Nokia Belle OS: 7 new features

Nokia Symbian Belle is getting a new name. The company has announced that the next version of Nokia's Symbian OS will be called Nokia Belle. Not just this, the OS will also be soon available on some of the older Nokia smartphones like, Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7 and Nokia Oro. These phones are currently running on older Symbain operating systems.

As Nokia Belle expands its reach, here's looking into all that the OS packs.

1. 6 homescreens
With Nokia Belle the number of homescreens expand from the current three to six.
2. Multitasking

Belle brings improved multitasking functionality. Instead of the old task switcher, Belle lets users flick between live images of their open apps and move quickly between them.

3. Widgets

Belle brings redesigned widgets like the clock, email, music player, favourite contacts and the calendar which come in five different sizes. The widgets can also be rearranged to create a completely personalised set of screens.

4. Notifications

Just like in the Android and iOS 5, Nokia Belle also comes with a pull down menu for notifications from any homescreen. This menu offers control for missed calls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and common settings.

According to Nokia, the status bar sports a more modern and flat look.

5. Lockscreen

Belle also adds changes in the lockscreen. The new update allows users to add colour wallpaper and missed event notifications.

In a recent survey, data security firm Imperva has analyzed the hacked passwords of the website RockYou and has revealed some shocking results. You will be surprised to know that “123456″ was the most frequently used password on the web !

42 % of the passwords used lowercase letters from “a to z”.
6 % of the passwords were a mix of alpha-numeric and other characters.
Many of the top 20 passwords used were Spanish names.

1.Bush Hid the Facts/This App Can Break
This is one of the most popular notepad tricks because of its mysterious nature. In order to get an idea as to what this trick does, just follow the steps given below:
Open Notepad.
Type “BUSH HID THE FACTS” or “this app can break” (without quotes).
Save that file with any name and close it.
Open It Again to see the magic.

Reason For This Behavior: It is known as the 4335 Rule. It means that if we enter four words separated by spaces, wherein the first word has 4 letters, the next two have three letters each, and the last word has five letters. Then Notepad Automatically hides the text into unknown code.

Disappointing indeed.
However a developer with the name Novchik has managed to create a stripped down version of Angry Birds for “slower” versions of Symbian lowering the system requirements of original version of Angry Birds. The graphics have been modded to run smoothly on S60V5 (Symbian 9.4) devices and some tweaks have been made but it maintains the core game play. In total 45 levels of game play is there and is available for FREE!

Modded version of mobile game Angry Birds is compatible with Nokia N8, C7, Nokia E7, Nokia N97, Nokia C6 (01), Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, Nokia 5250, Nokia 5235, Nokia 5233, Nokia 5230 Nuron and Nokia 5228. If you have some other symbian based phone then you can try to run it since it’s a java installation (.jar) and the only problem that might crop up is that of screen resolution. Thought the compatibility is only with above mentioned mobile phones but any device having a processor of around 400 Mhz should be able to run it.

Threaded sms has been one feature which Nokia has failed to deliver in it’s mobile phones, be it S60v3 or S60v5. Though it isn’t a game changer but certainly a plus point when it comes to ease of access. Attending to this issue EHandySoft has come up with a solution for Symbian users, a mobile application that serves you SMS’s in threaded form, categorising ‘em neatly.
ThreadSMS is a utility app which once installed quietly sits in background and acts as an alternative of native sms app, displaying text messages in form of thread allowing you to keep a better track of the sms’s received as well as sent to a particular person. Purpose well served with a few challenges.

ThreadSMS Review

Anyway, I played around with ThreadSMS for quite some time and found it better than its competitors.
The installation size is just under 550 KB (on a S60v5 device) and it can be installed either on phone memory or memory card, an option I didn’t expect it to have. Setting it up is even easier, during the initial launch it’ll automatically read the sms’s (all of ‘em in Inbox, Sent items, etc) and properly categories them under suitable heads. By default it shows/reads 60 SMS in total but that limit can be easily increased from ‘Settings’ option. However I found that making ThreadSMS show more than 120 SMS slows down the application.
Moving on, the User Interface is nice, all the sms’s are sorted to their own contact and shown in groups with total number of conversations aptly displayed on the right. Clicking on any group will lead you to the full conversation view where all sent/received messages are shown and you can also reply from the same window, no extra steps needed. What has been discussed above is the core functionality of ThreadSMS, besides this it allows you to:

Backup all the sms’s in a text file. Can be used as an alternative for Nokia PC Suite but lacks restoring.
Password protect a set of sms’s. Useful for you know what reasons
Delete sms’s from selected contacts, which can be a tedious task when done through native sms app.
Preview incoming sms. Very very useful indeed.

What I Did Not Like About ThreadSMS

Though it does what it says fairly well but still I wasn’t happy with how it behaved as a SMS app. Some of the improvements I’d like to see in future versions are:

Smooth UI, even more polished.
Ability to enter phone number manually rather than first going to contacts screen and then clicking on ‘Back’ to enter number.
Addition of more elegant chat screens.
Blended in with mobile’s default sms app to give a sense of it belonging to Mobile’s OS itself rather a separate app.

Widgetize Home-Screen Of Nokia 5230, 5800 (And other s60v5 based phones)

Nokia’s touch phone have a great advantage of being user friendly. More importantly some of Nokia’s phone viz. Nokia N97 mini, etc allow one touch access to any desired application or bookmark right from its widgetized homescreen! However, not every touch phone (s60v5 running OS) has this functionality of widgetizing the home screen. Especially Nokia 5800 being the most deserving of the lot as well as Nokia 5230 (Amongst the most cheap mobile phone offers with almost all the functionalities as that of Nokia 5800).

For this reason, an open source application with the nameWidgetizer has been developed for all the Nokia touch based mobile phone running OS s60v5.Widgetizer is a small application with installation size of few hundred kb’s which runs quietly in the background without being a stress on battery consumption or ram usage. It allows you to place few useful icons viz. Music player, Bluetooth, Torch, Bookmark (web) and Date (HTC version) on the home-screen similar to that of Nokia N97. The procedure of placing the desired icons is simple, all you need to do is open the app, select the icon, change its appearance configuration (height, width, etc) and tap on save. Upon doing so the icon(s) will appear on the homescreen.

My Review

Limited number of icons available

I was looking for a similar app to widgetize the home-screen of my Nokia 5800 and Nokia 5230. I would call this app as an initial step towards a great homescreen widgetizer mobile application. The reason’s being:

In terms of configuration, other than ability to change dimensions of icons, this app has nothing else to offer.
It doesn’t allow you to disable auto-start (not bad but an option must have been there).
Limited number of icons (currently only 4 are there).

This being said, what i like about this app was that it sits quietly in the background without you even realising it’s running (not shown in menu) and the icons on home-screen are flexible i.e their location can be adjusted as per the needs. In a nutshell, Widgetizer isn’t a utility i would use or recommend to other Nokia touchphone users but improvements in the above mentioned area’s in the next release can really make this a must have application for Nokia s60v5 based touch phones!
