JUDGEMENT CALL: JUDGE'S LOYALTY TO VOLPE IS NOT THE ACT OF A TRUE LEADER

2026-10-19T05:36:00.000-04:00

"If we were gonna go win a World Series, we needed Anthony Volpe on the team," Aaron Judge said after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs.

That's your captain speaking ladies and gentlemen, read more HERE. I've been sitting on this one for a few days and shaking my head repeatedly. We all know he can't handle shortstop. We watched him struggle for five seasons. Finally this season the Yankees figured out they couldn't ignore it anymore and George Lombard Jr took over but the Yankees gave Volpe a shot at second base also. Things are about to get interesting....

The Yankees are not expected to give Jazz Chisholm a qualifying offer, so he should be playing for another team next season (please!) so that leaves a hole at second base. The Yankees have no one waiting in the wings as a logical person to promote and there are few enticing free agents to target. So here we go again, after Aaron Judge gave his vote of confidence, does that mean the Yankees try a Volpe refresh at second?

It could be. If there is anyone on this team Yankees leadership is going to take feedback from seriously, it Judge. He's pulling for Volpe big time, and while I admire a leader standing up for his guys there's a line. You can still be supportive without putting both feet in, especially if it isn't best for the team. But he's going all in and might not be asking the questions a leader should.

"To handle that type of adversity, not only from the game, not playing your best, and then hearing it from fans, hearing from everybody and then for him to go down to Triple A, work on what he needed to and then come up here with a bang like he did, it just speaks volumes to his character," Judge said.

I can appreciate how Judge stands up for Volpe and speaks to his adversity. New York is not an easy place to play and he's right fans have been brutally honest about Volpe. But it is just that....honest. We've seen four full seasons of mess ups at shortstop. He had a short trip down to Triple-A and you know what, he should've busted his butt to get back to the big leagues. Someone is always waiting to take your place. Just because you want something bad enough doesn't mean it's just handed to you. It should be no different here. Earn the spot you want and continue to perform at a high level to keep it. That is what he has failed to do.

I will say character is important. Clubhouse chemistry is important. Everyone is going to root for the guy that everyone likes and gets along with. People rally around the guy with the good attitude as opposed to the arrogant guy who thinks he is better than everyone else. Character is important, but a spot on a team is not earned with just good character without consistency and productivity. It can't be one or the other. If it was just character everyone reading this blog could be a candidate for the Yankees, but we're not.

So I'm sorry Judge, but a player on this team needs to have a complete package. Character is cute, five years of errors with failures isn't. This is a business with a legacy, not a charity. It's time to move on.

THE YANKEES DEMAND LOYALTY BUT WHEN WILL THEIR LEADERSHIP DELIVER ACCOUNTABILITY?

2026-10-17T11:12:37.563-04:00

Ya'll have some explaining to do. I mean, how many times are Yankees fans supposed to watch the same ending before the people running this organization admit the script needs to change?

Another October is over. Another opportunity is gone. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees out of the ALDS, extending a championship drought that now stretches across 17 seasons. And the questions reach well beyond one lineup, one pitching change or one injured superstar. They reach the people responsible for deciding what Yankees baseball is supposed to look like.

Hal Steinbrenner. Brian Cashman. Randy Levine. Aaron Boone. Different responsibilities. Different levels of authority. The same obligation to answer for the product.

Yankees fans deserve a team that looks prepared when the season is on the line. They deserve players who understand situations, coaches who correct recurring mistakes and executives who can recognize when their own approach needs to change. That is a reasonable expectation for any organization. For the Yankees, it should be the starting point.

And now some of the people who wore the uniform are asking the same questions.

The criticism is coming from inside the Yankees family

Anthony Rizzo spent four seasons in the Bronx. After this year’s elimination, he offered a blunt assessment on Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered:

“Like we just keep doing the same every year and we don’t win. That’s insanity.”

Rizzo acknowledged the talent in the lineup while questioning why the results against strong competition keep falling short. That distinction matters. A roster can look impressive and still expose serious weaknesses in how an organization assembles, prepares and deploys it.

CC Sabathia went straight at the culture.

“No disrespect, but they don’t know what that standard is.”

During an October discussion with Dellin Betances and Chris Young, Sabathia described the influence of veterans and former Yankees who once made the organization’s expectations tangible. He questioned whether that standard was still being maintained. The conversation also addressed preparation and Boone’s tendency to defend his players.

Those are serious concerns from someone whose credibility in that clubhouse was earned through performance, toughness and leadership.

Alex Rodriguez, meanwhile, called for an organizational rethink on FOX:

“There has to be a philosophy change.”

Importantly, Rodriguez explicitly stopped short of demanding firings. His criticism concerned the Yankees’ baseball judgment, defensive priorities and uncertainty across several positions entering an elimination game. You can disagree with his preferred solution. You cannot reasonably dismiss that diagnosis as a fan yelling from the cheap seats.

Then came Joe Girardi.

“There are things that happen and you wonder, ‘Is someone saying anything?’”

Girardi pointed to Austin Wells’ baserunning mistake and Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s costly throw during the postseason. He also defended Boone’s work under difficult circumstances. His comments were a warning about accountability and repeated fundamental failures, rather than a straightforward demand to replace the manager.

That nuance strengthens the larger argument. These men do not need to agree about Boone’s future to recognize that something in the organization needs attention.

The mistakes have become too familiar

Go back to the fifth inning of Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.

Aaron Judge dropped a fly ball. Anthony Volpe made a throwing error. Gerrit Cole failed to cover first on a grounder to Anthony Rizzo. A five-run lead disappeared in an inning that became an unforgettable exhibit of baseball breaking down at its most basic level.

Now move forward to Game 2 against Tampa Bay in 2026: four Yankees errors, with defensive mistakes and catcher’s interference helping turn the game against them.

Every player makes mistakes. Great players make mistakes in enormous moments.

But recurring failures demand more than reassurance. They demand an examination of preparation, positioning, instruction and consequences. When similar problems survive from one postseason to another, the organization has to explain what it changed and why those changes failed.

Fans should be able to see the correction.

Jake Bauers deserves an honest examination

Watching Jake Bauers become the 2026 NLCS MVP for Milwaukee should make the Yankees uncomfortable. The former Yankee helped drive the Brewers past the Dodgers and into the World Series.

But there is an important fact here: New York did work with him.

Reporting in 2023 documented swing and approach adjustments during Bauers’ time in the Yankees’ system, including changes to his bat path. The organization identified something worth developing and invested instruction in it.

The Yankees subsequently traded him to Milwaukee for prospects Jace Avina and Brian Sánchez. His later success does not automatically prove that trade was indefensible when it happened. Player development is uneven, and no team gets every decision right.

Here is the question Cashman should have to answer: How well does the organization recognize which improvements will last, and how effectively does it carry promising developmental work into sustained major league production?

Bauers’ success makes that question worth asking. Claiming the Yankees never helped him would let the front office dismiss the criticism with an easy factual correction.

The stronger argument demands an explanation of what they saw, why they moved on and what they learned.

Players have questioned the instruction before. The concerns predate this October. In 2023, former Yankees minor leaguer Ben Ruta offered a devastating assessment:

“There is no baseball being taught there anymore.”

Ruta criticized a developmental emphasis he believed rewarded selected measurable outcomes while neglecting broader baseball instruction. His account represents one former player’s experience, rather than a complete audit of the farm system. Still, it raised a question the Yankees should welcome being tested: Are their players learning how to win games, or mainly how to improve the measurements the organization values?

Sonny Gray also publicly questioned the fit between his abilities and the Yankees’ instruction. In 2019, he criticized their emphasis on a slider he described as “a s----y spinning pitch.” Contemporary analysis challenged parts of his recollection using pitch-tracking data, so his explanation should not be treated as the final word on his struggles. But it remains a documented example of a player saying the prescribed approach did not suit him.

Good coaching requires adapting instruction to the person receiving it. An organization should be confident enough in its methods to recognize when those methods need adjustment.

Boone’s responsibility cannot disappear behind his popularity. The Yankees hired Boone without previous coaching or managerial experience. That was their choice, and they own it.

Years later, however, his original résumé is a weaker argument than the work fans can now judge for themselves.

Does his team execute? Does it respond to mistakes? Does it enter difficult situations prepared? Does his leadership produce observable improvement?

A manager can care about his players, maintain their trust and still fall short in enforcing standards. Public support has value. So does knowing when support needs to include a hard conversation and a changed expectation.

It would also be inaccurate to describe the entire coaching operation as having no experience. The more useful demand is that the Yankees demonstrate that their instruction works.

Fans are entitled to ask why basic problems remain visible after years of opportunities to address them.

Randy Levine’s record includes a lesson in how to alienate a player

If Levine wants to discuss organizational standards, his handling of Dellin Betances’ 2017 arbitration case belongs in the conversation. After the Yankees won, Levine publicly criticized the position taken by Betances’ representatives. Betances said the experience left him feeling attacked:

“They take me in a room, trash me for about an hour-and-a-half.”

Levine also praised Betances as an elite setup man, but his decision to continue the dispute publicly helped turn a completed salary proceeding into an unnecessary confrontation. That episode is an older example, and it should be identified as one. It nevertheless illustrates a leadership failure worth remembering: winning a negotiation does not excuse damaging a relationship with someone whose work you depend on.

The Yankees should bring the same energy to examining executive mistakes that they bring to defending executive decisions.

Hal owns the outcome. Steinbrenner has said, “I don’t believe I should have a $300 million payroll to win a championship.” Fair enough. Then demand better results from the people spending it.

A large payroll is a resource. Turning it into a balanced, prepared team is management’s job.

Hal does not have to imitate his father’s temper. He does have to establish expectations that carry consequences. He chooses who leads baseball operations. He decides whether continuity remains justified. He has the authority to require an independent examination of development, coaching and roster construction.

Backing your employees can be admirable. Continuing to back an approach without demanding convincing evidence of improvement becomes something else.

The public record cannot tell us every private conversation Hal or Levine has had. Fans can judge whether the organization’s actions are producing the promised standard.

The Yankees need changes people can see

A serious response would begin with clear responsibility: for player development, defensive preparation, baserunning, roster balance and the correction of recurring mistakes.

It would include baseball voices empowered to challenge Cashman’s assumptions. It would judge coaches by their ability to teach and improve players. It would examine departures such as Bauers without pretending every successful former Yankee represents a scandal.

And it would require ownership to explain why the people entrusted with solving these problems are still the right people to do it.

Fans should not have to choose between loving the Yankees and questioning their leadership.

That love is precisely why the questions matter.

Rizzo is questioning the repetition. Sabathia is questioning the standard. Rodriguez is questioning the philosophy. Girardi is questioning the accountability.

The men running the Yankees should be answering them.

The championship history belongs to the franchise.

The responsibility for what happens next belongs to its leadership.

CLEAN HOUSE. LOSER CASHMAN’S YANKEES ARE A FAILURE.

2026-10-16T07:53:04.270-04:00

AI Generated

Brian Cashman built this mess. Aaron Boone keeps explaining it. And Yankees fans keep getting charged championship prices to watch an organization congratulate itself for coming up short.

Enough.

The 2027 Yankees need a demolition crew. Start with the front office’s arrogance, work through the manager’s office, and stop treating disappointing players like priceless family heirlooms.

Austin Wells needs to be a backup catcher. Period.

A .186 batting average. A .624 OPS. Fourteen home runs and 32 RBIs. Those were his 2026 numbers. Somewhere along the way, the Yankees apparently decided an everyday catcher’s bat was an optional accessory.

Nobody is watching those at-bats and seeing Thurman Munson. They’re watching another Yankees development project whose reputation keeps arriving at the ballpark before his production does.

His defense has value. Fine. Make him the backup. A good glove should earn consideration; it shouldn’t grant lifetime immunity from hitting .186.

Cashman needs to find a starting catcher who can contribute offensively without requiring a presentation explaining why the contribution is secretly happening.

Anthony Volpe? Trade him. Immediately.

The Yankees sold fans a cornerstone. Four seasons into his major league career, the offensive foundation still looks like wet cardboard.

A career 83 OPS+ through 542 regular-season games is a substantial body of evidence. League average is 100. How much longer are we supposed to applaud the possibility that he eventually gets there?

The hometown story was lovely. The marketing department must have loved it. Unfortunately, the opposing pitcher doesn’t care where you went to high school.

My assessment of Volpe now? A reserve infielder. A guy backing up second base in Cincinnati. That’s an opinion about his role, not a report about a Reds trade.

The Yankees presented him like a destination when he was still a question. Then they made questioning him feel like a violation of team policy.

Fans deserved an honest evaluation. Instead, they got a sales pitch with pinstripes.

Trade him while another organization still believes it can unlock what the Yankees keep insisting is in there.

Then fire Aaron Boone.

No farewell tour. No discussion about how much the players love him. No more treating clubhouse approval like the final score.

A manager can have good relationships with his players and still demand excellence. With Boone, the reassurance is easy to find. The consequences are considerably harder.

From the outside, he looks like Cashman’s preferred spokesman wearing a uniform. The puppet criticism survives because the arrangement keeps producing the same spectacle: the roster fails, Boone explains, Cashman remains above the wreckage.

What, exactly, would constitute failure serious enough to change this?

The Yankees dismissed Joe Girardi on October 26, 2017, after an ALCS Game 7 loss. Cashman cited problems connecting and communicating with players.

Apparently, the organization solved the communication problem by hiring someone who can explain disappointment indefinitely.

Chicago moved on from Joe Maddon in September 2019 after a collapse cost the Cubs a playoff berth.

Accomplished managers lose jobs. Boone keeps getting another opportunity to tell us how close this group is.

Fire him. The Yankees need leadership with enough authority to make standards matter.

Jazz? Gone. We're done with the antics. We're done with the BS.

Trent Grisham? Pack up.

His 2026 salary was $22.025 million. His production: .211, 18 homers and a .703 OPS.

Twenty-two million dollars bought the Yankees another hitter fans needed to be talked into appreciating.

Cashman’s ability to spend enormous money and still leave obvious holes should be studied. Every winter brings another complicated explanation for why something underwhelming was actually clever.

Let Grisham walk. Stop paying for the memory of a better season.

David Bednar? I’d move on—but the numbers deserve an honest hearing.

He recorded 35 saves in 39 chances with a 2.47 ERA. That’s good pitching.

It also doesn’t obligate the Yankees to make him another expensive attachment while the lineup needs repairs.

My preference is to spend elsewhere and build a replacement plan. A good closer can protect a lead. He cannot manufacture a functional offense or repair Cashman’s judgment.

The closer’s entrance music should not be the most dependable part of the organizational plan.

Giancarlo Stanton? Confront reality already.

The healthy version of Stanton has been tremendous entertainment. The problem is that the healthy version has become somebody the Yankees keep expecting to visit.

Three calf strains cost him more than five months in 2026.

You cannot keep reserving a central place in the offense for a player whose availability requires crossed fingers and a medical briefing.

His contract makes an exit difficult. Releasing him would still leave money owed. Cashman has to deal with that reality instead of using it as permission to repeat the same gamble.

Stanton’s body has repeatedly failed him. The front office fails the roster when it keeps budgeting for a version of him it cannot reliably put on the field.

And that brings us to the man who should be answering for every inch of this:

Brian Cashman.

He evaluates the talent. He constructs the roster. He chooses the manager. He oversees the system that is supposed to develop the players.

Yet somehow, whenever the finished product disappoints, responsibility gets scattered until nobody can find it.

A player didn’t develop. Somebody got hurt. October is unpredictable. The roster looked good on paper.

Who keeps buying the paper?

Cashman cannot claim credit for the organization’s sophistication and then act like its recurring flaws are unfortunate weather.

If the same weaknesses keep surviving different rosters, examine the person assembling them. If the same excuses keep surviving different seasons, examine the people accepting them.

That includes Hal Steinbrenner. Ownership enables this comfort. Cashman has room to keep defending the process because the man above him keeps accepting the explanation.

Meanwhile, Aaron Judge keeps getting older.

That is the unforgivable part.

The Yankees have a player whose greatness should define an era. They are burning through his championship opportunities while debating whether another disappointing season really warrants an uncomfortable decision.

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have publicly questioned the organization’s approach. CC Sabathia has joined the criticism of its leadership and direction.

These are men who understand what winning here requires. The Yankees would be wise to spend less time defending themselves and more time considering why those voices are dissatisfied.

This franchise should be embarrassed.

Embarrassed by the excuses. Embarrassed by the complacency. Embarrassed that fans can identify the problems and still expect the offseason press conference to explain why most of them are coming back.

Change Wells’ role. Trade Volpe. Let Grisham leave. Make hard decisions about Bednar and Stanton.

Fire Boone.

And stop pretending Cashman deserves permanent protection from the results of his own work.

Because if Judge finishes his Yankees career without a championship, the organization will have plenty of time to celebrate his individual achievements.

It will also have to live with the fact that he gave them greatness—and they kept handing him this.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT NO ONE LIKES YOU?

2026-10-15T21:18:00.000-04:00

Aaron Boone, that headline is a fan’s frustration talking. Obviously, you have defenders. Apparently, managing the Yankees comes with a very generous protection plan.

But here’s what I want to know: When does the manager actually become responsible for the results?

Because other managers have impressive résumés, disappointing finishes and an appointment to clean out their offices. Boone gets another discussion about why we should appreciate him.

Enough already.

Baseball has shown plenty of accomplished managers the door with considerably less patience. Five examples make the Yankees’ endless tolerance look ridiculous:

1. Joe Girardi — Yankees, October 26, 2017.
The Yankees declined to bring Girardi back after he took them within one win of the World Series. This was a manager who had already delivered the 2009 championship. Brian Cashman’s principal explanation? Concerns about his communication and connection with players.

So the guy with a ring needed better communication. His replacement apparently needs better results, but somehow that conversation keeps getting postponed.

2. Dusty Baker — Nationals, October 20, 2017.
Washington declined to renew Baker after consecutive division titles and Division Series defeats. His final season produced 97 wins.

Two seasons. Two division championships. Washington still wanted more. Whether that decision was wise is debatable. Whether the organization demanded something beyond a respectable regular season is not.

3. John Farrell — Red Sox, October 11, 2017.
Boston fired its 2013 championship manager after consecutive ALDS exits. Dave Dombrowski wanted a leadership change but declined to detail specific reasons.

A championship didn’t buy Farrell permanent immunity. Neither did winning the division two years running. Boston was willing to ask whether a different voice could produce something better.

4. Mike Shildt — Cardinals, October 14, 2021.
St. Louis dismissed Shildt over organizational philosophical differences, one week after a Wild Card loss. He was a former Manager of the Year.

Imagine that: a front office and manager having enough independent opinions to disagree. In the Bronx, I’d settle for evidence that somebody finds the annual explanation unacceptable.

5. Joe Maddon — Angels, June 7, 2022.
The Angels fired Maddon during a 12-game losing streak. His résumé included Chicago’s 2016 championship and Tampa Bay’s 2008 pennant.

A manager who helped end the Cubs’ century of misery could still lose his job. Apparently, past accomplishments have an expiration date everywhere except inside the Yankees’ excuse department.

And that brings us back to Boone.

The Yankees originally handed him this job with no previous coaching or managerial experience. That was an extraordinary gamble for this franchise.

You can learn on the job. But eventually, the apprenticeship ends. Eventually, the question becomes whether you are good enough to deliver what the position demands.

I don’t believe Boone has demonstrated that he is. The dude cannot close.

Being personable helps. Having players like you helps. Neither should be confused with building a team that consistently executes when the stakes get highest. A manager needs judgment, authority and the willingness to make people uncomfortable when their performance demands it.

My criticism of Boone is that he too often projects reassurance when this franchise needs urgency.

And yes, to me, he looks like a front-office puppet. That’s a judgment about his public leadership, not a claim that I’ve seen private marching orders. The problem is the impression itself: an organization explains its approach, Boone sells it, the season disappoints, and everybody returns to explain the approach again.

If Boone owns the decisions, judge him on them. If the front office controls the decisions, judge the people pulling the strings. Either way, this arrangement deserves scrutiny.

The Yankees cannot keep selling championship expectations while treating demands for change like some unreasonable tantrum from the cheap seats.

Fans understand that winning is difficult. What they resent is watching failure become familiar enough that the organization has a comfortable speech prepared for it.

The Yankees franchise has become an embarrassment in its approach to accountability. The history is magnificent. The patience with the present operation is exhausting.

Girardi needed better communication. Baker needed more October success. Farrell needed to give way to a different voice.

What, exactly, does Aaron Boone need to do to lose the benefit of the doubt?

Because the fans have been asked to renew theirs far too many times.

BAUERS THRIVES & PROVES THE YANKEES FRONT OFFICE IS CLUELESS

2026-10-15T12:06:00.000-04:00

Jake Bauers spent Wednesday night fighting off Blake Snell. Brian Cashman should have spent it fighting off indigestion.

Eleven pitches. A two-run homer. A seventh-inning lead change at Dodger Stadium that helped Milwaukee beat Los Angeles, 6–2, and move within one win of the World Series. Two nights earlier, Bauers worked a 12-pitch walk ahead of Christian Yelich’s two-run single. Apparently, somebody forgot to tell him he was supposed to be disposable.

Watch those at-bats. That is a skilled hitter working. Recognizing pitches. Protecting the plate. Refusing to surrender an at-bat because the pitcher has better credentials.

The kind of baseball you’re supposed to teach.

Which brings us to the Yankees, an organization that can explain a player’s limitations in seventeen different statistical languages but too often struggles to help him overcome them.

Bauers hit .202 with a .279 on-base percentage, a .693 OPS and 12 homers in 84 games for New York in 2023. The reason? Boone's inconsistency with the lineup. It still exists today. There were legitimate problems. Nobody needs to pretend otherwise. The question is whether the Yankees saw problems worth solving or they were just clueless on how to build up players. I say it's the latter.

Here’s his 2026 answer: .266/.389/.484, 26 homers, 86 RBIs. Sánchez added 12 homers and a .771 OPS.

That’s an enormous improvement for Bauers: 110 points in on-base percentage and 180 points in OPS over his Yankees season.

Funny how much better a hitter looks when he keeps reaching base.

And Gary Sánchez? Remember him? Before he became everybody’s favorite punching bag, he was supposed to be the future of the Yankees. In 2016, he hit .299 with 20 home runs in just 53 games. That excitement wasn’t invented by a marketing department. The kid could hit baseballs into next week.

He became a two-time All-Star and a Silver Slugger winner. Those accomplishments happened in pinstripes, too. That makes the eventual breakdown more frustrating: the Yankees had already seen what he could do.

Sánchez’s batting average this season certainly doesn’t scream superstar. But Milwaukee is getting useful offense from him while Bauers has become a major threat. A contender has found room for two former Yankees to contribute in October.

Somehow, the Brewers managed to survive the discovery that their players weren’t perfect.

Here’s my problem with Cashman’s operation: too often, it feels as though the Yankees acquire talent, identify the flaws and wait for the player to arrive at his own solution. When the solution doesn’t come quickly enough, the organization moves on with another explanation about roster construction.

Where is the accountability for making the player better?

We cannot see every coaching session. These numbers don’t prove nobody in New York worked with Bauers or Sánchez. But they absolutely justify asking why another organization is getting value the Yankees couldn’t sustain.

And before somebody calls this hindsight, remember Texas.

Nathan Eovaldi went 5–0 with a 2.95 ERA in the 2023 postseason. Aroldis Chapman posted a 2.25 ERA across nine playoff appearances. Jordan Montgomery was there too! Three former Yankees, both helping the Rangers win a championship.

Different departures. Different circumstances. Same irritating television experience for Yankees fans: watching familiar faces help somebody else finish the job.

No, every former Yankee doesn’t become a star. But how many of these October reminders does this front office get before its judgment becomes the story?

Development requires patience, instruction and a plan that changes when the player needs something different. You don’t get to take credit for identifying talent and then shrug when somebody else figures out how to use it.

Bauers stood there Wednesday night and made Snell keep working until he got a pitch he could punish.

That takes skill. It takes confidence. It takes the willingness to stay in the fight.

The Yankees’ front office ought to try it.

GIRARDI STEPS INTO THE BATTER'S BOX TO DEFEND BOONE & STRIKES OUT LOOKING!

2026-10-15T07:44:31.824-04:00

File this story under "you just can't make this sh*t up!" Seriously. It's bananas. It's hard to find Aaron Boone defenders (especially on this site), but at least one does exist! It's a unicorn ladies and gentlemen!

Yankee fans are sick of Baboonie. He sucks, there is no sugar-coating this one. He's soft, can't manage a team and is the exact opposite of a leader but Joe Girardi defends him. There's no logical explanation to this but, Girardi says this was this was Baboonie's "best year of managing" and he's serious while the rest of us are laughing our asses off, you can read more HERE.

Maybe it was his best year of managing failure and chaos. I'll give him that. He had a lot of adversity to deal with but you know what....so does every manager! He doesn't get a high five for that. Injuries are a part of the game and they've been an obstacle since the beginning of baseball as we know it. Injuries are not the reason for the Yankees failure.

The lack of fundamentals and playing smart baseball is the reason for the Yankees failures. They do the same thing year after year. We've had nine years of this team living and dying by the long ball. They lack fundamentals. They can't play small ball, and they can't play smart baseball. How many stupid Jazz Chisholm quotes did we have to listen to after he botched a play that little leaguers can do? He was a disaster all season. Did Baboonie fix that? NO. He may have talked to Chisholm about it, but it certainly didn't work. It's a lack of accountability no matter how you slice it.

So this is my problem. Look at the pattern with Chisholm this season, how the hell is that his best year of managing? This failure falls on Baboonie. He's not solving the problem, he's trying to cover it up in hopes it won't show up again. Interestingly enough, Girardi does say that the Yankees have a culture problem, read more HERE. So who exactly is the one that cultivates culture? It's not the bat boy, it's the manager! How can you possibly be a good manager when you have a culture that lacks accountability? You can't! A good manager knows how to help their team thrive. That's not what Baboonie is doing. If he is going to argue the Yankees need a culture change, no one is going to disagree with him there. However, arguing for a culture change that includes keeping Baboonie is the dumbest thing he could ever say.

So basically Girardi is talking out of both sides of his mouth. He stepped up to the plate, tried to make a case for Baboonie and boy did he swing and miss. Epic failure.....just like another Yankees season.

BLEEDING YANKEE BLUE BROUGHT THE DYNAMITE. RIZZO LIT THE FUSE.

2026-10-14T08:31:25.252-04:00

First off, you’re all late to the party.

If you’ve been reading Bleeding Yankee Blue for the past five years, none of this should surprise you. We’ve been hammering the Yankees’ front office, questioning Brian Cashman’s judgment and calling out Aaron Boone’s failed leadership while everyone else kept waiting for the same operation to magically produce a different ending.

Now the criticism is getting louder. Wonderful. Grab a chair. We’ve been sitting here for years.

And thank God for Anthony Rizzo.

On Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered, Rizzo questioned how a team with this much talent and financial muscle keeps coming up empty. His description? “The definition of insanity.” He challenged the endless repetition and the Yankees’ inability to beat the teams standing between them and a championship.

Finally. Somebody who wore the uniform is saying something worth hearing.

Rizzo didn’t name Boone. Let’s be clear about that. But BYB will: Aaron Boone has failed as a leader, and the front office has failed by continuing to accept the results.

There comes a point when defending your players becomes protecting a culture that desperately needs to change. A manager has to demand something. Preparation. Discipline. Accountability. And when October exposes your team again, he needs a better answer than another explanation of how close everything was to working.

Close doesn’t get a parade. Close gets the equipment packed.

The Rays swept the Yankees out of the Division Series, giving Boone his fourth ALDS exit in nine seasons. That’s an awfully long audition for a franchise supposedly obsessed with winning championships.

And Cashman doesn’t get to watch this from behind the glass like an innocent bystander. He builds the roster. He backs the manager. He owns a substantial piece of this recurring disappointment.

You cannot keep selling the plan while asking everyone to ignore its ending.

Then there’s the communication. Boone publicly described Aaron Judge’s calf strain as moderate; Judge questioned that characterization. That disagreement doesn’t establish a clubhouse revolt, but the manager and captain offering conflicting injury messages certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in how this operation communicates.

The Yankees have enough problems beating other teams. Getting their own message straight ought to be manageable.

Now the looming labor situation is being discussed as a reason they might keep Boone. Reporting has identified a possible December lockout as a complication in making a managerial change. That is a consideration, not an announcement that Boone is staying.

But if organizational convenience becomes the justification for another year of this, fans should be furious.

Leadership changes require work. So does winning. The Yankees can afford both.

Rizzo’s comments matter because they puncture the comfortable idea that another expensive roster will finally fix everything. Talent needs direction. Spending needs judgment. Players need leadership that produces more than loyalty to the manager.

For five years, we’ve been asking where the accountability is.

Now more people are asking.

Welcome aboard. But don’t confuse your arrival with the beginning of the conversation.

BYB has been sounding the alarm. The Yankees keep hitting snooze.

HOW ABOUT WE BRING BACK GLEYBER?

2026-10-13T05:59:00.000-04:00

The Yankees MUST bring back Gleyber Torres. Put him at second base, let Jazz Chisholm leave and find a new home for Anthony Volpe. I think it’s a brilliant idea. And yes, Brian Cashman, you’re allowed to make one of those without first shopping for an injured pitcher.

Enough already. I want Gleyber back in pinstripes.

Now, I remember the mistakes. Please don’t send me a seventeen-minute video of every ball he booted. I watched them live. Some of those games aged me in dog years.

Gleyber could drive you crazy. You’d cheer his double, then watch him do something on the bases that made you wonder whether his controller had disconnected.

But I liked the player. I still do. And I believe bringing him back to play second base would be a smart move for a team that needs to rethink its infield.

Jazz? Talented guy. Plenty of ability. But I’m ready to turn the page. The Yankees need to decide what they want from that position, and my vote is Gleyber with a glove, a bat and a clearly marked parking space.

Volpe can go, too. Find a trade. Give him a fresh start somewhere else. Being a Yankees prospect should earn you an opportunity, not a deed to the property.

We’ve spent enough time waiting for the organization’s plans to come together. At some point, fans are allowed to ask whether the cake is ever coming out of the oven.

Cashman would probably tell us it needs another three years and a waiver claim.

Here’s what appeals to me about Gleyber: we know him. We know the good, we know the frustrating, and we know he understands what comes with playing in the Bronx. He wouldn’t need an orientation explaining that a Tuesday groundout can become a Wednesday radio segment.

And there’s something refreshing about the Yankees admitting they might want a player back. Imagine that meeting.

“Brian, perhaps we should reconsider.”

Security would be there in seconds.

But reconsidering is part of running a baseball team. You’re supposed to evaluate the roster, recognize what isn’t working and make changes. You don’t get bonus wins for remaining loyal to your own PowerPoint.

Bring Gleyber back and make him the second baseman. Give him clear expectations and hold him to them.

Nobody is asking for a lifetime contract or a monument. We’re asking for a reunion that I believe could make this team better—and would certainly make me interested in watching that infield again.

Let Jazz walk. Trade Volpe. Bring back Gleyber.

And if it works, Brian, you can tell everybody it was your idea.

We know how much you enjoy that.

GIAN-GONE-LO! IT'S TIME FOR THE YANKEES TO SAY GOODBYE TO STANTON

2026-10-12T05:36:00.000-04:00

It's time to blow everything up and start from scratch....and I mean everything. Say goodbye to dead weight in the front office, players and coaches on the field and that means some big names. I'm talking about Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman, but not just them. It's time to do it and do it right....

Aaron Judge deserves a legit chance at a championship and he isn't getting any younger. The idea of "running it back" with the same team and giving it another shot is just stupid. The insanity must stop. Some tough decisions need to be made, and one of those is his good friend Giancarlo Stanton. It's time.

Cutting someone isn't easy. The Yankees had to do it with DJ LeMahieu and Alex Rodriguez only to name a couple. It happens. They aren't easy decisions to make and they becomes especially difficult when they are still obligated to pay those players but, sometimes it is what is best for the team and that is the case here.

Stanton has been a Yankee for nine seasons now. Out of a possible 1,356 games he's only played in 764 (the 2020 season was shorted to only 60 games due to the Covid pandemic). He's been plagued by injuries over the years and this year was no exception. When Stanton is on, he's on. He's a force to be reckoned with but like Judge, he's not getting any younger and I am tired of tying up a roster spot with a guy that can't stay healthy. It doesn't get easier as anyone ages but Stanton is too focused on his heavy lifting instead of mobility and stretching. It's a problem the Yankees just can't afford anymore.

It's time to cut our losses and release Stanton. A long lockout is coming, and whenever we come out the other side of this and are ready to play Stanton just doesn't have a place on this team. I've had too many people tell me it makes more sense for the Yankees to keep him and I couldn't disagree more. All I keep hearing about is how Stanton's power is still there and with only one more season the Yankees might as well bring him into whatever Spring Training looks like next season post lockout and see if he can contribute anything, even if it is just as a DH.

But why should that be enough? The only way Stanton contributes is by staying healthy because it takes him for freaking ever to get his timing back when he does return from IL stints and he hits .250 because occasionally he runs into one. He tempts you with power occasionally otherwise he just clogs up the bench and the bases with no ability to run the bases. The whole idea of keeping him to see what he has left in the tank is the exact philosophy that got us into this mess. We have the data, it ain't good and it's not going to change.

A roster is valuable and has limited space. If the only thing Stanton can do is DH and go to the IL, that's not worth $15 million. If he had a proven track record of 500-600 productive at bats a season, it might be different. But he hasn't so he is a waste of a spot on the bench. Stanton can’t even run to first without tweaking something. My grandmother runs faster than him.

Not to mention, I am tired of tying up the DH spot with one person. The Yankees would greatly benefit having that spot more available so they can give guys a partial rest. It would help the Yankees avoid the infinitely long IL list. It's called smarter baseball.

So as much as some people may hate it, it's time to dump Stanton's dead weight. Bench space is too valuable to carry a guy who really lives on the IL. There's no convincing me otherwise!

VOTTO WANTS VOLPE? SOMEBODY FIND THE PACKING TAPE.

2026-10-11T17:59:29.692-04:00

Finally, an Anthony Volpe story I can get excited about. It involves another team.

Reds On SI reports that Joey Votto endorsed a fan’s suggestion that Cincinnati trade for Volpe, responding, “I like this idea.” There’s no reported deal brewing. Just an idea. But what a lovely little idea it is.

I love that Votto likes it. If his endorsement helps get Volpe out of the Bronx, put Joey on my Christmas card list.

I’ve had enough of the Volpe sales pitch. The potential. The patience. The endless suggestion that we’re all one adjustment away from witnessing something special.

At some point, the adjustment needs to be a change of address.

Volpe’s career OPS below .700 and he hit .265 after returning from his 2026 demotion. Fine. An encouraging stretch. To me, that’s nowhere near enough to erase the frustration or justify another round of blind faith.

His bat has too often made the promise look ridiculous. I’m tired of grading him on what he might become while watching what he actually produces.

This is the Yankees. Fans are allowed to expect an offense that doesn’t require a motivational speaker to explain it.

And Brian Cashman needs to stop treating moving on as an admission he can’t afford to make. You picked the player. You gave him the opportunity. Now evaluate the results. Your scouting report isn’t sacred scripture.

If the Reds see something they can fix, wonderful. Let Cincinnati take its turn staring under the hood. Get a useful return and move forward.

Could Volpe improve somewhere else? Sure. That possibility doesn’t obligate the Yankees to keep waiting, and it certainly doesn’t obligate me to keep applauding the wait.

Votto likes the idea. I love the possibility.

Give me a sensible trade that sends this kid out of the Bronx, and I’ll supply the packing tape.

We’ve spent enough time unwrapping the promise.

ANTHONY RIZZO HAS A BACKBONE. YET THE YANKEES STILL DON'T HAVE ONE

2026-10-10T08:14:26.751-04:00

Back in February 2025, I suggested that Anthony Rizzo could return to the Yankees in a player-coach role. The idea was simple: keep a respected veteran in the clubhouse, use his experience to teach younger players, call out bad attitudes and preserve something this organization too often treats as expendable—leadership. Read: COULD RIZZO EVOLVE INTO A PLAYER-COACH ROLE WITH THE YANKEES?

Newsweek picked up our article, as we documented at Bleeding Yankee Blue. Why did it deserve attention? My answer remains the same: because it made baseball sense. Rizzo’s value extended beyond whatever production remained in his bat. There was knowledge there. Credibility. An understanding of what winning requires and what wearing that uniform demands. Oh yea, and his presence provides leadership.

Now, after another miserable October ending, that argument looks pretty damn relevant.

The Rays swept the Yankees out of the ALDS, finishing them with a 4–3 loss. Another season ended with the other team celebrating and Yankee fans wondering when the people running this operation will stop confusing expectations with accomplishments.

Then came Jazz Chisholm’s confusion about getting booed. Apparently, amid the disappointment of a playoff elimination, we needed to stop everything and discuss whether the paying customers had been sufficiently encouraging. Jazz, read the room. Preferably before explaining it to everybody else.

On Ross and Rizzo, Anthony Rizzo slammed Jazz. He questioned how Chisholm could be surprised by boos after seeing established Yankees stars receive the same treatment. Rizzo described him as looking like “a player that’s lost.” He also challenged the organization’s annual championship declarations: the Yankees cannot keep announcing the highest standard without producing results that justify the talk.

"Jazz Chisholm's comments after the game just looks like a player who is lost,"

"He says after the game about being booed, 'I don't understand, I was confused why I was being booed.' It surprises you that you were booed? What do you mean?"

"You've played there for three-plus years now, you've seen [Anthony] Volpe get run out of town. You've seen Judgey get booed. You've seen Stanton get booed.

"It surprises you that you got booed? That's just not the right way to answer questions...You just have to be smarter there… it shows a little bit of immaturity there."

That is accountability.

No soothing soundtrack. No lengthy explanation of why disappointment is secretly encouraging. A former teammate heard something that needed challenging and challenged it.

That is the voice I wanted inside the Yankees’ clubhouse in February 2025. But more importantly its the voice I wanted there since Girardi left. Boone's a pushover. He's a fanboy. He wants to be friends with all his players. He is a poor leader.

You can debate whether booing helps a player. Fine. Have that conversation. But the first response after failure should concern the failure. What went wrong? What needs to improve? What responsibility do you bear?

Fans did not strike out for you. They did not throw the ball away. They did not assemble the roster or write the lineup. They bought the tickets.

The Yankees seem awfully comfortable accepting championship prices while asking their customers to practice developmental patience. And that brings us to Aaron Boone. My problem with Boone is that his public leadership too often sounds like an effort to cushion every uncomfortable landing. There is always another explanation, another encouraging interpretation, another reason to believe the breakthrough is approaching.

At some point, the breakthrough needs to show up wearing a uniform. A manager should support his players. Absolutely. But support must include correction. When protection becomes the default response to repeated failure, you risk teaching players that the explanation matters more than the improvement.

From where I sit, Boone babies this team. His public posture too often shows no backbone when the moment calls for a firm standard. He can defend a player’s dignity and still say the player’s performance was unacceptable. These are professional athletes. They can survive a sentence without a pillow under it.

I want a manager who can say: we prepared poorly, we executed poorly, and we are going to fix it.

BUT THEN THEY ACTUALLY FIX IT.

Rizzo’s history gives me reason to believe he understands that responsibility.

Consider October 2024. With fractured fingers keeping him out of the Division Series, Rizzo helped Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera with positioning at first base. He remained useful while somebody else occupied his position. That is a concrete example of a veteran transferring knowledge under postseason pressure.

Think about what that tells you.

His contribution did not end when he came off the lineup card. He recognized what teammates needed and helped them prepare. Teaching the details of a position is coaching work, whether the organization prints the title next to your name or not. That was the foundation of my player-coach argument back then and it's what I would expect from a leader in the Yankees clubhouse now. I was proposing that the Yankees give structure to something Rizzo was already demonstrating.

He subsequently returned for the 2024 ALCS, starting at first base just 16 days after fracturing two fingers. He spoke about the opportunity to compete for a pennant and the importance of appreciating it while it was there. That matters because opportunities expire. A talented roster does not come with a reservation for next October.

Rizzo had already helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series, ending their 108-year championship drought. He experienced the pressure of playing for a franchise whose history could feel like an extra opponent. He was part of a team that finally delivered. That experience gives weight to his criticism of empty championship language. And his leadership record extends beyond baseball. A cancer survivor, Rizzo established his family foundation in 2012; he received the Roberto Clemente Award in 2017.

In 2018, he returned to Parkland after the school shooting and spoke at a vigil for the victims.

Those actions show someone willing to accept responsibility when there is no easy thing to say. Someone who shows up for other people.

That quality matters in a clubhouse. Players need to believe that a leader cares about them before criticism carries its full weight. Rizzo’s case is compelling because compassion and directness can coexist in the same person.

You can care about a teammate and tell him his answer was lousy. You can believe in a young player and tell him his preparation needs work. You can build confidence while demanding competence.

The Yankees need considerably more of that.

Instead, this organization keeps inviting questions about whether its development process produces improvement or simply produces more reasons to wait.

Anthony Volpe is the obvious example.

Through his first three seasons, Volpe had a .662 OPS and an 84 OPS+, below league average. By the end of his fourth year, I want answers from the people who scouted him, projected him, promoted him and were responsible for developing him. This kid sucks.

What did you believe his offensive ceiling would be? Which weaknesses did you identify? What was the plan to address them? And how long does the organization get to keep selling potential before somebody evaluates the return?

Calling the results a dud isn't harsh. The Yankees helped create the expectations, and they should have to answer for the gap between the projection and the product. Volpe’s effort does not absolve the organization. Neither does his prospect pedigree.

Scouting is supposed to identify ability. Development is supposed to help turn that ability into reliable major league performance. If the results disappoint year after year, examine both. A framed scouting report cannot take an at-bat. And a manager repeating his belief in a player cannot substitute for a coaching plan that works. Boone is in love with Volpe still looking for a moment. Rizzo would have benched this dude in June.

This is why the Yankees’ training and preparation deserve scrutiny. What are they emphasizing? How are they measuring progress? What happens when an approach keeps failing? Where are the consequences for poor execution?

I am tired of the franchise treating those questions as an attack. Show us the improvement and the questions become easier to answer.

Complacency is comfortable. You can keep the same voices, repeat the same reassurances and tell yourself continuity is a virtue.

But continuity without correction is how you preserve a problem.

Would Rizzo make a terrific manager? I believe he has the qualities to become one. On paper, he's better than Boone already.

His case starts with credibility earned as a player, experience under championship pressure, demonstrated willingness to teach and the ability to deliver an uncomfortable message. Those are substantial foundations for managing people. Boone hit a homerun against the Red Sox that really doesn't matter because the Yankees lost in the World Series anyway.

Sure, Rizzo would still have to prove his ability to run a pitching staff, construct lineups, manage workloads and make decisions over 162 games. Being a respected player does not automatically qualify someone for every responsibility in the dugout.

But the Yankees should take his leadership potential seriously because clearly they don't. Someone like Rizzo would challenge people and not roll over. My February 2025 proposal was about recognizing an asset before it disappeared from the room.

Now Rizzo is speaking into a microphone in a new role, delivering the kind of blunt assessment I know he would deliver if he were the Yankees manager, and that should bother the Yankees. You know, the fact that there are better managerial options out there rather than the one they have.

This is now a former teammate publicly reminding them that accountability belongs at the center of a winning organization, while fans are left wondering who delivers that message inside the building.

Rizzo would not magically fix every flaw. But I believe he could help steer the ship because he understands that leadership includes telling people when they are heading in the wrong direction.

The Yankees need that. They need alot, but they definitely need leadership.

They need better teaching, firmer standards and an honest review of the people responsible for the results. They need to stop protecting their preferred narrative and start correcting the baseball.

I saw the value in Rizzo in February 2025. After this October, the Yankees should be asking why that voice is outside their clubhouse.

BURN IT DOWN. THE YANKEES HAVE TO REBUILD.

2026-10-09T06:08:00.000-04:00

The Rays swept the Yankees, celebrated in their ballpark, and blasted “New York, New York” in the visiting clubhouse.

They took the series. Then they took the soundtrack.

Want to stop another team from turning your stadium into a punchline? Beat them. Tampa Bay earned its celebration. The Yankees earned another winter of uncomfortable questions that somehow never seem to produce meaningful consequences.

Start with Brian Cashman. Then Aaron Boone. This operation needs a complete overhaul, and another offseason of rearranging the same furniture isn’t going to cut it.

Fire Boone. Move on from Cashman. Burn down this approach and build something that actually works in October.

Look at the offense against Tampa Bay:

Game 1: One hit. Zero runs. A 1–0 loss.
Game 2: Two runs, both on solo homers by Ben Rice. A 5–2 loss.
Game 3: Three runs. A 4–3 loss that ended the season.

Five runs in three games. That’s 1.67 runs per game, calculated from those scores. Gerrit Cole gave them a chance in the opener, and the lineup responded by practically disappearing. Austin Wells finally broke up the no-hitter, then got thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple. Their only hit became another mistake.

This wasn’t merely an offense going cold. It was a team failing to execute when every out mattered.

Four errors in Game 2. Then, with elimination staring them in the face, Boone moved Wells up to sixth. Wells went 0-for-3 before being lifted for a pinch hitter. Trent Grisham went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in the finale. Those are the results of the lineup Boone trusted to save the season.

And Boone’s Game 2 decisions deserve scrutiny.

Against left-hander Ian Seymour, he let Luis García Jr. and Spencer Jones hit in the sixth, then stayed with Jazz Chisholm, Grisham and Wells in the seventh. Seymour retired all five. Boone had right-handed alternatives sitting on the bench. His explanation was that Seymour’s numbers made him a relatively neutral matchup, and that he was waiting for baserunners before deploying those alternatives.

Waiting for somebody to reach base while the offense keeps making outs is a hell of a rescue plan.

Yes, there was a statistical argument for staying with the lefties. That doesn’t make the decision untouchable. A manager has to recognize when his plan is producing nothing and decide whether another approach gives his team a better chance.

Boone watched the outs accumulate.

Then came the elimination-game shuffle. Jazz and Ryan McMahon sat. Anthony Volpe and José Caballero started. Asked about choosing Volpe, Boone offered: “Just felt like it.”

Volpe actually contributed in Game 3. Give him that. But the Boone’s explanation still deserves more than a shrug. With the season on the line, fans are entitled to hear a coherent baseball reason.

That’s my problem with Boone’s constant tinkering: What is the governing principle? Matchups? A hot hand? Defense? A feeling? Players need defined responsibilities, and fans need some evidence that all this movement serves a purpose. We cannot prove that lineup changes caused the offensive collapse. We can absolutely judge Boone by the collapse he failed to stop.

He is a failed championship leader. Fire him.

And Cashman doesn’t get to hide behind the manager he keeps endorsing. He built the roster. If the available choices keep leaving Boone searching for a spark, the person assembling those choices belongs in the firing line, too.

Then there’s Jazz, questioning the boos:

“So you’re booing a guy that’s playing, trying to help the team win, and you’re hearing boos instead of trying to hype guys up.”

Jazz, nobody owes you a standing ovation for trying.

You finished the regular season with 19 homers, 41 steals, a .231 average and a .711 OPS. The 19/41 club. Not the 50/50 club. Those steals have value. Your athletic ability has value. But the swagger needs more consistent production behind it. Play cleaner. Play better. Give the fans something to cheer about.

Fans paying real money to watch another October collapse are allowed to express disgust. Millionaire players treating the crowd’s frustration like the central problem is pathetic. The boos didn’t construct this roster or make those errors.

Do not bring back Jazz. Do not bring back Grisham. Get a dependable everyday catcher. Shop Volpe and make a trade that improves this team.

That doesn’t mean giving Volpe away for nothing. It means ending the attachment to what everybody was supposed to become. Evaluate what they are, what they can realistically become, and whether someone else makes the Yankees better.

Judge is asking the front office to address the holes and go all in. He’s right. His message is especially pointed because he also acknowledged that a winning team alone isn’t enough in New York. For accuracy, he backed Boone’s return; the demand to fire Boone is mine.

Build a complete roster around your captain. Stop asking one superstar to cover every organizational weakness.

Get hitters who put together competitive at-bats. Get defenders who finish routine plays. Establish roles. Hire a manager who communicates clearly and demands execution. Make every department answer for whether its work produces a better baseball team.

The greatest franchise in baseball history cannot keep selling its past as an excuse for its present.

I haven’t paid for a ticket to that ballpark in four years because I’m done financing the same bad movie. Be a fan however you want. But ask yourself what incentive this organization has to change if disappointment keeps selling just as well as ambition.

The fans want a championship.

Stop asking us to accept less while charging us more.

Fire Boone. Move on from Cashman. Revamp the roster.

Burn it down and build it back up—because this version of the Yankees has exhausted its excuses.

It is absolutely pathetic.

JUDGE DESERVES A CHAMPIONSHIP. CASHMAN & BOONE DELIVER NOTHING

2026-10-08T20:56:31.044-04:00

Aaron Judge shouldn’t have to remind the New York Yankees what the New York Yankees are supposed to be.

Yet here we are. Another October ends, another opponent advances, and the captain has to explain that the assignment is winning a championship.

“I feel like they [the front office] should go all-in and do what they need to do. If we’ve got holes, if it’s finding certain players or personnel, whatever we need, you’ve got to go out there and get it.” Judge said after the elimination. He’s absolutely right.

And I back him 100 percent.

Brian Cashman, Aaron Boone, Hal Steinbrenner—are you listening? Because the rest of us are sick of watching this organization congratulate itself for getting through the door before falling down the stairs.

The Rays swept the Yankees in three games. New York scored five runs in the entire series. Five. That’s an offensive collapse, and it deserves a harder examination than another winter of assurances that the organization believes in its people.

Well, the fans have seen what that belief produces. We’d like some results.

Judge missed the postseason with a calf injury. His absence hurt. Nobody with a functioning brain would suggest otherwise. But his absence also raises a question Cashman should have to answer: How prepared was the team you built to survive without its best player?

A championship roster needs enough depth, discipline, and dependable production to withstand adversity. Injuries happen. Building a team means preparing for them, too.

Judge’s injury belongs in the explanation. It cannot become the front office’s escape hatch.

Cashman owns the construction of this roster. He owns the choices, the priorities, and the judgment behind them. You cannot spend years accepting credit for assembling contenders and then treat their failures like weather events nobody could have anticipated.

Enough with the résumé. Evaluate the work.

The Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009. How many more disappointing endings does this front office get before its own performance becomes the central offseason question?

And Boone? He deserves the same scrutiny.

The manager’s responsibility extends beyond keeping the clubhouse comfortable. Preparation matters. Execution matters. Recognizing when an approach is failing matters. When the season ends in a sweep, the manager should have to answer for the performance of his team.

I want Boone replaced. He absolutely sucks. I want a different voice, a different approach, and a manager whose continued employment requires more than the organization’s affection.

Judge didn’t demand Boone’s firing. That’s my position. Supporting the captain doesn’t require pretending he said something he didn’t.

It means taking his actual message seriously.

He wants the Yankees to commit fully to winning, address their holes, and match the effort he gives this team and this city. He also acknowledged that acquiring every player he wants isn’t realistic. That’s a reasonable demand from a captain, not some reckless shopping list.

The front office needs to meet it with decisions that improve the team.

Spending alone doesn’t settle the argument. You can write enormous checks and still assemble a roster that doesn’t work. Cashman’s job is to make the pieces fit. Hal’s job is to hold him accountable when they don’t.

And if Hal keeps approving the same leadership after the same disappointment, then Hal owns the outcome, too.

Fans aren’t paying championship prices to hear another presentation about how difficult championships are to win. We know they’re difficult. That’s why the people entrusted with pursuing them need to be exceptional.

Judge deserves an organization willing to examine its own failures as seriously as it examines a player’s swing.

He deserves help. He deserves urgency. He deserves leadership willing to change course instead of defending the course that brought us here.

Back the captain. Demand better from the people building his team.

Cashman and Boone have had their opportunities. My vote is to move on from both and give Judge a championship plan shaped by fresh judgment.

Because the Yankees cannot keep selling greatness while asking everyone to lower the standard.

Fix the damn team.

STOP PAYING FOR THE SAME DAMN YANKEE FAILURE

2026-10-08T08:25:38.750-04:00

It's a Boone loss in the playoffs, because leaders need to lead when a team needs them most. But Boone can't lead. Boone can't close and worst of all, the fans? The fans are fed up. But I have bone to pick with the fans in this post... so read and you will see what I think for real.

Look, it's another October and it's another embarrassment. But we at Bleeding Yankee Blue told you this was going to happen. It's pathetic and obvious to everyone except Brian Cashman. Last night another team celebrating in the Bronx while the Yankees prepare to explain why the roster they assembled and the baseball, they played were not good enough.

The Rays finished the sweep last night, beating the Yankees 4–3. Ben Rice delivered an RBI single. Spencer Jones added an RBI double. New York fought back to tie it twice, then Victor Mesa Jr. hammered a two-run homer off Max Fried in the sixth. Anthony Volpe’s apparent tying homer became an RBI double after a fan-interference review. Volpe still had this high school demeanor about his like he was robbed by the umpires, but that's what happens when you get everything you want in your life without working hard to get it. But whatever, he shouldn't have even been in the line up. Bottom line, the Yankees never recovered. Season over.

And please, spare me the argument that one replay decision explains a three-game sweep.

This is the same bad movie, and the Yankees keep charging admission like they’ve produced a masterpiece.

Aaron Boone is a failed leader. A loser in the job this organization supposedly values most: delivering a championship. The stupidity is watching the failures pile up and continuing to treat his leadership as something worth protecting.

After the loss, Boone said, “We gotta be more complete offensively, defensively, pitching.”

What a stupid fuck. So… everything, Aaron? You talk to the press like an 11-year-old. Go away.

You manage a baseball team, and your October assessment is that it needs to improve at practically every part of baseball. What the hell are we preserving here?

Boone should lose his job. Fire this dope. There needs to be a consequence beyond standing at a microphone and explaining another failure.

But firing Boone while protecting Brian Cashman would leave the bigger problem sitting comfortably upstairs.

Cashman builds these teams. He owns the roster, the holes, and the assumptions that fall apart when the competition gets tougher. He cannot keep collecting credit for the talent while treating the weaknesses as somebody else’s responsibility. Cashman is more complacent this year than the last. I mean do you realize that both Cam Schlittler and Rice have succeeded better than any other player this year on the Yankees and it has NOTHING to do with Cashman? I mean, think about that for a second.

Yes, the Yankees reached the World Series in 2024. Nobody forgot. They also didn’t finish the job. A World Series appearance does not buy this front office permanent immunity from criticism.

How many chances does one executive get to solve the same problem?

And why does ownership keep acting as though replacing the people responsible would be more dangerous than keeping them?

Because the money keeps coming.

Fans bitch. Fans boo. Fans demand changes. Then fans reach into their pockets and pay this organization again. Why? Stop doing that.

The Yankees keep losing, and you keep spending your hard-earned money on the losers responsible. Tickets. Parking. Concessions. The whole expensive ritual. You work all week, pay the bill, and get another October explanation from people whose jobs somehow survive the results. You all know you didn't believe in this team. I surely didn't. Why? It's not the players guys, it's the front office. You don't give you a reason to believe, because the whole thing isn't baseball anymore with the Yankees... it's numbers. The Yankees are no longer the fun franchise to watch. Let's be honest, 2009 was fun, but the magic left in the 90's. Hard-nosed teams, where managers managed and players that sucked DID NOT PLAY even though the piece of paper in front of the manager had projections. Boone doesn't manage with his gut, he manages with what "could be" because the analytics told him so. How's that worked out since Boone's been in charge. WHAT A LOSER.

Look, be a fan however you like. Take your kids. Wear the jersey. Enjoy an afternoon at the Stadium. That is your choice.

But aren’t you noticing a pattern?

Your loyalty is unconditional. Their accountability barely exists.

The Yankees front office doesn’t care about you the way you care about the Yankees. That is how I see it. They know you love the history, the uniform, the memories. They know walking away from the spending feels like walking away from something personal.

And they benefit every time you confuse those two things.

I haven’t paid for a ticket to that ballpark in four years. That decision was made long before this latest embarrassment. The Yankees have spent those four years reinforcing it.

My money can no longer go to a loser. I work too damn hard to finance the same failure while the people responsible keep getting another opportunity.

At some point, loyalty becomes permission.

Permission to keep Boone. Permission to keep Cashman. Permission to sell championship expectations without delivering championship accountability.

They’re counting on you being furious today and buying tickets tomorrow.

That’s the business model: sell the history, collect the money, explain the failure. Repeat.

The fans deserve better. But ownership has little reason to fear our anger when our spending keeps rewarding its decisions.

THE MOMENT THE SPENDING STOPS IS THE MOMENT THE PRESSURE BECOMES REAL.

Let Boone explain another collapse to empty seats. Let Cashman pitch another roster to fans who have stopped buying the sales job. Let ownership discover what disappointment looks like on a balance sheet.

We’ve paid enough.

Make the failures expensive for the people responsible for them.

F this manager and front office. Happy winter. Let's go hunting.

DISGRACEFUL!

2026-10-07T23:13:57.067-04:00

Commentary tomorrow. I'm sick of it.

ONCE IS A MISTAKE, BUT TWICE AND BEYOND IS A PATTERN

2026-10-07T15:06:14.124-04:00

It sucks to suck, and that's exactly what the Yankees have established. It's dejavu all over again and it doesn't have to be. But the Yankees choose it because they like to suck more than they like to win, apparently. I just twitched violently as I typed that.

Year after year this team is plagued by awful fundamentals. The Yankees manage to lose. Keeping Aaron Boone and the front office in place is a losing strategy. The official box score says the Yankees were charged with four errors but let's be real that was six. One of those errors was miraculously called a hit by the official scorer and the other was saved by George Lombard Jr and Jazz Chisholm should bow down and praise him for saving his butt. This organization does not teach good fundamentals, and they certainly don't expect it out on the field. It's an afterthought for the Yankees as long as they can smash homeruns out of the park.

But that's not serving us well at all. We saw it against the Dodgers in the World Series two years ago and we haven't learned anything from it. Here we are two years later still beating ourselves and we did it against a very fundamentally sound team. That's what makes it worse. It's also what gives us another dose of harsh reality.

Good teams don't just ride a hot streak, they literally outplay everyone else and make inferior teams look stupid. That's everything we see with this Rays team. I've always said Kevin Cash is a good manager, and he is smart. The Rays play fundamental baseball and what makes it worse, they know how to create those pressure situations that make bad teams like the Yankees crumble. The Rays have created chaos, and the Yankees haven't overcome it. The Rays have a manager that knows what he is doing, and what other teams are not doing. He is the opposite of Aaron Boone and we are reminded of it yet again.

In MLB postseason history, only 10 out of 91 teams have ever come back to win a best-of-five series after losing the first two games. Coincidentally, the Yankees are the last team to do that back in 2017 but this isn't even a shadow of what that team was. Saying that really makes me miss "the good old days" because at least we weren't THIS tragically pathetic. Anything is possible but it is hard to have faith in this team with no Aaron Judge and weak players like Ryan McMahon, Chisholm and Austin Wells unnecessarily filling in the roster.

The Yankees need to change everything they do and think. It's time to turn things upside down. We've already endured 16 seasons of losses with no championships but Hal Steinbrenner hasn't understood our frustration. I wonder if this is the year it finally clicks and he gets it.....but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Please boys....show us something today. Don't just rollover and get eliminated at home. Please.

A LOT OF BOONE IMPROVEMENT PROMISES, BUT ALL THESE YEARS LATER, NOTHING CHANGES

2026-10-07T05:57:00.000-04:00

Yup, we don't forget.

Players have changed over the years, but one thing remains. Boone. And after the mistakes, he's not out there reprimanding them. Just a lot of talk to the press about how things need to get better, but the players do not.

What the Yankees did against Tampa Bay on Monday was an embarrassment.

Four errors. A 5–2 loss. A 2–0 deficit in a best-of-five division series. A team supposedly built to compete for a championship suddenly standing one loss from elimination because it could not handle the basic responsibilities of playing baseball. Catch the ball. Make the throw. Understand the situation. Give your pitcher a chance. It's your job.

Apparently, those expectations are too demanding.

We here at Bleeding Yankee Blue has been hammering this organization about leadership, accountability and fundamentals for years. The other night supplied another miserable example of why. The names change. The opponent changes. The calendar changes. The Yankees keep finding familiar ways to sabotage themselves.

And Aaron Boone keeps finding something to say afterward.

That is the part I cannot stomach anymore. There is always an explanation. Always another assurance. Always a suggestion that the Yankees understand what went wrong and will address it. Then another important game arrives, and the same problems show up wearing freshly washed pinstripes.

How many times are we supposed to buy this?

Boone kept Ryan McMahon in the lineup partly because he wanted “to prioritize the defense.” McMahon then mishandled a routine grounder on the second pitch of the game. Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s attempted double-play throw went astray. Austin Wells added catcher’s interference. Three official errors in the first inning.

Prioritize the defense?

The Yankees could barely survive it. Those were the opening moments of a playoff game. This was the preparation they brought to a night when they desperately needed to even the series.

By the end, the defensive damage extended beyond the four errors in the box score. There were additional misplays, including mistakes involving Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr. and Luis García Jr. Three unearned runs helped bury the Yankees.

Every one of those players has a responsibility to execute. Their mistakes belong to them. But the manager and his coaches have a responsibility to prepare a team that can perform under pressure. When these breakdowns keep resurfacing in important games, the people running that preparation deserve scrutiny.

Boone has had years to establish his standards. We are looking at the results. Cam Schlittler was left trying to navigate the mess around him. He departed after 4⅓ innings, charged with four runs, only two earned.

His outing was not flawless. He kept grinding. But his teammates made an already difficult assignment harder. Before making the pitching change in the fifth, Boone had watched his defense repeatedly compromise his starter.

I wanted to see Schlittler get a chance to work through that inning. Pulling him did nothing to repair the fielding behind him. George Lombard Jr.’s subsequent error extended the inning, and Richie Palacios delivered the two-run single that pushed Tampa Bay’s lead to 5–1.

Meanwhile, Ben Rice supplied two solo home runs. The rest of the lineup went a combined 2-for-28. Rice was trying to drag an entire offense across the finish line while the defense was busy digging a hole underneath it.

That is a hell of a way to approach October.

Afterward, Boone said:

“We’ve got to get over it.”

Of course they have to recover. There is another game to play.

But fans deserve something more substantial than the latest invitation to move past a disaster. We have been moving past these disasters for years. Eventually, somebody has to explain why the organization cannot stop producing them.

The history of these comments makes last night even harder to accept.

In 2022, Boone said of baserunning:

“It’s been a stronger point of emphasis from Day 1 of Spring Training.”

Good. It should be. But an emphasis has to become a habit. A habit has to survive a difficult game, a tight score and the pressure of October. Otherwise, the organization gets to announce its commitment every spring without ever being held responsible for whether that commitment lasts.

On July 5, 2024, after a loss to Boston, Boone said:

“We have to play clean baseball, especially when things are hard to come by. We’ve got to be better, period.”

I mean, no shit. Don't tell us, tell them! And while you're at it, make sure these players are doing what is needed! The context was maddening. Anthony Volpe failed to run hard enough from third to score before DJ LeMahieu was tagged at second. Because that final out was a tag rather than a force, getting home in time mattered. LeMahieu also could have prolonged the play with a rundown. The Yankees wasted an opportunity through poor execution and situational awareness.

Boone recognized the problem publicly. Recognizing it was the easy part. The harder responsibility was making that kind of baseball unacceptable—and producing a team that consistently demonstrated it understood why.

On July 8, 2024, CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa wrote:

“Simply put, they need to play cleaner baseball.”

Even the outside diagnosis had become familiar. There comes a point when “cleaner baseball” should stop appearing on the organization’s wish list and start describing the product on the field.

On February 14, 2025, Brian Cashman acknowledged the defensive problem:

“Defensively we were challenged in a lot of positions last year.”

He also said:

“I thought we were bad defensively.”

Cashman was discussing the offseason effort to improve run prevention after the 2024 World Series loss. He believed personnel changes would strengthen the defense and help the Yankees go further. That matters because this failure reaches above the manager. Cashman knew. The front office knew. The problem had been identified. Improving it was an organizational objective.

So nobody gets to act blindsided when fans demand answers about another October defensive collapse.

Then, in comments reported July 24, 2025, after another four-error game against Toronto, Boone said:

“Keep working at our fundamentals day in and day out and it will continue to get better.”

Read that again. Then think about last night.

The Yankees may conduct drills. Coaches may review video. Conversations may happen behind closed doors. We do not need to invent what happens inside the clubhouse to judge the effectiveness of the work.

The recurring failures are visible.

Whatever instruction and accountability exist have not produced a standard reliable enough to prevent another postseason embarrassment. That is the failure Boone and the front office have to answer for.

And I am tired of hearing their intentions presented as evidence of success. The same week as that Toronto debacle, Aaron Judge said:

“Going into this off day, we’ve got to refocus and tighten it up on defense.”

The captain could see it, too. At some point, all this tightening is supposed to hold. Instead, the Yankees keep arriving at the biggest moments with parts falling off.

Bleeding Yankee Blue was calling for change long before this latest disaster. On November 5, 2024, our senior managing editor, Jeana Bellezza-Ochoa, argued that the Yankees needed to move on from Boone and establish accountability after the World Series. Her criticism specifically addressed the team’s baserunning, fundamentals and leadership.

On July 24, 2025, BYB returned to the same issue in HOUSE OF HORRORS & LOSERS Jeana described recurring fundamental failures and challenged the protection Boone and the front office continued to receive.

The record is there.

I have been ahead of the curve on this argument, and BYB has kept making it when plenty of people preferred to dismiss the criticism as excessive. We were watching the habits. We were watching the excuses accumulate. We were asking why an organization with these resources continued to tolerate such unreliable execution.

Now, for those finally opening their eyes: welcome.

And shame on everyone who waved away the warning signs and treated concerned fans as the problem. You do not have to agree with every lineup criticism or bullpen complaint to recognize that repeated failures deserve more than another defense of the manager.

Being demanding about the Yankees is part of caring about the Yankees.

I care enough to say this plainly: Aaron Boone should be fired.

His public assurances have lost their credibility with me. A manager cannot keep promising improvement while his team repeatedly demonstrates the same vulnerabilities under pressure and expect unlimited patience...FOR YEARS.

The players need consequences for repeated lapses. Those consequences should be deliberate and consistent: corrective work, changes in roles, and playing time earned through execution. A respected veteran should face the same expectations as a rookie. Talent should come with responsibility.

Boone also needs to be judged by that standard. So do his coaches. So does Cashman.

A replacement manager will need authority to enforce expectations. The front office needs new decision-makers who will challenge unsuccessful practices and judge the organization by what it delivers. Hal Steinbrenner has to demand that change instead of signing off on another round of reassuring explanations.

The Yankees of the late 1990s, carrying into 2000, won four championships in five seasons under Joe Torre.

That is the seriousness this franchise should be trying to recover, but with a clown like Boone... forget it.

It requires preparation, trust, execution and the willingness to confront failure. Players can feel supported while being held responsible. A manager can remain composed while insisting on standards. Torre’s success should remind the Yankees that leadership is measured by the team it produces.

Last night, Tampa Bay kept putting pressure on New York. The Yankees kept giving that pressure somewhere to go.

Boone cannot throw away this game, retrieve another familiar phrase and expect the discussion to end. The discussion should reach his office, Cashman’s office and ownership.

I have no faith that the Yankees will win a World Series under this leadership. They have given me years of reasons to reach that conclusion. Another October collapse only strengthens it.

Fire Boone. Bring new leadership into the front office. Give the next manager the authority and responsibility to make disciplined baseball a daily requirement.

And hold everyone to it!

The Yankees have supplied enough statements about getting better. Their fans have earned the right to demand that they actually do it. The time is now, I am fed up.

FOUR ERRORS, ZERO BACKBONE & ANOTHER BOONE OCTOBER DISASTER

2026-10-06T07:49:00.875-04:00

Four errors. Two runs. One more loss and everybody can start packing.

The Yankees lost Game 2 to Tampa Bay, 5–2, and somehow the score makes this embarrassment look more respectable than it was. Down 0–2 in a best-of-five series, they looked outmatched, rattled and completely unprepared to handle the most basic requirement of postseason baseball: catch the damn ball.

Four errors in a playoff game is a disgrace. These are major leaguers playing for the New York Yankees, and they turned the field into an obstacle course for their own pitcher.

Cam Schlittler deserved better.

He was competing. He was giving this team a chance. But what good is getting a ball hit to a defender if you have to hold your breath waiting for the play to be made? Cam had ZERO SUPPORT FROM HIS TEAM IN THE FIELD, and the Yankees made his job harder with every mistake.

Then Aaron Boone removed him.

Why the hell did Boone think pulling Cam was a good idea?

Explain the baseball logic. Explain why the pitcher should lose the ball while the defense responsible for sabotaging his outing gets to keep fumbling through October.

To my eyes, Cam was doing what the Yankees needed: battling through a mess his teammates helped create. I wanted Boone to trust him to keep fighting. But Boone feels like he needs to tinker with stuff, like the PITCHER... when it's not the pitcher at all. The brilliant Rays put the ball in play. The Yankees don't play well defensively. By the way, WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOR 4 YEARS. It has never improved. And so yeah, Going to the bullpen didn’t fix anybody’s glove.

And afterward? The familiar Boone comfort blanket.

“A really rough night to say the least for us,” Boone said. “We’ve got to get over it. We’ve responded all year to difficult times and we’ve got to do it again.”

Statements like that only add fuel to the fire.

A “rough night” is traffic on the way home. Four errors when it matters with your season hanging in the balance demands something stronger than another reminder that everyone has bounced back before.

Where is the anger? Where is the accountability? Where is the manager willing to say this performance was unacceptable without immediately cushioning the landing?

Boone’s public response sounds soft just like him. He's a bad fucking leader. The decisions invite scrutiny, the team falls apart, and then we get another soothing explanation. Fans are furious, and he sounds ready to roll over and turn the page.

Meanwhile, the fantastic Tampa Bay Rays are turning the series into a rout.

The Yankees have one loss left to give. They need clean baseball, actual urgency and a manager whose decisions help them survive.

Because right now, the errors are embarrassing, the excuses are exhausting, and October is almost over. Oh yea, and Boone will screw this up... as predicted.

SOME PEOPLE DO STICK UP FOR BOONE! THEY MUST BE STUDIED.

2026-10-05T07:37:27.084-04:00

We've spent 9 seasons criticizing Aaron Boone. I think the only way we stop is when he is finally gone. That has to happen sooner or later, right? No one can live forever. That's what science has told us anyway. So since Baboonie isn't immortal and the Yankees aren't smart enough to fire him we can pretty much count on Baboonie doesn't go away because the Yankees finally fire him.

At this point, I can't imagine ever defending Baboonie. If I ever did, someone needs to have me examined because something is wrong with me. There's always at least one that goes against the grain though, right? Well NJ.com is defending Baboonie, you can check it out HERE. The closest I will ever get to defending Baboonie is to say that he did not hand pick Austin Wells to be the catcher of this team. He is stuck with him. Wells definitely screwed up game one, but given his track record it isn't a surprise.

Baboonie even went so far as to admit he screwed up. He gave him some tough criticism in his own Baboonie way so there is that. But why defend him at all? He doesn't need or warrant defending. If he actually won a championship the criticism would at least come with one gleaming moment of accomplishment that matters to all of us.

Instead, we have to listen to him defend dead weight like Wells and then strangely justify decisions not add Aaron Judge to the ALDS roster. I say strangely because he tried to use science to ssound smart and defend the thought process but it just falls flat. NJ.com went as far as to say Judge isn't close to being 100% yet....but one more week not rehabbing could get him there.

Come again? Seriously, am I the only one who thinks one week could be a difference maker? We've seen Giancarlo Stanton battle with an epidemic of strains for years now. One week never brought him close to 100% in the nine seasons he's been here. He's a constant walking strain! Baboonie has an example of the exact opposite thought process but the aging captain is somehow going to be different. It's Baboonie logic.

A Grade 2 strain takes 6 to 8 weeks to fully heal for all other professional baseball players not named Judge. When the ALCS starts on October 12th, Judge's rehab will be on day 26. That's not even four weeks IF the Yankees can even get there. I'm not against wishing for that once in a lifetime miracle....I just don't trust that Baboonie or the Yankees would recognize it happening.

So while anything is possible, I just don't understand defending Baboonie for anything, really. Anyone who does needs to be studied and possibly committed.

WELLS PLAYS HERO, BOONE’S OFFENSE PLAYS DEAD

2026-10-04T11:09:43.677-04:00

The Yankees lost Game 1 to Tampa Bay, 1-0, wasting five innings of one-run pitching from Gerrit Cole. Jonathan Aranda’s third-inning homer supplied all the scoring. Drew Rasmussen supplied the humiliation: eight innings, 10 strikeouts and one lousy hit.

Then Austin Wells decided he was trying to be a hero. With two outs in the eighth, he finally broke up the no-hitter—and promptly got thrown out stretching a double into a triple. He saw Luis Rojas’ stop signal after passing second and kept going. Congratulations: you rescued the Yankees from one embarrassment and drove them straight into another. Stay at second and give the next hitter a chance. That’s October baseball, not an audition for a highlight reel.

And Aaron Boone deserves scrutiny, too. He stacked the lineup with eight left-handed hitters, and Rasmussen carved it up. The supposed matchup advantage produced 23 swings and misses. At some point, having right-handed alternatives means actually considering a different look while there are still outs to work with.

Then Boone chose Giancarlo Stanton to pinch-hit for Ryan McMahon leading off the ninth—Stanton’s first plate appearance since April 24. He struck out. I understand betting on his October power, but asking a guy sidelined for five months to rescue a one-run playoff game is a hell of a gamble. Boone afterward said he liked the at-bat. Wonderful. Put that on the scoreboard.

Monday’s Game 2 has Cam Schlittler lined up to start. The Yankees need to give him actual run support and bring this series home tied. Expect pressure immediately: another loss means facing elimination in Game 3.

Boone needs better answers. Wells needs better judgment. And this lineup needs to remember that beating Boston didn’t finish the job.

WELLS BLOWS A LEGIT SHOT FOR THE YANKEES

2026-10-03T23:00:38.657-04:00

Austin Wells finally did something useful against Drew Rasmussen—and immediately found a way to wreck it.

Two outs. Eighth inning. Yankees down 1-0. Wells breaks up the no-hitter with a double, then gets thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Opportunity over. Inning dead.

Park your ass at second base.

You’re a catcher, Austin. You run like you’re dragging the equipment bag. Where exactly did this sudden belief in your blazing speed come from?

Austin Wells spoils Drew Rasmussen's no-no then gets HOSED at third 🤯 https://t.co/yIGAjlCHK3
— B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) October 4, 2026

The Yankees finally had a pulse, and Wells decided to unplug the monitor.

This was brutally dumb baseball. Second base already puts you in scoring position. With two outs, you’re running on contact. Give the next hitter a chance. That’s basic baseball awareness, and Wells apparently left his in the dugout.

Instead, he took the team’s precious opening and gambled it on legs that had absolutely no business making that bet.

Spare me “he was trying to make something happen.” Something had happened. You hit a double. Your next assignment was standing on a bag. Somehow, that proved too complicated.

The lack of speed was obvious. The lack of judgment was inexcusable.

Wells deserves credit for breaking up the no-hitter. Then he deserves to get absolutely roasted for turning a legitimate scoring chance into an inning-ending display of delusion.

You don’t have to be fast to help this team. You do have to be smart enough to know you aren’t.

HEY BOONE, DON’T SCREW THIS UP

2026-10-03T10:00:12.626-04:00

The Yankees swept Boston, and I enjoyed every second of it. Now comes the harder part: beating Tampa Bay without turning their own dugout into the Rays’ greatest competitive advantage.

These Yankees—the misfits as I call them, the guys I’ve questioned all summer—have given us something worth rooting for. They handled the Wild Card round without Aaron Judge. Austin Wells contributed. Spencer Jones contributed. Suddenly, a lineup that too often looked like a collection of separate problems started playing like a team.

I want these misfits to win the whole damn thing.

That doesn’t mean Brian Cashman gets a summer’s worth of criticism erased by two October victories. I’m still tired of roster construction built around gambles, injury recoveries and the assumption that somebody will eventually figure it out. I still question the evaluations, the patience afforded certain players and the habit of selling hope as a strategy.

But the players have an opportunity now. Let them take it.

Tonight starts with Gerrit Cole. Game 1 begins at 6:30 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field, with Cole facing Drew Rasmussen. Tampa went 55–26 at home, so walking into that building and expecting Boston’s surrender to carry over would be a mistake.

Cole brings a 10–9 record, a 3.61 ERA and 131 strikeouts. Rasmussen counters with 16–5, a 2.67 ERA and 174 strikeouts. Those numbers should get everyone’s attention.

Cole is rested. Now he needs to be sharp. There’s unfinished business after Tampa eliminated the Yankees in the 2020 ALDS, but revenge doesn’t retire hitters. First-pitch strikes, command and keeping the ball in the park do. Junior Caminero, Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda cannot be allowed to turn every inning into traffic.

And against Rasmussen, the Yankees need useful at-bats. Make him work. Move runners. Take the available run instead of waiting for the three-run homer that might never arrive.

Then there’s Wells. I’ve criticized him plenty, and his regular-season bat earned those questions. I really don't think he's good, but maybe he's on a hot streak. He had a good Wild Card series, and he deserves credit. In Game 1 alone, he delivered two hits, drove in a run and scored another while helping the Yankees pitchers overwhelm Boston.

Trent Grisham? I appreciate what he can provide offensively. I’m still watching him in the field. Does he take the right route? Make the clean play? Keep an extra base from becoming an extra run? October defense has to withstand scrutiny, especially against a team willing to pressure every small mistake.

And is Aaron Judge even necessary in this series?

It’s a provocative question, but the roster decision deserves one. A healthy Judge makes this team better. A limited Judge returning from a strained right calf presents a different calculation. Entering today, his availability remained uncertain, with a possible pinch-hitting role under consideration.

If he can help, use him. If he cannot run or defend effectively, don’t rearrange a functioning lineup simply because the biggest name is available. The misfits just showed they can win together. Respect that.

Ryan Weathers’ potential addition to the ALDS bullpen presents another test. I’ve questioned the Cashman gamble there, too. Making the roster is one thing; being ready for a tight October inning is another. Boone needs to know the difference.

Behind Cole, Cam Schlittler is slated for Monday’s Game 2, with Carlos Rodón and Max Fried the likely options when the series reaches New York. Those Bronx assignments remain unconfirmed, but there is enough pitching here to make this a real fight.

Which brings us to the question every Yankee fan eventually asks:

Will Boone mess this up?

Will he recognize when his starter is finished? Choose the reliever suited to the inning? Let productive players play? Or will we spend tomorrow discussing a decision everyone could see going wrong before it happened?

Manage the game in front of you, Aaron. Give these guys their best chance.

I’m rooting for Wells to keep hitting, Grisham to make every play, Cole to own the opener and the kids to keep bringing life into this team. But, Rasmussen is tough... and the Rays are home.

Let the misfits win.

I’d love nothing more than to spend November explaining how they proved me wrong.

THE MISFITS OWNED BOSTON. PORTNOY CRIES.

2026-10-02T08:09:56.910-04:00

The Yankees absolutely flattened the Red Sox, and I enjoyed every glorious second of it.

A 9–0 win in Game 1. A 9–2 win in Game 2. Eighteen runs to two across a two-game sweep. Boston showed up for October baseball and wound up participating in a Yankees batting demonstration. Somebody should have offered them continuing education credits.

There’s something deeply satisfying about watching your biggest rival get sent home before its fans have finished explaining why this is finally their year.

And yet, somehow, Dave Portnoy came away concerned about the Yankees’ champagne consumption.

The Barstool founder and professional Boston grievance distributor posted this:

“The Yankees celebrating a wild card series win with champagne just shows how far that franchise has fallen. Very embarrassing.”

Dave, your team just got swept. Perhaps start the embarrassment inspection in your own clubhouse.

Now, before anyone mistakes me for the president of the Aaron Boone Appreciation Society, let me be clear: I’m a true-blue Yankees fan, and I thought the celebration after merely clinching a wild-card berth was ridiculously stupid.

On that principle, I agree with Portnoy. Making the playoff field shouldn’t have me wondering whether somebody accidentally ordered the World Series celebration package. Shake hands. Enjoy dinner. Save a few bottles for an actual accomplishment.

But eliminating the Red Sox in a playoff series? After beating them like that?

Pop the cork. I loved it.

There’s a difference between celebrating your invitation and celebrating after you’ve kicked your biggest rival out of the party. These Yankees earned a moment to enjoy themselves.

Look, champagne celebrations are routine when teams advance in the postseason. And Boston was good, and Boston’s strong second-half push ended with the Yankees sweeping them without Aaron Judge playing in the series. That’s a rough combination for a Red Sox fan trying to lecture anybody about standards.

Boston couldn’t beat the Yankees without their biggest bat, but Dave would like a congressional hearing on the beverages. Wonderful priorities.

And here’s the funny part: I’m defending a team in this 2026 Yankees club I still haven’t fully fallen in love with. I know, crazy right?

Look, it bothers me. These are my Yankees. I should feel more attached. Instead, too often I watch them with the emotional posture of a homeowner waiting to find out what the contractor broke.

A lot of that, for me, comes back to Boone. I think he’s a poor leader. I want a manager whose team looks prepared, focused and accountable. Too often, I’m left wondering whether the next explanation will make me more annoyed than the mistake did.

Then there’s the group itself.

They remind me nothing of the Core Four. I don’t get that feeling I associate with the 1978 Yankees, either. Those teams have a permanent place in my baseball soul. This bunch still feels like a collection assembled from three different rosters and a handwritten notice outside a hardware store...and you know I'm right. That's why I call them the New York Misfits.

Minor leaguers. Big leaguers. A couple of guys who look like they could finish framing your garage before heading over to the beer league. I half expect somebody to ask whether the postseason shares include mileage for the work van.

It’s a weird group. They haven’t given me that automatic emotional connection just because they wear pinstripes. I’m rooting like hell, but I’m still waiting for the moment when rooting turns into believing.

Well, destroying Boston was a pretty good sales pitch. For two games, these misfits gave me exactly what I wanted: winning baseball and a thoroughly miserable Red Sox fan base. I don’t need everybody to remind me of an old champion when they’re busy sending Boston home. Keep doing that and we can work on the relationship.

Portnoy, meanwhile, sounds like a guy standing outside a restaurant complaining that the people inside are enjoying dessert. Would I expect Boston to celebrate if the roles were reversed? Absolutely. And I’d hate watching it. That’s the privilege of being a rival fan. You can be aggravated without pretending you’re the commissioner of champagne.

The Yankees now move on to Tampa Bay, which finished with the American League’s best record and let's face it, they are a better team than the Yankees. Now, the Yankees are hoping to have Judge back for that series. But I wonder, do we need him? This rag-tag group seems to be doing great.

Look, I want to see these misfits win again. Beat the Rays. Give me another reason to yell at the television in a way the neighbors can actually enjoy.

Maybe this oddball collection will grow on me. October has a way of making a fan sentimental about people he spent September threatening to trade.

For now, enjoy the win, BYB freaks. And Yanks? You earned this celebration.

And Portnoy? Shove it, buddy. Go back to Boston.

Your team can pick you up. They’re free.

SWEEP DREAMS IN THE BRONX!

2026-10-01T09:26:23.962-04:00

The fat lady is singing and it's OVER! Boston can go back home and drink some Samuel Adams and start making their reservations on the golf course. As my boss likes to say, "it sucks to suck" and boy does Boston suck.

Losing is never easy but it hurts even more when the Yankees don't have Aaron Judge on the roster and they still spanked the Red Sox! That could've been an advantage for the Red Sox because we have all seen how different this team can be when there is no Judge but Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger stepped up and took care of business.

But that didn't matter. Even without Judge, the Yankees out scored Boston 18-2 and the starters had a miniscule 0.73 ERA. Cam Schlittler and Max Fried shut Boston down! It's the second year in a row the Yankees stomped Boston in the Bronx. The Yankees outplayed Boston in every aspect of the game. It's one thing to not be at full strength, and both sides arguably had some holes but the Yankees had more holes. The Red Sox had a door to walk through, but they couldn't make it happen. It was shut in their faces! Boston was lifeless and they had plenty of mistakes mixed in that it was their own downfall. Chad Tracey made some interesting decisions this series, and it didn't pay off. Now the Red Sox need to do a lot of self reflection. They didn't look like the same team that was breathing down the Yankees neck the second half of the regular season.

When the Yankees hit and pitch on all cylinders this team CAN beat anyone. If the Yankees continue to play the way they did in this series, they can beat Tampa in the ALDS, but they have to be consistent. They have to carry this into Saturday and they can't get complacent.

So for now, I am going to enjoy this moment. We've been waiting to see this team click on all cylinders like this. It's a nice victory, but Tampa is next. The work is not done yet but it feels freaking fantastic to beat Boston. How SWEEP it is!

To the Boston fan who heckled me in the breakroom yesterday....I am lookin for ya! Watch out.

SCHLITTLER DEALS, RICE FEASTS & BOSTON CHOKES

The Yankees beat Boston 9–0 in Game 1, and nothing improves a postseason evening quite like watching the Red Sox run out of answers.

Cam Schlittler was outstanding: 6⅓ scoreless innings, two hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Boston couldn’t get a runner past first against him. That’s command. That’s confidence. That’s a pitcher giving his teammates every reason to believe they’re winning tonight.

Then Ben Rice grabbed the spotlight and practically ripped it off the ceiling. Four hits. Two homers. Six RBIs. His fifth-inning solo shot created breathing room; his eighth-inning grand slam sent Boston looking for the exits. What a night for a guy who keeps giving this lineup some serious muscle.

And give Austin Wells his credit. All of it. His second-inning RBI single put the Yankees ahead before this became a blowout. Behind the plate, his successful challenge turned a first-inning pitch into an inning-ending strikeout. Later, his sacrifice fly brought home another run. Those contributions matter, and a monster night from Rice shouldn’t bury them. When Wells delivers, say so.

George Lombard Jr. added three hits and scored twice, while Paul Blackburn’s seventh-inning double play stopped Boston’s chance to make things uncomfortable.

Now comes the test: finish it. Max Fried gets the ball against Sonny Gray in Game 2. Keep the pressure on, keep getting contributions throughout the lineup, and make Boston’s stay in the Bronx a short one.

The Yankees and Boone had a mediocre lineup yesterday that played better than I expected, but they were banking on Cam to dominate and he did. Tonight, we need to see if Gray will choke in the Bronx like he did when he was on the team. Gray's better than he used to be... more confident. So... it will be a big test.
