Dear friends,

Thank you for walking with me on this journey and for supporting me in your prayers. I can see how God works and answers in His perfect timing.

In my last prayer letter I wrote about my desire to be a sign of the Kingdom of God in the midst of the community where I serve. This has become the direction of my life.

A few amazing things happened in the last two months, things I perceive as God’s answers to our prayers. As I focused and asked for direction so that I could be a sign of His Kingdom, I was able to see that not in me but in one of the kids from the community center. E. is a 17 year old girl who has participated in the activities at the WMF Valley community center ever since she was 6. She grew up with us, learning to discover who she is, learning the language of love, getting to know the love of the Lord, and learning to cope with her father’s death and her mother’s absence.

This year E. and her brother had to go to what we call a Minors’ center as the relatives who had become their tutors could no longer take care of them. In Romania, children under 18 years old will go to what we call “Minors’ center” when their parents are not around. This is a government run center where children in the given situation are forced to go and live for an indefinite period of time, all the while not being involved in any educational activities.

As compared to this place, the activities at our community center are very structured, everything is organized, and every person involved in the program knows exactly what they are supposed to do. This structure has helped us grow as individuals, as a community and it has helped the kids in ways we didn’t know were possible. The healthy structure in our lives has helped them see the necessity of a good rhythm not only when they are around us. Our dearest friend E. had to spend a few hard months in this new, unfamiliar and hard place to be and she did it gracefully. Not only did she not forget about what she had learned but continued to live out her values. Like a speck of the “salt of the earth” she even influenced the people she had to live among for a while. Her sweet presence brought changes even in the structure of the program there. She instituted the afternoon nap, made the other kids change the way they talk, started game hour and quiet time. We were told about the change in this little boy’s conduct who would manipulate everyone. His mom is now grateful for the influence E. had in his life.

I also see the manifestation of God’s Kingdom in every child’s reaction when he or she does something wrong and then wants to correct that. Their desire to grow, to learn, to change destructive patterns, to become better persons humbles me and teaches me valuable lessons.

These examples may be insignificant to some. They are so big to us. They are so precious to God.

Going to the latest activities, I’d like to list a few things here:

- We visited a few local churches in Galati and we have been so warmly welcomed. We are thankful the invitation and for their love and support.

- David and Lenuta Chronic are back from their Sabbatical time. We have missed them dearly and are so happy to have them back. Our joy is even grater to see them so full of energy. Their experienced has already enriched us and we are looking forward to hearing more about their time away.

- Frank Summers from Anglia came to visit. All his visits here are marked by visible signs. He always builds or fixes something. This time he installed a new alarm system.

- Annie Keith and the Moldova Servant Team spent a week a great week with us.

- The staff and the kids celebrated Easter together. We sang, prayed, played and of course ate great food.

- A group of youth from Texas spent a day at the centre, playing and singing with the kids.

- We went for a picnic on May 1^st, the National Labour Day in Romania. We enjoyed being out.

Prayer requests:

- We will take a much needed staff retreat on May 9^th – 15^th (this letter will actually be posted afterwards). Pray that we will rest, strengthen our relationships, spend time with the Lord, regroup and be filled with new strength.

- As the team from Moldova shared some of the challenges they face, they’ve asked us to pray for them as a community and for the children they serve among. To make prayer intentional and personal, they handed out little notes with names on them. I am to pray for Tirzah (ST member) and for two children from Moldova: Marin and Tania. You are invited to join me in this.

- Please pray for wisdom as we administrate what God gives us. As part of the administration department I need this wisdom if I want to be a good steward of His resources.

- Pray for me, that I become a sign of God’s kingdom in my community, in my church, in “the valley, in my city.

Mă bucur că sunteţi alături de mine pe acest drum şi că mă susţineţi în rugăciune. Văd cum Dumnezeu lucreză şi răspunde la vremea potrivită.

În ultima scrisoare de rugăciune am vorbit puţin despre cum pot fi un semn al Împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu în mijlocul comunităţii unde slujesc. Văd acest lucru ca fiind o direcţie spre care ţintesc.

S-au întâmplat câteva lucruri uimitoare în ultimele două luni, ca răspuns la rugăciunile voastre. Unul dintre motivele pe care le adusesem la cunoştinţa voastră era dorinţa mea de a fi, aşa cum am spus, un semn al Împărăţiei. Înainte de a vedea acest lucru în mine, l-am văzut în copiii pe care îi am în jurul meu în fiecare zi.

Unul dintre ei, E. a ajuns la centrul de minori deoarece mama este plecată la muncă în străinătate. Din povestirile ei am realizat că în acest centru, în afară de ora mesei, nimic altceva nu este programat; copiii care stau acolo nu au nimic de făcut. În centrul La Vale, lucrurile stau altfel, tot programul este structurat şi organizat şi fiecare copil ştie ce urmează să se întâmple. Nu numai atât, dar vedem cum caracterul sănătos al activităţilor pe care le desfăşurăm are efect asupra copiilor printre care slujim, astfel încât ei văd necesitatea unui ritm bun în orice circumstanţă. Astfel, ajunsă în centrul de minori, E. a determinat personalul de acolo să schimbe în bine câteva lucruri. În timpul cât E. a stat acolo a instituit somnul la prânz, a cerut celorlalţi să spună „mulţumesc”, „te rog frumos” şi „iartă-mă” şi chiar a influenţat în bine un copil care manipula pe cei din jur, obţinând mereu ce voia. Astăzi mama acelui copil ne spune despre schimbarea produsă.

Manifestarea Împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu o văd, de asemenea, în ficare copil atunci când acesta greşeşte, primeşte o consecinţă şi apoi doreşte să se schimbe, să se îndrepte, să înveţe să reactioneze altfel şi pe viitor.

Poate sunt lucruri mici în ochii unora, noi însă, Îl vedem pe Dumnezeul nostru mare în aceste lucruri.

Dintre activităţile care s-au petrecut în ultimul timp, menţionez:

- Vizite la bisericile din Galati. Le mulţumim pentru invitaţie, deschidere şi sprijin.

- Întoarcerea din perioada de sabat spiritual a familieiChronic – David şi Lenuţa. Le-am simtit lipsa în acest an şi de aceea, bucuria noastră este foarte mare acum că s-au întors plini de resursele de care au nevoie în slujire. Experienţa lor ne-a îmbogăţit deja şi pe noi.

- Vizita lui Frank Summers din Anglia. Fiecare vizită a lui este marcată de semne vizibile la centrul nostru. De data aceasta, Frank a montat un nou sistem de alarmă.

- Participarea la viaţacomunităţii de aici a echipei de slujire din Moldova, condusă de Annie Keith.

- Am sărbătorit Paştele împreună cu copiii şi familiile lor mâncând împreună ca o mare familie.

- Un grup de tineri din Texas a organizat un timp de cântece şi jocuri pentru copiii care vin la centrul comunitar.

- De ziua naţională a muncii am mers la pădurea Gârboavele şi ne-am bucurat de aer liber, de verdeaţă şi unii de alţii.

Motive de rugăciune:

- În săptămâna 9 – 15 mai suntem plecaţi cu toată comunitatea în retragere; rugaţi-vă ca Dumnezeu să ne vorbească şi să ne apropiem mai mult de El.

- Echipa de slujire din Moldova, împreună cu Annie Keith, au împărtăşit cateva din problemele lor şi fiecare dintre noi lucrătorii am primit cate trei bileţele cu nume ale celor din comunitatea lor. Vreau invitându-ne şi pe noi să ne rugăm pentru ei. Pentru că vrem să fim intenţionali în rugăciunile noastre, avem scrise numele persoanelor pentru care suntem îndemnaţi să ne rugăm. Puteţi participa la această lucrare, numind pe Tirzah (una din fetele din echipă) şi pe doi copii din Moldova, Marin şi Tania.

- Înţelepciune în administrarea resurselor pe care ni le dă Dumnezeu;

- Să fiu (fim) un semn al împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu în comunitate, Valea oraşului şi oraşul Galaţi.

Scrisoare de rugaciune

Începutul de an totdeauna este plin de planuri, promisiuni şi juruinţe. Personal, am facut şi eu acest lucru dorind să mă apropii mai mult de Dumnezeu şi fiind mai asemenea lui Isus.

Ca şi comunitate (Cuvântul Întrupat), unul din lucrurile pe care ni le-am propus a fost să ne dezvoltăm mai mult spiritual. Am început prin a studia mai multe articole, printre care şi „Ce înţelegem prin Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu” – de David Chronic. Acest articol a fost foarte provocator pe mine; am înţeles mai bine ce spune Biblia despre Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. Am fost provocat de întrebarea: „Cum sunt eu un semn al Împărăţiei Lui în comunitate şi în lume?”. Mă gândesc la Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu şi la modul în care este total opusă faţă de împărăţia lumii. Împărăţia Dumnezeului Triun oferă o relaţie de dragoste reciprocă, nu o putere ierarhică. Împărăţia Trinităţii oferă libertate, nu dominare. Împărăţia Tatălui, a Fiului şi a Duhului este unde dreptatea şi pacea se sărută (Psalmul 85:10) şi unde toate lucrurile sunt reînnoite (Apocalipsa 21:5). În împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, domnie înseamnă eliberare, şi nu dominare. Pe cruce, Isus confruntă, provoacă şi biruieşte toate puterile cu care se luptă. Pe cruce, Isus dezarmează şi demască puterile şi domniile (Coloseni 2:14-15) . Meditând la cuvântul Său, împărăţia Lui răspunde total diferit de cum ne aşteptăm noi.

„Cum pot eu să fiu un semn al Împărăţiei Lui?”. În comunitate printre copiii pe care îi slujesc pot să răspund, să vorbesc, să mă joc, să iubesc şi să reacţionez diferit faţă de cum se aşteaptă ei. Prin purtarea mea plină de dragoste faţă de ei, eu cred că Dumnezeu se atinge de inima lor şi produce o schimbare în viaţa lor. Această schimbare poate fi un semn al împrăţiei lui Dumnezeu în Valea oraşului, transformând familiile copiilor pe care îi slujim. Această transformare a comunităţii din Valea oraşului este un semn al împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu în oraşul Galaţi. Cred că aşa pot fi un semn al împărăţiei Lui.

Mulţumesc pentru spijinul în rugăciune şi că sunteţi alături de mine în lucrarea Lui. Dumnezeu răspunde la vremea potrivită de El.

Motive de rugăciune:

- Înţelepciune în administrarea resurselor pe care ni le dă Dumnezeu;

- Sănătate pentru copiii care frecventează Centrul Comunitar, mulţi copii au fost internaţi sau au fost bolnavi acasa cu răceli uşoare sau gripă;

- Să fiu (fim) un semn al împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu în comunitate, Valea oraşului şi oraşul Galaţi.

Prayer letter

The beginning of each year is always full of promises and commitment. Like many people out there, I started this year with the desire to become closer and closer to God and to be more and more like Jesus.
As a community we started this year with the promise to grow in our faith. We started by studying some good articles written by our theologian-in-the-house David Chronic. The one that I’ve liked the best is What we understand by The Kingdom of God.
The message of this article in particular has been a real challenge to me as it made me really sees what the Bible says about the Kingdom of God. How are we to be a sign of the Kingdom in our community and in the world? The Kingdom values are upside down as compared to the kingdom of men. Our God is a triune God marked by love and not by hierarchy based power, it is a God that offers freedom and not domination. The Kingdom of God is where steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. (Psalm 85:10) and where all things are made new (Rev. 21:5)
The reign in the Kingdom of God brings liberation and not domination. On the cross, Jesus confronted and prevailed all the powers that were against Him. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. (Colossians 2:14-15).
I now see the His Kingdom is not manifested the way I thought it should.
How then will I be a sign of His Kingdom?
I think the answer is found in the simple acts of love I can share with the people around me. If I respond, speak and love in unexpected ways I think I am fulfilling my call. If I share my love to the children I serve among God can touch their lives and bring the changes He wants to bring in me and in them. That change will be the sign of His Kingdom in The Valley (our neighborhood) and in the whole city of Galati.

Am intrat deja în luna decembrie, cu multe evenimente, sărbători şi cadouri. Mă uit în jur şi mi se pare că parcă şi noi, urmaşii lui Hristos, tindem să ne depărtăm încet încet de adevărata semnificaţie a acestor sărbători. Încercăm să pregătim o masă plină cu toate mâncărurile tradiţionale şi aşteptăm prietenii sau rudele. Apoi pregătim cateva cadouri pentru cei apropiaţi şi ne spunem „La mulţi ani”, „Crăciun fericit” sau „Merry Christmas” ca să fim mai moderni. Şi sărbătorim ziua de naştere a lui Isus fără să-L invităm.

Mă gândesc la Fiul lui Dumnezeu care s-a întrupat şi a venit pe pământ pentru noi. Tabloul naşterii Lui a fost destul de sumbru: fără personal medical, fără trusou, nu într-un salon încălzit, ci aşa cum citim în Luca 2:7, într-o iesle, „pentru că pentru El nu mai era loc în casa de poposire. El, Regele, venise pentru noi, dar noi nu am avut loc sau timp pentru El. Suntem ocupaţi cu evenimentele, mesele, cadourile şi uităm să-L sărbătorim, să ne oprim şi să deschidem uşa, să-L primim în mijlocul familiei noastre. Isus caută şi azi un loc unde să se nască, să doarmă, să mănânce, să facă baie, să fie iubit dar astăzi, El face acest lucru prin persoana „celor mai neînsemnaţi” dintre oameni (Matei 25:35-46).

În luna care a trecut am avut multe activităţi şi responsabilităţi. Programul meu este împărţit în două: o parte a timpului o dedic problemelor administrative, iar în cealaltă sunt educator. Atunci când se poate, încercăm să îi asistăm pe copii la lecţii în formula „unu la unu”. Băiatul de care mă ocup eu în acest fel este în clasa a IV-a. În timpul pe care îl petrec cu el, realizez câtă nevoie este de lucrarea lui Dumnezeu în viaţa lui, atât cât priveşte şcoala, situaţia lui familială, cât şi fiinţa lui.

Mulţumesc celor care s-au rugat pentru mine şi motivele de rugăciune aduse. Doar prin puterea Lui am reuşit să-mi îndeplinesc responsabilităţile.

- Consiliul Local Galaţi a aprobat dosarul pentru Subvenţia dată prin Legea 34;

- Copiii noi se integreză încet dar sigur şi avem bucuria să vedem cum Dumnezeu lucreză în viaţa lor;

- Totul este bine cu „Fetiţa Ispas” care îi va face părinţi pe Bela şi April.

Motive de rugăciune:

- Înţelepciune în continuare în administrarea resurselor pe care ni le dă Dumnezeu;

- Evenimentele care au loc la Centrul comunitar „La Vale” în perioada urmatoare: serbare cu copiii asistaţi aici şi cu colegii/clasele lor (vor fi prezenţi 70 de copii), serbare cu copiii şi familiile lor şi apoi noaptea de Crăciun pe care o petrecem împreună. Vrem ca Dumnezeu să fie prezent peste evenimente şi să se nască în inimile lor.

- R., băiatul cu care fac teme, a avut tot felul de probleme în drumul pe care îl face de la şcoală la centru şi apoi spre casă. Cum nu pot fi cu el în fiecare clipă, nu pot decât să îl încredinţez în mâna lui Dumnezeu pentru protecţie, şi să vă cer dumneavoastră să vă rugaţi pentru el.

December is almost over as are many of the events we planned, many holidays to celebrate, many gifts to offer to our dear ones. Everybody seems to be in a hurry these days and of course one starts wondering about what Christmas really means. As followers of Christ, we may also be tempted to slowly be distracted by the traditional meals we have to prepare, the right people we have to invite in our houses, the right outfits we have to buy for the big church celebration. Romanians even started to replace „Craciun fericit” with „Merry Christmas” (the former being the Romanian version of the latter) as it sounds more „modern” and sophisticated. Could it be that we too may celebrate Christmas without celebrating our Savior?

Like many others, I have been meditating on Jesus’ life here on earth. The picture of his birth was mostly painted in dark colors. Baby Jesus didn’t receive any medical assistance, nor did Mary, they didn’t receive any special baby clothes or lotions, they didn’t even have a warm room to rest in, we read in Luke 2:7. The King of kings had been born among us but there was no room at the inn. We didn’t have room for him; we didn’t have the time for him.

How busy am I today? How busy are we today? Besides the meals and gifts and house ornaments, do we dare to stop from all the things we need to do and open the door to welcome him into our house? Jesus is still looking for a place to be born today, to sleep in, to eat a hot meal, to take a shower, to change rugged clothes, to be loved and he is doing all these things in the person of “the least of the brothers”. Matthew 25:35-46.

I pray that we all are people who make the time and find the room the invite the “least of the brothers into our lives. “ God will give us the strength to do this if we are open.

The same strength from God has enabled me to fulfill my responsibilities so far. My time at the community center here in Galati is mainly shared between two areas: administrative and educational. In terms of education, I am in charge of helping R., a 10 year old boy with his homework. I have come to realize how desperately we need God’s intervention in the lives of the children who come here, as well as in our own lives. Like R., these children have experienced sadness, despair sometime, lack of basic things, and sometimes lack of love. This is the reason most of them don’t do very well in school.

Going back to some of the prayer requests I wrote about in my previous letter, I want to thank you for your prayers.

- the financial request from the mayor’s office has been approved;

- the new children have had a smooth adjustment to the activities at the center;

- “Beby Ispas” and parents Bela and April are all doing well.

Please pray that

- I will have wisdom in administrating the resources we receive;

- The events we have planned for this month will show God’s love to all the participants: the children who come to the center, their school mates and teachers, their families. We will also spend Christmas Eve at the center which will be both tiring and beautiful. We will share beautiful and affirming words about each other, receive gifts, eat good food and enjoy each other. We want God to be present with us as we celebrate together.

- Please pray for R., the boy I tutor, and for his protection on his way from school to the center. We can’t be with him all the time and it’s hard to hear about other boys bullying him.

Prima scrisoare de rugăciune din viaţa mea! Prima lună ca angajat full-time la Fundaţia Cuvântul Întrupat.

După cum aţi citit poate în scrisorile altora de aici, m-am alăturat acestei comunităţi de puţină vreme. A trecut deja o lună plină de activităţi, o lună în care a trebuit să asimilez multe cunostinţe şi să iau în primire multe responsabilităţi.

Ar fi potrivit să spun aici câteva lucrui despre mine: vin dintr-o familie de creştini evanghelic, fiind al doilea dintre cei opt copii. L-am cunoscut pe Dumnezeu în 2000, într-o tabără creştină, când am fost provocat să pierd totul pentru Isus, să renunţ la mândria mea, la ce vroiam eu să fac cu viaţa mea, ca să-L câştig pe Isus.

În anul 2004, am ajuns oarecum din greşeală la Cuvântul Întrupat, însoţind de fapt pe altcineva care vizita acest centru. Deşi la început nu mi-a plăcut nimic aici, am ajuns să mă îndrăgostesc de acest loc şi m-am implicat în diferite activităţi: ca voluntar în timpul liceului, iar mai târziu, împreună cu soţia mea în cadrul deprtamentului Advocacy (pentru care încă nu am găsit un cuvânt bun în limba rămână J). Unul din lucrurile care m-a atras în această comunitate a fost accentul pus pe oameni şi prin urmare pe relaţii - şi nu pe programe. Între oamenii de la Cuvântul Întrupat am înţeles inima lui Dumnezeu pentru cei săraci şi pasiunea Lui pentru lumea noastră zdrobită.

În 2010, i-am cunoscut pe Chris şi Phileena Heuertz, despre care auzisem foarte multe lucruri. Întâlnirea cu ei şi timpul petrecut împreună au fost pentru mine un moment important în care am realizat că o mare parte din cunoştinţa mea despre Dumnezeu, credinţă, slujire, Biblie era bazată mai mult pe descoperirile altora şi nu pe experienţele mele. S-a produs în mine o transformare. Cărţile lui Chris: Simple Spirituality şi Friendships at the margins m-au ajutat mult să înţeleg modul în care îi iubeşte Isus pe cei marginalizaţi. Am realizat încă o dată chemarea mea în lucrarea pe care o desfăşoară Cuvântul Întrupat.

Retragerea comunităţii din primăvară, 2010 m-a ajutat foarte mult în discernerea chemării mele.

În acest an, în umblarea mea cu Isus am vrut să las toate problemele mele în mâna Lui şi să am credinţa că El îmi va purta de grijă. Dar am încercat ca Uza (2 Samuel 6:5-7) să pun umărul la chivotul lui Dumnezeu, să încerc să fac tot eu lucrurile; bineînţeles că nu am reuşit şi am rămas şi în viaţă.

Am hotărât împreună cu soţia mea câţiva paşi pe care ar trebui să-i urmăm pentru a ne pune mai mult la dispoziţia lui Dumnezeu şi în mintea noastră, aceşti paşi erau ordonaţi ca prioritate. Erau 1, 2 şi 3. Din nou, ordinea Lui nu era nicidecum ordinea noastră. Când au început să se întâmple lucrurile, paşii au fost 3, apoi 2 şi apoi 1. Astăzi centrul „La Vale” este locul în care cred că trebuie să fiu iar responsabilităţile administrative şi financiare pe care mi le asum sunt cele prin care vreau să Îl pot sluji pe Dumnezeu aici.

Mă aflu în faţa unei etape noi în viaţa mea, în care voi avea mai multe responsabilităţi. Sunt încântat de ceea ce mi se întâmplă şi aştept să descopăr ceea ce are Dumnezeu pentru mine de acum înainte.

Motive de rugăciune:

- întelepciune în aministrarea resurselor pe care ni le dă Dumnezeu;

- aprobarea dosarului Subvenţiei în temeiul Legii 34 de către Consiliul Local Galaţi;

- copiii noi veniţi să fie atinşi de dragostea lui Dumnezeu prin noi;

- protecţie pentru bebeluşul Ispas - April şi Bela s-au mutat în aceasta toamnă în Statele Unite.

This is my first prayer letter ever. This is the first month I have served as a full time worker with Word Made Flesh Romania.

If you haven’t already read about me joining in from other people’s prayer letters, I am now letting you know that I have recently become a member of this amazing community. It’s been a busy and exciting month, full of activities, full of things to learn and full of responsibilities that I have had to assume.

This letter should include a few things about me so here they are: I come from a large Christian loving family. I am the second of eight siblings.

I came to know Christ in 2000, on a Christian camp, where I was challenged to lose everything, my pride and my plans so that I could have Jesus.

I first visited the WMF Community Center in Galati in 2004. A friend of mine was actually going to the center and I ended up there “by accident”. Even though I wasn’t impressed by this place at first, I came to love it as I got involved in many of the activities here. I served as a volunteer at for two years and later on, after I got married, both my wife and I became a part of the Advocacy team.

One of the things that I found amazing about this organization is how it views people and relationship as more important than programs.

It was through the people here that I discovered Jesus’ heart for the poor and His passion for our broken world.

In 2010, I met Chris and Phileena Heuertz in person, after having heard so many things about them. The time we spent together urged me to renew and refresh everything I knew of Jesus and of the work He calls us to be a part of. The two books Chris has written, Simple Spirituality and Friendships at the margins have helped me see how passionately Jesus loves the marginalized and the broken. God’s call upon my life has become very clear. And Word Made Flesh has been the setting for that.

My wife and I joined the WMF community on a much needed retreat in the mountains in the spring of 2010. The time we spent there was decisive in discerning my call. For the rest of this year I have been compelled to trust in the Lord for all my decisions and live out the faith that He would provide for all my needs. I did at times try to “help” God in the process like Uzzah did in the New Testament and unlike him, I am still alive.

In an attempt to make ourselves available for God, my wife and I thought a few things would have to happen. We even ordered the coming events according to the importance we assigned to each of them, and then we waited. When God started to move things in our lives, He reversed the order we thought we knew better. We felt like the firm ground was shaking beneath our feet but it turned out it was for the better.

Today I call the WMF Community Center the place where I am supposed to be in; the administrative and financial responsibilities that I have assumed are the way I want to serve the Lord here.

I am now beginning a new season in my life. I am excited about the things I will experience, learn from and hopefully will bring me closer to understanding more of who our God is!

I am leaving you with a few specific prayer requests:

- wisdom in managing the resources that God gives us;

- approval of our financial request to the mayor’s office;

- that the kids who have recently come to the center would see God’s love through us;

- the Ispas baby – Bela and April Ispas who moved back to the US are expecting a baby girl.
