Letter to the Senate re: Ron Wyden's Farm Bill Hemp Amendment

We are a (very rare!) 100% Made in America clothing company. We use Hemp but it's illegal to grow here so we have to import it from China. We'd much rather support American farmers. Legalizing Hemp (a non-narcotic, industrial crop), is a no-brainer. Please add your support to the Hemp Amendment. It could solve many economic problems.

I am writing to ask that you please support Senate Amendment 2220, which will be offered by Senator Ron Wyden to the Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2012, S.3240. Senator Wyden's amendment will empower American farmers by allowing them to once again grow industrial hemp, a profitable commodity with an expanding market.

The cultivation of industrial hemp will be regulated by state permitting programs, and will not impact the federal government's long-standing prohibition of marijuana. The language of the amendment mirrors that of a bill introduced in the House this session, H.R. 1831. That bill can be found here on THOMAS.

If you or your staff would like to learn more about this important agricultural issue, the latest version of the Congressional Research Service report, Hemp as an Agricultural Commodity (January 19, 2012 - RL32725), provides a thorough overview of this issue.

The report can be ordered from the CRS or it can be downloaded from the National Agricultural Law Center here. Please also consider watching the video Controversial Crop from America's Heartland, which is produced by KVIE in Sacramento, California.

To date, thirty-one states have introduced hemp legislation and seventeen have passed legislation; nine (Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Vermont and West Virginia) have removed barriers to its production or research. Adding this amendment to the farm bill would finally allow these states to choose whether or not to let farmers grow industrial hemp.

I would specifically like to know: Will you support Senate Amendment 2220, Senator Wyden's amendment to the Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act, which will allow for state-regulated hemp farming in the U.S.? What is your position on supporting farmers in the U.S. having the opportunity to once again farm this valuable agricultural crop? What did you, or your staff, think of the CRS report and the video?

Cleaning up the Clothing Industry

As is, the clothing industry is a big, disasterous mess. However, the NRDC's Clean By Design program offers some hope, on a major level. The National Resources Defense Council is trying to clean up the clothing industry.

To us, this demonstrates that demand from the people for ethical business practices is being heard, and we are simply ecstatic about the masses becoming more educated and less apathetic about how their clothing is made.

As a small, sustainable clothing company, we've been pushing for this kind of change for over a decade, but it'll take the big guns to really reach the masses. Glad to see the demand for ethical business practice is finally reaching even H&M, Target, and The Gap.

Congratulations to all the people who are taking their education of the issues to do the right thing. We have all the technology we need to fix the glaring problems with this industry. Let's roll up our hands and get to it!

Rayon is BAD

"Developed and manufactured by DuPont as the world's first synthetic fiber, it is made by from liquefied wood pulp. Unfortunately, turning wood into rayon is wasteful and dirty, because lots of water and chemicals are needed to extract usable fibers from trees. Only about a third of the pulp obtained from a tree will end up in finished rayon thread. The resulting fabrics usually require dry cleaning, which is an environmental concern as well as an added expense and inconvenience.

Much of the our rayon sold comes from developing countries, such as Indonesia, where environmental and labor laws are weak and poorly enforced. There is mounting evidence that rayon clothing manufacturing contributes to significant forest destruction and pollution in other countries." (Thanks, Animal Liberation Front)

I've actually seen clothing companies try to greenwash it by saying since its made from wood pulp, it's an eco-friendly fabric! Couldn't be farther from the truth, it's incredibly toxic. Maybe they just haven't done their homework, or maybe they're trying to pull one over on their customers.

Remember, DuPost is part of why Hemp was made illegal in 1937. The chemical lobby wanted Hemp shut down because it provided too much competition, since they were developing nylon and the like. Hemp is non-narcotic, amazing fiber and we want to be free to grow in for our clothes! America still has some work to do...

This is Richard Hayne, President and CEO of Urban Outfitters. He’s also a supporter of Rick Santorum and donated over $13,000 to him. He’s against gay marriage and abortion.

His company pulled a pro-gay shirt back in 08, they also blatantly ripped off an Etsy designers work, featured a t-shirt for women that said “eat less” and most recently had a card with a “tranny” slur on in.

He also owns Anthropologie and Free People.
