Royal Couple to Support Animals on Wedding Day

via Care2.com - The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is one of the charities Prince William and Kate Middleton have chosen to benefit from their royal wedding on April 29. The royal couple asked guests and anyone who might consider giving them a wedding gift to instead make a donation to their gift fund which includes 26 charities they have hand-selected.

ZSL was selected because of their work to save critically endangered black rhinos in Kenya and their efforts in Thailand to help wild elephants whose land is being encroached by humans. With only 3,500 wild elephants left in the country, ZSL works closely with the Elephant Conservation Network to reduce conflicts between villagers and the animals.

Donations from the royal wedding will also benefit the Sumatran tiger, Indian tiger and Amur tiger that are all being driven to extinction. It is estimated that there are no more than 4,000 tigers living in the wild. ZSL tries to protect these magnificent animals in their work with the Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh in a joint program called the Sundarbans Tiger Project. The project watches over the tiger colonies and keeps poachers at bay.

Mass Slaughter of 100 Sled Dogs

A dog-sled company in Whistler, BC ordered the killing of 100 dogs in April 2010, when bookings for adventure tourism slumped after the Olympic Games. Vancouver radio station CKNW obtained documents revealing that 100 healthy sled dogs were killed in a mass slaughter at Outdoor Adventures Whistler last April 21 and 23.

Mary Moriarty, head of cruelty investigations at the BC SPCA, says they are launching an investigation. She says there appear to have been breaches of the animal cruelty act in the cull and criminal charges are a possibility.

Take a walk down Santee Alley in the garment district of downtown Los Angeles, and you will see horrors of the seemingly innocent animal trade. UNWEANED baby bunnies are being sold as pets. These babies are only 10 - 14 days old, and they should stay with their mothers a minimum of 8 weeks! They can only survive on milk; yet they are fed a diet of lettuce and carrots, which gives them diarrhea and causes a slow and painful death.

Since 2008, Bunny World Foundation has been in the trenches fighting against this problem. Not only have they brought the attention of authorities to this illegal and cruel activity, but they also help rescue these bunnies so they are not sent to a certain death through LA Animal Control. Once rescued, BWF de-worms them, de-fleas them, gives them medicine, and weans them for two months until they are strong enough to live on hay, veggies and pellets. Since its inception, BWF has rescued over 1000 baby bunnies and found more than 650 homes.

Bunny World Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 no-kill animal welfare organization. The mission of BWF is to rescue neglected and abandoned domestic baby rabbits, provide them with medical care, and find permanent homes for them. They also wish to educate the public about proper rabbit care, help reduce rabbit overpopulation and abandonment, and eradicate the illegal sales of underage baby bunnies in Santee Alley and other parts of Los Angeles.

Bags for Buns

Congrats to the folks at Bunspace on another successful Bags for Buns Fundraiser. Over the last two years they have delivered bags to rabbits in the SF Bay Area. This year they extended the event to 17 shelters and rescues all over the US and Canada! The Bunspace admin family and some wonderful friends recently joined together to make special bags filled with toys and treats. A few weeks before Christmas those bags will be sent to the shelters to surprise their rabbits. Last year Bunspace members raised 828 bags - this year they raised a total of 1074 bags! Plus $1 of each donated bag will go to the HRS Emergency Rescue Fund. Click here to see some happy bunny faces.

Free Tony The Tiger

This week's Be the Change for Animals cause is Free Tony the Tiger. Tony is a 10 year-old tiger who lives at a truck stop in Gross Tete, LA. He is kept in a chain link and concrete cell surrounded by idling truck engines and diesel fumes. He can never escape the noise, the lights, or the boredom as he paces back and forth. Sight-seers continually crowd around his cage flashing lights in his face from cameras. There are even signs posted asking people not to throw things at him. It is a miserable existence for a magnificent animal - living alone with no enrichment or animals of his kind. Big Cat Rescue of Tampa, FL has offered Tony sanctuary, but his owner refuses.

In December 2010, the permit allowing Tony's owner to continue his exploitation is up for renewal. You can help free Tony by doing the following: 1) Send a letter to Louisiana representatives asking them deny this renewal and put an end to the private trade of tigers. 2) Sign the Change.org petition calling for the denial of the permit. 3) Share this story with your friends and followers and ask them to act too. Help free Tony so he can live his remaining years 5-10 years in the peaceful environment he so deserves!

Summer at the Lake with Petie

The anipal community has gone through some rough times lately with several friends going to the Rainbow Bridge, so I thought it would be nice to recognize the power of love and friendship within this very special group. Our friend Pumpkin Puddy has put together a book called Summer at the Lake with Petie. It describes how the anipals gathered together to help our pal, Petie The Cat through a very tough summer.

This book is about fun, friendship, laughter, antics, and the healing power of love. The anipal twitterverse may seem odd to those who don't participate, but those who are involved have felt the power of being part of a community of like-minded souls. When one of our own is sick or in trouble, we rally round to provide love, emotional support, and sometimes even financial support. The pictures and writings in this book reflect that love and support.

This book is special not just because it's about our love for Petie and the miracles that love can work. The proceeds of the book benefit Duncan's Place, a cat sanctuary in Loveland, CO. It's a wonderful group of people who foster cats in their homes, help them find forever homes, and help families down on their luck keep their pets with them.

Bully Breed Rescue

This week's Be the Change for Animals cause is Bully Breed Rescue in New Canaan, CT. Of an estimated 3 million pit bulls in the US, approximately 1 million are killed each year! Only a handful of pit bulls are adopted from animal care and control facilities, many of which automatically destroy them due to breed specific legislation or internal non-adoption policies.

For the last ten years, the number of pit bulls entering the shelter system has increased. A survey taken in 2000 by ASPCA reported more than 20% of their population was pit bull or pit bull mix. The national average today is estimated to be 33%.

Did you know that the Humane Society of the United States has named November 7-13 as National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week to honor animal shelters and their dedicated staff across the country? There are approximately 4,000 animal shelters across the US that serve an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals each year. Wabbit Wednesday - Meet Parker

Dis is Parker, one of da many adoptable bunnies at Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. Parker is an 8-month-old Jersey Wooly bunny who is spayed, microchipped, and has received all of her shots. She is a shy bunny, but once she is used to you, she will become your best friend. Like many bunnies, she doesn't really like to be carried, but she is quite da cuddle bunny. She would love to sit with you while you read a book or watch TV. Her favorite snacks are carrots, celery, and parsley. And she loves to play, so don’t be shy about providing her with toys. Dat's where da Santa Paws Drive comes in - der goal is to make sure dat shelter animals get some of da love, attention and gifts dat other pets are lucky enough to receive. And dey are currently accepting nominations for shelters to be Santa Paws Drive recipients. Six shelters around da world will be selected to receive cash, toys and treats delivered to dem by Christmas!
