As widely expected, when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took to the stage in San Francisco to deliver the keynote address at the annual BUILD developers conference he outlined the company's future strategy and revealed a number of impressive updates to the Windows 8 operating system.

Although Windows 8.1 won't officially launch until the end of 2013, consumers whose computers currently run Windows 8 can download a preview edition of the new operating system to get to grips with the changes, the best of which include:

High-resolution display supportThe updated software now automatically expands or contracts icons and page furniture to match the resolution and size of a connected display. This is a key addition for consumers who want to use a tablet as their primary device but then dock it with a keyboard and standalone monitor (or even an HD TV) for home or office use.

Photosynth

Microsoft's take on panoramic photography, this built-in app will automatically join smaller images together to create one panoramic whole.

Cataloguing appsIt's hard to believe that in Windows 8 there is no simple, straightforward way of viewing all of the apps installed on a computer together as a unified list. This problem has been dealt with rather elegantly and now a single swipe up pulls up a user's list of installed apps.

The start buttonIts return is no surprise, Microsoft touted its arrival as a way of showing it was listening to its users. However, the way it has been integrated is slightly different from start buttons of old. Clicking on it does not pull up a start menu from the task bar which expands in outward sections as the user rolls a mouse over. Instead, clicking on ‘Start' opens a start page.

3D printingProving that the company really is looking to the future rather than simply trying to second-guess its competitors, Windows 8 will have native support for 3D printing. It means that companies that are gearing up to make consumer-focused 3D printers will be able to use Microsoft's official, supported code to write printer drivers for their products. But why stop at drivers, they can also create dialog boxes and even small, touch-responsive applications to support their printers.

Installing Windows 8.1 previewIf you want to test out the revamped operating system for yourself, downloading the preview edition of Windows 8.1 is very straightforward.

Go to the Windows 8.1 preview page and download an update file and follow the instructions.

The above statement says that u can leave any 2 theory subjects from 1,2,3,4 Years (I & II Sem) which carries 4 credits each. At most u can leave only 8 credits. But u need to clear all practical subjects (Labs), Mini & Major Project & Seminar.

Ans : Practical subjects are Labs in each semester.

Example : If a student of R07 regulation has a backlog in MICRO PROCESSOR Theory subject then he can leave that subject. But he can't leave the Micro Processor Lab.

Q) Does JNTU mention any FAIL or Star Mark in the certificates if i leave 1 or 2 subjects ?
Ans : For JNTU-KAKINADA students In the PC there will not be any indication of Fail. But on the concerned semester marks memo "Fail" will be indicated and also on Consolidated Marks Memo (CMM) "Fail" will appear for those one/two subjects.

Note: Star Mark(*) indicates that those 2 subjects marks are excluded while calculating the total %.

Q) If i clear all the subjects & secure 224 credits will i get any star mark in my CMM?
Ans : Yes u will get the star mark in the subjects in which u secured least marks. Star Mark indicates that those 2 subjects marks are excluded while calculating the total %. You can see a sample CMM from the below.

Q) What is the Difference between the students who secured 216 credits & 224 credits?
Ans : For the students who secures 216 credits (failed/leaving 2 subjects) they will exclude those 2 subjects only in which he failed while calculating total %. where as for the students who secured 224 credits JNTU will exclude 2 subjects in which he/she secured least marks.

Q) What happens if i fail & leave those one/two subjects. Does it effect my carrier ?
Ans :

Many of the companies recruits only the students who does not have any active backlogs/arrears.

Suppose a CSE student fails in Operating Systems and Computer Organization courses and applies for a PC, this may affect in getting a job. An ECE student who failed in VLSI and DSP subjects may not get admission in M.Tech in VLSI/DSP specializations.Similarly for other branch students.

If a candidate is in urgency to submit the PC for Visa, for higher studies then he/she may apply for PC even they acquire 216 or 220 credits, because that may not affect them.

Therefore if there is no urgent requirement for PC, it is better, the students pass all the subjects and take PC. The students have the option to apply for PC at any time if it is required. They have to apply through 'Tatkal' if they require it immediately.

Q) I had applied for the CMM,PC by filling the undertaking form, can i attend for supple exams ?
Ans : No u can't attend for the supple exams of those subjects that u had applied in the exception of 2 subjects rule.

Q) I had given my supple for 1 or 2 subjects exams & before the results are declared i had applied for the CMM,PC by filling the undertaking form.Will there be any problem & does i get my result now?
Ans : There wont be any problem. u will not get the results Once if u apply for the CMM,PC under the exception of 2 subjects rule.

Q) Can i get my PC,CMM after clearing all the subjects (i.e., securing 224 credits) ?
Ans : Yes at a time after u secure 224 credits u can get the CMM & PC.

Your smartphone knows more about you than any other device, and it can so easily get into the wrong hands.

If a stranger got hold of your smartphone, it would take just a few minutes to get to know you intimately. Your apps, messages, address book, calendar, browser history and photos tell a story about what you do for a living, who your best friends are, where you have been and what you like to do.

What can you do to shield yourself from snoops who gain possession of your phone? Fortunately there are some simple settings and apps to protect your smartphone so that if it is lost or stolen, it will be harder to peek into your life. Here are some basic tips.

Protect the lock screen :

One of the easiest ways to add a layer of security to your smartphone is requiring a password to get past the initial lock screen. For iPhones, you can turn on a setting to require entering a four-digit passcode to use the device. For Android phones, you can set up a passcode or a secret gesture that you draw with your finger to unlock the screen. There is also a setting to make the phone erase all your data if a person enters the passcode incorrectly after a certain number of times.

It can be annoying to have to enter a passcode every time you turn on the phone, but one way to make this less cumbersome is to set an amount of time the phone has to wait until it requires entering a passcode again. For example, on the iPhone you can set it to require a passcode 15 minutes after the last time you entered it.

Use apps for lost phones :

If your phone is stolen or lost, apps can track its location. If the device is turned on, you can ping the device for a signal to show its approximate location on a map.

For the iPhone, Apple offers a free tool called Find My iPhone, which can be turned on in the settings for iCloud; users can log in to iCloud.com from any browser to view the phone's location on a map. For Android phones, the free apps Lookout and Where's My Droid will help locate a missing smartphone. The Lookout app can even secretly snap a photo of a thief's face with the front-facing camera and send an email to you with the picture and the location where it was taken.
That is not to say that if your phone is stolen, you should hunt for the thief. But police officers have sometimes used the feature to track the stolen phone and catch the thieves.

Both Lookout and Find My iPhone also have a feature to remotely erase all the data from the phone just by clicking a button. This way, the instant you lose your device, you can at least prevent a stranger from looking at your pictures and emails.

Look out for malware :

Apple carefully polices its App Store so malicious software generally does not make it onto iPhones. But the more open nature of Android software makes it susceptible to malware that can steal a user's personal information; Lookout, the mobile security firm, estimates that from the beginning of 2012 to the end of 2013, 18 million Android users may encounter malware. The Lookout app for Android also scans and removes malware.

The most prominent type of malware is called toll fraud. Basically, a malicious piece of software secretly sends messages from your device to a service that authorises charges to your phone bill. Owners of Android phones should occasionally check their phone bills for any mysterious charges.

Minimise location sharing :

A lot of apps on a smartphone track your location. In the settings for both iPhones and Android phones, you can choose which apps gain access to location data, or turn off location services altogether. It is generally wise to allow only apps that make good use of location data, like GPS software, to track where you are. But you probably don't want to allow the app made by IMDB, the movie database, to know your location if all you do is look up movies and actors with it.
On some smartphones, your location is pulled whenever you snap a photo. This feature, called geotagging, is aimed at helping organize photo albums. But if you are sensitive about people knowing where you have been, make sure to turn location tracking off inside the camera settings.

Encrypt your data :

Even if you require a password to use your smartphone, a thief can theoretically plug the device into a computer and hack around to take a look at your data. Security researchers recommend using encryption to secure your information.

iPhone owners are in luck: Apple's newer iPhones have encryption included in both the software and the hardware, making it virtually impossible for any stranger to obtain the data as long as the lock screen is protected by a passcode. Some Android phones have a software-based encryption feature – the popular Samsung Galaxy S III, for example, has an option to require entering a password to decrypt data on the device and its memory card whenever the phone is booted up. Be warned, however, that the Galaxy's encryption process is irreversible, so if you are the type who finds entering a password annoying, don't use it.

There are also various third-party apps that allow you to encrypt specific types of information. Good Technology, for example, offers iPhone and Android software for businesses to manage sensitive data, like classified documents and emails, inside an encrypted container. Hey, mobile phone. Happy fortieth birthday (or are we celebrating 39 again?).

We remember the day you were born, April 3, 1973, like it was yesterday. Your father, Martin Cooper, was at Motorola and we were all, "It's time!" and he called up a friend to say, you, "a 'real' cellular telephone" was here — we think you might have had an evil twin.

You have a helluva figure now, but you weren't always that way. You started out with a boxy frame that barely fit in anyone's hands, though those Saved by the Bell kids sure looked cool using you. Remember when you had that antenna in the '80s? We are so glad you slimmed that down, we were worried it was going to be permanent.

Over the years, we've watched you get smarter, too. When you first came out, we thought all you'd be able to do was make phone calls. But quickly you learned how to handle our emails, let us send text messages to our friends, and in 2007, when you graduated to a "smartphone," you became a staple in our lives we simply couldn't live without.

So, here's to you, cell phone. You've come so far (and had some really great face-lifts) and become a huge part of our lives.

And when those younger folk like Google Glass come in, don't feel too threatened. Sure, they might be the younger, sleeker models, but no one will forget how great you are. You know. When you're dead.

Spamhaus Internet attacks Why network security needs strengthening

The Spamhaus attack may become a milestone after which major service providers may be encouraged (or mandated, by governments, and Internet oversight bodies) to implement BCP38 recommendations, and also overall strengthen their networks.

It's been a few days since the worst denial-of-service attack in the internet's three-decade history. A 300-gigabit-per-second torrent of traffic flooded the networks of Spamhaus, (which is a spam-prevention service based in Europe)and the Internet's major switches in London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. It was like a million cars trying to get on to Mumbai's Sealink at the same time. Some called it the attack that "almost broke the Internet".

Can the Internet really be brought down by a single group of individuals? Is it that fragile? The short answer to the question is: Yes and No.

Let's start with the No. The Internet evolved from a network designed to be robust enough to survive multiple nuclear strikes. The Internet adapts to attacks and outages, reroutes traffic, and survives just about anything you throw at it. Fact.

Yet much has changed from that early vision of that robust, adaptive network. In the early Internet, most traffic was text, and it wasn't sensitive to "latency" - small delays. It didn't matter if that text was delayed a few moments or even minutes.

Now, a huge chunk of traffic on the Internet is video and audio. A lot of the audio, and some of the video, is in real time. If you're on a phone call with someone in another country, the call is probably being routed over the Internet, and you need a guarantee of "zero latency" - no delays.

And then there's a range of critical services on the Internet. Take financial transactions, including stock trades.

Automated systems respond in microseconds to bids or market changes. Many traders like to be physically closer to stock exchanges, because they value that one microsecond edge that gives them. Delay a company's financial transactions by a few seconds, or minutes, and you're talking about a hit of millions of dollars on your target company.

So, while it is very, very difficult to "break the Internet", for many of the services running on it today, even slowing it down is life threatening. (Difficult, but not impossible. There are a few physical weak links, mainly around the undersea cables. The interception and arrest of divers trying to cut a critical cable near Egypt suggests a well-funded operation.)

So how did the perpetrators slow down the Internet so severely?

They used a DDoS or "distributed denial of service" attack. They flooded their target organisation's servers with so much traffic that they slowed down to a crawl.

That's like flooding an organisation with so many junk-mail letters that it can't sort out the real mail. In the process, the "collateral damage" includes the post offices along the way, which slow down badly - affecting every organisation those post offices service.

How do you prevent such an attack?

Through a two-pronged approach. One is to trace out the sources and shut them down. To make this difficult, attackers use third-party servers as staging platforms, and further "spoof" Internet addresses to make them difficult to trace and shut down in real time. Cybercrime forces do have means to trace such traffic, but it's complicated by the lack of real-time collaboration between the cyber-forces of different countries.

The second is the better way out: redesign parts of the Internet to be more robust so that it can ignore or adapt to such an attack.

After a major DDoS attack in 2000 which crippled servers run by Amazon, Yahoo and others, the Internet Society, which includes engineers who invented the Internet, published a "best current practice" (BCP) paper called BCP38, which described ways to beat many types of DDoS attacks.

Unfortunately, these best practices were not implemented by service providers, because they needed individual investment for the greater common good - the security of the Internet. Sort of like people won't spend money on green homes to save the environment, unless there's a law demanding they do it.

The Spamhaus attack may become a milestone after which major service providers may be encouraged (or mandated, by governments, and Internet oversight bodies) to implement BCP38 recommendations, and also overall strengthen their networks by adding additional paths, reducing single points of failure. Spamhaus 2013 may, therefore, have been a good thing for the future of the Internet.

A reader asks Rick Maybury why he can't find virus protection for his Windows Phone

I recently purchased my first smartphone, a Nokia Lumia running Windows Phone. I've been looking for an app or software for virus protection but haven't found anything suitable? There seems to be a lack of smartphone security apps, why is this? With increasing use of mobiles for all sorts of uses I'd have thought this feature would be a priority?

Your vigilance is commendable but as yet there hasn't been any real threats to Windows smartphones. They are still relatively new with a tiny market share, which makes them much less of a target for viruses and malware. Like the iPhone, Windows Phone is protected by a 'walled garden' App Store with a tight screening process designed to weed out apps carrying a malicious payload. That is not to say that something won't slip through the net and security loopholes will be uncovered in the future but for the moment the biggest threat to Windows Phone users is fake alerts and scams that scare you into thinking that your phone is infected and trick you into parting with your credit card details for useless, and usually non-existent anti virus software.

Tracking the rumor that just won't die: The Facebook phone

Facebook executives love to do verbal tap dances around the idea of a phone. It's been going on for years: reports, denials, reports, denials. And now, just two months after a categorical denial from CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself, it seems that at its event next week, Facebook may well go ahead and release what arguably amounts to a Facebook phone.

OK, it's not really a Facebook phone that Facebook watchers are expecting. But this time, it's undeniably something phone related. The social network on Thursday sent out media invitations to "Come See Our New Home on Android." And so the speculation has begun anew.

So what will we see? Probably something far more practical than an actual Facebook phone, at least the kind Zuckerberg has so often denied. Facebook will likely announce a way for handset makers, starting with HTC, to tweak the Android operating system to make the social network a deeper part of the experience. Think Facebook integration to the core, with the social network's collection of apps -- Camera, Poke, Messenger -- featured front and center. At the very least, we should get iOS-like Android integration features for logging in once, syncing contacts, sharing seamlessly, and so on.

This device-to-be has been a long time coming, whatever it turns how to be, and it's made for lots of juicy speculation. Which is why we put together this timeline of reports, rumors, and denials surrounding the mythical Facebook phone.
September 19, 2010: The Facebook Phone is born. Michael Arrington reports for TechCrunch that the social network is working on a top secret project to build software that powers a smartphone. The same day, Facebook says: no way, Jose (or Michael, rather). "Building phones is just not what we do."

November 3, 2010: Zuckerberg officially bursts the phone bubble -- but just the hardware part. He leaves the door open for a software play. "First of all, we're not a hardware company," he says. "Second of all, our goal is not to sell anything physical; our goal is to make it so that everything can be social."

January 26, 2011: A partner surfaces. Rumor has it that HTC is making two Facebook-branded smartphones.

February 15, 2011: HTC unveils the ChaCha and Salsa, both have Facebook buttons for easy access to the social network. So this is the "Facebook phone"? What a letdown. A few months later, ChaCha rebrands as the HTC Status in the U.S. But where, oh where, is Update?

November 21, 2011: Forget that stupid Facebook button, a real phone, made by HTC, running a Facebook-modified version of Android, is 12 to 18 phones away from hitting the market, AllThingsD's Liz Gannes and Ina Fried report. The project is code-named Buffy, after the sexy vampire slayer.

April 25, 2012: Buffy lives, despite reports to the contrary.

May 27, 2012: The New York Times says Facebook is recruiting heavily from Apple and stocking up on hardware engineers to prepare for the release of its own smartphone in the next year.

July 25, 2012: What do you know? HTC's name comes up again, but this time Facebook and the handset manufacturer are said to be targeting a mid-2013 release for a phone.

July 26, 2012: Phone? What Phone? There's no phone, Zuckerberg insists, because it wouldn't make any sense.

September 11, 2012: Zuckerberg sucks the life out of the phone rumors -- again. This phone stuff is all a bunch of nonsense.

November 2, 2012: Not so fast! More HTC-Facebook-Android rumors surface. This time, though, Pocket-lint says the "official" device has a code name of Opera UL.

January 12, 2013: MG Siegler is the boy who cried wolf. He reports that some type of Facebook Phone will be on display at a January 15 press event. Instead, Facebook announces Graph Search.

January 30, 2013: Zuckerberg is adamant: Facebook is not building a phone. But when Zuck closes a door, he opens a window. "Rather than just building an app that's a version of the functionality that you have today, I think making it so that we can...go deeper and deeper...is going to be a big focus for us." OK dude, I think we get it now. You're starting to sound like a broken record.

March 8, 2013: Wait. Never mind. Meet the real "Facebook phone": The HTC Myst, Unwired View tells us, while also leaking the device's specs. The Myst-erious smartphone is apparently getting pre-installed Facebook apps. Sounds so much cooler than a button. Or does it?

March 28 and 29, 2013: Facebook says, "Come See Our New Home on Android," and a variety of reports pop up. The New York Times says the social network will show off an HTC phone running a version of Android tweaked to make Facebook's camera and messaging apps core to the experience. The Wall Street Journal reports that the software in question can run on other handsets and that Facebook is talking with other device makers.

Some excellent RSS alternatives to Google Reader

On July 1, Google will kill off (or retire, as the company puts it) Google Reader — officially because of declining usage, but also perhaps for privacy issues, according to various reports.

Whatever the reason, there are plenty of RSS-reader alternatives that make it easier to read the content you care about.

A quick refresher course on RSS feeds
For many PC users, RSS is an essential tool for consolidating daily news stories. For many others, it's something they've heard about but don't really understand. There's even some confusion about the name.

RSS is short for Rich Site Summary, though it's often also referred to as Really Simple Syndication (Wikipedia info). It's essentially a format for feeding new digital content — typically, frequently updated content such as blogs and breaking news — to subscribers. Most RSS feeds are updated automatically by a provider's publishing system and automatically aggregated by a subscriber's RSS-reader application. Manually edited RSS feeds do exist; they're typically updated in tandem with content releases.

Once set up, RSS gives subscribers access to their favorite blogs, news sites, podcasts, video feeds, and virtually any other constantly updated Web presence — all with minimal effort required by the user. RSS aggregation apps such as Feedly, NewsBlur, and Pulse pull these feeds into one page where users can quickly sort and scan the most recent updates. Imagine browsing the latest CNN stories, The Wall Street Journal articles, and your favorite blogs — all on the same page.

RSS lets publishers distribute as little or as much content as they'd like. Typically, they format feeds to keep readers informed of what's new on the publishers' primary sites. One publisher might send just a paragraph of information along with a link to the full article posted on the Web; another might opt to feed its entire content through RSS. Readers need do nothing more than subscribe to the feed to view all content locally.

Using RSS has both upsides and downsides for publishers. Distributing RSS feeds typically uses less bandwidth than downloading website pages. On the other hand, many RSS aggregators strip ads from feeds, making it harder for publishers to monetize the content.

RSS is the platform on which podcasting was born. iTunes and many other podcasting platforms are basically RSS readers equipped specifically to manage feeds linked directly to audio and video content. The user's multimedia "reader" automatically receives audio/video content, making it immediately available to the subscriber — just grab your morning coffee and start listening to today's podcast. The content is stored locally, so you can take it on the road and listen when there's no Internet connection.

Three popular alternatives to Google Reader
The end of Google Reader was announced in the March 13 Google Official Blog post, "A second spring of cleaning." (That same post listed numerous other Google apps the company deemed obsolete.) In a related post, Google software engineer Alan Green cited two reasons for ending Reader: "[U]sage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we're pouring all of our energy into fewer products." Reader users have been moving to alternatives that promise a richer visual experience.

Pulse (site) is one example of these enhanced RSS readers. It lets you manage news feeds in a way that's as visually stunning as it is simple. A Web-based aggregator, it displays feeds as tiled images (see Figure 1). Windows 8 fans might find Pulse one of the easiest transitions they can make.

Using complex algorithms, Pulse tries to determine which stories in your feeds will be most interesting to you. It acts somewhat like a personalized news page, complete with the stunning visuals you expect from a modern news site. Pulse is available as an app for iOS and Android. No Windows Phone app has yet been announced, but Pulse is being heavily promoted with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10.

Pulse is free for both publishers and subscribers. The site is partially ad-supported and also has premium content offered through paid subscriptions.

Feedly (site) is another Web- and mobile app–based RSS reader that boasts the same visually rich user experience as Pulse. It's grown in popularity since the announcement of Google Reader's end.

Feedly is a bit more customizable than Pulse. Users can display articles in various views such as Titles, Magazine, Mosaic, and Cards, plus a straightforward view of full articles that resembles the look of a traditional newspaper (see Figure 2). It also gives you a robust directory of available RSS sites to fit a variety of tastes and interests.

NewsBlur (site) is another popular solution. In addition to simple news aggregation and a straightforward user interface (see Figure 3), it has a training feature: it can learn what stories its users prefer to see — or not see — in their feeds from various sites. That can be a powerful, time-saving tool, especially if you find yourself spending more time searching for interesting stories than reading them.

Adding RSS feeds from within your browser
Internet Explorer has included built-in support for RSS feeds since IE 7. It offers automatic detection and subscription to feeds via a small RSS icon in the toolbar (near the Home button; the icon turns from gray to orange when a site has an RSS feed available). You can also manually manage feeds via the IE Tools menu. A Windows 7 Support page gives some information about setting up feeds in IE 9.

RSS feeds can be added to Firefox and Chrome via add-ons or plugins.

Whether you're a casual user hoping to cut down on time spent hopping from site to site in search of the stories you care about, or you're an avid newshound looking for the latest stories from sources you trust, RSS feeds can make successful searching considerably easier. You get immediate access to your favorite sites through a single, unified user interface. It puts you in control of your Web-browsing experience.

Automate your online communications with IFTTT
Whereas RSS is a push information-distribution service, IFTTT is like a point-to-point distribution service. It acts as a virtual switchboard, connecting your various online services together.

IFTTT (site) is short for if this (a trigger) then that (an action). You use IFTTT to automate a number of different processes online. From backing up your Instagram photos to synching Evernote to tweeting your latest blog post, IFTTT is sort of a one-stop-shop for getting things from Point A to Point B — without your having to do it manually.

Used by individuals and businesses, IFTTT automates routine processes such as spreading the word about a new blog post via Twitter and Facebook or moving files from one online service to another. The service offers recipes (site) to make setting up these tasks faster.

For example, using a custom recipe (page), avid sports fans can pull from ESPN the final scores of each game played by their favorite team(s) and have them saved in a Google Drive spreadsheet. The setup is surprisingly simple.

Keep in mind that IFTTT is a cause-and-effect–driven service. When creating a recipe, you link a trigger to an action; whenever a trigger's conditions are met, IFTTT carrys out the related action. You should consider all possible causes and effects when creating recipes.

IFTTT's recipes aren't restricted to online services. You can have the service send you an SMS each time a specific event occurs. Events can include anything from a new post on your favorite blog to an alert letting you know when rain is predicted in the local forecast (see Figure 4).

Why IFTTT might not be for you: Automating certain processes within your personal or organizational realm can be a timesaver. But IFTTT is far from perfect. If you're planning to use IFTTT for social-media posting, you might find that social networks such as Facebook have a tendency to lump third-party application posts together and bury them under posts made by means of the native client.

It's also difficult to personalize your postings. You can, for example, add a custom line of text to describe a link to your content — but you can't write a teaser for the content to put it into context.

IFTTT also keeps some control of tasks out of your hands. You can sign in and suspend and/or remove any running recipe. But you have very little control over what precisely triggers a task. This limitation could result in a rogue RSS feed or hacked Twitter account feeding your other services something you'd rather not have shared. In other words, it's difficult to be selective about what posts on your behalf.

A few useful IFTTT recipes: IFTTT links to more than 60 services and channels such as Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, Tumblr, SMS, RSS, and Google Calendar.

A multi-display setup is a great work setup because it helps you multitask, but at the same time it can be extremely distracting when you are surrounded by ten different open apps.

Researchers from the University of St. Andrews say that they have developed a multi-monitor system, called Diff Displays, that keeps track of where you are looking. The idea behind the system is to help you save energy and reduce distractions by dimming the unused screens.

Diff Display uses cameras mounted on the multiple monitors to detect which display you are actual looking at, while dimming the other screens to save energy. While you look away, the system will also highlight any changes that might have occurred on the displays you weren't looking at.

So, say you have spreadsheet open on one monitor and Twitter open on another. While you are working on your spreadsheet, the system will dim the Twitter display, visually freeze it from updating, and display any changes that happen while you were looking away as bright pixels.

We've already seen a number of eye-tracking solutions used in gaming and in smartphones, but Diff Displays could be one of the most useful applications we have seen yet. The team behind Diff Displays has put the program up as a free download for Windows that you can try for yourself.

India makes an average of 13 requests per day to Google for personal web details

In signs of growing Internet snooping by the enforcement authorities, India made an average of 13 requests a day to Google for access to personal web details of web users during 2012.

In terms of the number of requests for web user details during 2012, India is next to only the US, which made 45 requests a day on an average -- the highest for any country.

The US made a total of 16,407 such requests to Google during 2012, followed by India's 4,750, France's 3,239, Germany's 3,083, UK's 2,883 and Brazil's 2,777 in top-five.

The number of requests from all these countries rose in 2012, while the worldwide total also rose by 20 per cent in 2012 to 42,327, as per Google's latest Transparency Report.

The number of such requests from India also rose by about 20 per cent in 2012 from 3,946 in the previous year.

On its part, the US-based global Internet giant Google provided part or full information to the enforcement agencies from India for about two-third of the total requests received by it during 2012. The compliance rate was much higher at 88 per cent for requests received from the US.

Google publishes data for requests about user details, as also for removal of content on its various platforms, including Search, Images and YouTube, on a six-month basis.

Google received 2,319 user data requests from India during the first half of 2012, while the numbers rose to 2,431 in the second half of the year. The number of user accounts associated with such requests rose from 3,467 in the first half to 4,106 in the last six months of 2012.

The company said it regularly receives requests from governments and courts around the world to hand over user data and the number of such requests have increased with growing usage of its services every year.

Regarding the requests for removal of content, Google said that such requests are also received regularly by it from government agencies and courts around the world.

"Governments ask companies to remove content for many different reasons. For example, some content removals are requested due to allegations of defamation, while others are due to allegations that the content violates local laws prohibiting hate speech or adult content," it said.

In respect of content removal requests from India, Google said: "In response to a court order, we removed 360 search results (during first half of 2012). The search results linked to 360 web pages that contained adult videos that allegedly violated an individual's personal privacy."

As per the latest available data, Google received requests from India for removal of 487 items through court orders during January-June 2012, while another 109 items were requested to be removed through police or executive orders.

Beware! Personalised mails can be a scam

BANGALORE: Cyber fraudsters now land up in your inbox as advocates, police officials and friends through emails laced with links to malicious software that can steal your credit cards and bank accounts details.

One of the most successful on-going email scams is the job offer letter claiming to be from the office of the Vasant Kunj, Delhi-based human resources executive at carmaker Maruti Udyog announcing selection to the final round interview. Another one claims to be from a senior advocate based in New Delhi and talks about a case that has been registered against you in a local court.

"These emails are no longer sent by bored teenagers from college basements; most of the scams are pretty well-researched and advanced," said Huzefa Motiwala, regional head at computer security software firm Symantec. "Rise in email scams is directly proportional to the increase in internet penetration in the country, especially with the number of first-time internet users going up each day."

A recent Cisco study found that India is the world's largest source of internet spam, followed by the US, South Korea and China. With over 130 million users, India's internet population is one of the fastest growing in the world, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India.

According to Ravindra K Gadadi, deputy superintendent of Police at Karnataka police's cyber crime division, hundreds of email scam cases get registered with his department every week. "Until recently, most of these scams originated from Nigeria, making it extremely hard for police to find the actual culprits. But that has changed." He added that the cyber police team in Bangalore recently arrested a person from Andhra Pradesh who was behind an email scam campaign.

In another scam, "e-challan" of 500 for parking illegally, claiming to be from police department, were sent via email. The email offers several links for paying the fine by credit card, internet banking or even physically into an SBI account (No: 30119276964). "The hunt is on for a person based out of Bellari (in Karnataka) who is suspected to be part of a large internet scam," Gadadi added.
