Party Planning Tips: Become an Entertainer

If you're throwing a kids' party you know the importance of entertainment. Keeping everyone's attention takes planning, and if you're not careful a whole lot of money. But there's no need to splurge on expensive activities when kids are just as entertained with creative cost effective solutions.

Here are a few suggestions on how to entertain on a budget:

Become a clown. Not really though. But go to a second hand store, buy some crazy clothes and learn how to face paint. In my experience kids don't really care if the face painting is expertly done, it's fun even when the designs are indescernable.

Bribe your neighbors into helping. Is the guy next door good with kids? Have him come and lead the kids in a game of kickball in exchange for some great cupcakes. Or set up an obstacle course out of cheap hula hoops and chairs, and give that great neighbor of yours a whistle. The kids will love it.

Utilize the dollar store. There should be no need to explain this. Unless you've never been to the dollar store, in which case, go there now.

Garbage can be fun too. Reusing things like 2 liter pop bottles and cardboard boxes can be a dream come true for kids and your wallet. And you can do cool stuff like this:

Pop bottle sprinkler.

Or this:

Bottle bowling.

Or this:

Cardboard party with a train, rocket, airplane, and more.

And what kid wouldn't have fun with any of those cheap party ideas? I certainly can't think of any.

Party Planning Tips: Keep to the Schedule

After spending all the time and effort to plan and set up a gorgeous party don't let it fall flat by letting your guests get bored. Have a realistic schedule of events so your party can run smoothly so your guests are happy, and you're not stressed about wondering how to entertain everyone.

The number one rule when setting a party schedule is to make sure it really is realistic. Don't cram too many events into one party, nor plan too few. If you're planning an activity you've never done before, don't just assume the amount of time it will take. Putting some real thought into the timeline can make your party run much smoother and won't leave you with awkward gaps of boredom or unfinished projects.

Here are a few other suggestions to keep in mind:

• If you're having a dinner party, make sure to include enough time for everyone to arrive and do a bit of socializing before the food is served.

• Kids activities can take longer if there are a lot of kids participating, and kids don't really like to wait for their turn, so you might want to plan two activities in the same time slot.

• Having a few easy "if we have time" activities you can throw in will save you if for some reason your timeline is running much quicker than planned (especially at kid's parties).

• A schedule of events doesn't need to be extravagant - it could be something as simple as: 6:00 drinks, 6:30 BBQ burgers, 7:15 friendly game of cards. It's simple, yet it will keep anyone from asking, "What now?"

Hopefully setting a schedule will help your next party or event go off without a hitch, and will keep your stress levels a little lower!

Party Planning Tips: Separate the Kids and Adults

When you're planning an event that will include both adults and children things will run much more smoothly if there are designated children areas, and somewhere else for adults to gather. These areas don't need to be at opposite sides of your house or anything drastic (unless you want to), but getting that separation will help everyone enjoy the party more.

If you're hosting a dinner having a kids table is a grand idea. It let's the adults eat and interact without having to cut anyone's meat, and it also lets the kids goof off a little without driving anyone nuts.

Birthday parties for young kids is fun, but it usually involves parental involvement. This doesn't mean that there can't be designated areas. Set up kid seating on one half of the room, with adult sized chairs on the other half. That way all parents can be close at hand but still get a chance to have a little separation.

Big events like block parties or family reunions definitely need separation, but they'll also require
more planning. Setting up activities in each area that are fun, easy, and age appropriate will keep everyone happy and busy. Let's face it, the biggest challenge to keeping adult and children areas separate is keeping the little ones distracted and having a good time, so plan on doing just that.

Next time you're planning an event, keep these ideas in mind. You'll want your guests (and yourself) to have a good time, and I think a big part of that means letting the kids be kids and the adults be adults.....just not in the same space.

Grease Proof Cupcake Liners

I don't know how many times I've found adorable cupcake liners, only to have them become completely overwhelmed with the color of the cake and the grease soaking through. So when we found a company that made greaseproof liners, we HAD to get them!

The liners have been available in our shop for a couple weeks and we finally got a chance to try them for ourselves this past weekend.

Using an assortment of liners and a chocolate cake mix, we made the cupcakes as usual. We decided to use chocolate because it is the darkest cake and hardest to keep from overwhelming a cute liner. In the future we want to try it with white cake, spice cake, funfetti, and all sorts of other kinds.

Some of the greaseproof liners stood up to the chocolate cake better than others, but all of them were amazingly better than the non-greaseproof liners we tried. And the results will definitely be different for lighter colored cakes.

Here is a cupcake that has a regular cupcake liner:

See how the orange only shows at the top, and the bottom is greasy?

Now here's a greaseproof liner:

Those were made, cooked, and handled exactly the same. Amazeballs, right?

So, the conclusion of our cupcake experiment is that greaseproof cupcake liners are supremely awesome. Check out the ones we have in our shop (because we'll probably be getting more now).

If you have multiple kids, you know how hard it can be to celebrate each party with a huge (and expensive) celebration. But if your kids are like mine, they're going to want that party for EVERY birthday or celebration. Starting a fun family tradition can help make it feel like a party without having to go crazy with guests and decorations.

Family traditions can come in many different flavors. Some can be tied to your own childhood memories or be inspired by a cultural or religious affiliation. And some traditions can be thought up, right on the spot, with no good reason other than it just seems like fun!

Your traditions can be as extravagant or small as possible. Just make sure that they are helping you with your goal - making it a celebration without excessive fuss and money. When your kids know that they get to do something special for their important day, it will set the stage no matter the size of the cake or the amount of guests present.

Here are a few traditional suggestions that might help you come up with a few of your own:

• Have a special dinner. Your family is going to have to eat anyway - let the birthday kid decide what to have.

• Make a special hat that only comes out at birthdays (or baptisms, or graduations, etc.). Each child can have their own hat, or the family can share one as long as celebrations don't land on the same day for multiple people.

• Have a celebratory "throne". Grab a chair at a second hand store and decorate it to the nines - then pull it out when there is cause to celebrate.

• Have Grandma come over. If you have family members that can only visit a few times a year try to plan events or celebrations around them. Just seeing them will make it feel like a party.

• Give a special gift that only happens on special occasions. It could be a certain kind of collectible that is only given at birthdays. Or you could have a traditional family gift for graduations. Kids can look forward to this for years, if it's good enough. :)

So now it's your turn. What traditions can you come up with for your own family? While big parties for all occasions is fabulous - remember that happy memories are not always about the number of people, the brightness of the decor, or the tastiness of the appetizers.

No party is complete without snacks and goodies. And no matter the type of party you're planning, there is one universal food that can go with pretty much anything - CUPCAKES.

These are the reasons why cupcakes are so 100% party worthy:

• Cupcake are super easy to make. I am horrible in the kitchen, really really horrible, but even I can't mess up a cupcake. You don't have to worry about the centers falling in, or if they'll be the right shape, and even frosting can be applied by a total novice. What's not to love about that?

• Cupcakes require absolutely no cutting before serving. Just throw them on a table, and your guests can eat at their leisure.

• Cupcakes can come in any flavor imaginable: cherry, coca cola, keylime pie, peach, chocolate, cheesecake, butterfinger......need I go on? ANY FLAVOR, I tell you.

• Cupcakes can be classy. We're not talking about your run of the mill, every day, kid birthday party, buy at Walmart, type of cupcakes here. We're talking about GOURMET cupcakes that not only taste fabulous, but look like a million dollars. Check for local bakeries or specialty cupcake shoppes - you'll be surprised at the exquisiteness that is the cupcake.

• Cupcakes can be cute. A cupcake can set the stage for all your cute birthday, baby shower, or any fun get-together. By using cupcake liners, or printable cupcake wrappers, you can have adorable cupcakes that match any theme.

• Cupcakes can cater to all people. Some of your guests hate chocolate, and some would die if fed white cake - so you have to make both. Setting up for a party can take some time. Not to mention you need to look presentable yourself. So here's a tip - pretend that the party starts earlier than it does. If you give yourself a goal to be ready half an hour before the guests arrive it will leave you time to deal with unexpected delays and let's you relax for a minute.

No matter how well you plan, it's not uncommon to have something surprise you while you're setting up for a party of any kind. You may have forgotten something, something might break, or maybe you're stuck in traffic on the way to the venue. These kinds of things cause stress, but will cause less stress if you know you have a 30 minute buffer.

Even if your setup and preparations go flawlessly you'll still enjoy the extra time to kick back and relax before your guests arrive. A calm and relaxed host is going to have (and be) more fun than a frazzled mess of a person. And the best hosts want to enjoy the party as much as their guests, right?

Party Planning Tips: Choose a Theme

With so many party options available it's easy to get overwhelmed. So the first step you should always consider when planning any kind of event is picking a theme.

Party themes don't have to be cheesy.

It's easy to decide on a child's party theme; just ask them what they like and go with that. But what if you need to plan a swanky get together? Deciding on a theme will help pull things together and making decisions about decor, food, music, etc, will be so much easier along the way.

Here are some ways to pinpoint the perfect party theme:

• color palette - you'd be surprised at what the right colors can do for you

• seasons - it doesn't need to be summer to have a indoor garden party or beach themed dance party

• favorite characters - this one is pretty obvious, and can probably apply to any child with a television

• travel locations - Parisian party anyone?

Party themes don't have to be expensive.

If it's in your budget then go all out for your party. But how many of us have unlimited funds to throw the party of our dreams? And just because you have settled on a theme doesn't mean you have to sell a kidney to accomplish it.

Here are some things to consider while purchasing themed party supplies:

• Printables are a cheap way to cover your bases. You can print as many as you need, and get creative with their application when you don't have much else to decorate with.

• Snacks can double as decor. When you plan snacks on the theme, you can worry less about how you adorn it.

• Pick your top five most important party items, and only buy themed supplies for those. Whether it's invitations, a cake, decorations, or goodie bags - if your key elements are on theme you can be more relaxed about the rest.

Custom Birthday Zebra Banner for Triplets

This banner was for triplets. Two Girls and 1 Boy. The mother didn't want it to girly for her little man but still wanted it fun. So I went with the square shapes to go with the zebra instead of the normal flowers that I usually use. It was around Christmas time so she went with Red and blue to match her Christmas decorations.
