Custom barn wood signs

I have made a lot of barn wood signs in the last couple months. If I would have known how popular they were going to be I would have bought so much more barn wood. We have since then had to replenish our barn wood supply several times. Our newest creation came from a collaboration from the customers vision and mine.
This sign is my favorite to date....but I say that every time:)

Hand Lettering

I started a new venture this week that I am so incredibly excited about. I have for the last couple years focused on rustic type signs such as barn wood signs and reclaimed wood signs. I love to paint so much and I love a challenge even more. I have decided to start to make hand lettered signs. Which is pretty much what I already do but these have a totally different feel and are much more complex.
Here are a few examples of the signs I am talking about:

10 tips for a successful online business!

TIP #1: WEB PRESENCE:
Obviously to run an online business you must have a website to start. Wheter you running from your own site, Etsy, Storenvy or even a blog. There are always ways to maximize your web presence. This is key with a website the more sites you have the easier you get found. Things to consider: Opening social media accounts, Facebook, twitter, Pinterest are huge and even Google+. You may already have these accounts but are using them? Are you engaging the customers? If you want social media to work for you, you have to give a little. Yes you can make friends pretty easily on these sites but if you want to make an impression you need to get involved. One of the biggest ways to gain followers and to get people to share your content is by sharing and following them. People appreciate that you share their content and they return the favor. Sharing is caring!
TIP#2 NETWORKING:
Take time each week to read through some blogs and social media sites and sincerely comment, subscribe and read. Look for people who share interests with you and that engage you.. This tiny fun effort can pay off BIG TIME. People appreciate when you take time to read there posts and they will return the favor most of the time. Do this as an effort to make friends not to just get more readers and comments. That is the key sincerity....
TIP#3PINTEREST:
Pinterest is one of the most used social media sites. Make boards based off of keywords for your business so when people are searching in google your boards show up. Make one for each catagory. Also pin and re-pin other people boards and pics. Follow people and comment and they will also return the favor.
TIP#4 KEYWORDS:
Make sure your keywords are working for you. Are you using keywords that are relevant that people are even searching? I will be doing a more in-depth keywords post in the next couple days if you are all interested. Keywords should help target your customers, you want keywords that attract customers not just people passing through. For our business we sell mason jar chandeliers that we custom make. For the first few months I was stumped on how to advertise or use keywords. After we sold a few I relized we were selling to people who where mainly remodeling there kitchens. I used that info to make some awesome keywords and it worked!
TIP#5 SUCCESS IS AN ATTITUDE:
Are you confident in your business? Do you expect to be a success? If you don't then you need to back track and find your mojo. If you are expecting your business to fail then it will, if you fear the worst and it happens you are going to abandon ship. Do you know the reason why most businesses fail??? They give-up to quickly because there hearts are not in it. If you are in business to succeed you will find a way to do so. Be all in and expect your business to succeed and nothing will stop you.
TIPS#6 NEGATIVE NANCI'S:
You are going to run into a customer or someone who is negative trust me, the key is not to let this person define you. Let me tell you story....I make signs and I was extremely busy in October shipping signs. When I finish a sign I put the packing label on it so I know where it goes. Somehow, this was a one and only thing 2 signs got switched and they went out to the wrong customers. They had received the other person's sign. The first customers said "no big deal" and she returned the sign and I sent her sign. The other customer was not so happy, she wrote me a very long email on how unprofessional that was and how my business is going to fail. I agreed with her it was unprofessional but it had never happened before and I it will never happen again. Her nasty email hurt me at first, no one wants to hear that there business sucks! But I wrote her back and apologized, I explained to her that it had never happened before and I would do anything to make it up to her. She never wrote back....The point is she has no idea who I am and how I run my business, she was judging off what she knew and that wasn't much. In turn I don't know what is going on in her life, and for me to get upset with her would be useless. You can't make everyone happy, but you can try and when you have at least have tried you feel better about yourself. Don't let anyone ever define who you are, only you can do that and if you do mess up you can change in a instant. So never ever get down on yourself it does nothing. No what you need to do is feel the best you can about yourself it will in turn reflect out and others will see that in you.
TIPS#7 TO BLOG OR NOT TO BLOG??
I recommend to have a blog, I don't care if you only post once a month it is an important thing to have on the net. I use my other business blog to display my items and showcase them. I talk about how we make things and what we are doing. My blog generates more traffic to my website than anything else. The older and more relevant your blog becomes the better. For online business it is important to blog!
Tips#8 ENGAGE:
No matter what account you are on, facebook, blogger, pinterest, twitter... etc. You gotta think like the reader or the customer. Do you really want to see ads of what you have on sale all the time? I know I don't. I made this mistake in the beginning and posted only info about my store, but I noticed no one cared. Well of course they don't. It takes people at least 3 times of seeing something before they will even notice it. This is because we are always going and running mainly on auto-pilot(or our subconscious). It is like the tree in the yard you just noticed that has been there the whole time. When you engage you are asking people to step out of the ordinary making them use there brains and come out of that auto pilot mode. Think of thought provoking questions that are related to your business. Post things that people are interested in. You can't deny a funny video, people love a funny video!

TIPS#9 FIND YOUR ANGLE:
Ok so you are almost done with this article, what you can do next is sit down and find out what makes you unique and use it. There are so many online stores out there how do you get recognized?? First off you need to be yourself find out what makes you unique. Ask questions, ask why you sell, what you sell and why you opened a store. You need to do some leg work for yourself, don't just copy other peoples ideas create your own. We all spend countless hours reading other peoples materials ( which is fine) but if you can come up with your own unique angle, it is worth more than gold! It is like a picture, you can take 100 decent pictures and get people to share them a few times or you can take one a amazing photo and it is shared millions of times! Be unique, be yourself, find your angle
TIPS#10 NEVER QUIT!:
keep learning, keep growing and keep pushing never give up if this is your dream. The person who succeeds is the one that never gives up. I know that seems a little crazy, but I a telling you read about peoples success stories. Most of them started out broke, they pushed through all the negativity and keep going until they made it. Most people are to afraid to fail so they never even try but this is what causes people to never succeed either. My favorite thing to tell people, Edison failed almost 10,000 times when trying to invent the light bulb, and he said he learned 10,000 ways to not make a light bulb. But the one way he did learn has changed history. You may not think what you are doing is that important, but it should be. This is your life and anything that makes your life better should be your top priority!

New trends for 2014 show that accented colors are in and the brighter the better, I am in I love a pop of color with some beautiful neutrals.

Ok so these colors are for a rustic cottage kitchen. I believe in white walls, white floors even white cabinets ( too much?) and using accents to color the room. Flower, plants, tiles rustic furniture pieces, colored mis-matched china and even a chalkboard wall. White washing is so easy and can be done on so many mediums.

Moved to Storenvy and why I recommend never joining Etsy!

I have been with Etsy for quite a long time and I am not the one who likes to rant but, after the week I had with them I am left speechless...well I guess not quit:) I spent almost a year putting every waking moment I had into building my store,brand,advertising ,products, etc, etc.... To receive an email this weekend from Etsy that they where suspending my store. I was blown away as I sell a lot and never have any issues. I was told that our items looked so good that they suspected we where resellers and, they needed proof that we actually made all our products. Well I can respect that, they are upholding the integrity of the market. I spent a day preparing an essay and photos of our work areas, supplies a vendors and processes. I even offered to skype them if all that didn't convince them.

I waited oh so patiently and the email came.....

"Thank you for all the information you sent us, we are proud to have you in the Etsy community. I will reopen your shop as soon as you pay your bill. Please pay and then email me back to reinstate your account."

I had waited to pay them (is that bad) because I wanted to find out what was going on:)
So I paid and emailed the nice lady back and I got ......crickets.....I emailed a few hours later......crickets....I decided to be patient and wait I figured it would be opened in the morning.

All the next day nothing. So I emailed once more and then I got an email about 3pm saying my shop
"was closed with out warning"

HUH!!! I thought they where proud of me??? at this point I am pretty well, PISSED!

I start emailing, lots and lots of emails and with absolutely no responses back.

I have tried a few other times to get a response but, nada!

So I was left with nothing, I went from having a steady stream of income that supported my family to nothing!
On top of that! Watch how people panic when your store disappears!
It is insane, I do not blame them I would probably panic to. But I have had to write 40 customers explaining what is going on and that everything is the same we just aren't etsy anymore.

What a lovely experience, but hey you live you learn right. I hoping that I can spread my experience not to knock etsy because there are a lot of successful shops on there, hell I was one of them, but I am not entirely sure how long that is going to last. I think they have changed some things and it may bite them in the butt...So anyway that is my story take it as you will. Now on to the good part.....

Storenvy!!
I will be honest I have been hesitant about making a full switch, but it is something I wanted to do for a while..
Here is the scoop:
- There shops look better
- You have complete creative control of your shops look
- They are FREE ( I was paying on average $400 a month for Etsy)
- Friendly and quick support
- resources for there community
- Love the dashboard
- Love the overall look of the marketplace
Everyone just ROCKS there! I kind feel like I fit in better there:))

I was even looking for a new template and found one, the store Craftywidgets . He lets you try his templates before you buy, so I gave it go! I had some trouble installing...Operator error.. so I emailed him. Well has offered to do the install for me! That is crazy nice:))

People say there views are not as great but I beg to differ. All it takes is a few days advertising and you will see a change. I have just as many views on there as etsy and they will only grow because I just made the switch. It is all what you want and what you put your energy into that is what you will get out of it. So don't be afraid of it if you need any help, EMAIL ME! I love helping and well I kinda have tested the waters so I know some short cuts:))

Oh did I mention I already made my first sale!!!

Oh we are almost there! Spring which is one of the biggest seasons for weddings! I have been itching to make some new wedding signs!
This sign was made from 150 year old wood!!! That is crazy but I have some:)

Ok I made a beautiful wedding sign this fall for a wedding, I don't think I showed it off but it is one of my favorites and there where some nice pics taken of it as well!

DIY handmade business...Become a successful business owner!

We all have seen the boom in the handmade marketplaces, people all over the world our jumping on the band wagon of entrepreneurship and I think it is going to be what saves our economy. I may be jumping to conclusions but with the decline of college grads snagging careers in there chosen fields this is something that lets anyone who has the dream to jump aboard. Now I think people think this may be something that is fairly easy to do and I would say no, not easy but it can be incredibly fun and rewarding with a little attitude adjustment anyone can be a success.
What do you need to start your business???
First and foremost you must have the desire to want to start a business, with out this you are dead in the water with no fuel for your boat. Your desire is what drives you and keeps you going. Do you know why most businesses fail??? They give up to quickly. Yes there are trouble and there will be things that you do not like, but if you can't overcome these things you will never learn and grow into the business you want to be. I have been open about a year and half and I have made plenty of mistakes and with in those mistakes I have learned sooooo much and that will make me that much more confident the next time a problem comes up, or will prevent a problem from happening all together. If you want to do something bad enough then you will take the ups and the downs and go on. Do you know how many times Edison failed before he invented the light bulb? 1000 times!
That is the same with most successful inventors they didn't have an idea do it once and succeed, no they failed a lot but the difference is they kept going. So if you want to do this you must keep going!

Next you need to find something that you are really good at, everyone has something they are good at and you do to. We all do, we all do something better than someone else you just have to find that thing. Whether you are crafty or are great at giving advice , if you have a skill there is a need for that skill.Pick the skill, develop the skill as much as you can, this creates confidence in your work and someone who is confident in there work WILL sell it.

Where do you sell?? Well there are so many places and opportunities online to sell these days, you don't even have to have any real capitol to start. I started my business with nothing, yep that is right nothing! I had just moved and I was pretty down and out, this was last hope to do something amazing and I decided it was all or nothing. I started on Etsy and grew to my own site and now I put my stuff everywhere I can because, it means more exposure and it works you may not see the effects right off the bat, or maybe you will be it all that effort does come back around.Any effort put out will definitely come back to you in a good way. Online it is so easy to go viral all it takes is a video or a good picture or an article and your stuff can be spread like wild fire through the internet.

Becoming successful is a state of mind and being pessimistic will not get you where you are going, you must believe in what you are doing! You must also be ALL in! What do I mean by this?? It means you are willing to make up your mind and decide that you will do what it takes to make this succeed. Now that may sounds a little scary, you know there will be obstacles but most of them come an go and disappear with out much effort.

Ok here are some down right good info to making your business GROW....

First where ever you decide to sell here a few options that I have tried and liked:

www.Etsy.com ( starting out this is the whiz-bang! This is the best for immediate traffic and you could be selling as soon as you open your new shop, if you have the right keywords in place, I will talk more about that below)

www.bigcartel.com ( I loved this place it was least expensive and I got a lot of views but I didn't sell as much here, but that does not mean you won't. I did a girls blog who sold on here and had many sales daily)

www.sqaurespace.com ( I love this one also and I got great views, there wasn't any paypal for payment which some of you may like and design was a snap)
www.shopify.com( This is my current home and I love the ease of everything, they have a lot of apps to help make your store appear very professional, my views where not right off the bat great but I changed up some keywords and with average views I make A LOT of sales! )

www.Storenvy.com ( I love this one also it is completely free and I get a lot of views but have not sold anything, there are folks who sell lots of stuff on here, it all comes down to research who is shopping here)

The proof is in the pudding!
Do research with other similar products/services this is going to give you a real life example of what you can do and the best place to do it at. This also gives you something to expect in your own business if you service/products our comparable then you to can be sitting in the same boat. Don't let competition discourage you,let it inspire you knowing that you will just as great! Plus there are A LOT of folks in the world and more each day, you will never lack an abundance of customers you just have to see it that way:)

Keywords
I am not a keyword or SEO guru I have done my research and found what works for me.
I find that 5-7 good keywords per listing/page is all you need for fantastic search results
If you have no clue what I am talking about you here are some good tools for quick and
easy research, because I must stress this is important.
www.wordtracker.com This is a week free trial and it is all you really need to the research. I used it and it helped my site SO much. They explain what you are looking for and make it easy to quickly pick tons of great keywords for your site.
Keywords don't work immediately for traffic give them about 2 weeks to work there magic and you will be seeing an influx in traffic if you have done your research correctly.

Social media
Social media is your friend and you can use it to make your products and service go viral...use these avenues and you will see some amazing results!
www.facebook.com ( create a page invite some friends, encourage your friends to share your page. Kick backs are always good incentives if you can offer something free people will love you and be happy to share!
www.pinterest.com ( people love a pretty picture, make sure you are taking good pictures and you can post, post, post and people will repin, repin, repin fanstastic source for traffic)
www.blogger.com ( I love blogging, create blog and share your day to day life with your business post product ideas and support others, good info is worth a lot)
www.opensky.com( something I just discovered it is a like a store on social media and it is CRAZY awesome I have got a ton of traffic posting my items on her. I always link back to my main store though for more traffic.

There are many more social media sites out there and each one that you put your stuff on is another chance of a sale! Do not think that what you are doing is not bringing you any return because one day soon you will find people flocking from all these sites.

Ok so that is my adivce for all you new entrepreneurs, I hope to hear that you are all successes!

I always love making signs and learning what words and quotes mean the most to people. Every sign has it's story and a meaning for it, the design will correspond with the receivers personality. I am sharing my secret recipe for the best homemade gift that you can give. This is an all natural scrub that is so simple and easy and you probably have the ingredients to make it right now!

Olive oil
sugar (white or brown)
lemon juice

Now please don't laugh at how simple this is because this scrub is the BEST! You have to try it! This is what this amazing homemade scrub can do..

Do you have issues with acne or break outs minor or major?? I do after I had my kiddos I sometimes get breakouts. I have searched everywhere for something that works and this is the only thing that keeps it under control. Why? you ask? Because this stuff has olive oil in it and most people think that pimples are caused by oil?? Yes and no, when we use chemicals on our face like acne treatments it dry's out our skin and thus causes wrinkles early...no wrinkles please. This method destroys your skin, and ages it faster. Our skin need oil and all around balance. Olive oil has been used for 1000 of years by the beautiful people to keep there skin firm, supple and radiant. Olive oil actually protects your skin from dirt and nasty stuff from getting in your pours. The benefits of olive are amazing and this is why I use it everyday on my skin and why I put it in this sugar scrub.

The sugar of course is the exfoliate the dead skin and if you happen to get some in your mouth it makes it taste good:)

Lemon juice is awesome also, it clarifies your skin and even skin tone, this bit of lemon juice is enough to keep your skin feeling fresh and clean with out over drying it.

This Christmas season if you are stuck on a gift, give them a big batch of this stuff. People love it even men. I have had men begging for this scrub. We who live in the north suffer from dry skin all winter and this scrub keeps you glowing all day!!

A gift that makes an impact!

We are fast approaching Christmas and I couldn't be more excited! My favorite thing to do in my business is brainstorm ideas with customers for there signs that will be gifts for people that they love.
I am always amazed with the quotes and phrases that used. They always reflect the feelings of the giver. Some are loving and sweet others are funny and outrageous but they are all made for one reason and that is because they care.
When I first started making signs I had no idea some of the impacts I would make in peoples lives, I didn't realize what a beautiful thing sign making could be. I have made signs for weddings and anniversaries business and friends even funerals and one of my favorites was a letter written by a women who passed from cancer. Her last words to her family where painted on the sign to hang and remember forever.
I love what I do so much and I always find myself becoming friends with the customer because we are making something together that is so personal.
Signs really and truly are one of the best gifts you can give and they are fit for anyone. There is always a quote and saying, song or words that is so meaningful for the person, always.
Words are just so meaningful. The define our lives when we speak them.
I have had so many orders this year for signs and I am excited to be able to make a gift that will make an impact to the person receiving it.
I wanted to write a little post about how words affect our lives and how they make an impact.

Did you know that everything is made of energy even words when you speak them, that is why they can affect us so deeply. Someones says something negative to us and it goes to the core of us making us feel terrible. My father use to tell me your words are like a double edged sword it penetrates into the soul...which is from the bible and it is so true. I remember I was in the 6th grade and I said some choice words to little friend of mine. He sat me down and told me those words will never go away in her mind.

Also when we put something in our home it has an energy on it so say you had a sign made from me, the sign would bring it's own vibe into your home and the sign would either make you feel good or bad...hopefully good:) This is what feng shui is centered around bringing things and arranging things in your home to bring you the most joy. It is amazing how when our home is messy and then we clean it how much we feel better, it is energy!

When you put a positive statment on someones wall that makes them feel good they will look at everyday and make them feel WONDERFUL. Now when I started painting signs I didn't really know the power of words. But being able to really experience the emotion behind the words that people speak to one another is amazing thing.

I think and this is just my opinion, I think signs are one of the best gifts you can anyone!

YEAH I LOVE SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!! THIS IS DAY IS SO IMPORTANT BUT SHOULD REALLY BE SOMETHING THAT IS SUPPORTED ALL YEAR. SMALL BUSINESS IS WHAT SUPPORTS OUR ECONOMY NOT THESE MEGA CORPS, ALL THERE MONEY GOES OVERSEAS.
WE MAY BE SMALL BUT WE IMPACT SO MUCH AND COULD IMPACT MUCH MORE IF PEOPLE WOULD CHOOSE TO SHOP ONLY FROM SMALL BUSINESSES.
I UNDERSTAND THE CONVENIENCE OF SHOPPING AT WAL-MART AND I GET THAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN'T PROVIDE EVERYTHING WE NEED. BUT I THINK WE CHOOSE TO SHOP AT THE MEGA CORPS FOR THE EASINESS AND BECAUSE WE FEEL LIKE WE ARE SAVING SOME MONEY....I THINK THAT IS A MISCONCEPTION THOUGHT....

Flameless candle chandelier

It is finally complete and I am so excited about it! We made a hard wired flameless candle chandelier.
Thanks to the wonderful customer we allowed us to make this for her and Doug and mines creative engineering, we build the popular chandelier for less than half the price.
The chandelier sells for close to $2000. The flameless candles are pretty expensive so we decided to make them in house. The tray is made from reclaimed barn wood over 60 years old. I love everything about this chandelier and I think I want one in every room of my house!
