<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=widgetsamazon-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B003DNL9YM&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

I'm not crazy about cranberry sauce in the first place. Cranberries are very tart and sour. That's why they're combined with sugars and corn syrups, binders, and preservatives before being molded into the shape of a can.

Rather than eating what the cranberry cannery is serving up, I choose to make my own cranberry sauce with ingredients that I like. Apples will add a natural sweetness to the tart cranberries while contributing a special flavor to the otherwise one-dimensional side dish.

After peeling 3 Granny Smith Apples and cutting them into cubes, I add a 6 ounce bag of fresh cranberries, and a ½ cup of dried cranberries to a stove-top sauce pan. Under direct heat, the cranberries and apples will release moisture, making a chunky fruit compote.

Perhaps you like your apple cranberry sauce very chunky. That's fine, you can leave it as is. For me, I prefer a smoother side dish, so the heated fruit is added to my food processor. After a few pulses, I have the texture and consistency I'm looking for.

All I have to do now is adjust seasonings. Keeping with the holiday flavor profile, I like cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice in my new creation.

It's just that simple to avoid canned cran this holiday season. If you can peel and cut an apple, open a bag of cranberries, and heat the items together until soft, you can create an apple cranberry sauce that will beat the carved turkey to the center of the table.
If you have family members willing to brink desserts, or their favorite dish, it helps too, because you can focus on things like decor, expanding the eating area, if you have large gatherings, and making sure everything is perfect for your guests.

If Turkey and stuffing (or 'dressing' in the south, where it is made with cornbread instead of other bread) are on the menu, try this simple suggestion: Rather than cooking the stuffing inside your bird, boil and bone a chicken the day before, bake cornbread (or get the bread ready that you intend to use) completely prepare the stuffing according to the recipe you like best, and put it in the refrigerator in a baking pan, ready to pop into the oven the next morning.

If you find turkey dry, or bland, simply take 10 chicken bullion cubes, a diced onion, minced garlic cloves, 2 Tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 Tablespoons of seasoned meat tenderizer, red pepper to taste, and two quarts of water. Cook until only one quart remains. Strain this cooled liquid through a cheesecloth, or fine wire strainer; use the onions and garlic in your stuffing or mashed potatoes, and buy a meat injector (looks like a giant syringe with a huge needle, and inject the spicy mixture into your thawed turkey.

This can be allowed to marinate overnight, but it actually works best if injected right before cooking the turkey, because it tends to drain out some if left over night. This method works for fried, baked, or smoked turkeys. Prepare all desserts the night before, and things like veggie trays, salads, cranberry sauce can be done the night before as well.

Bake or buy muffins that can be eaten by hand for breakfast, so you don't have to worry about breakfast, or a breakfast mess, and you can even have your table set and decorated the night before.

Be certain to have plenty of relaxing activities, like movies for the post dinner lethargy that we all seem to have after eating Thanksgiving Dinner, but remember to have activities to keep the children entertained as well. They enjoy movies, for relaxing, but will have plenty of energy left.

Marshmallow Straw Contest

This is a new version of apple dunking. Take a large plastic bowl, fill it half way with ice water, and float full size marshmallows in it. Each child has a straw, cut in half. (Shorter straws are easier to suck and hold the marshmallow) Then have a contest to see who can get the marshmallow picked up in the shortest amount of time. Do this with only one or two children at a time so there will not be too many kids trying to catch the marshmallows at once. They can even eat the marshmallow when they capture it.
Pumpkin Bowling

Knock over the bowling pins. Make a strike or a spare. Select several miniature pumpkins for this game. You need extras in case a few split or break. Place plastic soda bottles, with dried beans in the bottom to weight them just a bit, as bowling pins several feet away on the lawn or floor of the room.
You can let the kids decorate the soda bottles with Halloween objects before the game. Measure off several feet. Give each child two tries to knock down the pins. I strike is worth two pieces of candy. A spare is worth one piece of candy.
Yummmm. You could easily consume over 2000 calories in one sitting (without even counting the alcohol calories)!!!

Although turkey is often cited as the culprit in the after-dinner lethargy, is gobbling up all that turkey really to blame?

Well, not exactly. Turkey does contain L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid with a documented sleep inducing effect. When we eat foods that contain L-tryptophan, this amino acid travels in the blood from the digestive system and later enters the brain. The brain then changes the L-tryptophan into serotonin - which calms us down and helps us sleep.

However, L-tryptophan can really only make a person tired right away if it is eaten or taken by itself without any other amino acids. And the protein in turkey contains plenty of other amino acids - and that's not including all the other food on the Thanksgiving table.

It's worth noting that other foods contain close to the same amount of tryptophan than turkey (0.333 grams of tryptophan per 100 gram edible portion), including chicken (0.292 grams per 100 gram edible portion), pork and cheese. As with turkey, other amino acids are present in these foods besides tryptophan, so they don't make you sleepy either.

It's More Than Just Tryptophan

Instead of just turkey being to blame, nutrition experts and scientists believe that one reason you may feel sleepy after your Thanksgiving feast is actually that carbohydrate-rich meal that leads to a much higher serotonin synthesis than does L-tryptophan found in turkey. Think of all those starchy, sugar-containing foods like bread, yams, potatoes, pumpkin pie, etc.

You see, these carbohydrates stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin. When this occurs, some amino acids that compete with tryptophan leave the bloodstream and enter muscle cells. This causes an increase in the relative concentration of tryptophan in the bloodstream. Serotonin is synthesized and you get that sleepy feeling.

And, eating a big Thanksgiving dinner causes increased blood flow to the stomach (needed to help digest the meal) and less blood flow to the brain.

Not only that, but the fats in the Thanksgiving dinner also slow down the digestive system. Fats also take a lot of energy to digest, so the body will need to redirect blood to your digestive system to tackle the job.

And if that isn't enough, add in the alcohol, which is a central nervous system depressant, and a nap is just around the corner!

You've Got That Sleepy Feeling!

When your stomach is full, blood is directed away from your nervous system because it takes such a large amount of energy to digest such a large meal. So what happens next?? You will want to take a nap after any large meal, particularly if it is high in fats and carbohydrates. So, it's really the combination of the type of food, the amount of food, alcohol and the group atmosphere.

A Few Holiday Tips...

So, what can you do to avoid the huge calorie input and the resulting lethargy? It can be a real challenge if you are watching your waistline as well, so the following are some eating tips to still look good and feel good and be healthier after the Thanksgiving dinner without having to deprive yourself....

o Eat at least 1 or 2 small meals earlier in the day: We often eat faster and more when we are hungry - therefore eat a light breakfast and lunch on the day to avoid overeating at dinner time.

o Try a smaller plate: If you want to cut calories, choose smaller bowls and plates. Less food will make its way into your mouth.

o This is not an all-you-can-eat buffet: Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter with lean meat (turkey breast), and the rest with a starch of your choice. Eat slowly and stop when you are full.

o Go skinless: Choose your 4-6 oz. turkey portion skinless to slash away some fat and cholesterol.

o Smaller portions: Along with the smaller plate, go for smaller portions. Sample the different foods in moderation.

o Limit high fat items: High fat food items can be found in fried and creamy dishes as well as cheese-filled casseroles in a traditional Thanksgiving meal. For instance, mashed potatoes are usually made with butter and milk; green bean casseroles are often prepared with cream of mushroom soup (also high in salt), candied yams are loaded with cream, sugar and marshmallows. If you cannot control the ingredients that go into a dish, simply limit yourself to a smaller helping size. Again, moderation is the key.

o Drink plenty of water: alcohol can dehydrate your body as can caffeine if you don't use it regularly. Drink calorie-free water to help fill up your stomach and keep you hydrated.

If you are cooking Thanksgiving dinner:

o Substitute high fat ingredients with lower-fat or fat-free ingredients.

o Leftover Turkey? Instead of turkey sandwiches, use the leftover turkey to make low-sodium soups with lots of fresh, chunky vegetables.

o Experiment with new recipes: try substituting 2 egg whites for 1 whole egg; low fat plain yogurt or low fat sour cream for regular sour cream; skim or 1% milk for whole milk; frozen yogurt for ice cream; light butter for whole-fat butter; and low-fat or fat-free cream of mushroom soup for regular cream of mushroom soup (keep the sodium in check here as well).

Most importantly, enjoy your family and friends and have a Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving!!
Make no bones about it; Christmas is hell if you are a health conscious person who would, for the other 360 days a year, be very careful what they ate and drank. Over the Christmas period it is probable, nay expected, that you will drink too much and certainly eat too much.

Look at Christmas dinner. If you are lucky there's no starter, so it's straight into mountains of turkey (not bad for you at all if you avoid the skin) and stuffing, sausages wrapped in bacon, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots and brussel sprouts plus bread sauce, cranberry sauce and lashings of gravy. No one is allowed just one helping - you have to come back for more. Then there's the Christmas pudding - heavy with fruit and nuts (and fat and sugar) - and brandy butter - that's sugar and butter with a splash of brandy in it to you and I. Then mince pies and nuts and chocolates just to finish you off.

Beer beforehand and wine with the meal, followed by brandy and/or port and then more beer as you settle down in front of the telly to watch the Queen's speech (or Die Another Day on the other channel), whilst the kids slowly dismantle the presents they woke you up at 5.00am for. No wonder you fall asleep after that lot!

Tips for the health conscious - take the turkey (no skin) and the boiled vegetables and avoid the gravy and sauces. But take the wine - it is a celebration after all!

So to make up for this digestive assault, what should you buy for the health conscious friend or relative at Christmas time?

A ticket to Tokyo, where the 25th. of December is a normal working day and they don't really celebrate Christmas. Although they do celebrate the 23rd. of December, which is the current Emperor's birthday. Plus, Japanese food is generally really healthy - fresh meat and fish with crisp vegetables and boiled rice.
How about individual packets of bran, cracked wheat, hazelnuts, raisins, dried cranberries and coconut flakes for them to mix and make their own delicious muesli?
What about some weights for general exercises or for increasing the effects of walking/jogging? Probably best not to buy them for someone who lives far away - they will cost a fortune in postage!
A pedometer to work out how far they have walked in a day. Some pedometers have a conversion to show how many calories have been burnt - 'must have' information for the health conscious friend or relative.
A pull-up or chin-up bar can easily be fitted across a doorway either permanently or removable in seconds and is excellent way of toning up the muscles of the upper and lower arm and increasing upper body strength.
Health conscious friends and relatives would love a spa day - lying there being pampered all day, generally treating their bodies as 'a temple' and having someone to massage their temple for them. Me? I think I'd take the Vineyard experience!
Phil Ward works at Gizoo, a leading UK retailer of fun gifts for Christmas. If you're stuck for healthy Christmas gift ideas, Gizoo offers a great choice of stocking fillers and Secret Santa gifts, plus relaxing Christmas gifts for her and fitness related Christmas gifts for him.
You could think of a stuffing, biscuits cranberry sauce or of course, salad dishes. Let's look at three great salad recipes that should really bring out the taste in your main courses.

Have you ever tried salad dishes as the main course? If that seems a little heretical to you, this lemon-flavored salad should be wonderful playing a supporting role as well. The ingredients you need should be a cup of wild rice, a handful of cracked walnut pieces, five sliced celery stalks, a half cup of fresh chopped parsley and a teaspoon of sage. Cook the wild rice in a saucepan in about a quart of water for 40 minutes. You need to make sure that the rice is properly cooked and kind of split by the end of this period. Finely chop up all the ingredients, toss them together with the wild rice, and season with the vinegar garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. You can put together a fine dressing whisking olive oil and yogurt. This is a salad that understands the pressures of a Thanksgiving dinner. You can prepare and leave it be for several hours. Just make sure that you don't add the parsley in until the last moment. Presley doesn't like it in vinegar.

Up next is a delicious cranberry coleslaw that doesn't take more than a few minutes to throw together. The ingredients you'll be using will be 6 ounces of dried cranberries, a third of a cup of sunflower seeds, a similar quantity of mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, and a pound package of coleslaw mix. Pick up a large bowl, and throw in everything except the sunflower seed kernels, the coleslaw mix and the cranberries. You can add in 2 tablespoons of the vinegar, a half teaspoon of salt, a similar amount of ground pepper and a little bit of sugar too. Stir the coleslaw mix in, and leave it in the refrigerator until it's time. Right before you're ready to serve it though, sift the sunflower kernels and the dried cranberries over it.

Finally, let's end with a fun antipasto salad. Pick up three quarters-of a pound artichokes, chop them up and marinate them. You will need a cup of oil-cured olives, black, green and anything else, a pound of different kinds of cured meat, half a pound of red peppers, a bag of mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette. There really is no preparation to this except for how you arrange everything. Think of the prettiest arrangement you can have with all the brightly colored vegetables and mozzarella; sprinkle a little of the dressing on top, and serve the dressing as a dip.
We are all told (women especially) to drink more Cranberry juice. So what exactly is so special about them and what makes them so beneficial to us? Below is a list of ten reasons we should all be making Cranberries a part of our daily diet.

Cranberries are low in calories, with a 100 gram serving of them containing approximately 46 calories.
Cranberries contain substances called polyphenol antioxidants, or anthopolyphenols. This can possibly have potential anti-ageing properties as well as antioxidant properties.
Why do antioxidants matter? Well, they can help fight the development of certain diseases, symptoms of heart disease and blood pressure problems and ageing conditions.
Raw Cranberries contain a moderate amount of vitamin C, as a 100 gram serving of them contains approximately 16% of our daily Vitamin C requirement. This is good to know as Vitamin C helps our immune system, helps maintain healthy gums and capillaries as well as helping form collagen, which is beneficial to our bodies' tissues, skin and tendons.
A staggering 95% of all Cranberries are processed into products such as sauces, juice drinks and sweetened dried instant snacks. Only 5% are actually sold fresh to the consumer. The problem being they are usually too sharp to be eaten raw as they are both bitter and sour.
Cranberry tannins also have anti-clotting properties as well as an ability to reduce urinary tract infections such as Cystitis.
Unfortunately, the majority of the times, Cranberries are eaten as cranberry sauce, with turkey, usually in Britain at Christmas or during Canada and Americas Thanksgiving dinners!
Cranberry juice is usually sold as pure juice or as a mixture with other juices. It is high in Oxalate. Recent studies have shown that this may help lower the risk of developing kidney stones.
Cranberry juice is free from artificial colourings, as well as being helpful in preventing the growth of bacteria, however it is quite acidic compared to other soft drinks - therefore it could potentially dissolve tooth enamel over a long period of time.
These little red berries also contain various minerals - including calcium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, phosphorus and potassium to name a few. These minerals help us to maintain healthy bones, water balance and metabolism.
Cranberries are so versatile, as they can be used raw, cooked in pies or made into jelly or jam, so it is worth adding them to your daily diet in one form or another.
The parties might not present a great challenge while planning but, they need attention so that you can impress your guests over great food and wine. Firstly, making the surroundings inviting and attractive is key. Everything must have a style of arrangement from chairs to other decorations at the table. Are you anxious for a succulent turkey, seasoned dressing, cranberry sauce, and all of the extras? Well you're not alone, that's for sure! But when I think of Thanksgiving, I also think of all of the great desserts that my grandmother, mother and aunts made holiday after holiday, from the lemon meringue and pumpkin pies, to the great cakes and cookies. If this is your year to prepare dinner for your family and you don't know what to make for dessert then you're in luck because I have provided you with some great Thanksgiving dessert recipe websites to make sure your family will BE quiet enough to hear a pin drop after falling asleep from full stomachs.

Familyfun.go.com

This website is dedicated to families who love to have fun while they cook! You can make great pies and cakes with the kids and enjoy eating them too! Though I don't have children I got excited about this site because I love any project that resembles arts and crafts. And some of their recipes were right up my alley. For example, their handprint pumpkin pie looks fun and easy to make. According to their recipe, you take one of your pie crusts and cut a hand out of the dough, then bake it and place it on top of your pumpkin pie. It looks fun and the kids will probably enjoy seeing their little hand on their dessert. Of course, they still have what you would call the "ordinary" Thanksgiving dessert, including classic apple pie, chocolate cream pie, pecan pie, and classic banana cream pie, but it seems the fun you get to have by preparing these treats with your family will make them extraordinary.

DianasDesserts.com

DianasDesserts.com brings you recipes hailing directly from the recipe book of Diana Woodall. Though the name may not sound familiar to you, her recipes should go down in the history books for originality and quality. For the category of Thanksgiving dessert alone she offers over 50 unique recipes to take home to your family! Some of her mouth-watering recipes include chocolate-pumpkin marble cake, old fashioned festive jelly rolls, autumn pumpkin cheesecake pie, cranberry cheese bars, persimmon latte cotta, and maple crème flan with maple-glazed pears - they all sound delicious. And one fun aspect of her website is that she includes a cute online conversion calculator with each of her recipes to ensure your measurements are precise, as well as a rating scale (1-5) with little cakes as the symbols. Fun stuff!

FoodNetwork.com

This should obviously be one of the first places you look for great recipes - but ironically this was not the first place I thought of. I certainly regretted not looking earlier once I reached this information-rich site filled with incredible recipes and even more incredible pictures. My mouth is still watering at the thought of the great Thanksgiving dessert recipes they offered. Some of these tasty recipes include the ultimate caramel apple pie (yum!), bourbon pecan pie, caramelized pear gingerbread with molasses ice cream, apple crisp, and pumpkin gooey butter cake. They also offer some great healthy alternatives including chocolate, cherry and almond bread pudding, deep-dish apple pie, and glazed chocolate-pumpkin Bundt cake.

Epicurious.com

Epicurious.com offers a great selection of desserts with a French twist. These tasty delicacies come straight from Bon Appétit Magazine, which specializes in great cuisines. The desserts sounded and looked incredible! Want to know what they are? I bet you do! First they offer a tasty bourbon-orange pecan pie with bourbon cream - and did I mention it's made with bourbon? Then they move on to cranberry ribbon apple pie, lattice pie with pears and vanilla brown butter, lemon chiffon pie with glazed cranberries, and ... I can't tell you everything - you have to visit the site to see for yourself!

As the holidays are rapidly approaching, the last thing you should have to think about is the Thanksgiving dessert or side dish you should serve with your big meal. So I hope that I was able to help you with creative ideas to get the ball rolling. That way, once the holiday comes and goes, you'll get to claim the bragging rights for having the best Thanksgiving dessert ever!
A bright sunny day will keep the temperature in the low 70's and a gentle southerly breeze has made me forget that tomorrow will be a day when I'll see a few flakes of snow.

God made this kind of day for us in the midst of winter, so we could get outside, dust the leaves off the old barbeque grill and soak up the sun while smoke from the grill drifts down the street and make all the neighbors envious!

Not being one who questions the Lord's motives for such a wonderful day, I've already raked a path through the leaves to the concrete pad where my smoker/grill proudly stands. Neglected since Thanksgiving when I smoked the yearly turkey, after taking off the black cover that helps prevent rusting, I'll throw out leftover ashes from the last cookout. Not that I'm lazy, but the ashes are still hot when you finish cooking the meat, so I leave them there until the next time I need the smoker.

The barbeque grill is already clean and with just a little dusting and rinsing off, it's ready to use. I always clean the cooking grid immediately after use. If you allow the grease, bits of fat and meat that collect on the cooking surface to remain there until the next cookout, there could be bad stuff growing there that even a hot fire wouldn't kill.

It's also an attractant to dogs and other animals that just can't resist the aroma of freshly cooked meat. Before I learned the importance of having a clean cooking grid on my backyard grill, I would hear something crash in the night and wake up to see my grill turned upside down by some critter with food on its mind.

A few days ago my neighbor Marvin told me that he had read somewhere that smoke from a barbeque fire is dangerous; it could even kill you if you breathe enough! Well, if that's true, then that's the way I want to go!

It is true that fat will burn faster than lean meat. Because of that, it can more easily become scorched and possibly contain carcinogens in the charred areas. That research is inconclusive at this time, so I'm not worried about it. It seems to be another "cranberry scare".

Back in the '70's just before Thanksgiving, some researchers decided that cranberries could give you cancer. Well, even back in the dark ages, the media knew how to milk a story. Within a week of the media blitz condemning the loathsome cranberry, virtually every can of cranberry sauce and bags of cranberries in the country were taken off the shelves of America's grocery stores.

A week after Christmas that year it was discovered that a human would have to eat almost ten box car loads of the stuff before suffering even the possibility of cancer. They were more likely to be hit by a bus coming home with the groceries that having the big C lead them to the grave!

Barbeque smoke can be dangerous if you've soaked the briquettes with something other than lighter fuel to start the fire. If so, you could inhale toxic gases from products such as paint stripper, liquid sandpaper and even Coleman fuel. Then there is gasoline, as my neighbor Marvin will agree, is not a wise choice to light a fire.

Gasoline explodes when introduced to a lighted match! For those who have not experienced the excitement of a gasoline explosion, it doesn't detonate with a bang, but with a Whooooomp! It's pretty scary!

Charcoal lighter ignites with a slow and steady burn, insuring that you're probably not going to burn your house down at the beginning of your cookout. If you're sensible with your cooking, both your home and your pride are still in tact when you take your first bite of delicious barbeque!

It's wonderful to have a beautifully warm and sunny day in the grip of winter. I'm going to make the most of it because the weather guy says that tomorrow will be cold and cloudy with snow flurries.
Let's face it. As the years pass by our oceans and skies are becoming polluted with various contaminants that (if no one takes action soon) will render the Earth less able to sustain life. And there may come a time when no life would exist anymore.

It is fortunate that many nations are now taking further steps in order to save the environment by implementing energy policies that encourage electricity production through renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar energy instead of using fossil fuels. And with these energy policies in place, there is also a huge opportunity to create the much needed "Green" jobs for people, especially those who have been laid off from companies due to the current global economic crisis.

So what are these Green Collar Jobs? Green Collar Jobs are almost the same as white collar and blue collar jobs but the main difference is that people who have Green Collar Jobs help reduce waste and pollution that harm the environment. In fact, blue collar jobs can be turned into green collar jobs provided that what you are making is more or less green. For example, building a jeep is a blue collar job while building a hybrid car is a green collar job.

In the United States, President Barack Obama has launched a campaign towards promoting alternative energy and reducing global warming while at the same time hoping to create millions of new jobs for people in the country.

In fact, Obama, during the start of his administration, released an economic stimulus package that would also support the generation of Green Collar Jobs that would not only help preserve natural resources but also jump-start the economy. In fact, five billion dollars from the stimulus package would be devoted to a low-income "weatherization" program, two billion dollars for electric car research and another five hundred million dollars to prepare and train people to be able to handle Green Collar Jobs.

To further promote his campaign for a greener Earth, the Obama Administration would initiate the country's first program that would allow offshore projects to produce electricity through wind turbines and ocean currents. And the energy that is harnessed from these projects could supply at least twenty percent of the total electricity needs of the United States by 2030. At the same time, this initiative could possibly create at least two hundred and fifty thousand job opportunities for people throughout the country.

Since there is a huge opportunity for many Green Collar Jobs to become available in the near future, schools are now offering training courses to prepare people for such occupations. Those who have been laid off from manufacturing and construction companies, for instance, are now going back to school as they anticipate the increasing demand for environmentally friendly, sustainable, jobs.

One of the schools that offer training for Green Collar Jobs is San Jose City College in Silicon Valley, California where there is a class that teaches how to install solar panels and fix wind turbines. In fact, the instructor has mentioned that due to the popularity of this class, the waiting list has reached more than double.

Family picnics and other special occasions are always fun to have but can get pretty taxing when you're the one preparing for them. For instance, you need to make sure that there is plenty of food that your relatives and friends can munch on while you slave away over the grill.

And let's face it, it's also much easier to call in and order burgers from a quick service restaurant or to have someone cater your burgers if you don't mind paying a fortune for them. However, when it come to hamburgers, nothing beats a great home cooked burger because you can pick the best ingredients for your burgers and put in as much love and care into them as you want. In fact, you can even take any simple hamburger recipe, jazz it up and turn it into a wonderful new recipe that you and your family can enjoy again and again.

Take the simple grilled hamburger for example. Usually you just grill the beef patty, slide it into a bun, add some pickles, onion, catsup and mustard and then eat it. But if you are going to serve hamburgers at your next family reunion, or any other special occasion for that matter, you could alter the recipe in order to infuse it with different, sumptuous, flavors that would make your burgers stand out from the ordinary. Some of your relatives and friends who are at your picnic may even ask you for your recipe.

So with that in mind, if you are planning to serve hamburgers at your next family picnic, then here are three tips on how you can make the best homemade hamburgers ever.

Tip #1: Pack the hamburger patty with your own special seasonings and spices.

For example, you can definitely liven up your hamburgers if you marinade them in soy sauce, Montreal seasoning, red and black pepper, paprika and garlic. This combination of spices and seasonings will definitely make your hamburgers stand out at your picnic as they are packed with flavors that are different from the usual, boring, ready-to-cook hamburger patties available in many supermarkets today or even from the hamburgers that the fast food chains sell. However, it really doesn't matter what seasoning or spices you add to your burger as long as you add something to make them special and "remarkable" meaning your guests will talk about them long after the picnic is over.

Tip #2: Always make sure to use the best ingredients in making hamburgers.

Everyone's taste and preferences are different as one person may like eating your hamburgers while another person may not. But the key rule here is that you must be able to search for the finest ingredients when you make your burgers because if you're able to do so, then half of your work is done. For instance, you could opt to use ground chuck, ground sirloin or even a 50-50 mixture of ground beef and pork for the patties. The choice is up to you, just be sure to use the freshest hamburger meat you can find.

Tip #3: Turn your burgers into a well-balanced meal.

Usually picnic hamburgers are served with trimmings like tomato, lettuce and onion (and I suppose those could be called vegetables if you want to) but you can make sure that your guest are getting a nutritious and healthy hamburger if you add some onions, green peppers or chopped celery right into the meat before grilling. Doing this will give your burgers an extra crunch and at the same time provide your guest with additional fiber and vitamins. In addition, serving homemade salsa with your hamburgers instead of catsup and mustard will add tremendous new flavors to your burgers while also being low on fat and calories. And if you're in need of some fantastic homemade salsa recipes, you may want to visit http://www.homemade-salsa-recipes.com and check out their collection.

So that's it. If you're looking for a cure for the same old boring burgers, follow my three tips above and you'll be sure to have them coming back for more.
Originally Thanksgiving Day was a harvest festival where the early American settlers gathered together to express their gratitude to God, not only for the fall harvest, but for all the other blessings they had received over the previous year thus making this holiday a semi-religious one. For instance, the members of one early American community held a formal mass on Thanksgiving Day in 1541 to express their gratitude for being able to safely cross a portion of the Texas wilderness.

Today in the United States, however, most people relate this holiday to the day in 1621 when the English settlers shared a meal with the Wampanoag tribe that saved the settlers from starving after a brutal winter the prior year in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This first Thanksgiving feast was held in honor of the Native American Indians as a way of expressing the Settlers thanks for teaching them how to hunt and gather food in the new land.

As a result, while Thanksgiving today is becoming more of a secular holiday, people usually still give thanks for whatever good things they have received over the past year by starting their Thanksgiving dinners with a prayer that the host or hostess leads rather than going to a formal religious service first.

So now that you know a little more about the history of Thanksgiving, let's talk about the history of the traditional food that is served - especially the traditional boring Cranberry sauce.

Up to this day there are certain traditional foods that are always served on Thanksgiving such as baked or roasted turkey with a stuffing made of bread and/or vegetables. That's why many people refer to Thanksgiving Day as Turkey Day. Other foods that are served during traditional Thanksgiving dinners are mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, vegetables that are abundant during fall, pumpkin pie and, of course, cranberry sauce that has traditionally been used as an moist accompaniment for the turkey which can sometimes be a dry meat.

So this year, to make your Thanksgiving dinner a little less boring, here is a great homemade salsa recipe that you can easily make yourself with minimal effort. It's really very easy to prepare and it's guaranteed that your family and friends will be delighted with your creative innovation on this new form of Cranberry "sauce."

Cranberry Salsa

Ingredients

1 ½ Cups fresh cranberries
½ Cantaloupe, removed from peel and de-seeded
1/3 Cup jalapeno chili, chopped
4 Tbsp sugar
Zest of a lemon
2 Tbsp coriander, chopped
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp salt

Directions

Combine the cranberries and cantaloupe in a food processor and pulse until they are coarsely shredded. Put the shredded cranberries and cantaloupe in a bowl and add lemon zest, jalapeno chili and sugar. Let the mixture sit for fifteen minutes or until the cranberries soften in the sugar. Then, add coriander, lemon juice and salt and mix them altogether. Refrigerate the mixture for two hours or overnight before serving.

If your serve the recipe above along with some of the traditional canned Cranberry sauce this year, I think it's a safe bet that people will go for your homemade Cranberry Salsa instead and that it will be such a great hit with your family and friends that Cranberry salsa will become a "new tradition" at your family's Thanksgiving dinner table from now on. So go ahead give it a try this year and then let me know what you think by visiting our Homemade Salsa Recipes website.

A good salsa recipe can spice up a meal and add a little life to your next party. And while it's easy to find salsa at any grocery store, it's just not the same as a homemade salsa you make yourself. Making a salsa from scratch is actually quite easy. With the right salsa recipe and just a little preparation time, you can create a good homemade salsa that will have people coming back for more. Mexican food and salsa lover John Weisenberger has put together a delicious collection of tried and true Homemade Salsa Recipes that will get you started. Being a salesman is a very challenging job, especially today when companies are cutting down on every type of expense. For example, budgets at some companies are being slashed on every non-essential item ranging from providing pizza during working lunches to the many companies even discontinuing the availability of free coffee in their break rooms. We'll come back to this thought in a moment.

So let's say, for example, that you happen to sell computers. In today's economy you would most likely have a very hard time convincing your corporate customers to buy their employees new computers from you.

Even if you spend numerous hours delivering your pitch with your customers and sharing with them how your new computers would benefit them, it is highly likely that they will turn a deaf ear on you because of many reasons. First, they may not have the budget to buy your computers. Second, they may already be content with the computer supplier that they currently have. And thirdly, you may have not proven to your customers that you can bring a lot more to the table to help and support them in what they do best.

I remember a time when my friend Therese was an account manager for a Japanese information technology company. She had this one corporate customer who was planning to build a Wide Area Network (WAN) to connect all of its branches to one another. It was a potentially big project so Therese got all of her pre-sales team together and drew up a proposal that she delivered to her customer. The customer liked the proposal a lot, and in the end short-listed three suppliers, including Therese's company. It was all going well for Therese and she was sure she would be able to close the deal. Unfortunately, as so often happens in the end, the parent company of her customer had intervened and chose to remain with its current supplier as the winner.

For a brief period of time, Therese asked herself repeatedly where things went wrong. She thought she had a winning proposal and she really believed that this project would be awarded to her team. In hindsight, Therese realized that perhaps she could have forged a better relationship with her potential customer as well as its parent company. And most importantly, she learned that this was not just about having a winning proposal but it is about winning your customer's trust.

Therese replayed the many meetings that she had before and suddenly realized that although her customers were interested in the products she had to offer, her sales calls were very formal and "to stiff" to build a great personal relationship with any of the meeting participants.

Therese realized that she needed to find a way to make her meetings a little more laid back and what she finally thought of was the idea to bring donuts and other treats with her to all her meetings and to have at least ten minutes of pre-meeting time mingling with her customers while sharing these treats with them in a casual yet happy atmosphere.

In fact, formal research has shown that sharing food with people during a meeting can be used to any sales person's advantage as this allows their customers to get know more about the sales person as an individual. Thus, the sales person should be able to create a better personal relationship with their potential customers.

So armed with her new knowledge of the value of sharing food during a sales meeting Therese carried out her plan for the next big project that she had. Therese brought donuts with her that she shared with her customers and, of course, she had a fun chat with them and even discovered a few new personal things about them. After several client meetings, Therese won over her new customers and closed the deal.

So the moral of my story is, if you also want to be a successful sales person, you need to be able to forge good relationships with your clients and this can even be made by doing something as simple as sharing donuts with them. This simple and inexpensive gesture can surely help you attain your customer's trust, loyalty and appreciation in this time of corporate cutbacks and "foodless" meetings.
This, of course, gives you a pretty good excuse to have even more fun by throwing an awesome party. And what better theme to have for your party than a Mexican fiesta where you can impress your friends with your Mexican cooking skills and techniques. At the same time, a Mexican fiesta theme would definitely be a hit with your friends as the party atmosphere is very laid back and stimulating, filled with brilliant colors.

For your Mexican-themed party, you can decide to serve many kinds of Mexican food and since you and your friends will be in front of the television so you don't miss any of the action and the drama of the game, you need to choose foods that are easy to eat. For example you could serve foods such as tacos, nachos with salsa, burritos and maybe even tamales.

For drinks and dessert, you could definitely serve margaritas and perhaps Mexican wedding cookies. Aside from being finger foods, all of these dishes are very easy to prepare so you won't have to spend too much time for both the cooking and preparation process.

You can also opt to prepare the foods you're going to serve way ahead of time. Perhaps you can do this even a few weeks before the party where you'll then put your creations in the freezer so you can thaw them out just before serving. It's a good idea to this if you have other things you need to prepare before the big game.

Another great way to have fun at a Mexican fiesta party theme is to have a taco bar. Just lay out all the ingredients that you need (like ground beef, lettuce and jalapenos) to make a taco and watch your friends have fun assembling and eating them. If you want to have your Mexican fiesta party in your backyard, grilling would be the best way to go. You can opt for simple grilled recipes such as corn on the cob drizzled with butter, lime juice and cheese to make it much more delicious to eat.

Large onions called knob onions, which are usually found in Mexican markets, can also be grilled with jalapenos and served with carne asada. This is a traditional dish that your friends would definitely enjoy eating at your party. You can also grill meats like chicken and beef and when partnered with salsa, these would surely be a hit with all your friends.

Lastly, to make the foods that you serve at your Mexican fiesta party even better, you can serve homemade salsa dips, which you can easily make at home. These would add a new dimension of flavors to all your foods. In fact, here is a homemade salsa recipe that you can try out and include in your Mexican fiesta party menu today.

California Heat Salsa Recipe

* 10 Large fresh tomatoes chopped
* 6 Jalapenos chopped
* 3 Habenaro's (for flavor) finely chopped
* 1 Large white onion finely chopped
* 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
* 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
* lots of black pepper
* salt to taste

Combine all ingredients and let sit over night.

During the fall, just about every sports fan in the United States anticipates the beginning of the new college football season. So, if you're like me, you tend to spend your Saturday afternoons in front of a television somewhere watching your alma mater (or your other favorite universities) compete against their arch rival schools. And, of course, during this time, you may even be thinking of inviting some of your friends over to you house or apartment to witness these fiercely contested collegiate battles that takes place during each and every week of the season.

Usually, when you have a busy schedule like mine and you want your friends to come over to watch the game with you, you typically won't have time to prepare all the food, let alone go shopping for the all ingredients you'd need. So what can you do to throw a great party yet make your workload much easier?

Well what you could do is just opt for the easy way out - buy ready-made food from a restaurant either by take out or delivery. But the problem with this is that you can never be sure if the food you ordered is fresh and filled with good ingredients. Also, the food you ordered could already be cold and soggy by the time you run to the restaurant and back for take out. You also could encounter a problem if you have your food delivered such as the driver not being able to locate your house or delivering a wrong order. And if this happens, your hungry friends wouldn't be too happy with you to be sure.

So, to do away with all of the disadvantages of eating restaurant-bought food while at the same time, leaving time for you to have fun with your friends, you can simply have a build-a-burger barbeque party. All the ingredients that you would need for this party are easy to buy and you don't have to spend too much time in preparing them. It's also guaranteed that all the food you would serve in this party is made fresh and with good ingredients. On top of all that, you and your friends will have more time to drink and relax while you all keep an eye glued to the big screen.

For your build-a-burger barbeque party there are a ton of great hamburger recipes that you could try but if you and your friends to heat things up while you enjoy the game and each other's company, then a good choice for you is the Jalapenos Burger following the hamburger recipe included below and which can also be found at Best-Hamburger-Recipes-Ever.com. This is surely a great tasting and healthy burger because aside from using lean ground beef, which cuts the fat content of the burger, it makes use of Jalapeno chilies, which gives you a lot of health benefits such as an increase in metabolism that can actually help with weight loss.

SO give this recipe a try as these spicy burgers are delicious, but make sure you have enough to drink on hand!

Jalapenos Burger Recipe

Directions:

Preheat grill, and add vegetable oil to the grill rack.

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, jalapenos, onion, and garlic. Mold into 6 patties, about 1/2" thick.
Grill over medium heat for 8 to 12 minutes, flipping once.

Remember that any burger tastes better with cheese, you're always welcome to add your favorite American, Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Swiss to any burger if desired.

When someone says "thanksgiving dinner," many women cringe. Turkey, mashed potatoes, yams with melted butter and brown sugar, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie...how can anyone lose weight or even maintain under these dangerously delicious conditions?

Here are five specific things you can do at Thanksgiving to minimize damage to your waistline:

1. Before dinner is served, avoid grazing and mindless snacking as you catch up with friends and relatives. Skip nuts, candies and crackers on the table. Only have something if it's very unique (like your aunt's famous artichoke dip) and only eat one serving. Remember, dinner is coming.

2. Drink lots of water. Water will help you feel full and it's your best ally. Think about making water the only beverage you choose. If you must have something hot to drink with dessert, try a cup of tea.

3. Eat whatever you want at dinner in small portions. Don't make mounds of food on your plate. This is not "Mom's All You Can Eat Buffet - Come and Git It!" Instead imagine you're eating at a beautiful French restaurant. Take a slice of turkey with a dollop of gravy. A small scoop of potatoes with cranberry sauce on the side. Eat slowly and savor the delicious meal that has been lovingly prepared.

4. Share your dessert with someone or ask for a small slice. Ten minutes after dessert has been cleared off the table, you won't remember whether you had 10 bites or 20 bites. But your body will!

5. Take a walk after dinner. This is a wonderful family tradition and a great way to burn off a few calories. As you walk with your family members and friends, you have a chance to catch up more intimately than a large dinner table conversation allows.

Remember, Thanksgiving is a time to be cherished. There's nothing to cringe about. Follow these five easy instructions and enjoy the time with your family and friends without the guilt.
It was made up by people who don't want you to know the real truth! Yes, the first man and woman lived in Paradise, and yes, they were kicked out, but not for eating an apple.

True, the original story involves an apple, but the apple didn't have anything to do with anything. Neither did the snake nor the fig leaves Adam and Eve eventually had to wear for clothing. No, this you see was Paradise. And in Paradise, snakes are nice and friendly creatures and clothing was optional in the universe's first nudist colony.

So why were Adam and Eve kicked out of Paradise? We'll it seems we have no one to blame but ourselves.

As the story goes, on the sixth day of creation, God created Man. Later that night, God took a rib from Adam's side and made Woman. When Adam awoke the following morning, he found a beautiful woman, Eve, lying asleep beside him.

Now Man being a man, what do you suppose he had on his mind?

Wrong... it was food! Muffins and Jam actually, but we'll get to that in a moment.

That same morning God spoke to Adam and Eve and told them, "All this Paradise is for you. Help yourself to anything you like. But never, ever, eat the food that's in the box in the middle of the Garden. That particular food will addict you and will give you pleasures of a very sinful nature. The day you eat the food from the box, you can no longer live here."

So one day, a few weeks later, Eve was out gathering berries (to make more Jam for the muffins Adam liked so much) when she heard a sexy male voice behind her.

"Has God told you that it's now OK to eat the food from the box in the middle of the Garden?" the voice asked. Eve turned around to see a stunningly handsome red Gecko staring at her (it was the Devil in disguise)

"God told us we can eat anything we want except for what's in that box" Eve told the muscular, six foot tall, red lizard.

"Oh come now, that's silly! I hardly think one bite would do you any harm," the Devil lied. "God just wants to keep the special food in the box all to Himself and doesn't want to share it with you. That seems kind of selfish to me."

So at the prodding of the seductively insistent Devil Gecko, Eve slowly opened the box, looked at the food inside and thought how tasty it looked. She also thought how wonderful it would be to be eating the food as God. She believed the Devil's lie and ate one of God's Forbidden Donuts!

Eve then felt a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach and in her loins. She fidgeted and wondered what was wrong with her. Suddenly she realized that she was feeling a guilty, yet pleasurable sensation -- she had disobeyed God and knew she'd done something wrong, but it felt oh so good down there!

Eve hurriedly picked a few more donuts from the box and took them back to Adam. They ate the donuts together and sat in orgasmic bliss. But by the next day, a strange change came over Adam and Eve. They became insatiably hungry and just had to have more donuts.

Just then Adam and Eve heard God calling them. Without thinking, they dived into the bushes (which unknown to them were full of Poison Ivy), but God knew where they were. When God asked them if they had eaten from the box of Forbidden Donuts that He had told them not to touch, they blamed each other for their sins (the first argument between a Man and Woman) while covering themselves with Fig leaves to stop the itching from the Poison Ivy.

God was sad that Adam and Eve had disobeyed Him. He told them that they had to leave Paradise, "From now on you'll have to have physical sex to reach orgasm", He said. "You'll need to make your own clothes to wear (no nudity allowed outside of Paradise) and you'll have to find your own food. Nothing will come easily to you and one day, you will die from heart attacks."

So Adam and Eve left Paradise and moved to what eventually became known as New Jersey. There they set up their new home and worked day and night to duplicate the recipe for the Forbidden Donuts God had told them not to eat.

Eventually they discovered the secret ingredient that made God's Forbidden Donuts so sinfully delicious and they vowed to seduce everyone else in the world with them too. Thus the first Devil Donuts were created which are still addicting people to this day (get the recipe here)

So that's the real story of how Man and Woman were created and how we were all excluded from a life in Paradise all because of the Devil and a box of donuts.

PS: God was so pissed that the Devil Gecko made Adam and Eve eat all His donuts that He remade all Geckos only six inches tall and they now all have to eat flies.
Knowing how to make great healthy diet recipes can help you do just that. Simple changes or additions to some of your current meals, like using whole grains instead white flour, bread, and pasta, can turn an okay meal into one that is good for you.

Choosing a healthy diet recipe for most meals has many benefits, especially for those with certain afflictions. For example, a perfect dinner for someone who needs a healthy diet recipe to help lower high cholesterol, could be a large salad with low fat dressing, cucumber, and tomato followed by whole-wheat pasta with a tomato and basil sauce, a piece of whole-wheat toasted garlic baguette with a touch of margarine, and a glass of skim milk or tea. One could finish off this healthy diet recipe with a cup of low fat or fat free frozen yogurt topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, or peach slices for desert.

Another great at home healthy diet recipe is baked chicken (peel off the skin before serving), baked potatoes with a low fat margarine and fat free sour cream, steamed baby carrots, and a whole wheat roll. You can turn the baked potatoes into mashed potatoes by adding some skim milk. If you do not have high blood pressure concerns, try adding a little salt and pepper to bring out the flavor. Another idea to go with this healthy diet recipe option is to dip your chicken in an outstanding barbeque sauce, such as KC Masterpiece.

Many restaurant chains also include items with healthy diet recipes on their menus. At Boston Market one can get over roasted turkey breast, new dill potatoes, and a helping of vegetable medley. If your getting especially adventurous, you could also add stuffing or cranberry sauce and have your own little Thanksgiving dinner. However, do not eat the corn bread muffin you will receive with it. It contains too many Trans fats and will turn a delicious healthy diet recipe into one that is bad for you.

With whole grain and healthy diet recipe ideas being the hot new thing, it is easier than ever to eat right. So what are you waiting for? Jump on the bandwagon and feel better, look better, and eat better!
Most of us think of raw sliced and diced vegetables along with dip for serving as simple party appetizers but did you realize that fresh fruit can be used in the very same way as well as in many other creative dishes? From apples to strawberries, there are so many fruity concoctions to make as side dishes and appetizers.

Although apples are perfect for dipping into sauces made with delicious ingredients like chocolate or caramel they are also ideal for using in side dishes. Combine apples with cheddar cheese and a variety of nuts for an interesting starter. You can also use apples along with all types of melons, mangos, oranges, peaches, pears, and strawberries to create a cool and refreshing fruit salad to serve either before or after dinner.

Avocados are a rather versatile fruit that you can use to create a number of crowd pleasing appetizers. Use avocados to make salsa as mild or as hot as you like and the fruit is also perfect for salads and of course, guacamole dip. Cut avocados in half and use them as "cups" for holding a number of delicious fillings that can be served before, during, or after the main course.

Dates and figs are both great for finger foods especially for parties. Stuff dates with cheese and grill ripe figs and serve them along with goat cheese and a drizzling of honey. Alternatively, for an even sweeter side dish for dessert, cover grapes with dark or milk chocolate for a sweet truffle that is a great alternative to the usual chocolate covered strawberries.

The cranberry is another delightful fruit to use in recipes for appetizers and side dishes and this small but tasty treat is full of antioxidants. In addition to cranberry sauce that is often served for holidays along side of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and gravy, use cranberries for making fruit salads and sweet, chunky salsas.

Cream Cheese and Cranberry Salsa Recipe

What You Need

3 cups fresh cranberries
1/4 cup green onions, minced
2 small jalapeno chili peppers, cored, seeded, minced
1/2 cup granulated white sugar
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, finely grated
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, minced
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 8 ounce packages cream cheese
Cranberries and cilantro sprigs for garnish
How to Make It

Thoroughly rinse and drain the cranberries discarding any that are soft or bruised.

Use a food processor to process the cranberries on the pulse setting until they are crushed and chopped but not too soft and mushy.

Transfer the crushed cranberries to a bowl and add the minced green onions, the jalapeno peppers, sugar, grated ginger, cilantro leaves, and fresh lemon juice and mix all of the ingredients together.

Cover the mixture with plastic wrap completely and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

After the salsa has chilled, put the cream cheese on a serving platter and cover with the cool salsa.

Garnish the dish with fresh cranberries and sprigs of cilantro and serve with a variety of fruits and crackers.

Serves 8

Rely on easy party appetizers that don't take long to prepare for creating an array of flavors and textures for guests to enjoy. Marshmallow fluff fruit dip is a longtime favorite that is sure to be a hit at your next party when served along with a variety of fresh fruits.
Roast turkey is a great family favourite, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. But after the feast, comes the question - how to use the leftovers? Here are five ways to make the most of your festive bird.

Leftover turkey sandwich recipes Use thick slices of turkey breast and add a little of the dark meat for flavour. Use different breads, like ciabatta rolls, baguettes, wholemeal bread, or toasted white bread. Add other ingredients, such as:
salad leaves like lettuce or spinach
sliced avocado
cherry tomatoes or thinly sliced beetroot
wafer-thin cooked ham
crumbled crispy bacon
sliced hard-boiled egg
soft cheeses, like Brie or Camembert
mustard, cranberry sauce, leftover turkey stuffing, pickles, mayonnaise, sliced gherkins, or radishes.
Leftover turkey salad recipes Use both white and dark meat. Cube or shred the leftover turkey.
Toss with toasted almonds, thin slices of fresh mango and soft salad leaves. Dress with a light vinaigrette.
Mix with cubed avocado, slivered yellow and red pepper, sweetcorn and halved cherry tomatoes. Dress with olive oil, whisked with lime juice and chilli.
Stir shredded turkey breast meat through cooled cooked thin rice noodles. Add shredded lettuce, matchstick slices of carrot and cucumber, and dress with a well-blended mixture of 2 parts light soy sauce to 1 part sweet chilli sauce.
Leftover turkey soup recipes
Add diced turkey to a basic vegetable soup recipe. Try it with celery and apple, in a chowder with sweetcorn, or as part of a spicy oriental soup, with noodles and shredded leaves.
Liven up turkey soup with herbs and spices. Try thyme and oregano, ground coriander, smoked paprika.
Leftover turkey and pasta recipes
Mix diced turkey into tomato and sweet pepper sauce and serve with rice or pasta.
Stir pesto through chopped leftover turkey for an instant pasta sauce.
Leftover turkey curry recipes
Turkey makes a great curry. Soften a chopped onion, add cubed turkey and curry paste. Cook for a few minutes, add stock. Stir well, simmer until turkey is heated throught. Serve with rice and naan bread.
Cook as above, but try red or green Thai curry paste, and use liquid made with creamed coconut grated into boiling water, or use canned coconut milk.
If you have more leftover turkey than you can use straight away, carve off slices on the same day that the turkey was cooked, interleave with cling wrap, overwrap with foil, pack in airtight plastic bags, and freeze. Keeps well in the freezer for 2-3 months.
The day after Thanksgiving I was still upset over the disaster of my Thanksgiving home made biscuits...among other things. It seems I just do not have the touch for baking. Dough and I simply do not get along. But I still wanted to make those creamy home made biscuits that melt in your mouth.

So, I concluded that the only way I could make good biscuits was to use the simplest recipe I could devise. And after a few trial and errors, I got it. Here it is:

Ingredients
2 cups Baking Mix (Bisquick is a popular brand but others will work)
1 cup (more or less) heavy cream (whipping cream)

Directions
1. Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees F.
2. Put baking mix in a large bowl and slowly add heavy cream while stirring. Stir until a dough forms and pulls away from sides of bowl. The dough should be tacky but not crumbly or sticky wet. You may need more or less heavy cream. If the dough is too sticky, add more baking mix. If to dry and crumbly, add more cream.
3. Roll out dough on a flat surface to about one inch thickness.
4. Use a 2 inch biscuit cutter to cut out the biscuits.
5. Place cut biscuits on a non-greased cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown on top.
Makes about 6 biscuits.

Notes:
1. If you have parchment paper, line the cookie sheet with the paper prior to placing biscuits on cookie sheet. It helps to prevent the bottoms from browning too fast.
2. These biscuits are very moist inside and you may prefer a drier biscuit. When the biscuits are golden brown on top, break one biscuit open and check if the inside is done to your preference. If too moist, turn biscuits over and bake another 5 minutes.

Serve hot.

In addition to the biscuit problem after Thanksgiving, I was wondering what to do with some of the left overs. I had cranberry sauce (with whole berries), pumpkin pie mix and blueberries that I planned on throwing away. But then a friend suggested making bread with the left overs. As mentioned earlier, baking and I do not get along, so bread was out of the question.

However, I did have a zucchini bread recipe that always came out good. So, I used that recipe without the zucchini. Here is the result:

Ingredients
* 3 eggs
* 1 cup vegetable oil
* 2 cups sugar
* 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 3 cups all purpose flour
* 1 cup pumpkin pie filling
* 1/2 cup blueberries
* 1/2 cup fresh cranberries (cooked) or canned whole berry cranberry sauce.
* 3 teaspoons cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
* water, as needed

Directions
1. If you are using fresh cranberries, cook according to package instructions.
2. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees F.
3. Grease and flour two 8x4 inch loaf pans.
4. In a medium size bowl, beat eggs until light and frothy. Add oil and vanilla and mix well.
5. In a separate large bowl, combine all remaining ingredients and mix well.
6. Add egg mixture to flour mix and stir until well blended.
7. At this point, you may need to add enough water to obtain a batter. Should look like pancake batter.
8. Pour mixture equally into prepared loaf pans.
9. Bake about 60 minutes or until a knife inserted into top of loaf comes out dry.

This zucchini-less zucchini bread came out yummy on the first attempt. It really should be called dessert rather than bread because it is sweet. It is also very moist so it will keep well for several days.

If you are a cook that has as many failures as successes, give these two recipes a try. Neither requires a lot of skill and you will be pleased with your results.
Thanks Giving Day is celebrated in the US on November 26, 2009. Dinner is one of the main features of the day. Of course, the main menu served in the dinner on that day is the roasted or baked Turkey and Cranberry sauce.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=widgetsamazon-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0007CILYS&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">
Turkey plays such a predominant role on the dining table during the dinner of the Thanks Giving Day and so that day is even called as 'Turkey Day'.

Recognizing the important role of Turkey as a traditional Thanks Giving Bird, three towns in the US have even taken the name of the bird: Turkey in Texas, Turkey Creek in Louisiana and Turkey in North Carolina.

However, in the earliest Thanks Giving Day celebrated in the year 1621 in the Plymouth colony, Turkey was not a menu in the dining table. Historians are not completely certain about the actual menu that adorned the dining table on that day. However, they are sure about two items on the menu and they were: venison and the wild fowl.

But modern Thanks Giving Day dinner in the US entirely revolve around Turkey.Turkey being the chief menu on that day, they are sold as hot cakes on the eve of the day. Hence, selling turkey is a great business that has a great marketing potential throughout the US.

The National Turkey Federation which is supervising the demand and supply of Turkey in the US has revealed quite interesting information about Turkey. Nearly 250 million Turkeys are raised in the year 2009 for slaughter whose worth is about $ 4.5 billions.

Of them, nearly 46 million birds come to the dining table and consumed during the dinner of the Thanks Giving Day. In a survey conducted by the National Turkey Federation nearly 88 % of Americans eat Turkey at the Thanks Giving Day dinner. The average weight of a Turkey bird that is purchased by an American is 15 pounds.

To raise Turkey chicks, an artificial insemination method is being followed in the Turkey farms since there is no scope for natural copulation and fertilization among them.

Minnesota is the top Turkey producing state followed by the states like North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia and California.

The Cranberry sauce is another notable menu on the dining table of the Thanks Giving Day dinner. According to the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association, Cranberry is one of the fruits that are entirely native to the North American soil, the other two fruits being blue berry and the Concord grape.

US farmers will produce 709 million pounds of Cranberries every year. The top producers of Cranberries are the States of Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

Both Turkey and Cranberry sauce forms the main menu and occupies a primary position in the dinner on the dining table during the Thanks Giving Day celebration in the US, mainly because, they are entirely native to the Americans.
Valentine's Day is a day for love and I like to prepare cranberry stuffed Cornish game hens with a little roasted asparagus on the side. This is a tradition in my house that I learned from my father.

One day we were in the supermarket (I was young), and when we went to the poultry section I saw what I thought were tiny chickens. When I asked my dad what they were he told me they were Cornish game hens. Since the next day was Valentine's Day I asked if he would cook them for me as a present. He's my father, what do you think the answer was?
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=widgetsamazon-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B000001E7L&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

It was heaven. My father was always a good cook but to this day it is the incredible combination of the bitterness of the cranberry with the sweetness of the game hen that I will remember most about that day.

So, here's what you need to do. Prepare a package rice mix according to package directions and stir in 1/2 cup of celery and 1/2 cup of slivered almonds and half of a can of jellied cranberry sauce. After washing the Cornish hens inside and out, dry with a paper towel.

Put a cup or so of the stuffing mixture into the cavity of each hen and place into a shallow roasting pan. Brush with your favorite oil and roast the birds in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes, occasionally basting with vegetable oil. Then melt the other half of the can of cranberry sauce and pour it over top. That's it!

Have a Happy Valentine's Day!

So, you ask, what is the 'Cranberry', and is it really a 'Superfood'?

The Cranberry shrub is a fairly innocuous small evergreen frequently grown in acidic lowlands in the colder areas of North America.
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=widgetsamazon-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B001NZ2STC&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

The berry of the cranberry shrub begins as a pure pale white, however as it grows and becomes ripe it changes to a rich cherry hue.

Although it is actually a member of the same plant group as the bilberry and the blueberry, the cranberry berry is marginally further tart, which, as a result helps to balance out the pleasing sweetness, which puts it in that unique niche in the culinary universe of ingredients that work well with meat based meals and sweeter courses, such as cakes, cookies, fruits, pastries and candies.

Cranberries possibly were given their name from the fact that they are frequently consumed by cranes (ie 'crane-berry') - although some experts suspect that the true etymology of the name is rooted in the observable fact in the earlier stages of the bush's growth, it looks a little bit like the shape of a crane. No matter what the real etymology, the name 'cranberry' is now established through the whole world.

Cranberries represent a major economic cash crop in some US States (in the north), and now have a really unique and historic place in The traditional culture of the American nation as some people believe that they were offered to early settlers by the aboriginal population. As a result, cranberry sauce is a necessary piece of the beloved thanksgiving meal eaten by many millions of Americans every year since.

The majority of the yearly cranberry yield is converted to cranberry juice and cranberry jelly, however more and more of it is now sold in its raw form as a consequence of health benefit claims that cranberry is one of the 'superfoods', having very beneficial nutritional content and antioxidant 'reducing agent' characteristics.

Historically, these versatile berries were grown in 'cranberry beds' positioned in moisture rich marsh, but latterly the beds are located in upland regions with a water table that is on the shallow side. In these regions, contrary to popular belief, the beds are not flooded but are continuously irrigated to maintain a high moisture level in the cranberry beds.

Cranberry juice is now sold every country, and as well as the well known 'crimson' juice, is also available in a clear or 'white' form which is made from the younger berries.

Cranberries' Health Benefits

Some people believe that the juice of the cranberry is blessed with healthy benefits which aid in preventing bacterial infections in the urinary system.

Also, this delicious berry has been useful in dealing with many other troubles, such as a treatment for flesh wounds, bowel problems, diabetes, stomach upsets, and as an aid to a healthful liver. Some research has been done which suggests that everyday consumption of cranberry juice may help to reduce the chances of heart conditions.

As with all similar medical claims, one should exercise exceptional discretion - professional opinion is still divided and the correct reason for increasing your consumption of these versatile berries is the observable fact they really taste wonderful! As detailed previously, these versatile berries are used in preparing both desserts and meat based dishes, with the best known use being as an accompaniment to the traditional roast turkey. Don't let this 'good old fashioned' use put you off though, these versatile and tasty berries are also quite superb when used in sweet dishes.
