The all new Chevrolet Volt from the house of General Motors is a promising new generation hybrid car. Chevrolet has no immediate plans to bring the model to India this year but the model is definitely planned to compete in the hybrid car segment looking at the encouraging response received for Toyota Prius in the Indian car market.

Volkswagen has decided to launch its smallest car Volkswagen Up in India. The company expects to compete with Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki by its small car range. It is expected that Volkswagen Up will launch the car in 2 door hatchback, three body style and 4 door hatchback version. The company will be presenting a small hatchback, which will offer comfortable riding experience. In order to keep the cost low, the company will fit front wheel drive and front engine layout.

It is expected that the company will launch Volkswagen Up in both petrol and diesel versions. The petrol engine of the car will be loaded with 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol motor but the diesel variant will have 0.8 litre, 2 cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. Diesel engine of the car will generate power of 75 hp and churn torque of 183 Nm but the petrol engine will produce power of 51 hp and churn torque of 100 Nm. The overall length and width of the car are 3450 mm and 1630 mm respectively. In all the three variants of this car, seating arrangement is spacious and comfortable. It is possible for four adults to travel easily in the two door hatchback. In the 4 door wagon car, 7 people can comfortably sit.

Volkswagen Up has two monitor screens, of which the first displays fuel level, vehicle speed and range. The second 7 inch monitor controls, radio volume, music selection, navigation, movies and photos. The external look of the car is extremely attractive. For robust look, it’s been provided with 18 inch alloy wheels.

TATA PLANING TO LAUNCH NANO DIESEL EARLY 2012

Almost two years after launching the petrol version of its small creation Tata Nano in the Indian market, Indian auto giant Tata Motors is now planning to launch the diesel version of this car in the country.The engine capacity of the Nano Diesel is speculated to be in the range of 600 to 700 cc and the Nano Diesel will boast the world’s smallest Bosch Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) system.
The Tata Nano diesel will be the smallest diesel run car in the Indian market as so far there are only petrol run cars available in the starting range segments A (Maruti 800) and A+ (Maruti Alto). Tata Nano diesel will be the only such car in the country and will thus create a segment of its own in the Indian auto market.

The W201 looks huge to begin with. The front end get the now familiar ‘Jeepish’ grille with the walrus tooth in the middle housing the Mahindra logo. The headlamps on the other hand are large clear lens units and to comply with European norms, this new Mahindra will sport LED daytime running lamps. The rakish hood merges smoothly into windscreen which in itself is a large unit.

Looking at the rather slim A-pillar, the new Mahindra is sure to offer good visibility. In profile the very high ground clearance is clearly visible. The ORVMs sport indicators and the pull type door handles too are unique to this SUV. At the back, the door is hinged at one end. The spare wheel will be housed under the body. The W201 will feature a two-tone interior with a twin pod instrument panel. The centre console will get controls for automatic climate control as well as a display for sat-nav and the video out from the reversing camera.

Steering mounted controls will also be a part of the package and so will premium features like rain sensing wipers and AC vents for all three rows. Under the bonnet could be a retuned version of the 2.2-litre common rail unit mated to a 6-speed manual. Automatics will also be offered for international markets. A shift-on-the-fl y 4WD version is also expected.

Volkswagen is getting ready for the festival season which is expected to attract huge volumes. Its been a month of new launches, this August. With the festive season kicking off with the arrival of Ganesha, car makers are working on offering the most attractive product to the buyers. Volkswagen will launch limited edition models of the Polo hatchback and the Vento to woo customers to VW showrooms over the next month. The new models get add-on features worth Rs 40,000 on the Trendline variants of both cars.
Buyers of the VW Vento Breeze in trendline diesel & petrol will get a touch screen multimedia player with GPS, USB & Bluetooth. While, Polo Breeze petrol gets ‘Navon’ satellite navigation system, Park distance control, Leatherette seat covers, Branded floor mats, Breeze branding, Branded luxury pillows. Customers will not have to pay more over the sticker price of the Polo or the Vento but since, its a limited period offer, buyers will have to quickly get their names listed before stocks run out.

The VW Vento is priced at Rs. 6.95 lakh while the Polo comes with a price tag of Rs. 4.50 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. In the last couple of months, sales of petrol cars has dropped substantially as more and more people are queueing up for diesel cars. The rise in petrol prices has been one the reason for this shift in demand. The hike interest rates is one of the other factors which is also contributing towards the slow paced growth.

Automakers will have high hopes this festive season and expect more car makers to come up with attractive offers on petrol cars. That said, this move by Volkswagen is certainly laudable as the VW is offering better features on their cars for the same price. The new limited edition models have made both the Polo and Vento real good value given the kit both cars pack-in. The cars will be available at VW showrooms from 10th September onwards.

BMW CONFIRMS TO LAUNCH MINI ON NEXT YEAR

It’s official, MINI is finally coming to India. The British premium small car manufacturer made the announcement at the Frankfurt motor show.Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing said, “We will come to India with the hatchback, convertible and Countryman range of vehicles at a very competitive price tag.”
Like the global markets, India will get the second generation of the MINI, which may not look much different from the earlier car, but features better power plants as well as improved safety and comfort standards.

The MINI hatch is the 21st-century version of the original Mini and will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Beetle. The Convertible is the open-top variant of the hatch and features a power-retractable soft top. The Countryman is a crossover SUV and the first five-door Mini ever. Indian buyers will get to choose between 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines.

The company is carrying out feasibility reports for assembling its cars at BMW India’s Chennai plant. MINI will set up its own dealership network in India, with cars expected to hit our shores by 2012.

NANO ON FIRE

The revolutionary Tata Nano’s fire problems simply don’t seem to end. Despite Tata Motors’ best efforts to ensure that the Nano’s rear seats have been suitably insulated from the heat of the engine, that sits just behind the Nano’s rear seats, we have two cases of Tata Nano’s bursting up in flames in a single month.

The first case is from Anand, Gujarat where the fire apparently started with the occupants of the Nano, five in number, observing smoke emanating from the rear of the car. The occupants left the car immediately and parked the car along the road side, even as the smoke became a full fledged fire to engulf the car completely.

Now, another Tata Nano has reportedly caught fire in Sri Lanka, leading to the car being completely gutted by the ensuing inferno. The Tata Nano involved in this fiery mishap was a cab that was being used by a Taxi company in Sri Lanka called the Budget Taxi.

Also to be noted is the fact that Tata Motors had completed its internal investigation on the Tata Nano’s fire incidents and had declared the Nano to be free from any engineering defects that could potentially have caused the fires. This investigation concluded before the Tata Nano’s exports to Sri Lanka began and hence, Tata Motors will have some explaining to do. Though the reasons for the latest Nano going up in flames in Sri Lanka remains to be investigated, the repeat of these events at alarming regularity reflects very poorly on the Nano’s safety.

MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LAUNCHED ALL NEW BOLERO SUV

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the all new Bolero SUV. The new Bolero is priced at INR 6.19 lakh for the base SLE variant while the ZLX BS4 variant will be priced at INR 6.96 lakh, all prices are ex-showroom Delhi. The new Bolero gets an really attractive aesthetic package over the past model of the Bolero. The Mahindra Bolero has been around for the past 8 years and most of us might have thought that the Bolero has had its days. But, this is not what the folks at Mahindra think and have come up with yet another avatar of the best selling SUV of the country.
The changes made to the Bolero are pretty impressive given the fact that the product is actually an entry level SUV. Also, the Bolero has been the selling in huge numbers in a market segment that is void of much competition. Mahindra expects to sell more than one lakh units of the Bolero this year. Last year the company sold close to 84,000 units which was again the best performance in the segment. Now, the new Bolero’s visual package consists of new front bumpers, new headlights with integrated turn-indicators and a new grille upfront which keeps its signature design along with minor changes. As we move along to the side, Mahindra has added new decals which again add to the visual appeal of the product. Towards the rear, a new spare wheel cover has been offered along with rear wipers and washer.

Inside, the new Bolero has a much better interior with new dual-tone seats with folding centre arm rest which is again a premium feature that has been added. The Bolero can seat seven including the rear bench seats. The light shades on the interior give the car an airy feel adding to the experience. The dashboard is also finished in dual-tone with fake-wood inserts and new A/C vents. The steering wheel is all new but the major change to the interior is the addition of an all-digital instrument cluster which is again a segment first. The new Bolero get added features like engine immobilizer, and Mahindra’s micro hybrid on the top-end ZLX variant.

The engine that powers the new Bolero is a frugal and dependable 2.5 litre m2DiCR diesel engine with 63 horsepower and 195 Nm of torque. The car can deliver a very descent mileage of 16 kmpl coupled with the micro hybrid. Mahindra engineers have also worked on lowering the NVH levels to allow for a more comfortable ride for the occupants. Also, the new changes will not be available on other versions of the Bolero which include a double-cab pick-up and the likes. Pricing too has been descent with just a hike of Rs 6000 over the past model. The new Bolero will be available at 200 Mahindra showrooms across the country from today. Mahindra does not offer the Bolero with four-wheel drive but has got plans to introduce a 4×4 variant in the future.

2012 MARUTHI SUZUKI RIII MPV CONCEPT

Maruti Suzuki has been working on the RIII MPV Concept for quite some time now and an unveiling at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo is expected. Ever since the RIII Concept was announced we have all been wondering what Maruti will be naming it’s new MPV and now finally thanks to a tweet emerging from AutoCarIndia Editor Hormazd Sorabjee, we now know for sure that the RIII MPV Concept will be called the Maruti Ertiga MPV.

The Maruti Ertiga MPV will be based on the Ritz platform will be Maruti’s offering for the Indian MPV market, to take on the likes of the Mahindra Xylo, the Sumo Grande and the Toyota Innova. This is a people-mover, and that means additional space, so Maruti has stretched the wheelbase to 2740mm, up by 380mm on the Ritz, and the roof is higher compared to the Ritz.

This 2012 Maruti Ertiga MPV will arrive with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine will be a 1.4 Liter K-series unit producing about 87Bhp-130 Nm unit while the diesel engine could be a 90 Bhp-200Nm unit of the tried and tested 1.3 Liter Multijet diesel engine. There are also rumors of an all-new K14 petrol engine which makes its debut in the Ertiga. The Maruti RIII MPV measures in at 4.26 Meters and will be capable of sitting 6-7 adults in relative comfort.

We expect the Maruti Ertiga to be priced between Rs.7 lakhs and Rs.9 lakhs making it one of the cheapest MPVs in the Indian market. Coupled with Maruti Suzuki’s image of cheap running and maintenance costs, the Maruti Ertiga could soon top the Indian MPV segment.

Going by its meaningful name, the Hyundai Eon could very well be in for a long haul in the Indian car market which has been very kind to hatchbacks and small cars. The Hyundai Eon could very well be the small car that replaces Hyundai’s iconic Santro. Hyundai claims that the new small car would excel both performance wise and also have good fuel economy.

Powering the Hyundai Eon will be a three cylinder 800 cc petrol engine with about 50bhp of power. The small hatchback’s fascia has styling cues from the new Verna and the car does look a generation or two ahead of the Santro and much more attractive than the Maruti Alto. FIAT GRANDE PUNTO FACELIFT

Fiat’s baby, the Grande Punto has got a new facelift along with a new petrol engine making it under the hood. The new Grande Punto Facelift has been slated for an unveiling at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The Grande Punto was first introduced in 2005 and later on in 2009 got a facelift in the form of the Punto Evo. And now the current facelift although a minor one, still manages to make a good looking car an even better one.

Starting with the visual upgrades, the headlights have become slightly bigger, the chrome on the bonnet disappears and a new bumper now incorporates a new honeycomb grille. At the side, the alloy wheels have been changed and now sport 14-spokes (earlier model had 12-spokes). The rear has very little changes with slight changes in bumper and tail lights.

Skoda will unveil a new concept at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. This concept, dubbed as the Mission L, will preview a crucial new model- sixth in the automaker’s lineup. The Czech carmaker asserts that it’s a C-segment car, but hasn’t officially said anything about its similarities with the VW Vento. However, a look at the proportions, a glance at the shape, a thought given to the positioning and it doesn’t take a genius to see that this sedan may well be the preview of the Lauretta, which is based on the Vento and is arriving in India this festive season.

The concept is a C-segment car and actually is a five-door hatchback in a “compact liftback design”. The production version is expected to bridge the huge gap between the Fabia and Octavia in Skoda’s current lineup. The automaker revealed that this car will primarily compete in the Russian, Chinese, European and the Indian markets. But each market will receive a specialized version best catering to the needs of the region. While the Russian, Chinese and European market is expected to receive the five-door hatch version of this model, the Indian auto market will receive a four-door version and is rumored to be sold as the ‘Lauretta’.

“Revealing the look of our new compact model, the MissionL shows exactly the direction our brand is going to take,” says Skoda Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Honda will be launching its new hatchback, the Honda Brio in India on the 27th of September 2011. The launch of the Brio in India is just ahead of the festive season starting in early October during which car sales will be at its peak in India. The new car from Honda’s stable will compete with Maruti’s Swift, Volkswagen’s Polo, Ford’s Figo, Hyundai’s i10 and Toyota’s Liva.

The Honda Brio was first showcased at the the 2010 Indian Auto Expo and then later on got a launch in the Thai market earlier this year. India will be the second market in which the Honda Brio Hatchback will be launched, but the car faces bigger challenges when it’s launched globally.

Under the hood of the Honda Brio will be the 1.2 Liter i-VTEC engine producing 88ps @ 6000 rpm and generating 109Nm of torque @ 4600 rpm. Given that the car is light and small, the engine is quite a powerful one and will deliver fuel efficiency around 18 kmpl. The car also comes with beige interiors, which usually are a major draw amongst Indian car buyers despite beige interiors being tough to maintain.

The Honda Brio is likely to be placed in the Rs. 4.2 lakh and Rs. 4.5 lakh price range promising a decent city car with capable highway credentials providing Honda’s good quality and reliability at an affordable price.

Toyota Motors have now finally confirmed the launch date for Toyota Etios Sedan Diesel and Liva Hatchback Diesel in India for the 9th of September, 2011. Talking to The Economic Times, Mr Sandeep Singh, Deputy Marketing Director of Marketing at Toyota confirmed the launch date for the diesel version of the Etios and the Liva on the 9th of September, 2011.

Both the cars will use a detuned version of the 1.4 Liter D-4D common rail turbo diesel engine which will use a fixed geometry turbocharger instead of a variable geometry turbocharger. Peak power is expected to be around 70-75 Bhp while peak torque is expected to be about 170 Nm. Incidentally, the same engine is used in the Toyota Corolla Altis with the major difference being that it uses a variable geometry turbocharger to deliver a higher power and torque rating of 87 Bhp and 205 Nm respectively. It would be interesting to see whether Toyota uses a six speed manual transmission or opts to go with a 5 speed unit.

The diesel variants of Toyota Etios Sedan and the Liva Hatchback are expected to bring a sharp increase in volumes for Toyota. Also, the low kerb weights of the Toyota Etios Sedan and the Toyota Liva Hatchback points to great driveability and high mileage numbers with the 1.4 Liter D-4D diesel engine. The launch is also expected to revive flagging sales of the Etios Liva Hatchback, which after a strong initial sales performance has become a slow seller due to the lack of a diesel engined model.

Therefore, this launch will address just that. We hope that Toyota manages to price the diesel variants of the Etios Sedan and the Liva Hatchback at a premium of around INR 70,000 over the petrol variants rather than the usual 1 Lakh rupee premium that the automaker usually charges for its diesel engined cars. This will be very crucial as both the Etios Sedan and the Liva Diesel’s main selling points have been affordability coupled to the tremendous brand value of the Toyota brand.

After providing a peek at the North American version of the 2012 Toyota Camry, we now have the first official pictures of what the India bound variant will look like. And compared to the North American version, the 2012 international Toyota Camry looks pretty nice with bits of chrome here and there.

The entire front fascia of the 2012 Toyota Camry has been changed with less aggressive headlights, smaller grille and sober fog lamps. The tailgate has longer taillights as compared to the US-spec model with an overall design that is classier (and too-Honda Accord-ish).

The 2012 Toyota Camry Sedan comes with a more responsive and fuel efficient 2.5 Liter dual VVT-i four cylinder petrol engine that produces 180 Bhp and 231 Nm. Another major change is the 6 speed automatic gearbox, which adds a cog more when compared to the 5 speed autobox of the existing version. Internationally, the 2012 Toyota Camry has dumped the manual transmission and it would be interesting to see whether Toyota India also will follow suit.

As for launch plans don’t expect Toyota to bring in the new 2012 Toyota Camry anytime before the unveiling at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo in Delhi.

The Tata Indigo eCS Compact Sedan, which has been the pioneer of compact sedans in India, has gotten yet another upgrade from Tata Motors Limited. Suzuki has revealed a performance variant of its Swift, called the Swift Sport. The Japanese carmaker will unveil the car at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The 2 door sports car hatchback has an updated 1.6 Litre high performance engine M16A which produces a max power of 134.1 BHP @ 6900 RPM and maximum torque of 160 Nm @ 4400 RPM. The exterior dimensions remain same as the new generation Swift at 3890mm length, 1695mm width and 1510mm height. The wheelbase also remains same at 2430 mm with the front and rear track width being 1470mm and 1475mm respectively.

In a brief statement Suzuki revealed the Sport “offers superior cornering stability and brisker, more responsive handling, thanks to struts with internal rebound springs and an exclusive rear-suspension design.”

On the Inside, Suzuki Swift Sport 2012 has got sport seats, seven airbags for improved safety, impact absorbing zones in the chassis of the car, high quality interiors with sporty finish. The Swift sport will be launched in Europe and has rare possibility to make it to India as the premium sports segment is not on Maruti’s priority list as of now.

In 2010, we saw a flurry of hatchbacks rush into the Indian market and this year, it’s all about sedans. From Toyota Etios to Nissan Sunny that was previewed recently, five sedans in the C Segment are competing neck-to-neck.
When Toyota Etios is completely made for India and priced aggressively starting from Rs 4.96 lakh, you can’t expect the real character of a Toyota car from it. Hyundai Verna, on the other hand, has been there for a while now as one of the most admired cars in the segment. Now, it’s gone under the knife and come out with a dynamic and futuristic design. With prices starting from Rs 6.99 lakh, Verna is a champion in terms of killer looks and the Hyundai reliability.

Ford, too, is on a complete makeover mode to come out with a desi image in India. The immense success of the Figo hatchback last year was a boon for the company, yet the poor resale value and high maintenance of the sedans forced Ford to phase out the Ikon and introduce the global Fiesta in India. GM overtakes Toyota as the world's largest auto maker after first six month sales

The American automobile major General Motors Co has reportedly outsold The Japanese automobile giant Toyota Motor Corp globally in the first six months to become the world’s largest auto maker after the record March earthquake disrupted production in Japan.

According to reports, GM sales rose 8.9 per cent to 4.5 million units in the half-year ended June 30. It was mentioned that it compares with 4.1 million units at second ranked Volkswagen AG and 3.7 million units for Toyota, including its luxury Lexus marquee and affiliates Daihatsu Motor Co and Hino Motors Ltd. Output at the Toyota City, Japan-based auto maker slumped 23 per cent to 3.4 million units in the half-year after the company halted production following the earthquake and tsunami in March. Toyota expects to enter a production recovery phase in September, one month earlier than previously announced, it said on August 2.
The reports mentioned that GM’s US sales climbed to 669,065 vehicles in the second quarter, according to industry data and the Chevrolet Cruze was the top-selling car in the market in June and the Chevy Silverado full-size pickup remained the second- most popular vehicle, behind only Ford Motor Co.’s F-Series line, it was mentioned.
