Moving forward

Right… it's official… I'm moving!

You are all invited to come on over to my blog WABI SABI, where I'll be posting from now and on.

Why - you ask? Well, as my life is changing, I'm changing with it. From now and on, I'm focusing more art & photography and less on interior design consultancy, helping my clients finding the perfect item or personal style. Instead I'll be a more "selfish" blogger over at WABI SABI, and simply blog about clever, eco friendly ideas and simple yet sophisticated spaces that inspire ME. Mixed with arts, crafts and photography, of course.

Halloween or Alla helgons dag?

Kids may be celebrating Halloween all over the world this week. We are celebrating Alla helgons dag this weekend - a time to remember friends and family members, gone before us, by placing lit candles on their graves.

November 1 is the proper All Saints’ Day (Alla helgons dag), though we celebrate it the first Saturday of November. It's actually a Medieval Catholic invention to remember those Saints who doesn't have a day of their own in the calendar. Later, the following day, November 2, became All Souls’ Day, a day for everyone to remember those who had passed away. In late 18C the two days were combines into All Saints’ Day, and quite recently it was moved to the first Saturday in November here in Sweden. More than you ever wanted to know, right?

Gillar du grafisk design, måste du lyssna på programmet TYPO i P1. Sänds måndagar, men finns att lyssna på sveriges radios webplats. Hittills har man klarat av fonterna Comic Sans (som jag också verkligen hatar) och Old English (svåranvänt). Så här presenteras programmen av SR:

Comic Sans

Du har sett det på dagislappar, i tvättstugan och på inbjudningar till barnkalas. Den snälla informella tonen har gjort det till folkets favorit. Men det är hatat av branschen.

– Jag måste erkänn att jag har sagt till mina barns dagisfröken om typsnittet, säger Carolina Laudon, typsnittstecknare. På en dagislapp må det vara förlåtet, men när Comic Sans används på fakturor för begravningsbyråer eller varningsskyltar för högspänningsledningar sänder den barnsliga tonen ut helt fel budskap. Hör berättelsen om Comic Sans, om när det ska användas och hur det inte ska användas. Kan det verkligen vara fel på ett typsnitt?I programmet hör vi typsnittstecknarna Stefan Hattenbach och Carolina Laudon, vi hör även den grafiska designern Stefania Malmsten. Lyssna här.

Old English

Old English är typsnittet med anor tillbaka till medeltidens munkar. Men vad händer om det hamnar på ett dokument från Sverigedemokraterna? ”Det här associerar man ju direkt till nazism”, säger Cap O Designs chefredaktör Carina Nilsson, när hon får se ett dokument från partiet. New wallpaper - tapetnyheter från Borås

I am looking for a wallpaper for a wall in my kitchen.

Just a little bit of wall, in between fridge, wooden stove and some shelves.

I saw these at the store yesterday.

Scandinavian design from the 1950s and 1960s from Borås Tapeter.

Am seriously thinking of the bottom one.

To "much"?

Vissa former och mönster har sådan kvalitet att de aldrig blir omoderna, aldrig känns fel. Nu har Boråstapeter i samarbete med Ljungbergs Textil lanserat tapetkollektionen Wallpapers by Scandinavian Designers med designgiganterna Arne Jacobsen, Sven Markelius, Karl Axel Pehrson och Stig Lindbergs mest kända mönster. Någon favorit?

Clever styling vs. overexposed clutter

When I saw these recent images from Agent Bauer by Petra Bindel,

they made me think of how most commercial styling is locked in a time capsule.

And why not? If you are selling a product, you want it to be seen in an

environment that is now. Very now. Only now.

I like the "living room" arrangement above a lot,

since I'm a sucker for classic still life arrangements, and it checks most boxes.

And the arrangement below is OK. Especially the placing of the pink details.

But it's too cluttered, and I'm not sure the image is selling

the bottles (in the center of the pic.)

Or the lamps? Or perhaps the chairs?

Or all of the above??

I love origami, and that's what I look at in this picture, though I guess the lamp is on sale?

Excellent styling in the pics above and below.

In these pics there is no doubt: the chairs are for sale.

But I'm turned off by the geometric details and the raw wooden surfaces below,

simply because I've seen them everywhere by now.

Been there, done that, in other words.

What do you think?

My favorite styling is shown in the pic below.

Clever, timeless, unpretentious.

I even love the (otherwise overexposed) washi tape!

Just one strip, and placed at a perfect angle to the paper and the lamp to do its trick.

Swedish designer Jonna Fransson has made two beautiful botanical drawings, now for sale at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. In the details shown here, you can see the delicate drawings - and the soft, muted pastels, often seen in contemporary design.
