Solar panels barely work well enough to power the Mars rovers.

Most spacecraft sent to the outer solar system and to interstellar space either have batteries or are nuclear powered.

Just think though...it gets worse. If you think Jupiter exploration spacecraft have it bad...an interstellar spacecraft has it...um...I don't know...27000 times worse, as that is how many Jovian perihelions it is to half way to the nearest star. And oh...there is the inverse square law, so that is really 76 billion times worse.
Modern Solar power technology is still considered not efficient
enough to satisfy our power need on earth. So there is no way
that it will power a ship for space travel. But there are other way
Right now we are looking at several option:

1-Nuclear Fusion
What if we could create our own sun ?
Achieving a nuclear fusion will allow us to produce
a power source almost unlimited that could power space ship.
A small fusion reactor could power a shuttle as big as the empire
state for year in space.

2-Antimatter
Finding how to control antimatter is the key to our energy crisis.
Imagine whole city, space station, shuttle pretty much anything
can be powered by antimatter. But the challenge is how to produce it and control it.

I think in the future we will find a way.

Solar Power and Photovoltaic Cell

One major issue with the use of solar cells is the high initial cost although costs have declined greatly as compared to the initial days of the solar cells with the advancement in technology and mass production. Another obvious drawback is the reliability when depends on natural factors and hence not within the total control of human beings. Yet this problem can be minimized by using the solar cell setup not independently but integrated with a grid which draws power from other sources as well. Silicon by itself is not a very good conductor of electricity. In order to be used in a solar cell , silicon must be modified, or "doped," with other elements. Phosphorous and boron are the elements of choice for this purpose. A layer of silicon doped with phosphorous can take advantage of the fact that the latter element only has one electron in its outermost electron shell. This is the electron that can be knocked off by light energy. Photovoltaic cells are devices that produce electricity directly from sunlight. Many photovoltaic cells put together form a solar array or solar panel . These cells convert light into electricity by harnessing the energy created when photons from sunlight knock electrons into a higher state of energy, within the cell itself. Photovoltaic cells are composed of layered materials which include two types of silicon , an anti-reflective coating, and a glass cover.

Solar Power Facts

For some people living in remote areas, solar power is one of the alternatives to having electricity in areas shunned by utility companies as they may be seen as costing too much to supply power for only one customer. Gas or diesel powered generator can also used to produce electricity, but maintaining a constant supply of fuel is sometimes difficult as well as creating a dangerous storage situation.

What some folks may not realize is that while installing solar power to many areas may be high, the return is also high without the need to pay an energy company to provide power to their home. Even using it to help reduce their electric costs can be a cost savings over its life span. Additionally, many incidental uses of solar power are now available for which this technology can show an almost instant savings in the cost of labor alone.

Solar power is now a viable alternative to traditional power sources. Solar power converts the sun's energy into a pollution-free source of heat, light and electricity. Solar power can slash utility bills for both residential and commercial consumers. Solar power was available yesterday, it's available today and hopefully it will be available for us in the future. Solar power is one of the leading sources of alternative energy, and many countries are starting to produce it on a mass scale. Solar power may now be considered one of the top alternative ways of having your own source of electrical energy without having to pay your monthly electric bills which Solar power can slash utility bills for both residential and commercial consumers.can be costly most of the time. However, solar power cannot be achieved without sacrificing a bit of your savings. Most internet solar power retailers have lots of free information online, including system sizing spreadsheets. For several years the use of solar power has been growing to provide electricity with low-power requirements, powering such devices as traffic signals in out of the way locations as well as offering portability for military uses.
