"Why on earth would anyone want to adopt a rescued dog?
After all, aren't they like used cars? Who wants someone else's problems? If the dog is so
wonderful, why would anyone give him away? If he was a stray, why didn't someone try to
find him? I'd rather buy a puppy so I know what I'm getting, and besides they're so
cute!" ...

Rescue groups often hear a variation of this conversation.
Many prospective dog owners are just not convinced that owning an older (i.e, 6 mo.+)
"pre-owned" dog is better than buying a puppy. But there are a number of reasons
why adopting a dog from a rescue that carefully screens and evaluates its dogs can
provide an even better alternative. Here are the "Top 10 Reasons You Should Consider
a Rescue."

10) In a Word--Housebroken. With most family
members gone during the work week for 8 hours or more, housetraining a puppy and its small
bladder can take awhile. Puppies need a consistent schedule with frequent opportunities to
eliminate where you want them to. They can't wait for the boss to finish his meeting or
the kids to come home from after school activities. An older dog can "hold it"
much more reliably for longer time periods, and usually the rescue has him housebroken
before he is adopted.

9) Intact Underwear. With a chewy puppy, you
can count on at least 10 mismatched pairs of socks and a variety of unmentionables
rendered to the "rag bag" before he cuts every tooth. Also, you can expect holes
in your carpet (along with the urine stains), pages missing from books, stuffing exposed
from couches, and at least one dead remote control. No matter how well you watch them, it
will happen--this is a puppy's job! An older dog can usually have the run of the house
without destroying it.

8) A Good Night's Sleep. Forget the alarm
clocks and hot water bottles, a puppy can be very demanding at 2am and 4am and 6am. He
misses his littermates, and that stuffed animal will not make a puppy pile with him. If
you have children, you've been there and done that. How about a little peace and quiet?
How about an older rescue lab??

7) Finish the Newspaper. With a puppy
running amok in your house, do you think you will be able to relax when you get home from
work? Do you think your kids will really feed him, clean up the messes, take him for a
walk in the pouring rain every hour to get him housetrained? With an adult dog, it will
only be the kids running amok, because your dog will be sitting calmly next to you,
while your workday stress flows away and your blood pressure lowers as you pet him.

6) Easier Vet Trips. Those puppies need
their series of puppy shots and fecals, then their rabies shot, then a trip to be altered,
maybe an emergency trip or two if they've chewed something dangerous. Those puppy visits
can add up (on top of what you paid for the dog). Your donation to the rescue when
adopting an older pup should get you a dog with all shots current, already altered,
heartworm negative and on preventative at the minimum.

5) What You See Is What You Get. How big
will that puppy be? What kind of temperament will he have? Will he be easily trained? Will
his personality be what you were hoping for? How active will he be? When adopting an older
dog from a rescue, all of those questions are easily answered. You can pick large or
small; active or couch potato; goofy or brilliant; sweet or sassy. The rescue and its
foster homes can guide you to pick the right match. (Rescue groups are full of puppies who
became the wrong match as they got older!)

4) Unscarred Children (and Adults). When the
puppy isn't teething on your possessions, he will be teething on your children and
yourself. Our rescue routinely gets called from panicked parents who are sure their dog is
biting the children. Since biting implies hostile intent and would be a consideration
whether we accept their give-up, we ask questions and usually find out the dog is being
nippy. Parents are often too emotional to see the difference; but a growing puppy is going
to put everything from food to clothes to hands in their mouths, and as they get older and
bigger it definitely hurts (and will get worse, if they aren't being corrected properly.)
Most older labs have "been there, done that, moved on."

3) Matchmaker Make Me a Match. Puppy love is
often no more than an attachment to a look or a color. It is not much of a basis on which
to make a decision that will hopefully last 15+ years. While that puppy may have been the
cutest of the litter; he may grow up to be superactive (when what you wanted was a couch
buddy); she may be a couch princess (when what you wanted was a tireless hiking
companion); he may want to spend every waking moment in the water (while you're a
landlubber); or she may want to be an only child (while you are intending to have kids or
more animals). Pet mis-matches are one of the top reasons rescues get give-up phone calls.
Good rescues do extensive evaluating of both their dogs and their applicants to be sure
that both dog and family will be happy with each other until death due they part.

2) Instant Companion. With an older dog,
you automatically have a buddy that can go everywhere and do everything with you NOW.
There's no waiting for a puppy to grow up (and then hope he will like to do what you
enjoy.) You will have been able to select the most compatible dog: one that travels well;
one that loves to play with your friends' dogs; one with excellent house manners that you
can take to your parents' new home with the new carpet and the new couch. You can come
home after a long day's work and spend your time on a relaxing walk, ride or swim with
your new best friend (rather than cleaning up after a small puppy.)

1) Bond--Doggie Bond. Dogs who have been
uprooted from their happy homes or have not had the best start in life are more likely to
bond very completely and deeply with their new people. Those who have lost their families
through death, divorce or lifestyle change go through a terrible mourning process. But,
once attached to a new loving family, they seem to want to please as much as possible to
make sure they are never homeless again. Those dogs that are just learning about the
good life and good people seem to bond even deeper. They know what life on the streets,
life on the end of a chain, or worse is all about, and they revel and blossom in a
nurturing, loving environment. Most rescues make exceptionally affectionate and attentive
pets and extremely loyal companions.

Unfortunately, many folks think dogs that end up in rescue
are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. But, it is not uncommon for rescue to get
$500-1000 dogs that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive
owners who considered their dog a possession rather than a friend or member of the family,
or simply did not really consider the time, effort and expense needed to be a dog owner.
Not all breeders will accept "returns", so choices for giving up dogs can be
limited to animal welfare organizations, such as rescues, or the owners trying to place
their own dogs. Good rescues will evaluate the dog before accepting him/her (medically,
behaviorally, and for breed confirmation), rehabilitate if necessary, and adopt the animal
only when he/she is ready and to a home that matches and is realistic about the commitment
necessary to provide the dog with the best home possible.

Choosing a rescue dog over a purchased pup will not solve the
pet overpopulation problem (only responsible pet owners and breeders can do that), but it
does give many of them a chance they otherwise would not have. But, beyond doing a
"good deed", adopting a rescue dog can be the best decision and addition to the
family you ever made.

Rescue a dog and get a
devoted friend for life!

Buying
a puppy? Or thinking of buying a puppy? How exciting!
This page is intended to provide some general information
for the potential Great Dane owner. We could not possibly
cover every aspect of this wonderful breed so specific
details are best discussed with the breeder with whom
you are considering the purchase of a puppy. There are
however, some important points we would like to share
                        with you.

• Great Danes are giants
in the dog world. That means more food, more exercise
and more expensive veterinary costs. Be sure you can
afford to keep a Dane in good health!

• As with any dog, regular exercise and training
is important - with large or giant dogs it is essential.
These dogs grow very quickly and investing the time
to socialize and train your puppy while they are young
cannot be overstressed An uncontrollable, unruly or
poorly trained 150 lb dog is a disaster waiting to
                            happen.
Some excellent books on puppy rearing are available:
- How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With (Rutherford
                            & Neil), Alpine Publications, 1992.

• Like many other purebred dogs, Danes come with
their own set of health risks. One of the most common
(and most dangerous) is bloat. Bloat is also known
as gastric torsion, a condition in which the stomach
fills with gas, twists and is unable to escape. This
is a life-threatening condition and every Dane owner
should be aware of the signs of bloat, as well as
the precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk
of this happening. Not all danes bloat, but it can
happen with any bloodline if the conditions are right.
Please see these links for valuable bloat information
that every Dane owner should have:

Bloat in Large Dogs and Gastric
Torsion in Dogs ( both highly recommended
                            reading)

• Danes have critical growing periods. These
are stages in their lives, usually within their first
year, where their nutritional needs must be met if
the dog is to achieve his full potential. Skimping
here will result in a poorly matured dog.

Not frightened away yet? GREAT! Because Great Danes
are one of the most people oriented dogs around. They
make excellent companions! They have a gentle and
pleasing nature with a proud dignified bearing. You
should know up front that Danes thoroughly enjoy their
creature comforts and will happily take over the couch
                            if permitted!

The
Great Dane is known as the "Apollo of all dogs."
Incised on some Greek money dating back to 36 B.C. is
the image of a dog very similar to the Great Dane of today.
An illustration dating back to approximately 600 B.C.
shows Assyrian huntsmen with Dane-like dogs. In 407 A.D.
German Gaul and part of Italy and Spain were invaded by
an Asiatic people who brought with them powerful mastiff-like
dogs. In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals
capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired,
a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were
crossed with Irish Greyhounds, and the result was the
beautiful, large dog known today as the Great Dane.
From the middle to the late 1800s, breeders both in
Germany and England became very interested in the breed
and more or less developed it to the standards, which
are recognised today. It has been claimed that the Great
Dane is German in origin, which is not certain. However,
what is evident, is that German breeders contributed
largely to bringing the Great Dane to its glory of today.
Why the breed is called under different names is uncertain.
The breed did not originate in Denmark, yet in most
English speaking countries the breed is called 'Great
Dane', in most of central Europe it is recognised as
'Deutsche Dogge', though in France, it is recognised
as both 'Dogue Allemand' and 'Danois'. In Holland, 'Duitse
Dogge' and 'Deense Dogge' and in Italy it is called
'Alano'. In 1880, Germany adopted the Great Dane as
its national dog and was called the Deutsche Dogge and
in England the breed was recognised by the Kennel Club
in 1884 as the Great Dane.

It is
strongly recommended that buyers wishing a purebred puppy
purchase ONLY a registered Great Dane. It is only
in this way that you will be guaranteed a purebred puppy
and it reflects the committment and sincerity of the breeder.

Purchasing an unregistered Great Dane is unwise on many
fronts. Will this 'breeder' stand behind the puppy? What
if inherited health issues arise - are they prepared to
replace the puppy or refund your money? Have the parents
been tested clear of eye, thyroid or hip problems? Can
you call them for advice on your puppy or with any problems
                        you may encounter? Likely not.

We recommend that you begin your search with reputable
breeders who are members of the Great Dane Club of Canada.
Should one not be able to supply you with the type of
puppy you are looking for, they can refer you to other
                        known reputable breeders.

Factors to Consider
When Purchasing a Great Dane Puppy
In choosing a purebred puppy you assure yourself
of many characteristics, which your adult dog will have.
A healthy puppy is round and robust. It should be friendly
and outgoing-a bundle of kisses and tail wags. At the
puppy stage, they should be playful. The coat should
be shiny and the eyes bright. A mentally sound puppy
should not be shy or reserved. This may be the sign
of an unsteady or nervous temperament.

You should inquire about the health of the Great Danes
in the breeder's line and the temperament of the dogs.
Although it is not always possible to meet the sire
of the puppies it should usually be possible to meet
the dam. Her manner will provide you with a good indication
of the temperament of the line. A good breeder knows
the background of the puppies and should be a good source
of information to the to the purchaser. They should
be available for support throughout your dog's life.
All breeders with years of experience will have
encountered some health issues. Any long time breeder
who claims to have never had health issues should be
                          avoided.

Registration
Registration of your new Great Dane is the responsibility
of the breeder of your dog. The Canadian Kennel Club
is the registration body for puppies born in Canada
while the American Kennel Club is the registration body
in the United States of America. In Canada, the Canadian
Kennel Club under the jurisdiction of the Federal Department
of Agriculture's Animal Pedigree Act administers the
conditions of registration. This Act states that registration
papers must be provided for any animal sold as purebred,
at no additional cost to the purchaser within six months
of the date of sale. The Act provides for stiff penalties
for those persons not adhering to these conditions.

Terms of Sale
The terms of sale of your Great Dane puppy should
be in writing between you and the breeder. This
agreement should contain information about the expectation
that the breeder has of the purchaser such as the signing
of a non-breeding contract, the diet to be fed, the
immunization protocol to be followed. For example, there
it may be wise to discuss the matter of ear cropping.
Although many breeders !crop the ears on the puppies
they sell, they are others who refuse to allow any of
their puppies to be cropped. Most breeders tend to be
                          more flexible.
If you are uncertain about any of the terms of sale
it is important that they be clarified prior to the
sale. If you cannot accept the terms it is best not
to proceed with the purchase until both you and the
breeder are in agreement over the terms of the sale.
Details may become very important if a problem does
arise in the future. Even the with most conscientious
breeders problems may arise. Some breeders feel that
if any part of the agreement is violated that the
                            whole agreement is invalid.

Colors of Great Danes:

                      Danes
come in six acceptable colors: Fawn, Brindle, Black, Blue,
                        Boston (Mantle), and Harlequin.

Fawn: a golden yellow with a black mask on the
                        face.
Brindle: Golden base coat with defined black striped
laid over as chevrons..almost tiger striped appearance.
Black: Solid black colored dog..
Blue: a steel gray solid color
Boston/Mantle: this pattern is best described as
marked like a penguin, must have a white tail tip or is
                        not considered a true Boston.
Harlequin: A white dane with torn black patches
                        distributed over the body.
For more details please go to the breed
                        standard.

These colors are acceptable to show in conformation for
a Canadian championship. Although a mismarked dane can
be born in a litter, they are registerable as they are
purebred, from registered parents. A mismark is a colour
not acceptable for competition in comformation (ie. merle,
harls with too much black, blacks with large white spots
on their body, brindles with little or no fawn base color,
etc) Aside from the colour, mismarked colored danes still
can preform in functions scantioned by the Canadian kennel
club, just not in conformation. They are as equally wonderful
                        a pet as a conformation-marked dane.

Caveat: Don't be fooled - there are no 'rare'
coloured Great Danes. Don't walk, run from any breeder
claiming to have a 'rare' coloured dane.

Great
Danes, as a giant breed grow very quickly, but do not
fully mature until they are about two years of age or
older. Some breeders do not feel that they are fully mature
until 3 or 4 years of age. In this growing process they
do pass through some very awkward stages. Growth plates
are changing, bones are moving, cartilage is forming.
Injuries during a puppy's first year may become permanent
problems for the dog. Too much exercise at an early age
is detrimental to good development. Forced exercise is
not recommended for this breed - puppies should be allowed
to play until they are tired.

The following weight chart gives an overview of the growth
                        pattern of Great Danes.

Immunization and vaccination:
Traditionally all dogs received
their first immunization at six weeks of age, followed
by a 2nd vaccine four weeks later and a 3rd four weeks
after that. At six months of age there was to be another
dose and a usually a rabies vaccine as well. This
was to be followed by yearly vaccines.

Many veterinarians and breeders
no longer believe that it is beneficial or wise to
subject the immune system of a young puppy to this
number of vaccines. The protocol for the reduced numbers
of vaccines is still being developed. Most breeders
are immunizing their puppies in some form and will
be able to share information regarding the vaccines
they are recommending with the new owner.

There are breeders who feel that vaccination in any
form is detrimental to the health of your puppy and
recommend a homeopathic or holistic approach. The
experience breeders have had with their dogs will
                            determine the advice they provide.
Much work is still being done by veterinarian research
centers to determine what vaccines are beneficial
and necessary for the optimum health of your puppy.

You may help to ease your pet’s symptoms with the use of
some over-the-counter medicines. However, it’s never a good idea to just
assume a human medication will be a safe and effective treatment for
your pet. Contact your veterinarian before starting any medical therapy,
to discuss your options. Always let the veterinarian know your pet’s
symptoms and what you have been treating it with. As with all illnesses,
persistent symptoms warrant a trip to the doctor’s office.

WARNING! DO NOT GIVE!
Acetaminophen(Tylenol) and Ibuprofen
(Advil, Motrin IB) are toxic to both cats and dogs, even in small doses.
Many medications can be highly toxic to cats, including Pepto Bismol,
Kaopectate and aspirin.

Here is a list of over-the-counter medications that can be safely
used for your pet. Please read everything before administering an OTC
medication to your pet. If it is not on this list — do not give it!

IMODIUM (loperamide):
Can be given to some dogs and cats for diarrhea. WARNING: Certain dog
breeds related to Collies may have adverse reactions to Imodium
(loperamide). Do not give this medicine to Collies, Shelties, Australian
Shephards and Long-haired Whippits. See this site for more detailed
information. (Thanks to Ken Brookner for this correction.)
For those animals for which this medicine is appropriate give 1
teaspoon for every 20 pounds. This dosage can be repeated every 4-6
hours until symptoms begin to resolve, not to exceed 24 hours.
PEPTO-BISMOL:
Can be administered to dogs (never cats!) with upset stomach or
vomiting. Give one teaspoon per 20 pounds of weight every 4-6 hours for
24 hours, or until symptoms begin to resolve.

BENADRYL(Diphenhydramine):
Benadryl is an antihistamine that helps relieve swellings and itching from allergic reactions and is used long-term to treat allergies.
The dose is one milligram for every pound given twice daily. (Although
safe to use, Benadryl is not very effective in cats, and other
antihistamines are more commonly prescribed.)
Benadryl Dosage
Twice daily
Dogs
(1 mg per pound) Cats
weight amount
12 lbs 12 milligrams
(pediatric dose) NOT
EFFECTIVE
25 lbs 25 milligrams
(1 adult capsule)
50 lbs 50 milligrams
(2 adult capsules)

ASPIRIN:
Can be given short term to dogs (never cats!) to help relieve
inflammation and pain. Buffered Aspirin (Bufferin) is easier on the
stomach but regular (non-coated) aspirin can also be used. Aspirin may
be given once or twice a day. Always give aspirin with food.
Aspirin has potent blood thinning properties, and continued usage may be dangerous in some animals. For long term pain relief there are safer veterinary-specific alternatives.
Aspirin Dosage
Once or twice a day, with food
Dogs Cats
weight amount
less than 10 lbs ½ baby aspirin NEVER!
10-30 lbs 1 baby aspirin
30-50 lbs ½ regular aspirin
50-100 lbs 1 regular aspirin
over 100 lbs 2 regular aspirin

DRAMAMINE (Dimenhydrinate):
Dramamine is an antihistamine that works well at preventing motion
sickness in both cats and dogs. This drug works best if given at least ½
hour prior to travel.
Dramamine Dosage
ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENTS:
Are helpful in the treatment of small wounds, bites or minor infections.
Always thoroughly clean the wound with soap and water first.

ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP:
Can be use to clean any wound or injury.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE:
1 – 10 teaspoons given orally can be used to induce vomiting in dogs.
(See toxicities.) Never induce vomiting unless being directed to by a
veterinarian. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially
posionous substance, call the Animal Poison Control Center at
888-426-4435. Hydrogen peroxide is not as effective to clean wounds as
antibacterial soap and water.

NASAL SPRAYS:
Saline nasal spray and pediatric nasal sprays (Little Noses) can be

There is quite a bit of controversy about
cross color breeding great danes and I need to make it CLEAR that there
are no RARE colors of great danes. . . only correct and incorrect
colors and markings. There are simple explanations of why other
colors are produced and there are MANY "breeders" that will try to
pass off certain colors as "rare", "Hard to find" or some how
"special"--EVEN "Designer" ----remember--- correct or incorrect.
Period.

It is my belief that
breeders should not PURPOSELY produce incorrect colors, every breeders
goal should be to produce the most correct great dane possible, this
INCLUDES color. They should NOT be ostracized for unintentionally
producing incorrect colors either , recessive colors are in just about
every pedigree. Great Dane breeders ( that breed Harlequin, Mantle,
Blue or Black) that have not produced a recessive color are either LYING
or have not been breeding long enough.

There is a move to improve
some of the Great Dane color families by intentionally breeding to
colors out side of the color family in order to bring qualities that
are hard to find in to the color group. This is commonly done with Fawn
great dane sires bred to Blue or black great dane bitches. This is
not for the faint of heart and you need to realize that you have now
introduced a color in to the family that will be there for generations
to come. This is how you produce ( through recessive genes) Fawn and
Brindle danes with dilute masking ( from the dilution gene) and
brindles that are dilute in general, chevrons being a blue color instead
of the acceptable black.

In Harlequin great dane
family breeding you can have even more variation. Instead of having
harlequins with black spots (correct) you can have them with blue, fawn
or brindle spots-- same rings true of Mantle color pattern, instead of
the black and white "classic" boston marked great dane you can produce
fawn, blue and brindle blanketed danes with white markings of various
degree's.

Fawn and Brindle Great Dane breeding:

This is the strongest color
group and most popular. They do very well in conformation ring and
breading is fairly simple. Fawn can be bred to fawn, brindle can be
bred to brindle and collectively they can be bred to each other. In the
past the only concern (other then health related ones of course) was
the amount of Shading on fawns, the chevron patterning on brindles and
the presence of the masking gene. Both Brindles and Fawns can be born
with or with out a mask and can have different variations in shading and
pattern. It is possible to now test for the masking gene and identify
weather or not a dog truly has a mask ( with brindles it CAN be hard to
differentiate the difference in pattern and masking). A simple swab
test now lets you know at a genetic level.

Blue and Black Great Dane Breeding:

There is a VERY small
breeding group of "quality" blue and black great danes. This is why so
many of the top breeders have used fawn and brindles in there pedigree's
to increase gene diversity and to add qualities that are hard to find.
As a whole the quality of this color group is increasing with time and
we are seeing more and more quality blues and blacks in the ring
today. It is also possible to check for the presence of the "blue"
gene ( which is a dilution gene that dilutes all pigment including nose
and eye color) this test is a simple check swab.

Mantle and Harlequin Great Dane breeding:

Harlequin breeding is not a
"true" color breeding. This means that if you breed a harlequin great
dane to another harlequin great dane you will not get a litter of all
harlequins. Harlequin genetics is complicated to say the least and most
times only 50% of the PARENT colors will be represented in a litter
and of that there is a great deal of variance. The more correct the
parent dogs are the greater the chance for correct colors in a litter (
or so the thought is. . .not always the truth) The preferred breeding is
Mantle to Harlequin but it is also acceptable to breed to black danes
that do not carry for other colors, harlequin to harlequin or mantle to
mantle.

Harlequin to harlequin breeding comes with a
double negative. You can produce double merle puppies ( puppies that
carry 2 copies of the merle gene) and enutero you can have double harl
puppies ( puppies that carry 2 copies of the harl gene) these puppies
will never be born because the harlequin gene in a double form is a
lethal gene, causing the puppies to die enutero . Some great dane
breeders also breed harlequins to merles, but again, you are increasing
the chances for double merle puppies.

I have intentional left out
piebald and white in the possible breeding pairs. There are even MORE
reasons to not breed to these color patterns.

A common question among dog adopters is why are adoption fees so
high? Shouldn’t adopting a dog be free, or at least super cheap? To
these people I say, remember, you get what you pay for.

When you purchase a purebred from a dog breeder you may be paying
anywhere from $500 to over $1000 for your new puppy, but often that’s
all your getting for that cost. When you adopt a dog from a shelter,
your adoption fees are going to pay towards the cost of care your
adopted dog has received while at the shelter. Which is why adoption
fees are often adjusted based on the age of the dog your adopting. Here
is a breakdown of what a good shelter has already put into your dog
before you even adopt.

Spay & Neuter

The average cost for veterinary care varies greatly depending on your
geographical location (city vs. country), the size of the dog requiring
care, as well as their overall picture of health and how it influences
the complexity of treatments. That said, the average dog spay or neuter
can range from $45-$175 for an animal shelter. However, this doesn’t
include the cost of pain relief
medication that the shelter will also be responsible, which is another
$10-$30 dollars. If you were to get your adopted dog spayed or neutered
on your own it could cost you anywhere from $200-$500 plus depending on
said variables.

Shots

The cost of intake vaccinations for dogs to prevent Distemper, Parvo, Kennel Cough
as well as rabies can cost approximately $40 for the animal shelter, if
not more. If your adopted dog has been in the shelter for a few months
they’ve most likely received a monthly booster to keep them safe from
shelter related illness. If you were to pay for these vaccinations
yourself you could be paying anywhere from $20-$150 dollars.

Parasite Treatments and Preventatives

Monthly flea tick and ear mite
treatments as well as heartworm preventives for dogs are another
monthly cost for animal shelters. De-wormer medications are often given
preventatively as oppose to waiting to see evidence of worms. These
treatments can cost approximately $10-$30 assuming that no labs are
need. Lyme disease and heartworm tests are also another cost the shelter
will incur to ensure that your dog is in good health. If a dog tests
positive, Lyme disease treatment can cost anywhere from $20-$100
depending on the size of the dog. However, if a dog needs to be treated
for heartworms the treatment can be extremely costly, and on average it’s at least $1000 if you were to pay for it yourself.

Microchips

A good shelter will not allow their animals to leave the premise
without first being microchipped. Although a lot of pet owners insist
that their adopted dog will never get lost, but shelters see it happen
all the time — whether it be as a result of a natural disaster or an
unfortunate accident. The cost for a shelter to microchip their animals
is approximately $20. However, the cost to microchip your dog on your
own can range anywhere from $45-$60.

Food, Shelter and Comfort

The cost to feed a dog for a month in an animal shelter can range
greatly based on the resources of the shelter, but a general ballpark
estimate is round $40-$60. This does not include special diets for dogs
that need weight loss
food or dog food for specific digestive needs. Then there are toys,
treats, bedding, and other necessities that the shelter provides.

Extreme Conditions

If your adopted dog is on anti anxiety medication, eye drops,
or other antibiotics the shelter will try to recuperate the cost from
the adoption fees as well. This also includes X-rays, echo cardiograms
and other specialized treatments. This means part of your dog adoption
fees will go towards animals that need additional care even if your
adopted dog was lucky enough to have a clean bill of health.

Extras

Some animal shelters will provide you with a bag of food to go home
with so you can slowly adjust your new dog to they brand you’ve chose to
feed them. Collars, ID tags, and leashes may also be worked into the
adoption fees. If you’ve adopted a puppy or a dog that was transferred
from one region or shelter to another, the cost for the transportation
might be added into your dog adoption fee.

Remember most of these non-profit organizations do not receive
Federal or State funding. The dog adoption fees make caring for the
animals in the shelter possible. More often than not the regular
day-to-day operations, the cost for animal shelter
agents, veterinary staff, etc. gets paid for by the shelter’s ability
to fundraise and acquire donations to keep themselves afloat rather than
through adoption fees for animals.

Dogs
love to munch away on grass, and some even make it part of their daily
routine. Fortunately, most experts believe it isn't something you should
worry about. So why exactly do they gobble up that green stuff in your
yard?

Scavengers 'R Us

Dogs, unlike their catty counterparts,
are not carnivores. But they're not like your garden-variety omnivores,
either. For tens of thousands of years, these opportunistic scavengers
have devoured anything and everything, as long as it fulfilled their
basic dietary requirements.

The modern dog, partly because of
evolution and domestication, is no longer like its ancestors, which
frequently ate their prey entirely, including the stomach contents of
plant-eating animals. Instead, dogs today seek out plants as an
alternative food source. Most commonly the plant is grass -- since that
is what is closest at hand -- but wild canines are known to eat fruits,
berries, and other vegetable matter, too.

Clearly, dogs can find their nutrients in
a wide range of plant foods, but that doesn't explain why Fido usually
throws up after eating grass.

When the Tummy's Grumblin'

A dog will seek out a natural remedy for a gassy
or upset stomach, and grass, it seems, may do the trick. When ingested,
the grass blade tickles the throat and stomach lining; this sensation,
in turn, may cause the dog to vomit, especially if the grass is gulped down rather than chewed.

Although dogs don't typically graze on
large amounts of grass like a cow, they may nibble on grass, chew on it
for a while, and not throw up (an unwell dog will tend to gulp the grass
down in big bites and then throw up). This may be because they find the
texture of the grass palatable, or just because they need to add a
little roughage to their diet.

Nutritional Necessity

Whatever the reason may be, most experts
see no danger in letting your dog eat grass. In fact, grass contains
essential nutrients that a dog might crave, especially if they're on a
commercial diet. If you notice that your dog has been munching away on
grass or houseplants, then you may want to introduce natural herbs
or cooked vegetables into their diet. Dogs aren't finicky like cats,
but they're not too fond of raw veggies either. They're kind of like big
furry kids that way.

So, when you think about it, grass
munching isn’t that bad at all. However, watch out for a sudden increase
in grass eating; it could be a sign of a more serious underlying
illness that your dog is trying to self treat, and that requires
immediate veterinary assistance.

You may also want to buy a small tray of grass just for the dog, or start an herbal home garden.
This will give your poor pooch an alternative to the outdoor grass and
landscaping, the eating of which could lead to accidental ingestion of
pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals that have been used to treat your
(or your neighbor's) yard.

He'll love, tho'he is unloved,

And he'll serve tho'badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away
The times when he's abused.
Altho' his heart may break in two
His love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog
An understanding Soul!

When your dog looks at you with those big sad eyes, is he guilty or
is he just aware that you're angry with him? And can animals, on their
own, develop a sense of guilt for what they do to other animals? We take
a look at a few experiments that examine these questions.
When
we talk about "guilt" applying to animals we are looking for two things.
The first is that the animals knows some action is wrong. The second is
that the animal cares, even a little bit, about doing the wrong thing.
The favored animals used for experiments in this kind of thing are dogs,
because they are on hand, and because the years that their owners have
spent training them to recognize some behavior as deserving of praise
and some behavior as deserving of censure. This makes the experiment
conducted on them just a little bit sad.
Not too sad. A series of
experiments was done on dogs and their owners. First the dogs and
owners were put in a lab room. The owners walked out for a time and came
in again, greeting the dog as they did. This established a basic
procedure. Next the dogs were shown that, though food was placed on a
table in the room, they were not allowed to eat it. Only their owners
ate at the table. That established a rule.
Next were two tests.
In the first, the owner put a piece of food on the table and left the
room. The dog could eat the food or not. In the second, the food was
left by the owner, but taken by a researcher, and the dog didn't get a
chance to eat it. When the owners came back in the room, they were
either told that the dogs had eaten the food or hadn't, regardless of
whether the dog had or not. Then they either scolded or greeted the dog.
The
first test was on the owner. Could they tell if their dog had eaten the
food? About seventy-five percent of owners were right. Researchers
thought, though, that this might be as a result of their knowing their
dog's previous behavior. If a dog steals food every chance it gets at
home, it won't act too differently in a lab.
When scolded, both
groups were equally as likely to act guilty. So far it looked like dogs
had no sense of guilty. However, during the third test, when the dogs
weren't even given a chance to eat the food. The ones who had eaten the
food before were more likely to act guilty when being greeted by their
owners than the innocent ones. This could be interpreted as evidence of
guilt, or it could be interpreted as having learned that food plus
returning owner means scolding, while innocent dogs may have had no idea
at all why they were being scolded in the first place.
In the
end, we can't know what goes on in an animal's mind. There has been some
research that shows that animals have a sense of morality. One
researcher noticed that rats, when showed that whenever they ate an
entirely separate group of rats were shocked with electricity, didn't
eat even when they were hungry. Others documented that wolves seemed to
be extremely gentle with weaker wolves when playing, and would make
amends - by stressing that they were only playing - when biting too
hard. Which situation do you think is correct? Which do you want to be
correct? And - are you a dog owner?
The Underdog Club

A group of everyday heroes gives hard-to-place shelter dogs—the
“old, ugly, and unpopular”—a marketing makeover and a shot at a forever
home

The Underdog Club recently came to our attention and we quite simply
fell in love with this band of creative individuals and their mandate of
marketing the “ugly, old, and unpopular” dogs out there in need of
homes.
The club, begun in April, 2007, bills itself as the first-ever dog
marketing agency, an apt description if ever there was one. A
non-profit, volunteer-run organization, it helps “client” rescue
organizations and shelters in Montreal, Quebec, promote their
hardest-to-place dogs—in short, “the old, the ugly and the unpopular,”
as the club calls them, though Kristin McNeill, the club’s Director, is
quick to assure us, “We lovingly, and with humour and compassion, place
dogs into these categories!”
Currently comprised of a small and dedicated group of about a dozen
people who use their specific skills to get these underdogs some
notoriety and keep the organization running, it is a lean team of
dedicated dog lovers using their disparate talents to help the most
unfortunate dogs out there get a second chance. They’re a bit like
Cinderella’s fairy godmother, really. By day, they are writers, editors,
photographers, graphic designers, artistic directors, accountants, web
masters, fundraisers, and translators. By night? An inspiration.
Employing newspaper columns, the web, events, and a hefty dose of copy
writing and design savvy, they get the word out; to date, they have
helped over 250 hard-to-place dogs find forever homes. This is a feat in
and of itself, of course, but takes only adoptions into account;
there’s also the club’s contribution to education, rescue dog visibility, and fundraising for operations and behaviour modification. Pretty darn cool if you ask us.
We asked McNeill a few questions about the Underdog Club.
What inspired the creation of the Underdog Club?
A compassionate and supercreative woman
named Fern Breslaw started the club. She was working in one of Canada’s
top ad agencies and knew that so much of our ability to love something
is about how it’s packaged and presented. Her idea was simply to package
and present “undesirable” homeless dogs in a way that made them look
special. It was really an exercise in applying to these sad cases the
same marketing that works for any product.
How do you choose the dogs you feature?
While certainly not a science, we remain committed to sticking to those
dogs whose appeal is more hidden. We promote those who fall into the old
category, those in their last years of life. We once
featured a dog who only had a few weeks to live. Someone read
his story and gave him a loving place in which to lie by the fire
and live out his final days.
We also concentrate on the unpopular, those dogs who suffer
from stigma associated with a specific breed, like the Pit Bulls,
Bull Terriers, Rotties. We believe there is almost always a good
dog underneath the behaviour (and yes, we feature the biters!)
and we’re into promoting the idea that people can work to correct
the dog’s behaviour versus euthanizing. We also see many
sad cases of dogs with disease or physical deformities.
And last, the “ugly.” A take-off on the Clint Eastwood film [The
Good, the Bad, and the Ugly], this is a category in which we use
much leeway, because we don’t really believe any dog is ugly!
We’ve helped promote hugely obese dogs. We’ve featured dogs
with crooked legs, hump backs, dogs with allergies that leave
their skin red and raw…
Why should someone adopt a dog? And why
should they specifically consider an ugly, unpopular,
or old dog?
We fully believe there is an abandoned dog who will fit nicely
into any home. Walk into any big shelter or peruse any good
rescue website, and you can pretty much find the dog you are
looking for—there are that many abandoned or puppy millcreated
dogs out there. Have allergies? Don’t like big dogs? Love
black, short-haired dogs? Looking for a canine companion that
fits in a purse? You can find them all in a shelter or rescue.
Why consider an old, ugly or unpopular dog? So that they can
have a shot at a better life. Look, we’re all going to be old one
day, some of us may be ugly, and we’ve all been unpopular at
one time or another, but that doesn’t make us any less worthy
of love. Well, these dogs are like us: heck, we can’t all be fancy
purebreds or fuzzy little puppies. These dogs are often forgotten
or ignored in rescues and shelters with little hope. We think that
just ain’t right!

I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she
read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.
