Oscars 2012: Hugo beats The Artist in nominations, sci-fi and fantasy again sink to sound and visual categories

NOMINATIONS for the 2012 Oscars have been unveiled - and they include some big surprises.

But predictably - and perhaps with justification in some instances - the sci-fi and fantasy films were either excluded or relegated to the sound and visual categories.

In a recent poll I asked Geek Files readers which of the nine films under consideration for a visual effects nomination should make it to the final five.

Your top choice was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, followed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and - tied in fourth place - Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Captain America: The First Avenger and X-Men: First Class, and then Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Hugo and Real Steel.

The Academy chose to put forward Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Hugo, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Of course, I'm disappointed that the undoubted finesse and character focus of the X-Men revamp didn't get a mention somewhere but not entirely surprised, as superhero films are usually shunned; even The Dark Knight was nominated only for sound editing and Heath Ledger's supporting actor performance, though it did win both.

The final Potter film also earned nods in make-up and art direction while Michael Bay's third Transformers action film was also named in the sound mixing and sound editing categories.

Spielberg's computer-animated, motion-capture film The Adventures of Tintin earned just a nomination for original score.

Martin Scorsese's Hugo - his first animated feature and his first film in 3D - leads the way this year with 11 nominations, one more than the hotly-tipped, highly-acclaimed The Artist with 10.

The other films in the best picture list are The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse.

Final Fantasy creator to speak about new game The Last Story at MCM Midlands Comic Con

WORLD-FAMOUS game designer, director and producer Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, will be attending the MCM Midlands Comic Con in Telford on February 18.

He will talk about his career and latest project - Nintendo's acclaimed The Last Story for Wii - ahead of its UK launch next month.

Sakaguchi is not only the father of the Final Fantasy franchise but has produced a host of top titles including Lost Odyssey, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts.

His newest game, The Last Story, is an epic tale that sees the player take charge of a band of mercenaries as they explore and battle their way across Lazulis Island, the heart of an empire riven by strife.

It's released in the UK on February 24, and Midlands Comic Con will give fans the opportunity to find out more about this game from the man who created it.

New story details for The Amazing Spider-Man explain role of Oscorp and Lizard

SONY'S back-to-the-beginning relaunch of its Spider-Man franchise arrives in UK cinemas on July 4, 2012.

But, aside from a change in actors and director, just how will The Amazing Spider-Man differ from the three films we have already seen?

A few clues were provided when producer Avi Arad spoke about the film and explained the emotional links between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and the ultimately villainous Dr Curt Connor (Rhys Ifans).

We now have an even better idea of the storyline thanks to an official synopsis from the studio.

Billed as "a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy" and "an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story", it reads as follows:

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).

Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets.

As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner.

As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, the Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Found-footage chiller Grave Encounters gets over 20 million hits

FOUND-FOOTAGE movie Grave Encounters has attracted more than 20 million hits for its trailer on YouTube.

Metrodome, which is releasing the film on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on April 23, said it was delighted with the "staggering" online interest in the horror flick.

Written and directed by The Vicious Brothers, the film sees Lance Preston and the crew of ghost-hunting reality TV show Grave Encounters shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena have been reported for years.

They voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera.

But they soon realise the building is more than just haunted - it is alive and has no intention of ever letting them leave. They find themselves lost in a labyrinth of corridors, terrorised by the ghosts of the former patients.

With their sanity slipping away, the crew begin to discover the truth behind the hospital's dark past as they tape what could well be their final episode.

Ed Brubaker's and Sean Phillips' Criminal series is the rarest of treats: a comic that I can count on showing up in the library a couple weeks after if comes out. Like clockwork. And it doesn't seem to matter what city I'm in. Sure enough, there's a copy of Criminal: Last of the Innocents in my hot little hands. Except, this isn't your normal installment of the franchise.
