Based on Antonov's earlier An-124, the An-225 has fuselage barrel extensions added fore and aft of the wings, which received root extensions to increase span. Two more Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines were added to the new wing roots, bringing the total to six, and an increased-capacity landing gear system with 32 wheels was designed. The An-124’s rear cargo door and ramp were removed to save weight, and the empennage was changed from a single vertical stabilizer to a twin tail with an oversized horizontal stabilizer. The twin tail was essential to enable the plane to carry large, heavy external loads that would disturb the aerodynamics of a conventional tail. Unlike the An-124, the An-225 was not intended for tactical airlifting and is not designed for short-field operation.

It was the grandest sight at the air fair in Paris: the Antonov 225 is the biggest airplane in the world. Even larger than the new Airbus A380.

A gigantic roar of thunder arises as chief pilot Alexandr Galunenko powers up the six monster engines of the Antonov 225 for take-off. A total of 600 tons have to be airborne until the end of this runway. A sight that is particularily exciting with this Ukrainian flying dinosaur, because the double wheels below the nose of the aircraft are two meters up in the air quite fast. But the massive cargo hull with its 28 overscale wheels seems to take for ever.

"Albatros" would have probably been a good name for the largest Antonov of all times, the bird being notorious for its endless take-off procedures in the animal kingdom. Instead the engineers came up with the quite romatic nickname "mriya" when the AN-225 was completed in 1988 during the final heart beats of the "good old" Sowjet Union. "Mriya" meaning so much as "the dream".

Turning out to be nothing more than a dream was the attempt of the Sowjet Union to keep up with the United States in the international space race by building their own space shuttle called "Buran". In context with this project "Mriya" was built by hand to be able to transport "Buran" pick-a-back through Russia.

"Buran" is now for sale with a price tag of about 15 million US dollars as an exclusive space race curiosity. But "Mriya", the 13 year old "Russian dream" seams to have a future career again.

Just in time for the air show in Paris 2001 the Antonov design office in Kiew reanimated the huge steel bird that was awaiting its scrapping between thistles and dandilions on an airfield in Gostomel until then. "Borrowed" engines were returned, dismantled positioning lights screwn-225 oed back into place. Large scale tinkering that was worthwhile in the end. Because the Autflanked even the newest fighter planes at the show in Paris.

And it sure is no every day sight to watch such a supersized jumbo go down on its knees on command, open its giant muzzle and give way to a cargo bay that would comfortably house 80 passenger cars or eight double-decker busses or three train locomotives or if you prefer the complete hull of an Amercian Boeing 747, the biggest passenger jet of former days. How symbolic!

All of a sudden the American and European competitors looked slightly disgruntled: Airbus was at that time only offering a model version of its two story superjumbo Airbus A-380 for 800 passengers.

Experts have figured that an operational "Mriya" can not only carry about 100 tons of cargo more than the European jet from the drawing board, but could transport around 1500 passengers if tuned appropriatly.

At least the Europeans had some comfort, already being able to sell more than 20 of their future flagship to various airlines. And: the albatros Antonov will remain a unique specimen so far. Because there is a "small" market for airfreight weighing more the 200 tons from the space and the oil industry, but "Mriya" with a price tag of about 200 million US-dollars per plane is simply to expensive for a giant-freighter fleet.
In the alltime ranking list of airplanes the Antonov with its six engines, a span of 88 meters and a lenght of 84 meters nevertheless only takes second place.
Unbeaten on first place until today ist the legendary "Spruce Goose", a gigantic waterplane built by Howard Hughes with eight propeller engines for US-missions in the Second World War. The "H-4" was longer than 70 meters and had a wing span along which one could have organised Olympic sprint competitions: unbelievable 97,5 meters.

The giant bird however only went airborne for a testing period of about one minute and a distance of two kilometers.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement, and a tandem cockpit for a two-man crew. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra, and was first flown on 30 September 1975. The AH-64 was introduced to US Army service in April 1986.

The AH-64 Apache features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. It is armed with a 30-millimeter (1.2 in) M230 Chain Gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's forward fuselage. It has four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons, typically carrying a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rocket pods. The AH-64 has a large amount of systems redundancy to improve combat survivability.

The U.S. Army selected the AH-64, by Hughes Helicopters, over the Bell YAH-63 in 1976, and later approved full production in 1982. McDonnell Douglas continued production and development after purchasing Hughes Helicopters from Summa Corporation in 1984. The first production AH-64D Apache Longbow, an upgraded version of the original Apache, was delivered to the Army in March 1997. Production has been continued by Boeing Defense, Space & Security; over one thousand AH-64s have been produced to date.
The U.S. Army is the primary operator of the AH-64; it has also become the primary attack helicopter of multiple nations, including Greece, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands and Singapore; as well as being produced under license in the United Kingdom as the AgustaWestland Apache. U.S. AH-64s have served in conflicts in Panama, the Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Israel has made active use of the Apache in its military conflicts in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, while two coalition allies have deployed their AH-64s in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopter was co-developed by France and Germany. It is known as the Tiger in Germany, and Tiger in France and Spain. Helicopters delivered to the German and French forces vary in their armament and mission purpose. Germany uses the UHT anti-tank helicopter version, while France operates HAC anti-tank and HAP combat support versions.
The Eurocopter Tiger made it's maiden flight back in 1991, while the first production helicopters were built in 2002. France ordered 70 Eurocopter Tiger HAP combat support helicopters and 10 HAC anti-armor variants. Germany ordered 80 UHT support helicopters.
The Eurocopter Tiger is has a conventional gunship helicopter layout, with two crew members sitting one behind another. Unlike the most combat helicopters pilot sits in the front, while the gunner takes the back seat.
The HAP combat support version has been designed especially for the French armed forces. It is intended for a close-range infantry support and has a limited air-to-air combat capability. The Tigre HAP is armed with a 30-mm cannon, unguided rocket pods and Mistral air-to-air missiles.
The French HAD version has many in common with the HAP, but uses an uprated engines and has a better ballistic protection. It can carry Trigat anti-tank fire-and-forget missiles.
The UHT, developed for the German Army, is a multi-role fire support helicopter. It carries Trigat or HOT anti-tank missiles, as well as the unguided rocket pods. The UHT may also carry up to four AIM 92 Stinger missiles for a close range air defense. This helicopter lacks the chin-mounted cannon, however can be fitted with a 12.7-mm podded machine guns. This version also uses more advanced search and tracking devices, than the French model.
One more version of the Eurocopter Tiger helicopter is operated by the Australian Army. Designated as the ARH or Armed Reconnaissance helicopter and based on the French HAP design.
All Tiger/Tigre helicopters are fitted with missile approach warning systems and decoy launchers.

The new $4.5 billion Terminal 3 opened on 14 October 2008, and was built exclusively for the use of Emirates Airline. Concourse 3 is also part of Terminal 3, and is expected to be completed by 2012. It will be built exclusively for the Emirates Airbus A380. Terminal 3 is the second largest building in the world by floor space and the largest airport terminal in the world, increasing the total capacity of the airport to over 62 million passengers. The airport's capacity will increase to more than 80 million passengers annually in late 2012 when Concourse 3 opens.Further extensions to Terminal 2 are also currently being made. The airport revealed its future plans in May 2011, which involve construction of a new Concourse 4, for all airlines currently operating from concourse 1. Concourse 4 is expected to bring the total capacity of the airport to over 90 million passengers, and will be operating by 2018. The plan also involves Emirates solely operating from Concourse 1 along with Concourse 2 and 3 which it will already be operating.

The "X" in LAX

Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather stations at the airports. At that time, "LA" served as the designation for Los Angeles Airport. But with the rapid growth in the aviation industry the designations expanded to three letters c. 1947, and "LA" became "LAX." The letter "X" has no specific meaning in this identifier."LAX" is also used for the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and by Amtrak for Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

LAX handled 28,861,477 enplanements, the total number of passengers boarding an aircraft, in 2008. This makes LAX the third busiest airport in the U.S. in terms of enplanements. It was the world's sixth-busiest airport by passenger traffic and eleventh-busiest by cargo traffic, serving over 60 million passengers and more than two million tons of freight in 2006. It is the busiest airport in the state of California, and the third-busiest airport by passenger traffic in the United States based on final 2006 statistics. In terms of international passengers, LAX is the second busiest in the U.S. (behind only JFK in New York City) and 26th worldwide. The airport also claims to be "the world's busiest origin and destination (O & D) airport"in 2011 — i.e., the busiest airport as measured by the number of passengers who are not changing planes. The number of aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs) has steadily increased to 603,912 in 2011, up from 575,875 in 2010.
LAX connects 87 domestic and 69 international destinations in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. Its most prominent airlines are United Airlines (18.24% of passenger traffic, combined with United Express traffic), American Airlines (14.73%) and Southwest Airlines (12.62%). Other airlines with a presence on a lesser scale include Delta Air Lines (11.12%) and Alaska Airlines (4.74%).

In addition to these terminals, there are 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m²) of cargo facilities at LAX, and a heliport operated by Bravo Aviation. Qantashas a maintenance facility at LAX even though it's not a hub.
