The value you provide is directly related to how easily your customer can move forward with you. So, how easy is it for your customer? Every so often, it's a good idea to sit on the other end of the phone, the other side of table or in the seats of those you are trying to reach.

Maybe when you see what they see and hear what they hear, you'll be better positioned to answer that question.

where did that come from?

It’s not enough to just monitor our behavior. We have to learn to monitor something else. However, that something else we need to monitor is something that for the most part no one has ever taught us how to do. In this message you will discover what it is and why it is so important.

That statement doesn’t make much sense unless you really consider why we have a Christmas.

You see, I’m the reason for the season. If it weren’t for people like me, you wouldn’t be getting all the presents you’ll receive this week. If it weren’t for people like me you wouldn’t be preparing to celebrate with friends and family this week. If it weren’t for people like me, God would have never had to send his Son into this world. But it’s because of people like me and it’s because of people like you; it’s because of your friends and relatives that we even have a Christmas.

When God saw my sin, and your sin, and the sin of this world…

His response wasn’t judgment, thunder and destruction…

His response…He gave His son.

If it weren’t for my sin and the mess I was in, He wouldn’t have come at all.

You see, the sin of this world and the mess we find ourselves in isn’t a disruption to Christmas. It is the very reason for Christmas.

Let me sum it up this way…

For God so loved the world.

And here’s Christmas part…

That He gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believes in Him,

That means anyone who would put their faith, and trust and confidence in Him.

Would not perish, but have ever lasting life.

You see, I have something in common with every single person I will gather with this week to celebrate Christmas. That we collectively are the reason for the season. We are the reason that God sent His Son into the world.

What does the future of the church look like?

Two Histories of the Church from Granger Community on Vimeo.

Pride and conceit appear when people get comfortable. And, the church is full of two types people; those who are set in their ways and those who aren’t. I am encouraged and motivated to change the world by embracing change. (From Granger Community)

Creating Margin 5/2 from Jersey Baptist Church on Vimeo.

I gathered some of my material from Ed Young Jr. and Andy Stanley. They had some incredible insights to share as it related to God and how closely tied we are to our finances.
It was a great morning and my hope and prayer is that God will use this message to touch hearts and change lives as we learn to live life with limits. Thank you Pastor John for the opportunity.

Jesus says in Matthew 6:21...
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. -Isaiah 53:5-7

I wanted to take just a moment to say thank you to all of you emerge regulars out there...

In 2004 I was part of a team that helped bring the idea of worship venues to reality at Jersey. We launched our first remote venue in 2004. It was a tremendous success. In 2005 I was part of a team that helped create and implement our Emerge venue. I can still remember the excitement and anticipation that surrounded the launch of that venue. In the spring of 2006 I was asked to take the lead role in the Emerge venue along side Chris when our good friend Horace was called into new roles within our ministry. And so the journey began…

The last four years leave me without words. I simply don't have the vocabulary to express my heart of gratitude for the opportunity to lead and my appreciation for the incredible people that attend and have attended Emerge. Thank you for the last four years. Leading and serving you in Emerge has been unquestionably one of the best things I have ever done. You all are truly incredible.

I just want to say a final thank you to an incredible group of volunteers. From our Welcome Team and Environments Team to our A/V Team...You all have been fantastic to work with over the last four years. A huge thanks to our band. You guys are phenomenal. To all of our teams...you also need to know just how much Jersey appreciates you. You don't hear it nearly as much as you should, but you are loved and valued more than you know. How cool is it to know that you have all played a part in allowing God to touch hearts and change lives.

Finally, I want to thank three amazing and gifted worship leaders that I have been honored to serve alongside. You guys are such a huge part of my life. Serving with you in ministry will forever mark my life. I hope I was able to invest in your life the way you invested in mine. We watched God do some pretty awesome things together. You guys are a true blessing.

Watching God move at Jersey and in Emerge has been beyond amazing. We have worshipped our great God together and we have watched life change happen together. I have no doubt that it will continue as Justin and Erik lead you moving forward. Man, these guys are fantastic! I am so excited to watch as God continues to move through their leadership.

Let me just say one more thing as I close this note...

Our worship should happen every day, not just Sunday's. Our worship should be a full life response to who God is and What He has done in your life. However, when you walk into Emerge on a Sunday morning to worship, remember the special gift that you have been given. You have been given the gift of worshipping together with your friends, your family and those who love Jesus. Not everyone on this earth can say that. That is special.

Guys, we should want our worship to a blessing to God. He has given us so much. As you worship Him through what you say, sing, hear or give this Sunday...worship Him in such a way that it would be a blessing. Can you imagine God watching our worship to Him and being pleased? Can you imagine putting a smile on the face of God?

Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. -Hebrews 13:15

Thank you so much! I love you all.

Brian

really?

(I love you babe!)
Posted by Jud Wilhite (Deadly Viper Blog):

We live in a culture obsessed with success.

A CEO of a Fortune 500 company pulled into a service station to get gas. He went inside to pay and when he came out he noticed his wife engaged in a deep discussion with the service attendant. It turned out that she knew him. It fact back in high school before she met her eventual husband, she used to date him. The CEO got in the car and drove off and said, “I bet I know what you were thinking back there. I bet you were thinking you’re glad you married a Fortune 500 CEO and not a service attendant.” “No,” she said, “I was thinking if I’d married him, He’d be a fortune 500 CEO and you’d be a service attendant.” There are lots of opinions on how to be successful.

It relieves tension. It recalibrates us.

That is what happens when I think about the sovereignty of God. Reminding myself that God is sovereign is like a deep spiritual breath. God is in control. God is ordering my footsteps. God is setting me up for good deeds. God has a plan and purpose for my life. That not only gives me a sense of destiny about my life. It takes all the pressure off of me. It helps me relax spiritually.

I think that is one dimension of the "rest" described in Hebrews 4.

when food goes bad...

If you know me at all you know that I have a weird relationship with food. I don't enjoy large buffets or potlucks. Especially an outdoor buffet in the middle of summer. Dirty fingers, hovering, flies (wow, can't believe I don't enjoy that). Never been a big fan of veggies, meat has to be cooked a certain way and if you have to smell something straight out of the fridge before you serve it, count me out.

After dinner tonight I needed something else to eat. I rummaged through the fridge and found some yogurt cups. Peach (yum!). I opened it, took a big spoonful, and swallowed. Now I can probably count on two fingers the number of times I have let something spoiled cross my lips, let alone find my stomach. Well, tonight one got passed me. We had an old yogurt cup buried among the new cups. I can still taste it and I'm not sure I feel well (OK, so I am a little dramatic, but seriously, I feel weird). Oh well, I guess I am glad (kind of) I found the bad cup and not one of the kids.

I might never eat peach yogurt again. That may seem extreme, but that is the life I live with food. I will do my best to overcome (I really like peach yogurt).

a memorial day tribute

Today is Memorial Day and most of us probably have the day off.
I hope we will take a moment to remember why...

In the past two-hundred thirty-four years…
Over one million brave men and women have given their lives to protect what we hold most precious…

From the battle of Lexington and Concord,
To the bloodshed at Antietam,

From the trenches of World War One,
To the bombing at Pearl Harbor,

From Korea and Vietnam,
To the deserts of Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq;

Today we remember…

We honor…

And we thank the men and women who have fought to establish and preserve of freedom.

This video is for you. We all dressed up (you know, ties and dresses). Terri made a nice dinner that included cloth napkins and candles. The strawberry cake was amazing! I wore a suit. However, I was given a hard way to go for not wearing socks (or shoes). Hannah had a great time as did Joel. Although it was a little harder to convince him to dress up. The unbuttoned shirt and clip on tie says it all. We couldn't help but laugh.

a family field trip...

I guess I should have posted our field trip to The Wilds earlier this spring.
Well, here ya go...

The Wilds is one of the largest and most innovative wildlife conservation centers in the world.

It was a little chilly, but the day was a lot of fun. We hiked, we learned, we painted a frog house (pardon me, we painted a toad abode).

We also boarded a guided Safari Transport to view rare and endangered animals living in natural, open-range habitats. Jack in the man!

Anyway...
It has been more than a month since my last post. Lots going on, but even so, I have had more than enough time to post. Not sure why I haven't.

Many of you have emailed and/or asked about family nights...
No worries, we'll be back. It has been a little crazy over the last several weeks. We are hoping to resume Family Night this week.

Other than that I also hope to resume regular posts.

family night - rock band night

This past week we grabbed some guitars, a set of drum sticks, and a microphone and rocked it out. We only have three or four ideas left in the box. I either need to borrow some of your ideas or brainstorm some new ones.

family night - rootbeer float night

This past Tuesday evening was Root Beer Float Night. The theme...Tour de Fast Food Night. I really enjoyed this one. We picked the three places we wanted to hit. From there we each determined one item that we wanted from each place. We hit the drive thru's and took pictures along the way. We brought everything home on picked a good movie for the night.

After four or five weeks I can honestly say that we have really enjoyed our Tuesday nights. We have actually had to say no to other things that have popped up in order to protect our Tuesday evenings. We understand that we may need to change the night every once in a while, but overall we really want to keep that night a priority.

Next week is Root Beer Float Night! As you can see from the picture, last night was crazy hat night. The idea was to find and/or fashion a crazy hat and then wear it for the evening. Hannah's hat was made from scratch while Terri and Joel pulled from various other resources to pull off their crazy hat. OK, so my hat lacked what some might call...creativity. However, it was good enough to qualify for last nights festivities. Our Bible verse last night came out of Exodus 20:12.

Hopefully you have begun your family night journey. We have enjoyed ours.
Let me know if you have started and what you are doing.

OK, next weeks theme is one that I have been waiting for...
Tour de Fast Food Night (I'll explain next week).

family night - backwards night

Last night we spent the evening doing things backwards. (Sorry, no picture this week). This was much harder than I had anticipated. Upon walking in the door from the office I went upstairs and changed clothes. Mind you, I put the clothes on backwards. Terri and the kids also put everything on backwards. From there we spent the evening walking around backwards. This took some real brain power. The best part of the evening...We started with desert first at dinner (OK, then I had desert again at the end, but that's beside the point). Our verse for the week was Proverbs 15:20.

After three weeks of calling Tuesdays family night I wish we would have started this earlier. I would highly recommend starting a family night of your own. Pick a night and make it your own. I am posting our experiences so you can use some of our goofy ideas. If you happen to start doing your own version of family night and have new ideas please pass them along. I will eventually run out of ideas.

Next weeks theme...Crazy Hat Night
(I'll try and remember to take a picture)

family night - menu experiment night

Last night we continued our family night series. It was another successful and fun evening. Last nights theme...The Menu Experiment. Creativity was unleashed in the kitchen. We all put on aprons and prepared dinner. We knew we would eat a little later than usual so Terri bought a new DVD to watch while we prepared and waited. The menu consisted of a Crunchy Romain Tossed Salad (I made that and it was excellent). A loaf of Wholesome Oatmeal Bread went nicely with our main course...Herbed Chicken on Rice (different, but not too bad). We capped it off with a Chocolate Pudding Pizza (can't wait to eat the leftovers on that one)! We discussed our verse for the week (John 15:5) while enjoying desert. And yes, we also took a picture.

OK, to close out the evening we drew next weeks theme...
Backwards Night. Stay tuned...
I'll explain everything when I post next week.

family night - mix match night

Last night we began the first in what we hope to be a long series of family nights. Tuesday night is our night. We came up with a list of themes and put them in a box. Some of the themes came from the outside sources while others we developed. Each Tuesday during family night we choose a theme for the following week. It gives us something to look forward to and it allows us to prepare if necessary. Last night was Mix Match Night. Everyone put on the most obnoxious wardrobe they could find and wore it for the evening. Most of us are creatures of habit and so we also switched places at dinner from our normal seating arrangement. To top it off we threw in a couple of competitive rounds of UNO Spin.

Each week we will select a verse to read and discuss at dinner. The verse is on the theme card each week. Last nights verse was Proverbs 6:20. It was a really fun evening.

Last night we drew the theme for next week...
Experiment in the Kitchen Night. We pulled out the cookbooks and selected the menu for next weeks dinner (stuff we've never eaten before). Should be interesting.

I'll keep you posted.
