DIY vampire teeth

My 12 yr daughter wanted to be a vampire for Halloween this year and we had issues coming up with ways for her to have vampire teeth.

I went to a Halloween shop and found these super cool teeth that glue onto your incisors.

but they were $10 and for just one little part of a costume I thought that was a bit much. It didn't help that it was not recommended for children.

Another problem that we had that made these (and almost every other idea I had) not work is this

she is missing one of her incisors and the other is just starting to grow in.

One idea was those cheep novelty fanged teeth

but believe it or not we could not find these anywhere. I'm sure most of us had a pair of these at one time in our childhood. From what I remember they were very uncomfortable and were hard to keep in and to talk with too. I figured there had to be a easy but better way.

So I went to youtube to see what I could find.

First I found this video

Even though these are awesome I didn't have the time to make the different molds and once again she didn't have incisor teeth to work with. Not to mention the price would probably be more than the ones at the Halloween shop.

Then I found this cute little video

What is she? 5? So stinking cute. She takes a little while to get to the point but this is a neat tempory idea. But once again we ran into the problem with no incisors to work with.

Then I found this one that was a spring board for my idea.

This idea by itself is great but, you know, the incisor thing.

So I went to the store to see what I could come up with. I went to the Dollar General up the street from my house. Just so you know I decided to tackle this about 1 1/2 hours before we were heading out to trick or treat.

I found the nails

they were only $1.

Then I went looking for the denture cream to see if maybe I could just stick it to her gum. That's basically what dentures do right?

That is when I saw this

and the little spark went off. Since it was only $2 I thought sure why not.

I got home and chose which nail would work best in her mouth, which happened to be the smallest.

Then I filed them down but not to pointy so that it wouldn't accidentally poke or cut her.

Then I glued them onto the mouth guard. I wanted to use super glue but since I didn't have any and also since this would be in her mouth I didn't know how toxic that could be so I just used hot glue. They can peel off fairly easy so it was easy to adjust but they stayed on good enough that they lasted the night.

See the guard sits up on the gum line. When she closes her mouth you can't even see the guard or the top of the fake nail.

They look awesome if I do say so myself and for $3 it was a perfect fit (even without incisor teeth lol)

She was very excited about them and they definitely topped off her costume.

Outdoor Changing Room

My kids love to play in the pool. They would literally spend all day out there if you would let them.

As summer seems to be already here I have no problems with them spending lots of time out in the pool. It sure does make bedtime a lot easier. To help cut down on laundry I put up a little clothes line so that they could hang their bathing suits and towels out to dry.

It's only about 4 ft high so they all can reach it to hang their stuff out. The only problem I had then was that they would come in dripping wet after walking through the grass and dirt and that left wet, muddy tracks though the house and on some days they come in just to eat and turn around to go right back out. And sometimes they were too lazy to take their stuff back out to the line. I can't really blame them swimming is hard work, but that left wet suits and towels all over the bathroom floor.

So with the help of my awesome brother we set to work with a solution to my problem.

King of the hardware store

Here is Matt, my brother. He found that thing that he has on his head and crowned himself king. He is just so fun to be around. You can also see that he is carrying an armload of PVC pipe. He insisted on carrying it all. He is sweet like that too.

So this is what we came up with.

It is an outdoor changing room. I didn't take pics of us putting it together (I really need to get better at that). It is made out of PVC pipe and it is 5ft wide x 4ft deep and about 5ft tall. We bought 4 10ft 3/4 inch pipes and cut them down to 6ft. So we had 4 4ft pipes and 4 6ft pipes. The 6ft pipes were hammered into the ground about a foot. They were our 4 corners. The 4ft pipes were our sides and we also got a 5ft pipe that went across the front.

After figuring out the dimensions I was trying to decide what to use as curtains. My original thought was to use shower curtains but after we found out that we would need three of them and the cheapest that I could find, that were not see through, were $12 a piece I thought I could come up with something better. After looking around we came across some flat sheets and we figured out that if we turned them sideways we would only need two of them and at $5 each it was really a no brainer.

I did have some hemming to do though. Leaving it like it was would make them about 6 inches too long. So I did a double hem of 1 1/2 inches at the top and a 3 1/2 inch hem at the bottom.

Here you can see where I hemmed it at top and added buttonholes so that we could use shower curtain rings to hang it up. It was the first time that I used my buttonhole maker on my sewing machine and after a little practice they were a piece of cake to make.

After cutting all the PVC pipe for the structure we had 2 4ft sections left over so I put them in the bottom hem to help weight it down. They matched up perfect with the 4ft sides. Then in the bottom corners of the front sections I put a 1in flat glass pebble to help keep the curtains closed.

Here is a glimpse of the inside. As you can see I am slowly adding paving stones to help cut down on the grass that sticks to their feet. I have a few more to get.

It turned out a lot better then I thought it would. Now when they get out of the pool they go into their changing room take off their bathing suits, dry off, put on their coverups and then hang their stuff on the line and come on in. No dripping wet stuff to deal with and no wet, muddy tracks all through the house. Then when they are ready to go back out they just put their coverups back on (that is if they have changed out of them) head out, pull their bathing suits off the line change into them and hop back into the pool. Easy peasy. It has really worked out great so far.

Heavy Heart

I have such a heavy heart tonight. I have a couple of online friends who are dealing with some tough things that I know all to well what it is that they are going through. I also have another online friend who has a young child that has an incurable disease and they are having to make tough decisions for him and I also have a church family who lost their son/brother today (he was 22) and I hope that I never have to know what that is like. My prayer is that God finds ways to provide comfort and strength to all who need it.

In the past 10 months I have known more sorrow in my life than I have the other 32 years. I find though that I have more emphany because of it. When bad things happened to people before, I never knew what to say. I always found that when I did reach out I would feel awkward and I would say something completely stupid and maybe not even approate at that moment. I had not really known sorrow in my life. I have had death in my family but it was older grandparents that had been sick and it was known that it was their time. My parents are still married and are going strong. I was happily married to a loving husband with healthy, beautiful children. Although I could sympathize with someone going though a hard time in their life, I really didn't completely understand.

Now, going through a seperation and being betryed by the one person whom I loved most in this world, I know what to say to those going through the same thing. I know because of what others said to me. I have had such encouagement and love poured on me through my tough time that I can understand how much others need that too.

But the death of a child? A sick or dying child? I just don't know. I don't want to know and then I feel selfish saying that. The truth is I don't want anyone to have to know what that feels like, but this is life and death is a part of it.

It is through trials that our faith is tested. We find out what we are made of. We find our strength, our worth, even our true friends through the tough times. I wish there was an easier way but I know sometimes there is just no other way. So to all of you who are hurting, lonely, scared and/or lost, my prayer goes to you too. May God find ways to provide comfort and strength to all who need it. Amen.

Ballard Design inspired.

Last year this picture showed up in Ballard Design's catalog and I remember several projects that were created using this as an inspiration.

This has been on my to do list since I first started seeing them and I finally got around to making my own. (Better late than never right?). I didn't take step by step pictures but you will get the idea.

I used foam wreaths from the Dollar Tree, which they don't seem to carry anymore :(. I got 6 of them (thank goodness I got them while they had them).

I tried spray painting them black but they didn't look right. I think I got a matte black and it just turn out aweful. So what I did was I wrapped them in black ribbon.

I also got 6 round silver trays from the Dollar tree and hot glued the wreath to it. Using my Cricut and a program call Sure Cuts A Lot I cut out letters using the font Black Rose.

After cutting the letters out I used Modge Podge and then covered them in Martha Steward glitter (the best glitter in my opinion) to give them some depth. I used the color Onyx.

See so sparkly.

It took me forever to come up with a word. If you have been following my blog for any length of time you know about my love for words. I have been wanting to do this project for almost a year now and I had so many words I wanted to use. Just like in the original I love the word create and thought about using that. I also thought about the words family, love and faith. I had a really hard time deciding. Since these would be going above my bed I finally figured out what word I wanted to use.

If you can't tell it says dreams. I tried to get a good pic but I was using the camera on my phone and the plates kept reflecting the light in funny ways. It looks so good in person.

After I got them all hung up I thought of one more little thing I wanted to add

Using black scrapbooking paper and my Cricut again I cut out the word sweet. I used the font Baroque Script this time.

I love how it turned out. Now I can go to bed every night with sweet dreams.

My next project is going to be a headboard, which has been on my to do list forever also, but I know that I will get it done one day :).

Butterfly Collage

I have a really good friend named Anna who has really been there for me the past several months and I wanted to make her something special to show my appreciation for her friendship. Anna loves butterflies and when I saw this

at The Crafty Crow I knew what I was going to do.

I went and raided my mom's punches to find a butterfly punch and found these

three different sizes of the same butterfly. That made me think about a different kind of collage that I saw awhile ago but I couldn't find it when I went searching for it. But I did find something similar to what I remembered.

I found this over at Craftster.

I liked both ideas so I did a combo of both.

Anna's favorite color is blue so I painted a canvas metallic blue. I wanted something simple so I just punched several butterflies in each size out of plain paper. I placed them on the canvas rearranging it till I like the look and then glued them down. On the larger butterflies I bent them in the middle a little to give some pop to the collage. I really like how it turned out and I hope Anna likes it.
