the good it's done, it's done alot of bad for the upperclass view of inner city african americans In all honesty me: you think k1ng: What they see on the TV is what they believe i KNOW lol me: you feel me k1ng: i've been around them me: ME TOO hence the name, model minority lols Hip hop has always been been a little ignorant, and that's cool. The issue is the lack of diversity. The most challenging aspect around addressing the racism in hip hop imagery is sheer unwillingness for folks who listen to the music to admit the role that race plays in choosing which images should be marketed. The above conversation shows that folks are willing to do it, it is just a hard thing to accept. That being said, I was reading about the new Black Disney Princess and was amazed at how language used to describe the princess, is the same language that can be us</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Hip,Hop,Feminism,Brooklyn,Politics,Oakland,African,American</itunes:keywords><description>For Hip Hop News &amp;amp; Entertainment at DimeWars.ComJim Jones on Jay Z @ 1:18 seconds

Some people may say, well, "I won't watch it" or "I won't let my son or daughter watch it." My response to that is that you and I, and your daughter and son, all live in this world together. Their friends are watching it, and our children are influenced by their friends. To say that my child will be protected because I don't let them consume these images is akin to saying that I will protect them from air pollution by carving out four square feet of air around them to breath at all times. It just isn't possible. Another response may may be, "what you are talking about doesn't affect me and mine in my neighborhood." In the essay Letters from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr. offers the perfect response to that statement. He writes, It may be easy to say that what happens in your neighborhood is unrelated to what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with narrow, provincial "outside agitator idea". Anyone who lives inside the United states can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.Earlier this month I wrote about the white consumption of Black death in hip hop. Many people felt that I was overstating the power of white consumers. Readers kept offering that the Black kids are the ones who say what's hot in the first place, which implicitly means that Black kid are just as culpable and that I shouldn't emphasize the white consumption of black death in Hip Hop. This line of thought reminds me of the argument that white slave holders aren't really that culpable for their role in chattel slavery because Africans participated in enslavement of other Africans. I think in terms of systems, not individuals. Furthermore, the hyper consumption of these images is the consumption of hatred of Black people, regardless of the or ethnicity of the listener. Trust, when it takes a Black president, a Black leader of the free world to convince mainstream Americans and the world, that Black men are not angry, violent, hypersexualized beasts, then we seriously need to rethink the production and consumption of hypersexual, violent black men in mainstream media. While I wasn't willing to stop focusing on the consumption of Black death, the readers comments forced me to think about the history of hip hop behind the scenes. In order to provide historical support for my position I did some research and read Nelson George's, Hip Hop America, Jeff Chang's Can't Stop, Won't Stop and S. Craig Watkin's Hip Hop Matters. In Hip Hop Matters, S. Craig Watkin's, explains the impact of Soundscan on Hip Hop and provides a frame work for understanding the white consumption of Black death in Hip Hop. Watkin's writes, ...A few years after N.W.A's success, Eazy-E reflected on hard core's mainstream breakthrough. "When N.W.A was together we were tal</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Hip,Hop,Feminism,Brooklyn,Politics,Oakland,African,American</itunes:keywords><description>Photo Credits Clockwise:

Below you will find an excerpt to Kevin Weston's and Aurturo Tejada's artist's statement, titled "Hating Lovelle Loving Obama." They write, As artists we were trying to provoke thought and raise questions. Lovelle Mixon is a product of this society, just like our current president.... ...People are going to demonize Lovelle Mixon for what he did. In this society’s eyes he was a rapist, a thug, a murderer, a cop killer. He was all of those things. What Mixon wasn’t, even before he committed these brutal murders, was a human being. No one—and I mean no one—gives a fuck about the Lovelle Mixons of he world. If he died at the hands of another black man (which is the case for most murders of black men) there would have been barely a blip on the radar screen. Because he was a convicted felon—constitutionally he was a slave (read the 14th and 15th amendments carefully)....The Graphic is intended to raise questions, not answer them. Below is an excerpt from the transcript of the above David Simon interview. I have posted it because I think it is relevant to the this discussion about East Oakland, Capitalism, rape, Lovelle Mixon and the post crack urban economy. DAVID SIMON: Right. You see the equivocations. You see the stuff that doesn't make it into the civics books. And also you see how interconnected things are. How connected the performance of the school system is to the culture of a corner. Or where parenting comes in. And where the lack of meaningful work in all these things, you know, the decline of industry suddenly interacts with the paucity and sort of fraud of public education in the inner city. Because THE WIRE is not a story about the America, it's about the America that got left behind. BILL MOYERS: I was struck by something, I forget where I read it, that you said. You were wrestling with this one big existential question. And you talked about drug addicts who would come out of detox and then try to steel jaw themselves through their neighborhood. And then they'd come face to face with the question, which is? DAVID SIMON: "What am I doing here? What am I doing here?" You know, all the same problems that a guy coming out of addiction at 30, 35, because it often takes to that age, he often got into addiction with a string of problems, some of which were interpersonal and personal, and some of which were systemic. The fact that these really are the excess people in America, we-- our economy doesn't need them. We don't need ten or 15 percent of our population. And certainly the ones that are undereducated, that have been ill served by the inner city school system, that have been unprepared for the technocracy of the modern economy. We pretend to need them. We pretend to educate the kids. We pretend that we're actually including them in the American ideal, but we're not. And they're not foolish. They get it. DAVID SIMON: Again, we would have to ask ourselves a lot of hard questions. The people most affected by this are black and brown and poor. It's the abandoned inner cores of our urban areas. And we don't, as we said before, economically, we don't need those people. The American economy doesn't need them. So, as long as they stay in their ghettos, and they only kill each other, we're willing to pay a police presence to keep them out of our America. And to let them fight over scraps, which is what the drug war, effectively, is. I don't think-- since we basically have become a market-based culture and it's what we know, and it's what's led us to this sad, I think we're going to follow market-based logic, right to the bitter end. BILL MOYERS: Which says? DAVID SIMON: If you don't need 'em, why extend yourself? Why seriously assess what you're doing to your poorest and most vulnerable citizens? There's no profit to be had in doing anything other than marginalizing them and discarding them. When I learned that Lovelle Mixon killed three Oakland Police Officers, Sgt.
