A Collectors’ Dream Weekend at Fantasy of Flight, June 8-9

Review of Antarctica--Empire of the Penguin (pics)

SeaWorld Orlando premiered a new attraction this weekend in the form of Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin. It's very much a lush Disney-style production with high-end design values and the big budget for theming. Be sure to scroll to the bottom for the pictures!

Some of the reaction online has been muted, at least publicly. In private, I've heard several folks would have been on the ride express actual disappointment. I'm pretty sure the problem is one of setting expectations. I didn't experience the attraction until Monday night, by which time I had already seen a number of bland reviews, and had been told to lower my expectations. I went in expecting something on the level of the Living Seas, therefore, and what I found greatly exceeded this lowered expectation. The ride should not be pumped up as an E-Ticket experience. It's not thrilling in the physical sense. Nor is it all consuming as a theme attraction, the way a dark ride such as Tokyo's version of Winnie the Pooh is. The ride does share the trackless technology of Tokyo's honeypot ride, however, so perhaps comparisons here are inevitable. The Tokyo ride is superior in every way, primarily because it is much longer, it does inventive things like make everyone bounce along with the screen, and it has established and beloved characters to show us around every corner.

The Orlando attraction has set pieces alone. They try to create a character for us, a baby penguin named Puck, but it's hard to get invested in only a few minutes and it really cannot compete with Winnie the Pooh. Just like you cannot make a great novel with setting alone, you cannot make a premier theme park attraction with just fantastic set pieces. However, you can come pretty close, and Antarctica does come pretty close. It's an absolutely successful dark ride that does some of the same tricks as the Tokyo Disney attraction, such as dispatching cars in a cohort and having them dance around the room in a complicated ballet. The technology involved is very impressive, and the cars not only move around, they also spin around and if you're taking the Wild version of the ride. The spinning adds some definite interest to an otherwise sedate pace. The cars are also simulators, and each one comes with its own motion base. This is put to good use, adding even more zest to the journey around the room.

There is something aimless about how and why we move throughout the large set pieces, however. There doesn't seem to be a compelling story reason behind it, and neither do the cars moved with enough frenetic energy to give it a real pop. The result is that this medium-speed pace feels slightly out of place. The ride is not slow and majestic, but neither is it frantic and thrilling. That might be okay if the story was compelling enough, but I'm not sure that it is.

The set design, on the other hand, truly is compelling. I would venture to say that the level of decoration is on par with a Disney attraction. It's very expensive to provide this kind of 360° rock work, but they clearly spared no expense when creating Antarctica. Many of the rooms use physical sets, but others will blend in video screens, often with great success and quite fluidly.

The ride portion is pretty short, and after just a couple of rooms we are already invited to disembark and wander through the penguin exhibits. Given the attraction poster, I had assumed that the ride vehicles went through the area where the penguins are, but this is not the case. Instead, after we disembark we can see the penguins in an enclosure right next to us. Unlike the original version of the penguin exhibit, where they were behind glass, this is an open air exhibit. The penguins are often mere inches away from you, and it's easy to see how they might pop out of the enclosure if they wanted to, as indeed they have done a couple of times already. They are being trained to stay inside, however, without resorting to oversized glass walls.

I liked that you could down spend as much time as you want with the penguins. Previously, you could only get close by going on the moving sidewalk, but now anyone who wants to can truly linger. I'm not sure that many will linger much in the summer months, if they're dressed for the warm weather, since it's so cold here with the penguins. But it's nice to give the choice to the guests themselves.

The land they have built around this attraction is impressive in its own right. A veritable Fortress of Solitude, the carved ice walls glistening with fake snow and azure-colored ice pockets loom high overhead as though ready to calve off from a glacier at any moment. Gigantic icicles pledge simulated danger from above. I haven't seen this area at night yet, but I bet it will be spectacular.

The merchandise shop got a facelift but doesn't seem too different in form and function. The food operations, however, are completely new. The café here offers scramble style service, which is always a blessing and a curse because they can be vexing to have to stand in three separate lines for everything your family needs.

There's a good amount of seating nearby, with our favorite being the fully enclosed and air-conditioned dining hall in the back. It's crammed full of junk and might, at first glance, remind you of the wild Arctic attraction. But with the voiceover radio and narration, I'm more reminded of Restaurantosaurus in Animal Kingdom, but in a ripoff kind of way rather than a flattering one.

The food was actually pretty good. We liked most of the things on the pasta and sandwich menu, and the kids meals were good values at the station for Asian food. Only the macaroni and cheese disappointed at the American station — it just seemed to lack flavor entirely.

Obviously, most visitors won't be coming here for the food, but rather the new ride. SeaWorld has never had a true dark ride before, but they have one now. However, it's crucial that you not get your hopes up too high for this attraction. Because it's new, it attracts a lot of attention, with the result that lines can be pretty long. Compounding the problem is the fact that the workers aren't very good yet at gauging how long it will take to wait through the line. We waited almost 3 hours at a moment when the posted wait time said 90 minutes. Part of the delay was certainly due to some ride downtime just before we got to the loading area, but that wasn't all of it. It was odd that this same shutdown played out without any announcements to the visitors standing in line. It just simply stopped moving for almost 30 minutes, and then it started moving again.

The bottom line is that this is a good attraction, and we will not only be back for it, we will be happy to wait in line for it. But not a three-hour line, and probably not even a one-hour line. But half an hour? Yes, we would probably do that. A ride like this fills in a gaping hole that had been in SeaWorld’s lineup of attractions, and it makes the park a more well-rounded experience now.

New entertainment at Nick Hotel - Bfast, 4D theater, Dora show

The Nick Hotel has recently debuted a trifecta of new entertainment (disclosure: I was part of a press event treated to a breakfast and private shows of the attractions), in the form of a revised character breakfast, a new 3D movie (plus effects, which make it "4D"), and a new live action character stage show.

SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom Breakfast
The all you can eat buffet at the Nick Hotel has long had characters wandering from table to table, but now they are just SpongeBob characters (Dora and Diego were also present until recently), which means they can do more show-specific songs every 20 minutes or so. Expect plenty of time to meet and take pictures with the likes of SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy. The buffet includes all typical breakfast foods, both hot and cold, and an omelet station where your food will be made to order.

SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D Movie: The Great Jelly Rescue
I've always loved 3D movies in themed environments, and this one goes a step further by including a laundry list of in-theater effects: bubbles, water mist, pumped in smell (of fondue), "snow" (actually soap bubbles), a rumble seat, and a tickle string from under the chair. It's a fun movie with lots of chase scenes - rather manic, actually, and ideal for young boys.

Dora’s Friendship Fiesta

Ideal for young girls, on the other hand, is the new show dedicated to Dora. You'll find the familiar songs and a few faces you know (Boots and Diego join Dora on stage), as well as songs and a few characters from other shows (confession: I didn't know them). The meet and greet afterward is an excellent way to take photos with these characters, since they aren't at the breakfast buffet anymore.

All in all, it's a good re-tooling of offerings at the Nick Hotel. They continue the slime show, the outdoor mass sliming, and the big water playground - really a hotel-based water park - that is the main draw for this hotel.

7 Dwarfs Mine Coaster - Will it be Ninja or Big Bad Wolf? (analysis)

The jury is definitely still out on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Coaster.

It will have lots of curves. It will have some drops and surprises. It will definitely have some animatronics (echoes perhaps of the Legoland Dragon coaster).

But will it be any good?

The world has seen coasters that swing before, primarily from "suspended" coasters. (An aside: 'inverted' coasters are ones where your legs are unsupported; suspended are when the individual cars still have floors). Ninja at Six Flags Magic Mountain was my first suspended, and it's fun all right... but it's not amazing.

Big Bad Wolf (now gone) at Busch Gardens Williamsburg was just like Ninja, except it was fast, exciting, and had truly interesting elements (the drop to the water was intense and unlike anything else).

They were both suspended coasters, but they were not equivalent experiences.

The Seven Dwarfs coaster promises to have swing to it - will it be more like Ninja or more like Big Bad Wolf? The proof of the pudding will come out eventually... for now, there is just no knowing. Only praying.

Neverending Pie Buffet (Review)

The Great American Pie Festival is an annual event held in Orlando and Kissimmee. It's a multiday affair, with pie baking, judging, and competitions. There are also cooking demos, entertainment, and a host raft of events at a hotel (the Caribe Royale). But for many, the signature event is the all you can eat pie buffet, which is exactly what it sounds like. For $10, you can gorge until you can eat no more.

There's pie from perhaps a dozen bakers (most of them national brands, but I didn't know all the names, so some might be local), all set up on tables. You stroll up, grab one or more in plastic clamshells, and move to the next booth to repeat. There must have been a few dozen different varieties, between all the booths.

Your $10 ticket includes a bottled water (or three or four, depending on how many tickets your cashier hand you), as well as unlimited coffee and iced coffee. The Publix booth offers ice cream (and some toppings), and the Cabot booth had cheese samples, a new thing this year. It had the longest lines.

The event is always popular, and this year it was more crowded than ever. If it hasn't already reached the maximum capacity for this location in Celebration, it's awfully close. The picnic area where it's held was overflowing this year.

As always, though, it was well worth the money. I look forward to this every year!

Chuy's Mexican Food in Kissimmee - A Review

A chain called Chuy's (which started in Austin TX in 1982) has recently opened near Walt Disney World. You could think of it as something like El Torito, Acapulco's, or a billion other chain Mexican restaurants, but the reality is, this one is the best of the chains, in terms of food. Fresh, flavorful, and with every element of our visit perfect.

We dropped by at 6:30 on a Sunday - the parks were all still open, so the crowds might get worse later. For now, we had no wait for a table, but it was almost full inside. It's only been open for several weeks, and it's located quite close to WDW along US-192-West, in Kissimmee (if you know the area, a new Target opened up recently across the street).

The decor is crowded, cluttered, and eclectic, a bit like House of Blues in affect but nothing like it in style. It's more whimsical. One room was chock full of hubcaps on the ceiling!!

They make tortillas right on the spot, which I didn't notice until we were on the way out. I should have ordered the fajitas (which in fairness the server did recommend).

What we did order was superior. The guacamole ($5) was an effective pair to the free chips and salsa. My wife, a salsa expert, found this one among her very favorites. A creamy jalepeno dip was also brought out for us - think of this as looking like ranch dressing but tasting like heaven. Great on the chips AND on the food, which came next.

My wife had the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (I think about $11), a chicken burrito with a fiery kick. Not spicy just for the sake of being spicy, but actually having flavor. I can tell you this is rare. We love Mexican food and don't find very much authentic stuff out here in Florida, but this one was nice.

I had a combo plate ($10). The ground beef taco was divertingly tasty, and I gobbled it up before noticing I had started. The chicken chalupa (better thought of as a tostada) was also excellent, though this one didn't disappear before I knew what happened. I didn't even have room to taste my enchilada!

Bottom line: this is probably my favorite chain Mexican food in the world. It also beats many of the family-run Mexican restaurants we knew growing up in Southern California. We will be back for sure!

Fantasy of Flight now open only Thurs-Sun, effective May 6

POLK CITY (April 25, 2013) - Effective May 6, Fantasy of Flight is introducing new operating hours. The attraction will open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. All previously scheduled group reservations or events will take place as planned.

Fantasy of Flight creator and founder Kermit Weeks also announced plans to make the most of the new schedule to refine the popular attraction elements and develop new experiences that speak to the attraction's mission: to "Light that Spark Within."™

The aviation attraction opened in 1995 as a way to display and share Weeks' growing vintage airplane collection to the public. It has now become the world's largest private collection, rivaling many national museums, and is also home to the World's Greatest Aircraft Collection - a not-for-profit organization dedicated to "rebuilding and reliving the passion of the past."

Weeks said, "Over the years I've realized there are a number of people fascinated with aircraft but there are even more fascinated by flight. Flight is a powerful metaphor, which more than anything symbolizes pushing our boundaries, reaching beyond ourselves, and freedom."

To take advantage of this opportunity, Weeks decided to close on days that had not been traditionally as busy and use the time to focus on development. Sea Dog Brewing Company Opens Second Restaurant in Florida: New Orlando Location Joins Clearwater as the Newest Pub in the Pack

Orlando, Florida - AMaine-based Sea Dog Brewing Company will open its second brew pub in Florida on Thursday, April 25. Its first location opened in Clearwater earlier this year.

Sea Dog is the sister brewery to Shipyard Brewing Company, which opened the world's first airport microbrewery in the Orlando International Airport in 1997.

"We're glad to be back in Orlando," noted company owner, Fred Forsley.
"When we had to move the brewery out of the airport during renovations about a decade ago, we set a goal to return to Orlando and, today, that goal has been realized. We opened a Shipyard Brew Pub in Winter Park a couple of years ago, but we have really wanted to have a location again in the tourist area of Orlando where visitors from around the world as well as locals can enjoy the Sea Dog experience."

The Thursday, April 25 events at the Sea Dog in Orlando begin at 4:00pm with a ribbon cutting by the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. Beer and food specials will run throughout the evening.

This new restaurant is located in the Lake Buena Vista tourist area at 8496 Palm Parkway in the Vista Centre Shoppes. The menu features fresh seafood, New England inspired pub fare and award-winning Sea Dog and Shipyard craft brews. Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week. Kids and late night menus are also available. The hours are 11:30am - 2:00am.

Sea Dog Brewing Company was founded in 1993 and has three pubs in Maine (South Portland, Topsham, and Bangor) as well as three licensed locations in Massachusetts. In February, Sea Dog's first Florida pub opened in Clearwater (26200 US 19, near the Courtside Mall). Sea Dog beer is brewed in a traditional English style, resulting in brews with a distinctive, refreshing taste and crisp finish.

Legoland discounts for Polk County residents select weekends in May

(April 16, 2013) – Polk County residents will save a bundle this May when heading to their favorite theme park with more than 50 rides, shows and attractions geared to families with children ages 2 to 12. LEGOLAND Florida is offering a special rate for Polk County residents during select dates, the weekends of May 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19, of only $25 plus tax for one single day admission to LEGOLAND Florida and LEGOLAND Water Park (ages 3+). In addition to this great rate, $1 for each ticket sold will be donated to support early childhood education throughout Polk County through a partnership with the United Way of Central Florida.

Neverending Pie Buffet is this weekend in Celebration

The unlimited dessert buffet that takes over Celebration every year is back. This year, it happens this Saturday (starting at 11am) and Sunday (starting at noon). For $10/adult, you can sample as much pie as you want. There are, ahem, dozens of varieties, so come hungry.

They gave out free water bottles last year, though they ran out somewhat quickly. Maybe bring drinks along with your hunger?

Headlining the event is chef, television personality and cookbook author Sara Moulton. Moulton recently kicked off her third season as host of public television's "Sara's Weeknight Meals." The conference is the brainchild of Isabel Laessig, Tampa, Fla., whose Sunday Supper Movement on Twitter @FamilyFoodie was started in 2011 and currently has more than 2 million followers. "I started the Sunday Supper Movement when my oldest daughter left for college," said Isabel. "Before she left, I asked her what she would miss most about home. Her answer: 'The time we spend in the kitchen. I can't imagine not being here for Sunday Supper.' It really spoke to me to realize that my 18-year-old's fondest memories were the ones we created in the kitchen. I started my blog the day after she left and started tweeting about our family's #SundaySupper every Sunday and a movement began."

As the Sunday Supper Movement grew, Isabel also befriended many bloggers and others in social media who were interested in how she started the movement and in learning more in general about how to make their various businesses a success. She created the Food & Wine Conference as a way to bring these bloggers and experts together to network and learn.
