So back in the summer I started to aggressively play Nation States. I haven't really been sharing it with people. But here it is. I'm going to post some of the screen shots from it here from time to time. I'll highlight my favorite parts.

The Most Serene Republic of Sare3 is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Sare with a fair hand, and renowned for its anti-smoking policies. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 795 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Social Equality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Elora. The average income tax rate is 85%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Crowds of flag-burning protesters tend to accidentally become crowds of burning protesters, traveller camps regularly block five-lane superhighways, students are wary of colorfully decorated new teachers with names like Professor Pipsqueak, and the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller. Crime is totally unknown. Sare3's national animal is the Unicorn, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Opal.

Sare3 is ranked 2nd in The Island of Mythology and 8,976th in the world for Most Rebellious Youth, scoring 10 on the Stark-Dean Displacement Index.

Aristotle would say that the sentence "Jane is a great woman" cannot be decomposed to state that Jane is both great and a woman, since what it says is that she is great at being a woman. I would argue that nowadays the phrase can be decomposed, and what the conversational implicature states is that Jane is great and a woman and that the speaker is assuming her vagina is a handicap. We could avoid this by just saying Jane is great, if that's what we mean. Just saying.

If a lost child comes up to you and asks for help, you call the police and say comforting words to them while you figure out the situation. Why wouldn't you do the same for a lost dog? Instead of shouting at it to get out of here, speak gently to it. If it is friendly and offers you a paw the dog is most likely someone's "child". Help them get home...

Those of you who come here often, or subscribe via RSS will notice that it's been a while since you've seen me here.

As I mentioned on January 12th, I've been concerned that I'm on the wrong mediation. The lack of motivation that I've felt has been staggering. Even when I was at my worst I wanted to write, I wanted to connect to my friends. After a few weeks of taking that drug, I felt like didn't care about things anymore. The not wanting to write lead to a drop off in Songs of the Day. Not wanting to see how my friends were meant that I wasn't looking at stats updates, so no Facebook Revelations came out either.

So I went to the doctor yesterday and we switched up what I was taking. So it will take a few more weeks for me to see if this works.

Sometimes I wonder that I wouldn't do better dealing with these issues if I was talking to a professional than trying to attain better living through chemistry. It all comes down to money I guess. If I was wealthy, I'd be able to pay for a shrink and wouldn't have to forgo grocery shopping in favor of paying for my mediation. (To clarify: I am not starving myself to pay for drugs. I am simply asking my previous week's groceries to stretch a bit further).

The combination of poor mental health and poverty is difficult to deal with and there is no wonder that so many people cannot afford to make ends meet, or live with crippling debt. We are the 99% and life is hard down here.

I still have to stay on the lack of motivation drugs for a few weeks until the new ones kick all the way in. This might lead to fewer posts than usual...barring lately when ANY posts are more than usual...but I'm going to try to make more things happen here. Mostly because you're all still coming here. Lots of you.

So this is just an in-between kinda message for y'all. Letting you know what has been happening. I'm going to think about what it is that we need to see here and how I can make it happen.

On Monday Sarah was finally starting to feel a bit better. We watched several episodes of Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip. We both teared up as we watched the romances unfold.

On Sunday I realized that I'm on the wrong medication. While I no longer have the desire to not be here any more I have lost a lot of my other desires. Like writing and staying in touch with my friends on facebook. My anxiety is also not gone. I need to get this under control.

On Friday I went over to Barretts to have dinner with him and his friend Stephen. We ate and Stephen introduced me to the musical stylings of the captivating Lana Del Rey.

As I walked home through Parkdale that night I had her impressive and somewhat agressive ballad Born to Die in my head ,and it stayed with me long after I darkened my own door. What also stayed with me was the bone crushing loneliness that had permeated our evening.

On Thursday Sarah was still sick, but I had to leave her be for a few hours because my dear friend Victoria was back from Germany. I was elated to discover that she was home to stay. We made one of our famous smorgasbord feasts and watched movies. Things are better with her here.

On Wednesday, Sarah was still sick. Not just a little sick. But a lot sick. Deathly ill. I took care of her in the evening and we watched ABC's Once Upon a Time. Its such a pretty show and so full of hope.

I need more hope than I currently have. Way more. I'm just not my best me...that girl had hope.

On Tuesday Sarah came home really sick. She came up to my apartment and laid down on my bed, falling into a restless fevered sleep. I worried about her as I watched her sleep, but at the same time it felt nice to take care of someone. The niceness of feeling good about taking care of someone was soon eclipsed by a soul sick wave of loneliness. Will I ever have people to take care of?

On Monday I felt up to looking at my annual list of resolutions. I make mostly the same ones every year. There were somethings that I did well and some that were 100% epic fail. I need to be better next year.

Mostly I realized how much more I expect from myself than I have been achieving. I've disappointed myself. I need to be better.

On Sunday I worked to recover from my New Years Eve. Even though I hadn't drank too much and had spent the better part of the evening geeking out with some science fiction the end of the night was a little more hardcore.

I'd walked home from Barrett's through the darkened streets of Parkdale and was slightly disturbed to see a large black Lincoln car slow down beside me. I pulled my keys from my pocket in case someone was going to leap out of the car and drag me inside. Instead the passenger side window rolled down and when looked, I saw a fatcat with a cigar hanging out of his mouth. I realized that he was a John, crusing my nighborhood looking for a prostitute. I bristled, turning away from him. He drove on and I was left wondering if the emotion I should be left with was flattered or insulted. I continued home, dropped my coat and went down to Sarah's party.

I chatted amicably with her guests until one of them had a seizure, which put somewhat of a dampener on the party. I was relieved that it was only a seizure and not a symptom of an overdose of some kind.

As I went to bed early in the morning, all I could think about was the fight I had with my friend. It was something minor, but systemic. I've felt so alone, for so long. I think I was being passive aggressive because I feel abandoned.

So the first day of the New Year left me thinking about the year before, and reflecting on my misadventures on the last day of one of the worst years of my life.
