In week seven I...

Worked on the most difficult picture I've drawn to date.
Captured some lovely Valentine's memories with ink and watercolor.
Created magnets and mugs for sale featuring my artwork from January.
Visited a friend's first art show, which further inspired me to pursue my own first show when I'm done with this series.

"Pop!" (Day 42) - When I started this drawing I didn't realize that popcorn was going to be the most complicated thing I've ever tried to draw. The thing about popcorn is that it's completely unpredictable....each kernel is unique, there's no repetitive shapes, no rhyme or reason.

"Spotted Beauties" (Day 43) - I already drew striped orchids for Day 35...it's amazing how similar, yet different these spotted ones are. I look forward to finding more orchid varieties to draw throughout the year.

"Unfurled" (Day 44) - My husband, Ed, bought me roses for Valentine's day....peachy pink roses just like the ones I had in my bridal bouquet. I captured this rose at the perfect moment, when the blossom was at it's peak of opening, the petals spread out displaying the entirety of this gorgeous bloom.

"Sweetness" (Day 45) - When Ed and I first started dating we lived together in Vermont for three years. I discovered Lake Champlain Chocolates there (which are hands-down the best chocolates I've ever had). Every year for Valentine's Day Ed buys me a heart-shaped box of Lake Champlain Chocolates, and it reminds me of the early years of our relationship, when we were in the process of falling deeply in love.

"Overlooked" (Day 46) - Sometimes the leaves of flowering plants can be as interesting as the flowers themselves. The leaves from my Valentine's Day roses were a bold green, with deep veins and feathered edges, and tapered to a point.

"Bouquet" (Day 47) - I'm glad I painted these roses before they faded away...the fresh blooms only lasted a few days. Part of what I'm really enjoying about this daily art series is that I'm capturing memories throughout the year. My Valentine's flowers may be wilted and the chocolates might be eaten, but my drawings will last forever.

"Tools of the Trade" (Day 48) - I went to a friend's art show on Saturday...his medium of choice is the Etch-a-Sketch (you can check his work out here). I was amazed at all the tiny details he includes in his etches. It totally inspired me to try to create a drawing packed with an abundance of miniature objects. Getting all this visual information on a 4" x 6" piece of watercolor paper was definitely a challenge!

Working on this series has definitely forced me to look more closely at the world around me, to find beauty and inspiration in the little things. Hopefully I've inspired you to take a closer look at the ordinary things in your lives as well!

No Day Without a Line: Week 6 Review

In week six I...

Reached the 10% completion point for this year-long project (I can't believe we're more than 10% through 2013 already, holy moley!)
Drew my 8th tree, 4th flower, and 10th produce still-life of the year...it's interesting to see which subjects I keep being drawn to.
Posted lots of art for sale in my Zazzle store.
Sold my first three prints from this series!

"Everyday Exotic" (Day 35) - Orchids are one my favorite flowers (and I'll probably draw/paint many of them throughout the course of this year)...as a child I thought they were special and exotic. As an adult, I still marvel every time I see an orchid plant for sale at the regular grocery store.

"At the Table" (Day 36) - Before our son was born I used to make an event out of dinner with my husband...meals cooked from scratch served by candlelight with cloth napkins and soft music playing in the background. It was our way to unwind from the day and reconnect with each other. I think it's time to bring that back (minus the candles...toddlers and fire don't mix well).

"The Roots" (Day 37) - We got our final winter share from our CSA on Wednesday...over 30 lbs. of (mostly) root vegetables. I'll miss getting fresh vegetables from our farm in the coming months while I wait for the regular season to start in June.

"February Sunrise" (Day 38) - It's been a few weeks since I got to witness a spectacular sunrise...so glad I woke up in time to see this one on Thursday!

"Insides Revealed" (Day 39) - It's always a gamble buying avocados...you can never tell if the insides are going to be smooth and brilliant green, or if there will be brown spots hiding beneath the dark exterior.

"Grayscale" (Day 40) - The world was white and grey during the snow storm on Friday, all color disappearing beneath a blanket of clouds and snow.

"Unfurled" (Day 41) - Before yesterday, I'd never looked very closely at tulips. I always assumed that their upright clustered petals were all that there was to see. I took a peek inside a brilliant red tulip yesterday, and what I saw was more complex and beautiful than I had ever imagined.

Looking back at the week, and at the art I created so far this year I can definitely see my style and technique evolving (as my husband put it, I've really "stepped up my game in February.") I'm excited to see how my work will continue to change throughout the year!

Prints and Cards and Canvases, oh my!

I'm excited to announce that I have prints and note cards of all 31 images from January for sale at my Zazzle store, as well as canvas prints of some of the most popular images from the month.

The prints are all 4" x 6" and are available on a variety of matte and glossy papers. Zazzle has many matting and framing options to choose from.

The cards are available in two sizes, a smaller note card size and a larger greeting card size, and can be customized with your own text to make them perfect for any occasion.

The canvas prints are all custom sized, based on the original artwork. The images on these premium quality prints are wrapped around stretcher bars on all four sides, so that no framing is necessary!

Zazzle sells a wide variety of products...everything from mugs to t-shirts to iPhone cases. I'll be adding new categories of items for sale in my Zazzle store in the coming weeks (next up, magnets). In the mean time, if there's an image from days 1-31 that you'd like on a specific item, let me know and I'll make sure that it's available for you!

As for the original paintings...I'm saving them all for an art show after I've completed the series, where they will all be matted, framed and available for purchase.
