HTC trolled by Nokia on twitter!

We posted recently on how Nokia trolled Samsung on twitter. Right now Nokia Russia has trolled HTC on twitter. HTC Russia recently asked it's users to share how they use their phone during the deep winter in Russia.

Nokia somehow saw the tweet and reacted quickly. They replied to the tweet by saying "Easy Use" along with a picture of 520 being used by an user wearing gloves meaning it doesn't matter when you have the right device with you!

As you know, the super sensitive touch in Windows Phones helps users to use their phones even while wearing gloves. It's pretty useful during winter especially in Russia right? Watch out this video '127 seconds, if only this guy had a Nokia Lumia' by Nokia explaining how important super sensitive touch is after the break.

Nokia recently has won many patent claims against HTC in many countries and this adds more spice to the battle even if it's on twitter. We should really appreciate the quick wit by Nokia to respond accordingly to the tweet. We should conclude that Nokia really knows to play its card well!

Lumia Black rolling out for Lumia 920 and 820 users in India,some users facing errors while updating! [Updated]

It seems Nokia is rolling out the Lumia Black update for Lumia 920 and 820 users in India. Lumia Black is a firmware update for all Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices. Head past the settings and check whether update is available for your phone.

But, don't be so excited. Unfortunately most of the users weren't able to successfully update their phones to the newer version as most of them faced an error code 80188309 while installing.We checked on our phones and we end up in the same error. Many of our members in our Official Facebook group got the same error while updating. When we googled( oops,'bing'ed) the error, we found that we are not the only people who got the error.

Only a few lucky users where able to install the update. Most of the users, including us ended up with an error when the installation reached 94-98%. Unfortunately the Lumia Black availability page still shows the update as 'Coming Soon' for Lumia 920 & 820.

We are not sure about what the error is.We have contacted Nokia India from our side and are waiting for their response. We will update the post as soon as we gather more information. In the meantime stick with us and stay updated regarding the news.

Update 1.(02.01 AM IST):-
The issue is being reported worldwide. Remember,we had the same issue when Amber update was rolled out. Some users received only GDR2 from Microsoft and they didn't receive Amber update from Nokia. Here in this case, we assume that users are getting only the Lumia Black update. ~~But it's still a mystery how some users managed to update their phones.~~ No more assumptions, we will wait for Nokia team to address the issue. We will have to wait till morning as it's pretty late in India. Stay tuned!

Update 2.(14.06 PM IST)
The mystery is solved. Only users who have GDR3 developer preview preinstalled on their phones were able to update their phones. Others who were on Amber ended up on the error.On Microsoft Forum,they announced the issue was fixed. Still Indian users who are running on Amber are not able to download. Check out the thread on Microsoft.Forums.

Quiet Hours app for Windows Phone lets you to silence your phone on schedule allowing the user to sleep without any disturbance of notifications,calls,etc.The feature of controlling the volume of the ringer via an app is something new and intuitive.

The features of the app are:

Using it you can schedule when you want to turn silent mode on or off*.

Do it manually in application.

Or use toggle tile on main screen and turn mode by single click!

Due to the Windows Phone limitation, background task can be run only once per 30 minutes, so the scheduler won't be able to set Sound volume at exact point of time.Also an in app purchase needs to be done, if you want to use scheduler. The UI is not the best we have seen.It's a simple app and we didn't find any major bugs. Overall the app is worth a try.

AlarmMe, a beautiful alarm alternative for Windows Phone

AlarmMe is a beautiful minimalist alarm alternative for Windows Phone. The app fuses Modern UI and colorful design elements to give you a unique viewing experience. It's way different from the traditional stock alarm present on Windows Phone.Unlike the other alarm apps, the app doesn't doesn't need run off in the background and it's great.Though we have handful of quality photography and weather apps on the windows phone store, we haven't seen much Alarm apps in the store. Trust me, its a perfect app and is worth every penny. The minimalist approach and modern UI makes it unique among other Alarm apps.

On your first run, you will be greeted with a tutorial.The tutorial is nice and teaches you to use the app perfectly. After the tutorial you will land on a page which has a radial dial. Simply slide on the dial to change the time and double tap to set the alarm. You can add multiple alarms and can also name them intuitively. Tap on the gear for more settings. The app also has the ability to pin alarms as live tile to your start screen.One thing that I loved is the background image of the app. It's pretty awesome and is dynamic. It will change according to the time. Like the cities will be lit up if it's night(PM) and if it's a day(AM) you will see a beautiful sunny day. It's beyond explanation(I can't really explain it!) and we recommend you to give it a try. Regarding the usability, no more explanations as the tutorial does its job pretty clean.

Talking about the stability of the app,we found no major lags or glitches.We have been using the app for a while as we were part of the private beta of the app. We tested it on our Lumia 520,620,720 and 920. It worked perfectly on these devices. You might find some small bugs as the app is till at its early stages.Hats off to the developer for it's clean and modern UI. We have been in touch with the developer for a while and he gave some hints regarding the future updates. More tones, 24 hour system option,bug fixes,coupons for users and beta testers,etc are some features of the upcoming updates. Let's not stress much on these right now as we will cover more about these on future posts. Right now, use the app and let us know if you find any bugs and we will let the developer know regarding your feedback.

The app(12 MB) is available at Windows Phone store at a price tag of RS.55($0.99). A trial version of the app is also available, which is fully functional but limited to a single alarm. Buy the app, if you want to show your support towards the developer.

Federal Bank India has launched an app called FedBook,a convenient and secure mobile passbook for your Federal Bank Account. Federal Bank already has an mobile banking app FedMobile but this app keeps you updated with real time transactions without the need of phone calls or SMS. The app also has options for adding tags and personalized remarks for transactions. But please do note that you need your mobile mobile number to be registered with Federal Bank for FedAlert or FedMobile facility.

The app is quite useful when you are on the go and is much easier than the traditional way of going to the branch and updating passbook.The UI is good and we didn't find any bugs. 4Blend is a new photography app arrived on Windows Phone store recently.The app is designed to create HDR images and uses Nokia Imaging SDK along with multi-layer HDR algorithm. The innovative multi layer HDR algorithm in the app enables users to capture better photos in even low light conditions.

The app takes three images of the same scene at different exposure levels and combines them into a image

having greater dynamic range.Though the feature is good,it needs the phone to be kept still.The app also has voice command settings that enables to take pictures by holding the phone steady without pressing capture button. 4Blend has various effect filters to make your image more better. It also has controls similar to Nokia Camera including gamma levels,ISO,exposure,focus,etc

There's an inbuilt tutorial, but it's not the best available if you compare with tutorials present in Nokia's photographic apps.

For people who have voted for file manager and Candy Crush we have some good news. File manger is coming to Windows Phone soon and so is Candy Crush. Regarding Ragnarok Mobile, Tango,Line and Social Cam we have no news so far. But we will try to contact the developers soon and will let you know the news at the earliest.We posted about BBM recently and it is coming to Windows Phone early 2014. VLC Player has been confirmed by us long back.Check our old post from here to know about VLC player. Many of our readers have asked about Google apps like YouTube and Google Chrome and our answer is negative. We have no news so far regarding native Google apps for Windows Phone and we don't think Google will support Windows Phone platform in the upcoming months. We are bit surprised that Google Chrome reached top 5. We expected Google Maps to be at the top 5! May be you guys really love HERE Maps and are satisfied with it.As the community grows, we hope that Google can't ignore WP platform and let's hope for the best.

If you have a Lumia 920/925/1020 Pureview phone, most probably you are already enjoying the functionality of the Nokia Camera app. But as of today, all other Lumia device owners can use the Camera app.

Nokia Betalabs released Nokia Camera Beta for all Lumia devices (Nokia Lumia 820, 720, 620, 625, 520).

Nokia Camera Beta brings the Nokia Camera application to all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices, and with future releases will bring the latest and greatest bug fixes, improvements, and functionality. Nokia Camera Beta can be used in parallel with the commercial Nokia Camera application that is public in the Windows Phone Store for Pureview Lumia devices. And you can set Nokia Camera Beta as your default camera, so that it starts up with the hardware shutter button.

Path and BBM coming to Windows Phone soon!

Windows Phone platform was far behind Android and iOS regarding popular apps. We are forced to say 'was' (instead of 'is') because more and more popular apps are coming to Windows Phone platform. Recently a lot of popular apps like Instagram,Waze,Flipboard (announced,not yet released),etc arrived on Windows Phone. 2K13 was indeed a great year for Windows Phone users.

We have some good news to you guys regarding two popular apps, Path and BlackBerry Messenger.

Okezone reports that Path, a popular social networking-enabled photo sharing and messaging service will arrive in a matter of few days. It was said by Anvid Erdian, product manager of Nokia Indonesia during the official launch of Lumia 1020 in Jakarta on December 9th.

"Path will soon be present (on Windows Phone). Soon. Wait time is it,"said Anvid without giving any clue regarding the release date.

When asked about BBM, Anvid said, "We present the application of fame and see if the application is much in demand by the public. And we see enough fuel demand, there is likely to be present in the Windows Phone.” .The statement somewhat confirms the arrival of the Cross chat application to Windows Phone platform. BBM which was once exclusive to BlackBerry users made its way to iOS and Android recently. Recently Nawzil told us that BBM will arrive on early 2014. These all news fits in well and we hope the app to be available by Jan 2014.

If the present momentum goes on, Windows Phone platform won't be complained regarding the app availability. So Google apps are the ones which we miss badly. We hope that Google can't ignore Windows Phone more as it is gaining popular day by day.

Nokia offering Lumia to a Samsung user who got his Galaxy S4 fired!

It seems Nokia is playing the game nicely.Nokia USA is offering a Lumia to Richard Wygand who recently got his Samsung Galaxy S4 fired up during charging. The issue got some attention recently when Richard posted about the issue in social networks.

On contacting Samsung, they agreed to replace the phone but they wanted him to remove the video and to agree with their terms. Richard wasn't happy with the terms and watch his video explaining the terms and the letter from Samsung by him after the break:

It seems Samsung wants silence from his part and wants to cover the issue secretly.But the issue is no longer a secret! His Youtube video has now surpassed over 6 lakh views. Nokia somehow came to know about the situation and wants to show him how 'CUSTOMER SERVICE SHOULD REALLY WORK'!

These all features will truly help users and supporters to keep in track of their parties and leaders.

Popular Messenger app Telegram coming to Windows Phone in January 2014

Telegram, popular messenger app has announced on twitter that a Windows Phone version of the app will be released on January 2014. The app has currently apps for both iOS and Android platforms. Telegram for iPhone was launched on August 14th this year followed by an Android version on October 20th. The app was well reviewed and accepted on both the the platforms.

Telegram is an IM app like Whatsapp, but it differs a lot in certain features.Telegram is cloud-based, decentralized and heavily encrypted.As a result, users can access messages from several devices and store an unlimited number of photos and videos in the cloud.The app is ad-free and has an open API and protocol free for everyone.Read out the following list about main features of Telegram:

Strata Review - The King of Puzzles is here on Windows Phone 8

Strata is a puzzle game from Graveck Interactive famous for their games like Jump Dewds! and Skee-Ball on Apple's iOS. Good to see a highly acclaimed developer making its way to the Windows Phone 8 Platform.

Strata is a unique puzzle game that has a perfect combination of simplicity , elegance and challenge.

Gameplay-

Puzzle consists of squares arranged in a grid which have a unique colour. The goal of the game is to strategically layer coloured ribbons in rows & columns to match the pattern of coloured squares. As simple as the rules are, the challenge lies in matching the top most ribbon with the same coloured square underneath it which becomes cumbersome as the number of grids increase.

Tutorial does an awesome job of setting out the rules of the game within a short span of time

The game starts with 2x2 grid but the number of grids increase as you progress. If you manage to complete the level without reversing your move, u get a 'Perfect' award as shown in the picture above.

Getting a 'Perfect' award requires a lot of forethought & you have to plan your strategy precisely as you don't get a second chance. Although, this can be mastered by playing the same level again

Design-

The design of Strata and its User interface is minimalist and simplistic as the Metro UI (Oops Modern UI) of Windows Phone. There are no distractions in the form of advertisements or any mindless interruptions. The transitions while swiping the ribbons are smooth. The UI consists of 3 icons- Hints, Restart and Back.

Audio-

The most striking feature of this game is the background audio which starts when you swipe the ribbon. The tempo builds up as you swipe a layer of ribbon, which fades away if u stop swiping for too long. If you make a wrong move, there is a bummer tone. These little audio changes have a pleasant effect while playing.

Number of levels-

The game is divided into 6 sets - Entwine, Flourish, Persist, Sundry, Prodigy and Harvest. There are a massive 396 levels in total which will take hours to complete. There is no in-app purchasing, all the levels are available when you buy the Full game.

Performance-

The game was reviewed on Lumia 920 which has 1GB RAM. There was no lag or crashes whatsoever. Although, there is a minor bug which occurs when you press back button rapidly when you are at Set 5 or 6.

The puzzle game which gets its basics right. Simplistic design & impressive audio coupled with massive number of levels, this game is a must buy in case you love puzzles. The game cost Rs.160 ($3). But not to worry, you can try the game before purchasing. Click the link here.

Instagram for Windows Phone rumored to launch within this week

With 150 million monthly active users, Instagram is one of the biggest social photo sharing app service. So, the unavailability of the Official app on Windows Phone platform makes it difficult for many smartphone users to make the switch from iOS or Android platform.

Nokia started a campaign on 4^th March 2013 to bring Instagram Official app to Windows Phone platform with an app #2InstaWithLove which allows Windows Phone community to speak directly to Instagram and the Instagram community in a way they can respect…through the use of beautiful photography.

Windows Phone developers like Daniel Gary and Rudy Huyn did a great job by developing third party apps like Instance and 6tag using reserve engineering of the iOS app codes which allowed Windows Phone users to upload images on Instagram servers. These app weren’t 100% legal, but Instagram team didn’t object. So, these apps gave some hope to WP users. Then came Hipstamatic Oggl app with the release of Nokia Lumia 1020 and subsequently to other Lumia devices which allowed us to upload images to Instagram timeline legally. But the app didn’t allow browsing our Instagram Timeline or like/comment..

But at last, Nokia announced in Nokia World 2013 that the official app is finally coming to WP store. But they didn’t give any timeline for its arrival. Today, we got a tweet from Nazwil that the app will launch in the month of December 2013. But then after sometime, Nazwil reported back again with an apology that the app is releasing within a week.

Nokia Refocus app released for select Lumia devices

Nokia released the Nokia Refocus app which is a Lytro-style app for its Pureview devices. You capture an image using Refocus app and it takes the shot. The amazing bit is that you can tap anywhere on the captured image to focus on that area. Basically you don't have to worry about focusing the image before the shot is taken you can tap to focus later and get the amazing shot.

The samples of the app are included below, just tap on various areas of the images to see how it works.

Here is my attempt with the Refocus app on Lumia 920.

This not only simplifies how you take a photo, but also gives us endless editing opportunities.

Sami Niemi, Nokia’s director of Capture & Relive software product management explains,

Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date Rumor

Our reliable source Nawzil brings us another big news related to Windows Phone 8.1. This isn't an official news, but most of the information from Nawzil till date have been quite accurate.

As Microsoft have already confirmed that all Windows Phone 8 devices will be compatible for Windows Phone 8.1. He tweeted that Windows Phone 8.1 will be released to all current generations of Windows Phone 8 devices by Q2 2014. And before that Lumia Black will be released in Q1 of 2014.

Lumia Black update won't be as large in scope as the Nokia Amber update. They include an enhanced form of Nokia Glance, the utility that will allow Lumia devices to boast individual notifications. The update will also include a new step feature for health conscious users. When this feature debuts in 2014, some Lumia devices will surface the amount of steps taken within a given time on Nokia Glance. Lumia Black update will also include the Windows Phone 8 Update 3 which Microsoft team developed for all Windows Phone 8 devices. Details on the Update 3 is included here.

Nokia building another Windows RT Device, But this time its 8 inch tablet

When it comes to tablet market, iOS and Android still owns the major share. Windows RT is stil a niche. Other than Microsoft and Nokia, all other OEMs stopped developing for Windows RT. But even Nokia and Microsoft are developing ARM tablets for 10-inch size. We heard some rumors that Microsoft will release a 8-inch Surface sometime in 2014.

Today a reliable source of information @evleaks leaked that Nokia is building an 8-inch tablets under the codename "illusionist"

Nokia is fully committed to the Windows RT platform. Nokia Lumia 2520 is a monster device when compared to Surface 2. Very little is known, but it won't be shocker if the 8-inch tablet uses Qualcomm chip set for its 8-inch device.
