Which will be the best for you? All hair removal candidates would like permanent hair removal and permanent laser hair removal is the only unique solution.

Laser hair removal is gaining popularity among those looking for permanent hair removal. Nevertheless, permanent laser hair removal does not suit everyone. Before going for a laser hair removal you are recommended to go through these points.

1. Laser hair removal is best for dark hair with light skin but it does not mean that you are not the right candidate for the laser hair removal. You should visit a dermatologist before going for a laser hair removal and you should collect information on laser hair removal from the manufacturers or direct from their site. However, some dermatologists can suggest you some alternatives. If you have light color hair then artificial hair darkening is advisable followed by laser.

2. It is very important to have a consultation with a dermatologist. You should meet the technician and request him or her to perform a test pulse. You should find a clinic, which is dedicated to your needs. Laser hair removal treatment is very particular depending on the type of skin and hair. Find a clinic with a friendly and informative staff that makes you feel comfortable.

3. Avoid waxing and tweezing for at least 6 weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. You are advised not to remove hairs by the roots.

Laser hair removal is a painless process. If there is a little pain, it is certainly bearable. If you cannot bear the pain during laser hair removal you should tell your technician so that he or she can supply you with numbing creams or proper coolants. Your feedback about pain will help the technician to adjust the intensity of the laser.

However, Permanent Laser Hair Removal is one of the long lasting hair removal methods. However, re growth can occur after laser hair removal, which may be lighter in color.

Disadvantages of laser hair removal:
1) A long-term data regarding safety, effectiveness and response rate of laser hair removal has not yet been established.
2) Sometimes regrowth takes place even after laser hair removal, which indicates laser hair removal is not 100% permanent.
3) Laser hair removal is generally not effective on gray, red, blonde or unpigmented hair.
4) Laser hair removal must be used very carefully because improper treatment can cause skin discoloration, burns, lesions or patchy regrowth.
5) Laser hair removal requires eye protection and skin cautiousness.

If you are residing around New York or in New York, you seem to be very lucky. Welcome yourself to laser hair removal New York; one of the fastest growing industries that will help you to get rid of your unwanted hair using the latest technologies.

No matter where you are and what you want, be it laser hair removal New York or laser hair removal Los Angeles, first of all you should get full information on laser hair removal and consult a dermatologist to take a major decision.

Tyson J Stevenson creates useful articles & reviews on a wide variety of everyday subjects. What Do I Need to Know?

Laser Hair Removal: Am I a Good Candidate? What Do I Need to Know?

How Laser Hair Removal works

A laser emits an invisible beam that penetrates the skin around the hair. Because of the dark pigments in the hair, the energy from the laser is absorbed into the hair. The energy from the laser converts into heat, damaging the function of the hair, and the ability for the follicle to grow hair.

Why Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a fast and effective way to remove hair. It can treat large areas rapidly. Over a period of time all the targeted hair becomes deteriorated and the hair ceases to grow.

How often do I have to get the laser hair removal procedure done?

An (indicative) number of sessions

Intervals in between each session

Face

6 sessions

2-3 months

Upper lip

6 sessions

1,5-2,5 months

Chin

5 sessions

2 months

Forearm

4 sessions

2-3 months

Back

4 sessions

2-4 months

Chest

4 sessions

2-3 months

Underarm

6 sessions

2-3 months

Bikini

4 sessions

2-2,5 months

Thighs

4 sessions

2-4 months

Legs

4 sessions

2-3 months

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal, while safe when done correctly can cause the skin to burn. The energy from the laser is targeted by color. Darker colors attract more of the laser’s energy. This becomes a problem for people who’s skin color is close to the color of their hair. The laser energy is no longer just absorbed into the hair follicle, but is absorbed into the skin as well, which can cause burning, scarring and damage.

The larger the difference or contrast between the color and your skin, the better a candidate you are for laser hair removal.

What areas can I treat with Laser Hair Removal?

Any area on the body is treatable, except for close to the eye area. The most common area are the face, upper lip, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, chest, abdomen, bikini area, and legs.

The difference between Laser hair removal and pulsed light treatment

Pulsed light treatment is not actually a form of laser. Using intense high energy light it produces the same effect as laser hair removal. These devices are harder to adjust to each patient’s skin and hair type and therefore require larger expertise to use than laser hair removal.

Adverse reactions to laser hair removal

The worst case scenario with laser hair removal is damage to the surrounding skin. This can result in pigment changes in the skin. Skin may become lighter or darker. Change in skin color is usually temporary and fades after a few months. The darker one’s skin is the more susceptible they are to adverse reactions when undergoing laser hair removal.

Provided by http://gossip.bluelaundry.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://laserhairremovalodyssey.blogspot.com/2006/04/laser-hair-removal-am-i-good-candidate.html' title='Laser Hair Removal: Am I a Good Candidate? Or, if you're still researching and want to know the different hair removal solutions available to you, keep reading.

Hair Removal Solutions: Laser Hair Removal And Others

Fear no longer the ignominy of unwanted body hair. If you have been willing to walk should somebody show you the way, you have come to the right place for hair removal solutions. Here we present some of the popular hair removal solutions like laser hair removal among others which can offer you the flight of fantasy that you have been seeking for so long to become truly beautiful.

Laser hair removal: The latest technology in the long list of hair removal solutions, laser hair removal offers a easy to use, extremely effective method to get rid of unwanted body hair and is long lasting in its effect. Men and Women alike have benefited from this superb technology which promises unwanted hair removal from virtually any part of the human body. The principle of hair removal by laser is based on the fact that thermal agitation of the hair follicle and bulb under the skin causes the bulb to destabilize, break down and forego the capability of regeneration. Thus laser hair removal is precise and effective in hair removal.

Shaving: The most common and the oldest hair removal solution in the market today and world different from laser hair removal. Shaving is a self administered hair removal solution in daily use by both men and women for getting rid of body hair. The equipment required is low-tech : a shaving razor, brush and cream is all that you need. However the application is limited to only areas on your body that you can see and reach and is not definitely applicable for the tender areas on the human body. This is not a permanent hair removal solution as well.

Tweezing: Otherwise called plucking, this method involves using a pair of tweezers to pull the hair out of the skin to ensure hair removal. This method is particularly painful and suffers from the same drawbacks of shaving in terms of permanence of effect and areas of applicability. It is hard to imagine that laser hair removal and tweezing essentially are solutions to virtually the same problem.

Electrolysis: Before the onset of laser hair removal, electrolysis was widely touted as a very effective method for hair removal. It’s different from hair removal by laser in the sense that, instead of a laser beam destabilizing the hair root, it’s an electric current that does the same job. This treatment also needs to be administered for a longer period of time as compared to laser hair removal and is definitely not for the faint hearted.

In our opinion amongst all the options of hair removal available in the market today, laser hair removal seems to be the most promising. Its just a matter of time before the technology becomes so prevalent that even for the unfortunate few for whom cost is a hurdle, it will be within reach of their financial boundaries!

About the Author: Visit our articles section at http://www.Laser-Hair-Removal-For-You.com for more such practical advice, tips and hair removal information. © 2005, Sam Natarajan. In fact, I wish I had known these things before getting my laser hair removal treatment.

Perhaps my skin is just too sensitive? Could that be why it broke out so badly? I'm just not sure...
And, it does hurt like heck!

Laser Hair Treatment: 10 Things You Must Know About Getting A Good Laser Hair Removal Service

Laser hair removal is supposed to be a safe process, yet dubious claims and inappropriate equipment still lead to scams and injuries. Consumers themselves must know the ins and outs of laser hair removal to prevent themselves from getting cheated.

The following points will aid you in making a proper decision to get yourself ready at the clinic.

1) The sensitivity of your skin.
A skin can be too delicate to be damaged instead of getting treated. A technology called CoolGlide can treat all known skin types. Consult a professional to examine and discuss over your skin and infection issues prior to treatment.

2) The degree of discomfort.
Do not believe in a "no-pain" process. All treatment are bound to make you uncomfortable. However, it's not anywhere near the whip-lash pain of waxing.

3) The possibility of regrowth.
Laser hair removal cannot possibly stop hair growth, though it can reduce growth rate permanently after hair cells are killed. If a practitioner claims to eradicate hair growth completely, you should ask for testimonials and get their proof upfront; it's in their benefit to tell you their achievement.

4) The cost.
Depending on the area size treated, it could amount from US$25 to US$250. You may compare the price ranges of several services to get a good gauge. Ask for outstanding reasons that could factor into the overall cost, particular the overheads for their equipment.

5) Aging equipment.
Ask for the type of laser used, whether it is effective, how long the practitioners have used the equipment and if there are newer models. You have a right to know.

6) Multiple treatment plans.
It's quite likely to return for several treatments within 2 weeks, and then another separate session if necessary within a year to eliminate regrowth, but asking you to come back regularly without the fullest and sincere explanation on your case is simply an indication of ineffectiveness. Beware of such tactics that forces you to pay a lump sum in full. You deserve a good laser treatment as it is.

7) Safety measures.
Laser, if abused, can cause damaging effects. Check what precautions are taken, like applying a layer of protective cream over the skin or wearing eye goggles.

8) The practitioner.
Who is actually doing the treatment? The experienced doctor or some 'assistant'? Check that the practitioner is trained, qualified and certified to carry out treatments.

9) Ask for a test treatment.
This is a simple request which practitioners have no difficulties to fulfill. Cost will still be incurred, but your initial experience with laser hair removal gets you in the know of how a typical treatment works and in tune with the clinical environment.

10) Get written information.
Get a written agreement on all obligations, commitment and breakdown of cost from the practitioner to ensure that he stays true to the standard of service provided.

About the Author: Justin Koh is a freelance writer whose articles have appear in most major ezines. It gives you the basic background and information to understand exactly what Laser Hair Removal is. If you've been hanging around this blog at all, you'll know my experience was mostly-good, but I did experience side effects as well, with limited results. Anyway, here's what this person had to say...

A Plain-English Guide To Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has become an increasingly popular method of depilation in recent years, for many good reasons. But like most other beauty treatments, it should be undertaken with caution and with a little bit of research under your belt, so here are the most important factors to bear in mind when considering whether laser hair removal is right for you.

First of all, what is laser hair removal? Unless you want to understand the physics of light, there's a very simple definition. In the hands of an experienced beauty therapist, a handheld device emits a particular wavelength of light, which destroys the hair without harming the skin that surrounds it. It's a simple technique that's easy to administer, and more importantly, unlike waxing or sugaring, it's relatively pain free.

There are, however, some disadvantages associated with this method of hair removal, and it's unfortunately not suitable for everyone. Because the laser destroys dark material, the hair to be removed must be darker than the skin surrounding it, so those with very fair hair might not be eligible for laser hair removal.

Recently tanned skin is also unsuited to this method of hair removal, so be careful to avoid the sun before you schedule your appointment. Any type of skin damage may be exacerbated by the use of lasers, so take good care of your skin before you take that trip to the beauty salon, and postpone your appointment should you develop any skin injuries, such as a rash, or a cut.

Laser hair removal is sometimes advertised as a permanent system of hair removal, and while this method of depilation often does yield long-lasting results, there is not yet enough evidence to support a blanket claim of permanent hair loss. Laser hair removal is most effective on those with paler skins and dark hair, and many people matching this description have found that regrowth is minimal, with new hairs finer and lighter than prior to treatment.

Laser hair removal is more expensive than other methods of depilation, and as the area of unwanted hair can require a number of treatments before optimal results are seen, the cost can quickly add up. But for those who regular spend a small fortune on shavers, waxing strips and other hair removal tools, the effectiveness of laser surgery can make it a real money saver in the long run.

It is important to remember that a laser can be dangerous in the wrong hands, so be careful to find a professional and reputable salon to perform your laser hair removal. Find a beauty therapist with whom you feel comfortable, and ask any and all questions you need to put your mind at ease. Don't be afraid to ask about your therapist's qualifications and experience - all laser hair removal practitioners should be licensed physicians or registered nurses.

Laser hair removal is an effective technique than can bring wonderful results. Relatively painless - expect a slight tingling sensation when the laser is in use - and long-lasting, laser hair removal is, however, a technique that requires skilled hands. Treat your skin with the respect it deserves and find a well-qualified and experienced practitioner to perform the procedure, and say goodbye to that unwanted hair.

Article written exclusively for http://www.laser-hair-removal-report.com by Fiona Condron, a professional researcher and writer. I have good and bad news.

The good news is that the hairs are much less. There are still some stragglers, but they are much fewer and far between than they were.

The bad news is that I now have ACNE along my jaw line. At first I thought it was temporary, but it seems to be here to stay.

So, if you are considering Laser Hair Removal, talk with your technician about the possibility of getting acne on your face. If so, here's an article to help you understand laser hair removal better.

A Better Understanding Of Laser Hair Removal In 5 Minutes

Men and women from all walks of life are turning in increasing numbers to laser to remove unwanted hair from their bodies. The most popular areas are faces, backs, legs, armpits and bikini lines. The latest machines allow specialists to remove hair from virtually any part of our bodies, as long as it is fully grown hair and not just peach fuzz. After six months of treatment, we can expect that somewhere between 60 and 95 percent of the treated hair will be gone.

Does laser hair removal work for everybody?

Laser hair removal works best with people who have light-colored skin and dark hair. The latest lasers work with almost all skin types, but generally speaking, people with darker skin and light-colored hair (white, grey or red) are not good candidates for laser.

If laser does not work for you, there are many other techniques you can explore, such as waxing, sugaring or electrolysis.

How does it work?

Hair grows from follicles, which are located underneath the skin. Follicles are dark in color because they contain melanin—the protein that gives color to our hair. Laser generates heat as it goes through the skin and it is attracted by the darker color of melanin. The laser rays generate enough heat to kill the follicles and prevent new hair from growing while not damaging the surrounding skin.

Our hair grows in cycles, which means that only some hairs are growing at any given time while others are dormant. Laser techniques can only target active hair so you usually need several sessions a few months apart to target all the hair in a particular area.

What about laser hair removal costs?

The American Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimates that the average session costs $388. Laser hair removal prices vary according to the area that you want treated. For example, the price of treating your upper lip is significantly lower than treating your legs or your back. Generally speaking, you can expect laser hair removal costs to range somewhere between $200 and $600, depending on the area you are treating and your clinic.

Even though laser hair removal prices can be steep, you should keep in mind that laser techniques are much more comfortable than the alternatives of electrolysis or waxing and that the results will last for years.

What should you look for in a doctor?

There are literally thousands of places offering laser hair removal, but not all of them employ certified technicians. To be on the safe side, it is best to consult with a dermatologist trained in laser hair removal. During your initial consultation, your doctor will first decide whether you are a good candidate for laser hair removal. After that, he or she will explain the procedure, ask for your medical history and give you a number of instructions to prepare for the session.

How can I prepare for my session?

Avoid tanning. Tanned skin increases the chances of skin discoloration. Also avoid waxing or plucking the area to be treated. Instead, shave the area two to three days before your appointment and allow some stubble to grow back. Some doctors might recommend that you apply a cream with lidocaine—a mild anesthetic—an hour before the session begins.

Is it safe?

Laser hair removal is a safe technique. After each session you might experience some redness and mild swelling, but this should quickly go away. It is recommended that you avoid the sun and strenuous exercise for a few days after the treatment. In some rare cases, patients might experience pain and blisters. In extreme cases, permanent scarring or skin discoloration can occur.

Jim Stacey is an editor at the Laser Hair Removal Directory where you can find more information and listings of laser hair removal providers across the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal

When considering Laser Hair Removal, it's comon to have a lot of Questions. Here's information I've uncovered to help you decide if Laser Hair Removal is right for you.

Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions

There is such excitement in this cutting edge technology for laser hair removal. In order to decide if you want to use laser hair removal, you can check online for research and then you would need a doctor consultation.

Why should you use a laser to remove hair?
Lasers can target pigmented hair while leaving the skin around the laser treatment unaffected. With each pulse of the laser, you can treat many hairs. Each pulse only takes a fraction of a second. Compare this with electrolysis and you will see that laser hair removal is much more precise and faster.

Does laser hair removal really work?
The results are quite predictable. 90% of patients usually have permanent hair loss. 10% percent of patients, no matter what you do, hair loss just does not happen. Usually after each session, most of the treated hairs by the laser fallout. After about six weeks the hair follicles that have survived gradually start growing back. But on the average with each session, approximately one third of the hairs’ treated never return back and, therefore, are permanently removed.

The remaining hairs tend to be lighter in color and also smaller in size. Patients typically, on the average, are satisfied with three to five treatments separated by two months apart. Patients that have darker colored skin may need more sessions as their skin may require lower energy levels in order to be a safe treatment.

Will it work for me individually?
A consultation is required to determine if you really are a suitable candidate for a laser hair removal procedure. Dark, coarse hairs on any part of the body usually respond well. As a rule, very fine or very lightly colored hair whether it's white, gray, or red, do not respond well to treatment.

Patients with dark complexions really need to be treated cautiously because the dark skin interferes with the laser light even before reaching the hair. With the latest technology available, there is some flexibility to treat a wide variety of patients effectively and safely.

What should I do before treatments?
Prior to treatments some protection from the sun is recommended. Usually for at least a month in advance. Tan skin increase the pigmentation and this can compete with the laser light. This can result in less effective sessions with a higher chance of side effects. The hairs in the areas that you want treated must be short but visible. It is very important not to pluck or wax the hair for a month prior to the treatments.

How long does each session usually last?
The treatment is relatively quick but also depends on the amount of hair to be treated. The laser can treat the hairs about the size of a quarter every second. A small area like the upper lip can be treated in less than a minutes, while large areas like the back or the legs may need up to an hour.

Will it hurt?
An anesthetic cream is usually recommended to numb the skin before treatments. This you will need to speak with the doctor and he can discuss with you which cream would be effective. The procedure is usually tolerated well with a mild sensation of heat tingling or stinging.

What should I expect after the Treatment?
The laser hair treatment area looks and feels much like a sunburn that usually last one to two days. You can use a cool compress and moisturizers. The area treated pretty much is usually pain-free the day after. Makeup can usually be used after the treatment unless there are blisters. Blisters, though not common, are more likely to happen in patients with darker skin. The lasered hair falls out over a month period and should not frighten you. Also, you should use sun protection for a month afterwards so it won’t change the pigment in your skin. Changes that sometimes may occur, which are permanent undesirable side effects, are scarring or skin color changes, though rare.

Again you really need to speak with a doctor before you even consider having laser hair removal. This is only general information and not to be taken as the only answers to these questions.

Copyright 2005 Fern Kuhn, RNSpecializing in Diabetes
http://www.diabetestestingcenter.com
http://www.gastricbypassreviews.info/

Note from me, I agree with most of this article from my personal experience, although I believe that side effects may be more common than are reported. Before making the decision to go forward with laser hair removal it is important to understand the removal process and to determine if you would make an ideal candidate for laser hair removal. Below we are going to talk about some of the most common questions asked before making a decision to get laser hair removal done.

Is it safe?
Yes, the removal process is safe. Some patients may notice pinkness or redness to the skin on the treated area. Most commonly the color will go back to normal in a few minutes up to a few hours. In a few rare cases it may take a few days for the normal skin color to appear. The skin color variation will depend greatly on the process used during the hair removal as there is more than one process available.

What is the laser hair removal process?
The laser hair removal process works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin. The laser beam finds the hair follicles by targeting melanin (the substance that gives skin and hair dark color). People that have dark hair and light skin are the ideal candidate for laser hair removal. However, it is important to note that the laser process will not work on those people that have red, grey or real blonde hair.

Is the hair removal process painful?
The answer to this question varies greatly by patient as everyone feels pain differently and no two people are the same. Some patients have said it feels like a pinch while other patients noted it feels like a rubber band snapping your skin. For the most part most patients have noted mild discomfort and in those cases the doctor will usually provide the patient with a mild anesthetic during the hair removal process.

How long is the hair removal process? And how many treatments will I need?
Both of these questions don’t have a single definitive answer. The length of time for removal will depend on the area being treated. How many treatments needed also have many different variables to consider making the answer different per case - skin tone, hair coloring and the coarseness of hair are all variable that help determine how many hair removal treatments will be needed.

While these are our opinions on the laser hair removal process, it is best to do your research and find out the specifics for your removal process. It’s always best to get more then one opinion and be thorough before making your decision.

About the Author
Aimee Smyth, http://www.mylaserhairremoval.info/ Aimee is the owner of My Laser Hair Removal a site that provides information about laser hair removal and what to expect during the process. (This would, in essense, look like the hairs were still growing after the first treatment.) She said I should exfoliate and use a wash cloth to speed up the process, but that, it would just take time.

The first mistake I made was to not read the handout I received after my treatment. I assumed I should start exfoliating right away. The handout says "You should avoid rubbing or scratching the area for 24 hours." OOPS. All this did was to give me more irritation in the treatment areas. That's gone away now, but it was unpleasant for a week or so.

The result right now is that it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice to just have perfectly smooth skin.

I know that I have to go back for at least 3 more laser hair treatments when the little hairs start to show back up, but I have to tell you that I'm really enjoying not having to worry or think at all about the hair. It's GONE.

Why do I have to go back? All the little hairs that were in their dormancy stages while I had my laser hair treatment, will now be in active stage and need to get zapped now. Most treatments take about 4-7 times (depending on the stubborness of the hair). My technician said, that, if her patients don't respond after a few treatments, that she sends them to their doctor to see if there is an underlying reason for the hair growth (ie, thyroid, hormones, etc.).

I mostly wanted to check in and say this beats the HECK out of tweezing. I really want my legs done next. Do you think my husband would let me have them done for a very expensive Christmas gift? ;) Imagine not having to shave again?! And, many of my friends have had their bikini area done and now don't have to worry about ingrown hairs or razor burn during swimsuit season. Awesome.

Well, I'll keep you posted on my journey. She said...

At one point in my life, I was really thin, had good hair, good skin adn not a care in the world. However, when I reached my mid 20s I ralized life was not a bowl of cherries, as thigns changed for my very quickly. After getting married and doing our thing for a few years, my husnband and I decided it was time to start our family so at age 28 I was ready to roll!!! The only problem is my body was not. Is topped taking birth control pills and by six months later I still had no menstrual cycle and noticed I had put on a ridiculous amount of weight, how about close to 100 pounds!!!! Not only that I started to notice facial and body hair in places it should not be like my chin, chest and toes.. I started to have acne breakouts, dark skin patches round my neck, on my knees and a couple of other areas, I was gettng tired all of the time and just felt liek something wasn;t right. So, I did what most people would logically do, I talked to my general practioner and told him I don't know what is going on I put on wieght, I still don't have my period, why is this happening. His response.... You are overeating, you are fat, get on a diet, exercise and you'll be fine you don;t have your period becasue you got fat!!!! We'll that was strange being I did not change my eating habit, contrary to popular belief and had not changed my busy lifestyle which always kept me fairly fit.

In any case I went through searching for answers for about a year before I found a young general practioner Dr. Mark Harmon who had the knowledge and insight to diagnosis me with PCOS ( Polycystc Ovary Syndrome) Now this gets a little confusing.... It is called PCOS becasue in most cases of PCOS women will display a tiny pearl like chain of cysts on their ovary or ovaries. However, it is not a gynecological problem, it is in fact an endocrine problem!!! So, I now knew what I had problem was it was the reason I was noit getting my period which was now about to one year without having one!!! I was told at that time when they still did not know much about treating PCOS that I might be faced with being infertile and he sent me to a reporductive endocrinologist. Fortunately, with losing some weight using a low carb diet to help get my insulin resistance under control I was able to conceive my first child with the use of Clomid and oral medication used for infertility.

After I had my daughter I decided I wanted to get healthy for me and for her and found a wonderful doctor and clinic located in Phialdelphia The PCOS Center A Drexel University/Hahnemann Hospital. They put me on what at the time was a realtively new medication for PCOS patients called Metformin ( It is often used in diabetic patients but, works for PCOS patients as the symptoms of PCOS mimic many symptoms of diabetieis an PCOS is a pre cursor to diabetes) Along with other medications, rigid control over my diet with low carb, low sugar and exercise, I am now living a much healthier lifestyle, have lost weight and now also have a son!

Now that you know my story some other details about PCOS are Up to 15 million women and girls in the U.S. alone have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a complex hormonal disorder for which there is no cure and less tha half know they have it.

Not only does PCOS cause devastating short term effects such as infertility, obesity, acne, hair loss and excess facial and body hair, PCOS has a substantial negative impact on quality of life because of the disorder’s multi-system conditions.

PCOS can include the following symptoms

Irregular or absent menses

Numerous cysts on the ovaries in many, but not all, cases

High blood pressure

Acne

Elevated insulin levels, Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes

Infertility

Excess hair on the face and body

Thinning of the scalp hair (alopecia)

Weight Problems or obesity that is centered around your mid section

So what is PCOS again???

Is also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome or Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD).

Affects an estimated 6-10% of all women and most don't even know they have it.

Is treatable, but not curable, by medications, changes in diet and exercise.

Is one of the leading causes of infertility in women.

Has been identified for 75 years and they still aren't sure what causes it.

Affects far more than just reproduction.

IT IS NOT just a cosmetic problem.

Some resources:
PCOSA Website - Has a quiz to deteremine if it is probable you have PCOS!http://www.pcosupport.org

PCOS Pals - A Yahoo group and community I started for support and information for women, girls and their families dealing with PCOS
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/PCOS-Pals/

PCOS Strategies (I am on their advisory board)
http://www.pcostrategies.org

Soul Cysters - A great PCOS Community
http://www.soulcysters.com/

First Laser Hair Removal Treatment Today. OUCH!

I called and scheduled my first laser hair removal treatment today. It was actually fascinating.

I went to the office of an older woman who works alone. I walked in and she asked what I wanted done. I showed her my jawline and she immediately said

"You have hypo-thyroid, don't you."

Actually I do. She said that most of her patients who complain about the jawlines DO have hypo-thyroid and she's doing a study to prove the correlation.

And, she said that the women she sees who have hair problems in the center of their faces (upper lip and chin) oftentimes have insulin problems.

I found this fascinating!

So, I filled out my paperwork and received a quick lesson on how the laser treatment works -- basically by ZAPPING the base of the hair. She said that I may not see much improvement after the first treatment, but not to be discouraged. And, that, after a few days, I'll see the pulverized hairs coming out. She recommended exfoliating the area if it was bothering me.

Next I followed her into her lab. I laid on the table and put on the laser glasses (eye protection). She wiped my skin with an alcohol to clean it and then turned on the machine.

First of all - OUCH - Feels like getting your ears pierced at times. Other times, not so bad.
Secondly - STINKY! - Guess what? It smells like burning hair!

So, she repeatedly zapped my skin with the laser. It was bright - even through the glasses and did hurt more in my 'problem areas' than in the less 'problem areas'. And, I realized I was holding my breath because it was stinky. Nothing like the smell of burning hair right before dinner!

Afterwards, she laid a cool wet washcloth across my face to cool it off. Then, she rubbed some anti-itch gel on a few times. My face still looked slightly burned for several hours, but it doesn't hurt at all now.

She did say, that, if the treatments didn't work after the 4th time, she wanted me to go back to my doctor to have my thyroid retested to make sure my Synthroid is at the right levels. I'll do that anyway.

So, that's the adventure of the FIRST laser hair treatment. Stay tuned for more in the saga...
Florida Gal

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://laserhairremovalodyssey.blogspot.com/2005/04/first-laser-hair-removal-treatment.html' title='First Laser Hair Removal Treatment Today. Thank you to the author for granting reprint rights. :)

Removing Unwanted Body Hair Permanently & Safely?

Both males and females have unwanted hairs in their body. Everybody wishes to be fresh and energetic. It can be done in a many number of ways according the level of hairs in the body. It is found that around 80% of the women and around 50% of the men are going for hair removal in some form or the other. Facial hair removal is more popular among men and women.

Hair removal in the hands, legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, face, and eyebrows are commonly practiced these days. Sports persons go for hair removal since it will cut down the wind resistance and improve their competitive speeds. There is a report saying that hair removal salons are getting more and more men customers for removing hair.

Different devices are used for hair removal in different parts of the body. Waxing, sugaring, and electrolysis are the most preferred methods for permanent body hair removal. Laser treatments are also used for permanent body hair removal. Waxing is a method of hair removal in which wax is applied over the hairs and then a cotton strip is rubbed on the wax in the direction of the hair growth.

Waxing and sugaring are done for male body hair removal. Waxing removes the hairs from the roots and hence the regrowth of hairs in the removed area takes between 6 to 8 weeks. After hair removal through waxing even if the hair grows it is thinner and is sparser in the area. There are not many hairs in that area. Upon further hair removal the hair may go off permanently. Usage of a hair growth inhibitor after male body hair removal through waxing is usually done to reduce the growth of hairs in that area.

Then the cotton strip is removed in the opposite direction of the hair growth for permanent body hair removal. Sugaring is also a method that is used for hair removal permanently. The difference is the sugar paste instead of wax for removal. Whether a person is using waxing or sugaring he is advised to use a hair growth inhibitor after the removal of hairs to prevent hair growth or to slow down the growth of hairs.

Most of the sports persons who are involved in the sports like swimming and cycling opt for permanent body hair removal, since permanent body hair removal would improve their speeds by reducing the air friction. There are many devices that are used for permanent body hair removal. Each device comes with its own functionality and ease of use with a price tag that is affordable.

Electrolysis and Laser treatments remove the hairs permanently from the skin. In these methods the hair follicle is destroyed so that the hair does not grow again. Electrolysis method uses needles to supply electric current to the hair follicles. This electric current creates some chemical changes or generates heat to destroy the hair follicles. In Laser treatment the laser beams are directed towards the hair follicles to destroy it. Laser treatments are costly when compared to other methods of hair removal.

If you need more information about body hair removal pls visit : http://www.natural-treatment-guide.com/hairremoval/hairremoval-intro.html To learn more about various methods used to remove body hair permanently & safely, kindly visit: http://www.natural-treatment-guide.com/hairremoval/permanent-hairremoval-system.html

I made the Call!

I actually picked up the phone today and called Laser Hair Removal Places here in Florida. I'd been thinking about Laser Hair Removal for about a year, since I heard a model mention on the Howard Stern Show. When she said she had it done 3 years ago and now never has to shave, I was sold. But, of course, the money aspect and actually getting around to it took a little time.

I ended up calling three places. The first two places I called didn't give me the warm fuzzies. If I'm going to do this, I sure want to be coddled a little. Does it hurt to give a LITTLE customer service and hand-holding? GEESH. The third place was a God-send. An older woman who obviously understood that this wasn't an easy phone call to make. Thank Goodness I didn't give up or worse, decide to work with one of the Crabbies at the other two places.

So, my first question was what should I have done? As much as we women hate to admit it, we're mammals. So, I've got 5'7" of skin to consider here.

I chatted with my husband and I told him that the thing that bothers me most are the hairs above the neck. He, of course, said "Where?" and started squinting and looking for them. For the men out there, that's the WRONG thing to do. Of course he recovered with a quick "You're beautiful" which was a start, but then I got the "How much is this going to cost" right after it. (again, wrong thing to say)

So, the area I chose is called the 'chin', although I really don't have any hairs on my chin. They are moreso by the jawline. The big shocker was that, since I had been plucking the hairs, I have to go THREE to SIX weeks without plucking before my first treatment. The lady I finally liked (of the three places I called) was older and she said "Honey, if the hairs bother you during the 3 weeks, just run a dry razor over them and use a lot of makeup!" She was very sweet, although it wasn't my most "I'm too sexy ..." moment.

Well, more soon. But, that's the first step on this journey. I figure, at 30 something, and a mom, I deserve to do something nice for myself.

Wish me luck!
Laser Hair Removal Newbie in Florida
