It's been oh, well, 6 months since my last post. Shame on me! I thought everyone might like a mini update to hear what I've been up to all this time.

Things around here are superb; Derby is such a good girl! We've been doing a lot of training to get her less cautious of people and she's doing marvelously -- she's such a smart dog!

Recently, we entered to win a Collar of the Month subscription from our favorite collar company Lucky Fiona (and if you love handmade fabric collars, Lucky Fiona is an absolute MUST!) The contest was a "makeover my pet" contest, so we whipped up a little movie and we tied with the most darling bloodhound boy named Teddy, who has a very rags-to-riches story. I thought he would win most certainly, but because Lucky Fiona is so awesome, we both were made winners!

Here's the movie we entered :)

We've been planting a lot of flowers and doing some general yard beautification, too. No edible garden this year -- we had some trouble with our deck collapsing (don't ask...) so we decided to focus on the front yard and I'm so happy we did. I promise to post some photos once my salieri daylilies bloom. Here's what they might look like:

We also have yellow daylilies, Easter lilies, azaleas, mums, forsythia, a little white bleeding heart, hostas, a purple flower who's name I can't remember, and 3 hydrangeas (pink, white, and blue). Everything is doing well but for one of the forsythias...for some reason, though planted at the same time as the other, it's a little pale and not looking so good. Not sure what the cause is, but it's a shame. I hope I don't have to replace it!

It's hard to believe it's almost July. Where has the time gone? I have a bunch of great craft projects in the works, so more posts on those later -- sewing some awesome clothing pieces for my sister. I can't wait to show you! Also, I've lost 18 pounds since March. Crazy, right?! I'm on the Take Shape for Life Medifast plan and it WORKS. I've been dedicated and man, oh man. I feel so good. I really should start making some clothes for myself and show off this trimmed up frame ;o) If you want to learn more about the program or have any questions, check out my Health Coach Dan's website at http://ohiodan.tsfl.com/ -- he has lost 119 pounds since last August. Now that, my friends, is outstanding success. He's a great coach and will help you get feeling better. One of these days, I'll share some of my favorite Medifast food hacks recipes with you! I'm 4-5 pounds from hitting my goal weight...I might even share my before/after (though I shudder to think of posting my before pictures on the internet LOL -- but hey. If it could inspire someone else to take the plunge, it's worth public humiliation :o)

500th Post...and Our Puppy

She LOVES to watch football.

So. 500 posts. Who on earth would've thought that I could manage to pull THAT off?! Certainly not me! It has been awhile since any real posts, but that's because I'm livin, folks! Not that I don't miss blogging, because I do, but I have a pretty good reason. Her name is Derby and she's the newest addition to our little family.

Here is her story...
I had been a fan and follower of Ohio English Setter Rescue for about a year before we took the leap into fostering, which we knew would be an incredibly rewarding experience and help provide unconditional love and support for a rescue dog. After application approval, passing our home check, fixing a fence, many conversations, pup meet-ups, and a LOT of discussion (truth be told, we were nervous and carefully weighed every option, scenario, and never forgot our beautiful senior kitty gal Wink throughout the process), we knew that OESR was a group of people who were exactly our kind of people and we were committed to becoming part of their organization one way or another. We also knew that when it was right, it would be right, that we would know it, and the rest would be history...

There she is...far right.

Well, during all of this time, OESR rescued an English Setter named Jordie from a high kill shelter. And she was pregnant. Oh boy. Oh boy and five girls, as it turned out. All the pups were born late June 2011 at foster momma R's house and they were the. cutest. puppies. ever. But I really didn't want a puppy. Really and truly. I wanted to give a home to an adult. Maybe even a senior dog. I felt it was a calling for me, but...But. Bubs felt a bit differently about that. He had his eye on those pups. Oh boy did he.

As a bit more time passed, Jordie momma dog was adopted out and one, by one, the pups, too, were both fostered out and found their forever homes. But R. held on to the little brownie bundle of puppy love named Josie. Josie was the one pup who was different in the litter. Out of the 6 pups, she was the one born with the most color and, of course, being the odd girl out, she tugged at my heartstrings.

Josie's first foster DogMomma R. is a rock star. She's a wife, mom, dogmom to her own pack and, on top of that, she went back to school to become a vet. She had fostered Jordie during her pregnancy and was there for the entire whelping. Needless to say, she was (and is) a busy, busy lady -- one who made the very hard choice to love this pup enough to let her go. This was an incredibly difficult thing for her (trust me, you'll see how much stronger she was than me!) and her family to do, but she had Josie's best interests in mind through and through. Fate played her hand in all of this, because once I came to learn that R. might be looking for a new foster home for 3-month old Josie, I told Bubs and, after a few more phone calls and coordination, we got the green light to take over Josie's fostership and we drove to pick up our new little foster babydog!

And she was perfect. She snuggled in my lap the entire 2 hour car ride. She went potty outside at a rest stop. She didn't pee or barf on me. It was love at first sight.

Wow. It was not easy! I was raw nerves those first few days. (From what people tell me, it's a lot like what having a new baby is like...) But after some time, we found a routine and stuck with it. We were up 3 times a night for almost 2 months so we could housebreak her, knowing that even though difficult, it would be worth it in the long run to support her early. We taught her to sit, stay, come, lay down and shake with both paws. She had all the right toys to chew on (and only the toe of one flip flop and the side of one slipper ever was chewed - not bad for damage control lol!) She was our little genius dog. We were going to help her be the best dog we could help her be for her future forever family.

A couple months passed and conversations came up about whether or not we would adopt her. I stuck to my commitment as a foster (and no one believed me...), knowing that letting her go would break my heart...but I told myself it was for the best. And then, after 2 months of our fostering, she was put on Petfinder. And the next day, an application came through from someone very, very far away. And I cried. A lot. Bubs sulked in his man cave. The truth was, neither of us wanted to let her go, but it took the thought of never seeing her again to help us to see that. Even though everyone at OESR had warned us, that once an application for her was in, there's no going back if it got approved. We KNEW that. But with a hope and a prayer, we let them know that if, for whatever reason that first application didn't get approved, that we wanted to adopt her -- and so we put in our application, too. (We were such jerks. How we had waited so long is beyond me...I chalk it up to major anxiety and commitment issues. God bless OESR for putting up with us and, specifically, my neuroses.) After a little less than a week, the planets aligned (and fate once again played her hand) and we got the joyous news..."Congratulations, it's a girl!" And the rest is history...and just the beginning of our glorious foster failure.Bubs said an English dog needs an English name, so we renamed Josie to Derby. She's now our little "brown" Derby and she the best little girl ever. I never thought I'd be one of those people...the kind who forgoes normal adult conversation to tell people about Derby's poops or the custom, handmade coat I bought for her on Etsy, but I am 100% that guy and loving every minute. She helps me see the humor in everything. To get outside more (even if it means being on poop patrol), to meet new friends at the dog park, to smile and laugh, to watch my tone, to grow up.

Derby's 6-1/2 months old now and growing like a weed. She loves chewies, her stuffed duck (which is really a pheasant I think, stuffingless, beakless and stinks to high heaven), belly rubs, playing at the dog park, shaking for treats and digging holes in the back yard (but we're working on that one...) I could go on and on, but this post is long enough...I can't wait to share more funny stories and cute pics later. Thanks for stopping by :o)

Happy 2012 everyone! Yep. I'm alive, though barely (I rang in the new year with food poisoning. Oh what fun that was...) And yes. I've been a MAJOR blog slacker this year, but for good reason. Canopy Beds: To Curtain or not to Curtain?

So. I have a big ol' canopy bed. Actually, it is similar to this one here (though mine is not as ornately carved). Very British-West-Indies-meets-farmhouse. I utterly adore it.

Bombay Company (alas, no longer in the US)

Like this one, my bed has those 4 horizontal slats across the top of the bed. All I do is stare at the center two. I'm not sure I want them there. They sort of bug me. I catch myself staring at them when I'm trying to fall asleep. I dream of ways to fix that sitch because it's weird to obsess over 2 silly slats. Options? Oh yes.

1. I could remove them entirely and have only the 4 outside slats (PS our ceiling vaults this same way):

Which look do you like the best? I'm leaning toward either removing the 2 middle slats or adding simple tie-on curtains. There's something very cozy when I think of cuddling up behind drawn bed curtains as the weather gets colder. If they tie on, it would be very easy to clean them, too. Hmm...decisions, decisions.

Happy September you crazy kids!

Truth be told, I'm ready. I'm ready for cooler temps, fewer mosquitoes, open windows, Boardwalk Empire (I'm such an HBO Sunday night junkie) and gearing up for the holiday shopping season at Hello Magpie.

Is it too early to start thinking holiday shopping? Heck no! I'm already starting my list...beginning with one of my favorite UK shops Labour and Wait. It's practically impossible for me to start narrowing my wish list, but I will try.

With the end of summer upon us, is there anything special you're looking forward to as the seasons change?

Crocheted Clothes for Kiddos

Confession Friday time. I have an obsession with finding adorable kid's clothing patterns (yes, it's an obsession and no, I don't have kids. Yet.) I save them all up with dreams of dressing my own little brood in classically delish little outfits (because I'm an 'outfits' kinda gal.)

My most recent quest has been to find crocheted sweaters and jackets leaning more toward the timeless classic aesthetic more than pretty much everything else I'm seeing out there. Aaaand. I'm coming up short. I've managed to find about a dozen completely perfect baby-sized cardis, sweaters and jackets, but beyond that -- for the toddling age, I'm coming up short. Sad, isn't it? You more advanced crocheters might be thinking "well, just whip up yourself a larger version of the baby pattern!" I've tried. I've failed. My patience is running short.

However, I did come upon a darling French Etsian called Chez Plum and fell in love with the Roselette Pattern. It comes in lots of sizes AND she even sells a grown-up version! For $5 it was too cute to pass up, so I bought it last night and started working the pattern today. At only 6 rows in, it's crazy quick to make and working up really well. Love it so far! Can't wait to post pics later!

So crafty folks, do you have any classic crocheted clothing patterns for kiddos of all ages?

Library Meets Dining Room

What do you think of dining rooms with shelving? I'm seeing images popping up more frequently lately of dining spaces with shelving -- whether they be built-ins, floating shelves, armoires, etc. Does it not only work for small spaces, but for larger spaces, too? We have a gross lack of plain, flat, usable wall space in our home. AND quite a lot of books. Shelves of some sort could act as a design element AND be functional. But books in my dining room? Is it weird? Could it work? These photos almost make me think it could...

Urban garden update: progress of my early girl tomatoes and green beans is astounding. Check these babies out! Seriously, beans already?! This little plant isn't even 12" tall yet -- heck, one of those beans is nearly the length of the plant itself! Time to to some staking up already! Woop woop!

Granny Square Blanket of Epic Proportions

Actually, it's about the size of a large lap blanket, BUT! It is made of one big @ss granny square, so Epic-level Granny Square blanket it is. 100% Patons wool yarn in a plethora of warm colors. Looks pretty nice on our sofa, if I do say so myself. Wool is quickly becoming my favorite fiber ever, and that's without being swayed by the cuteness of sheep, I swear.

Yay! New shoes! My first pair of vintage saddles just were | - | that much too snug around the width of my foot at the vamp (where the black part starts at the top of my foot), so I kept my peepers open on both eBay and Etsy for another (preferably vintie) pair. Voila! $15 on eBay for a perfect 1/2 size up pair. Though not vintage, they're a perfect reproduction -- complete with hard Biltrite soles. Can't wait to get these puppies broken in! So, if you know of anyone who can fit a US-6 and is interested in a solid pair of vintie saddles, email me :o)

Happy St. Patrick's Day, dears! Not sure what my plans for the day entail (aside from work, that is) but I hope it involves corned beef and maybe a Guinness (but I'd settle for a Heineken. Hey! It's in a green bottle!)

What I really want to do, however, is make these (above) darling little rice treats a la Twig & Thistle. Seriously. Does Kathleen's creativity know no bounds?! I adore her blog. You could spend hours reading all its loveliness! And tell me those details don't just getcha...from the minty green cake stand, the vintie floral fabric, and those scallop-edged paper sheets...Oh to have a world this lovely all the time!

So, regardless of your plans for the day, I do wish you loveliness and laughter. Get inspired and try a new project! Anything to make you smile (and go pinch someone not wearing green!)

Spring Cleaning: Bedroom

Ok folks. I need to come clean about some things. Literally. Like the 84 million pairs of tatty pajama pants I had to cram into my dresser. My guilty habit of attaching sentimental value to clothing I wore a lifetime ago, back when I was this whole other person. The skinny clothes and fat clothes, none of which made me feel beautiful.

A good start...

For whatever reason or another, I decided this past Friday that I was going to clean out my closet. For reals this time. I then referred to this monumental occasion as the Cathartic Closet Cleaning Experience. And boy was it.

I'm not going to go into the gory details, but I will tell you these few things:

1. I donated 4 bags and 2 bins FULL of stuff.
2. I made a nice chunk of change selling a whole bunch more.
3. Something was seriously wrong with me that I didn't get rid of that crap a long time ago.
4. I know, without a doubt, I will never neglect my closet like that again.
5. My future will focus on quality over quantity.
6. I will have absolutely NO regrets for letting go of any of it. It's just stuff taking up space.
7. That stuff doesn't define me. I won't let it.
8. I will love myself for who I am right now and embrace it with clothing that fits and flatters right now.
9. If I happen to work hard and lose weight, what was I thinking I'd wear 10 year old clothes? Hello!
10. This is only the beginning...I'm going to tackle the entire house, one space at a time.

Still too many shoes, but no one's perfect!

So, the moral of the story is: let it go. Let it ALL go. It's just stuff. Don't dwell in the "what ifs" and memories you've attached to stuff. Because it's stuff. And it's probably old, ill-fitting, the wrong color, looks like there was a reason it was on sale, I promise if you haven't worn it yet you won't kinda stuff.

I mustered up the gumption (that's for you Bubs ♥) to toss out the old me via my wardrobe this time, but I know some things are easier said that done. As if a sign from God that I was venturing on the right path, before I did The Big Clean on Saturday, I read an article in the March issue of Whole Living about getting rid of stuff cluttering your life. It even comes with a flow chart! I adore a good flow chart. Check out this guide for help on getting started & getting finished (sometimes that's the tricky bit.) It's well worth the read. Then unplug, crank up the tunes, and get to work. I'm willing to bet you might just find yourself under all that stuff. xo

Gosh, it's been ages, hasn't it? It sure feels nice to pop in to wish everyone a happy Valentine's Monday!

Though missing my blog terribly, I am happy to report that things offline for me have been amazing these last few months. My Etsy shop OhHelloMagpie, in particular, has filled my days with such tremendous success and joy, I can hardly believe it! If that weren't enough, however, I am also working part-time in a fantastic local chiropractic office, of which reflects many of my personal beliefs on whole-body wellness. All in all, 2011 is shaping up to be a peaceful, happy, healthy year -- one chock full o' love!

One thing I wanted to today, in particular, is share a fun blog, of which came to me through Amy, a work friend of my husband's who knows my love of all things handmade. Holidays by Hand is the blog of Amy's sister-in-law! It's a pretty new endeavor, but I think it's shaping up to be a great resource for all things handmade at the holidays. Be sure to pop over for a look...she has already compiled and shared lots of great Valentine's Day projects!
