Little Miss turned five yesterday.

I can hardly stand it.

Yes, the 10 yr old does this every chance he gets when I get the camera out.

Kinda annoying. lol

This was the special birthday treat we sent to school.

The jumbo 'smarshmallows' dipped in chocolate with sprinkles.

This was the cake I made for us.

I used cake mix and my own fav frosting, but the rest was the same.

We ate it in our jammies right before bed (we waited for the boys who were at basketball practice).

A star snack

Today she got to bring a favorite snack.

After brainstorming, we came up with these.

Woodland party invitation

Planning a Woodland creature party for Maressa's upcoming birthday.
Brainstorming has been SO fun!
I've got a ton of things pinned, of which I could not possibly do all of.
We are going to play in a 'forrest'. Decked out in bday decor.
Paint birdhouses and read books about funny squirrels.
Maybe even a cool 'sensory' table. And play scavenger hunt.

For those of you who also don't bat an eyelash to use an insane amount of effort and time to make cute party invitations, I used the above cricut cartidge.

I used it to make the owls and deer. Then I printed the details on blue cardstock.

Glued it all down on this adorable tree printed paper I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby.

Preparations

Somebody is about to have a birthday.

I'm gearing up for an adorable woodland creature party.

Finishing up the invitations today and will share next week.

It is M's turn as star student for her school class this week.

Part of the fun is to take home this stuffed dog and keep a diary/take pics of your time together.

This morning we went to run our Friday errands.

Gotta love 4/5 yr old girl style.

It's not always pink. lol

We went to the car wash first.

I can't tell you how badly I've been wanting to go.

But when it rains most of the days for weeks, chances are slim.

Then there was my surgery last week.

Today I felt up to the rigorous vacuuming involved....that's the best deal of the $6 car wash is unlimited vacuuming!

I'm a little manic when it comes to my van.

Maressa is NOT a fan of the car wash.

She sits up front with me and we blast our fav music.

She was SO good though and very patient with my tedious vacuuming.

lol

At the grocery store I surprised her with a favorite treat. :)

As far as my surgery, I'm slowly getting better.

I still get tired quickly and retreat to my fav cozy recliner soon after dinner. :)

I really plan to move past with so many random posts soon.

And get some crafting and sewing tutes soon!

I want to get a few skirts done for the girls.

Maressa a cute, simple skirt with pockets.

Will post when I do.

For Valentines day I don't even have to be creative this year.

I'm simply going to borrow someone else's.

Just a little loopy

Hello everybody.
Just a little post to fill you in.
Lot of little things going on this past week.
First internet went down. It's still not right and we can't get the wireless to work.

Then guinea pig got sick.

Gus stopped eating and drinking at some point this past week.
He's just pitiful. Vet can't find what's wrong at the moment without a bunch of random and expensive tests.
So I am syringe feeding him for now and see if he doesn't get better.
Fun fun! :) It's actually not that bad and they kids think it is just adorable.

I got the closet done. Organization bliss.

Much better! May add a peg board on the wall in there too.

Oh and lastly, I had surgery yesterday. I was going to blog about it before, but we had connection issues.
I had my yucky gall bladder removed. I hear I will feel much better.
Yesterday was rough at some points. Pain medicine is good.
Speaking of if this post makes no sense, I am heavily medicated at the moment. lol
But it does the job. My hubby got up to find me making waffles for the kids this morning.
He thought I had lost my mind.
I have a little with this medicine...but there were only 2 egg casualties. :)

Should be back in a few days and hopefully a little more coherent.

For now I'm going to go watch a movie with Maressa while all the other kids are at basketball.

Our family message center

This was my last project. We have this little area between our foyer and living room.

It did have a desk. Major hot spot.

It never stayed clean and was always piled high with mess.

So I got rid of it!

Then I thought it would be fun to paint the whole wall in chalkboard paint.

Added a metal sheet for a magnet board.

Each kid has a metal clip for important school papers.

This relieved the overflow on the front of the refridgerator.

Underneath is a strip of hooks for backpacks.

And for fun I added this ballon dry erase message area.

Inspired by this pin, I could not find the paper, but made my own.

I simply used the black and white dotted paper and printed up a bunch of conversation balloons on Publisher and cut them out and taped them on the dotted paper.

The kids have enjoyed writing messages to each other on it.

Here are some pictures after I finally let them use the area (ie chalk all over it).

We have really enjoyed this space and no more clutter!

Random Friday

I didn't get around to doing a photo a day this week.

Nor did I get around to blogging.

Sorry.

Those Monday holidays really threw me off.

Tuesdays are really busy.

Then the week rolls by really fast.

Now it's Friday.

This little chick is my regular Friday sidekick.

I'm going to really miss our days together next year when she goes to kindergarten.

OH speaking of, my baby is turning 5 in a month.

Not sure I can handle it.

Especially on top of it being my 'last' birthday...you know the one.

We don't need to mention it further.

There will be awesome cake though.

Last Friday in a long series of running errands with said sidekick, I finally got a new bible.

And a pretty one too!

I prefer the NASB and my 11 yr old one was falling apart and missing some chapters in Genesis.

Time for a new one.

Was so happy to find one in turquoise!

I am participating in a fabulous ladies study on James. It is a Beth Moore study.

Never done one of her studies before, but I'm impressed!

I just finished the first project of the year (not pictured) and will share it on Monday.

Here is the beginning of project #2.

The craft closet.

It used to be a very small half bath before the previous owners remodeled.

So it's a nice sized closet.

But I really hate painting these kind of doors.

But every time I see this post pinned on Pinterest, I cringe of the ugly putty color (I painted the outside, but lazily left the inside).

This is about half of what came out...spread all over my dining room.

I now painted the inside of the closet.

Over the wallpaper.

I just didn't have it in me to peel anymore wallpaper in this house!

But this will do.

Maressa happily kept me company while coloring.

Then a coffee cake break.

I was getting a little high from the fumes in that tiny space!

This year we have 3 kids playing basketball.

We do Upward.

Three games tomorrow morning.

Matt coaches all three!

Next project.

Craft room clean out.

Hoping to fit some stuff in the closet as this small room is busting at the seams!

Angry Bird legos

One morning I woke up to find a whole flock of angry birds made with legos.

The 10 yr old made them.

I was quite impressed by the detail he went into making them!

And they are giant! lol

The white one is quite heavy.

Since then, he's made a small red one and one small piggy that he stacked inside his little sister's blocks to play his own game.

Funny, I had planned on making this for them.

But I guess he kinda beat me to it!

the waffle maker=breakfast changing

I got a waffle maker for Christmas.

It was a requested item I've wanted for some time.

It has been even more life changing than expected.

I made room for it on the counter even. :)

No more burnt pancakes.

No more gooey pancake centers.

No more hovering over a frying pan with spatula in hand.

No more worrying about kid distractions.

See that little light there on the left?

It tells me all I need to know.

It tells me when it's hot enough for the waffles.

It tells me when they are cooked perfectly.

I can make eggs and bacon,

wipe up spills,

refill milks,

set the table so we can all sit together like civilized people,

check morning email,

or sip on coffee like a lady of leisure

and I all have to do is keep my eye on that little light.

And then I have perfect waffles.

And the smell.

My Papaw made waffles when we visited.

Stacks that went a couple of feet high.

One of my fav memories of my grandparents was the warm kitchen bustling with breakfast fixings and the smell of waffles.

AND they had squeezy butter. Do they even make that anymore?

The inaugural batch of waffles were our 'birthday' waffles adapted from the birthday pancakes the kids love so much.

(Birthday pancakes/waffles=mini choc chips and big ice cream type sprinkles in the batter.)

And the kids approved!!

On the weekends I make a triple batch and store them in the refrigerator and then toast them on school days.

No more icky 'yellow' frozen waffles.

OK, so all you people who knew this awesomeness called a waffle maker long ago,

share your recipes and tips.

I was so excited and tried to make waffle brownies as I thought I've seen that done before.

I figured it would be no more than make brownie mix and pour it in and cook.

Well, that was a big fat FAIL.

Sadly.

Someone tell me how to do this! :)

Ok, one more breakfast changing tip I got on Pinterest.

I'm sure you've all seen it.

Oven baked bacon.

Except I broil mine.

And these beautiful center cut pieces come out crispy and flat.

Which apparently my children have become bacon snobs?

They won't eat it fried and wrinkled up anymore.

But that's ok, with as much as a family of 6 bacon loving folks, this is far more efficient.

Oh and don't do like I did above and mark up your cute Target lime green cookie sheet and line it with foil first.

A photo a day

For Christmas Santa brought me a new lens.

Last year he brought me photography lessons.

Now that I know how to use all the buttons on my camera and have a proper lens for indoor photos, I've got a lot of practicing to do.

For me, I love photography.

I love taking pictures....lots of them.

Of everything.

But I have no illusions of grandeur so getting paid to do so...lol

I do it for me.

Anyway, I've decided to see if I can do a photo a day.

Just one of something random in our day.

The above photos are of last week.

I don't want to bore you all with these daily, so I'll just put them in a collage and share on Fridays.

Just a few notes on my pictures above.

Zachary actually took the one of me and Micah...I fixed the settings on my camera and let him shoot, then I edited them.

Kalla's bball picture...this is her very first game ever. She finally got brave enough to try this year. :)

All photos are taken with my new 50mm except the bball where I have to use a zoom.

Hello there.

It's so hard to get back into routine!

We had a 2.5 week break.

I'm still out of sorts.

Kids went back just 2 days last week.

Been meaning to get back here, but the clean out/organization bug has hit big time.

And I've been obsessing over the next birthday here.

Maressa's having a woodland creature party.

Have lots of stuffed pinned for it. :)

Can't wait to tell you more about it!

Going to bust out the Cricut and get the invites done soon.

We had a super good Christmas here.

Easy globe ornament

We made these fun ornaments in a couple of the kids holiday parties at school.

I was inspired by this one on Parents.com, and changed it up a tiny bit.

I used small paper plates and clear punch cups.

I traced the cups on the plates and cut out the circles.

Then used glue dots or hot glue to adhere the miniatures to the plate.

You can use any tiny miniatures.

I had these trees on hand and tiny reindeer and ballerinas I had used once on cupcakes.

I even used some snowman cupcake picks and just broke off the pick part.

After the miniatures are secure, we used craft glue around the edge of the plate.

Using a sharp needle, I threaded bakers twine in the top of the plastic cup.

Then I placed a small handful of plastic fake snow in the cups.

Then I placed the plate with glue on top of the cup.

Let the glue set.

Then turn it right side up.

If you want to add a pipe cleaner trim, put glue around the outside edge of the cup.

Regular pipe cleaners are just the right size.

Put ends together and over lap just a tiny bit and twist together forming a circle.

Place circle over the cup and push to the bottom onto the glue.

The most fun is you can shake it and the loose snow moves around.

Maressa's 4 yr old class and Micah's first grade class loved making these!

Christmas Cowboy Cookies

I've heard of the cowboy cookie before, but never made them.

Intrigued by the hearty ingredients, I finally decided to try them.

We had a church thing this past Sunday of which I volunteered to make cookies for kids for after we went caroling so this was a perfect opportunity to bake them.

I used this recipe and altered it slightly.

Instead of chocolate chips, I used red and green M&M's and omitted the nuts.

They turned out thick and chewy just like I was looking for.

Coconut was just enough for me to enjoy, but not enough that small children shall detect it. ;)

I would probably add just a bit more next time.

I may have enjoyed some leftovers with my morning coffee.

They do have oatmeal after all. ;)

A Christmas twirly dress-and a semi tutorial

I made this dress for Maressa to wear to her Christmas preschool performance and party today.
I used to make cute things for the girls to wear for every single holiday occasion.
I've gotten lazy.
And honestly, Kalla is almost 8.5 and kinda past the cutsie holiday wear (however I did promise an applique tree shirt for her party this Friday) and Maressa gets all the tons of hand-me-downs from holiday past.
This year I made Maressa a new dress to match her personality.
Nothing fancy.
Just used a plain white tee from her closet and let her pick some fabrics from my old stash.

Sorry there is not a full tutorial on this particular dress.

For those who want to know how to make your own twirly 3-tier dress of your own, I can guide you through the process.

First start here for a regular t-dress tutorial.
To make it with twirly tiers, instead of one big skirt piece you'll need to cut 3 pieces.
This can be all the same fabric or different ones.
You'll want to make the 3 pieces to add up to the length of dress you want.
For example, Maressa generally wears a 5/6 size store dress (I like them plenty long).
I made her 3 pieces with the length of 7" 8" and 7". You'll need to account for .5" on each edge for attaching to the other fabrics, bottom hem and to the shirt.
For this dress, I did the top tier the width of the fabric...selvage to selvage.
For the next tier I did the width 1.5 times that width and the bottom 1.5 times the width of the middle tier.

So if for example your fabric is 40" wide you will need the following strips to make a 5/6 size dress:
7" x 40"
8" x 60"
7" x 90"
For the middle and bottom strips you will need to sew together pieces to make the widths.
**Adjust lengths to fit different sizes.**
To know how long it should be total, I use a dress out of her closet that fits like I want to get my total finished length.

Tips:
Start from bottom up.
Sew your bottom tier strips together, serge/overlock edges, then hem the very bottom.
Gather the bottom tier and sew to middle tier.
Gather middle tier and sew to top tier.
Now gather and sew skirt to t-shirt.
Serge or overlock edges as you go.
Topstitch tiers once finished for nice look and dress to lay nicely.

Now hand to your very happy little girl for much twirling pleasure!

Kids Art Ornament

Maressa, 4 yrs, wanted to make a special gift for a very good friend of hers at school.

They've been bffs since meeting in 3 yr old class last year.

I guided her into making a cute ornament.

I figured that way, her friend can remember her early friendship even when they will part ways.

I was inspired by these adorable ornaments

(will do the self portrait idea with all the kids for grandparent gifts too).

I had gathered these mini embroidery hoops maybe last year?

So we had all materials on hand...the best kind of DIY.

Maressa was set on making a fairy. And something sparkly with glitter.

Before we started I had her practice her fairy drawing on a piece of paper.

Then I cut some soft white twill fabric.

Then I traced the inner hoop with a fabric crayon on the fabric and taped it down.

I gave her fabric crayons to draw her picture and color it in.

Then I used a paint brush to brush on fabric glue and let Maressa sprinkle on fabric glitter.

Then I used fabric markers to add the Merry Christmas and the to and from.

It was a simple and quick project and turned out just adorable.

She can't wait to give it to her friend tomorrow.

DIY Gifts your kids can make

And sometimes my kids want to give their friends a gift. I don't mind, but we do homemade gifts in those cases.

I was thinking this idea could be turned into a cute 'Best Friends' shirt or something else cute and tween girlie.

Fairy wand.

Maressa made an adorable ornament to give to her very best friend this afternoon.

Homemade Honey Almond Oatmeal Soap Bars

I made these delicious bars of soap for party favors for my holiday party.

Honey Almond Oatmeal.

SUPER easy to make.

And best part is my friends report they are fabulous!

This is all that is needed.

I used goats milk soap, but you can use any white glycerin soap.

Hobby Lobby carries plenty.

I also got the Honey Almond fragrance in the soap section there.

I like to use my glass measuring cup to melt the soap.

I cut about 6 cubes from the soap and microwaved it for 1 minute and 30 seconds on high.

Then add about 18 drops of fragrance and 1/2 C oats to melted soap and stir.

***Edited to add that I would change the oatmeal amount down to 1/4-1/3 C.

Half cup seemed a bit much. Or you could also give it a whirl in the food processor to bring the texture down just a notch.***

For these simple bars I poured the soap into a lined pan but you could use a mold.

This pan took about five batches of the soap poured on top of each other to get a proper thickness.

Then when the soap is firm pull it out of the pan and peel the plastic wrap off the bottom and sides.

It doesn't take long for the soap to become firm, but if you are in a hurry, you can speed up the process by sticking it in the freezer.

Now you can slice it into bars.

To make them all straight edges you can cut off the outer edges as well.

Then for gift giving, I wrapped them in parchment paper and tied with baking string.

I still have a few bars left over and will be putting them with our teacher gifts.

These would make wonderful gifts that the kids can help with too.

I love to involve my kids in making gifts for their teachers.

Tomorrow I'll round up my favorite teacher gifts that you can make together with your kids.

3rd Annual Cocoa & Crafts Party

This past weekend I had my annual Christmas party.

It's a girl's night out kinda thing.

No kids, just friends hanging out with lots of yummy food and some crafting.

This year's menu was pretty simple.

Veggies n dip, fresh fruit, chocolate dipped homemade marshmallows, mini chocolate chocolate cupcakes and my new love, red velvet brownies.

Also, these fabulous sausage balls, ham n cheese croissant pinwheels and hot spinach dip.

Hot chocolate bar with fixings and Cokes in a bottle for refreshments.

Crafts were making mini yarn wreaths and mod podge ornaments.

Favors were homemade honey almond oatmeal soap bars.

How-to for those tomorrow. :)

Sparkly Christmas Card holder

I know I've posted many different ways to hang and display all those

Christmas cards you get over the holidays.

But this one I love best and I believe will be a keeper!

You may recognize this frame I picked up at a thrift store and made into a bulletin board.

I don't remember why I took that down and changed my mind.

But this worked out perfectly.

This was a quick and easy project.

I took a really large empty frame and simply used a staple gun to attach wired

star garland across the back.

Being that it's not Dec yet, I haven't received any cards yet (need to get working on my own!) so I used these vintage postcards from Anthro for display.

To attach them I used small clothespins with craft buttons glued on top.

Crafty Christmas Houses

I think these are my favorite Christmas crafts yet.

Easy, cheap and involves glitter. :)

I kept my houses pretty simple.

You of course could bling them up a lot more.

Also, I like to put a battery operated votive inside and they make them have a nice glow.

First I started with these paper mache houses I got at Hobby Lobby.

Super super cheap. I think the large was $5.99 maybe.

Find them in the regular paper mache aisle instead of the Christmas aisle.

I started by painting them with craft paints.

A couple I left plain on the roof.

The large one, I glued down some scrap book paper.

The smaller one I glued buttons on the roof.

Then I also glued paper to the floors and back wall.

And finally the glitter.

For the plain roof houses I brushed on thick amounts of mod podge and glitter.

For the paper covered roof, I brushed the glue on all the edges and in the crevices of the roof where snow would likely stick.

For the button roof I did the same for the edges and top of the chimney.

For the largest house I also glued a little green wreath with a red yarn bow.

Added some white bottle brush trees (from Walmart) and a little snow bling.

Mantel done.

We're stuffed and happy.

It was a beautiful day.

Family in town including husband's grandma the kids call GiGi.

And only one cousin to go around to share with the four.

That is about all I know of that 'popular' song, but it gets stuck in my head every Friday. :)

I love Friday's. ( I love Monday's too. I know I'm weird.)

Today is actually on the cool side.

Rocking my momfit of fleece sweatpants and puffy vest.

Loving the smell of lit fireplaces in the air.

So here is a glimpse of our Friday.

Little Miss Maressa is home with me on Fridays.

Love me some little girl thick tights and boots.

Today we went shopping.

One of our favorite places to go together is Target.

We had a birthday gift to get and did some Christmas shopping as well.

I LOVE children's books. I go weak in the knees every time I spot beautiful picture books.

Got one for M's preschool book exchange and one for a cousin.

Maressa picked the little moving kitty for her cousin and we got this awesome table set for another.

Thinking I'll make a few dolls too.

We both were smitten with the newest Target designer collection...this time just for kids.

M picked this shirt and the socks.

Totally her and will go perfectly with her black tutu and black Converse sneakers she has.

Then we traveled across town (rare for me) to Michael's.

This is all we got.

M convinced me to get these small dollar wreath frames for them to decorate for Christmas.

And we got Holiday Smencils for preschool party favors.

I was disappointed with the Christmas crafts selection.

I was looking for plain flat pieces to make some of these ornaments for my crafty girls party.

Rex is having a grumpy day.

Thinking he must be getting ready to have a big shed again.

Last time he looked like he was wearing a tutu. lol

We're a little addicted to LaLaLoopsy.

I won't say how many more are under my bed for stockings.

And I got one of the boy dolls today.

I love how I can throw these little dolls in my tote and have instant entertainment for restaurants or other places requiring little people patience.

Been getting a little Christmas craft on.

More soon.

Love no homework afternoons.

Just a little piano practice and we're free to play the rest of the day!

Super easy crockpot barbeque sandwiches--YUM!

One of our go-to kid friendly and easy dinners.

Here in the south everyone loves a pulled pork sandwich.

And cooked in the crock pot makes it practically like mom's night off.

Even the four finicky eaters in the house approve.

The 10 year old boy eats 2 whole sandwiches in a sitting.

Makes nice for leftover night too.

And make sandwiches and wrap in aluminum foil to take on the go (like to baseball games).

The 6 year old boy prefers to eat it without the bun and dipped in extra bbq sauce.

So here is how I prefer to make barbeque.

I buy the boneless pork rib ends.

The type of meat makes a BIG difference.

I place the uncooked meat in the crockpot and then fill the crockpot halfway with water.

Cook on low setting about 8 hours.

Then drain the water out.

Then I pour over the meat my favorite bbq sauce (if you prefer you can make homemade).

We LOVE the red sauce from a local bbq restaurant, Gibson's Barbeque.

Now use a couple of forks to shred the tender meat and coat with sauce.

Leave on low setting for a few more hours til dinner time.

And that's all there is!
